Will of George Buller, Gentleman, Nether Stowey - The National Archives PROB 11/1331/22, probated 1 Oct 1799

George Buller the Testator is again likely a descendant of the Buller family at Lillesdon but no actual proof of that. He was buried 12 Jul 1799 at Nether Stowey. There is a marriage of George Buller of Stringston and Martha Govett of Stringston 15 Aug 1745 at Kilve. From the Genuki webpages for Stringston (http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/SOM/Stringston/index.html) the vicarage is annexed to Kilve thus explaining why the marriage was at Kilve. Kilve is 2 miles WNW of Stringston and Nether Stowey is 3 miles SSE of Stringston. However, the baptisms that fit with the children in the will are to a George and Mary so suspect that this George Buller was married to Mary Morrish 16 Oct 1759 at Nether Stowey. Just interesting to see the name Govett in the will and then the earlier marriage. The marriage between George Buller and Mary Morrish was by license. However they are not the parents of Christopher at least no Christopher Buller is baptized as a son of George and Mary. Mind you he could have been married to both Martha and Mary as the marriages are 14 years apart. But the children named in the will were all baptized to George and Mary Buller (Sarah's baptism is missing). The marriage by license is interesting and not unusual when a widower or widow is remarrying.

By the mid 1600s Lillesdon is held by Edward Courte so the Buller family has moved away from Lillesdon. I will pull up the Buller names on the Protestation Returns for Somerset shortly to have a look at the places in which they were found in 1641/42.

This is an excellent will especially as the probate actually names the husbands of these daughters.

Lillesdon is in the Parish of North Curry. Lillesdon is 12 miles NW of Nether Stowey, 15 miles NW of Kilton and 19 miles WNW of Nettlecombe.

On the Martin Southwood transcriptions for West Somerset parish records (more below) (http://www.wsom.org.uk/Registers/NStyMar17501836.htm) I found:

Marriage of Thomas Newton (Crowcombe) and Martha Ann Buller 16 May 1798 at Nether Stowey.
Baptism of Jane daughter of Sarah Buller 9 Mar 1792.

The marriages for  William Alford and Mary Buller and  Robert Parker and Elizabeth Buller were at Kilton (as were those of their brothers George and John).

There are a number of Buller entries in the Parish Registers of Nether Stowey but an interesting item in British History on line in the Stringston area follows (http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.aspx?compid=18499)

An estate described in the 16th century as HOLWELL manor and perhaps before 1539 owned by Buckland priory came into the possession of Thomas Hill (d. 1565), and he sold part of it to Edward Jenkins (d. c. 1572). (fn. 47) Andrew Jenkins (d. 1593) held other land of George Hill, Thomas's son. (fn. 48) By the 17th century three separate holdings at Holwell may have derived from Hill's estate. One, later known as Nether, Lower, or Middle Holwell, was assigned in 1602 by John Malet and his wife Mary to John Colford, in succession to John Jenkins. (fn. 49) The Colfords, who are said to have held the land in chief by knight service, remained in possession until the later 17th century, but by 1710 had sold to George Buller. (fn. 50) George's great-nephew, also George Buller, sold it in 1789 to John Barrell, and John's son, also John, in 1857 conveyed it to the Revd. Henry Codrington. Henry conveyed it to trustees. (fn. 51).

I have decided to extract all the Buller entries from the online site for the West Somerset Parish Registers just to have a look at them and have them in one place for future reference as I am prone to thinking that Christopher Buller is descendant of this line especially having eliminated the Cornwall/Devon Buller families for the most part.
