Will of Abraham Blake, Private Marine, HM Ship Vigilant - The National Archives PROB 11/1095, probated 18 Sep 1782

There is a baptism for an Abraham Blake 5 Dec 1756 in Kensington, Middlesex, England son of Richard and Isabel Blake. Richard was a labourer working in the gravel pits.

Abraham Blake, testator, was a private Marine and it isn’t possible to guess his age but this baptism would have him 25 years of age at the time of writing the will. There is another baptism in London in 1744 which would make him 37 years of age. Abraham Blake baptized 18 Sep 1744 in London, England son of John and Mary Blake.

Will of John Kingdon, Bachelor, North Molton, Devon - The National Archives PROB 11/153/179, probated 11 Feb 1628

The testator, John Kingdon, of Northmolton, Devon, is listed as a bachelor. He mentions his brothers Henry and Philip. His nephew John Kingdom son of Philip Kingdon is mentioned as well as his Goddaughter Joane Radley. His mother was named Beaton Kingdon.

The reason for collecting this will is lost to time. Certainly North Molton always interests me as my Pincombe and other families lived in North Molton. I am also related to the Braye family. One of my Vicary cousins married into the Kingdon family in North Molton. However, as mentioned, the reason for collecting this will is totally lost to time but might be helpful to another.

Comparison of Family Finder Results with four siblings

Finally I was able to upload a second brother to Find My Past and open his results there including My Origins. It was somewhat of a surprise as I have tested him at 23 and Me, Ancestry and now this upload to FT DNA. The surprise was 94% British Isles. All of our ancestors are from England going back many many generations. I need to be back into at least the 1700s where I may have a German ancestor (not yet proven) and then back into the 1500s with known Huguenot ancestors. So 94% is not a surprise but most people living in the British Isles do not test at 94%.

Comparison of Siblings:

Sibling 1

94% British Isles
2% Scandinavia
4% Eastern Middle East

Sibling 2

84% British Isles
9% Southern Europe
8% Scandinavia

Sibling 3

60% British Isles
19% Scandinavia
15% Southern Europe
5% Western and Central Europe

Myself

51% British Isles
33% Scandinavia
12% Western and Central Europe
3% Asia Minor
1% North Africa

Looking at this with respect to where my five waves of ancestors who came to Canada actually lived  in the British Isles is also interesting.

My first wave of ancestors (Thomas Routledge his wife Elizabeth (Routledge) Routledge) and their family which included their daughter Mary (Routledge) Gray) emigrated to Canada from Bewcastle, Cumberland in the summer of 1818. This family is found in the Bewcastle area back into the 1600s (and likely earlier). The mother of Thomas Routledge was from Lanercost which is slightly south of Bewcastle but still in Cumberland.

My second wave of ancestors (Robert Gray (Junior) came on his own actually) emigrated to Canada from Etton, East Riding of Yorkshire in 1832 as far as I can determine from his land records. This family is found in this area including, Etton, Cherry Burton, Kilnwick, Watton, Holme on the Wolds, Lund, Great Driffield, and Hutton Cranswick. This area all being around Beverley, East Riding of Yorkshire slightly to the north and north west.

My third wave of ancestors (John Pincombe, his wife Elizabeth (Rew) Pincombe and their family which included their son William Robert Pincombe) emigrated to Canada from Molland, Devon in the fall of 1850 arriving in the Port of New York 7 Jan 1851 and in Canada in the spring of 1851. This Pincombe family is found in Bishops Nympton going back to the late 1500s, Rose Ash, Merton, North Molton, Landkey and South Molton. The Rew family is found in Selworthy, Somerset back into the 1500s as well as Wootton Courtney, Minehead, Dulverton, Cutcombe, Porlock, Dunster, and Luxborough. These villages all being in west Somerset running west from Minehead towards the Exmoors.

My fourth wave of ancestors (again a singleton, Ellen Rosina (Buller) Pincombe) emigrated to Canada in 1908 from Birmingham, England but her father's family was from both Bermondsey, Surrey and Staffordshire/Leicestershire. This includes Newington Surrey and Rugeley and Lichfield in  Staffordshire and Ashby de la Zouch and Loughborough in Leicestershire. These villages/cities all being in an area roughly north and north east of Birmingham and south of London. Her mother's family is somewhat of a mystery although she was born in Birmingham according to her death certificate. However the Irish ancestry is a mystery and family lore does point that way for her ancestry.

My fifth wave of ancestors (Samuel George Blake, his wife Edith Bessie (Taylor) Blake and their son Ernest Edward George Blake) came to Canada in 1913. The Blake family itself is from the Andover area of Hampshire including Upper Clatford, Penton Mewsey, and Knights Enham. My grandfather's mother was from Turnworth, Dorset and her families were found in this area including Winterborne Clenstone, Winterborne Stickland, Winterborne Whitchurch, Spetisbury, and Milton Abbas. Edith Bessie Taylor aka Ada Bessie Cotterill Rawlings families are from Kimpton, Hampshire and before that Enford, Milston, West Harnahan, Fugglestone St Peter, Odstock, Melksham, Fovant and South Newton in Wiltshire. These villages all being in the rural area running west and slightly south from Andover, Hampshire.

The Scandinavian is interesting and does point out a strong difference in inheritance between all of us. I am going to do the Living DNA on my brother and I and perhaps it will be possible to upload the other two sets of data to this site in the future to give me a well rounded look at the entire family.

Ancestry DNA has produced an interesting chart in Science Tech

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-3711040/How-British-Genetic-study-reveals-Yorkshire-Anglo-Saxon-UK-East-Midlands-Scandinavian.html

where they predict that the East Midlands has the most Scandinavian ancestry at 10.37%. The East Midlands according to their map includes: Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire (not North and North east), Northamptonshire, Nottinghamshire and Rutland.

I do have three of us tested at Ancestry:

Sibling 1

76% Western Europe
17% Ireland
5% Scandinavia
1% Iberian Peninsula
1% Great Britain

Sibling 2

27% Great Britain

5% Iberian Peninsula
1% Italy/Greece

Myself

64% Great Britain
14% Ireland
Western Europe 11%
6% Scandinavia

1% Eastern Europe

I also have results from 23 and Me

Sibling 1

47.3% British and Irish
20.9% French and German
1.0% Scandinavian
28.0% Northwestern European
0.2% Ashkenazi Jewish

Sibling 2

Sibling 3

1% Southern European

Myself

 54.2% British and Irish
14.4% French and German
2.0% Scandinavian

The results are all somewhat similar but do not really concentrate on the British Isles which I hope to acquire when I test my brother and myself at Living DNA shortly.

Will of Thomas King, Yeoman, Upton Gray, Hampshire - The National Archives, PROB 11/368, probated 2 Dec 1681

Likely a member of the same King family at Upton Gray and Thomas names his sons Thomas and John and his daughters Mary, Elizabeth and Martha. All are under twenty one years of age. His wife is named as Mary.

A Thomas King was baptized 21 Oct 1633 at Upton Grey son of Thomas and Elisabeth King.

Elizabeth King daughter of Thomas and Marie Kinge was baptized 9 Apr 1672 at Upton Grey.
Martha Kinge daughter of Thomas and Mary Kinge was baptized 2 Nov 1674 at Upton Grey.
John Kinge son of Thomas and Marie Kinge was baptized 16 Apr 1677 at Upton Grey

A little later on but an interesting baptism of Thomas King son of Thomas and Ann King baptized 9 May 1695 at Upton Grey.

The will of Anne King probated in 1729 mentions that her husband’s name was Thomas King.

http://kippeeb.blogspot.ca/2017/03/will-of-anne-king-widow-upton-gray.html

Always nice to be able to link these wills. Once again, this is not likely  my family as no mention of my Thomas at Upper Clatford in the will of Anne King.

Will of Robert King, Yeoman, Upton Gray, Hampshire - The National Archives PROB 11/223, probated 20 Oct 1652

Another will by a member of the King family at Upton Grey and Robert is the son of Anne King, widow who left her will which was transcribed earlier:

http://kippeeb.blogspot.ca/2017/02/will-of-anne-king-widow-upton-gray.html

Robert King, testator, names his wife Johane and does not list any children. He mentions a William King and his two children who now live with him but does not state the relationship. He does not leave his property to them. He mentions his first cousin Bernard Hunt (his aunt (sister to his mother)’s son). He has many godchildren; he names a number of them with particular legacies. None appear to be related to him.

Will of John King, Natley Scures, Hampshire - The National Archives PROB 11/421, probated 17 Oct 1694

The testator, John King, does not mention a wife or children. He does name his brothers as John King and Richard King and brother’s in law William Hall and William Dyer. He names his friends William King of Bramshill (12 miles from Upton Gray) and John Nash of Mattingly (8 miles from Upton Gray).

John King lives at Nately Scures as it is presently known. Nately Scures is five miles from Upton Gray and this road passes through Mapledurwell so continues in the same general area as the King wills already transcribed.

This area is somewhat distant from Upper Clatford (26 miles) and I am not sure now why I decided to transcribe these wills. However, once done I will not repeat them! My Thomas King died in 1762 and his children were in their 30s at that time. He married in 1728 so perhaps born between 1695 and 1705. He was a farmer according to his will. I have not learned very much about him in that instance. His farm was next to that of Thomas Collins and his daughter (Joanna (King) Blake would marry the widower Thomas Collins after she herself was widowed for fourteen years (Joseph Blake died in 1767). There is more information on the farm of Thomas Collins which may have included the farm of Thomas King.

Will of Edmund King, Alton, Hampshire - The National Archives, PROB 11/258, probated 31 Oct 1656

Edmund King, the testator, was married to Agnes (unknown).

There was a baptism for William King, Nov 1631, at Alton, Hampshire. (Family Search)

Although the Alton Parish Records do date back to 1615 for baptisms, 1629 for marriages and 1616 for burials, they do not appear to be online. Find my Past has only nine entries between 1590 and 1670.

Edmond King (age 32) married Joane Bushell (age 40) 22 Oct 1655 at Binsted near Alton, Hampshire

Edmund King buried 28 Jul 1656 at Alton, Hampshire (likely the testator)

Edward King buried 15 May 1668 at Alton, Hampshire

Jane King (age 22) married Allen Bryant (age 28) 26 Feb 1654 at Binsted near Alton, Hampshire

Joan King buried 22 Sep 1655 at Alton, Hampshire

Johan King buried 28 Jan 1637 at Alton, Hampshire

John King buried 9 Jan 1656 at Alton, Hampshire

(Male) King (infant) buried 26 Aug 1665 at Alton, Hampshire

William King buried 24 Sep 1668 at Alton, Hampshire

As far as I can tell just the burial for Edmund King relates to this particular will.

Was this family always at Alton? There are King families in Alton back into the 1500s.

A search on Find My Past did not reveal any King families similar to this in Hampshire other than in the Alton area.

Edmund named his daughters. First, Jane Rout with sons Thomas and John and daughter Dorothy, her husband is likely David Rout who signed the will as a witness. Second
Elizabeth Vanner with son John and husband is John Vanner identified as a son in law. Third, Margery Nash with sons George and John and daughter Rachell. George Nash is identified as a son in law. Fourth, Agnes Manning and her son John Manning and daughter Elizabeth Manning.  He also named his sons, Edmund King the eldest with daughter Anne. Thomas and William are his other sons named in the will and his joint executors.

He identified his brother as Henry King.
