Reworking Blake yDNA website

Back to reworking the Blake yDNA website. I would like to complete this project before the next Blake Newsletter due 1st of October.

Looking at R-M269 grouping and that includes a number of the sub-groups on the present website. Unfortunately only a few have taken their results beyond this initial subclade of R1b. Thinking through this difficult, some of the sub-groups were set up by an earlier research who placed individuals into particular groups based on email correspondence with them. I do not like to particularly do away with these initial groups unless I can replace them with something more meaningful in terms of SNPs designations to deeper subclades.

Likely I will retain some of this nomenclature but where I have deeper subclades to work with I will group individuals into these deeper subclades. In the next newsletter I will ask that people in those deeper subclades write to me with details on their Blake family line to see if I am able to improve on the divisions by relevant family information.

The goal in all of this is to provide information on the yDNA portion of the Blake study carrying the Blake surname.

Looking at the original Group labeled D English Ancestry (3) - includes Blakes who descend from William Blake and Agnes Band (nee Thorne). There are four members in this group and none of them have done any deep clade testing. This original grouping was done by an earlier Blake researcher. The reference to William Blake and Agnes Band (nee Thorne) will be discussed after looking at the yDNA allele result for these four individuals. On the first 12 markers, these four individuals are a perfect match. On the next nine markers three members continue to be a perfect match. DYS464abcd(ef) is a set of fast moving (i.e. prone to mutation) markers and at this point the three members of the group have for one individual just one difference yielding 2 members as 25/25 and one member as 24/25. Moving on to 37 markers we have 2 members are matching 37/37 and one member has one difference (the same member as had the earlier difference) yielding 35/37. Generally having the same surname and matching this closely indicates a shared ancestor but the number of generations back can not be determined exactly. Two members of the group have tested to 67 markers and just one mismatch and again the earlier member with the mismatches has this third mismatch yielding 64/67 as the shared matches between these two members. Still well within an acceptable degree of difference to be sharing common ancestry but again no ideas on far back this shared ancestor lived. having determined that this group has shared ancestry, I will move on to look at the history attached to this family line. None of the members of this group have completed Family Finder. One member of the group has stated his furtherest back Blake ancestor was Humphrey Blake who died 1515 at Plainfield, Somerset.

The William Blake referred to above was married to Agnis Band (widow and formerly Thorne). This William Blake first was allotted land in Dorchester, Massachusetts on the 14th of May 1636. A visit to the New England Historic Genealogical Society library in Boston in 2005 yielded a number of Blake genealogies for me to examine (and photograph) at that time. Francis E Blake in 1898 compiled a history: Increase Blake of Boston, His Ancestors and Descendants, with a Full Account of William Blake of Dorchester and his Five Children. In his book he corrected the work of H. G. Somerby which is now regarded as quite fraudulent.

On Page 13 of his book he has a copy of the Agreement to the articles of association at Agawam now Springfield. He states that the signature of this William Blake bears good resemblance to his known signature at later times.

The family of William and Agnis (Band, Thorne) Blake as known in the Colony included: John, Anne, William, James and Edward. There are a number of Blake genealogies that provide information on the descendants of these five children. If an individual matches these four individuals perfectly at 12 markers, 0 to 2 markers off at 37 markers, 0 to 4 markers off at 67 markers (and the more markers the better that is for sure)  and has a paper trail back to William and Agnis Blake, I would appreciate hearing from you. Actually identifying the immigrant William Blake with a set of markers would be a real step forward. The more complicated (although I must admit doing American genealogy is a real challenge having watched my husband pursue his ancestors for nearly 50 years and we have spent many many hours in the many record offices/research facilities in the New England States and New York) aspect of this research is taking this line back to England. I think quite rightly this is an English family; they are in an English Colony and accepted as English so having made that one premise I will move back in my thinking to Somerset which is said by these descendants of this couple to be the original homeland of this couple.

I have a number of Blake genealogies but Francis Blake has done an interesting work on this family (his own actually). He writes about Increase Blake  who was the son of Increase Blake, grandson of James Blake, great grandson of James Blake and great great grandson of William (the immigrant) Blake.

As noted above one of the testers in this D - English Ancestry (3) group has given his furtherest back ancestor as Humphrey Blake. Francis Blake in his book was in correspondence with a descendant of one of the brothers of William the immigrant Blake, namely Edward J Blake  and he lived at Crewkerne, Somerset as identified by Francis Blake.  Edward Jarman Blake was born Sep quarter 1853 in Taunton RD (Free BMD, accessed 26 Sep 2018). Included in Taunton is Bishops Hull where Edward Jarman Blake is found on the 1861 census (Find My Past) with his parents William Blake, Fanny F O Blake (actual Fanny Follett Osler (Browne) Blake) and his five siblings. His father was a Justice of Chelsea and a landed proprietor born in 1816 at Crewkerne, Somerset. On the 1901 census, Edward Jarman Blake is located at Crewkerne on the census. He is a solicitor and his children were born at Crewkerne commencing in 1894. This fits in very well with the publication date of the book in 1898.

William, father of Edward Jarman Blake, was born 19 Nov 1815 and baptized 4 Nov 1816 at Crewkerne in the Presbyterian Church. His father William was a minister in that Church and his mother was named Elizabeth.  William Blake and Elizabeth Jarman married in Bath 21 Oct 1812. There is a Pedigree Chart held by the Blake Museum at Bridgwater which does trace this line back (chart 5):

Where we can see that William Blake of Crewkerne who married Elizabeth Jarman was baptized 31 Mar 1773. Using another portion of the chart his parents are named as (Reverend) William Blake and Hannah (Downing) Blake and they married 1 Sep 1768 at Bishops Hull, Somerset.

William Blake (married to Hannah Downing) was baptized 29 Apr 1730 son of William Blake and Jane A'Court who married 21 Oct 1712 at Yeovil, Somerset. William was their youngest child according to the Charts published by the Blake Museum and this does fit with the records.

The two last charts do fit together. Rev Malachi Blake in the lower right corner of the last chart can be seen in the second last chart top line and 2nd individual to the right from the left hand edge.

William Blake lived at Taunton at least towards the end of his life as he was buried there 31 Jan 1772. He was the son of the Reverend Malachi Blake and Mary (Mico) Blake.

In the middle of the above image William Blake of Taunton married Jane A'Court and the parents of William in the line above and to the left the Rev Malachi Blake married to Mary Mico. Find my Past has the baptism of Malachi Blake 24 Jun 1651 at Pitminster, Somerset son of John Blake although it is only a transcription of a record. The Rev Malachi Blake is said to be living at Wellington which is within the Taunton Registration district (as is Pitminster).

The Chart at the Blake Museum lists the parents of Malachi Blake as John Blake and Mary Wilkins who married 20 Jun 1648 at Pitminster. The website of Roy Parkhouse with his transcriptions of the Pitminster Parish Registers (http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/SOM/Pitminster/PitBap_Be) lists the following children baptized by John Blake as Malachi baptized 24 Jun 1651, Elizabeth baptized 12 Mar 1652, William baptized 13 Feb 1654, Samuell baptized 16 Dec 1656, and John baptized 16 May 1659 (also an unknown daughter baptized 3 Dec 1661). These records do fit in with the chart above.

Comparing this new chart with the one above William Blake of Taunton married to Jane A'Court is in the middle of the chart on the left. The line above has William Blake of Pitminster which can be seen on the chart above and is just above William Blake and Jane A'Court. Looking to the right the grandfather of William Blake married to Jane A'Court is listed as John Blake of Pitminster and his wife Mary Wilkins.

The father of this John Blake is named as John Blake of Pitminster married to Elizabeth. His probate was administered 1 May 1647 but no record could be located for this particular administration. John was baptized 19 Jun 1597 but these records are not available to the author. This particular individual is important to the story as the chart shows that it was his brother William Blake of Pitminster baptized 10 Jul 1594 was the William Blake who went to Dorchester in the Massachusetts Bay Colony with his wife Agnes (Bond, Thorne) Blake and their children.

The parents of John and William are named as William Blake of Pitminster and Anne (unknown). This William is listed as buried in 1642.

The individual who created this large chart held by the Blake Museum is unknown. It is in the same handwriting so was created after the last entry in the 1920s.

Horatio Gates Somerby did create a set of information which has now been declared fraudulent where he referred to the progenitor of the Blake family of Wiltshire as a Robert Blake (having dropped the de from his name i.e. Robert de Blake). He named his son as Robert and then Henry son of that Robert married to Elizabeth daughter of Edward Durant. One can thus assume that the author did not actually use his work.

Looking at the timeline we have Robert Blake married to Avice (Malwyn, Wallop?) and that she died 29 Oct: 13 Edward IV (regnal year translates to 1473), with an Inquisition Post Mortem 29 Oct: 14 Edward IV. The regnal year 29 Oct 14 translates to 1474.  The National Archives UK has this particular document dated as between 4 March 1474 and the 3rd of March 1475 (C 140/48/6) listed under Blake, Amice Wilts and I did send in a correction to Blake, Avice [Wilts]. Working backwards and a transcription of this document states that her son John was 40 years of age making Avice around 60 in 1473 giving her a year of birth approximately 1413. Her husband Robert would have been born around this time and he is stated to be the son of Henry Blake and even if we attribute just 20 years to each generation this would take us back to 1393. Henry's father is said to be William and twenty years back would mean a year of birth of 1373. This William a son of Henry and twenty more years back to 1353. This Henry the son of Richard Blaque and hence born circa 1333. This Richard the son of Robert and hence born in 1313 at the earliest. The record of Robert being a juror in 1336 is hence possible.

There isn't any information on the creator of this particular document. No information on the source of all the material or whether an earlier document was copied. As can be seen in the trace back above many of the records are backed up by other researchers' transcriptions through the years. On the early part of the chart shown above I have absolutely no ideas on whether it is fully correct. I have not yet found the record from 1336 for Robert Blake. The National Archives UK holds a number of juror lists. But I did find one interesting records of a Grant (at Echelhampton) by Robert le Blake to John Malewayn of all his lands and tenements in Echelhamptone which he by feoffment of his brother Adam Blake and which were lately Robert de Echelhamptone's. This record is held by the Wiltshire and Swindon History Centre and was dated 1358 with reference 1720/154. At the archives search for the Wiltshire and Swindon History Centre I located a few documents for Robert le Blake:

An interesting set of documents in that a Robert Blake would marry Avice Malewyn (widow) in the early 1400s. One is left to wonder who the John Blake is in the 1395 document. Robert appears to be alive at least until 1363 if it is the same Robert throughout the 1300s.

In 1351 Robert le Blake acquires land at Quemberford which is an interesting find.

Searching on Robert Blake instead of Robert le Blake yields 84 results of which 7 are in the 1300s and 1400s and not yet added.

Witnessed: John Blake, John Stodlegh, John atte Hall, Robert Felawe, William Wychampton. Date: 1390

Having all these documents at hand might prove interesting looking at the Blake family in this time period in Wiltshire.

A few thoughts I am left with: Who is John Blake  of Quemerford in 1386? That Robert le Blake was never referred to as Robert de Blake always Robert Blake or Robert le Blake. One is left to wonder if he is a descendant of Richard le Blake who asked to set up a market in 1274 as a merchant from Rouen, France. All the references to Calne are rather interesting. Could it be that a researcher in the past like Horatio Gates Somerby read through these documents and not being able to read the early Latin and understand it or perhaps having difficulty with reading the actual text simply picked up on the surname Blake and the various places and assumed that they referred in some way to Robert Blake as a property in which he was involved?

Comparing this chart to the published works of the notes of Horatio Gates Somerby (produced by W.H.W. at Boston, December, 1881 private printing). This printing was considered by Mr Stanton Blake and his brothers and they have consented to have this book printed for the use of the family.

Stanton Blake was the eldest son of George Baty Blake (his two older brothers died as infants) and he was born 8 May 1837. He had four brothers. George Baty Blake married Ann Hull Blake (daughter of Joshua Blake) 6 May 1833.

George Baty Blake was the son of John Welland Blake and Abigail Jones. John Welland Blake was the son of Joseph Blake of Boston and Hingham and he married Deborah Smith. Joseph was the eldest son of Joseph Blake of Boston and Mary Welland (married 18 May 1738). Joseph was the son of Solomon Blake of Boston and he had married Abigail Arnold 24 August 1704. Solomon was the son of Edward Blake of Milton and he married Patience Pope. Edward Blake was the son of William Blake (the immigrant) and his wife Agnes (Band, Thorne).

This is the first time that I have looked at the book often referred to as Horatio Gates Somerby's  genealogical research. I have not done the research on this line but would say that his details on the family of William Blake (the immigrant) would appear to be as it was known in the 1800s and I have not actually seen anything to indicate that he was in error in this part of his notes.

This has been an interesting look at the information that is available in the Record Offices of Wiltshire/Somerset on the Blake family that can be reviewed online. Although I continue to say that Horatio Gates Somerby was incorrect some of the fault can be attributed to incorrect copying from this original book. Nonetheless he is incorrect to name my ancient ancestor Nicholas Blake of Enham as a grandson of Robert Blake of Calne, there isn't anything to prove that nor was Nicholas' mother named Mary. Clearly in the will of Jone Blake dated 23 Mar 1527 she names her children Nycholas, Robt and Elsabeth [Blake) Mylne. She indicates that she is living at Enham.

Ethnicity as a subject of discussion

There is a free public workshop sponsored by Archives of Ontario which I am watching at the moment - just on lunch break. The name of the workshop: Genealogy and Genetics.

I must admit my initial concern when we tested in 2006 was what would these results be used to look at. It was about six months before we actually did the National Genographic Test and submitted it. I have nothing to hide but taking the test implies on my part that I think this is a good idea to do DNA testing. As it has turned out the advent of DNA testing did a great deal towards teaching us that we are all a subset of African diversity; our footprint in Africa still shows up 60,000 years after our ancestors are said to have left Africa.

The database that is used by National Genographic has samples from indigenous groups from many many parts of the world. They particularly took DNA samples from groups of people who were static; i.e. had been in their location for thousands of years by their known history. It was such testing that let National Genographic create the haplogroup charts for yDNA and mtDNA showing the changes from the oldest samples to the modern samples found around the world although primarily in 2006 the purchased samples were from North America and Europe (including the British Isles). It was a gift to be able to see one's trek out of Africa and now, twelve years later, that trek is for the most part unchanged from the original map which we received with our results.

The introduction of autosomal testing though has brought to the forefront a dilemma with regard to who we are by our ethnicity. Having testing at all of the testing companies I can say quite assuredly that none of them are the same. They all use different comparison databases. Our personal ethnicity doesn't change but the way that they are calculated based on different reference points results in a variable ethnicity between companies. The reference points can and will become more or less precise. That is the amazing part of genetics and DNA studies. As you accumulate a greater number of samples than the chances of introducing another ethnicity from these new sample takers increases rather than decreases the number of ethnic origins because we are a migrant people. We keep moving; perhaps not in each generation but over time our people have moved.

When I started to work on genealogy, I had no idea on the birth places of my ancestors past grandparents except in the case of my Blake direct line and my Pincombe direct line. The other two lines were mired in stories partly to conceal and partly speculation generated by discussion of my parents with their parents in their childhood. It wasn't that that sent me to genealogy; rather it was my cousin who needed me to write a bio for the Westminster and Delaware History Books (published in 2005). He tried to get my sister to write it and she redirected him to me because Ed (my husband) does genealogy. As resistant as I was to becoming involved in genealogy a trip to Europe had stirred just a little of that interest. The suggestion that my grandfather had owned a grocery store on Wharncliffe Road (it was my uncle, his son) was enough to spur me onward to write the bio. I took 43 courses at the National Institute for Genealogical Studies (best couple of thousand I have spent in a while!) and while taking the courses I did the needed research and produced the bio in time for publication (with the help of my siblings and Pincombe cousins that my cousin brought together for a research day). The information still stands as being correct even after 13 years of publication which I think might be amazing given the possibility of making a mistake in moving backwards in time.

Once into genealogy though I could not leave it alone. It has occupied my waking hours now for fifteen years and the fascination increases rather than diminishing. Have I solved all the problems? Absolutely not; nor will I in my lifetime. DNA has pointed out more possibilities than family lore ever did. The Ethnicity results have given credence to that family lore.

The misuse of ethnicity though is always in my thoughts. Living next door to the United States I am very conscious of what can happen in a society when one group decides it is better than another based on colour. It is a scary thought actually; one we must avoid at all costs. We are all equal under the sun.

All of our known ancestry is English (i.e. from six distinct areas in England itself):

Devon/Somerset
Hampshire/Wiltshire/Dorset
London/Surrey
Warwickshire/Staffordshire/Leicestershire
East Riding of Yorkshire
Cumberland

Five waves of migration brought these six distinct areas to Canada between 1818 and 1913.

The first wave coming from Bewcastle, Cumberland in 1818 with my 3x great grandparents Thomas and Elizabeth (Routledge) Routledge and their family including their daughter Elizabeth Mary Ann Routledge who was fourteen years old at the time.

The second wave come from Etton, in the East Riding of Yorkshire with my 2x great grandfather Robert Gray junior arriving circa 1832-34 and he married Elizabeth Mary Ann Routledge in 1835. One of their daughters was Grace Gray born in 1839.

The third wave came from Bishops Nympton/Molland, Devon in 1851 with my 2x great grandparents John and Elizabeth (Rew) Pincombe. Elizabeth though was born at Selworthy Somerset. One of their children William Robert Pincombe was thirteen years old at the time. In 1865 William Robert Pincombe married Grace Gray. Their surviving child was John Routledge Pincombe.

The fourth wave came from Birmingham, Warwickshire in 1908 with my maternal grandmother Ellen Rosina Buller. Unknown to her was the London/Surrey ancestry of her Grandfather Buller's line. Ellen married John Routledge Pincombe in 1913. One of their children was Helen Louise Pincombe.

The fifth wave came in two parts from Eastleigh, Hampshire with my grandfather Samuel George Blake coming first in 1913 followed eight months later by his wife Ada Bessie Cotterill (Rawlings Taylor) Blake and their son Ernest Edward George Blake. Ernest married Helen Louise Pincombe.

Ancestry was the first company that we tested at to note our Irish/Scot ancestry and the percentages were substantial in their first recording and continue in this second realignment with 10%, 10%, 12%, and 17% recorded. Known to us already because of our testing of the mtDNA was the likely resting spot for our ancient ancestress in the mitochondrial line prior to modern migration and that area was Argyllshire/Ayrshire, Scotland. This area is known to have ancient migration across to Northern Ireland. But also during the Cromwellian era (the 1640s in particular) a number of Scots were moved to Ireland and referred to as Planters. This was a great step forward in my thinking with regard to my maternal grandmother's mother who is known to us as Ellen Taylor and information from 1879 when she was about 20 years of age until her death at 37 years of age in 1897 is available. It is her actual birth date/birth parents that are unknown although purchasing every Ellen Taylor's birth registration at Birmingham/Aston has given credence to a possible set of parents not yet proven. But it is our present day Irish matches that may yet assist us in that regard. The expected percentage from a great grandparent in our autosomal DNA is estimated to be 12.5% and the variance tends to be between 0% to 25% (i.e. you may not share any from a great grandparent or you could have inherited totally from one great grandparent by inheriting solely from one of two grandparents perhaps but that would likely be pretty rare). What colours this percentage of Irish/Scot somewhat, and it shows up in Living DNA results, is the Routledge family. These 3x great grandparents (second cousins) are originally Scot Highlanders prior to the 1500s and given that they tended to marry cousins the DNA has not been diluted by other family lines through the centuries up to the early 1800s. How much does a 3x great grandparent contribute and that is around 3% so 6% in total since both are Routledge and from the same actual line. If I look at the matches then sibling 4 does match quite strongly with the Routledge family (stronger than the other three) and you can see that in the 17% - Amazing really what DNA can find!

Scurrying away once again to contemplate these latest changes and how they might affect my thinking with regard to that elusive great grandmother. I do have cousins in the United States that share my maternal grandmother's ancestry (two of her sisters) (six 2nd cousins (grandchildren of these two sisters)) and perhaps one of these days they will test and we can triangulate on some of these known Irish matches!

Blake family

I wrote to the owner of one of the Blake trees on My heritage mostly because it shows descent from my 3x great grandparents Thomas Blake and Sarah (Coleman) Blake. I have a pretty extensive tree coming down from the parents of Thomas Blake (Joseph Blake and Joanna (King) Blake) which pretty much includes everyone known to me from discussions by my Grandfather Blake who lived with us when I was a child. However, I was only eight when he died so have always been open to other thoughts. A researcher in England put together a similar tree for a descendant who lives in Australia and he shared that with me about fifteen years ago now.

For the most part this family (looking at the fiche for the area parishes) lived at Upper Clatford from the marriage of Joseph Blake (from Andover) and Joanna King in 1757. This family continues to live at Upper Clatford (a few descendants). They also did live in neighbouring villages like Abbotts Ann, Monxton, Longparish, Little Ann, etc etc but mostly in that area around Andover.

This new tree has its main roots in Havant which is far to the south of Hampshire. I have worked on the Havant Blake family when I did the wills for Hampshire. I have no real ideas on their location before they are located there. It is unlikely that this line is descendant of Thomas Blake and Sarah (Coleman) Blake simply because all of their children and their descendants are accounted for in the research done by an earlier researcher in England (name escapes me at the moment but do have that in an email from the early 2000s) and myself.

The question really is how to proceed. Neither I nor any of my siblings match the ten descendants of the Blake Havant family who would be third cousins or third cousins once or twice or three times removed (I have long generations in my family due to my ancestor being a younger child (born in 1845) with much older siblings (born in the late 1820s and 1830s). This researcher has mentioned that they are not sure of that connection. Should I proceed and say that this connection is unlikely? or just leave them to realize that it is very unlikely? Always a quandry.

I actually have a similar problem much further back in my Blake tree. The parents of Joseph were Thomas Blake and Ann (Carter) Blake and he was the son of Thomas Blake and Mary (Spring) Blake. Thomas was their only child as far as I can tell and I do have the fiche for the areas around Andover. A Charles Blake was baptized at Abbotts Ann possibly in the exact same time period (I can not find that in the Abbotts Ann fiche and do suspect he was baptized elsewhere and the son of a different Blake line). I have given all that information to one of the individuals who kept attaching to my Family Search tree but this likely error is widely circulated and I encountered it again in the One World Tree. I am hoping that DNA may solve this mystery. I do not know for sure that the Blake line that I believe Charles descends from is the same as my Blake line. Finding a male to test his yDNA in that line would be really handy but it has not yet happened.

Since I help to manage the yDNA study for Blake at FT DNA I do have access to lots of Blake lines but my own line remains obscure primarily because of only children in the line for three generations and then my father was an only child a number of generations later. We do have autosomal matches with descendants of Thomas Blake and Sarah (Coleman) Blake which proves the line back to Thomas but as of yet no male Blake yDNA for this Upper Clatford/Andover family other than my brothers.

I thought I would write this blog post to see if anything came from my putting down in writing what I have been thinking. Again this line on My Heritage is not a male Blake line so no possibility of testing. The Blake ancestry is back several generations.

I think I will do what I usually do simply make people aware of all the information already available on the Blake line at Upper Clatford.

DNA Painter or Phasing Grandparents or both

Now that I am well into using DNA Painter and can see the benefit of putting all known matches into profiles (I now have 15 profiles), I decided to have a deep look at what I was doing. I discovered that my husband's profile was 49% complete with all of his known cousins painted. I was not making any progress on phasing his parents or grandparents because he is the last one of his generation (all grandparents, parents and sibling have passed away). But painting his nearly 70 known cousins has proven to solve that problem. Some of the chromosomes are almost complete including the X chromosome which I thought might be a real challenge to produce. The X chromosome passed to his mother by his maternal grandfather shows up beautifully in the colouring. This section of the chromosome having come from my husband's great grandmother Mercy Ann (Rathbun) Link. Matches on that chromosome that do not carry any autosomal material will be quite distant but that line can be traced back to her mother Eliza Jane Hotrum who was born 22 Feb 1831 in Upper Canada and the daughter of David Hotrum and Mary Baker Smith. Eliza would have received one X chromosome from her father coming directly from his mother Catherina Jons (married to Conrad Hotrum) and the X chromosome she received from her mother Mary Baker Smith would have come from her father Henry Smith and her mother Elizabeth Baker. Until DNA Painter arrived the process of looking at these DNA results from cousins was quite cumbersome.

Looking at myself and my four siblings who have tested and our matching cousins I am coming up with smaller percentages of completion - between 10 and 15 % only. However with so much material and around 30 known cousins (a lot in the same family lines), I had phased my grandparents. The painting proved to be a good check on that phasing. Using the same colours is helpful! I am still painting in just four colours whether in DNA Painter or phasing but eventually I will go to eight colours for the great grandparents.

Because of my experience, I can see a benefit to doing both if you have sufficient material to do the work of matching. I use both charts for an unknown match even yet for my family lines. I had started to phase my husband's chromosomes but was finding it pretty slow going.

Reworking the Blake yDNA website at FT DNA

Yesterday I started to rework the DNA results page for the Blake yDNA project at FT DNA. I have only worked on the I haplogroup thus far. It is something I have meant to do for quite a while but time didn't present itself and still time is a little short. I will gradually convert the results from their current status to SNPs of the larger part of each of the individual groups. The decision I need to make is do I include all the members in the new group when the alleles match although they may not have done deep clade testing? It does imply an assumption on my part unless individuals match members within the group who have tested. It was easier looking at the I haplogroup because I have more information on these groups. My Blake line tested by my brothers is I-L161 haplogroup and in the case of our line further defined by Big Y as I-PH3480. The other member in this group is not related to our line in thousands of years. Eventually as we move forward with this new style of referring to the individual groups I will break down the individual haplogroups into subclades even if they have only one member.

The R1b haplogroup is massive for Blake and I need to think carefully how to work those groups. The R1a is fairly straight forward as it turned out although just one member has done deep clade testing,.

52nd Wedding Anniversary

My husband and I have now reached our 52nd Wedding Anniversary. We married relatively young, I was 20 and he was 23. One prays for many more years together and God willing that will be so.

This morning we went out for an early morning brunch of blueberry pancakes which we much enjoyed and drove about the area for a short time.

Then back to our desks to work on our genealogies.

I wondered if I would ever be able to put together Lazarus charts for my husband's parents but the arrival of DNA Printer has been such a marvelous tool. Even though Ed is the last of his immediate family (parents and brother all deceased), I have managed to paint 49% of his chart with cousins. I have a good picture of his parents and grandparents as a result. I have actually managed Lazarus Charts for his father at 918.8 centimorgans thus far. His father died when he was just two years of age. I thought his mother might be easier but not enough people have put their results up on Gedmatch thus far. Her chart is just at 600 centimorgans.

1.   Pincombe Charts, original One-Name Study at the Guild of One-Name Studies
These Pincombe Charts were created by the two researchers in the original One-name-study at the Guild of one-name-studies. I reprint them with the thought in mind that others could add to the knowledge of these charts. I have reworked some of them and will publish that information when complete. I am publishing the chart for Roborough – High Bickington in this issue of the Pincombe-Pinkham Newsletter.

The link for the original chart (image below):

This is not a set of Pincombe/Pinkham families that is familiar to me. Any information on any of these lines is most welcome and if you wish to write up an article on the family at Roborough-High Bickington it would be interesting to understand more about this line of the family.

Find My Past has a record for a John Pinkombe Senior (90 years of age) buried 11 Jan 1640 at Roborough. There are mentions of burials for Jasper Pincombe (1652) and John Pinkcombe (1596) but I was unable to verify the children of the John Pincombe mentioned in the upper left corner.

The record of the marriage for John Pinkombe and Mary Moors 30 Jan 1614 at Roborough is listed in Boyd’s Marriage Index.  The original image is online at Find My Past with the name of John’s wife given as Marye Moore in the parish register. The five children listed on the chart just below John and Mary do have records mentioned on Find My Past at Roborough as well with the death of the first John recorded as Jan 1615/16 and his baptism 3 Dec 1615. A second John was baptized 17 Nov 1616. Elizabeth was baptized 7 May 1626 daughter of John and Marie Pinkombe. Anthony was baptized 3 Apr 1629 son of John and Mary Pinkombe. A John Pincombe was buried 1 Dec 1647 at Roborough and his will was probated 1647 with place mentioned as Roborough.

More work is needed on this chart to verify the entries and add new information.

The acknowledgements for this chart are found in the upper left hand corner mentioning the name of one individual who has provided information to the original researchers.

These tables represent many years of work at the record offices by the two original Pincombe-Pinkham family researchers and Richard Pinkham was a physician and able to make contact with some of the Pincombe families living in Devon. The names seen on these charts usually in the top corners are individuals who provided information for that particular chart. In the case of charts from the United States, Galen Pinkham has contributed a great deal of information to the descendants of the Pincombe/Pinkham family and this information can be found on the charts which he produced. I do remind other researchers that there are discrepancies in these charts and I would appreciate knowing of any that you may find so that eventually a corrected chart will be published.

Temperance Pincombe was the wife of William Pincombe and this line appears on the North Molton – South Molton Chart (Chart 1-2). This William is said to be the son of William Pyncombe and Margaret Gregorye who married 26 Nov 1564 at Nouth Molton. This William Pincombe (married to Margaret Gregorye) being born circa 1540 and living at North Molton. The father of this William Pincombe is said to be William Pyncombe married to _____ Snowe and they lived at East Buckland (and North Molton). One generation back William was said to be the son of Thomas Pincombe who lived at Filleigh and North Molton. Temperance was the daughter of Hugh Pollard and this line appears on the Visitation of Devon 1620 (copy included in this newsletter).

The Thomas Pincombe mentioned is, I believe, married to Johane (unknown) who left her will in 1563 (he appears to have left a will in 1544 which was destroyed during the bombing of the Exeter Record Office (World War II) and this will was written up in Volume 1 Issue 1 of the newsletter). The Visitation does have one of the sons of Thomas named William and married to the daughter of ____ Snowe of Anstey, Devon. There are three sons listed for this couple on the Visitation: William, John and Richard. William was married to Temperance Pollard and the exact transcription of the Visitation follows for the portion dealing with the testator and her husband:

William Pyncombe of Southmolton and of East Buckland in Devon, and Coroner of the same Countie 14 or 15 years together, aet 54, 1620. Will 28 June, pro 17 Dec 1625 P.C.C. (Clarke 138)

Temperance da. Of Hugh Pollard, 1 son of Robert Pollard, Esq, brother to Sr. Hugh Pollard, Kt., both sonnes to Sr Lewis Pollard, Kt., the Judge. Extrix of her husband’s will. Will; 7 Mar 1636-37, pro. 15 June 1637. P.C.C. (Goare 94)

Richard the brother of Temperance Pincombe’s husband is my ancestor.

William, if he was 54 in 1620, would have been born circa 1566. His grandmother, Johane Pencombe, in her will of 1563 does not mention that her son William is married but does mention that her sons Richard and John are married and that they have children. The birth of this William son of Johane’s son William after her death fits in with the will.

3.   Autosomal DNA Study
I continue to have new matches with autosomal DNA with my many Pincombe cousins. The autosomal matches are now taking me back to the late 1600s and I am working through a particular Pincombe line which is matched by one of my cousins to determine if the common ancestors for this particular match are John Pincombe and Johane Blackmore. Unfortunately it is not possible to share autosomal results online and still maintain privacy for the individuals in the various studies.

I am still not yet ready to discuss the yDNA Pincombe-Pinkham family study.

4.   North Molton Parish Records (Part 9)
These baptismal records are transcribed from the fiche of the original Parish Records for North Molton, Devon. I have changed the orientation of the newsletter to make it easier to publish the transcriptions for North Molton directly from my Excel file. The number at the beginning of each new line of information is from my Excel file so that I can sort and resort back into the original order.
