New Match on My Heritage

A wonderful new match on My Heritage greeted me today. She is my second cousin twice removed on my father's side so a really great addition. Since some of the five siblings tested match Blake very well this has been a very interesting addition and a check on my re-phasing of my grandparents and every match worked so that is a good end to all of that or a beginning depending on the thinking around it. Mostly I think of each of these renditions (this was the fourth) as being just a step on the path because new matches are always coming in to help me to see that path forward. Again the temptation entered into my mind to work on my great grandparent's phasing but I still think that is a lot of work that I can not conclusively show to be true without more second cousin matches on all sides. I do have a lot of second cousins they just haven't tested or haven't tested where I can see the results. Always tempting to write and ask but I think DNA is pretty personal so do not add such information unless it is first mentioned by the person writing to me.

All in all a very interesting New Year's Eve Day for sure. There were several other interesting matches which fitted into known patterns. I do like to check all of my matches every couple of days.

Blake Newsletter and the end of the old year

New Years Eve Day and it is cloudy and overcast. Not sure what the weather will bring our way but we are all nestled snug in our homes these days with Omicron about. We will make a Fish Soup for dinner tonight as that has become our custom the last couple of years. It is quite interesting beginning with onion and garlic in butter and then add four kinds of fish (we usually choose small scallops, shrimp, salmon and cod but it is actually meant to be just ends of fish you pick up at a fish market). Once browned a little add a can of diced tomatoes and spices to suit and let that bubble away for 35 minutes. Then serve over crusty bread which has been browned in the oven drizzled with olive oil. A tasty and healthy meal to end the Old Year as well as being a good hot soup after a day spent outdoors although not so much me these days.

The Blake Newsletter is complete and I will publish it tomorrow on the website. I have been concentrating on my own line as it is perhaps the most mis-used line of all by genealogists over the years. Clarifying the ancestry of Nicholas Blake of Old Hall, Enham will probably be one of my life's works although I never intended to do genealogy. For me this is a one-name study and more of a personal history project than genealogy. My sister enjoys pulling out all the names in a family and reconstructing them. I only do that if I have to to make a path back in time looking at my one name studies. Although I have done a lot of work on all of my lines mostly just from the point of view of verifying the tracebacks with the DNA. I do know that my paternal grandmother never really thought about her actual father; her adopted father was so much more important to her and her actual mother had raised her anyway since she remarried. My paternal grandmother spent the first six years of her life with her maternal grandparents and uncles who were still in their teens when she was born. I may move to the Blake family in Devon next as there were thoughts that this line was descendant of the Andover Blake line but I have not been able to see that yet. I have quite a bit of material for this line so is perhaps a good place to move to next.

I am moving on to The Kip-Kipp Family Newsletter with its inaugural issue the first of February. I also have my H11 Newsletter on that date and it is the big issue of the year but does only take a day or two to put together. Although I will continue with the H11 Newsletter it has diminishing value in that my project is quite large as projects go but still only about 10% or less of all the H11 tested by FT DNA and hence not as meaningful as it could be. On the other hand if all of those people joined I am not sure I could keep up with it so there are blessings with every way you look at it.

God Bless.

Cleaning and the Blake Newsletter continuing

Very grey and overcast here today; perhaps another snow storm. The cleaning continues today and the Blake Newsletter in my rest periods. We are staying close to home these days with all the cases of COVID-19 about. Yesterday we made an interesting dinner with leftovers - a lemon garlic butter sauce on egg noodles with fresh tomato pieces, spinach and basil (and some leftover green beans) and with that hard boiled eggs and a focaccia that we had made last night with basil, tomatoes and parmesan cheese on top. It reheated nicely in the microwave. It was a nice followup to a ham and turkey casserole that we made with left over Christmas turkey and ate for three days it was so enormous. Today we will do a homemade pizza.

A lot to do as the end of the year approaches. My new FitBit has a lot of bells and whistles that I am learning to use. Although basically it is much like my earlier one but actually easier to use and the battery lasts even longer. There is a six month free Premium membership but can not yet decide whether to turn that on. The ECG is interesting but I have a Kardia as well. It is interesting being 76 actually and having all these extras in one's life. Still running my 40 minutes a day, walking for 45 minutes a day and 20 minutes of my calisthenics. It is actually easy to do all of that at home although going out for a walk is also very nice. I have been doing that all fall and into the winter. Edward and I used to walk around the large block every day (about 2 kilometres).

The Kipp Newsletter is mulling around in my brain as I think about sections that I could add on the yDNA. There are two distinct migrations into the now United States with the Kip family arriving in the 1630s from Amsterdam and coming to what was then New Amsterdam and now New York and the second group coming from Germany and their surname was mostly spelled Kipp. Over time the surname Kipp dominated for all including Edward's line. However, there is a distinct difference between the DNA of the two lines.

Breakfast beckons.

Day 2 of cleaning

Yesterday we did clean the entire top floor and today the middle floor is receiving the same treatment. The robot vacuum is a great invention and does most of the vacuuming. That leaves the dusting and scrubbing and I do that in 45 minute intervals. Works very well although I am tired by the end of the day for sure. At 76 heavy housecleaning is a chore.

The Blake Newsletter is well on its way and I am looking at Robert (will 1521) and Richard (will 1522) first of all to show that they are likely father and son and that Richard was married to Jone (unknown) whose will was dated 1527. These two parents of Nicholas Blake and much has now been written about him by me. He was one of the names that I retained from childhood that and that he lived at Old House which turned out to be a handy thing to have remembered. Although I worked my way back slowly through the generations I did easily reach Nicholas.

I found some items that I had completely forgotten about. I also am questioning the idea that the Robert who left his will in 1542 was the brother of Nicholas. In his will he mentions Nicholas first in a list and he is the first witness but does that prove that he was his brother? Living at Enham is also another possible proof. Enham was not that big a place but there are a lot of Blake males in this time frame all of whom I can pretty much place into the various Blake families. Another Blake researched Charlou Dolan did have Robert and Nicholas as brothers and I think in my newly into genealogy state it seemed natural to me that that would be true but I have now entered into that phase of genealogy where I always need some sort of proof to help me on my path. I actually do not find another Nicholas Blake in the area in this time frame so that is helpful for sure.

The wills from the 1540s and before are a challenge although the ones after 1540 are often in English rather than Latin which is helpful. In his will Robert does not name any of his six sons Nicholas and that has always concerned me somewhat. But on the other hand Nicholas did not name any of his sons Nicholas either. Not sure where the name Nicholas was introduced into the family. Robert is likely the name of his paternal grandfather who left his will in 1521. Could it be that Nicholas was the name of the maternal grandfather (father of Jone (unknown) Blake) and that thought has just occurred to me. Great to write a blog actually; you never know what is going to pop into your head at any given moment.

Back to the Probate of the will as it is really hard to decipher and I had left blanks when I first transcribed in back in 2014.

Just 45 minutes to accomplish as much as I can before cleaning calls me back once again.

Busy day yesterday

Yesterday was meant to be a slow day but turned into a busy day of shopping and building and creating.  I am pleased that The Kip-Kipp Newsletter has a draft form which I will add to over the next month to publish on the 1st of February 2022. It will be in memory of my husband and a tribute to his diligent work on the Kip-Kipp family of New Amsterdam. His interest went back to a chart made by one of his ancestors that hung on his uncle's living room wall. I saw the chart when we visited with them way back in the spring of 1966 when he took me to meet them as his fiancee. He was a lovely person very interested in Edward and what he was doing and proud that his nephew was going to do his PhD in Chemistry. He was the eldest in a family of four brothers (actually five but the first brother died as an infant) and Edward's father was his next to youngest brother. Tragedy had struck this family with both of the two youngest brothers dying rather young (the youngest was just 28 years of age and Edward's father was 45). We would spend the next 55 years trying to find the name of the father of their mutual 2x great grandfather Isaac Kipp. He was born/baptized 1 Nov 1764 likely in New York State as two of his sons gave New York as their place of birth. He was on the 1790 census at Northeast Town living next to or with his likely father in law Jonathan Mead (Isaac married Hannah Mead 29 Aug 1790). But that will come in the Newsletter and I am very glad to have it started.

The shopping and filling the car with gas were the outings for the day and although I meant to clear the ice away from the laneway I did not do that. Today we have a covering of snow. Unless it is enough for the company to come and clear it we will do that later.

Today I need to work on the Blake Newsletter which is due on the 1st of January. I believe I will write about Robert Blayke and Richard Blake (father and son). These wills are an interesting collection and the first one is mostly in Latin with the second one being in English. The linking part to the next generation is the reference to Richard's son Robert. I also want to finally look at the yDNA study for the Blake family. I have avoided it for ages partly due to lack of time this past year and a half but also the seven founding (at least) Blake lines are what I would have expected but not everyone expected to see that.

Another beautiful winter has arrived and I shall enjoy it to the full. It is by far my favourite season possibly because you spend most of it indoors working away at projects which is my preferred way of life.

On to breakfast. I am a little late today but I am not in a rush; the day beckons and being retired one just follows it about as the clock races towards bedtime!

Day one of the research path

Today I must begin day one of the research path into Edward's work and getting it blogged. I also want to put thought into the Kipp Newsletter which would begin 1st of February 2022. If I can get it started then maybe someone within the Kipp family group will pick it up. In the meantime it is a year since Edward asked me to write to one of his possible cousins with regard to the Kipp family. He had written expressing an interest but I just couldn't seem to sit down and write that letter for him (although I wrote a lot of other letters at the time). Now a year since Edward first entered into his decline although could not really see that at the time. He just suddenly experienced back spasms and couldn't stand readily on his own without assistance from a seated position. X-rays revealed old fractures in the spinal area so we did move to physiotherapy twice a week which did help somewhat but we now know that he was suffering from advanced encephalopathy. It was this mercurial illness that would afflict him from this time forward. His mind was still sharp to us and that is how we remember him still with the gradual weakness pushed into the back recesses of our brains. We would not; could not see it at the time; nor can we see it in retrospect. That is how we want to remember him.

But first I need to do some clothes washing and straightening up after being away for a few days. For me Christmas was a bit painful but I know that I did not show it. I was perhaps distracted somewhat but being in the same room that we have celebrated Christmas for nine years was somewhat difficult but as my mind floats back to the 25th (just two days ago) it is full of joyous memories of everyone getting what they wanted and lots of happy laughter. He was surely loving that seeing everyone so happy even though he could not be with us.

Now at home again, the happy memory is with me and the sadness has been locked away in that memory bank where we store things that are sad.

On to the day.

Home again on Boxing Day

A very busy couple of days but home again on Boxing Day. Our car has done only very short distances for nearly two years now but this time we did put on about 500 kilometres.

Hope everyone had a pleasant Christmas time.

Cleaning week starts tomorrow.

Christmas and COVID

Like 2020 COVID-19 spoils another Christmas in many ways as few can get together in a relaxed family time. Enjoy the day whatever you are doing.

Church on You-Tube and one of the pluses of covid.

Merry Christmas.

Preparing for Christmas

Slowly getting things together for Christmas and it will be a busy day for sure. All the presents are wrapped and just have some special foods to buy.

A couple of new matches intrigue me but will wait until later to really investigate them. Chromosome 1 is complete so I have accomplished what I aimed to do a month or so ago and completed that task.

The tasks ahead of me are somewhat monumental but will take them the same way; one step at a time.

Wow Booster is booked

I kept at it all day checking every hour for a vaccine spot and suddenly in the evening at the dinner hour there it was and we booked it. My daughter is much quicker than I am. I was starting to realize it was there and she said book it and it was done. It is actually just ten days earlier than she was due to have a booster under the old scheme of six months. I received mine just after the six months. For me, the heart rate is still up a little and I am at day 11 of receiving the booster (58 beats per minute) but that is actually a really good heart rate for an old person anyway but it will likely drop to 50 plus or minus two over the next week or so. The slight headache has disappeared or maybe it is just that I am cleaning and not as much time on the computer!

Getting ready for Christmas and I accidentally bought some clear cellophane with snowmen on it so decorated the doors. Did not put up the Christmas Tree after all; that would have been Edward's thing he always liked the Christmas Tree up and all the decorations. I like a few decorations and they are up; next year I will try to get out all the china ornaments and decorate the room but we are still somewhat cluttered and that would just increase the amount of stuff. Downsizing will continue but at a much slower pace.

All in all the year is coming to an end and this has been an extremely sad year for us but the world is gradually moving forward with vaccination and perhaps omicron will be the last big mutation of COVID-19 and we will move on to a better place like the world did after the Spanish Flu did its damage in the late 1910s into the early 1920s. No vaccine then and the death rate likely four times higher or more. We will see. The lesson is there though and the repeat of one hundred years ago is somewhat scary one would say.

Trying to book a booster

I have been on the computer trying to book a booster shot for my daughter in mid January but no luck thus far. Will keep trying and she tries when she isn't marking papers. She has been busy ever since she came home for the Christmas break. That is pretty usual. She is marking before Christmas and after Christmas doing research, working with her students and preparing for the next term's courses to get them ready. It is a busy life but she does enjoy it very much and her students are so very kind in their comments to her. Means a lot to her helping people get ahead in life. She teaches online mostly although does also teach in person. It depends entirely on the course.

Today's Bible Reading spoke to me as they often do but especially today.

 Titus 3: 1-15

And I especially liked the beginning:

Remind your people to obey the rulers and authorities and not to be rebellious. They must always be ready to do something helpful and not say cruel things or argue. They should be gentle and kind to everyone. We used to be stupid, disobedient, and foolish, as well as slaves of all sorts of desires and pleasures. We were evil and jealous. Everyone hated us, and we hated everyone.

God our Savior showed us
how good and kind he is.
He saved us because
   of his mercy,
and not because
of any good things
   that we have done.

God washed us by the power
   of the Holy Spirit.
He gave us new birth
   and a fresh beginning.
God sent Jesus Christ
our Savior
   to give us his Spirit.

treated us much better
   than we deserve.
He made us acceptable to God
and gave us the hope
   of eternal life.

This message is certainly true.

These teachings are useful and helpful for everyone. I want you to insist that the people follow them, so that all who have faith in God will be sure to do good deeds. But don’t have anything to do with stupid arguments about ancestors. And stay away from disagreements and quarrels about the Law of Moses. Such arguments are useless and senseless.

FitBit wearing out

My two year old FitBit is gradually wearing out. It still charges well but the strap is going although I think I can purchase another strap for it. I would like to get the next stepup in FitBit but will maybe wait until next Christmas. Time will tell. I do live my life by that FitBit. It governs my every hour keeping me on my feet for at least ten minutes every hour except when sleeping. It has also shown me how to work with my Sleep Apnea. It is an amazing tool really especially for an older person.

Chromosome 1 is in the works and perhaps I will finish it today. It is nice to have almost completed a task I set myself to nearly two years ago. So much has transpired in these nearly two years of COVID-19. We have a vaccine which is an enormous plus. We have lost Edward which is a minus. He was very much the central figure in our lives. Our world revolved around him as we did what he wanted and generally listened to everything that he said. He didn't want to leave us really and would have liked to have lived to be 90 but God, in His Mercy, took him home to be with Him. I am sure of that; more sure as the days pass. His illness completely filled his days by the end of his life; he did not have time for anything but handling his illness.

As we move into 2022 I must start to function more at 100% instead of just hanging on and keeping things going. There must be more of a forward motion to my life where my accomplishments (totally personal) actually get accomplished.

I have produced thus far 402 pages in a word document this year of my thoughts through the year. Just ten more days and probably another five pages or so. I never intended to write daily when I first began my life story but the last couple of years have been strange; the strangest of my life.

I notice that my heart rate is still elevated so must be producing lots of antibodies. I will still avoid people as much as possible.

Chromosome 2 completed and Chromosome 1 in the process

I actually had not planned to work on the last two chromosomes but I had to be at my desk for another reason which gave me free time to work away on the chromosomes so I did do that. Chromosome 2 went smoothly principally because of large matches with known cousins. Chromosome 1 may also run smoothly as there are several large matches and time will determine that.

We have to build the storage shed (heavy plastic) and will do that on the next warm day. But we did move everything that we could out of the garage into the shed. So that is a step forward although somewhat exhausting.

It is pleasant to be back home again.  Someone parked their car across part of the end of our laneway the other day so put a note on their windshield asking them to please note that they were blocking the laneway and would appreciate if they would leave it clear. The properties are very narrow on our street and for a while we had a huge truck parked in front of our house until winter came. I do find it rather inconsiderate of people to do that day after day. The parking is meant to be for everyone not someone who can not be bothered moving their car/truck about in their own laneway. The best remedy is to widen your laneway if you have two vehicles and not constantly inconvenience people by parking a huge vehicle that literally takes up all the space between two laneways making it difficult to back out of your laneway and dangerous as school buses use our street and we need to have a clear view as they happen to stop right across the street from our house.

My beef for the day I guess. It will be nice once the car is in the garage. I am looking forward to that as it will help to protect the car as well from winter and not moving about enough.

Church on You-Tube today for sure

Received a bulletin from my Church last night that today would be the last in-person worship service for a while. Everyone will be on You-Tube. Omicron is dominating our lives for a bit but once over this hump we move forward once again and people are getting vaccinated. We are at 80% of our population and on the way to 86% of the eligible population. The two million die-hards who will not get vaccinated are simply not being realistic I think. The vaccination helps to slow the virus and limit its effectiveness. Even if you are selfish and only think of yourself you would still be maximising your opportunity to avoid the virus.

Looking forward to being at Church on You-Tube in real time. That hasn't been possible for a few weeks but can always happen here when I am here. I do love my Church; it is my restorative in life. It lifts my soul to an awareness of God that just isn't there all the time in everyday life - I try to have it be there but life runs away with one at times.

Gradually getting everything sorted about. Still the tent to erect and we have another snowfall which is glorious to behold but will make the tent building somewhat more difficult. The laneway clearing though is working very well. All scraped away right to the door. I do like this company.

Other than that I continue finishing up Chromosome 3 and should do that today hopefully. Still a bit of a muddle here and there but better to just carry on and wait for a good match which is known to me to help with that.

Chromosome 2 and 1 are the longest chromosomes but I do have some nice sized matches on them to help me with that part of the quest towards phasing my grandparent's DNA. Indeed over the 23 chromosomes I mostly have complete coverage of all of my grandparents so could, in theory, construct each of their chromosomes and that is tempting just to see what it would look like to put that on Gedmatch and run them against their database. They were all born between 1872 and 1886. A project for the future perhaps; time will tell.

Chirstmas Tree or not

Still debating putting up the Christmas Tree but I likely will do that. It is such a wonderful tradition and there are so many memories built into those ornaments. Edward and I started buying an ornament for the tree when we first started to attend so many repositories from 2004 onwards. Especially when we traveled we would buy ornaments to celebrate that memory on our tree each year. The first ornament from a far away place was one that I purchased when I was in London, England with my oldest daughter in 2001. It is an image of St Paul's Cathedral (London, England) which they produced for sale in their boutique. It is a beautiful ornament.

Starting to feel the effects of the booster shot; a small headache by night and my heart rate is at 58 instead of the usual 52 or less. When it gets down to the high 40s I do tend to find that that is perhaps too low but it doesn't seem to affect me overly. Since I have low blood pressure (generally 95 over 55), I often think the low heart rate perhaps goes along with that. It is interesting that when I run my heart rate tends to be around 160 to 165 beats per minute. One generally takes one age and subtracts that from 220 to give you the maximum heart rate (which would only be 144 in my case). However, I have been running for a good part of my life so I guess I tolerate 160 to 165 beats per minute which is more like what you might expect if you were 55 to 60 years of age. Perhaps a good sign; no ideas on that I am not a physician! Presumably I am building up lots of antibodies although I do not generally go anywhere and do not spend any time with people but I do grocery shop and go to retail stores especially at Christmas time so a booster was a good plan. Plus being a good citizen means that you get vaccinated when the time interval for you comes up.

Finally completed my revamp of Chromosome 3 for all five of us. Just have to work the matches in and will do that today while I am cleaning. I want to thoroughly clean the entire house from top to bottom over the next couple of days plus get the garage ready to receive the car and set up the portable tent to put the swing and picnic table in making room in the garage. My daughter still has work projects to complete but will help me with the tent since it is definitely a two person job. She will need a fresh air break for sure.

It is nice to be home for awhile although I will miss my other daughter and family. It is the first time that I have spent so much time with my grandsons. They are growing up quickly and soon I will not be a very important part of their lives. It is nice to have this time just as I had time with my grandparents. I think it is good for children to see all stages of life although watching their grandfather slowly fade away was a really hard task for them. They are still sad about grandpa; the oldest did a run last year where he had on a shirt that said he was running for his grandpa (to help him get better was of course the intent). It isn't easy to watch for sure especially for the young.

Back to work; tons of that to do.

14 degrees celsius yesterday

A very warm day yesterday and it did do a lot of melting. Time will tell whether it all melts away but there is a Colorado Low headed this way which generally brings a heavy snowfall with it.

Getting caught up with housework at the moment. We need to put up a plastic storage shed to cover the swing and glass picnic table so the warmer day was a bit of a nice gift since the patio has all melted away and the swing is dry. Usually they go in the garage but I want to put the car in the garage for the winter. That will help to protect it from the weather since I am not driving it very much at the moment. Plus the snow cleaning company will be able to scrape the laneway right to the garage door. I am enjoying the winter. Tempting to try out my ice skates on the pond. I haven't skated since 2014 when Edward started having a problem with his balance. He loved to skate and really did not want to give it up. But he slipped one day and just luckily between a bench and myself he managed to stay on his feet. We used to skate up and down the canal a number of times most weekends. I certainly do have a lot of memories to share with his grandchildren. They are missing him very much. Just old enough, both of them, to really member him well and to realize what they are missing. That is a pain that it is sad to see children go through actually. I was eight when my grandfather died and it was a couple of years before that missing was replaced by good memories and I moved on.

Today some cleaning and clothes washing. The days pass very quickly and it will soon be a new year - 2022. Twenty eight more years until 2050 when the Domesday Clock tells us that earth will be less habitable unless we make huge changes. Omicron has forced us back into a stalemate once again although the vaccines are helping. Will COVID-19 go the way of the Spanish Flu and just gradually diminish over time. Anyone who lived through Spanish Flu could tell us the frustration of that one coming back again and again. This time the vaccine has given us options and we need to make good use of those options.

A busy time ahead

Moving away from my own genealogy (Chromosomes 1-3 still to do) and getting back to organization of the life around me. There is a lot to do. I have been away from home for three months for the most part. My few times home I have not been able to accomplish very much in terms of organization.

We have thought through the delivery of Edward's mother's Hope Chest to her eldest granddaughter and we will make a trip to southwestern Ontario in 2022 and deliver it ourselves along with all the dishes. They will have a great deal of meaning for her eldest grand daughter. Then she has a daughter who also knew her great grandmother and will likely treasure all of these things as well. My daughters have made a good decision I think. They also were very fond of their grandmother but spent considerably less time with her.

I need to work some more on Edward's material. I need to organize how I am going to publish the first issue of the Kipp Newsletter on the 1st of February. That will be one of my main goals in this next time period of my life.

The snow is beautiful here. So fresh and clean outside of my working room window. I do so love the winter time. It is cold but the house is warm and the views are lovely.

Big item for these two days is Christmas presents. I need to go shopping.

I really did not notice this booster shot. No sore arm. I am a little tired but I have been busy. This is day three of the booster shot and soon I will have 70% protection I believe is the number being thrown about. Since I always wear a mask when out everywhere I will hopefully continue to evade COVID-19 and its derivatives. I do need to get my blood work done as well and the usual cancer screening tests done every couple of years. But in general I feel quite well once again. My weight has stabilized albeit I am about eight pounds thinner than I was but Edward and I ate differently; he did like his desserts and did persuade me to have some of them. Mostly I do not eat desserts except for yoghourt and plain cookies and not too many cookies! He liked to eat out as well and that can be fairly salty as well as heavy in starch/sugars. I eat very plainly so am basically back to my weight when we got married over 55 years ago now.

Macbeth's seven stages of life

William Shakespeare is a man of the ages. His works still stand as interesting; thought provoking and applicable to life. Amazing that over 400 years have passed and his words have resounded through that entire time period. Seeing the reincarnation of the Globe Theatre in London was very interesting and can not think why today it should come to mind.

The seven stages of life: infant, school aged child, lover, working life, attainment of position in the working life, retirement and then senility. Although Shakespeare was referring to a man it is really applicable to women as well. We all go through life these days in pretty much that order except you might replace attainment of position with motherhood. Once one is a mother than that pretty much dominates your life all the way to retirement and beyond.  In the scene the world is described as a stage on which we play our part. I always thought he was expressing the thought that every one of us has a part to play in this world whether rich or poor; clever or slow. That is life.

Chromosome 3 is still not coming together for me yet but I shall continue to plug away at it. Not having a good lengthy known match at the beginning is troublesome and the ones that I do have that are known to me are a bit short and at the 4th cousin level where I could be matching them but slightly differently than thought so risky to use as a basis. Matches flow in every day though and I have reworked the phasing once again and just completing that although thus far no changes. Will see how that flows as I complete it once again.

I need to do some Christmas shopping so must get into that. I always mean to do it earlier but I wanted to think about it and the time has passed. Hopefully there are still some items in the store that I am interested in purchasing.

Vaccine once again

I have now had my booster shot for COVID-19. Home once again with my daughter as she has returned from the United States and likely just in time before any quarantine rules come into effect on people returning from the United States after a couple of months stay. Because she had three flights with two leaving from American cities she had to have a PCR test as well as a rapid test in order to satisfy the rules of both countries. It is an expensive proposition to travel these days. She has been very careful though always wearing a mask when in public and shopping and at meetings. Plus she is also doubly vaccinated and will get a booster when the time interval has been fulfilled. We have lived a quiet life she and I since Edward died. We spent a lot of it putting together his library to donate to the Ontario Genealogical Society Ottawa Branch. He had many published books on family material which will help a lot of people. Edward suggested doing that and he loved helping people with their genealogy as he discovered. Edward and Gordon Riddle (Edward's cousin) went to the first meeting (at least it was Edward's first meeting there I do not know if Gordon Riddle was a member) of the OGS back in the early 80s; Genealogy did not interest me at all back in those days nor does the collection of people related to me even yet. Actually I could not really see the point in doing it although did not say so. How, I thought, would one separate out all the Blake lines for instance in Andover. When I did finally buy the fiche for St Marys Andover I was somewhat shocked to discover how few Blake entries there actually were and likely all for the one Blake family there at least until the 1750s (must finish my transcription one of these days although Ancestry is going to do the Winchester Registry Office). One must be wary of the myths that spread about a family.  Edward was ambivalent about belonging to a genealogical society as well but was persuaded by Gordon Riddle to go with him but he quite embraced the idea and became a very busy member with them for nearly fourty years. Myself I  will not belong to the OGS but did continue my membership with BIFHSGO (must watch my pennies) as all of my ancestry is British Isles unlike Edward with his deep Colonial American ancestry in both the Royal Colonies now Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Pennsylvania and the Dutch Colonies of New Holland now New York and New Amsterdam now New York City. Perhaps because his people had come in the 1600s including the early Dutch in the 1620s they had lost over time the immigration stories of their ancestors so he was quite thrilled with all the information that he found at the NEHGS and NYGBS libraries during our many trips to Boston and New York City after he retired in 2004. Some of it was made for story books to be honest; I still quite marvel at his list of ancestors and how they had been lost to time until he rediscovered them for his own family and his many cousins.

I will though make a donation to the OGS on the anniversary of Edward's passing each year to help maintain his book donation to the library. It is a lot of work to maintain a library and the volunteers within the society are to be thanked for their ever attentive and careful attention to the library.

Backing up my work. I tend to do that whenever I make a change in my work schedule rather than sticking to a first of the month rule (and I mostly work on DNA for myself as my sister does the family genealogy). I actually do not make many changes to the bulk of my work as I tend to concentrate on one or two items at a time and back them up each day. Still working on the Siderfin book although have not mentioned it I realize. It is all typed now and I am inserting new material into it. Probably it will take a couple of months especially if I need any new images from Kew as they need to have the time to copy them and then email them to me.

Dog softly snoring

Life is back to normal; the hydro is up and running once again.  The older dog is softly snoring. He is sound asleep on my bed. He loves his morning snooze with me it would appear as it has become a pattern the last couple of months. The puppy can be exhausting for her and she takes her naps during the day when she is quiet. She is a really good big sister to the baby. They share a grandparent I think. However, they do not look that much alike as one takes after one line and one the other.

Both dog are quite large. The baby is growing rapidly and will soon be her sister's weight (about 60 lb) so I have been busy training her not to jump up on me as she will knock me down for sure. She is doing very well with that actually. I haven't had her jump up now for several weeks. I could still pick her up then but she is too heavy now.

I did not work on Chromosome 3 online yet. It is almost ready to go and I am looking forward to working on it. I do not have very many large matches (2nd or 3rd cousin) on this chromosome. But I do have a lot of matches - small ones that are known to me but can not necessarily be trusted as they are smaller -  68 in total from 23 and Me, FT DNA, My Heritage, Ged Match (Living DNA and Ancestry). We have four kits on 23 and Me, five kits on FT DNA, five kits on My Heritage, 4 kits on Ancestry and 4 kits on Living DNA. There are a lot of matches as a result of all that testing. Siblings testing is a really good idea even if you know most of your ancestry back to the 3x great grandparents. I just have two lines that are a mystery back to that level. The first my paternal grandmother but I must admit that the My Heritage Theory of Family Relativity is rather interesting looking at her possible father's line. The priest added a second middle name at her baptism of Cotterill and there is just one family in that village with the surname. However both were pretty young at the time. The other mystery is my maternal grandmother's mother with the name Ellen Taylor although surprisingly there are not that many in Birmingham born in her time interval. She was just 37 when she died (my grandmother was 11 and did talk about her mother on occasion - mostly sadly that she would die so young) and my grandmother did remember some things about her that she did share with me. But not a lot it was a very sad time for her as she had to leave school and stay home to take care of her younger siblings (the youngest was just one year of age).

Online briefly

Online briefly as the hydro is out but the generator is running but do not want to overtax it.

Chromosome 3 is now planned and will begin doing some of the preliminary work that doesn't require the internet very often.

Will have to watch You-Tube for my Church Service when the power is backup again.

I got two new matches yesterday (all of us actually) - one was a 50cM length (plus other nice lengths) for Blake on Chromosome 2 so is very welcomed and the second is a 50 cM length on the X chromosome that my father passed to us from his mother so is Rawlings. No idea on who it is as no details at all but suspect it is someone living in England. Sometimes the matches on Blake can be very large coming down from my 2x great grandparents John Blake and Ann Farmer as I rather think this is a third cousin for the large match on Chromosome 2.

On my own for a couple of days

Decided not to go to the cottage this weekend so on my own for a couple of days. The cat and I are at home and enjoying the beautiful snowy landscape although it is warmer this morning just -1 degrees celsius. We do get these warming trends occasionally throughout the winter just to let us know that spring is around that corner after we actually get to winter which is still another ten days give or take away.

Winter is such a marvelous season. Time to contemplate; enjoy hot tea a couple of times a day when I remember. Edward was always good at remembering to have a hot drink. I get working away and barely remember to eat!

Chromosome 4 still occupying me. I had one match that looked like a leader but actually I think I am descended from one line on this person's mother's side (her mother has also tested) and from another line on her father's side (he does not appear to have tested although will check that out). So I am back to square one with a block of matches determining whether they are Pincombe or Blake. The comforting thing is that she is likely descendant of Pincombe and Blake (as am I) but different lines although the Blake I can see is my John Blake and Ann Farmer (2x great grandparents who lived at Upper Clatford; had a huge family and over fifty grandchildren who also had large families; they are a huge group).

Other than that the day is moving forward although not yet dawn. The cat is waiting for his food to dump and I must remember to get my breakfast in the next hour or so.

The Bible Reading today is from Ephesians 6: 1-23. I especially like Ephesians as it has many life lessons. One part speaks to me: Never stop praying, especially for others. Always pray by the power of the Spirit. Stay alert and keep praying for God’s people.

The Bible never ceases to amaze me in the way it captures life and has for centuries. The wills of my families tells me how close to the heart their religion was and how meaningful it was to them. God be praised for sending us Jesus to better understand Him and to teach us how to live our lives.

Another beautiful crisp white morning

I do love the winter scenes although must admit that Florida is also enchanting with its warmth on my arthritic bones.

Chromosome 4 beckons to me today and I shall work away at that. The bit that I did last night showed me that this is a difficult one to plot. We are so similar that differences to keep me on the right track are hard to come by.

Also want to work on my patient partner project. I have gone through it twice now and today will spend a little time thinking about that as well. The direction is always forward in life and these projects have been helping me to do just that.

Puppy escaped

In the middle of the night last night the puppy escaped from his bedding place for the night and around 1:30 a.m. came in and woke me up. I put her back and went to sleep and around 5:00 a.m. she was up again. Finally in the morning her way out was seen as she again went to jump the fence. Another new lesson for the puppy today; stay in your bedding area all night!  Being able to jump the fence doesn't mean that you should.

Carrying on with Chromosome 5 today and perhaps I will finish it and get started on Chromosome 4. This is an interesting chromosome because I was never quite sure which of the lengths was Blake and which was Pincombe and all five of us are similar. Finally I have a few matches that help to differentiate in the lengths where I was unsure. Looking forward to having a good sample of Chromosome 4 in the next little while.

I am also working on one of my study projects as a patient partner. Very interesting work and it has been so challenging during COVID-19 for hospitals to continue with their research. The world may have to revolve around COVID-19 but good research in many fields is still ongoing and our warriors in the hospital continue to make strides forward in handling so many diseases and conditions.

A little sleepy today but this is cleaning day and there will be some cleaning to do for sure after a puppy escaped in the night!

Chromosome six finally completed and Chromosome five ready to go

I am actually surprised at the ease of working with these larger chromosomes but I think working down from Chromosome 23 is better than my method of working up from Chromosome 1. I tend to do the hardest things first and it is perhaps not advantageous to do that in this case.

Another beautiful walk in the outdoors with the dogs early in the afternoon. They are starting to follow me about but occasionally make a huge run around the yard and then come back to follow me as I work my way around. It is really good exercise. Although I run fourty minutes a day I am running on a perfectly level surface so walking up and down the levels in the yard is really good exercise for me as it turns out. I notice it mostly in my feet actually.

Still entering Chromosome 6

A lot of matches for Chromosome 6 (some quite ancient in terms of genealogical time frame) to the United States and in my Blake line (from where they are matching likely the Arnold-Knight family). This chromosome has gone fairly smoothly because I have a number of matches in every one of my grandparent's surnames that have a good length. Makes it interesting as you can pretty much allocate any matches that you find on that chromosome to a grandparent line.

Lots of snow still and will get out again for my regular yard walk (10 times around the yard is about 3 kilometres so not too bad and the walk is interesting. Not as good as a true walk in the woods but with the dogs trailing along and running and playing is quite amusing. Sometimes the cat is there as well just to keep the dogs on their feet.

I have pretty much dedicated this past few weeks to working on the chromosome phasing for my grandparents and it has been an interesting time. A few changes to what I had originally thought but it is a year and a half since I looked at these chromosomes and I have added in at least two hundred matches in that time to the database.

Still thinking about the Kipp Newsletter and how I will begin but I rather think I will start it on the 1st of February 2022.

As a new day is born

Life begins at birth and so do the life lessons; all of which we must pass through on our way to adulthood and eventually old age. Perhaps one of the lessons is watching those we knew pass away. I can feel my age catching up to me the last few weeks as I had a cold; the hazards of living with grandchildren! But a cold makes you less healthy for a period and then in the winter regaining that lost strength is really hard as I learned with my husband. When you are entombed in a house you do not get your regular exercise. But I did get lots of work done which has its pros and cons; one is sitting too much when one works a great deal.

My eyes have become stronger again though and perhaps it is all the eye work; not really sure. My cataracts were definitely growing a little at my last checkup but luckily they are not yet affecting me. But I am an inside person; I love being inside. I am not a sun worshiper to any degree although do love the warmth of the sun. I do anticipate though that I will have to have cataract surgery one of these days though and time will tell on that.

Chromosome 7 is complete and it was a breeze compared to 8 but I expected that. There are lengthy matches in a number of my 2nd, 3rd  and 4th cousin matches making the reconstituting of the grandparent phasing of these chromosomes fairly straightforward.

Today I begin Chromosome 6 and I really do not recall much about this chromosome. I have a lot of matches; almost one third more than the last couple of chromosomes and there are some good matches in there but I haven't taken a peek yet. Will begin once again from the basic numbers and rebuild the powerpoint file that I used to store all of this delightful information.

Church on You-Tube yesterday

Managed to be with the Live Service of my Church on You-Tube. There are not so many people watching these days but still mostly more than 20 which is a good number plus a number of people who watch it offline.

Working on Chromosome 8 which is as difficult as I thought it might be. Finally got a working copy and got through about half of the matches yesterday. Today I completed the matches and the very last one that was part of a block ended up being a fourth cousin to a known third cousin and looking at the given details I felt confident to finally declare a string of matches as Pincombe. They are perhaps descendant of my 2x great grandfather's brother who lived in the mid-western United States although the matches seem a little small but I have very long generations so they could be several times removed with shrinkage in each generation rather than lengths passing unchanged. .

Busy morning - Saturday once again

Another busy day with Chromosome 9 taking up a couple of hours. I decided to rework from scratch but could not find the tiny glitches between two siblings (half match instead of no match in both instances). Decided to move ahead with it as I do have a few good long matches to prove Blake and Rawlings ( 58 cM and 42 cM along with a number of other long matches. It would just be nice to have a clean picture of the comparison without glitches.

Good snowfall last night and it is a beautiful picture postcard out the window once again. The sun is shinning but it is quite cold out. The dogs came back in covered with snow; they had a lot of fun and it is the puppy's first winter.

Perhaps I will sort all the matches for Chromosome 9 today.

Chromosome 11 completed - Chromosome 10 next

Finished up the day working on Chromosome 10 and redoing the phasing from scratch once again using the 23 and Me results for myself and three of my siblings. I still have to work in the fourth sibling from the FT DNA data and Gedmatch image. I have a very small number of matches on this chromosome in total and just six matches that are known completely to me in terms of ancestry. Other than a huge match of 72.4 cM most of them are just under 20 cM. This chromosome has eighteen crossover points for all five siblings with everyone having at least three and some four which is not too many spread over two chromosome lengths. Several chromosomes are a 50:50 split and one is a complete transfer from just one grandparent. In total there are only 30 matches on this chromosome so 24 are unknown although fortunately match some of the known matches making the task somewhat easier. Having so many Pincombe matches has been a great help in the process although on this particular chromosome I have just one single match for Pincombe but a fairly large Blake match and a good Rawlings match. Buller still tends to be one of the least known so continue to hope that one or more of my second cousins Buller will eventually test where I can match up with them. Again I have some good third cousins matches with Buller descendants still living in England and also living particularly in New Zealand and South Africa.

Spent part of the day cleaning yesterday and will complete that task today. I do not mind house cleaning; it is good exercise and keeps the dust down!

Snow continues although not increasing

Still covered with snow here in the north and it is most pleasant and enjoyable. There is something refreshing looking out the window of my work room and seeing the beautiful white snow all around me. I do enjoy it.

Finished Chromosome 12 yesterday and did the workup for Chromosome 11. Just have to now go through and make sure that the 49 matches all work with the results and that they are all painted in DNA Painter. Some small matches are ignored by me because I think they are matching just because I have all British ancestry and have nothing to do with a common link shared between cousins. They tend to be less than 10 cM. Sometimes they do work but in general I do not think that anything less than 10 cM is worth using as a proof of relationship.

December the first, another light snowfall overnight

Our beautiful white landscape continues with another small snowfall last night to welcome in December. Yesterday the walk around the yard was welcomed midday. Living in an area surrounded by trees means pretty fresh air. Although I grew up in southwestern Ontario I have not lived there now for nearly fifty years and going back seems really different for me. The City is so much larger that I grew up in although I can still find my way around. It just looks really different.

Published the Pincombe-Pinkham Newsletter this morning and it is on time. I must try to maintain my Newsletter schedule through the year - first day of the month every month there is a newsletter to produce and publish. All three are on subjects close to my heart although the H11 newsletter may be less useful as time passes. Time will tell.

The idea of a Kipp Newsletter is still part of my thinking and will discuss that with my eldest daughter to see what she thinks. It would be good to have her help with it somewhat. I do not really have a vested interest in creating the Kipp Newsletter and it would not be particularly centered on the Kipp family that my husband grew up in in southwestern Ontario. He had started to collect so much material on the Kip/Kipp family that it simply gives me a means to publish all of it and glad that I thought of it actually.

Other than that I continue with Chromosome 12 today checking all the matches, making sure they are painted in DNA Painter and removing any bits that do not match with the results. I often think these small bits are extraneous parts of DNA that simply match because all of our ancestry is from Britain (England, Scotland and Wales) except for a possible portion in Ireland from my maternal grandmother's mother whose mtDNA I carry and H11 is found in Ireland particularly my own subclade.

1.   Discussion: Who was John Pincombe who married Grace Manning at Bishops Nympton in 1725?

Again a person of interest to the writer in that he appears to be my 5x great grandfather by hearsay (my mother remembered the name Manning as being the surname of the mother of John Pincombe her 3x great grandfather (and my 4x great grandfather). Although I definitely keep to memory the stories that my mother remembered I do like to find the written proof for these recollections. My mother was remembering stories that her father had told to her and she was eight years of age when he died. I was eight years of age when my grandfather died and what he had told me about his Blake line was in my memory but literally had to be knocked out by the written documents. As I unfolded my family history in the records so the memories leaped out at me to remind me that my grandfather had known his line well and had tried to pass that information on to me.

The marriage reference for John Pincomb and Grace Manning can be seen in this fiche image as the last record on the image – John Pincomb and Grace Manning were married the 20th of March 1725 (this is old style of dating so we would now read this as 20 Mar 1726).

(above the white line)

John and Grace baptized three children all at Bishops Nympton.

William Pincomb was baptized 20 Jun 1727

John Pincomb was baptized 13 Feb 1728 (old style so 13 Feb 1728/29)

Grace Pincomb was baptized 7 Mar 1732 (old style so 7 Mar 1732/33)

I will insert in this location the baptisms for John and Grace when I am able to photograph the fiche. Since John is my 4x great grandfather at the time of photographing the fiche I chose to only photograph my direct line for the most part. That was years before the idea of a newsletter entered into my brain.

I did not find any burials for these children in the Bishops Nympton Register. I did go through the Registers several times and then I transcribed the entire set of Bishops Nympton Parish Registers (over 900 pages in a word document). Although I may well have done that anyway, the prime driver (it takes a long time to produce a 900 page document particularly from handwriting dating back to the late 1500s) that motivated me was the Bishops Nympton chart produced by the earlier researchers that listed my 5x great grandparents as a different couple with all the children of John and Grace listed with no further information. My ancestor was listed as John Pincomb and Catherine Bryer who had married 3 Nov 1732 at Bishops Nympton. The first step was to find the parents of this John Pincomb and they were listed on the chart as Thomas and Christian Pincomb (I do not have a marriage date yet for this couple). This Thomas was said to be descendant of a Thomas Pincomb of North Molton. I do not agree as I believe this Thomas was the son of John Pincombe and Johane Blackmoore. Thomas was their fifth child of six children. Their eldest son was William Pincombe who had married Mary Vicary 17 Jun 1685 at Bishops Nympton and more on this William later. They had two children John baptized 12 Jul 1692 at Bishops Nympton and Joan for whom I did not find a baptism but she was buried 26 Mar 1726 at Bishops Nympton. The earlier chart had listed the John Pincomb who married Catharine Bryer as having been baptized 24 Jun 1706 at Bishops Nympton and there is a baptism for a John Pincomb in the Parish Register. The onus of proof is always left with the writer challenging the written record.

I then moved to the land records as being the best means of separating these two John Pincomb one married to Grace Manning in 1725 and the other married to Catharine Bryer in 1732.

The Freeholders Index for Devon (

http://www.foda.org.uk/freeholders/intro/introduction1.htm) does show a John Pincombe as a copyholder at Bishops Nympton in 1741 and in 1751 and a William Pincombe yeoman also at Bishops Nympton in 1762 (in 1783 this William was buried at Bishops Nympton). In 1783 a John Pincombe is listed as yeoman, copyholder at Bishops Nympton (replacing his brother William who is deceased). By the wills it is possible to show that the land which was held by my John Pincombe from at least 1783 on until he passed it to his sons continued with the family that descended to my mother (daughter of John Routledge Pincombe and Ellen Rosina Buller). He acquired this property on the death of his older brother William Pincombe in 1783. But in 1741 it is necessary to show that this John is the John Pincomb married to Grace Manning. I then traced down the children of John Pincomb and Catharine Bryer.

John and Catherine baptized five children at Bishops Nympton – John baptized 18 Dec 1733, William baptized 29 May 1735 married to Ann Lock 6 April 1763 at Bishops Nympton (and their children William, Ann, John, Thomas and Catharine certainly used family names), Thomas baptized 8 Aug 1737 married to Hannah Tapp 26 Jan 1761 at Bishops Nympton (and their children Sarah, John, Hannah and Catharine again carried family names), Mary baptized 8 May 1739 and Elizabeth baptized 28 Jul 1742 married Thomas Tout 27 Aug 1766 at Bishops Nympton. The question begs itself why not the John baptized 18 Dec 1733 rather than the John I have chosen baptized 13 Feb 1728/29. The reason is that this John was older than his brother William and would have inherited the property first but he did not by the land records. Plus John Pincomb (father of this John) and his wife Grace Manning named their children William, John and Grace and again the forenames matched their family names).

Discussing William Pincomb married to Johanne Blackmoore will be my next project.

2.   Landkey Parish Records

These baptismal records are transcribed from the fiche of the original Parish Records for Landkey, Devon. I have changed the orientation of the newsletter to make it easier to publish the transcriptions for Landkey directly from my Excel file.
