Gardening and Genealogy

I have discovered that gardening and genealogy are not really very compatible. I have been gardening a lot the last couple of months and my genealogy schedule has fallen by the way side. I decided today that I would stop working on my scheduled names until the gardening is finished in the fall.

That will mean that when I begin again August 26 with the Dumoulin which would have been my next transcription/research day in logical order for the French Canadian research of our son in law and daughter's family.

Also for my own family I will start again with the King family  September 19. However, I will continue working on my Blake and Pincombe one name studies.

Lately I have been in correspondence with a Blake line that is found initially in the Somerset area, London area and then moved up into the Cumberland area and then back to the Isle of Wight. This Blake line was involved in the West Indes trade. I like it when people write to me about their Blake line because it gives me a chance to categorize groups of Blake.

A couple of weeks back I worked on one Blake line and was rewarded with a set of pictures which greatly add to any particular line. I was able to work back to a John Blake but too many of them to be sure of which line to continue back.

For my own Blake line I have not been spending too much time at the moment. I want to get back to the Abbotts Ann Registers once the Fall arrives again. It is hard to do microfiche in the summer as the light level is just too bright for too long a time generally from 4:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. It is nice to have the long day though because the winter days are short although not as short as in England. When my daughter and I visited in November it was already dark at 3:30 p.m.

Lauzon Family marriages

The most recent Lauzon marriage was in Ontario with Ontario Registration number 016425 between Télésphore Lauzon bachelor of 19 years of age, Roman Catholic living at Sturgeon Falls and the son of Augustine Lauzon labourer and Hélèna Brunet marrying Dora Lanoie spinster of 19 years Roman Catholic living at Sturgeon Falls and the daughter of Félix Lanoie labourer and Céline Rhéaume on the 23rd day of May 1919 at Sturgeon Falls and the priest present at the ceremony was the Reverend Charles Langlois with witnesses Ajugustine Lauzon of Sturgeon Falls and Félix Lanoie also of Sturgeon Falls with registration of the marriage on the 30th of May 1910 by the Reverend Charles Langlois at Sturgeon Falls, Ontario.

The parents of Télésphore being thus identified as Augustin Lauzon and Hélène Brunet who were themselves married at Notre Dame de la Salette in Papineau 17 Sep 1889.

It is perhaps a feature of the research but I had not noticed until now that the Buckingham register at this point in time was all in English. I suspect that the priest was Irish and the choice was Gaelic or English.

Lucie Labelle married Joseph Delphis Tremblay 4 Aug 1879 at Grenville and the parents of Lucie Labelle were identified as François Labelle and Marcelline Lacroix who were themselves married 19 Feb 1855 at Grenville.

Will of John Roland, 6 Jun 1702

I transcribed the will of John Roland and it read about the same as my first read through. No new information on his family other than his cousin was Martha Huish. He does not identify  his sister other than her forename Mary and he is remembering her child. However, put together with the other documents from the Surrey online catalogue it does prove to be quite interesting. I keep hoping to find something about my Christopher Buller (aka Christy Buller) and one of these days I suspect something will come to the forefront.

The other fascinating part of all this is that it is his own handwriting entirely. His refusal to waste money is quite fascinating as well.

Hemsley and Roland in Surrey

Continuing to check out the online catalogue for Surrey and looking at Hemsley and Roland whilst emailing back and forth with my cousin in England, the Roland/Rowland family gradually was teased out of the records. Elizabeth (my 4x great grandmother married to Henry Beard) we have concluded is the daughter of Matthew Hemsley and Mary Coal (married 14 Dec 1740 at St Mary, Newington, Southwark, Surrey) and born 16 Oct 1742 in Newington and baptized Nov 1742 at St Mary Newington. We know she married Henry Beard 31 Mar 1766 at St Mary Magdalen in Bermondsey, Surrey and was buried 22 Jul 1781 at St Mary Magdalen.

Elizabeth had three siblings: Mary  baptized 23 Aug 1741 at St Mary Newington and buried by 1750 (no record found yet), George baptized 20 Jul 1744 St Mary Newington and Mary baptized 14 Feb 1750 at St Mary Newington. We also have found that Mary (Coal) Hemsley was buried 27 Apr 1753 at St Mary Newington.

The parents of Matthew appear to be John Hemsley and Martha Roland who were married 6 Feb 1704 at St Mary Le Bow London with an interesting contract developed just after the marriage:

The coat of arms/crest mentioned above also appear in the Visitation of the Rowland family which is rather interesting as well. I pulled all the children out of the Morden register for the Roland family living there and includes Martha Roland who married John Hemsley.

I also downloaded the will of John Roland (father of Martha) and Martha was named as one of his executors along with Hannah in 1702. 

Since there was a Rowland Hemsley mentioned on their tablet was this a son of Martha married to John Hemsley? Rowland was 33 when he was buried 3 Aug 1746 (died 30 Jul 1746 age 33 years). He would have been born circa 1713.

The Registers of St Saviour Brixton are held at the London Metropolitan Archives and that is a trip for another time. 

Although I find the connection from John Hemsley/Martha Roland to Matthew to Elizabeth Hemsley tentative it is quite fascinating to look at it and verifying the truth of this relationship will be a future item. I did purchase John Roland's will and will put the transcription up online in the near future. However, I think I will wait to buy the wills of Hannah Roland and Elizabeth Roland (mother) to a later date. If I am not related, I do not want to spend a lot of time researching individual lines without the linkage proven.

Of course, I immediately had to put in Christopher Buller because he remains my brick wall in this particular part of England. Christopher was my 3x great grandfather married to Mary Beard (marriage not yet found but given the nature of this family it was probably at a peculiar). I know so much about Christopher in some ways but absolutely no idea of his parent's names. I know that he was a slop dealer/maker/cutter whose place of work was on Tooley Street in Bermondsey, Surrey. I know that he was buried 13 May 1832 at St Olave Bermondsey (as was his first wife Mary Beard, his two children who died as infants). St Olave Church was torn down in 1830 to make room for the approaches to London Bridge so that it remains somewhat a confusion in my mind as to how he was buried in 1832 at St Olave but I need to have a look at the records at London Metropolitan Archives one of these days. His age was given as 69 years giving me an estimate date of birth of 1763. Given that his wife, infant children and himself were all buried at St Olave I suspect he might have been baptized there and his parents belonged to this Church but the records are not on ancestry so must await my next visit to London. I was tempted this past trip to go to LMA but I knew that I would spend an entire day there (I would never have been able to go in just for a peek there is too much information there that I would like to look at :) ). We wanted to walk London and Westminster and Greenwich and that was our priority and I am so glad that we did do that. LMA can wait for another time.

However, back to the Surrey records coming up online. My cousin Robin Beard and I carry on a correspondence often separated by months as we go about our busy lives. But my discovery of this morming has resulted in my sending a lengthy email about our mutual Hemsley ancestors because I found a record that likely verifies the thought that Matthew Hemsley (father of my Elizabeth Hemsley) was the son of John Hemsley and Martha Roland who married 6 Feb 1704 at St Mary Le Bow with John Hemsley being a cheesemonger at St Saviour Southwark. This information has been the result of a lot of reading of parish registers as we pieced together the story of Elizabeth Hemsley (first wife of Henry Beard and my 4x great grandparents). Christopher Buller had married their daughter Mary Beard with their son Henry Christopher Buller (my 2x great grandfather) and his son Edwin Denner Buller being my great grandfather. I have spent an amazing amount of time on the Buller family line trying to discover the parents of Christopher.

The searching of the records for Tooley Street led me to a David Griffin who was a sailmaker on Tooley Street in the 1760s to 1770s which is somewhat fascinating as sails do not seem that far from sailor uniforms (slops). Another lead perhaps; a Griffin marrying a Buller perhaps and I shall track down another possible lead to see if I can solve this mystery. Likely it would be quickly solved if I was on the spot at London Metropolitan Archives and I look forward to that on my next visit. Next time I shall spend 1 day at Kew and 1 day at LMA. If I do not go with that thought in mind I would spend weeks there :)

Standing on Tooley Street near to where my Christopher Buller lived and worked was an exhilarating experience and one I highly recommend. Walking down Tooley Street and heading towards Bermondsey Street was walking the walk that he had likely taken thousands of times in his life. He and Mary had attended St Mary Magdalen on Bermondsey Street. Walking down Long Lane back to our hotel took on the feeling of history for me as well because Christopher eventually lived on Long Lane as found in the will of Jane Beard (stepmother to my Mary). This family moved at least three times whilst Mary was alive and I always wonder was it to accommodate the growing family - I suppose so.

Back to searching on the Surrey Catalogue and checking out all the possible leads that might help me to find Christopher Buller's parents. But also Henry Beard's family line may also be searchable in this database as Henry was a Tanner at Bermondsey and possibly the son of Edward Beard. I continue to search out information on this family and that will be my next search item for this database.

Newspapers and genealogy

Last evening at the Annual Meeting of the Ottawa Branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society John Reid gave an excellent talk on newspapers - what you might find in them and where to find them here in Canada. I have to absolutely agree with him that you find all sorts of nuggets in the newspapers. For my three only Canadian born ancestors (my mother, her father and his mother) I have uncovered some very interesting items just to add to the overall picture of them in particular my grandfather as he died when my mother was only eight years old. I heard a lot of stories about him as a child and when one is painted as the "black sheep" of the family it does stir your interest. I had expected to find items to prove the story but in all actuality every time I dug a little deeper I uncovered the story of a man surrounded by tragedy - by the time he was fourteen years old his mother had died, his younger sister had died, his younger brother had died and all of his beloved grandparents. He did have a lot of first cousins and this must have been very supportive for him but still the heavy feeling of death at such a young age must have affected him deeply.

On the other hand, whilst reading The Times I discovered the likely reason for my Pincombe family emigrating from Devon UK to Westminster Twp, Middlesex County, Canada West in 20 November 1850 arriving  at the Port of New York 7 January 1851. My 2x great grandfather John Pincombe (the emigrant) and his seven siblings were all orphaned by 1827 when their father Robert died (their mother Elizabeth had died in 1823). Their father had provided for them but land that had been held as copyhold passed to his younger brother Thomas or his older brothers John and William as that was the terms of the copyhold agreement. Robert had acquired freeholds though and was able to provide for his children. The oldest brother John had never married but did accept that Mary Pincombe Thorne was his child by Ann Smaldon. In the mar quarter of 1843 Mary Pincombe Thorne married William Smith at Ringwood Hampshire and hence her name was then Mary Smith just to tie in with the published accounts.

When John died in 1838 he left a small legacy in terms of a piece of property to Mary Smith and he had written a new will in order to add this legacy. There was however an earlier will. His brothers (William and Thomas) decided to conceal the later will and produced only the earlier will (they were executors for both). Mary had been told by John that he would give her this piece of property and so Mary took the brothers to court. This was the item that I found in the Times and indeed there were four articles describing how the brothers had actually managed to convince the court that there hadn't been an earlier will and the decision was given in their favour. In their "generosity" they took Mary out to dinner but they drank too much revealed to Mary that there had been a later will and that she was entitled to the property. With her husband's assistance, Mary then returned to the court and the brothers had to own up to the existence of the other will. They were fined and the land awarded to Mary. Although this had absolutely nothing to do with my Pincombe line I have a strong suspicion that it may have been one of the reasons that they sold their land and came to Canada. Also the eldest son of Robert Pincombe (older brother to my John Pincombe) had already emigrated to the United States having sold the freehold which was left to him by his father. Certainly family lore said that he had encouraged his siblings to come although they all chose to come to Canada instead of the United States.

Robert Pincombe's descendants still live in the Shawnee Kansas area and they were in contact with my Pincombe line into the 1920s although contact now has been lost. Newspapers can be very revealing and help you to piece together parts of the lives of your ancestors. My Pincombe family was written up in the London, Ontario newspaper a number of times which has also added to my knowledge of the family. I was also lucky as a child growing up to hear many stories of my emigrating ancestors; indeed I know all of their emigration stories but then I only have five sets of emigrant ancestors: Thomas Routledge and Elizabeth Routledge were my first emigrants (3x great grandparents) along with their 14 year old daughter Mary arriving in 1818; Robert Gray coming with his brother William c 1832; John Pincombe and Elizabeth Rew along with their 14 year old son William Robert in 1850/51; Ellen Rosina Buller in 1908 (along with her sisters), and Samuel Blake and Edith Bessie Taylor along with their 9 year old son Ernest Edward George Blake (my father and his parents).

Indeed John was so very accurate in pinpointing the many reasons to look at newspapers other than BMD information.

With my husband still needing a lot of help on my part, my blog has suffered dreadfully. However, I think all the gardening is good for me. I am not really a plant person but it is interesting figuring out what is a weed and what is plant to be retained. My hoeing is coming along slowly but I can manage the lawn mower fairly well. We have a large lot to cut which can occupy a large piece of a morning.

The Blake family group for Theophilus Blake has now produced an amendment to our article in Anglo Celtic Roots which I have now sent in for approval for the next issue of the journal. It is very interesting to see this rather large group of people (around a dozen) working together to solve the mystery of different haplogroups for what appeared to be two families both from the same area of Norfolk. In reality the story has now been developed around the proofs which were there but not seen by everyone so that a misunderstanding arose concerning his ancestry which is resolved. The next step is to write an article for The American Genealogist. I was hoping that one of the more "famous" genealogy writers might pick this up and run with it but it doesn't appear to be happening so I shall soon start to write the article with the available proofs. With a dozen authors it should make interesting reading as we develop it together.

I continue working on the marriages in the Blake family. It is an ongoing process and one that I have the highest priority on for my one name study. I need to know all the Blake families from 1837 on in the different areas before I can move back into the Parish Registers.

Tremblay family

The Tremblay family has been separated into generations and I will review the transcriptions done the last research day which was 4 May 2011 and make any necessary corrections or changes that I can do at this time and then carry on with further transcriptions for this post.

The marriage of Lucien Tremblay and Marie Bernard transcription review led to an interesting revelation with the bride's cousin Louis Blondin dit _uce appearing to be an important part of the marriage lines. I am somewhat stumped with the Blondin family line and this may prove to be helpful when I work on that line.

This marriage is found in Tanguay although the date is not recorded. I have not yet found the marriage but this is the date generally used for this marriage. The parents of Louis Séguin were identified as Jean Baptiste Séguin and Geneviève Barbeau who were themselves married 7 Jun 1710 at Boucherville. The parents of Jean Baptiste Séguin are identified as François Séguin and Françoise Jeanne Petit and they were married 31 Oct 1672 at Boucherville. François was the emigrant and so Generation 1. The present family is descended from three children of François Séguin and Jeanne Petit. Jean Petit was a Fille des Roi.

Jean Baptiste Séguin married to Geneviève Barbeau is Generation 2. His brother Pierre Séguin married to Marie Barbe Filion 4 Feb 1704 at Boucherville is Generation 2. Their daughter Françoise Séguin married to Antoine Vermet 17 Apr 1730 at St François (ile de Jesus) is Generation 3. His sister Françoise Séguin married Charles Patenotre 8 Feb 1694 at Montréal and is Generation 2.

Louis Séguin (son of Jean Baptiste) married to Marie Anne Raizenne is Generation 3. This generation is descended from two other sons of Jean Baptiste namely Jean Baptiste Séguin dit Ladéroute who married Catherine Raizenne and is Generation 3. The daughter of this Jean Baptiste and Catherine was Elisabeth Séguin dite Ladéroute and she married Antoine Quesnel 15 Nov 17612 at Lac des Deux Montagnes and is Generation 4. Pierre Séguin dit Ladéroute  (son of Jean Baptiste) married Marie Josephte Mallet 3 Feb 1739 at Ste Anne de Bellevue (Montréal) and is Generation 3. The daughter of Pierre and Marie Josephte was Marie Geneviève Séguin dite Ladéroute and she married Jean Noel Tourangeau and is Generation 4.

Hyacinthe Pascal Séguin dit Ladéroute married Marie Elizabeth Brabant 16 Nov 1761 at Ste Anne de Bellevue (Montréal) and is Generation 4. Hyacinthe also married Suzanne Léger and is Generation 4. This generation is also descended from the sister of Hyacinthe Marie Catherine Séguin who married Captain Françoise Villeneuve 18 Aug 1783 at Oka and is Generation 4.

Joseph Athanase Séguin (son of Hyacinthe and Suzanne) married to Jeanne Françoise de Chantale Brabant is Generation 5. Hyacinthe Séguin dit Ladéroute (son of Hyacinthe and Marie Elizabeth) married to Marie Louise Rouleau 7 Feb 1785 at Vaudreuil is Generation 5.

A very complicated descendancy for the Séguin dit Ladéroute family of the present generation and I will continue to transcribe documents on future research days. The present family is also descended from the emigrant Jacques Séguin married to Marie Badel 28 Nov 1689 at Montréal (son of Jean Séguin married to Marguerite Dupuis in France) and Jacques is Generation 1. Their daughter Barbé Charlotte Séguin married to Pierre Sabourin 23 Nov 1716 at Montréal is Generation 2.

Hémard dit Pot[e]vin family

Marguerite Hémard married Nicolas Joseph Grégoire 6 Feb 1837 and her parents were identified as Jean Pierre Hémard and Catherine Payant who were themselves married 14 Oct 1782 at La prairie. Their marriage proved to be quite elusive in that neither of their surnames matches the spellings given to them on their daughter's marriage lines.

A lot of work to do on that transcription but it does identify the parents of Pierre Aimard as Antoine Aimard and Marie Bourgis who were themselves married 29 Oct 1738 at Boucherville. The similarity is so much that Pierre Aimard must be Pierre Hémard.The marriage of Antoine Hémard and Marie Bourget is in Tanguay where the names are spelled Antoine Aymard and Marie-Joseph Bourgery who were married 29 Oct 1738 at Boucherville. The parents of Antoine were Pierre Aymard and Marguerite Bloys although the marriage lines read Pierre Aymard and Marguerite Belois when they married 6 Feb 1702 at Longueuil. The parents of Pierre were married in France and the marriage lines suggest that they still live in France. Hence Pierre Aymard married to Marguerite Belois are Generation 1.

Antoine Aymard married to Marie-Joseph Bourgery is Generation 2.

Pierre Hémard married to Catherine Payette dite St Onge is Generation 3.

Marguerite Hémard married to Nicolas Joseph Grégoire is Generation 4.

The next research day I will continue my transcriptions of the records.

I debated how to do my re-looks at the transcriptions and the best way would be to go back and correct them and post on the latest Grégoire post that I had done so with a date; since this blog is primarily a research tool for me that would seem to be the best methodology.

Nicolas Grégoire was first married to Thérèse Decoste and following her death he married Geneviève Patenaude 12 Jan 1807 (already transcribed). The parents of Nicolas Grégoire were thus identified as Nicolas Grégoire and Marie Catherine Guerin who were themselves married 20 Jul 1772 at La prairie (Montréal).

Transcription of this marriage the next research day.

Vincent at Spetisbury

The Vincent family at Spetisbury remains completely unknown to me. Ann Vincent married John Knight 9 Jun 1783 at Spetisbury. John Knight was not the son of William Knight and Mary Dashwood it would appear but was he a brother to William Knight father of Ellis Knight who married Eleanor daughter of John Knight and Ann Vincent? That is one of the puzzles that I hope the Dorset registers for the 1700s (once they are up on Ancestry) might help to solve. Most Knight researchers do make this connection and I have accepted their statements but remain unconvinced although do have the family lore of a cousin relationship between Ellis and Eleanor.

The OPC Dorset site does offer a list for the marriages at Spetisbury in the 1700s and I find:

9 Aug 1792 John Vincent and Elizabeth Evans married with Thomas Knight as a witness (Thomas though was often a witness so probably doesn't mean anything particularly)

2 Apr 1793 Joseph Vincent of Dewlish and Elizabeth Meader married (Thomas Knight witness)

24 Jul 1796 George Florance and Elizabeth Vincent married

26 Mar 1799 Benjamin Garrett and Amelia Vincent married (Henry Knight witness and again he was often so)

The next Vincent marriages are into the 1830s. I am curious why the marriage of John Knight and Ann Vincent in 1783 does not appear as other researchers have given me this information. From 1754 onwards where the listing of witnesses is recorded there is often a member of the Knight family with the earlier Knight being Henry. By 1774 the Knight member is Thomas. and by 1794 we are back to Henry Knight. 

The militia list of 1787 for Spetisbury lists two John Knight - one is a bricklayer with 1 child and the second is a servant bricklayer (apprentice perhaps?). There is also a William Knight bricklayer. By 1787 John and Ann Knight appear to have just the one child Eleanor Knight. Is the date of their marriage in error (and the place). The mention of a Vincent at Dewlish attracted my interest. There are a lot of Vincent marriages at Dewlish but not a marriage for John Knight and Ann Vincent. There are eight children attributed to this couple by other researchers:

James Knight born circa 1802 at Spetisbury married to Frances Butcher 16 Aug 1829 at St Pancras (London)

Samuel Knight born circa 1806 at Spetisbury

I am left to ponder whether these are all their children and the next research day for Vincent may find the earlier registers for Dorset online at Ancestry.

At this point I do find the marriage of François Richer in Tanguay but it is to Marie-Anne Brunet. I think the priest has perhaps made an error recording the maiden name of the mother of Paul as she is referred to as Marianne Brunet in his baptism (to be transcribed next research day). The marriage of François Richer and Marie-Anne Brunet took place 18 Oct 1723 at St Laurent. Again there does appear to be an error as François is listed with a second wife Marie-Joseph LeNormand but the records show that Marie-Joseph LeNormand married Pierre Richer. The parents of François Richer were Jacques Richer dit Louveteau and Marie Joffrion who were married 7 Apr 1698 at Notre Dame (Montréal). Jacques was born in France and hence the emigrant ancestor and Generation 1.

 François Richer dit Louveteau married to Marie-Anne Brunet is Generation 2. The present generation is also descended from Marie Joseph Richer (sister to François) who married Pierre Plouphe 11 Jan 1723 at St Laurent and is also Generation 2.

Paul Richer dit Louveteau married to Marie-Cecile Brisebois is Generation 3.

Paul Richer dit Louveteau married to Marie Jammé dite Carrière is Generation 4.

Bernard Richer dit Louveteau married to Adelaide Proulx is Generation 5.

Olive Richer married to François Audet dit Lapointe is Generation 6.

Tanguay does not list Jacques Richer dit Louveteau's marriage but only Pierre Richer. I have no idea on whether or not these two families are related.

Ellis at Winterborne Stickland

Working on the Andover Parish Registers I found an Ellis family there which was rather interesting given the later marriage of Sarah Ellis and William Knight and then their son William Knight and Eleanor Knight followed by Samuel Knight and Louisa Butt and their daughter Maria Jane Knight and Edward Blake. Coincidence or did this Ellis family which appears at Winterborne Stickland in the early 1770s spend time in the Andover area?

The family I am looking for is Ellis Ellis who married Sarah Wellspring 7 Mar 1738 at Winterborne Stickland; I have no information on Ellis and Sarah was buried 25 Jan 1780 at Winterborne Stickland (no age given). They baptized four daughters and probably one son at Winterborne Stickland:

Jane baptized 28 Sep 1742 married Atman Melchizedek 2 Jul 1762 at Winterborne Stickland.

Elizabeth baptized 3 Feb 1744 married John Upshall 16 Apr 1770 at Winterborne Stickland.

John baptized 14 Jun 1747 (although the parents are listed as John Ellis and Sarah this is perhaps a transcription error and I am eagerly awaiting Ancestry having the earlier Dorset records online)

Susanna (no baptism found yet) married Thomas Cocks 16 Jul 1772 at Winterborne Stickland.

Sarah baptized 5 Aug 1756 married William Knight 7 Aug 1775 at Winterborne Stickland and they had 8 children according to a number of researchers. I will look at these children in another Knight research blog.

After I found the Ellis records at Andover I did wonder if Elisha Ellis was called Ellis Ellis as the date of birth/baptism would fit very nicely into this family grouping. I have not found the Ellis family at Winterborne Stickland before 1738. Proving/disproving that will be interesting I suspect.

Investigating to see if the Ellis family lived nearby Winterborne Stickland it is possible to search the OPC Dorset website and I do find Ellis families in this area. I will continue to investigate the Ellis family in Dorset on my next research day

Audet dit Lapointe Family

Léa Audet dite Lapointe married Jean Baptiste Nepveu/Nepvu 4 Sep 1882 at St François de Sales, Point Gatineau. The marriage registration I have not yet found. However Léa Lapointe has lots of indicators on her parentage as she is found with her mother (a widow) on the 1871 census at Point Gatineau. Olive Lapointe with her four children: Cadelia 10, Léa 8, Hyacinthe 6, and Elie 3 living in the Township of Templeton, West Ottawa District. The 1881 census lists Olive Lapointe with her two sons Hyacinthe 15 and Elie 12 (both daughters are now missing). Although most trees report that the marriage was in 1882 I haven't found Léa on the 1881 census yet and will move to look at that today. Her husband to be is living at Point Gatineau - Jean Baptiste with parents Jean Baptiste and Adélaide. Proximity and the baptisms of their children assist in placing these two people into their respective family groupings but the marriage lines would be nice to verify this placement.

The 1861 census for the Lapointe family is one that I would particularly like to find and have not been able to do so thus far. I have found two rather interesting baptisms at St Hermas:

These two children (Mathilde and Zoé) do not appear on the census in 1871; the eldest child on the census is Cordelia age 10. Olive is a widow on the 1871 census. I will turn to looking for the baptisms of the other children and the burial of François Audet dit Lapointe. An hour of searching and no luck yet and I will return to this with the next research day for this family.

Knight family at Spetisbury and Winterborne Stickland

I really am brickwalled with the Knight family once I am back into the early 1700s and I would like more proof of the marriage in the 1760s between William Knight and Mary Dashwood 9 Aug 1760 at St Peters Shaftesbury Dorset and the children that are generally attributed to this marriage. Their daughter Jane Knight married John Hardy and they are the ancestors of author Thomas Hardy. The good news is that the Dorset records from 1813 have come on line at Ancestry and the earlier records are also apparently coming. I have not been able to purchase any of their records so this is a real boon to me in my Dorset families research with the Knight family forming a large group in that my 2x Knight great grandparents both have the surname Knight - Ellis Knight and Eleanor Knight who were married 29 May 1804 at Spetisbury.

My grandfather knew of his Knight family probably from his mother and grandfather. His grandfather Samuel Knight lived to be 83 years of age and my Grandfather was a father himself with an eight year old son (my father) when his grandfather Samuel Knight died 16 Apr 1912 at Turnworth Dorset. My father used to visit his great grandfather at Turnworth when he was a child and he remembered him as a tall thin white haired man but to a child that young I expect most people were tall. My great grandmother Blake (née Knight) looks quite tall in her picture though so it may have been true.

What I remember about the Knight family from my grandfather was that his grandparents were cousins and that they had eighteen children. I have only found 13 and I think I may have misunderstood the 18 and it should have been 13 but I think that he was telling me that they lived in the house across from the church and that it was a double house with Samuel and his wife Louisa Butt living on one side and Thomas (Samuel's older brother next in age to him) living on the other side with his wife Thurza Butt. Louisa and Thurza were sisters. A third brother-sister marriage was Abel Butt (brother to Louisa and Thurza) married to Martha Knight (youngest sister of Thomas and Samuel). When it came time to celebrate the birthday of the father of Louisa, Thurza and Abel, my grandfather and all of his siblings went to Turnworth for the 80th birthday party and he had been born in December 1801 at Winterborne Stickland. I think the party was actually in the summer of 1882 as my grandfather said he was seven years old at the time. It was an enormous family gathering apparently especially given the three Knight-Butt marriages and all their children and grandchildren/great grandchildren. More on that when I talk about the Butt family.

Maria Jane Knight (my great grandmother) was born January 1850 at Turnworth and baptized at the Parish Church 27 Jan 1850 (St Marys). We visited the Church with my second cousins in April 2008 and holding the enormous skeleton key in my hand was a monumental event for me. Perhaps it is my Celtic blood running through my veins but I felt a tremendous sense of connection to Samuel and Louisa at that moment in time as I am sure there were times when Samuel helped Thomas and probably held that same key (Thomas was the Parish Clerk of this parish for thirty years). Only the two generations were baptized there and that included Samuel Knight (my 2x great grandfather) born and baptized 25 May 1828 at Turnworth (surprisingly these records are not on Ancestry as I received a paper printout of photographs of the records from another researcher who had photographed them in the late 1990s as I recall. Before the days of digital cameras I guess as he didn't offer to send the original images. Not all of Samuel's siblings were baptized at Turnworth and his parents were Ellis Knight and Eleanor Knight mentioned above as marrying 29 May 1804 at Spetisbury. I am looking forward to the records before 1813 being available to look at their actual marriage lines to see if it answers the question was Eleanor the first cousin of Ellis Knight?

He is listed as living on Highfield Street and a number of the people living there are in the navy. I do not find him again on any census/burial record/marriage registration.

2. George baptized 28 Jun 1808 at Spetisbury; buried 18 Jul 1830 at Blandford (possibly) but likely dead before child 13 born.

I sorted through a number of the Dorset family records although none in my direct line and entered in baptismal dates and marriages dates/location. For the marriages I have just the registration district and these registrations give me the exact location.

The parents of Pierre Pichet are named as Pierre Pichet and Scholastique Lesage who were married 24 Jul 1724 at Cap Santé (although Tanguay has only 1724 I did find their marriage lines). The parents of this Pierre are named as Adrien Pichet and Elisabeth Léveillé who were themselves married 22 Nov 1694 at Pointe aux Trembles. The parents of Adrien were identified as Pierre Pichet and Catherine Durand and they were married 25 Nov 1665 at Québec. Pierre's parents were married in France and he was born in France so he is the emigrant ancestor and Generation 1.

Adrien Piché married to Elisabeth Léveillé is Generation 2. The present generation is also descended from a sister of Adrien named Marie Catherine Piché and she married Antoine Bordeleau 5 Mar 1696 at Neuville (Porneuf) and will also be in Generation 2.

Pierre Piché married to Marie Scholastique Lesage is Generation 3.

Pierre Piché married to Marie Angélique Gignac is Generation 4.

Louis Piché married to Josette Bénoit dit Vaillancourt is Generation 7. The present generation may also be descended from Pierre Piché married to Adélaide Pimparé dite Tourangeau 27 Nov 1837 at Ste Scholastique as their daughter Adélaide Piché married Jean Baptiste Nepveu 7 May 1860 at Grenville. I am still finding links between Jean Baptiste Nepveu married to Léa Audet dite Lapointe  and the above couple Jean Baptiste Nepveu and Adélaide Piché and Pierre Piché married to Adélaide Pimparé dite Tourangeau is Generation 7.

Emelie Piché married to Antoine Renaud is Generation 8.

Lambden at Andover and Stoke near St Mary Bourne

Although I knew by family lore information on Elizabeth Lambden (mother of my grandfather's grandmother) mostly because she lived to be 96 years old and worked as a shepherdess until her death; I have not been able to do much more than that with the Lambden family. Her father was Nathanael Lambden and he signed the marriage register as a witness for his daughter marrying Isaac Farmer. Family Lore has it that he was a wheelwright and I have not yet pursued that line of thought to find Nathanael.

 The best fit for Nathanael (including the unusual spelling of his forename) is from the LDS

No new information for this Nathanael Lambden but I did find the burial of his son Nathaniel at Hurstbourne Tarrant 30 Jul 1817 and a baptism for a son of this Nathaniel named Nathaniel born 15 Jan and baptized 18 Jan 1795 Hurstbourne Tarrant and the son of Nathaniel and Catherine Lambden. They lived at Upper Clatford for a period of time.
