The following information I extracted from the Mediaeval Soldiers database (http://www.icmacentre.ac.uk/soldier/database/) and it pertains to the Muster Rolls, Protection 1369-1453 (from treaty rolls, gascon rolls and scottish rolls for the years 1369-1453 they state only intention to serve and the individuals listed may not actually have ever served). There is a third database which is called the Normandy Garrison and covers the years 1415-1453.
Thank you to Barrie Blake for bringing this site to my attention. I shall endeavour to see if any of these particular records relates to the Calendar of Patent Rolls - a new project!

Blake Newsletter - Volume 2 Issue 2 and Blake/Pincombe research
Having reached the end of the Buller wills and my thoughts on this rather ancient family as I discovered with my last post and delving into the British History Online, I return once again to my one name studies. In particular I have spent the last day or so writing up the Blake Newsletter for 1 April 2013.
As always there is an enormous amount of material that I could put into the newsletter but want to keep it at two pages and hence just the most important items find a spot in the newsletter. I could make it longer but will wait for other individuals to send me items which they might want to make available to other Blake researchers.
I have now managed to place all of the Blake wills into counties and other locations which include onboard ship, with their military unit (land based), East and West Indies, America, Ireland, Wales, Europe, Isle of Man, Scotland, and one interesting category "unknown" and quickly reading through particular wills I have not yet been able to place them in any particular region. This is nine wills only. I would estimate that it will take be between eighteen months and two years to transcribe all of these wills.
In the meantime I am also still working on my flat file in excel of all the marriages from 1837 to the mid 1900s. It is a slow process although I am now at Hampshire so about one third of the way through the various counties. There is still the enormous job of pulling together the Blake families on the census with their marriage records and the births/deaths of family members where possible. Then trying to link them back to the Parish Registers of the various counties. This is only England and I have still the Blake families of Wales, Scotland and Ireland to look at and compile although have done a little on some of them. Then moving out into the world Canada is hardly touched by me or anyone else although my line is here it is a very short time period as my father was born in Hampshire, England coming to Canada with his parents in 1913.
The USA Blake family is enormous although there have been a number of the lines published (a discussion of the erroneous work of Horatio Gates Somerby has been discussed by others and myself at length) and then Australia which has perhaps the largest group of descendants of the various Blake families of England along with New Zealand. Not to be forgotten as well are the Blake families in other Commonwealth countries who trace back to the British Isles. Along the way I will not be looking at other "Blake" families that have acquired this surname as a result of their surname being "anglicized" at some point in their history. I will leave them for some other brave Blake researcher of the future!
The snows are slowly melting away in our back yard and with spring advancing rapidly my time will soon be divided up between genealogy and gardening. The longer days mean less transcription from fiche for me and this past winter did not see me return to Abbots Ann Parish Registers. That is one project that I wish to pick up as soon as possible. I wish to complete all my Parish Register Fiche for Andover and environs in the next six months or so. That will be for the Blake one name study and for the Pincombe one name study I want to finish the Parish Registers that I have for the villages around Bishops Nympton with Rose Ash, Merton and Molland still to do.

Buller wills now completed - is Buller a singleton ancestral family?
I have now completed all the Buller wills that were collected on our first trip to Kew. I did not find any answers to the question - Who is Christopher Buller with regard to his parentage? There are many unresearched lines in the Buller family and I now have a few good places to start working on that when the Buller day arrives in my research calendar. I would like to find Christopher in memory of my maternal grandmother as she used to talk about her family in England but she did not know the details beyond what I know and actually I was able to push back before her grandparents although she may have had that knowledge.
The Buller family is a quite fascinating one. They have played a huge role in the military history of the United Kingdom and I can only hope that one day someone will take on the Buller name as a one name study. This set of blogs will help them to get started plus I have other information. Would I ever take it on? That is a good question. Certainly not in the next ten years as I intend to devote a great deal of time to my Blake one name study and my Pincombe one name study. After that who knows.
The Hucks family at St Mary Magdalen Bermondsey interested me because of the middle name of Robert Hucks Buller, younger brother to my Henry Christopher Buller. He was a Cooper so perhaps was involved in a business way with Christopher Buller since they lived and worked in the same area of Bermondsey. Perhaps one day I will find a connection between the two families but at the moment that is quite unknown.
The earliest mention of the Buller family that I have seen thus far is in the Somerset Archives in the Bonvile family deeds etc. DD/HI/B/425 and involves a legal claim to wife's dower interest in property of her late husband, Alexander Buller, 1532. The Visitation takes the family back to Ralfe Buller who lived at Wood, Somerset.
There is a will for Alexander Buller at The National Archives which I did not acquire yet. I will purchase that one on the next Buller research day but in the meantime I found a transcription online in the Fulgham Family Database on World Connect: http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=bfulgham&id=I25202

From Somerset Genuki Knowle St Giles is a parish in the hundred of South Petherton, county Somerset, 3 miles SW of Ilminster.
From the Somerset Record Office Catalogue: A/CTP/2/1/92 - deeds relating to the manor of Knowle (St. Giles) dated 1485-1507 may have some information on Wood.
As I continued to delve into early Buller records I found on the British History online site: http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.aspx?compid=117094
For the Manor of Knowle:
In 1303 Hugh de Beauchamp and Ralph of Stocklinch held lands in South Illeigh and Knowle under Matthew de Esse and Humphrey de Kail. (fn. 29) This indicates an earlier subinfeudation of Knowle with Chaffcombe manor by Alan de Furneaux or Geoffrey his son to Oliver Avenel (d. c. 1226), and a subsequent descent with the halves of Chaffcombe manor through Avenel's daughters. The estate was subdivided, the Beauchamp half ultimately becoming the manor of KNOWLE ST. GILES, and the Stocklinch half comprising the farm or manor and mills of Illeigh. By 1386 two thirds of the Beauchamp lands in Knowle had been granted to John Dillington, probably in right of Elizabeth his wife, for life together with the reversion of the remaining third on Nicholas Buller's death. Thereafter the lands were to pass to Thomas and Joan Buller and their descendants. (fn. 30) When James Goodwin purchased John (VI) Buller's moiety of Chaffcombe manor in 1612 he was also offered Knowle manor for £800, but refused it. (fn. 31) In the same year Buller sold Knowle to William Powell, archdeacon of Bath (d. 1614), (fn. 32) who was succeeded by his son Samuel (I) Powell (d. 1656–7). (fn. 33) The manor then passed by successive sons to Marmaduke (d. 1682), Samuel (II) (d. 1722), Samuel (III) (d. 1738), and Samuel (IV) (d. 1739). (fn. 34) Sarah Powell (d. 1783), mother of the last, executed leases in Knowle until her second son Henry (d. 1769) came of age, and on his death she and her daughter Mary acted as joint lords. (fn. 35) Mary Powell (d. 1787) succeeded her mother and, on her death, the manor passed to her cousin the Revd. Thomas Alford (d. 1805) of Ashill, grandson of Samuel (III) Powell's sister Frances. (fn. 36) Alford agreed to sell the estate to Lord Poulett in 1797, although the sale was completed by Alford's widow Sarah, and son Edward in 1811. (fn. 37) Thereafter the manor descended through successive Earls Poulett, the lordship being omitted from the sale of the estate in 1912. (fn. 38) William John Norton was described as lord between 1927 and 1931, (fn. 39) but no subsequent reference to the manor has been traced, nor any mention of a manorhouse.
The first mention of Buller now is for Nicholas Buller in 1386 and it is that at his death there was a reversion showing that the "Stocklinch" half of the property in Knowle was involved in the name of his widow Elizabeth. The lands passed then to Thomas and Joan Buller and their descendants (Is Thomas the son of Nicholas and Elizabeth?). Is Ralfe a son of Thomas and Joan? No date is given for Thomas and Joan. The next date for a Buller on the British History Online site is John (VI) Buller's moiety of Chaffcombe manor in 1612 where the Knowle portion was also offered for sale but refused by that buyer (James Goodwin). However William Powell, archdeacon of Bath bought it in 1612 and as shown above it remained in the Powell family for a number of generations. This John (VI) is perhaps the John Buller married to Elizabeth Strangwais since he inherited property from his father John Buller of Lillesdon who died 12 Jan 1592 (married to Elizabeth Rogers).
Looking at the Visitation which begins with Ralfe Buller of Wood, Esquire and then passes down through seven generations to Alexander who died in 1526 is it possible to develop a possible timeline of these generations backwards? Alexander's son John was 24 or more at his father's death thus making Alexander about 45 or more in 1526 and giving him a possible date of birth of 1480 or earlier. His father was John Buller of Lillesdon married to Alice Sidman and this John's possible date of birth could be 1460 or earlier. Continuing in this line of though the father of this John Buller was John of Lillesdon married to Thomasine Orchard thus putting his possible date of birth at 1440 or earlier. The father of this John was John Buller married to Alice Beauchamp thus giving a date of birth of 1420 or earlier. This John's father was also John and married to (unknown) Gourney and with a possible birth date of 1400. Again the father of this John was John Buller married to Ann Staly so a possible birth date of 1380. The next generation back and the father of this John was Ralfe so a possible birth date of 1360 or earlier. The date known from the records for Nicholas Buller was 1386 and this was close to his death date likely. Nicholas' property passed to Thomas Buller and Joan his wife. If Thomas was the father of Ralfe that he would have had to be born around 1340 or earlier and his father Nicholas would have then been born around 1320. Is this reasonable? That would have made Nicholas around 66 or younger at his death on or before 1386.
Who then was Nicholas Buller and interestingly enough I wonder how he was excluded from the Visitation. What was there about Ralfe that made him stand out in the family remembrance when the Visitation was compiled?
Further down in the same article is a discussion of the capital messuage and farm of Wood:
http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.aspx?compid=117094
The capital messuage and farm of WOOD, later WOODHOUSE, was first mentioned in the early 13th century, when John of Wood, of Knowle, held lands in Chaffcombe, (fn. 49) and Andrew of Wood held a virgate of land at Knowle in 1235. (fn. 50) John Buller (d. 1485) held Wood in fee under Knowle manor in 1444 and his family claimed to have held and occupied it from a much earlier date. (fn. 51) Thereafter it descended with the Buller half of Chaffcombe. Alexander Buller (d. 1526) occupied the farm under Lord Daubeney, probably as lord of the hundred, and when the Bullers moved to Lillesdon they leased Wood to George Poulett in 1573. (fn. 52) There followed successive assignments of this lease to occupiers: to John Andrews alias Fry in 1582, to Amias Preston in 1590, and to Simon Courte in 1600. (fn. 53) John (VI) Buller bought the lease from Courte in 1604 and sold it with his half of Chaffcombe to James Goodwin and others in 1612, with which it passed to John Poulett, later Lord Poulett, in 1613. (fn. 54) The farm continued in the Poulett family, being occupied by John Bluet in 1701, until its sale in 1913 to J. W. Davison. (fn. 55) In 1920 he sold it to Holliday Hartley, and Hartley conveyed it in 1924 to Mr. J. G. Vincent, the owner and occupier in 1973. (fn. 56)
This record also mentions a John Buller (died 1485) who held Wood in fee under Knowle manor in 1444. Looking at my earlier thought on charting the family back there is a John Buller in this time frame who was the ancestor of Alexander Buller. No mention of Ralfe and I must admit to being curious why this is the person remembered rather than Nicholas Buller. Are they related?
The Buller family though in my mind has now been pushed back another two generations from the Visitation. Is it a singleton family? Are all the Buller families in England theoretically sharing the same ancestor? Is Nicholas the oldest ancestor of this family? When was the Buller surname first used. The 1386 reversion is now the earliest record that I have for the Buller family with that spelling.
The Calendar of the Close Rolls does have two entries for le Bulur - is this an earlier spelling of the name Buller? This publication found online at archive.org forms part of a series of Calendars of the Close Rolls from the reign of Edward I to that of Edward IV.
An earlier record mentioned was that of Thomas le Bulur dated 1203 and he was a witness in the Assize Court Rolls of Staffordshire. However, I have not yet verifed this information found on a commercial website. Was le Bulur the original spelling for the surname Buller?

Will of Samuel Hucks Cooper, St Mary Magdalen, Bermondsey, Surrey - The National Archives PROB 11/610/34
The testator is Samuel Hucks and he was a Cooper at Saint Mary Magdalen Bermondsey. His will looked like it was four pages so I was quite keen to transcribe it. However, I didn't notice initially but the fourth page was a repeat of the third page - unusual for The National Archives (and a first I believe in all the wills that I have read). I had hoped to learn something new about the Beard or Buller family in St Mary Magdalen however that was not to be. An interesting will though showing the passage of a business from father to son.
My interest stemmed from the second name of Robert Hucks Buller (younger brother to my Henry Christopher Buller). Perhaps he was someone that Mary Beard had known as a child or perhaps her mother had known her as the marriage of Henry Beard and Elizabeth Hemsley was celebrated 31 Mar 1766 at St Mary Magdalen, Bermondsey, Surrey.
The marriage of Mary Ann Hucks and John Homeward was celebrated at St Giles Camberwell Surrey 5 Nov 1765 (bride of St Mary Magdalen Bermondsey Surrey).

Will of The Right Reverend William Buller, Lord Bishop of Exeter, Canterbury, Kent - The National Archives PROB 11/610/34, probated 28 Jan 1797
The testator William Buller has been mentioned earlier in the blog in the will of his wife Anne Buller: http://kippeeb.blogspot.ca/2013/02/will-of-anne-buller-widow-of-exeter.html
This entry on William Buller, Lord Bishop of Exeter from: Lives of the bishops of Exeter: and a history of the cathedral, with an illustrative appendix, by George Oliver (published by William Roberts, 1861). Available on Google books and the applicable section following:
"William Buller, youngest son of John Francis Buller, Esq., by Rebecca his wife (daughter of Sir Jonathan Trelawny, Baronet, D.D., sometime Bishop of Exeter, and afterwards Lord Bishop of Winchester), and uncle of Sir Francis Buller, Baronet, the celebrated judge of the Common Pleas, was baptized at Morvall, in Cornwall, on 9th August, 1735. Whilst filling the office of dean (to which he had been elected on 25th March, 1784), he gave up his residentiary house near the cathedral to his Majesty King George III. and the royal family, when they honoured Exeter with a visit in August, 1789. Such dutiful and hospitable attention was rewarded in the following year by his preferment to the deanery of Canterbury; and his Majesty was further pleased to promote him to this vacant see, and on 2nd December, 1792, he was consecrated at Lambeth. He lived but four years after this appointment, dying on 12th December, 1796, and was buried on 17th of same month in the south aisle of the cathedral choir. His relict Ann (daughter of John Thomas, D.D., Bishop of Winchester) died 28th August, and was interred near him on 3rd September, 1800, aged 63."
Possible cause of death was noted to be the death of his son the gallant Colonel Buller who was slain on the Continent, he also lost two sons to consumption from The Monthly Magazine, Volume 2, by Sir Richard Phillips (published by Sherwood, Gilbert and Piper, 1796).
I was quite happy to find this reference as it just seemed quite dreadful to mention that his son had died in battle but not to have some details. "This was Colonel John Thomas Buller and he served in several regiments and was for a short time captain in the 60th Rifles. He was killed, whilst commanding the 27th Foot, at the crossing of the River Linge, and the intaking of Geldermelsan, in North Brabant, on the 8th of January, 1795" (Life of General the Right Honourable Sir Redvers Buller VC GCB GCMG by Colonel Charles Henderson Melville, CMG, Late Army Medical Service, Volume 1, published by Edward Arnold and Company, 1923: London).

Will of Benjamin Buller of Saint Margaret Westminster - The National Archives PROB 11/610/34, probated 28 Jul 1726
This Benjamin Buller is said to bear arms from the probate but I do not have any ideas on his line. He does name his brothers Richard, William, John and Julian and sisters Frances and Anne. There is also a Sentence for Benjamin Buller dated 28 Jul 1704 which is in latin and a project for the future. His will although dated 11 Feb 1701 was not probated until over 25 years later.
There is a Benjamin Buller on the Visitation but he is a son of John Buller of Lillesdon and Elizabeth Rogers and his father died 12 Jan 1592. Benjamin on the visitation would have been born prior to 1590 as he has a younger brother (likely). The interest that I have in this particular will is the area of Saint Margaret Westminster. This is an area where I have found my Henry Christopher Buller at least on census day 1861. The mystery remains for Christopher Buller (my grandmother's great grandfather). Every little piece fits into a gigantic puzzle but then that is what ancestry is all about fitting in the pieces!
From Find my Past Benjamin Buller is most associated with Suffolk and Halesworth in particular. No record though of him in Boyd's Inhabitants of London & Family Units.

Will of Frederick William Buller, Lieutenant General in His Majesty's Army - The National Archives PROB 11/2221/379, probated 17 Nov 1855
This will fits with the will of John Buller (blogged: http://kippeeb.blogspot.ca/2013/03/will-of-john-buller-esquire-westminster.html)
Frederick William Buller is the son of John Buller and Elizabeth Caroline Buller (second wife) and he was a Major General in the Army born 1778 and died 5 November 1855. He and his wife had a large family which included Frederick Thomas Buller, William Buller, Sir George Buller, John Buller, Charlotte Buller, Caroline (Buller) Lady Poltimore, Agnes and Georgiana Amelia (Buller) Hulse. Mentioned in his will: Major General Frederick Thomas Buller married to Lady Agnes Percy, Reverend William Buller married first to Leonora Sophia Bond and secondly Eleanor Coney, Sir George Buller, General, Commander 1 Battalion Rifle Brigade, Knight of the Legion of Honor and Order of the Medjidie married to Henrietta Macdonald, Caroline married to George Warwick Lord Poltimore, Georgiana Amelia married to Charles Hulse of Breamore.
This is the Buller family of Pelynt and they are descendant of John Francis Buller (he was the grandfather of Frederick William Buller (the testator).
The Buller family has played an enormous role in the military life of the British Isles and I just felt that I needed to do this will just to show how dedicated as a family they were to the United Kingdom. I am still hoping that sometime in the future someone will take on the one name study for the Buller family.

Will of Richard Buller, Merchant, London - The National Archives PROB 11/769/443, probated 9 May 1749
An interesting marriage in Find My Past at least the Vicar General Marriage Licence for Anne Watson and Richard Buller 1670. The present testator Richard Buller is a brother to William Watson Buller (will blogged: http://kippeeb.blogspot.ca/2013/02/will-of-william-watson-buller-merchant.html).
Boyd's Inhabitants of London lists this Richard Buller of St Olave Hart Street as having first married Helen Morris 17 Jan 1659 at St Olave Hart Street and he was a merchant and his son John was baptized 6 Nov 1660. He married second Anne Watson 17 Dec 1670 and he was a 33 year old widower at that time. Anne Watson of Maddam Scott Kent was 26 years of age.
The present testator Richard may be the Richard born circa 1666 and married 17 Dec 1691 at St Sepulchure to Bridget Williams also born 1666 and daughter of William Williams. Their son Richard was baptized 14 Dec 1693 at St Dionis and his mother died 3 Jun 1695 and was buried at St Dionis and Stepney. He then married Rebecca Finny at London Wall. A bit confusing on the dates as this second marriages appears to be 1691.
A few more details on William Watson Buller that he had a brother Richard. Finding him in Boyd's Inhabitants possibly gives a bit more detail. Plus I mentioned this Richard Buller in the will of Prudence Buller transcription: http://kippeeb.blogspot.ca/2013/03/will-of-prudence-buller-spinster-st.html .
This makes my question in that blog even more interesting: Who was the Richard Buller listed on the Hearth Tax in Saint Andrew Holborne in 1666. Is this the information which has convinced people that the father of William Watson Buller was Richard Buller married to Anne Watson and this will proves that Richard (testator) was a brother to William Watson Buller. However, still no information on the father of these two men.
Was Edward, father of Prudence Buller, a brother to Richard and William Watson?
There is a will for Richard Buller, English Merchant, probated 22 Jun 1691 that could prove to be very interesting. Must purchase it perhaps on the Buller day when it arrives.

Will of John Buller, Esquire, Westminster, Middlesex - The National Archives PROB 11/1144/353, probated 2 Aug 1786
An interesting linking will and this is the Buller family of Pelynt as they are referred to on the Visitation of Cornwall. John Buller (the testator) was the 2nd son of John Francis Buller and Rebecca Trelawny. He almost disappears from view as he is listed as C on page 58 and of course his details are on page 59 of the Visitation. The family of John Francis Buller was large (will blogged for John Francis Buller):
http://kippeeb.blogspot.ca/2013/02/will-of-john-francis-buller-esquire-of.html
and included his eldest son James (James Buller of Kings Nympton - will blogged: http://kippeeb.blogspot.ca/2013/02/will-of-james-buller-esquire-of-kings.html), John Buller 2nd son (the present testator), Francis Buller 3rd son (blogged: http://kippeeb.blogspot.ca/2013/02/will-of-francis-buller-esquire-of_27.html), William Buller 4th son (his daughter Anne married the eldest son of James Buller of Kings Nympton and his wife left a will blogged: http://kippeeb.blogspot.ca/2013/02/will-of-anne-buller-widow-of-exeter.html) and then daughters Rebecca married to Sir Charles Watson (mentioned in the will as a trustee), Elizabeth married the Reverend John Sturges, Ann married Reginald Pole, Mary married Sir Joseph Copley, Baronet. Just to place this will in the time period of the Cornwall Buller family. The will for the fourth son William who was Lord Bishop of Exeter and Dean of Canterbury was probated 28 Jan 1797 and I have not yet transcribed his will (I lately discovered it in my purchases and not transferred to the Buller file along with one for a a Benjamin Buller written in 1701). Again it does not fit into my Christopher Buller line as his children are being born about the same time as Christopher. It does however help to fill out the story for the Buller family of Cornwall especially the children of John Francis Buller as he had a very large family.
One of the testator's sons was Sir Edward Buller of Trenant Park (first Buller will blogged), his other two sons (by his first wife) mentioned in the will were Henry Buller (of Bengal, will blogged: http://kippeeb.blogspot.ca/2013/03/will-of-henry-buller-bengal-east-indies.html) and John. These sons all by his first wife Mary St Aubyn and then his children by his second wife Frederick William Buller (will to come), Caroline who married her cousin William Buller, George and Augustus.
