Still I am perplexed by Chromosome 23 and how to divide up the maternal portion I inherited from my mother. I have two known matches by 4th cousins but the length is really insufficient to say positively that I have phased this Chromosome 23 correctly between my two maternal grandparents lines - Pincombe and Buller. I have one match on my Routledge line (my great grandmother Grace Gray married William Robert Pincombe and this match descends from a sister of Grace's mother Elizabeth Mary Ann Routledge). I have one match on my Welch line and in this case the descent is from the twin sister of my 2x great grandmother Anne Welch who married Henry Christopher Buller. The amount shared is 10cM for the Routledge match and 8 cM for the Welch match. Fortunately they do not fall in the same area but they confuse a phased X chromosome which I produced prior to knowledge of these two matches. Do I go with the matches or do I go with the carefully thought through phasing that I did before the matches appeared? I am ambivalent. I wish I could find one of my known 2nd cousin Buller as their grandmother was my grandmother's sister. Likely we will share some X chromosome enough to convince me one way or another on how we have inherited our X chromosome from our mother. The paternal X chromosome is, of course, easy as that is inherited entirely from my father who received it unchanged from his mother and it was inherited by her from her parents - William Rawlins and Elizabeth (Lywood) Rawlins.
I have a new match on Ancestry lately which is also descendant of my Buller side likely back to my 2x great grandmother Anne Welch. It would be interesting to see if this individual has an X chromosome match with me. However, I have not yet written but will contemplate doing that to see if it interests him to pursue the match. It is a large match. Another similar match at 23 and Me is likely Welch-Buller with a 1.2% match and in this case the chromosomes have not been shared. I did write to this individual and verified our descent from the Welch family as being our most recent common ancestor. Perhaps over time she may share her chromosome results and again a strong possibility that there would be X chromosome results of a length sufficient to name the phased portions of the X chromosome with more accuracy.
This Blog will talk about researching my English ancestors from Canada but also the ancestors of our son in law whose families stretch back far into Colonial French Canada. My one name study of Blake and of Pincombe also dominate my blog these days.

Racoon
I missed all of the noise but apparently a racoon got into our attic. During a wind storm a few months back I thought that we had wind damage and we had someone come and look at it but he said no, it looked normal. Well that clever little racoon managed to get a fingerhold in that siding and he pulled it back and got in last night during a freezing rain storm. The animal retrieval people have put a trap in and hopefully he/she will soon go in there and eat the food.
Freezing rain again today and then snow tomorrow on top of that. It will be an interesting Christmas I am thinking. We are more or less ready for Christmas. I still have to write my family letter. This fall has passed very quickly although my new interest in a health care project is taking up a lot less time now than it was. Since the area I am living in is not part of their pilot project probably they could just pass me by. I will watch out for other opportunities to do health care projects though in the future. It was quite interesting and the course was very revealing in terms of how I could be involved in projects now that I no longer work in health care but could be involved as a member of the public.
I do not have any health issues but there are also wellness projects and senior exercise projects and they fit me to a T. I think that the more interest in senior aging the better. It will help to minimize the costs as this huge group of us passes through our senior years and avoid building new hospitals which may not be needed as the smaller group follows us through their life cycle.
It would appear that our racoon has left us through a one way door seeking water and food perhaps. If he/she made an attempt to return it has been unsuccessful. The animal came in on a nasty freezing rain night. Although sympathetic to his/her needs I do hope a better shelter has been located by him/her.

Genesis (upgrade from Gedmatch)
All of my kits have been converted to Genesis now and about half of them are research only so do not form part of any searches except my own. I have 21 matches with my Living DNA kit to other Living DNA kits on Genesis. Only three have a longest length of 12 cM or greater and only one is particularly significant at 25.7 cM. I match this individual at Ancestry and FT DNA. Like myself, they have tested at a number of sites but I can not yet locate her in my tree although I suspect endogamy in this case and the match is likely much further back than the length of the match would indicate.
I need to look at the other kit that that I have which was tested at Living DNA to see how many Living DNA matches there are.
2nd kit of interest: 16 matches with just one with a longest length of 12 cM or greater. At 13.9 cM it does not catch a great deal of interest from me as I really do not look a lot at matches of less then 15 cM. This match is on chromosome 17 between 5836860 and 10226337. Looking at my list for Chromosome 17 this is one that is only shared by this one sibling.
I always look at all of my matches with the thought that knowing I have 23,000 matches at Ancestry in their database of over 11 million (0.2% of their database) and that I have only 245 matches which are 4th to 6th cousin or less (0.002% of their database), I probably shouldn't expect to have too many matches in databases that are much smaller!
At FT DNA I have 2082 matches and 190 are 3rd to 5th cousin or less and their database is less than one million. Say it was one million then I have 0.2% of their databases as total matches and 0.02% of their database as 3rd to 5th cousin or less.
At 23 and Me which has a database of over 5 million I have 998 matches (0.02% of their database). I have 332 matches that are third to sixth cousin or less (0.007% of their database). I tend to know who these individuals are if they match me at least 0.50% but not always.
I am not that really surprised that I have only sibling matches at Living DNA. My father was an only child so no first cousins. His mother only had half-siblings so do have some half-first cousins. His father had eleven siblings but very few nieces and nephews except his eldest sister had a large family but thus far none have tested. My mother was born in Canada. She had just one brother and he did not have any children. Her father was virtually an only child as none of his full siblings survived to adulthood. He did have a half-sister but none of her descendants have tested. Her mother did have four siblings but thus far none of their descendants have tested as they would be my second cousins.

Ancestry DNA Circles - # 3
Although I like all the testing companies for various reasons, Ancestry's DNA Circles are a real treat for me. When I started my research no one had researched my lines other than the work done by my Pincombe cousins as far as I knew. As I moved backwards in time, my parent's stories and then my grandparent's stories aided me when I had to make choices. When those avenues ran out DNA suddenly started to be rather interesting keeping me on the narrow path backwards.
With 3 DNA Circles I am now looking backwards to my 4x great grandparents and being assured that in those three lines I have been accurate.
That includes my Pincombe line which has Robert Pincombe as my 3x great grandfather and that is certainly true and my 25 cousins that have now tested very much verify our relationship. The matches recently with cousins have extended this line back to the late 1500s and my 9x great grandfather Richard Pincombe but more on him another time.
It also includes my Blake line which has Maria Jane (Knight) Blake my great grandmother and wife of Edward Blake. Her paternal Knight line goes back to Ellis Knight and Eleanor Knight (likely 2nd cousins) who were my 3x great grandparents and their line easily goes back another two generations with the parish records (and paper trails). In this case, my latest DNA Circle is capturing her maternal line with her mother having been Louisa Butt daughter of Charles Butt and Hannah Arnold. Charles Butt, my 3x great grandfather, is my third DNA circle.
Also including my Rawlings line with my great grandmother Elizabeth (Rawlings) Taylor daughter of William Rawlings and Elizabeth (Lywood) Rawlings. With the help of the Lywood research project and other Rawlings researchers this is taken back quite readily to William Rawlins who married Mary Foord and they are my 5x great grandparents. The circle itself is based on Jeremiah Rawlings their son and my 4x great grandfather.
That leaves my maternal grandmother's line where I am able to trace her father back several generations but her mother is somewhat of a mystery due to the inability to locate the marriage record between Edward Denner Buller and Ellen Taylor. Perhaps one of these days a DNA circle will emerge as I have a number of DNA matches with Buller cousins but not so many at Ancestry.,

Myself at 73 with my parents, grandparents
I let my hair grow long this past year and now that it is winter it is somewhat straighter than the summer when it tends to be a curly mass.
My family thinks I look like my mother as they remember my mother very well when she was in her 70s.
So this picture has my mother top left and myself top right. Her mother, my maternal grandmother, bottom left and myself bottom right. I can not see that I resemble my mother or my maternal grandmother. They have a larger nose and a squarer face. Their hair even in old age is not as gray as mine is. In all cases we are about 73 years of age.
The lower picture is of my paternal grandmother top left. She was only 64 when she passed away from a difficult illness so looks more aged than her 64 years likely. But she has the pointed chin and smaller nose which are also my facial features. My father is in the lower left corner and his ages in these two pictures are 78 and 88 years of age. His pictures at 73 were not quite as clear so I used later ones and indeed he looked pretty much the same throughout his later years. I have his gray hair which was a steely gray. I have his smaller nose but he has a more prominent chin than I do. I think he took after his father for his chin.
The DNA shows that I inherited quite a bit of Rawlings (my grandmother's maternal family) rather more so than my siblings. Plus the X chromosome which I inherited from my father came directly from his mother unchanged so there is always that possibility of inheriting rather more in this line because of that transfer of X DNA. My matches do rather bear that out in my case.
I have meant to do this for a while and decided to take advantage of my long hair of the moment but as it turns out everyone is mostly wearing shorter hair or pinned back!
Interesting in retrospect that I was named Elizabeth and my paternal grandmother's name was Bessie although her mother was Elizabeth Rawlings and her mother Elizabeth Lywood. My mother didn't want to give me a short form that was not so commonly used at that time so decided that if I was to be named after my grandmother than it would be the full name of Elizabeth rather than Bessie. Indeed I was never a Bessie, Elizabeth suited me much better!
Once again my living memory is my blog and it has assisted me many times when I remembered I had thought about something and there it was five or ten years ago. It is now ten years since I started my blog.
Seemed incomplete so decided to do two more pictures to include all of my grandparents and further back.
This picture above has four generations of Pincombe men, in the top left corner my great great grandfather John Pincombe (I will add his wife Elizabeth Rew to another image), beside him on the top is my great grandfather William Robert Pincombe (I have his wife Grace Gray and will add her to another slide), bottom left is my grandfather (his wife Ellen Rosina Buller appears above in the first image), and then next to him my uncle William Edwin Pincombe. At first glance my chin looks similar to John Routledge but looking at it further I do not really think so.
This next image is my father's side. Top left my great grandfather Edward Blake and his wife Maria Jane (Knight) Blake beside him. You can see my father's chin in these pictures. Lower left is my grandfather Samuel George Blake, then my father, then my grandmother Ida Bessie (Taylor) Blake aka Ada Bessie Cotterill Rawlings. I continue to think I mostly look like Bessie, my paternal grandmother.I had forgotten about this picture though and her jaw does appear a little broader than mine. This is one of her later pictures.
This picture includes the wifes of John Pincombe (my 2x great grandfather) namely Elizabeth Rew (my 2x great grandmother) and the wife of William Robert Pincombe (my great grandfather) namely Grace Gray.
This last slide is the Rawlings family. Top row left is William Rawlings (my 2x great grandfather) and his wife Elizabeth Lywood (my 2x great grandmother). Below left is likely Elizabeth Rawlings but she is younger, I do not have an older picture of her and beside her is the last picture of my paternal grandmother. I think I may just be very right that I most resemble her with my somewhat pointed chin, smaller nose and perhaps heart shaped face but she herself doesn't really resemble her grandparents on her mother's side as these pictures are definitely of them.

Pincombe Charts, original One-Name Study
at the Guild of One-Name Studies
These
Pincombe Charts were created by the two researchers in the original
One-name-study at the Guild of one-name-studies. I reprint them with the
thought in mind that others could add to the knowledge of these charts. I have
reworked some of them and will publish that information when complete. I am
publishing the chart for Stoke-in-Teignhead in this issue of the Pincombe-Pinkham
Newsletter.
The
link for the original chart (image below):
This
is not a set of Pincombe/Pinkham families that is familiar to me. Any
information on any of these lines is most welcome and if you wish to write up
an article on the family at Stoke-in-Teignhead it would be interesting to
understand more about this line of the family. The number of contributors to
this particular chart number six. We did not visit Stoke-in-Teignhead when we
were in Devon in 2008 nor did we visit this area in 2016 when we were once
again in Devon. Torquay, on the English Channel, is to the south of
Stoke-in-Teignhead. We were in this area and also in Dartmoor National Park as
well as Plymouth.
Ephriam
Pincombe married to Mary Brown (of Ashburton) is mentioned at the top of this
chart and also mentioned is their emigration to the American Colonies in 1620.
I was not able to locate any information on this individual on Find My Past but
in Family search there is mention of Ephriam Pinkham in Maine Vital Records
between 1670 – 1921. A mystery which might get solved one day.
More
work is needed on this chart to verify the entries and add new information.
The
acknowledgements for this chart are found in the upper left hand corner
mentioning the name of six individuals who have provided information to the
original researchers.
These tables represent many years of work at the
record offices by the two original Pincombe-Pinkham family researchers and
Richard Pinkham was a physician and able to make contact with some of the Pincombe
families living in Devon. The names seen on these charts usually in the top
corners are individuals who provided information for that particular chart. In
the case of charts from the United States, Galen Pinkham has contributed a
great deal of information to the descendants of the Pincombe/Pinkham family and
this information can be found on the charts which he produced. I do remind
other researchers that there are discrepancies in these charts and I would
appreciate knowing of any that you may find so that eventually a corrected
chart will be published.

Robert Pincomb married Sarah Pearse 25 Sep 1701 at Oakford,
Devon. He was of Brushford and she was of Bampton (Find My Past). Brushford is
11 miles (18 kilometres) southwest of Bishops Nympton.
I do pay close attention to the name Robert as my 3x
great grandfather (born in 1775 at Bishops Nympton) was named Robert.
John Pincomb (son of Richard Pincomb and Francis
Gill) at Bishops Nympton (christened there 9 Dec 1604) married Elizabeth
Graddon 9 Feb 1640 at Roborough by Torrington, Devon. They had seven children
including a Robert Pincomb (their youngest) who was baptized 5 Aug 1668 at
Bishops Nympton. The Richard Pincomb mentioned as the husband of Francis Gill
was first married to Ann (unknown) (Ann died in 1600, buried 3 May 1600 at
Bishops Nympton). Richard and Ann Pincomb baptized a son William Pincombe 23
Mar 1599 at Bishops Nympton (my 8x great grandfather).
The Robert Pincomb mentioned in the above will said
that he had four sisters and I have listed as his sister Johan Pincomb,
Elizabeth Pincomb, Francis Pincomb, Emotte Pincomb and Grace Pincomb. The names
mentioned in the will Elizabeth Pincomb, Maria Pincomb, Joanna Pincomb and
Agness Pincomb. I have death dates for Frances in 1658, Emotte in 1692 and
Grace in 1670.
The Chart that was produced for North and South
Molton has a John Pincomb baptized 19 Jan 1622 at Bishops Nympton marrying
Elizabeth (unknown) 1647 and the children listed for them are as mentioned
above for John Pincomb and Elizabeth Graddon (namely Johan, John, Elizabeth,
Frances, Emmott, and Robert (Grace is missing)). Robert is not shown as
marrying but rather his brother John marries a Mary (unknown) and their
children are listed as John, Robert (married to Sarah Pearse), Elizabeth, Mary,
Jone, Abraham and Agnes. This is a good fit to the will mentioned above.
The North/South Molton chart (published in Volume 2
Issue 3 of the Pincombe-Pinkham Newsletter) lists Robert Pincombe as living at
Bishops Nympton and marrying at Oakford. The marriage is correct but the
original image has Robert Pincombe living at Brushford which is 18 kilometres
from Bishops Nympton. This is certainly still a possibility if Robert was of
Bishops Nympton since he would have only been 23 years of age at that time and
could have been living at Brushford for some reason. In the will though he
states that he is living at Bampton (his wife does appear to have her own
property as mentioned in the will. In the 1678 Return for the restoration of St
Pauls Cathedral there are no Pincomb names mentioned at Oakford, Brushford, or Bampton
only Roborough, Bishops Nympton, and Merton. Robert could have been apprenticed
at Brushford or living with one of his mother’s relatives and we do have the
name of an uncle David Bedow mentioned in the will. I was not able to pursue
that surname to any interesting results to assist in this case yet.
3.
Autosomal DNA Study
I continue to have new matches with autosomal DNA
with my many Pincombe cousins. The autosomal matches are now taking me back to
the late 1600s and I am working through a particular Pincombe line which is
matched by one of my cousins to determine if the common ancestors for this
particular match are John Pincombe and Johane Blackmore. Unfortunately it is
not possible to share autosomal results online and still maintain privacy for
the individuals in the various studies.
I am still not yet ready to discuss the yDNA
Pincombe-Pinkham family study. I need to survey some of the yDNA projects to
see what I can discover in terms of commonality of some of our results with
geographical yDNA results. A lot of work has been done by the administrators of
these particular yDNA haplogroup projects.
