Lane way all dug out and we have a snowblower as well but some digging is needed, walks cleared and a run for the dog. We can now relax for the day and do our jigsaw puzzle. My it is cold out there but we are used to having this cold for a few weeks every winter. I just hibernate!
Just finished the H11 Newsletter. I am somewhat surprised that I am now into Volume 3 of this Newsletter. It was started on a whim and I have found, for the most part, something to put into it the last two years. I find it a good venue for any thoughts I have or any journal articles passed to me or that I have found.
It is an interesting subclade of H in that it is so small compared to the real giants in this subclade H1 and H2. However H is still 30% of the world's mitochondrial subclades which is a very large number perhaps as many as 2 billion people are H haplogroup or more. H11 is about 1% of that so 20 million people have that haplogroup. There are two major subclades for H11 - H11a and H11b and I have seen 70% H11a and 30% H11b so we are looking at 14 million H11a and 6 million H11b. I have not seen any actual further divisions percentage wise but I estimate there are at least 500,000 to 1,000,000 people who carry my particular subclade of H11a2a1.
After FT DNA published their new mitochondrial tree, I realized that as large as my study is I am looking at only about 20 to 25% of the results actually tested at FT DNA. Although I enjoy publishing what I find it does not really reflect a true picture of the subclades of H11 I rather suspect.
This Blog will talk about researching my English ancestors from Canada but also the ancestors of our son in law whose families stretch back far into Colonial French Canada. My one name study of Blake and of Pincombe also dominate my blog these days.

Saga of the racoon
The racoon does appear to have left us. The one way door appears to have worked and he/she couldn't get in anywhere else. If ever the animal was going to leave I felt it would be garbage day and sure enough last Friday morning we could see tracks on our roof coming up from where the one way door was located. Thus far no new tracks and will check that out today as we got about 25 centimetres of snow yesterday. We are snowed in more or less although the roads do not look too bad today. The great buildup begins. We have about a metre of standing snow in our back yard now. Still cold here minus 20 degrees celsius this morning. We are promised cold all week and they are generally right about that. Love the winter, it is nice just to hibernate.
Genesis versus Gedmatch
Still running comparisons on my Genesis results versus my Gedmatch results. Discovered one interesting item today. A match with a known 5th cousin once removed changed slightly between the two databases. The match still shows up as schematically one match but the values show a break about in the middle. My match and I are related on my Rawlins line but the match has two Rawlins lines with her ?x great grandparents marrying descendants of two siblings (one of the siblings is my ancestor). Interesting to find the slight difference. It doesn't affect our overall match and I can see that I need to pay attention on Genesis to close together matches of less than 10 cM that I might have ignored in Gedmatch unless there was a reason to look at it.
Is Genesis more accurate than Gedmatch? I am beginning to explore that thought. I thought there wouldn't be much difference between the two but it does appear that slight differences are occurring and I am rerunning my larger matches and making a second record on each datasheet in excel for these matches.

1. Blake Pedigree Chart – Blake Museum at Bridgwater, Somerset. This is a recent addition to their website: http://www.bridgwatermuseum.org.uk/
The Blake Museum has given me permission to put these charts in the newsletter so I will continue with some of these Blake family lines. In the last issue of the newsletter (Volume 7, Issue 4, 2018), I used a number of these charts looking at a particular line as I was reworking the yDNA website layout. Time has escaped me once again and I have still not completed this task.
The last newsletter looked at the individuals who believed they were descendants of William Blake and Agnes (Band, Thorne) Blake. This set of results belongs to R-M269 as do several of the groups of results. The division of these groups was done by an earlier researcher and has suited the project for quite a while. However, yDNA has moved along and SNPs tend to be the means of separating sub clades rather than alleles. However, not that many members of the group have completed deep clade testing.
So how to rework the website so that it retains some of the original ideas but also incorporates the deep clade results that a number of members of the study have completed. I am going to look at E1 English Ancestry (4) and this group includes four members of the study who belong to R-M269. Two of the four members of this group have completed 37 markers only, one has completed 12 markers with the 4th having completed 67 markers. In total nine of the alleles are different from the usual values for this group. One member has four differences, two members have one difference and one member has two differences. If we now take the mean of this group and compared it with the mean of the group discussed last newsletter then we have the following differences
DYS391 DYS385 DYS439 DYS459 DYS437 DYS448 DYS464 DYS460 Y-GATA-H4 DYS456 DYS576 DYS570 CDY DYS534 DYS481 DYS520 DYS446 DYS617

I have chosen to compare the set of data attributed to the earlier researcher to the descendants of William Blake and Agnes (Thorne) Blake to this set of data (red lettering shows the differences, see *pdf on website) which has simply been named English Ancestry (4) with the members of this group having primarily south England ancestry in the Wiltshire/Dorset area. These two groups are not related in the genealogical time frame since their genetic difference exceeds 16 where differences of 5 to 6 might be acceptable to prove common ancestry in a genealogical timeframe. However they do belong to the same grouping R-M269. The next question would be have any of these individuals tested SNPs to determine subclade. They have not hence I will retain the structure of the earlier researcher but these two groups both belong to R-M269. This particular group has one member who is descendant of John Blake and Racheal Bevis. Does this couple appear on the Blake chart held by the Blake Museum? This couple does not appear on the Chart.
An interesting Blake line on this chart is related to one of my ancestral lines in the Somerset area and I will mention this particular Blake line in this newsletter.
These crops from Images 1 and 2 show an interesting (and historically speaking an opinion of the last couple of hundred years) descent from the Blake family at Calne to the father of Robert Blake, Lord High Admiral during the Commonwealth period of English History. Robert Blake of Bridgwater married Margaret Symonds of Taunton and their son Humphrey Blake of Bridgwater married Sarah Williams of Pawlett. This couple had a family of 15 children - 13 sons and 2 daughters (two sons died in infancy). The eldest child was Robert Blake, Lord High Admiral. The seventh child, and seventh son was Nicholas Blake, Captain in the Army. Nicholas Blake rather interests me in a personal way as he married Jone Question my 7th great grandaunt. They had a family of four (five) children which included three (four) sons and one daughter.
This crop of image 2 shows Nicholas Blake married to Jone Question with sons John, William and Nicholas and daughter Elizabeth. A number of online trees add a fifth child to this family – Zachary Blake. I have not been able to verify that Zachary Blake was a son of Nicholas Blake and Jone Question. In the will of Nicholas Blake (copy read at the West Heritage Trust: Somerset Archives online A/CGP/3/2) probated 24 Jun 1693 Nicholas mentions his wife (unnamed), his sons Nicholas and William and his daughter Elizabeth Rowe. He also mentions his grandchildren Thomas, Samuel, Sarah and Susannah Blake. There is also land mentioned in this document which had formerly been owned by Admiral Robert Blake (always an interesting find to prove the relationship between these two brothers).
Information is provided on this chart (Image 5) for the children of William Blake (son of Nicholas Blake and Jone (Question) Blake).
There isn’t a lot of information provided on the descendants of Nicholas Blake and Jone (Question) Blake in this chart. William Blake is known to have married Margaret Sealey and they lived at Minehead. It is thought that they had three sons and three daughters although this chart lists only Thomas, Samuel, Sarah, Susanne and Elizabeth with the other name being William.
In my blog “Will of Mary Anne Blake, spinster, Clifton, Gloucestershire …. probated 24 Apr 1833” http://kippeeb.blogspot.com/2014/05/will-of-mary-anne-blake-spinster.html
mention is made of the possibility of a Nicholas Blake having fathered Mary Anne Blake. I did not at that time link back to this Nicholas Blake and still do not but there is a lot of detail in this blog post on the Blake family in Jamaica.

The above charts/cropped charts are simply a reproduction of material from the Blake Museum. Thank you to the Museum for permitting the republication of their chart to this Blake Newsletter.
2. Blake Surname Study – Progress: One Name Blake Study at the Guild of One-name Studies was originally undertaken by another researcher. In 2011, I became the researcher for the Blake-one-name Study at the Guild. There was already a pre-existing yDNA project run by Bill Bleak and he continues as the main administrator of the project. As can be seen below only 16 members of the study have completed a Big Y (SNPs testing for deep clade determination) making it virtually impossible to do more than has been done with some of the groups.
Project Statistics
Total Members 181
Big Y 16
Combined GEDCOMs Uploaded 12
Paternal Ancestor Information 124
Predicted Y-DNA Haplogroups 23
Y-DNA12 104
Y-DNA25 87
Y-DNA37 84
Y-DNA67 58
Y-DNA111 31
The task of managing these groups is large and I will gradually work away at converting them to the new standard of placing individuals by their deep haplogroup testing. I would recommend that all members join the relevant haplogroup project to learn more about your haplogroup.
That being said, I have begun the task of conversion beginning with what I knew best; namely, my own line tested by my brothers. The I2 lines in the project are ancient to the British Isles probably arriving just as the ice sheets were retreating. More people belonging to the project in these particular lines would be most helpful.
3. Blake autosomal DNA Study at FT DNA (Family Finder)
In some cases these are large matches and in other cases relatively small but that is the way with the inheritance of autosomal DNA. With each generation chunks of autosomal DNA can either be broken into smaller units or passed as a large chunk relatively intact. It is a purely random event. Due to privacy concerns it is not possible to produce a chart of the members who do have matches with other members of the group but each member is able to check that for themselves in their account. What would be helpful is adding a family tree to your account thus making it much more possible to find matching autosomal DNA cousins in your research.
4. Andover, Hampshire, England Parish Registers (Baptisms – set 4)
Andover, Hampshire, England has often been said to be the “home of the Blakes” when I have been writing to people in Hampshire through the years. I would say that Calne, Wiltshire perhaps has a stronger hold on that particular title although there are a number of other areas in England where the Blake family has been for centuries. When I decided to transcribe the Parish Registers of Andover I was surprised to find that yes there are a number of Blake entries but there are far more Blake entries in Parish Registers in other parts of England as mentioned. In this issue, I will publish the baptisms for Blake in the Parish Registers. These records are taken from fiche which have scans of the original parish registers. The registers for baptisms begin in 1588 and have provided me with a lot of details on the Blake family in Andover in the late 1500s and into the 1600s/1700s. Eventually I hope to complete my project of transcribing these Parish Registers for St Marys Andover beyond the early to mid 1700s.
Baptismal Registers commenced in 1588 and I will start publishing these transcriptions for Andover.
