From the time I first discovered Joseph Blake married to Joanne King at Upper Clatford and my 4x great grandparents, I have wondered if my line went back to Penton Mewsey. The mother of Joseph Blake was buried at Penton Mewsey along with her infant son (second child). Thomas, father of Joseph, and Ann Carter his wife were married 28 Sep 1728 at Penton Mewsey although Joseph was baptized at Andover in 1730 as was the infant son Thomas in 1732 and then buried two days later at Penton, his mother was buried on the day of his baptism. But thepath back to Penton Mewsey and the John who left his will in 1619 and the John who left his will in 1611 and the Thomas who left his will in 1597 does not appear to work for my line.
Rather Thomas my 5x great grandfather was the son of Thomas Blake and Mary Spring and baptized at Andover (at least this appears to be the case). Thomas was the son of John and Elizabeth Blake and baptized in 1685 at Andover with John baptized in 1649 at Andover son of William. Indeed there are only two marriages at Penton Mewsey for Blake prior to Thomas and Ann. Both are Peter Blake and the one is from Clatford and married Ann Noyes of Penton Mewsey and the second is of Penton Mewsey and married Ann Godfrey of Upton. There are a number of baptisms there:

I transcribed the parish registers of Penton Mewsey and they appear on the OPC Hampshire website and my website:
http://www.knightroots.co.uk/transcriptions/Parishes_P/Penton_Mewsey/Penton_Mewsey.htm
http://www.kipp-blake-families.ca/elizabethmain.htm
The opportunity to relook at this is too tempting so I shall transcribe the wills of John Blake 1611 and 1619 at Penton Mewsey next along with the 1593 will of John Blake senior of Penton Mewsey.
Blake family at Penton Mewsey from British History online and there is no mention of the Blake family there:

The manor of Penton Mewsey was held by the widow of Sir Walter Stonor and his heir Francis Stonor and sold to Walter Loveden of Fyfield. In 1590 Francis Culpepper died seized of the manor and his son John inherited from him. But no mention of Blake in any of this although John Blake was a freeholder at Penton Mewsey in 1611. I think I will simply reinforce my line going back as mentioned but one should always eliminate the possibilities for the sake of good research!
Hi,
ReplyDeleteI saw your post as I run the current Penton Facebook page. We cover P.Mewsey, P.Grafton, P.Corner and P.Harrow Way villages.
Here is a link - https://www.facebook.com/PentonRondayvoo
Some of the houses are many hundreds of years old and their are some families who can trace their ancestry back to the time of your ancestors.
Feel free to join the page and have a look at the events in the pub, village green, Shop, hall, stables and others
Hope this helps in your search
Ian
Thank you for your comments. It would be exciting to find cousins from so long ago. Elizabeth Kipp
