1. Discussion: Who was John Pincombe who died in 1794/5 at Bishops Nympton?
Of strong interest to me of course, one of the two men who were buried in this time period was my 4x great grandfather. Until I went to the Society of Genealogists (SOG) in London in 2013 I did not know for sure which of the John Pincombe in the records was mine in terms of his death date. His will was destroyed in the bombing of the Record Office at Devon during World War II. It was my good fortune to be a member of the SOG and attending the Who Do you Think You Are Live in London, UK that year. I had checked into the booth to have a look around and asked about a record that they held at their library. The attendant obliging looked it up and said no problem come and see it anytime. We arrived there a day or so after the Conference on the bus and that was a really interesting trip. Usually we took the Underground but this time we decided to ride the bus and see a bit of London from that view. It was worth the time and effort. We stopped at the British Library as I had a document I wanted to see there and my husband wanted to take the tour of that library. We did both. Then we walked to the Society of Genealogists (maybe twenty minutes but they have moved from there now). Quickly into the Reading Room there and documents in hand. They were missing the large Pincombe charts and I must check to see if they ever found them as I could send my copies or ask one of the earlier researchers to send a copy as mine are a copy of a copy and not as good as the original. But I digress; when I arrived I asked for the folder as well as the charts and the folder held a real treat for me. The wait was not a very long one and the rewards in that folder were amazing.

Number 2 sheet held an abstract of the Last Will and Testament of John Pincombe (my 4x great grandfather). Since he was still alive the 14th of June 1794 when his will was dated and the will was probated 7th of May 1795 he died between these two dates. Two John Pincombe were buried at Bishops Nympton one the 9 Aug 1794 and one on the 27 March 1795 (I have fiche of the original parish registers and have transcribed them for all of the Bishops Nympton records up to the mid 1900s). Would one wait ten months to probate the will? I do not think so particularly; you are either going to probate just after death or not going to do probate. There is a small mystery in the precise because he mentions that when his two sons William and Robert are 21 years of age they will inherit rights to West Wood sharely jointly. Robert at the time of the will being written was not 21 years of age (he was baptized 4 Oct 1775) but William was thought to be baptized 21 Dec 1769 which would make him 25 years of age plus his father did name him as executor. I do not see any other William Pincombe baptized at Bishops Nympton in this time period who would be less than 21 years of age in 1794 (indeed the only one is actually older than this William). It does strike me as odd but I am not looking at the original will; just an abstract. All of the wills of the sons of John Pincombe and Mary Charly are available and I have blogged them in the past. By yDNA a descendant of the William Pincombe (my fifth cousin) and a descendant of Robert Pincombe (my third cousin once removed) are a good match. Looking at the properties mentioned is informative and does tend to assist but I am ever mindful that properties passed around in this Pincombe family and they also purchased land from other Pincombe members over time. West Wood, the property mentioned in the will for William and Robert was held by Robert at the time of his death in 1827.
John Pincomb married Mary Charly 8 Nov 1767 at Bishops Nympton. Looking at the last letter and the smudge I rather think that the spelling was Charly for Mary’s surname. I haven’t looked at that for quite a while and I retook the image with my cell phone and the image is much superior to the one that I had on file. Interesting that Mary signed as Mary Pincomb rather than Mary Charly as one would most often find on the wedding registrations. John Pincomb would have been 39 years of age when he married after the death of both of his parents.
John and Mary were both of the parish and married by Banns. Both signed the registration with the witness being an individual who often signed the register. John Pincombe’s parents were deceased and thought to be John Pincombe and Grace Manning who married at Bishops Nympton 20 Mar 1725. They were buried at Bishops Nympton John 11 Apr 1759 and Grace 27 Jul 1764 also at Bishops Nympton. They had three children baptized at Bishops Nympton William (baptized 20 Jun 1727), John (baptized 13 Jan 1728) and Grace (baptized 7 Mar 1732). Grace married John Butcher 31 Mar 1755 at Bishops Nympton and was buried 16 Jun 1763 about six months after her fourth child (a son, John Pincombe Butcher passed away as an infant). William the eldest married Grace Smyth 13 Jun 1758 at North Molton and their only child was a son William baptized 31 May 1759 and buried 26 Dec 1780 at Bishops Nympton. Dates are recorded as old style with January, February, March (to Lady’s Day) following December and retaining the year (i.e.) William and John were a year and a half apart.
Having transcribed the entire set of parish registers for Bishops Nympton I am confident saying that this John Pincombe likely follows the descent mentioned above particularly because of the property mentioned in the precise of his will.
The Freeholders Index for Devon (http://www.foda.org.uk/freeholders/index/namesindex.htm) does show a John Pincombe as a copyholder at Bishops Nympton in 1741 and in 1751 and a William Pincombe yeoman also at Bishops Nympton in 1762 (in 1783 this William was buried at Bishops Nympton). In 1783 a John Pincombe is listed as yeoman, copyholder at Bishops Nympton (replacing his brother William who is deceased). In 1799 William Pincomb is listed at Bishops Nympton. In 1799 John Pincombe is listed at Molland. John Pincombe was the eldest son of John Pincombe and Mary Charly and was known to have lived principally at Molland and the properties which he held there are listed in his will. Although the eldest, it was his younger brother William who was executor of the estate and we do find William at Bishops Nympton in 1799. Robert (my 3x great grandfather) Pincombe is not listed in 1799 (he would have then been 24 years of age but had not yet received West Wood it might appear; he does hold it later with East Wood and Park). The properties appear to fit with this line of descent as well.
There is some new material in this compared to my blog posts. Certainly it is only today that I feel that the spelling of Mary’s surname has been misinterpreted with my newer camera picking up the Charly much more clearly rather than Charlie which has been the usual transcription of that particular marriage registration.
The next issue will look at John Pincomb married to Grace Manning and who was he? What do we know about that John Pincomb?
