I have to say that the Prime Minister and his Cabinet (because you can sense that the members of his cabinet are very serious about their individual profiles) have done a great job especially through COVID. On a world level they all do a great job for Canada especially they show the advantage of having a male-female cabinet that is powerful because the world undergoes the greatest advancement when men and women work together on projects. For his ten years in power the Prime Minister dealing especially with the countries in the Western Hemisphere has shown his great ability at handling difficult situations. He always stands up for Canada and does not let any bully trample on the rights of Canadians in their own country. On his right hand, the deputy Prime Minister/Minister of Finance has proven to be an absolute compliment/partner for the Prime Minister as they both strive to make Canada an effective working sovereign state in all the different relationships that we have around the world. Canada has never invaded another country for greed or wanton gain; we love peace but we are also willing to fight to keep it - two World Wars have shown that and it was our Lester B Pearson who created the UN Emergency Force now the UN Peacekeepers in 1956 for the Suez Crisis. He too was a great Liberal Prime Minister. I think that the present Prime Minister has also proven himself to be part of this great club of great Liberal Prime Ministers. One must always give due where due is earned even if I am a Progressive Conservative at heart. As the Progressive Conservatives in this country pull together and set us on a path of a Progressive Conservative party that truly respects the great Prime Ministers in our party in the past like Brian Mulroney and brings their great aims to the political table we too will give this country a great government when our time comes. For the moment the present Prime Minister will continue getting my vote. Going to Alberta during this dreadful time of forest fires to reiterate federal support for the province, he continues to prove himself a credit to Canadians because he knows that Albertans in general are Conservative voters so taking the time to be there for them on his way to a summit in Seoul he earns bonus points in my mind. He doesn't just send a member of cabinet to do that.
The biggest mistake of Prime Minister Harper was reducing the GST to 5% as that was consistent government funding and most importantly funding for the military. Prime Minister Harper, following the logic of an economist, continued to try to balance the budget (and protect the oil industry) by destroying and trying to destroy our national libraries. An economist for sure but they lack long term wisdom seeing only the political gain of a 2% reduction in a tax disliked by most and ignored by the rich as they can afford to pay it. So if you want to tax the rich as I have always said then increase the GST to 7% or 10% and the tax on all luxury items to 40%. Prime Minister Harper came in with a promise to support the military and he did not; he failed completely in that regard. If people so want to tax the rich that is one way to do so as said and increase the taxes on luxury items; if people want them they will pay no matter the cost. There is no guarantee with this present Conservative Party that they are willing to do what needs to be done. All they do is attack the Prime Minister over frivolities and items that really do not affect the running of the country. I myself have lived through good times, bankruptcy and recovery as a child which is not an easy time for sure but life flows and moves along its own path. Some of my best memories are from those times actually. Nothing like stress to draw a family closer - COVID showed us that as well.
Up to 706 entries now in the Pencombe-Pincombe-Pinkham database and will continue that project hoping to complete it early next week. I will then work with the entries for the 1500s. One thought that has come to my mind lately is the lines in the 1500s that I can not connect back to John Pencombe - perhaps they are related to him and have come from Herefordshire. I mustn't discount that idea either. Philip Pynkeham at Tawstock is an interesting person on the 1544 Subsidy. The name Philip perhaps unusual in this family but he could be a younger son of another Pencombe family with the forename of his mother's side. One must keep thinking about possibilities as the work progresses. If I can not link him to the existing three sons' descendants then that is a good possibility especially as I am still finding Pencombe in Herefordshire in the 1600s.
Onward to the day, need chicken fencing (to keep the rabbits out!), garden paper bags, bedding plants today and a grocery pickup. The summer awaits and the work schedule shifts from inside to outside.
On to breakfast and another great day. It is just 1 degree celsius out there and we have had a little rain; need more.
