1. Pincombe Charts, original One-Name Study at the Guild of One-Name Studies
These Pincombe Charts were created by the two researchers in the original One-name-study at the Guild of one-name-studies. I reprint them with the thought in mind that others could add to the knowledge of these charts. I have reworked some of them and will publish that information when complete. I am publishing Chart 12 - Exeter-Littleham-Exmouth. This is another Chart that I have not worked on at all. Any comments, corrections, additions much appreciated. I am looking forward now to updating this information to pass on to another researcher.
I have been working on the Pincombe family for twelve years now. My accomplishments seem rather low but on the other hand I have brought together all of my line and corrected the original research attaching my line to the correct line (my John Pincombe was the son of Robert Pincombe and Elizabeth Rowcliffe). That at least lets people know that they are either related to this line at Bishops Nympton or not as I have pretty much assigned most of the Pincombe information in the parish registers of Bishops Nympton to my lines at least down to the mid 1800s.
Only one individual has been mentioned in the top left hand corner as having contributed to this chart. I note that Maud Anne (born 7 Jul 1898) married William Clarence Suter and that Mary Anne died 14 Dec 1967. She was the daughter of Thomas Beavis and Rosa Lily Whittle (maiden name Parsons). Thomas appears to trace back to the marriage of Eliza [Jane] Pincombe and Thomas John Beavis (Family Search: 10 Feb 1851, Withycombe Raleigh with Exmouth, All Saints). Four children are noted on the chart for this couple and using Find My Past in the census of 1881, Thomas J Beavis is listed as a widower (born 1828 at Exmouth, Devon) and Master Mariner with children Hannah b 1852 Exmouth, William H born 1854 Exmouth, Eliza b 1857 Exmouth and Edna M b 1869 Exmouth. On census between 1851 and 1881, Thomas Beavis is at sea or in ports abroad. Fortunately Eliza Jane appears on the 1871 census with the following children: Eliza b 1857, Thomas b 1859, Edward b 1862, Ernest A b 1863 and Edna M b 1869 (all born in Devon, birth place not specified). Thomas Beavis married Rose Lily Whittle Sep quarter 1895 at Barnet, MDX. Children baptized to this couple (using maiden name as Parsons) from the GRO (UK) Index: Thomas b Jun quarter 1896 Edmonton RD, Maud Anne b Sep Quarter 1898 Edmonton RD, Edward b Jun quarter 1901 Edmonton RD. No other children were located at this time. William C Suter and Maud Anne Beavis were married Dec quarter 1926 at Barnet MDX.
Eliza Jane Pincombe was the daughter of Thomas Pincombe (1788-1860) and Agnes Hayman (1791-1872) according to Chart 12. The census of 1841 at Littleham lists Thomas Pincombe (50, b 1791), Agness Pincombe (50, b 1791), Mary Ann Pincombe (20, b 1821), Eliza Pincombe (15, b 1826), Louisa Pincombe (12, b 1829) and Matilda Pincombe (6, b 1835). As the earliest nominal census, this is the best we can do looking at census for this family at this time although could check later census for other family members missing in this report. A Thomas Pincombe was baptized 25 Oct 1789 at Littleham near Exmouth son of Simon Pincombe and Ann. Looking at Chart 12, Simon is listed as the father of this Thomas b c 1747 and married three times m 1772 to Mary Carnell, m 1787 to Ann Dowell and m 1796 to Elizabeth Wing. There was a Thomas Pincombe buried at Littleham 26 Aug 1795 with no further information. There was a baptism of a Thomas Pincombe 4 Dec 1791 at North Lew son of Thomas and Margaret Pincombe. This Thomas does appear on Chart 16 in the family of Thomas and Margaret Pincombe. At this point, in time I will suggest that the Thomas Pincombe who died was perhaps not a child but would need to be proven. Thomas Pincombe married Agness Hayman 31 May 1811 at Littleham. The older children of Thomas and Agness Pincombe births/baptisms at Littleham (near Exmouth): Hannah Hayman Pincombe baptized 21 Jun 1212, Caroline Pincombe born 21 Aug 1814, Richard Hayman Pincombe born 29 Sep 1816, Mary Ann Pincombe born 24 Jan 1819, Thomas Charles Pincombe born 28 Oct 1820 (at some point, it would appear, Charles became Giles as a second name). I did not find the baptisms for the remainder of the children but they are on the census of 1841.
Moving back to Simon Pincombe named as the father of Thomas Pincombe on Chart 12 and he is said to be b c 1747 son of Simon Pincombe and Sarah Agland. This couple lived at Littleham according to Chart 12. Using Find My Past, there was a marriage at Littleham 23 Nov 1747 between Simon Pinkham and Sarah Agland. The baptism of Simon Pinkham 9 Mar 1747 at Littleham son of Simon Pinkham. There are original images for these two entries. Continuing to look at these entries for a Simon Pinkham search there was a birth for a Simon Pinkham 12 Mar 1824 at Littleham son of Thomas and Agnes Pinkham (Simon, infant, buried 19 Feb 1826 at Littleham). As one can see the surnames Pinkham and Pincombe were, on occasion, used interchangeably. Simon (married to Sarah Agland) was said to be born/baptized 1724. I did not find any information on Find My Past, Ancestry, Family Search or My Heritage for this Simon’s birth/baptism in 1724.
When I visited the Society of Genealogists Library in London, UK, one of their holdings was an envelope of abstracts including a list of wills in the Exeter Diocese from 1540 to (in this case 1819). It included a reference to 1701, Simon P. and Exeter A (Administration). Unfortunately this particular item was lost in the bombing of the Exeter Record Office during WW II. Noted near the top of the chart is a Simon Pincombe d 1701. This material was deposited at the Society of Genealogists by the earlier researchers. The spelling of the last name I can not be sure of as the document has only Simon P. It could be Pincombe or Pinkham.

These tables represent many years of work at the record offices by the two original Pincombe-Pinkham family researchers and Richard Pinkham was a physician and able to make contact with some of the Pincombe families living in Devon. The names seen on these charts usually in the top corners are individuals who provided information for that particular chart. In the case of charts from the United States, Galen Pinkham has contributed a great deal of information to the descendants of the Pincombe/Pinkham family and this information can be found on the charts which he produced. I do remind other researchers that there are discrepancies in these charts and I would appreciate knowing of any that you may find so that eventually a corrected chart will be published.

An interesting will and I note a Pincombe line has been at Bishops Nympton since the latter part of the 1500s. The Testator, William Pincombe, refers to his uncle Thomas Pincombe, his brother John Pincombe, John Pincombe of Bishops Nympton and William Pincombe of Filleigh. I am somewhat believing that John Pincombe at Bishops Nympton is the son of Richard Pincombe and Francis Gill (his second wife). William Pincombe at Filleigh may be a first cousin to John at Bishops Nympton.
The Thomas Pincombe who lived at East Buckland and Filleigh and left his will dated 1544 (lost in the bombing of the Exeter Record Office in WW II) was married to Johane (unknown) Pencombe and her will was probated by the PCC 30 Oct 1590 but written 7 May 1563 so still extant. Her sons were William, John and Richard. Her daughters were married to John Locke and John Jasse.
Preparing this Newsletter, I decided to do a scan of the Tax lists from the mid 1500s in the area around North and South Molton. I have done this just using the index and going to the specific pages but felt it might be worthwhile to scan the 30 or so pages in this area of North and South Molton.

I did not locate any new records but did discover some family lines of my own that married into my Pincombe family so was an interesting foray.
Creating a family tree for these earliest Pincombe/Pinkham families in Devon has always been one of my objectives. Generation one is said to be “Pynecombe of Northmolton came thither with the Lord Zouch about the beginning of the reigne of King Henry 7th (Visitation of Devon 1620 with additions, Harl. MS 1163, folio 95, not signed).” This particular quoted passage is from The Visitation of Devon 1564 contained in Harl. MS 1080, folio 64b.
Looking at the Visitation of Devon 1564 edited by Frederic Thomas Colby in 1881 I have not yet located any information on the Pincombe/Pinkham family. I have not seen the Harl. MS 1080 folio 64b mentioned in the Visitation of Devon 1620 (image above).
If the Pynecombe/Pencombe who accompanied Lord de la Zouch in 1485 to North Molton was a young man/teenaged boy then one could surmise that Thomas at East Buckland and Filleigh, John at South Molton and William at North Molton were his sons. The above chart has a second John at North Molton. Who is Alice, widow, at North Molton? Was she the wife of the Pencombe/Pynecombe/Pincombe who accompanied Lord de la Zouch to North Molton?
This 1637 will of William Pincombe is quite interesting. He does not give a relationship for the John Pincombe at Bishops Nympton or the William Pincombe at Filleigh. These two individuals likely belong to Richard Pincombe son of Thomas Pincombe and Johane (unknown) Pincombe of East Buckland and Filleigh. Richard was the fourth son so not likely to inherit the property at East Buckland or Filleigh. The Thomas Pincombe, uncle to the testator, and John Pincombe brother to the testator I have not yet solved but the solution always seems somewhat tantalizing and within reach.
3. yDNA testing for Pinkham descendants
One of the members of the yDNA study has purchased two kits which he is willing to donate to a male candidate who has a paper trail going back four generations. I think that finding a Pinkham descendant would be the best candidate but will leave that up to the purchaser. Please contact the editor (kippeeb@rogers.com) for more details.
