1. Discussion: Who was John Pincombe the elder who died in 1604?
The last newsletter was primarily a transcription of records that were produced at the time of the death of John Pincombe the elder of South Molton who died the 18th November 1604. This issue of the newsletter will try to place this John Pincombe into the line of descent from the first Pyncombe who arrived at North Molton in 1485 with Lord Zouch.
This John Pincombe was married twice perhaps as he has adult children with children and the youngest grandchild mentioned turned 20 in 1612 (she is named his executrix Susanna Webber and born circa 1592). His son is still under 21 when the will is written and he is 20 years 2 months and 13 days when his father died on the 18th November 1604 so John Pincombe junior was born circa 1584-5).
The Visitation of Devon 1620 does not provide dates for John Pincombe at South Molton until 1620 with a John Pincombe of South Molton, Barrister of the Middle Temple living in 1620 and died before 1657. He was married to Mary daughter of Sir John Carew of Crowcombe. John Pincombe is listed in the Oxford University Alumni at Exeter College matriculation 13 July 1604 aged 18 and being of Poughill, Devon, barrister at law, Middle Temple, 1616 and is the son and heir of John Pincombe of South Molton. He has a son Richard (1655 [his date of subscription at Wadham College, Oxford, these records are on Ancestry]). Year of birth 1584-1585 according to these two records for John Pincombe the younger. John the elder does not mention that John is married or has children and online trees give a year of birth for Mary Carew of 1601. The visitation lists three daughters and one son for John Pincombe married to Mary Carew. The son Richard is listed as deceased with his Will written 19 Nov 1656 and probated 10 Apr 1658 (this version of the Visitation is listed as 1620 with updates).
The Extent of land record listed the mother of John Pincombe the younger as Anne Pincombe but the Visitation has John Pincombe marrying Amy the daughter of Richard Dodridge of Barnstaple and mother of this John. This John is preceded by a father John Pincombe and a grandfather John Pyncombe taking him back as a son of the first Pyncombe at North Molton with Lord Zouch in 1485. Thinking thirty years to a generation then John the younger was born circa 1584-5; his father perhaps early to mid 1550s, his father perhaps early to mid 1520s and his father perhaps early to mid 1490s which does work rather well. The parish registers at South Molton do not begin until 1601 so no assistance there (the Bishop’s transcripts in 1602).

The Tax Subsidy rolls of 1524/1525 include Christopher Pyncombe at South Molton, Thomas Pencombe, John Pencombe and William Pencombe all at North Molton with Thomas Pyncome also at East Buckland and these individuals appear to be either siblings or first cousins according to the visitation with their parent/grandparent being the Pyncombe who came to North Molton in 1485 with Lord Zouch. As mentioned, Thomas Pencombe is at North Molton and East Buckland and by the time of his death he is also at Filleigh (perhaps he had devested himself of Filleigh between the will and lay subsidy tax time) according to his will (lost in the bombing of the Exeter Record Office during WWII) in 1544. I think he may have died in his 40s-50s as his widow left her will in 1563 but she only mentions East Buckland as her abode. Thomas according to the Visitation and the Charts produced by the earlier researchers was a son of the Pyncombe who came to North Molton in 1485 as was John and the charts either have no forename or a second John but I wonder if his name was William actually. No idea who the Philip Pynkeham is at Tawstock (about 28 km from North Molton and south of Barnstaple).
Have I learned anything more about John Pincombe who left his will in 1604? Looking at Chart1-2 for North Molton that John Pincombe is said to be born circa 1575 and married to Amy Dodridge. From the Extent of Land document we know that the son was born circa 1584 so the 1575 is incorrect. On the 1620 Devon visitation John Pincombe the elder’s father is listed as John and on Chart 1-2 as Richard. There isn’t a Richard at South Molton on the Tax Subsidy but there is one at Kings Nympton interestingly enough in 1545. There is a John and a Christopher Pyncome at South Molton in 1545 (and Christopher is also there in 1524). The Visitation shows three sons although two are named John which I suspect is an error (perhaps one is a William) with Christopher being a son of one of the John and John being a son of the other John. There are three Pincombe men at North Molton in the 1520s – Thomas, William and John. There is one Pincombe male at East Buckland – Thomas and one at South Molton - Christopher. Although I do not know of any legal evidence to prove the point I suspect that these four men are all over 21 years of age. I like the Visitation because they were written down at the time of the event and often signed by one of the members of the family.
William Pincombe married to Emote Snow leaves a will dated 20 Dec 1602 which is probated 13 July 1605. He names his seven sons and two daughters in his will. He names a number of grandchildren so he is elderly but not likely born in 1501 as shown on Chart 1-2. I do not think he is the William Pencombe at North Molton in the 1520s. William’s father Thomas died in 1544 so he was born by then with his mother leaving her will dated 7 May 1563 where she mentions sons and grandchildren but William is unmarried at that time. Definitely born by 1544 but not having the will of Thomas does limit the ability to assign a birth time to William other than by 1544 and unmarried in 1563 although by 1602 he names seven sons and two daughters and grandchildren. I think this does help a little as William is said to be a contemporary to the father of the John Pincombe the elder at South Molton that our article has been attempting to place into a time period. Knowing that John Pincombe the elder has children with adult children certainly puts his year of birth before the 1575 suggested in Chart 1-2. The youngest child in his family is his son John Pincombe known to be born in 1584-5. John Pincombe the elder’s father is a contemporary of Thomas Pencombe’s children including William Pincombe who left his will in 1602 and we know he was born by 1544 but the father of John Pincombe the elder of South Molton appears by the visitation to be older than Thomas so his children could be older and Christopher Pyncombe who is a cousin to John the father of John Pincombe the elder is likely of age in 1524 so perhaps born by 1503 at least giving a possible range in age to John Pincombe father of John Pincombe the elder of South Molton of 1500 to 1515 and his son, person of interest, could have a range 1525 to 1540 with his youngest child John Pincombe the younger of South Molton being born 1584-85 when his father was 40 to 60 years of age and he would then have been between 79 and 95 when he died.

6 soule unto Allmightie God. And my bodie to be buried within the Churche or Churchyard

A somewhat fascinating look at the records and trying to assemble those first generations in the Pincombe family of North Molton. The reader will have to decide how successful this recitation of the know information is with the conjectured ideas.
