William married Mary Terrell on 23 Feb 1692 in Selworthy, Somerset, England[10]. Mrs. Mary Siderfin was buried on 12 Mar 1746 in Minehead, Somerset, England[11].
William Siderfin, of Minehead, Somerset, gent. Will dated March, 1716. Proved 17th Decr. 1723 (Taunton Registry). My niece Rachael Clothier (?)£50. Residue to Mary my Wife. Exix. Sealed with 3 cups. Mentions the Quirckes of Minehead.[12]
Mary Siderfin, Minehead, widow of William Siderfin, no mention of children or lands, dated 18th June, 1746, sealed (3 cups).[13]
A baptism can not be located for William Siderfin circa 1660 but he did live at Minehead. His father (James Sanders has John 5 (Robert 4, Robert 3, William 2, John 1) I postulate Robert 5 (William 4, Robert 3, William 2, John 1) simply because this Robert 5 was traditionally at Timberscombe and William is referred to in a deed as the son of Robert 5 (William 4, Robert 3, William 2, John 1). Later William is mentioned in the same set of deeds as married to Mary and living at Minehead[14].
A deed from 1698 provided further proof for William Siderfin as the son of Robert Siderfin of East Lynch.[15]
This will abstract does establish cousinship between the Siderfin and Quirch families[16]: Richard Blackford, of Dunster, Somerset (one of the King's Masters Extraordinary in the Court of Chancery.) Will dated Jan. 8th 1688 - Proved April 4th, 1689. Mentions my cousin Robert Siderfin - my cousin John Quirch.[17]

45. John 7 Siderfin (John 6, Robert 5, William 4, Robert 3, William 2, John 1) was baptized 15 Jul 1656 in Wootton Courtney, Somerset, England [21].
I discovered that the first Siderfin entry in the Wootton Courtenay parish records was John 8 Siderfin son of John 7 baptized 15 Jul 1656[22] (no entries prior to that date for Siderfin in baptisms and these registers commenced in 1558[23]). I continue with my suspicion that this John 7 baptized at Wootton Courtenay in 1656 was actually the son of John 6 (Robert 5, William 4, Robert 3, William 2, John 1) and not the son of Robert 4, Robert 3, William 2, John 1[24].
John Siderfin Junior of Wootton Courtenay Farmer married Mary Chapman of Wootton Courtney at West Monkton 27 Mar 1683 (Banns read). The license is signed by John Siderfin, Robert Siderfin and George Chapman[25]. The John Siderfin marrying Mary Chapman and baptized 1656[26] would be John Junior then as his father was John 6 (Robert 5, William 4, Robert 3, William 2, John 1). A copy of the Marriage Contract is available on Ancestry[27]. This is the proof that Robert Siderfin signing the contract is Robert Siderfin of Timberscome with John Siderfin junior being the son of John 6 Siderfin (Robert 5, William 4, Robert 3, William 2, John 1) and Robert is likely his uncle as he lived until 1688.

Why they marry at West Monkton is perhaps a mystery as it is 53 kilometres from Selworthy. John Siderfin’s and Mary (Chapman) Siderfin’s son Robert was baptized 15 Dec 1688 at Selworthy[28]. No other baptisms were located for this couple although I do wonder if a thorough review of West Monkton might reveal a John Siderfin baptized there very close to the date of the marriage. The information available on James Sanders Pedigree Chart includes a John b 1656 and Mary b 1648 and Mary died 1717[29].

In the line at the bottom of James Sanders’ Pedigree chart above under John – Mary (see red box) there are three individuals listed. Robert Siderfin b c 1689 and married to Joanna Kittener 25 Apr 1713[30] at Wootton Courtney (he is of East Lynch and Joanna is of Wotton Courtney), next to him on the same line a John Siderfin married to Maria Winter and third on the line is a Walter Siderfin b c 1692 said to be of Timberscombe married to Alice Quirke of Minehead 25 Jan 1717[31] at Luxborough[32]. One error here is obvious (the John Siderfin of Wotton Courtney and the John Siderfin married to Mary are both b 1656 so the same person). Another error in the chart as I believe I have shown that this is the son of John 7 (John 6, Robert 5, William 4, Robert 3, William 2, John 1). We will return to Robert Siderfin b c 1689 and Walter Siderfin b c 1692 later.

Robert 5 (Robert 4, Robert 3, William 2, John 1) is at Minehead (since there isn’t a Robert at Wootton Courtney it is tempting to think that Robert 5 has survived (and he lived at Minehead) although Robert 4 was still alive in 1653), Robert 5 (William 4, Robert 3, William 2, John 1) at Timberscombe, William 5 (William 4, Robert 3, William 2, John 1) at Luxborough, and Thomas 4 (Robert 3, William 2, John 1) at Luxborough. This particular tax was said to be applied during the reign of Charles II. It does account for one of the living sons of Robert 3[35] – Thomas 4 at Luxborough, William 4’s sons Robert 5 and William 5 were at Timberscombe and Luxborough respectively. Robert 4 was at Knowle in 1653 and likely there in 1662 if still living but did not appear on this Benevolence Chart produced by James Sanders.
It is unfortunate that James Sanders does omit the grandchildren mentioned by Christian (Webber) Siderfin widow of William 4 (Robert 3, William 2, John 1) in his chart and writeup. He used only an abstract of Christian’s will[36].

The records indicate that John married Maria Winter on 8 Dec 1718 in Exton, Somerset, England[39]. Maria was born 1676, died aged 57[40], and was buried on 4 Apr 1733 in Exton, Somerset, England[41].
Will Abstract: Mary Siderfin, of Exton, wife of John Siderfin, of the same parish, tanner. Whereas before my intermarriage with my said husband by my Deed indented and bearing date the 8th Dec., 1718, I did assign and settover certain leasehold tenements or estates, ietc., unto Edmund Cording, of Exton, and George Langdon, of Winsford, in trust for the several uses, ends, intents, etc., therein mentioned. I give etc., unto my husband's granddaughter, Joane Siderfin, ten pounds. To my cozen, Anne Hobbs, the younger, of Winsford, 40s. To Edward Barnes, the younger of Exton, 10s. All the rest residue and remainder of my said leasehold tenements or estates and all other goods, etc., etc., unto Edmund Cording, the younger (son of aforesaid Ed Cording) to and for his own proper use for ever. And I do make him, the said Ed Cording the ye sole Executor. Will dated 7th January, 1729.[42]
Mary, in the will abstract above, mentions that her husband has a granddaughter Joane. At Wootton Courtney there are two baptisms for parents John Siderfin junior and Joan (unknown) [43]. These two children belong to John 8 (John 7, John 6, Robert 5, William 4, Robert 3, William 2, John 1) whose existence in the Wootton Courtney Parish Registers and the mention in the will of his step mother have resulted in his being added as a child of John 7 (John 6, Robert 5, William 4, Robert 3, William 2, John 1). I postulate that John 6 Siderfin married to Mary Chapman had an older son named John (John and Mary were married in 1683 and Robert was born in 1688) who married and had two daughters (mother Joan) although no further record is found for this John except for the mention of his daughter in his step-mother’s will.
46. Christian Worth was born circa 1682/83 or before 19 Nov 1689[44]. She was under 21 years of age in 1689. Christian married John Bradford 20 Feb 1706 at Luccombe or Luckham[45], Somerset.
47. Susanna Worth was born before 1689[46]. Susanna married Robert Cutcliffe 12 Jan 1713 in Luccombe or Luckham[47].

52. Cecilia Worth was born in 1701 with the Somerset Baptismal Index listing Cecilia Worth baptized 25 Sep 1701 at Luccombe or Luckham daughter of John Worth (mother not listed). There is a record of a Cecilia Worth buried 18 Oct 1701 at Luccombe or Luckham daughter of John Worth.[53]

Augustine married Mary Davies on 29 Sep 1720 in Cutcombe, Somerset, England[67].
In the Cutcombe Parish there is a notation that Augustine Siderfin was the Parish Clerk 29 Sep 1724[68]. In his will Augustine mentions that he was a School Teacher[69]. This is a set of wills on pages 43-44 of James Sanders original book that have not been abstracted by the Reverend Frederick Brown so one is left to assume he had access to the wills but did not submit them to be part of his Research Fonds in the Devon Record Office. Included in the will set is the will of Thomasine Siderfin, widow. Interesting looking at this as the will is mentioned a couple of times for Thomasine but it would appear that for reasons of his own James Sanders did not include some of the wills in the Research Fonds or perhaps the Fonds has not included every item in the recitation, just a thought I have had. I believe I will leave a thorough look at the Fonds to someone much closer to the Record Office in Devon than I am![70] Another reason for choosing a Creative Commons License as work can begin very soon on a revision of my own text if deemed necessary and I have no complaint with that.
Will Abstract of Augustine Siderfin[71]“1762. Augustine Siderfin, of Selworthy, School Master. Mentions son, Robert, daughter in law Grace Siderfin. To son John all his right title, interest, property, claim, term of years, etc., to one estate called Lower Knowle, in Tivington, in Selworthy, during his life, but in case son John shall die before son Robert, then estate called Lower Knowle to granddaughter, Mary Siderfin, daughter of son John. Will dated 13th January, 1760.”

A few items from James Sanders Book which refer to the Darch family follow[92]. “This Robert Darch, a Presbyterian minister at Bishop's Hull, near Taunton, was the second of four brothers, nephews of Robert 5 Siderfin (Thomas 4, Robert 3, William 2, John 1). His eldest brother, Thomas 5 (Thomas 4, Robert 3, William 2, John 1) lived and owned land in Luxborough, where Robert Darch died in August, 1734. There is an inscription on the floor of Luxborough Church recording his death and that of his widow, Sarah, who is described as "a father to the poor and eminent for the practice of virtue and true religion." Two other brothers, James and Philip, the latter of whom seems to have been also a Presbyterian minister, are referred to as 'my nephews' in Siderfin's will and given legacies of £100 each. The Darch family had long been resident in Luxborough; in 1598 a James Darch of Luxborough, was joint plaintiff in a lawsuit concerning Exmoor with Thomas Webber, the deputy forester.[93]
“After Siderfin's death his interest in Exmoor Forest (See Appendix 5), probably by some arrangement among the creditors, became divided between two persons, the principal of whom was this Robert Darch. In the rental of the crown lands compiled in 1734 the tenants of Exmoor Forest are named as "Robert Darch and another" and from the fact that Darch purchased the tithes from the Cressets in 1723 we may infer with tolerable certainty that he was then in possession of an interest in the Forest itself. 'Another' was presumably the John Hill who 'passed and allowed' before two witnesses, the accounts of the deputy forester, which were furnished to Darch's widow and son in 1737 and 1743 respectively. Very likely he was a grandson of Boevey's deputy forester who lived at Newland in Withpool in 1678. A third John Hill appears as owner of Newland and Higher Lanacre in 1819. From the terms of Darch's will, combined with the absence from these accounts of any rent for Simonsbath Farm, it seems that this belonged solely to Darch, and that Hill had a half share in the forest only, exclusive of the farm. However this may have been, Darch had the predominant interest as sole owner of the tithes besides his share of the forest.[94]
“Darch died on the 31st January, 1737. Among the pamphlets enumerated in Mr. E. Green's Bibliotheca Somersenensis appear the following: "Grove, Henry .... A funeral sermon occasioned by the death of the late reverend Mr. Robert Darch, of Hill Bishops, in the County of Somerset, who departed this life Jan. 31st, 1737, aetat 65." From another entry in the same work we gather that at the funeral of Robert Siderfin's third wife, Darch himself had entertained the mourners with a discourse considered worthy of printing: "Darch, Robert (Hill-bishops). A sermon preach'd at the funeral of Mrs. Anne, the wife of Robert 5 Siderfin, Esq., (Thomas 4, Robert 3, William 2, John 1) one of her Majesties justices of the peace for the County of Somerset, at Timberscombe, May 13th, 1708." [95]

An interesting discovery given that there were only two John Siderfins that could have been the father of this John (John 5 Siderfin baptized in 1619 at Minehead (Robert 4, Robert 3, William 2, John 1) who would have been 46 years of age (doable but somewhat suspect as that John was known to be at Selworthy) and John (younger son of Robert 5 (William 4, Robert 3, William 2, John 1) likely born circa 1630s

[32] The information that has been verified in the registers by me are so footnoted. The other dates are from James Sanders’ book: History of the Siderfin Family of West Somerset
[33] Palatinate Benevolence 1662 and I could not locate this in the House of Lords Journal which is online. There is a reference to 1622. However the names could correspond to this interval of time (ie. 1660s). In 1622 the reference also works as Robert 3 was still alive and at Luxborough. His three sons were also all living with Robert 4 at Minehead, William 4 at Luxborough and Thomas 4 at Luxborough.
