National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

The first National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is today here in Canada. The day honours the lost children and survivors of residential schools, their families and communities. Public commemoration of the tragic and painful history and ongoing impacts of residential schools is a vital component of the reconciliation process.

For me it is the knowledge that life did not change for these children through that entire residential school period. They were forced to go to a school away from home; boarded for 24 hours a day and there wasn't a loving mother to tuck them into bed at night and siblings were not permitted to be together if they wanted to be. The rules of the school room extended to the 24 hour period and that was just not right. Children need love not a ripping away of their culture and family. That that continued in Canada long after the strap and smacking was banned in the school room in Canada is a painful reminder that life for those children was so unfair and wrong.

Today on this day we need to remember all of those children who were lost attending residential schools and all of those who survived the residential school system.

Will of Jone Blake of Enham, Hampshire - Family Search, Film 186682, A-377, Page 163, dated 23 Mar 1527/1528

Jone Blake, a widow, left her will dated the 23rd Mar 1527 which was just near the end of 1527 as Ladys Day 25 Mar would start the year 1528 under the Julian Calendar. Hence the double dating system in use in our time to remind us that we would now consider the 23 Mar 1527 to be 1528. I tend to just think Old Style and New Style but must be more exact when typing on a page that could be seen around the world!

Jone identifies her children as Nycolas, Robert and Elsabet (now Mylne). She identifies her place of living as Enham by the references within the will. This will helps to identify Nicholas Blake as her son who died in 1547 leaving his will identifying his place of abode as Old Hall, Enham.

The first transcription that I saw for this will was done by someone else. I have since found the will at the Family History Library and transcribed it and basically it is the same as already transcribed with a few changes none of which alter any of the family details already mentioned. This will is written before Henry VIII established himself as Head of the Church of England severing the close ties with the Church in Rome hence the references to the Mass, Lady Saint Mary and the Augustine Friars although all of these catholic reflections continue in the Anglican Church in which I was raised.

Blake newsletter is completed

I will publish the Blake Newsletter on the 1st of October (hopefully I do not forget!). I like the article on Nicholas and the next issue will have an article on William his eldest son. I am hoping that other Blake researchers might consider submitting an article on one of their Blake members as I think that getting the information out helps our project of looking at Blake worldwide more feasible.

Nothing new on the submarine issue but I am hoping that some of the MPs pick up the mantle on this and push for this purchase in a reasonable time frame for our military. It is just so important for our country to be able to supply all of our coastline with the kind of service that our military is well known to be able to do.

Working on emails today. There are just 80 in my inbox. I will probably still have 40 or more when I have been through them all because some I will keep until Income Tax is done next March. I like to keep some of them front and center. Having done the Income Tax for our family for 55 years I really should be very relaxed about it all but I have never done an income tax for a deceased person. I have all sorts of questions on that really. But I suspect they will all get answered as I work my way through it.

Next newsletter to prepare is for H11 and it is one of the short ones of the year as I only do a full update in the first issue of each new volume. A number of people have joined in the past few months but I have not yet assigned them. I will perhaps try to go in and do that in the next few days. I wonder if there will be an update to the Phylogenetic Tree prepared by Dr Van Oven.

Cloudy today and cooler; just ten degrees celsius at 9:00 a.m. Definitely into Fall and yard cleanup time. Will get started at that in another week.

The Arctic is important to Canada

The Arctic is so very important to Canada. It is part of our national heritage; it is who we are this great piece of land stretching from the 41st parallel at Point Pelee all the way to the North Pole. In my lifetime I have been at the very tip of Point Pelee and as far north as the mouth of James Bay. One of these days I hope to make the Northwest Passage. It is one of my dream trips although not one that Edward really wanted to go on particularly. He thought it would just be very cold and it may well be but I would like to take it one of these days. I actually got tired of going to Europe but each trip made Edward all the more desirous of going there. He loved to explore new places except for the very cold ones! Although he was looking at going to the Galapagos Islands on our next excursion to the south. I would have also enjoyed that but will not likely do that one as it isn't very high on my priority list. We tended to have Edward's priority list and then my thoughts on where I might like to go and we did Edward's priority list which was also fun. I did love each trip that we took but found all the food too much. I love looking around though. When we had meals on our own we would often pick up at a local place and go walking with the food in our hands. I think we actually looked like locals when we did that!

But back to the Arctic as it is high on my agenda of care at the moment. We really do need our submarines. Why don't we build submarines. After all we are very unlikely to want nuclear powered submarines. We do not need to be underwater for long periods and can refuel readily as we would be close to Canada except when we had patrol duties for the United Nations to keep smugglers and pirates at bay from our own shores and those of others less able to defend themselves. My first priority from now on when the Liberals or Conservatives ask my opinion will be for submarines. After all if we build them here then we are employing Canadians and certainly it will be our military manning them (somehow using a term womanning them seems rather strange to this 76 year old). Perhaps it is because I have four brothers that I do tend to feel that men have always had to share their male terms with everyone whereas women had terms reserved for them only. Probably I was never a feminist although I did study science at University and have mostly worked in a science type field. Lots of people thought I was a feminist but I just really liked studying science and mathematics.

Church on You-Tube

Back to Church on You-Tube and it was a very good service. Four hymns now and that is also very nice. I do enjoy this access to the Church Services at my Church.

Back to emails and also working on the Blake Newsletter for the 1st of October. I am going to choose Nicholas Blake (left his will in 1574)  for my discussion person in this newsletter. The last newsletter talked about the erroneous Blake genealogy created by Horatio Gates Somerby using my Blake family at Andover and making up extremely strange stories of their ancestry. Good to now deal with Nicholas Blake as he was the individual given the strange ancestry even though he had left a will clearly stating the names of his children and those of his siblings. His mother's will was also very clear naming her children but unfortunately referred to her husband as Mr Blake. It is an interesting look at the records from the mid 1500s.

 The day beckons.

Our military

We always appreciate our military because they represent the goodness in our society. We want to do our part as a member of the world society and our military is part of that ability. Our ships help to patrol the areas of the international oceans that are frequented by pirates (even in this modern age there are pirates) and that is a very important task for them to take on when it is our turn to help out. But our military also helps us here in Canada during flood season, wild fire season and ice storm season. Canada is a huge country and it is only with the help of the military that we are able to maintain our country with its three ocean coastline and its huge desolate places where only the polar bears and the caribou roam for the most part along with the smaller mammals for over half of the year when we are covered with ice and snow. It is important that our military is well supplied. That was one of the principal reasons that I always voted Conservative. The Conservative party tended to be a much better supporter of maintaining the Canadian military in peacetime as well as wartime. Encouraging people to live in the north was done under a Conservative mandate.

Would I like to live in the north? It doesn't really matter where I live. I spend most of my time at home. Living in the dense cold would have taken getting used to I expect but modern conveniences like generators make it possible to survive the cold temperatures of the arctic but I guess one would want to be able to shop and the like but the more people live in the north the more conveniences that will follow them up there. Plus so many stores deliver now that we have experienced the last nearly two years of COVID isolation. Possibly that in itself will be a boon for Canadian exploration and settlement of the Arctic! The internet makes so many more things possible as well.

Submarines for Canada

We should just get the new submarines  and stop debating it. We need them in order to provide services to the northern stretches of Canada as well as the two ocean coasts Pacific and Atlantic. It is very near sighted of us to be so slow in getting this done. On a map our claim to all of those islands is nicely coloured in our Canadian colours but colonialism is not yet dead and without the ability to patrol those areas we leave ourselves open to "colonization" by others. Protecting our borders is important for everyone and we should not be so naive as to think anyone else is going to protect us. Although the offer by the UK is a very practical one they too have a large area to protect and reliance on anyone else should be a non starter. Our very existence may depend on our ability to maintain a constant presence in the arctic. Military expenditure is never high on the agenda of the Liberals which has always concerned me but the Conservatives mucked up the whole process during their last tenure. Lets get it right! Buy the new submarines.

The sun has returned

A bit sunny today and always welcomed. The sun in the winter is a very pleasant addition to any day especially as the back of our house faces into the sun and the warmth spreads throughout the house during the winter. We still burn a lot of gas for sure but the warming rays of the sun also do a good turn.

I seem to be receiving a number of emails on Edward's research. I need to locate the person that is being discussed and then write back. I am blogging when it seems to be a worthwhile thing to do on his blog. My mind is busy with so many things at the moment that I haven't settled into a good routine yet looking at Edward's research boxes and my own research into the history of my parent's surnames - Blake and Pincombe.

There is always this period of time in the fall when I am snatching time to work on research still but the long winter days are coming.

I generally pull new matches first thing in the morning and that is probably an hour of my time looking at Ancestry, Ged Match, 23 and Me, Living DNA, FT DNA, and My Heritage for myself and all my siblings that have tested. It tends to go quickly as I do not look at anything these days that is less than 20 to 25 centimorgans in one length. The total doesn't weigh in very often but rather that there is one length greater than 20 centimorgans.  Most days I may have 1 or 2 matches some days more but not very often. A  large match in excess of 50 centimetres with 2 or perhaps 3 DNA lengths matching may also attract my attention but generally these can be distant and a result of my two collapsing pedigrees - one in the Knight line on my father's side and one in the Routledge line on my mother's side.

76 years

I can remember both of my grandparents when they were 76 years of age. Both were still busy active people although greatly slowed down from their busy adult-hoods. My grandfather had been retired for ten years from the Canadian National Railways where he was a blacksmith having come from England to work for the then Grand Trunk Railway in 1913. He had been a blacksmith on the South Eastern Line in England living at Eastleigh near Southampton. He lived with us and used to garden our enormous yard. My grandmother was still helping her son in his store but she had not worked outside of the home for many years but did work when she first came to Canada in 1908 until she married in 1913. They were both widowed at that time but with seven grandchildren I do not think they had much time to think about all of that.

Both talked about their spouses so I learned quite a bit about them when I was young. Sort of the fun things about them as I recall. They had reached a point in their grieving where acceptance had sunk in and they moved on with their lives although in a rather quiet way. They were both very quiet people.

Both lived to be about 80 years of age but my maternal grandmother was 13 years younger than my paternal grandfather. When my grandfather turned 78 he did seem to age quicker I can remember. He spent more time sitting quietly although still liked to take a big walk every day. Stroke was common for the elderly in those days. He was a smoker and the stroke that he eventually succumbed to was sudden and he was gone. He was greatly missed by me. I was eight years of age at that time. My grandmother was quite active right up into her late 70s and was actually out gardening the day that she had a stroke and she too did succumb to that stroke as well. She was not a smoker though but diets were high in salt and she did have high blood pressure. Both lived about ten years longer than the average person in those days.

It is sort of funny that I am now 76 as I never expected to live this long having been quite ill in my early 30s. Looking back now as I acquired my health back again in my 30s I am amazed to still be running and exercising but perhaps that is what brought me back as I have always been a bit of an exercise fanatic. Looking after Edward over his last year was extremely difficult and exhausting. I did wonder if I would follow him quickly as used to happen when one spouse nursed the other. But my daughters have been taking care of me and my strength has gradually returned.

Thank you God for letting me live on this earth to the age of 76 years. Much is happening in the world around me as my grandparents used to say with each new invention happening. The same is true now in my old age as each new computer is better and better. This one I have now is coming up on three years of age when I generally replaced them. However this one still is only 50% full of the hard drive and only because I backed up Edward's machine onto it. I may delete all the songs that he has backed up as they do not interest me. I like Classical (he did too but he also liked country and western and jazz and many other kinds of music). That would clear up quite a bit of room.

Whatever will 76 bring one wonders!

Rainy Season has begun

The rainy season has begun with a good rainfall anticipated over the next couple of days. Soon that will turn to snow and the world will take on this perfect picture card look with fresh snowfall spreading out as far as you can see. The days of  computer work are coming replacing the outside work which is always a treat for me. Outside work is very healthy; looks great but is not one of my fondest ways to spend time.

I really like working on my computer peering into the recesses of the past through the long lens of DNA. It is intriguing and will likely occupy me the remainder of my days. My computer hard drive is full of interesting tables looking at interesting sets of data. Eventually they will tell me a story about my Blake and Pincombe families that stretches far into the past. I did share my brother's yDNA with a project looking at the deep ancestry of the British Isles and as time passes that could be most revealing. My grandfather was so convinced that his family had simply always lived in the area in which he spent the first 23 years of his life - Upper Clatford, Hampshire, England. His father had told him so and had also told him about their ancient ancestor who lived at Old Hall with the first name Nicholas.

It was that piece of information that drove my research backwards in time eventually letting me reach a Nicholas Blake who lived at Old Hall, Knights Enham and left his will in 1547 naming his siblings and his children. Nicholas had been named in his mother Jone Blake's will of 1527 taking me back one more generation and I have become convinced that her husband (and Nicholas' father) was Richard Blake who left a will in 1522 and the father of Richard had left a will in 1521 naming his children.

Who was this Robert Blake (father of Richard) who left his will as an elderly man in 1521? He is a mystery man but there are clues for him in the manor records of Andover, Hampshire. Do they take him back to the John Blake that I find in the early 1300s in the Manor Books? Perhaps this winter I will delve into those manor books and have a look at the surname Blake that appears throughout the books in those early years. My Latin still too weak to do much more than that but time stretches ahead of me God willing and my direction is clear to me.

But I also want to work on Edward's research boxes and try to pass all of that material on to other researchers in his family lines. I have talked the talk in my blog but have not yet set that into motion. Another project for those long dark days of winter coming my way. On to the day!

Canada's election

The only benefit was the industry created by it, 600 million dollars went into the economy. On the other hand everyone who liked what the parties were doing voted for them again so the opinion is pretty uniform and the Prime Minister can go back to what he was doing and carry on - it was a mandate for him even if some are saying that his leadership might be questioned. Not too many people can survive the personal attacks that he underwent with the 2019 campaign and emerge unscathed. It was time for a Conservative win and the party has not pulled itself together sufficiently for Conservatives like myself to vote for them. I want proof that they will not undermine the rest of Canada's economy to support the oil industry yet I do support the oil industry. Its potential in permanent plastics is amazing and will help us to move forward creating materials that are environmental friendly because they last and we can green our economy ridding our selves of dependency on gas guzzling cars.  I do own one of those and it is my last car as I shall not drive particularly after I am 80 years of age if I should be gifted by God with such an age.

So we move forward with a new government and he has a four year mandate to carry on with what he is doing. The debt is dreadful of course; I am a fiscal conservative and have never liked the way that Liberals throw money at whatever it is they are trying to solve. But they have actually done a really good job with the pandemic recovery and continue to do so. Universal daycare for $10 per day is a good idea. Never a believer in daycare when my own children were small; I am 100% in favour of it now. I think it really helps children to progress which is difficult given the few children on any block for there to be a community of small children learning to play together and learn together.

Congratulations to all the parties who did try to make this a friendly election; too bad we have people in our midst who can not control their darkest urges with their picketing of hospitals and their ridiculous attitude towards wearing masks. Just wear them; they save lives and it could actually be your own that you are saving.

Missed Church on You-Tube two weeks in a row

Sorry to have missed Church on You-Tube two weeks in a row. Life has been busy but this weekend coming I will be able to be on time with the service on You-Tube. Reading it over afterwards isn't quite the same as actually being there on You-Tube.

Swimming on Saturday in a Lake in the Gatineau Hills. Very pleasant but was cold. Probably my last swim of the season. I do love to swim though and haven't done much the past few years.

Still working away on little projects trying to get loose ends tied up as I move forward in time. The biggest item now would appear to be doing Edward's Tax Return for this year. I am saving all the pieces of paper until I have done that in case I need them. I have done his Tax Return for all of our marriage so am quite familiar with his expenses and donations so hopefully will be straightforward.

Beautiful day; sun is shining but it started out pretty cold but not yet ready to snow which is a bonus perhaps although I do like the snow.

Working on a chart

Spent this day working on a chart that I have wanted to make for a while instead of doing emails. At the moment I feel emailed out.

Along with my 30 minute walk around the house and garden; my calisthenics and my 30 minute run at night, the day passed quickly. Hopefully the back van will soon be gone.

Black van

There has been a black van sitting in front of my house for three weeks. The neighbor said the police took down the license number. Perhaps it will go now. It is pretty rude to leave your car like that for weeks. Our properties are really small and the truck goes from one laneway to the other. Weird really.

Haitus from emails

Decided that I would take a couple of days break from the emails before I get into them. That was rather intensive going through over 2000 emails in just a couple of days.

A bit of housekeeping occupied me today and making a grocery list. It did take time to use up all the food from the last grocery shopping. I am not a particularly big eater. My breakfast being quite basic - milk, large flake oats, cranberries, raisins, wheat germ, wheat bran and blueberries almost all cooked together with the wheat germ, bran and blueberries added at the end. Always a sandwich for lunch and I really do like peanut and banana. Then dinner is usually a protein meat/fish, potato, cooked peas/beans/broccoli and raw tomatoes in season. I like Dad's cookies and generally eat them with a bowl of yoghurt just after lunch.

Surprising finish to reducing emails

Through the day I did manage to reduce the number of emails to 78 and these are all emails that I do have to look at in more depth. Amazing really I could not have done that in the past just too much going on in my life to spend that much time on emails in one day!

I get about 100 emails a day from various places and do do a reduction on that day but I just didn't have time the past two years to be able to positively delete some of the emails without a longer glance.

So the project for today is to go through those 78 emails and one of these days I must do my gmail account.

Half way through September and I am actually thinking about the Blake Newsletter for the first of October. A few thoughts on discussion points. From now on the first article will be a discussion on some individual.

Cool out there and looks like rain again so a productive day inside likely.

Another day on emails

Emails at 1598 and hope to bring them down to 1000 today; will see how that goes. Then I still have to reply to the dozen or so that will need a reply. I will need likely to do a little research to do that so probably early next week I will be up to date and hopefully I can stay up to date. I usually kept my email level in the inbox less than 10 before COVID although there were times when the emails built up. Traveling can throw a wrench into the mix for sure. Then there was gardening after I started to do that in 2008; that too slowed up my handling of my Inbox.

Nearly half way through September; this month has traveled quickly but it leads us right into the long nights that I do cherish as they give me so much research time. I have a company clearing away the snow again this year. That is a job that I really do not need and it is good that enterprising people have come up with snow removal companies. There really isn't anywhere that I have to be so the snow can just sit there and wait for them to come in their sequenced time intervals. I can do the work that I like to do and the world just churns along.

Probably as a free thinker I do wish that all the world had the opportunity to be free thinkers. But free thinking must be tempered with good sense; an obedience to the secular laws of the land but especially keeping God and Mother Nature uppermost in our thoughts as we live on this earth that has been created. Homo Sapiens has but a short lifetime on this earth that we stride every day and we must respect the signs that Mother Nature sends to us to tell us that we are endangering her planet; she can be very unforgiving. God watches over His world and his timeline is infinite; ours is but finite and we need to respect His laws as well (whether God is male or female doesn't really matter - what does matter is that we follow the laws which have been given to us).

Enough philosophy and back to work. Lots to do today as everyday; the workload is unending!

Managed to get down to 324 emails which includes 100 which need a longer look so I am moving forward nicely with that. Sent out about eight responses but they were just very short.

Working on emails

I have 2053 emails in my Inbox so a large chore ahead of me and it is time to work away at that.

I know there are a few promised emails where I said I would check something out in one of my studies and will do those today hopefully.

Other than that it is mostly filing and elimination.

The Bible Reading for today is one that I particularly like from Mark 8: 1-13 but looking at the last section which has been conveniently labeled by the Canadian Bible Society as "A sign from Heaven"

The Pharisees came out and started an argument with Jesus. They wanted to test him by asking for a sign from heaven. Jesus groaned and said, “Why are you always looking for a sign? I can promise you that you will not be given one!” Then he left them. He again got into a boat and crossed over to the other side of the lake.

I think that this is one of Jesus' comments that we should take very much to heart. He said that "I can promise you that you will not be given one!" I very much believe that Jesus listens to our prayers and guides us along a path that leads us eventually to where ever we are predestined to go. But that path isn't laid out in the stars for us to see. The rules that we were given by God through Moses are our mainstay and how we must live in order to fulfill the mandate we have as a Christian to live the life that God has given us. He isn't going to constantly send us signs to remind us of those rules; we are a clever people and should be able to follow the simple rules of the Ten Commandments.

We have developed, as a people, over time a rule book that controls our secular life but the controls on that are definitely here on earth.

Amazingly by noon I am down to just under 1600 emails. It was a task that I have been putting off for a year nearly as the emails grew. I started sitting with Edward every morning so did not really look at my email very much until the time in the afternoon when he did his physiotherapy exercises. Half of an hour though did not give me very much time and then I would help him with his biking and we would watch more TV. I have barely watched TV since actually - maybe the news a few times a day and then one show on Netflix in the evening.

Will set the emails aside for another day and work on a couple of projects that I have wanted to start for a while. Mind you I have not responded to a single email; they are sitting waiting for me to have gone through all the emails but thus far there are just around 50 of the 500 emails that need a longer look - i.e. not just direct filing or deletion. As I move further back the deletion rate is high as I did not have too much time to really go through anything.

A busy couple of days

Amazing how busy one can become. I have been working on a couple of transcriptions for newsletters and the day passes so quickly.

Fall weather is coming quite definitely and the cool breezes are passing over us.

Had to miss Church today due to another commitment. Will read the service tomorrow.

COVID-19 and where are we

Vaccinations are moving along slowly with 41.5% of the world population having received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine but only 1.9% of people in low-income countries have received at least one dose.

https://ourworldindata.org/covid-vaccinations

In Canada  of the total population 74.27% have had one dose and 67.98% are fully vaccinated. The eligible portion of the population has 84.49% with one dose and 77.34% are fully vaccinated. These numbers are adjusted to real time population apparently as provinces have a current population total to submit with their data. We really need that to be over 90% fully vaccinated of the eligible population to minimize outbreaks. I like to see that vaccination is mandatory in so many workplaces especially if children who can not yet be vaccinated are the clientele.

The new normal

This is like the first day of my changed life.  As I drove back from the airport yesterday I realized that this was the first time that I have driven that path on my own in 47 years. Always I had a child in tow for airport duty otherwise Edward would have been driving. His dislike of my driving was legendary but gradually as the disease overtook him he was happy to have me drive. I do not mind driving I am just out of the habit in terms of highway driving and I consider it bad manners in the least and criminal at the most for someone to drive on the highway going much too slow.  You are an accident waiting to happen and I do not want to be that person causing possible grief to others on the highway. However coming back on 417 that short distance from Hunt Club to Blair proved to be quite exciting for me. It is a path that I have used many times (Walkley to Blair) in my working days as a proofreader/copyeditor from my place of occupation. It just felt really comfortable but it was a relatively short distance over in the flash of an eye.

Now this house is very very large; much too big for one person considering that entire families are living in just a quarter of it in other countries. My footprint is much too large and reducing it has proven to be a challenge. At the moment on my front lawn I have probably 100 clay plant pots of various sizes hoping someone will give them a home. There is also an animal cage dating back to the racoon days. There are plant holders for large plants in the garden of various types. Perhaps someone will give them a new home. Taking them to Salvation Army may be a choice but I probably will not do that this time although have taken them a great deal that has downsized us somewhat. It continues to be very full this house. Having taken so much out I wonder how we ever managed to have so much in the house to be honest.

But Edward enjoyed owning stuff and the industries of Canada depend on you wanting to own all that stuff. It wasn't a bad thing to do; it kept people employed all of our married life as we bought more and more stuff. Fortunately some of that stuff did gradually move on through the years as it would have been much worse if not for that. I want to get the bicycles hung up in the shed today so will work at that later. Should be interesting; fortunately I am fairly strong and can still do such things. Why keep the bikes? Not sure at the moment but I do enjoy a bicycle ride and my bicycle is relatively new. The other two are older and could go and perhaps they will go in the spring. We will see about that. But for the moment they will spend the winter in the shed.

So what to do now that my changed life is beginning. There are my newsletters due on the first day of each month. Not planned as a stabilizing device in my life they just flowed that way. As I developed each one it seemed logical to pick the next month that did not have a newsletter to begin. The next one due the 1st of October is the first one that I started - Blake Newsletter. I have a few ideas in mind already that I will work on.

I need to start on Edward's research publication as well. I haven't really helped him since 2011 other than when we were at repositories in which case he just gave me a list of what he wanted and I did that for him but did not feed it into his narrative nor did he particularly want to discuss his research other than the occasional time when he wanted me to be a sounding board on any British Isles Research which he was doing. He was probably 5 to 10% British Isles with the last person born in the British Isles in his genealogy being his Great Great Grandmother Link's birth 29 Sep 1819 at Aylmerton, Norfolk, England and she emigrated to Canada with her family in 1832. There is just a sprinkling of British Isles born ancestors with most of them being dissenters in the 1630s and 1640s coming to the American Colonies in those early days where they met and married his Dutch/French/German/Swedish ancestors. The English literally disappeared in his family's history with most people that we met considering themselves to be of Dutch or German descent.

Today is a work day and I must finish cleaning the basement. Will start the robot vacuuming and then wash the floor and do some dusting and that chore is done for a bit.

Raining today

Raining today; ground is still very dry. Grass will have a bit of time to grow before the cold weather sets in. 17 degrees celsius already and I can hear them working on the light rail out on the highway. Not a loud noise just a quiet sound of working.

Top floor accomplished yesterday and today the main floor which is possibly the easiest now plus I did a little work on that since the puppy and large dog were here. It is nice to have all the comings and goings the house is busy most of the time now. Edward did find that hard the last couple of years although he loved to see everyone but it tired him.

Very overcast and dark today; perhaps a lot of rain coming. Will wait and see on that.

No outside work today likely but that is okay; I can concentrate on cleaning the inside.

I heard from Edward's Swedish cousin in his German great grandparents lines. She was wondering how many descendants in Canada so let her know in the hundreds likely. I have contacted the Schultz family but have not heard back yet but now I am thinking that this correspondent was just curious how many and not in corresponding. That works for me and will just let it rest now.

Cleaning cycle begins

Took Labour Day off from cleaning so the cleaning cycle begins today. Life has begun once again to take on a pattern. I think patterns are good actually. They keep you grounded with items that need doing. My newsletters are like that as well. The beginning of every new month means a new newsletter as well.

The garden waits now for a frost so that I can cut it all down and bag it up for compost. The growing season was not as good as usual but the drought had a lot of say in that and my not watering.

Masks are still the order of the day. I actually do not mind wearing a mask. This time of year my hay fever is at its height. Slowly but surely our vaccine percentage is coming up to 85% of the population with a first dose and nearly 77% of the population that is eligible having two doses. We are reaching for 90% double dose and it begins to look more and more doable - that is 90% of the eligible. That will help to protect those who can not be vaccinated.

New Puppy

A new puppy in the family and she is a sweetie; chewing everything. Looked after her yesterday afternoon and spent the time running after her in the yard and keeping her from eating the plants that I was not sure about. She is seven weeks old and busy. Slept through the night last night waking up briefly around 5:00 a.m. but went back to sleep in just a couple of minutes. The older dog (4 year old) has allowed her in to be part of the family and the cat (2 years old) is tolerating her but keeps her in line!

My days will be busy watching all those animals cavort about the place. Animals that I know I am quite fond of and still miss Jackson who passed away just two years ago. He is still missed and my husband missed him a great deal as well. The older dog Hogan was 17 years old when he passed and he had quite bonded with Ed so much so that when he was meant to go back to his own home he would check out whether he was staying with us or going home. It was cute actually and Edward did love that dog. But like all dogs they have a shorter life span and we must part with our beloved pets but they live on forever in our hearts.

I apparently was very fond of our dog Normie when I was a little girl. He seemed to know that my sight was limited as he would follow me about when I was toddling around the house outside and if I left the perimeter of the front lawn would grab my dress and pull me back home again. I was the only one of the children (five of us at that time) that could climb up on his back and he would let me ride him. He was a large border collie and wonderful with children. I was just three when he died and greatly missed  as he was still talked about all of my childhood. How much we loved that dog.

Labour Day Monday and the Taliban are working with Qatar to help them to establish government and reestablish the commercial air traffic in Afghanistan. That is a good sign hopefully although do not know what women's rights are like in Afghanistan but I assume that the Taliban will be a kinder regeneration of their earlier rulers in order to stabilize Afghanistan and establish her as a trading nation in order to benefit all of the people of Afghanistan. I am hopeful anyway. Getting involved in other people's countries is not our usual way. We tend to be helpful from a distance and come when asked. We should remain that way. We can not change people's ways. I note that Women's economic rights in Qatar are quite broad as they have the right to work (usually get their family's approval on their career choice and pursue a job that is socially acceptable). They are free to open and run their own businesses. Apparently in the Gulf area they are among one of the best nations for women's rights. So ever hopeful in that regard.

The Bible Reading for the day especially spoke to me today:

Ecclesiastes 3:1-15

Everything Has Its Time

Everything on earth
has its own time
   and its own season.
There is a time
for birth and death,
   planting and reaping,
for killing and healing,
   destroying and building,
for crying and laughing,
   weeping and dancing,
for throwing stones
and gathering stones,
   embracing and parting.
There is a time
for finding and losing,
   keeping and giving,
for tearing and sewing,
   listening and speaking.
There is also a time
for love and hate,
   for war and peace.

What God Has Given Us To Do

What do we gain by all of our hard work? I have seen what difficult things God demands of us. God makes everything happen at the right time. Yet none of us can ever fully understand all he has done, and he puts questions in our minds about the past and the future. I know the best thing we can do is to always enjoy life, because God’s gift to us is the happiness we get from our food and drink and from the work we do. Everything God has done will last forever; nothing he does can ever be changed. God has done all this, so that we will worship him.

Everything that happens
   has happened before,
and all that will be
   has already been—
God does everything
   over and over again.

Grocery Shopping

I was contemplating whilst I grocery shopped yesterday that I have been shopping alone for groceries and at the drug store for nearly a year. Edward stopped going in September last year. He was still pretty active walking around the garden and a walk up and down the street every day but he just didn't want to grocery shop or go to the drug store anymore. We still went out when we could to the retail stores; his favourites were definitely Canadian Tire and Home Depot. It was nice to be able to wear a mask in Home Depot since the sawdust can be a little annoying in the nasal passages! He especially liked walking in the mall every day. Each day is a milestone in some ways as I relive the events of last year in my mind with each passing day.

Another couple of weeks and I will be 76. It is amazing really to be 3/4 ths of a century old. Today is Sunday and off to YouTube for Church today.

Sun is coming into its Fall placement

Gradually the world around me is turning towards the Fall. The small animals are storing up for the winter as they scurry in and out of our yard collecting what they can to fill their little barrows where they will spend the long cold Canadian winter. Very few walnuts fall out of the huge tree because the squirrels have been up there cutting them off and carrying them to their hiding places. But this year they are plentiful and there are a few through the day but gone by the end of the day into hiding!

Yesterday I cut out the dead branches in the elderberry bushes. They are dry enough now that the clippers could break through. Sawing is something I only do as a last necessity. I think we really should pull all of them down and plant some new bushes and will see what spring brings. The flower gardens are not nearly as nice as when Edward managed them. I did not add any annuals; Laportes closed up their business and I would have had to find a new place and just never got to that. The perennials suffered from a lack of water during the drought although all of them still flowered.

The grass is coming back. Although I will have to get a load of dirt next summer and put grass seed down at the back. But that has been needed for a couple of years and the drought only made it worse. Have to decide what to do with half of a garden of raspberry bushes. They have come back nicely in spite of the drought. They seem to prosper under the walnut tree as did the green onions but nothing else really does in the vegetable garden variety.

Sent the obituary for Edward into the Alumni Gazette today. I have meant to send it before now but each new thing has its strain for me. There is an entire group of people who may not know yet and I am preparing myself for that. Although it is surprising how many people have passed away that we knew in our past. I just never thought it would happen with us this early. But realism does eventually set in as I realize how ill he was back in 2011 before the pacemaker was inserted and the revival which I thought was right back to normal but I am realizing that I continued working full time in the garden from 2011 on and never actually decreased that work load. He was just a lot better after the pacemaker than before it and it gave him a pleasanter further decade of living and especially traveling which he loved doing so much.

Still in COVID-19 restrictions and I believe we will be wearing masks until next summer and possibly the fall and winter/spring after that. It could be 2023 before life has any semblance of life before COVID-19. But the impact will always be there for this generation including the children who have lost so much in terms of social interaction. Now we must always be on the lookout for potential pandemics as we should have been when this one hit.

Busy days getting ready for fall

Yesterday was incredibly busy as was the day before. I am trying to get organized for the Fall and some things got forgotten but did publish the Newsletter today in the blog for Pincombe-Pinkham.

Mind is clear again and ready to move forward on what needs to be done next. We are off to the Traill site with a load of wood and metal that will help with the garage and shed. They were absolutely packed full and gradually we have whittled that down. It is not knowing what to do with everything that is the biggest problem. I had no idea you can hire people to downsize for you and probably would have done that if I had known but on the other hand a lot of it only could be done by us in terms of Edward's library but then there was the rest and that would have been handy but we are nearing the end of the downsizing. I want to give Edward's clothing to a place where it can be well used - he had five excellent winter coats and several pairs of boots but need to wait on COVID for that. That was also one of his thoughts to help out people who needed warm clothing especially.

I still have a wooden hope chest and a large wheeled container to give to Edward's niece of all of his mother's things.  I still have 36 boxes of his research to work through and then I do have the things that I have been doing but seldom have time to look at these days but that time will come once again. Talking to Edward so much when he was pretty much a patient the last six months did give me lots of ideas on how to manage all of his material. But still it is overwhelming to even think of doing it all so must do it one thought at a time.

We finally found his collection of sea shells that we have collected through the years. No ideas on what to do with that yet but want to give it a suitable home. He loved all of those shells so very much. They reminded him of traveling here there and everywhere. Sometimes we would just stop along the Atlantic and enjoy a small beach area for an hour or so in our travels. I am still amazed that I traveled so much as I am pretty much a homebody but he wanted to see everything there was to see especially those last seventeen years after he retired. We were hardly home weekends even though I was still working. Life was extremely busy.

Up early today but have a lot to do this day and will be glad to sink into bed this evening. I generally shut everything down at 9:00 pm and fast asleep just after 10 pm. I got into that habit when Edward was ill as I needed all that energy to look after him.

1.    Discussion: Who was John Pincombe who died in 1794/5 at Bishops Nympton?

Of strong interest to me of course, one of the two men who were buried in this time period was my 4x great grandfather. Until I went to the Society of Genealogists (SOG) in London in 2013 I did not know for sure which of the John Pincombe in the records was mine in terms of his death date. His will was destroyed in the bombing of the Record Office at Devon during World War II. It was my good fortune to be a member of the SOG and attending the Who Do you Think You Are Live in London, UK that year. I had checked into the booth to have a look around and asked about a record that they held at their library. The attendant obliging looked it up and said no problem come and see it anytime. We arrived there a day or so after the Conference on the bus and that was a really interesting trip. Usually we took the Underground but this time we decided to ride the bus and see a bit of London from that view. It was worth the time and effort. We stopped at the British Library as I had a document I wanted to see there and my husband wanted to take the tour of that library. We did both. Then we walked to the Society of Genealogists (maybe twenty minutes but they have moved from there now). Quickly into the Reading Room there and documents in hand. They were missing the large Pincombe charts and I must check to see if they ever found them as I could send my copies or ask one of the earlier researchers to send a copy as mine are a copy of a copy and not as good as the original. But I digress; when I arrived I asked for the folder as well as the charts and the folder held a real treat for me. The wait was not a very long one and the rewards in that folder were amazing.

Number 2 sheet held an abstract of the Last Will and Testament of John Pincombe (my 4x great grandfather). Since he was still alive the 14th of June 1794 when his will was dated and the will was probated 7th of May 1795 he died between these two dates. Two John Pincombe were buried at Bishops Nympton one the 9 Aug 1794 and one on the 27 March 1795 (I have fiche of the original parish registers and have transcribed them for all of the Bishops Nympton records up to the mid 1900s). Would one wait ten months to probate the will? I do not think so particularly; you are either going to probate just after death or not going to do probate. There is a small mystery in the precise because he mentions that when his two sons William and Robert are 21 years of age they will inherit rights to West Wood sharely jointly. Robert at the time of the will being written was not 21 years of age (he was baptized 4 Oct 1775) but William was thought to be baptized 21 Dec 1769 which would make him 25 years of age plus his father did name him as executor. I do not see any other William Pincombe baptized at Bishops Nympton in this time period who would be less than 21 years of age in 1794 (indeed the only one is actually older than this William). It does strike me as odd but I am not looking at the original will; just an abstract. All of the wills of the sons of John Pincombe and Mary Charly are available and I have blogged them in the past. By yDNA a descendant of the William Pincombe (my fifth cousin) and a descendant of Robert Pincombe (my third cousin once removed) are a good match. Looking at the properties mentioned is informative and does tend to assist but I am ever mindful that properties passed around in this Pincombe family and they also purchased land from other Pincombe members over time. West Wood, the property mentioned in the will for William and Robert was held by Robert at the time of his death in 1827.

John Pincomb married Mary Charly 8 Nov 1767 at Bishops Nympton. Looking at the last letter and the smudge I rather think that the spelling was Charly for Mary’s surname. I haven’t looked at that for quite a while and I retook the image with my cell phone and the image is much superior to the one that I had on file. Interesting that Mary signed as Mary Pincomb rather than Mary Charly as one would most often find on the wedding registrations. John Pincomb would have been 39 years of age when he married after the death of both of his parents.

John and Mary were both of the parish and married by Banns. Both signed the registration with the witness being an individual who often signed the register. John Pincombe’s parents were deceased and thought to be John Pincombe and Grace Manning who married at Bishops Nympton 20 Mar 1725. They were buried at Bishops Nympton John 11 Apr 1759 and Grace 27 Jul 1764 also at Bishops Nympton. They had three children baptized at Bishops Nympton William (baptized 20 Jun 1727), John (baptized 13 Jan 1728) and Grace (baptized 7 Mar 1732). Grace married John Butcher 31 Mar 1755 at Bishops Nympton and was buried 16 Jun 1763 about six months after her fourth child (a son, John Pincombe Butcher passed away as an infant). William the eldest married Grace Smyth 13 Jun 1758 at North Molton and their only child was a son William baptized 31 May 1759 and buried 26 Dec 1780 at Bishops Nympton. Dates are recorded as old style with January, February, March (to Lady’s Day) following December and retaining the year (i.e.) William and John were a year and a half apart.

Having transcribed the entire set of parish registers for Bishops Nympton I am confident saying that this John Pincombe likely follows the descent mentioned above particularly because of the property mentioned in the precise of his will.

The Freeholders Index for Devon (http://www.foda.org.uk/freeholders/index/namesindex.htm)  does show a John Pincombe as a copyholder at Bishops Nympton in 1741 and in 1751 and a William Pincombe yeoman also at Bishops Nympton in 1762 (in 1783 this William was buried at Bishops Nympton). In 1783 a John Pincombe is listed as yeoman, copyholder at Bishops Nympton (replacing his brother William who is deceased). In 1799 William Pincomb is listed at Bishops Nympton. In 1799 John Pincombe is listed at Molland. John Pincombe was the eldest son of John Pincombe and Mary Charly and was known to have lived principally at Molland and the properties which he held there are listed in his will. Although the eldest, it was his younger brother William who was executor of the estate and we do find William at Bishops Nympton in 1799. Robert (my 3x great grandfather) Pincombe is not listed in 1799 (he would have then been 24 years of age but had not yet received West Wood it might appear; he does hold it later with East Wood and Park). The properties appear to fit with this line of descent as well.

There is some new material in this compared to my blog posts. Certainly it is only today that I feel that the spelling of Mary’s surname has been misinterpreted with my newer camera picking up the Charly much more clearly rather than Charlie which has been the usual transcription of that particular marriage registration.

The next issue will look at John Pincomb married to Grace Manning and who was he? What do we know about that John Pincomb?

2.    Landkey Parish Records

These baptismal records are transcribed from the fiche of the original Parish Records for Landkey, Devon. I have changed the orientation of the newsletter to make it easier to publish the transcriptions for Landkey directly from my Excel file.
