Pyncombe at Buckington Loges als High Bickington alias Bickington

An interesting document written by a member of the Woollacott family.

 http://www.myfourleggedstool.com/uploads/1/9/2/5/19256439/early_woollacotts_and_variations_thereon.pdf

His discussion on the Woollacott is not helpful to me but he refers to a book "The Book of High Bickington" published by Avril Stone.

"From the 15th century onwards the Pyncombes of North Molton amassed much of the land surrounding High Bickington. This land was put into a charitable trust on January 20, 1730. On November 26, 1919 the Pyncombe Estate sold all their properties at an auction. J. H. Woollacott is recorded as purchasing Yelland Farm at that auction." See the will of Gertrude Pyncombe which was blogged earlier and she was the last surviving member of this line. Clearly this brings back attention to the chart of descent on Chart 1-2 to be interesting to this study.

http://kippeeb.blogspot.com/2011/08/will-of-gertrude-pyncombe-prob-11643.html

I find the reference to North Molton interesting as that does appear to be the "home" of the Pincombe/Pyncombe/Pencombe family and the earliest location in which they are found in North Devon thus far in my studies. The caption on the Visitation of Devon 1620 reads that they arrived with Lord Zouch at the beginning of the reign of Henry VII (1485). Lord Zouch had fought on the side of Richard III at the Battle of Bosworth Field.

I do need to bring the Tax records into this study as well. It is known that this Pyncombe line ended with Gertrude as neither she nor her siblings had any living heirs descendant of their parents. This is the line that used the coat of arms attributed to Pincombe.

Edward's Ham Radio Equipment

Edward had put all of his Ham Radio Equipment together last summer and kept meaning to write or call the Ham Radio Club to donate his equipment which was mostly from the 1970s and 1980s. But he did finally leave that with us to do. Yesterday Dave picked up all of the equipment except for the table that he had built to use when he was operating the equipment. We will donate the table to Salvation Army. It is a simple table but with the half shelf built on top it could be handy to someone. I have too many tables in my basement - five actually and all served a purpose. At the end of all of this there will be just one in the laundry area. At nearly 76 years I do not need very much and my footprint needs to diminish considerably.

I never was interested in Ham Radio and probably as a young wife I would rather he spent more time with me but I learned to accept that he liked to be on his Ham Radio a couple of hours in the late evening. Once we had children I did not notice that as much I must admit. Edward was always busy and all the hobbies he craved as a child and teenager he acquired as an adult which is good really as he had a very happy and contented life and that is important I always think.

So day ten of full vaccination and I believe I will stop counting off those days. I think I expected more of a reaction perhaps but only in retrospect can you really note that it was a reaction rather than just a tired day or whatever.

It is nice to see the vaccination rate rising quickly these days we will need that in the days ahead as the Delta variant permeates our life. Already worldwide it is threatening everyone. Then there is the heat wave in the Prairies and what that will do to this year's crops and the people living there as well.

It is hard to let go of all of Edward's things to be honest. It is another part of him that is disappearing from my view.  But it was his wish and gradually I will have around me memories of Edward that keep him alive for all of us. Downsizing was in his mind certainly this last few years and he did do a lot of that. The number of boxes in his office has diminished by at least a third the last five years. I bought a box for each of our European trips and will now put everything that we bought on each trip into that box as a memory box rather than have them on the shelves as they have been. Ed used to regularly reorganize them to suit himself. He loved to remember all of those trips. The first was so different from the rest but he enjoyed it none the less but from then on he couldn't wait to do another trip once the dust had settled on all of that.

Working away on the Manors etc list for John Pincombe. I had read through it when I purchased it about ten years ago just to see which properties were listed - it is two pages long. I had forgotten that Gatcombe was on the list and that was the property where my John Pincombe lived before he emigrated to Canada with his family in 1850 arriving in the Port of New York in early 1851. I find glimpses of Gatcombe through the years after 1605 and always a John Pincombe occupying it. It is curious really as it seems to switch about somewhat between lines. But this John Pincombe is a bit of a mystery and no one yet has clearly shown his line coming down from him. This document mentions that he has a son John Pincombe so very helpful but is he the John Pincombe who married Amy Dodderidge - possibly and that fits him into the Chart 1-2 for South Molton and North Molton. Perhaps I will be able now to work this line through as I transcribe the document.

Day nine since vaccination

Fascinating really thinking that I am building up all those antibodies however my trusty mask is ever with me. I think that we will be wearing them until next spring anyway and I plan on doing so in stores and when I can not be a minimum of two metres away from everyone.

Working on the will for the latest Pincombe Newsletter and then I will transcribe the list of properties that John Pincombe held by freehold, leasehold or other. The South Molton family was quite interesting to look at and finding this document clearly separated them into their own grouping. I shall compare that grouping that I found with the chart that included South Molton created by the two earlier researchers for the Pincombe-Pinkham one-name study at the Guild of one-name studies as well as the Visitation of Devon for the Southmolton Pincombe family.

Today a member of the Amateur Ham Radio Club is coming to take all of Edward's radio equipment. He wanted us to donate it to the Radio Club. He became a member back when we first moved here and got his license. He used to spend hours talking to people around the world and rather enjoyed it but life took on a different turn when he started going to the OGS Ottawa Branch meetings with his cousin Gordon Riddle. He became so deeply involved with that group along with Orleans United Church that the years from the latter part of the 1970s to the latter part of the 1990s literally flew by with his many activities and he spent less time on his ham radio. We did do a few car rallies with them in the 1980s which were fun. I always describe the latter part of the 1970s to the latter part of the 1990s as our middle years and we were both very busy. I worked at home proofreading and copy editing until 1995 when I returned to work outside of the home first at the Medical School and then what became during my time there The Ottawa Hospital. I pretty much dropped everything that I was doing when I did that - no longer Treasurer for Camp Bitobi; did not teach Sunday School or do the Supplies for Sunday School; no longer did World Day of Prayer Services which was an ecumenical group; did not help at school with computers which I had done for about six years. All of those things I no longer did (helping at school was my project and I enjoyed helping the children learn to use the computer; I remember the boys especially as they were so excited to be learning; they could hardly control their excitement they enjoyed it so much - they did remind me of my brothers). I am more used to boys probably as three of my four brothers were closest to me in age with my sisters being 6 years older and 8 years younger. I especially enjoyed the years when I became anonymous going to Dominion Chalmers and Christ Church Cathedral. It was wonderful just to go and worship and be with God in His House.  I just worked and spent the rest of the time with my children who were now pretty grown up for sure. Edward was so busy in those years he was seldom home in the evening - meeting after meeting plus he did French courses for years.

Then suddenly in 2004 he decided to retire and that did surprise me but he loved it doing his genealogy full time and he loved cooking making lovely meals for us day after day. I would work another three years and then I retired as well and finally I got him to travel to Europe which he loved doing once he got over the first trip. Of course we were always on the go to different conferences and ancestor hunting (as I called it) in the United States and Canada and Edward's many meetings all through those years of  his retirement.

Eight days now since vaccination

I am sure that my immune system is working overtime on the COVID-19 second vaccination but I do not think I am noticing anything in particular. Doing a shoulder stand I can still feel that curling into yoga poses is not quite as efficient but I have also been doing a lot of shifting of boxes and things so maybe just more muscle strain from that than anything. It is good to have the second shot and be part of the rapidly increasing number of Canadians who are fully vaccinated. I think though that I will be wearing a mask until next spring; the variants are with us for awhile I suspect and we will need to be cautious.

Ottawa Virtual 5K Race

We ran the 5K in the Ottawa Virtual Marathon and thus far I am the only female who ran in the 75-79 age group. That did surprise me actually.

The cleaning begins once again as it is Monday. Today the top floor and I shall try to be as efficient as I have been lately on the main floor. It is a slightly larger area with the room over the garage. It is much too big for me; it always was as Ed occupied most of it with an office in the room over the garage and our bedroom was half library or more plus all the closets were bulging with boxes including the room where I worked. I still have not looked in the boxes in that closet. I did aspire to being totally on line and except for one large bucket of documents and pictures I have been able to keep to that. I have one bookcase of books but not a large one.

On to the day. Must pick raspberries. Will begin with another page of the will and then off to breakfast. It always surprises me that I can pick up these transcriptions from the 1500s and 1600s and still read them after a year of not really doing any.

Sunday - the last one in June

My favourite day by far has always been Sunday. Waking up early and seeing the morning and knowing this is a day that is complete. Life always returns to Sunday and the gift of God to his people. Today it is the promise of more rain which we still need a lot of to moisten the growing earth. Leaves are inside out in the wind; the promise is there but not until later perhaps as the sun has just broken through the clouds bathing us with that brilliant light.

Church at 10:30 on YouTube; service bulletin on line. The ingenuity of the human race has given us the ability to still have Church even with massive lockdowns. We can still thank God for his love.

Yesterday was a day of great accomplishment as we worked on the basement which has been cluttered for awhile. There are items to go to Restore that are still useable but I do not want them; they are too big or too many or they just have the ability to have a new life and I should do that for them. I need to keep downsizing and my daughter helps to keep me on that path even when I become resistant and afraid that I am losing too much of Edward since he accumulated all of this stuff. But this isn't just Edward. I have so many reminders of Edward all around me I can give some away to others to restore and give new life to those objects.

The downsizing can continue. I have those huge bookcases which have not yet left and they need to go along with the books so that we can move forward. All of them are going to places that Edward wanted or that have appeared because of what he had done in the past with his books which had become surplus to him a few years ago.

The next step is definitely the Chair Lift to a new person with such great need. The books to the archives; the bookcases and other books to their new home so that we can reorganize the house in a less busy way so that I can maintain it for a little longer before I sell it. Gradually the things around me will be what Edward and I especially shared these last few years together when we grew close once again as in our younger days. The busyness of our middle years will disappear with the downsizing and my memories will be of fresh happenings in those days of travel in the world. Those interesting items that we purchased on our walks in the mall remind me of our later anniversaries and birthdays with all those good memories of time shared.

Thank you Sunday for always being there week after week. COVID-19 continues to affect our lives in so many ways.

One week since full vacination

No headache yesterday and the feeling of being winded gone as well when running. Beats per minute remain at 57 which has become my new normal perhaps up from 52 or 53 which was quite low.

Found an interesting discussion topic for the Pincombe Newsletter and will work away at that for the next couple of days. Just working through the will again to refresh my mind on this John Pymcombe and then I need to transcribe the inventory document as I have not yet done that. I read it through to see what I could discover years ago as I fitted my Pincombe line into the existing Visitations. Land Records can be very helpful when you are working with families that name all of their sons William, John, Thomas, Richard although generally it is not too hard to separate out the various Pincombe lines at North Molton, South Molton, Bishops Nympton etc.

Initially I thought I might combine two issues but this particular item is begging to be discussed so will do it. For the next Pincombe Newsletter 1st June I will pick another interesting document to discuss and I am not sure which one yet!

Then I still have Blake Newsletter for the 1st of April and the 1st of July and the H11 Newsletter for the 1st of May and the 1st of August. I am not sure if I will be caught up by then or if it will be the 1st of September issue of the Pincombe Newsletter that will see me caught up. H11 tends to be rather short for Issues 2 to 4 because I only publish statistics on the subclades once a year. It will be interesting to see if a new phylotree emerges in the next couple of years. I am also curious if the companies will start to look at COVID-19 and whether particular haplogroups were more susceptible to the disease and whether the severity of the disease could be predicted. It might be interesting looking at future pandemics to see if particular mutations in different subclades were helpful this time around.

I had moved away from thinking about research but Edward's illness brought me back and I am part of a couple of different research projects. They have my mind working away these days as there is so much that can now be examined with regard to Post-COVID-19 research projects to discover as much as we can to prepare for future possible pandemics.

Vaccination day plus six

Yesterday by evening I had a bit of a headache once again but by morning I was again headache free. I do notice when I am running that I become a little winded after 4000 steps but my heart rate is about the same as always.

I have been working with SCIO on the Chair Lift for a person who has need of one. It was set up to remove it this morning but today it was pouring so I cancelled that for another time. I am not in a rush and there isn't anyone apparently who needs it at the moment. It would just be in storage so it might as well sit on my stairs for longer. It is really the first medical aid that we brought in for Edward and he enjoyed having it. He was as mobile as he had been with the chair. He would walk up the stairs during the day just for exercise but he had the chair for the tired times when he wanted to go up and down as he always had. It probably does take a strong need to motivate me to give these items away. Probably unreasonably I feel like a small amount of Edward disappears as his items are donated and I probably need to see that they are serving a good purpose. His books are all packed up now and await the process of them being amalgamated into the Ottawa Branch Library of the Ontario Genealogical Society. I can go there anytime and see his books and that makes that donation so much easier.

Today I am thinking about the next newsletter which would be Pincombe-Pinkham Newsletter. I am trying to decide content and technically it would be the March edition so I am actually catching up slowly as I am just missing March and June for this newsletter. I will be putting in the usual North Molton baptisms and I am considering doing a second one of the nearby Devon villages. I believe I will go with Landkey. Baptisms, Marriages and burial all begin in 1602 and the transcriptions run to the mid 1700s.  The Landkey interest results from the children of Hugh Pincombe who was married to Sarah (unknown). He was one of the sons of John Pincombe and Johane Blackmoore who married 25 Sep 1655 at Bishops Nympton and were my 7x great grandparents. Hugh was the youngest son and my line descends from the eldest William Pincombe married to Mary Vicary 17 Jun 1685 at Bishops Nympton. Hugh's line daughtered out in the second generation it would appear.

I have a number of items to transcribe for the Pincombe family but I suspect that work will wait until next fall and winter.

5th day of full vaccination

Waking up early; mind is too active. Looks like rain and hopefully that will happen. I am feeling quite fine on this 5th day since full vaccination. It is nice to know that I am busily building up antibodies.

I have a lot to do but my mind doesn't seem to move along to doing it. Perhaps after we have the Memorial Service I will be able to move forward with the things that I still need to do.

Edward did not like to be alone. I tried to never leave him alone during our marriage unless I had to be away which did happen occasionally. But our daughters were always there for their Dad after they were born. They adored him and his loss is felt very strongly by them. We go on with our lives but carry him close to our hearts and I know that I am not ready yet to let the urn go into a burial spot. It just isn't in me to put him a place where he is alone although a graveyard is full of people but they are all strangers to him. I need to think this through for awhile. The best case scenario for me to be happy is to keep him with me until my turn comes to join him. I know that but I need to also respect his wishes and I am contemplating how I would fulfill his wishes in the best way possible.

H11 Newsletter Volume 5, Issue 1, 2021

The H11 Newsletter Volume 5, Issue 1, 2021 is published on the website.

Cybercrime

Cybercrime is something that I know very little about other than to never click on a hypertext link that you receive unless you requested it or you know why you were sent one.

When we were in school way back in the 50s and 60s, we were entering into what became known as the Cold War and our ally in the Second World War namely the Soviet Union was suddenly on the other side in the Cold War. It was the first time that we actually shared somewhat of a border with a nation (a water border) that was on the opposite side of our ideology and against everything for which we stood. We were actually between the United States and the Soviet Union looking at the globe with the North Pole in our sights and the world beneath that. I always knew that our military was tough; we weren't big but we could and would fight for our freedom.

So what is freedom here compared to life in the Soviet Union and now China (another ally in World War II)? Perhaps the freedom is in determining the people that represent us in our parliament; is that our biggest freedom? Sometimes I think it is. COVID-19 has shown us our freedoms in some ways. We are a managed country both by the Health Department and by our elected officials. Our elected officials though in the long run are the ones who determine just what conditions are imposed on us relying on other Departments like Health to make decisions on what will protect the greatest number of Canadians. That proved to be a problem with elected officials listening to the commerce side instead of Health resulting in sudden and devastating lockdowns. Health should have more say under some conditions that is for sure and they finally did when the infrastructure of the hospitals was threatened by too many COVID-19 cases in the ICU. Of course the dictatorships are busy trying to convince their people that they do the best job of providing the best life for them. That will be the most important item in the future is proving that democratic institutions are the best way for people to survive and that everyone benefits.

But why should cybercrime frighten us? Can it take us over and turn us into dictatorships like China and these days Russia as well? I still think a lot of cybercrime is committed to garner wealth by unscrupulous people who are not linked to any country particularly but countries that want to remain dictatorships use their actions to maintain control in their countries and show that they are more efficient than our democracies. They permit cybercriminals to operate within their borders probably and possibly demand a portion of monies stolen from the democracies. That would be something interesting to know.

That would be the advantage of having the United Nations tax people who do not pay appropriate taxes to any particular nation. Everyone should pay to support the infrastructure of the world; no one should be exempt.

Covid Vaccination Two and Day number four

At day four now for the second Covid Vaccination and the bpm is down to 57. I am not really feeling any symptoms other than a slight headache at the end of the day. Patio stones all finished at the front and just need to get the sand. Back patio needs to be done but I have already put in 51 minutes of exercise today at 10: 30 am and at least another 50 minutes do happen with calisthenics and my run. I will do the back patio tomorrow likely. It is just a one day task.

I made custard today which tasted good when I came in from working on the patio stones. Must get to the H11 subclades.

No cleaning today

I only clean Monday, Wednesday and Friday as it means dust only three days a week in the air. But I will likely complete the cleaning of the bricks in the front. Then we need to get play sand and hardening sand to complete the task. Perhaps I will get the car vacuumed and washed on the weekend in between the rain storms.

Still no time to work on the haplogroups of H11 but likely that will happen today. Thursday is a rest day.

Day number three - COVID-19 Vaccination Two

No soreness in the arm at all. Slight headache by evening but I had a pretty busy day with working outside on the bricks and cleaning one floor inside. The effect on my respiration is gone as my bpm is down to 57 this evening even after 30 minutes of exercise although I did not run the entire time just the first ten minutes. I did 154 minutes of exercise today with the cleaning of the bricks and the first floor.

Busy day yesterday

Yesterday was a really busy day. Today I plan to work on the other side of the laneway to clear the bricks. That has become a usual task these past few years which we did together until a couple of years ago. My cleaning days are Monday, Wednesday and Friday so today is the main floor. Usually I get quite a bit of my work done in the mornings and can then have some time on the computer in the afternoon.

There is still a lot to plan but I need my daughters and I to think about where to bury Edward and I. That is prominent in my mind in some ways; in other ways I avoid it because I am not yet ready to bury Edward. I can realize that in this modern era we do have the ability to choose which wasn't there for our grandparents. Their deaths were harsh and quick and the grief was more difficult as you did not have the luxury of time to absorb the loss.

Still trying to make time to do the H11 subclades for the newsletter and hopefully by the end of the week.

My husband was a man with many hobbies

Edward had so many hobbies. He was busy every minute of his waking day working at something that he enjoyed doing which included gardening. He was sad when he could no longer garden like he used to. I did try to do the gardening and continue doing that but I was never that good at it. Fortunately I am slow at pulling out weeds so managed to not destroy very many plants. The Black Walnut was, in a way, a godsend because it limited his gardening and switched him to hosta under that tree which manages itself mostly. Today I finished one side of the brickwork along the side of the laneway. The other side to do and I need to get two kinds of sand - play sand and hardening sand - to fill in the cracks between. Probably I need to have the lane way repaved one of these days. I am wondering about doing big squares of brick in perhaps a good colour to fit beside the bricks - might not work will have to see.

Working on his Ham Radio equipment these days as he wanted that to be donated back to the Ham Radio Club here so that someone who wanted equipment but couldn't afford it would have his equipment. I never could gather interest in Ham Radio (talking to people is an effort on my part at the best of times and actually going out of my way is not a likely event). However, I did learn morse code which I found quite fascinating when I was a teenager. It is such an organized tool for transmission. I liked semaphore as well. Anything that was organized and needed to be memorized was my kind of interest. At eight I could recite all of the names and dates of the Kings and Queens of England from Alfred the Great on. My grandfather felt that was a necessary tool for every child to know but then he still thought of Canada as the colony! But that was way back in the early 50s; a long long time ago now.

The next item to work on is his Camera Equipment. He wanted me to call a Camera Club but I have no idea on that. He belonged to the Amateur Radio Club but not a camera club here in Ottawa. After consulting with my children we are going to donate what he hasn't already given to the Princeton Museum to the Salvation Army. They do such good work and if they can make any money off of his equipment more power to them. Edward owned several hundred cameras from quite ancient to modern. He bought his first digital camera for about $1500. He was keen to own one but thought the price was rather huge so I said you can afford it and you want it so why not have it. He bought it and we still have that one although now an antique in the digital world.

When he was a little boy there wasn't any spare money as his mother was widowed from the time that he was two years of age. They did not have a car until his older brother bought one when he was sixteen (he was eight years older than Ed). The only way they went anywhere was with a relative driving a car or by bus into Brantford to go to the dentist. The doctor was just around the corner from his house in Princeton. His mother used to take them on holiday to Port Dover but again by bus once a year for a week. His desire to travel anywhere that he could drive was perhaps driven by that early lack of going anywhere perhaps. We spent hours and hours driving hither and yon to see a particular plaque or building or arboretum or historic site or historic Church of his ancestors - this was a particular joy and we spent a lot of time in graveyards all over Eastern and Central Canada as well as the Maritimes and some in Quebec as well and that doesn't include all of the graveyards that we visited in the Eastern United States. .

His mother had a postcard binder which he carried on with and there are now four postcard binders which we will give to his niece since his mother started it and she is the eldest grand daughter.

Second day of vaccination

No soreness in the arm today. By evening last night I did have a headache and my arm was a bit sore but today no soreness. I notice my resting heart rate has increased from 58 to 62 bpm. Other than that I do not appear to have a reaction yet other than what one would expect from a vaccination. My resting heart rate is generally around 52 or 53 but has been elevated since March somewhat. Grief does show up in different ways it would appear.

Today we are taking several boxes of VHS tapes and DVDs to Salvation Army along with three bags of household items that have been stacked up for about six months - mostly pillows. Can not think why we had so many pillows but they will help other people. The tapes and DVDs have also been boxed up for quite a while. It will be good to have Salvation Army open again. We also have a couple of boxes of books that were my fathers. Many have not seen the light of day for a while now. He liked Zane Grey as I recall one set.

We found Edward's genealogical DVD set and will get those recorded for donation to the OGS Ottawa Branch as well. He did like to have lots of reference material close at hand and made good use of all of it.

Backed up my computer yesterday as I had not done that for nearly a year. Time passes both quickly and slowly. Edward backed up his computer in early February as he did every beginning of the month.

Today I shall also work on the bricks along the side of the laneway. Outside work never diminishes; if anything it multiplies very quickly if you do not keep a handle on it.

Need to work on the subclades of H11 as well; I do want to complete that task by the end of the week. Then I shall think about a combined issue of the Pincombe Newsletter for March and June. I have not thought about the subject matter for those two issues other than continuing the transcription of the North Molton Parish Registers. Perhaps I should consider publishing Bishop Nympton next along with North Molton.

Not Just Tourists is a marvelous volunteer organization

I was introduced to the "Not Just Tourists" volunteer group by the palliative coordinator at CCAC. I had a very large cardboard box full of bandaging material that had been for Edward when he was home-nursed by CCAC. MOHLTC does not permit this material back into the system so it is donated around the world which is a wonderful idea as well. This donation went to Cuba. But they also do health care supplies and so I donated Edward's three walkers (we had one on each floor finally), his bath chair and a super pole for support when taking showers. He used them all and would be happy that I have donated them to some place where there is a need for them. His hospital bed was already donated and the Chair Lift is on the list for donation and waiting for a person who has need of such a device but can not afford to purchase one. Edward loved his Chair Lift and it made the difference between his carrying on with a normal routine and not doing so. He continued with his Chair Lift right up until he was hospitalized in March although we had to help him the last couple of months.

Day 1 - COVID-19 Vaccination Number 2

One of the 20% now with 2nd COVID-19 shot and it is Day 1. Interestingly arm is not sore; thought it might be but the first shot was similar; a bit sore that first night after shot but fine in the morning. We should really see those 2nd shot numbers climb this week and hopefully the first shot numbers will reach 75% or higher of the Canadian population by the end of the week.

Will see if I have any side effects from this second dose. Today I shall work on the subclades of Haplogroup H11.

H11 newsletter preparation continues

It will be a major task to rework the subclades so likely this newsletter will take me into the end of this week before publishing.

Sunday - an entire week has passed

This week simply flew by. We had a couple of projects that we wanted to accomplish and did do that. We are in Stage 1 of reopening but we are being very cautious. Delta variant is all across Canada now apparently. I get my second COVID-19 shot today and then four weeks to full protection. Caution is advised by the PHAC. We will follow their guidelines.

Spent part of yesterday cleaning the bricks along the laneway. This is the usual time of the year for doing that. I have been doing it alone now for several years. Thinking about it the gardening has been my project now for the last ten years although Edward got stronger by 2014 and was back to some gardening but he tired and would sit on the swing or his chair and watch the birds at the feeder. It will take me a couple of days to clean all the bricks of grass and debris. I used to do it in one day but this year I am spreading it out. I am stronger than I was but I still tire.

Today our Church Service is the National Indigenous Day of Prayer. St Albans, la Communaute de St-Bernard a l'Eglise St-Alban and St Luke are part of the combined worship service. I will worship at 10:30 am as usual. I did begin a little early and thankyou to everyone for bringing this service into my home via You-Tube.

We have outlined our next projects that Edward had wanted completed - he was active in the Ham Radio Club so we are gathering up all of that equipment to give to them (if they want it) or otherwise it will go to electronic recycling. The second project is his Camera Collection. Most of this has already been placed elsewhere but what is left we will donate to the Salvation Army as there are other collectors out there and still some interesting pieces are here although the best is gone for sure.

Sometimes I think I should keep everything as it was but he didn't want that and so I should not follow that inclination. He wanted his grandsons to develop their own interests and there are still a lot of his hobbies that they could pick up if they want. He never gave any direction on some things.

Another blessed Sunday and it is a beautiful day.

As I work away

Doing the newsletters has been a path forward for me. In the morning I tend to have a crying moment as I open the blind to let the sun in for the flowers around Edward's urn. We still want him to be with us in reality and it is going to take a longer time for us to let him go. He was the dynamic centre of our lives; he came up with the interesting ideas and events that we all took ourselves away from our working endeavours and joined in with him enthusiastically. Our ideas are more work oriented; it is just the way that we are. But he too was more work oriented but growing up in a small village he loved to explore and from that grew his great ideas!

Working on his last wish; to donate his books to the Ottawa Branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society; kept us going for quite a while but our boxing up of books is complete. Still having the boxes with us makes the task feel incomplete since we were to donate them not box them up and keep them. COVID-19 as always complicates life. We did find his Historical/Genealogical DVD collection yesterday working through another storage area and I will list them today for OGS to decide on whether they can join the collection. Edward liked to have everything at his fingertips as he worked his way through his family tree adding in cousins all along the way. Having these original documents now on DVD helped to make his task easier. He would like that for everyone else as they pursue their family lines back through time. It is also such good advertisement for authors and DVD creators letting people know that such material exists and can be purchased.

Does one ever really get over the grief of losing a partner? We are watching Penquin Town on Netflix. Birds always have such a strong partner bond. We have had two pairs of cardinals at our bird feeder for a number of years now. They come back every year. One wonders can we know that it is the same mating pair? They have just become so familiar now that I do think it is the same two pair. Their bonds are incredible. The male swoops in to make sure the path is clear for his mate and then she comes in much more timidly. Then when the nesting time is on they come one by one with the female always more cautious as she moves down the fence line to the bird feeder.

Yesterday a female blue jay was an amazing sight as she worked on the sunflower seeds. She would pick one up and then take it over to the fence and crack it open with her beak and then back for another single sunflower seed. The male was in the tree watching overhead while his mate ate.

The bonding between people is the same I rather think. Until 2011 I never really went to many meetings with Edward but after that I always went. He had shown a sign of weakness with his need for the pacemaker that I felt needed watching and so I was always there when I could be just to make sure he did not over do it. I know he is safe with God now and so I am gradually returning to my research. I do want to publish all the transcriptions that I have done. It is a slow process as I did a lot long before I thought of publishing them.

I still have a lot of wills to transcribe as well; probably around 1400. My days will still be full once I feel that I have satisfied all of Edward's requests in the immediate time.

I have decided to stay where I am for three more years. I think that I will work on a three year plan as I move along. We were working on a five year plan - by 80 (in two years that would have been Edward) we planned on selling and moving. I am 75 almost 76 so about the same time frame for me in terms of moving. I feel the need to stay here for awhile as we decide where to bury Edward and myself in the future. He did have a thought but I am not sure that it is really us who should decide; I am leaving it up to our children to make that decision.

Working on the H11 newsletter

And the next newsletter is the H11 which is Volume 4 Issue 1 2021 which was due 1st February 2021. This one I do not publish in full to my blog as I do a breakdown on the subclades. It can only be seen on the H11 website.

There are 366 members now but this continues to be a fraction of the number of H11 who have tested at FT DNA.

1.    COVID-19
Over a year since the first lockdown here in Canada and we remain mostly in a state of lock-down although have just entered into Stage 1 of opening. Our borders remain closed and that included the provincial borders for a while although opening up soon. I will always blame COVID-19 for my husband’s death although he did actually die from a chronic illness. It was exacerbated by his inability to follow his normal patterns of life which included a lot of walking around stores both morning and afternoon. At home he just didn’t feel like walking just for the sake of walking around the house. He badly needed to do that to keep up his muscle strength. He did bike but only once a day and just a short time. Trying to persuade him to do that three or four times a day was impossible unfortunately. The hardest thing I have ever done is watch my beloved husband slowly fade. His mind stayed bright and active for most of the time but gradually it too eroded and sadly he passed away on the 10th of April. It has taken me these two months to accept his death and will take a longer time to really learn to live my life without my partner of 54.5+ years. He will always be in my thoughts, in my mind and whenever I do any work I will remember how much he loved doing his genealogy. At first I thought I could not come back but I am struggling to find my own path.

2.    Blake Pedigree Chart – Blake Museum at Bridgwater, Somerset and these charts are on their website (note the new location of this particular set of charts): https://www.bridgwatermuseum.org.uk/museum-collections/blake-family-tree.htm

I have published items from all ten charts on the website.  Part 2 has always interested me because it refers to the Hampshire Blake family. Interestingly this family has come under more scrutiny in the last thirty years with the marriage of HRH Charles, Prince of Wales and Lady Diana Spencer, Princess of Wales. In the published genealogy (The Ancestry of Diana Princess of Wales for Twelve Generations, Richard K Evans, NEHGS, 2007) for Diana, Princess of Wales, the twelfth generation contains a rather interesting couple Thomas Blake and Eleanor (Hall) Blake. Thomas Blake is said to be of Easton Town near Andover Hampshire and Eleanor Hall of Bradford, Wiltshire. Chart 2 has an erroneous beginning as far as can be determined. This particular information was either used by or created by Horatio Gates Somerby depending upon the date of this chart’s creation. A chart produced by the College of Arms has a somewhat clearer picture of this family at Hampshire although it too appears to have a couple of entries that do not fit the wills.

The Visitation of Surrey 1662-8 has an interesting chart:

This particular visitation does list Thomas Blake married to Elinor Hall. Most of the visitations list Sir William Blake of Kensington as the son of John Blake. Another interesting Blake Chart was located in the Survey of London, Volume 17 (The Village of Highgate, St Pancras, Part I) and published by the London County Council, The County Hall, London, SE 1936, Page 148.

The Genealogical Tree for Diana, Princess of Wales does not have entries past Thomas Blake and Eleanor Hall as they were the twelfth generation. He does move forward to Thomas Blake of Essington (Essington does appear to be an error that crept in as this family lived at Easton Town) and his sons Thomas and Richard. Left out of this chart is his daughter Mary Blake who married William Newland and the surname Blake disappears from the Pedigree of Diana, Princess of Wales as the Newland line marries into the Manley line and then to the Gore line as the Blake DNA travels down through the female line. Colonel John Gore married Bellamira Munbee and their son Vice Admiral Sir John Gore married Georgina Montagu. Their daughter Anne Francis Gore married Richard William Penn Curzon, the 1st Earl Howe. Their daughter Lady Mary Anna Curzon-Howe married James Hamilton, 2nd Duke of Abercorn. Their son James Albert Edward Hamilton, 3rd Duke of Abercorn married Lady Rosaline Cecilia Caroline Bingham. Their daughter Lady Cynthia Elinor Beatrix Hamilton married Albert Edward John Spencer, 7th Earl Spencer. Their son Edward John Spencer, 8th Earl Spencer married the Honourable Frances Ruth Burke Roche. Their daughter was Lady Diana Frances Spencer married to HRH Charles, Prince of Wales.

3.    Blake Surname Study – Progress

Still in the process of redoing the classification of the kits. Hopefully I will get back to this in the Fall.

4.    Blake Autosomal Study at FT DNA (Family Finder)

Useful on an individual basis but I can not report on matching as that would interfere in the privacy of the individual members. In some cases these are large matches and in other cases relatively small but that is the way with the inheritance of autosomal DNA. With each generation chunks of autosomal DNA can either be broken into smaller units or passed as a large chunk relatively intact. It is a purely random event. Due to privacy concerns it is not possible to produce a chart of the members who do have matches with other members of the group but each member is able to check that for themselves in their account. What would be helpful is adding a family tree to your account thus making it much more possible to find matching autosomal DNA cousins in your research.

5.    Andover, Hampshire, England, Parish Registers

Andover, Hampshire, England has often been said to be the “home of the Blakes” when I have been writing to people in Hampshire through the years. I would say that Calne, Wiltshire perhaps has a stronger hold on that particular title although there are a number of other areas in England where the Blake family has been for centuries. When I decided to transcribe the Parish Registers of Andover I was surprised to find that yes there are a number of Blake entries but there are far more Blake entries in Parish Registers in other parts of England as mentioned. In this issue, I will publish the baptisms for Blake in the Parish Registers. These records are taken from fiche which have scans of the original parish registers. The registers for baptisms begin in 1588 and have provided me with a lot of details on the Blake family in Andover in the late 1500s and into the 1600s/1700s. Eventually I hope to complete my project of transcribing these Parish Registers for St Marys Andover beyond the early to mid 1700s.

Baptismal Registers commenced in 1588 and I will start publishing these transcriptions for Andover.
