Nicholas Blake testator in this will mentions a number of his relatives and their children which is always helpful. One of his brothers is Stephen (deceased) with sons Edmond, Nicholas and Stephen and daughter Elizabeth Hatherill (widow). He also mentions a Nicholas Blake his kinsman of Wootton Rivers who also has a son Nicholas. I wonder what manors were at Wootton Rivers and whether Nicholas Blake can be tracked in the manor papers. He isn't wealthy but he is a yeoman. He also mentions another cousin Katherine Edington.
Since his brother in law is Geoffrey Winter, perhaps his wife was Elizabeth Winter.
Wootton Rivers is 16 miles NW of Andover Hampshire, 19 miles NNE of South Newton, and 14 miles ESE of Calne. A rather interesting spot to be in roughly half way between Calne and Andover.
There is a will for Jeffery Wynter/Winter yeoman of Wootton Rivers probated 3 Feb 1620 which might prove interesting for this family.
The entry that I am finding that might be interesting for this Blake family at Wootton Rivers is labeled Ludgershall (Wootton Rivers is 9 miles NNW of Ludgershall). There is a burial for Katherine Edington at Ludgershall 24 Jul 1644 (wife of Edward Edington).
There is a baptism for Elizabeth Blake daughter of Steven Blake at Warminster (Saint Denys 22 Apr 1609 C15334-2 Family Search) which might seem rather distant at 23 miles WSW of Wootton Rivers.

Will of John Blake, clothier of Deveril Longbridge - The National Archives PROB 11/27/321, probated 12 Sep 1538
John Blake Clothier at Deverill Longbridge gives us quite a bit of detail in his will. He has three daughters Alice, Margaret and Philip and he has three sons Thomas, William, and John. He doesn't mention his wife so we are left to assume she has died.
Deverill Longbridge is just 2.4 miles south of Warminster in Wiltshire. We know there are Blakes at Warminster from two earlier wills:

William Blake in the first will does not mention any siblings and he has a large family with daughters Elizabeth and Angnes and sons Harry, Stephen, Thomas, William and John and is probated in 1539.
Thomas Blake in the second will has a brother William who lives at The Ashes/Ashyes and Thomas has children: John, Edward, Barbara and Edith. This will is probated in 1584 and perhaps this Thomas and William are the sons of William Blake in the first will.
However John Blake Clothier is likely a contemporary of William Blake since they both leave their wills at the end of the 1530s. Neither of them mention siblings but it is interesting that they live in close proximity to each other at the same time.
There is a will for Thomas Ashelock, clothier of Heytesbury, Wiltshire probated 14 Nov 1557 (PROB 11/39/524). Heytesbury is 3.7 miles WSW of Longbridge Deverill and 3.5 miles WNW of Warminster. Interesting that he is also a Clothier and Tutor to his sons. He has outlived this John Blake by nineteen years so it is hard to say if his will will add to my knowledge of this Blake family.

Will of John Blake, yeoman of Stoverd South Newton - National Archives PROB 11/174/183, probated 20 May 1637
I had hoped that by transcribing all the earlier wills that I have for the Blake family at South Newton I might be able to place this present will for John Blake at Stoverd South Newton. He refers to himself as John the elder so one of his grandchildren is perhaps a John Blake or is he the elder in a group of cousins and we know that in 1616 there was a John Blake son of Maud (from her will) and a John Blake son of Robert Blake (from the will of Maud) or are there simply two John Blakes in the area and one has been named elder and the other presumably younger.

The Blake family at South Newton and the testator is John Blake married to Agnes. Maud Blake names her sons Henry, Severan, John and Robert. She states that Robert Blake has sons Thomas and John (not Maud's son Robert). William Blake has son Henry and Henry Blake has sons William and Henry.
This John (testator) has sons Thomas and Robert and daughter Joane Bigges. He has many grandchildren with only a few named - Thomas has seven children, Robert has two children, Joane Bigges has a son Anthony and other children not named or counted.
There was a Joane Bigges buried 10 Apr 1646 (B00190-2 Family Search Patron entry).
There are a lot of Blake families at South Newton. We know that a William Blake has sons John and Charles according to his will probated 1610.

Will of Marmaduke Blake, Yeoman of Porton, Idmiston - The National Archives PROB 11/122/137, probated 10 Aug 1613
Marmaduke Blake is the testator in this current will and his will was probated 10 Aug 1613. I have mentioned Marmaduke Blake in an earlier blog because this name was listed in the Hampshire Record Office catalogue:

Inventory of Marmaduke Blake, parish not given, 1581 ADE /07 probated 1581 so is perhaps a relative of the current testator. I was mistaken in thinking I had the will of this individual rather I have this one for Marmaduke in Wiltshire and 1613. There is also a will held by the Swindon and Wiltshire Record office probated 1611 P2/B/320 and labeled Marmaduke Blake, Yeoman at Idmiston (not yet scanned and available for purchase). Given that this will was initially written in 1611 it perhaps went to the lower court first and because it overlapped Ecclesiastical lower courts was moved to the PCC.
Porton Wiltshire is a chapelry in the parish of Idmiston, hundred of Alderbury about 6 miles NE of Salisbury. Porton is 7 miles ENE of South Newton and nine miles NW of Lockerley Hampshire and interestingly enough 12 miles WSW of Upper Clatford. Until I came across the forename Marmaduke at Lockerley in the wills list I had never seen this forename in the Blake family.
There was a Marmaduke Blake baptized 21 May 1629 at Idmiston Wiltshire son of William Blake (C15211-1 Family Search) and 21 Jun 1688 at Idmiston Wiltshire son of John and Martha Blake (C15211-1 Family Search).

Will of John Blake - National Archives PROB 11/14/155, probated 24 Apr 1504
This will written by John Blake in 1504 is often quoted and this John is the son of Robert Blake and Avis Wallop. We know that John is 40 years or more old when his mother's estate was examined under Inquisition Post Mortem circa 1474 so he was born circa 1434 or earlier. In 1504 he would have been at least 70 years old. John was married twice and he did not leave any male heirs carrying the Blake surname. Part of the fascination for me in all of this aside from information for my one name study of the Blake family is that he lived at the time that the father of Nicholas Blake at Enham lived. Living at Nether Wallop he was only seven miles south west of Andover and we passed through the area of the Wallops on our way to Upper Clatford (1 mile south of Andover or in truth just on the opposite side of the highway these days). There is Nether Wallop and one mile to the north west is Middle Wallop and two miles to the north west is Over Wallop. Then six miles to the north east is Goodworth Clatford and also Upper Clatford which are two continuous villages - you leave the one as you enter the other. As we drove these lanes I could imagine my great grandfather walking from his home to work each day as he did all of his life. Looking at the picture of him from 1898 I can see from whom I inherited my strabismus (lazy eye syndrome) for there it is forever captured in picture the one eye wandering about on its own whilst the other is fixed on you the viewer. Inherited by me from my father. My grandfather did not have strabismus but did pass it on to his son.
His brother Robert acquires Penhills by this will (although not mentioned except in the line where it was said that Richard Dauntsey would inherit the properties in Southampton and Wiltshire with some exceptions and this was one of the exceptions) and it stays with this family up into the reign of Charles I when it was destroyed by the Royalists. A smaller manor was built from the original stones at Pinhills and the Blake family continued to live there into the 1700s.
This family can trace back on paper to the Blake family that is on the 1286 subsidy for Wiltshire and on the Pedigree Chart which is held by the Swindon Wiltshire Record Office. This rather large document (12 feet long by 4 feet wide) was commissioned by the Blake family in London, England to record their family line and was produced using primarily the Visitations but also other documents which I have not yet been able to determine. The College of Arms holds the original material for this chart and one day I will investigate the cost of receiving copies of the documents used. The College of Arms is located near St Paul's Cathedral in London just up from the London Millennium Footbridge. Something that should not be missed when visiting London is crossing on foot all of these bridges and wandering down both sides of the Thames River. The most we ever did was 18,000 steps per day and that took us from our hotel just south of Waterloo Station up into London and along the Thames to St Pauls Cathedral and back across the Thames and down into Bermondsey and then back to our hotel. A wonderful walk and we took about ten hours in total with lots of interesting stops along the way. You can take the Underground and it is a must to go to Kew, the Museums, Greenwich but to be in the City of London or Westminster the best way is to go on foot.
The Blake Pedigree Chart does have a male descendant for John Blake (son of Robert Blake and Avis Wallop). He is named David on the chart and was the son of his first wife Margaret Dyncham/Dinham/Denham. David married Joane Mallet and they had two children John Blake Abbot of Cirencester, Gloucester and William who married Margaret Browne of Wablyn. William and Margaret had two sons Martin who married Catherine Vaughan of Herefordshire and John who is said to be the ancestor of the Somerset Blake family and that Lord High Admiral Robert Blake was one of his descendants.
Robert Blake and Avis Wallop had seven children according to the Visitation. Their son Robert married Margaret Inglefield and their two children Roger and Anne married into the Baynard family. Roger married Mary Baynard. Roger and Mary are said to have a son William Blake of Eastontown who married Avice Ripley it is this William that I have been most interested in from the viewpoint of my own family at Andover/Upper Clatford. I am not entirely convinced that he is a son of Roger Blake and Mary Baynard. Roger only mentions his eldest son and his youngest daughter in his will however. These two items David a son of John Blake and William son of Roger and Mary Baynard must have other supporting documentation which I shall one day attempt to see. Their children of Robert Blake and Avis Wallop on the Visitation (Wiltshire Visitation Pedigrees 1623):

Gilbert and Alexander both died without heirs. This visitation principally looks at Robert Blake descendants. Henry Blake is the individual living in 1623 at Pennells and just to place this manor it is to the WSW of Calne about 1 mile. That means it is about 29 miles from Nether Wallop (where John was to be buried) to Calne. John doesn't say in his will where he is located when he is writing his will.
John does mention his nephew Roger (son of his brother Robert although not as nephew but he is). He does mention his servants Robert Blake yeoman and John Blake (currently his servant). Servant could mean a number of things I suspect in those days. They could have been in training with him. It is just so close to Andover and Eastontown (where William Blake lived) from NetherWallop - only seven miles. Reading through the Inquisitions Post Mortem may assist with understanding the Blake family in this area even better.
Wallop is the area in which John's mother Avis Wallop lived. In the Post Mortem following her death in 1474 National Archives C 140/48/6 which I shall either purchase or have a look at when we are next there, the land that was feoffed to her and her daughter by her first husband was mentioned as well as John Blake her son being 40 years of age or more. Reading through this document could be quite interesting but the Inquisition Post Mortem for John might add more details for the Blake family.

These documents were inquiries as the title indicates and were issued by the local "escheator" (official responsible for taking possession of the estate). These include date, names of manors held and details of service and also name, age and relationship of the heir or coheir. The letter code WARD refers to records where the heir was a minor. I plan to look at these document when next at Kew.

His brother Robert acquires Penhills by this will (although not mentioned except in the line where it was said that Richard Dauntsey would inherit the properties in Southampton and Wiltshire with some exceptions and this was one of the exceptions) and it stays with this family up into the reign of Charles I when it was destroyed by the Royalists. A smaller manor was built from the original stones at Pinhills and the Blake family continued to live there into the 1700s.
This family can trace back on paper to the Blake family that is on the 1286 subsidy for Wiltshire and on the Pedigree Chart which is held by the Swindon Wiltshire Record Office. This rather large document (12 feet long by 4 feet wide) was commissioned by the Blake family in London, England to record their family line and was produced using primarily the Visitations but also other documents which I have not yet been able to determine. The College of Arms holds the original material for this chart and one day I will investigate the cost of receiving copies of the documents used. The College of Arms is located near St Paul's Cathedral in London just up from the London Millennium Footbridge. Something that should not be missed when visiting London is crossing on foot all of these bridges and wandering down both sides of the Thames River. The most we ever did was 18,000 steps per day and that took us from our hotel just south of Waterloo Station up into London and along the Thames to St Pauls Cathedral and back across the Thames and down into Bermondsey and then back to our hotel. A wonderful walk and we took about ten hours in total with lots of interesting stops along the way. You can take the Underground and it is a must to go to Kew, the Museums, Greenwich but to be in the City of London or Westminster the best way is to go on foot.
The Blake Pedigree Chart does have a male descendant for John Blake (son of Robert Blake and Avis Wallop). He is named David on the chart and was the son of his first wife Margaret Dyncham/Dinham/Denham. David married Joane Mallet and they had two children John Blake Abbot of Cirencester, Gloucester and William who married Margaret Browne of Wablyn. William and Margaret had two sons Martin who married Catherine Vaughan of Herefordshire and John who is said to be the ancestor of the Somerset Blake family and that Lord High Admiral Robert Blake was one of his descendants.
Robert Blake and Avis Wallop had seven children according to the Visitation. Their son Robert married Margaret Inglefield and their two children Roger and Anne married into the Baynard family. Roger married Mary Baynard. Roger and Mary are said to have a son William Blake of Eastontown who married Avice Ripley it is this William that I have been most interested in from the viewpoint of my own family at Andover/Upper Clatford. I am not entirely convinced that he is a son of Roger Blake and Mary Baynard. Roger only mentions his eldest son and his youngest daughter in his will however. These two items David a son of John Blake and William son of Roger and Mary Baynard must have other supporting documentation which I shall one day attempt to see. Their children of Robert Blake and Avis Wallop on the Visitation (Wiltshire Visitation Pedigrees 1623):

Gilbert and Alexander both died without heirs. This visitation principally looks at Robert Blake descendants. Henry Blake is the individual living in 1623 at Pennells and just to place this manor it is to the WSW of Calne about 1 mile. That means it is about 29 miles from Nether Wallop (where John was to be buried) to Calne. John doesn't say in his will where he is located when he is writing his will.
John does mention his nephew Roger (son of his brother Robert although not as nephew but he is). He does mention his servants Robert Blake yeoman and John Blake (currently his servant). Servant could mean a number of things I suspect in those days. They could have been in training with him. It is just so close to Andover and Eastontown (where William Blake lived) from NetherWallop - only seven miles. Reading through the Inquisitions Post Mortem may assist with understanding the Blake family in this area even better.
Wallop is the area in which John's mother Avis Wallop lived. In the Post Mortem following her death in 1474 National Archives C 140/48/6 which I shall either purchase or have a look at when we are next there, the land that was feoffed to her and her daughter by her first husband was mentioned as well as John Blake her son being 40 years of age or more. Reading through this document could be quite interesting but the Inquisition Post Mortem for John might add more details for the Blake family.

These documents were inquiries as the title indicates and were issued by the local "escheator" (official responsible for taking possession of the estate). These include date, names of manors held and details of service and also name, age and relationship of the heir or coheir. The letter code WARD refers to records where the heir was a minor. I plan to look at these document when next at Kew.

Will of William Blake of Chilhampton, South Newton - SWRO P2/8Reg/125B, probated 1 Jun 1610
The last will of this series from the Swindon and Wiltshire Record Office.
The will of William Blake of Chilhampton South Newton names his sons John and Charles Blake and his daughters Edith, Dorathie, Anconett, Agnis, and Margaret. As I work on this will I realize I have not yet posted the will of Maud Blake although I did post it yesterday. They are in the same hand writing not that that is particularly significant but it is interesting. Maud is not the wife of William because she doesn't have any daughters and has sons Henry, Severan (sp), John and Robert. She does mention Charles as one of her overseers and perhaps he is this Charles who is a son of this William.
There was another image for a probate for a William Blake in 1616 again in the same handwriting as the will of this William and Maud. The probate doesn't offer much information other than that the William Blake lived at Ambrosbury and that is widow is Joanne Blake. Ambresbury/Ambrosbury was an earlier name for Amesbury which is 7 miles north of Salisbury so again the same general area and 7 miles north east of South Newton.

I had said that there was some debate as to the age of her daughters in the post on her will although I felt John might be 21 years of age and it is likely that all are of age which seems logical since no one was named as guardian in her will. This William mentions his children's children so already he is in his 40s likely at the time of the writing of the will and hence born in the latter part of the 1400s which is very interesting. The daughter Alys is perhaps the wife of (unknown) Longtree and will check that out in Family Search. Agnes had mentioned only John, Syblye and Elizabeth directly as her children but also she gave items to Agnes and Jane Style, to Edythe Hyll and to Alys Longtree.
No probate given for this will. This is another William Blake to look at in this time period and he is a contemporary with my ancestor Nicholas Blake living at Enham Hampshire. His will is dated 1545 and Nicholas' will was dated 1547. To which Blake families do all these men belong? It is a mystery. In this case it is 26 miles from Martin to Andover (or 42 kilometres depending on preference) and that is as the crow flies using the old road (which is a fascinating drive through the Wallops) is 30 miles. and both are in the case of Martin 32 miles from Calne and in the case of Andover 27 miles from Calne. One of my tasks that I have assigned myself is to draw circles at 10 miles, 20 miles etc on a map around Calne and note the Blake families living in the areas covered in the 1400s, 1500s and 1600s.

Will of William Blake of Warminster - SWRO P2/1Reg/1B, probated 8 Mar 1539 (old style)
A second Blake will at Warmister in this group of wills. In total there are ten wills/admon for Blake members at Warminster with this particular one being the oldest and it is for William Blake probated in 1539. The next will there is for Henry Blake in 1571, followed by the will of Thomas Blake in 1584. Then a jump to 1626 with a will for Henry Blake and 1639 a will for John Blake (yeoman). Then a will for a William Blake circa 1688 and followed by a will for William Blake Grocer 1702 (and another for a William Blake in 1701). I only hold these two wills from the Swindon and Wiltshire Record Office.
This is the oldest will in this group of wills from the Swindon and Wiltshire Record Office. I acquired them a number of years ago but have not transcribed them or actually even read them in all this time. I had hoped that they would reveal more about the early Blake family in Wiltshire and in some ways they have done so. Linking some of them together has been a bonus.

This Blake family at Warminster consists of Thomas and his wife Agnes and their children John (over 21), Edward, Barbara and Edith all under 21 years of age as of 28 Jul 1584. It would appear that Thomas' mother remarried as he mentions two fathers in lawe Symon Sloper and John Benett. His brother is William Blake.
Warminster is 8 miles SW of Erlestoke, 18 miles SSW of Calne and 15 miles WNW of South Newton.
From Ancestry I found an Edeth Blake baptized 23 Jul 1584 at Warminster and daughter of Thomas Blake. There is an Edward Blake baptized 19 Jun 1583 at Warminster and son of Thomas Blake. There is also a John Blake baptized 30 Oct 1579 at Warminster but the will implies that John is over 21 years of age. This is perhaps another family as there was also a John baptized 8 Oct 1572 and a William baptized 17 Mar 1573 both at Warminster and sons of Thomas Blake. Thee may be the children of Thomas Blake and Agnes Grinfealde married 27 Sep 1569 at Warminster - interesting but he mentions fathers in law of Sloper and Benett. Surprisingly there are only 27 Blake members listed in the 1841 census at Warminster.

William Blake (one of the witnesses and brother to the testator) lives at The Ashes. There was a Council letter from the towne and hundred of Warminster to the Earl of Pembroke dated 28 July 1588 in which one finds the following for the militia that a muskett was to be carried by William Harris of Warminster and furnished by Mr. Blake of the Ashes. This was, of course, in preparation for the arrival of the Spanish Armada. What a delightful piece of history to add to the Blake family story.

Another comment in The history of Warminster by John Jeremiah Daniell (printed 1879) and on page 643 "In anticipation of the invasion of England by the Spaniards, Beacons were erected on all commanding elevations. There was one on cley Hill for giving the alarm to Warminster, and the neighbourhood. Instructions were issued to the Constables of the Hundred to provide that the Beacon on Cley Hill "" be well and sufficiently furnished with good and dry wood, and a barrel in which pitch hath been, besides 5 or 6 lbs. of pitch; "" a watchman was to be appointed, who should be an able man, both of body and discretion, to look well after the Beacon; and Mr. Carr, the elder, of Corsley, Mr. Blake, of the Ashes, Richard Holwey and Christopher Daniek, of Norridge, Mr. Hobbs, of Bugley, and others of the meetest persons thereabouts, were "" to look after the watchman, and see that the Beacon was well and orderly watched, and fired only on just cause, nor without making the Justices of the Peace and Constables privy thereto.""
Also in The History of Warminster is a list of the Names of Feoffees and Nominators showing that William Blake was feoffee for Asheys and Smallbrook in 1592 and in 1613 William Blake was a nominator and Feoffees included John Blake, Stephen Blake. In 1651 Stephen Blake was a nominator with feoffee William Blake. By 1694 the Blake family has disappeared from this list. This was for the Property which belonged to St Laurence's Chapel and provided relief for the poor of the parish.

Instructions were issued to the Constables of the Hundred to provide that the Beacon on Cley Hill "" be well and sufficiently furnished with good and dry wood, and a barrel in which pitch hath been, besides 5 or 6 lbs. of pitch; "" a watchman was to be appointed, who should be an able man, both of body and discretion, to look well after the Beacon; and Mr. Carr, the elder, of Corsley, Mr. Blake, of the Ashes, Richard Holwey and Christopher Daniek, of Norridge, Mr. Hobbs, of Bugley, and others of the meetest persons thereabouts, were "" to look after the watchman, and see that the Beacon was well and orderly watched, and fired only on just cause, nor without making the Justices of the Peace and Constables privy thereto.""
Also in The History of Warminster is a list of the Names of Feoffees and Nominators showing that William Blake was feoffee for Asheys and Smallbrook in 1592 and in 1613 William Blake was a nominator and Feoffees included John Blake, Stephen Blake. In 1651 Stephen Blake was a nominator with feoffee William Blake. By 1694 the Blake family has disappeared from this list. This was for the Property which belonged to St Laurence's Chapel and provided relief for the poor of the parish.

Maude Blake, widow, tells us a great deal about herself in this will but does not name her husband which would have been helpful She names her children Henry, Severan (possibly), John and Robert. She names Robert Blake with sons Thomas and John, William Blake with sons Henry and daughters Anne, Mary, Henry Blake with sons William and Henry and daughters Gyles and Francis, John Blake with daughters Elizabeth and Anne,
There is a William Blake who married Maude Downe 2 Nov 1591 at Great Wishford, Wiltshire (M15228-1 Family Search). Since Maude is remembering a Robert Blake, a Henry Blake, a John Blake and a William Blake with various children, I wonder who all these men are with respect to her possible husband William Blake.There is a John Blake who married Mawde Heward Nov 1558 at Great Wishford (M15228-1 Family Search) but suspect that that would be too far back as Maude (testator) would likely have been around 20 at marriage or less thus having her born by or after 1538 and hence 78 when her will was written. Not impossible though so worth noting.
In the will of John Blake of Stoweford probated 20 Mar 1572 he names his sons John, William and Thomas with John having sons William and Thomas and Thomas with children unmentioned.
In the Will of John Blake husbandman of South Newton probated 6 Feb 1553/54 he mentions his sons Walter, Gylys, William, Edward and Robert. This testator had as witnesses to his will John Blake the elder and John Blake the younger.
The will of John Blake of Stooloford probated1545/46 has him married to Edyth with two sons Thomas and John. Thomas has a son Robert. The testator mentions Robert Blake carpenter at South Newton but no relationship stated.
This has possibilities in that the Blake males mentioned as sons of Maude were: Robert, William, Henry and John.
Still to come are the wills of Richard Blake, 1572, Thomas Blake 1550, 1565, 1573, 1584, William Blake 1538, 1545, and 1610. This set of wills has actually come along quite well. When I acquired them about eight years ago I found them very difficult reading. They are still difficult as wills in the 15th century seem to be using a different alphabet and language but having done so much in the 1500s and 1600s now I find it easier. Taking a course in Palaeography really worked very well for me.
I can see now that I could have separated these wills into locations and worked on them by year but my tendency is to be logical and so working alphabetically worked very well for me and I can still work back and forth looking at them. The advantage is time; each time I read one of these wills I see something else that helps me to look at them with the thought of finding something common between them. However, one can see that the Blake family at South Newton in particular is very very large in 1641 - 25% of the community roughly and this continues and in 1841 they are about 20% of the community.

Will of Thomas Blake of West Lavington - SWRO P1/1 Reg/28A, probated 26 Feb 1573/74
An interesting will that perhaps a lot of people will find interesting as he must be a merchant of some kind and has provided a list of those who owe money to him and living perhaps primarily in West Lavington. This Thomas Blake is brother to John Blake who left his will at Earlestoke (2.6 miles WNW of West Lavington) which was probated 26 Apr 1574:

Needless to say I was most excited to find this will which links together the Earlestoke and the West Lavington Blake families. Both wills mention their mother Jone/Johane Blake (widow), both mention their sister Agnes and their brothers Robert and John. No distinction is made between the two John Blakes in this family. He has a godson Thomas Dikes. Too bad he doesn't mention the names of his brothers' children.
There was a Robert Blake vicar of Winterborne Monkton from 1561 to 1583 from a plaque in the church: http://www.oodwooc.co.uk/ph_wm_v.htm .
I cannot find him in the Oxford or Cambridge Alumni Rolls nor is he in the Church of England Clergy database. Interesting that he is remembering him and Winterborne Monkton is 14 miles NNE of West Lavington. Perhaps more interestingly Winterborne Monkton is only 7 miles east of Calne Wiltshire. Do these families fit into the Blake family at Calne? Looking at the Pedigree Chart of the Blake family in this time frame we have Roger Blake married to Mary Baynard and Roger died in 1556 at the age of 57 years so born around 1500. His children and grandchildren are contemporary to this time period. He is known to have had a son Thomas who lived at Pynnells married to Edith Ivy, a son John who lived at Hilcot Wiltshire (no further information on his family although he did marry and Hilcot is nine miles north of Winterborne Monkton), a son Robert who lived at Calne but did marry Alice Smyth of Lacock (they had four children Roger, Anthony, Joane and Mary). There is another son claimed for this Roger Blake and Mary Baynard - William Blake married to Avis Ripley and they had several sons namely Peter Blake (Inner Temple did not marry), John married to Margaret Blake and this is not one of the Johns we are looking at), and William. More digging needs to be done in the records of this area particularly the manor records to see the Blake lines that are not on the Pedigree Chart or if not then discovering where these Blake families have their ancient ancestry. Manor Books are a tool I have not utilized a lot yet but do plan on getting into them after I complete my task with wills.

Needless to say I was most excited to find this will which links together the Earlestoke and the West Lavington Blake families. Both wills mention their mother Jone/Johane Blake (widow), both mention their sister Agnes and their brothers Robert and John. No distinction is made between the two John Blakes in this family. He has a godson Thomas Dikes. Too bad he doesn't mention the names of his brothers' children.
There was a Robert Blake vicar of Winterborne Monkton from 1561 to 1583 from a plaque in the church: http://www.oodwooc.co.uk/ph_wm_v.htm .
I cannot find him in the Oxford or Cambridge Alumni Rolls nor is he in the Church of England Clergy database. Interesting that he is remembering him and Winterborne Monkton is 14 miles NNE of West Lavington. Perhaps more interestingly Winterborne Monkton is only 7 miles east of Calne Wiltshire. Do these families fit into the Blake family at Calne? Looking at the Pedigree Chart of the Blake family in this time frame we have Roger Blake married to Mary Baynard and Roger died in 1556 at the age of 57 years so born around 1500. His children and grandchildren are contemporary to this time period. He is known to have had a son Thomas who lived at Pynnells married to Edith Ivy, a son John who lived at Hilcot Wiltshire (no further information on his family although he did marry and Hilcot is nine miles north of Winterborne Monkton), a son Robert who lived at Calne but did marry Alice Smyth of Lacock (they had four children Roger, Anthony, Joane and Mary). There is another son claimed for this Roger Blake and Mary Baynard - William Blake married to Avis Ripley and they had several sons namely Peter Blake (Inner Temple did not marry), John married to Margaret Blake and this is not one of the Johns we are looking at), and William. More digging needs to be done in the records of this area particularly the manor records to see the Blake lines that are not on the Pedigree Chart or if not then discovering where these Blake families have their ancient ancestry. Manor Books are a tool I have not utilized a lot yet but do plan on getting into them after I complete my task with wills.

There are only two wills for the Blake family at Plaitford the one I blogged for Richard Blake probated in 1572 earlier today

and this one for Thomas Blake also husbandman probated in 1565. Thomas mentions his children including Richard, Jone, John and Elizabeth. He also mentions his siblings Nycholas, Robert and Edith. Edith is married to (unknown) Thomas. He has a legacy for a Thomas Blake of Cow[e]sfi[e]ld which is about three miles away but does not mention relationship. There appear to be two brothers called Thomas Blake at Cowsfild as he mentions Thomas and his brother Thomas.
This will is full of interesting details of family items and an especially touching appeal to take care of one of his brothers (Robert) by the next generation. His wife has died before him and he gives some special items of his wifes to his daughter Elizabeth.

This earlier will captures the family in its entirey as Alice only mentions her son William (his son John), Mariam and a general reference to her children's children. Her will dated 20 Oct 1566 is seventeen years later so she has lived a long time after her husband. This family is Thomas and Alice Blake with children William, Johane, John and Maryan. The question of who is Edmund Sowthery is perhaps obvious on a second read and that is Marian was perhaps married to (unknown) Sowthery. So Edmund Sowthery is her grandson. John Blake is a witness to this will of Thomas as he was to Alice Blake's will although Thomas makes William Boldye supervisor.
It is always nice to connect wills and certainly Thomas, William and John continue to be forenames for the Blake family found at South Newton. There are wills for William Blake that might help to continue the linkage.

Plaitford/Platyford is about six miles west of Romsey, Hampshire and 11 miles south east of Salisbury close to the New Forest. My premise is that the Blake family found south of Calne and working their ways towards Salisbury then down to the New Forest and across into Southampton were principally descendant of the Blake family found at Calne in the 1200s and later.
