My siblings and myself (5 in total thus far) have quite a few matches with people whose families emigrated to Newfoundland in the past 300 years from Dorset and Devon. Some of these matches end up looking like 2nd to 4th cousin but in reality are more distant than that since I can not match them up with my known lines. As it turns out, I know my lines in Dorset and Devon back at least to my 4x and 5x great grandparents and further in quite a few of these lines.
Some of these surnames Butt, Jeanes and others are showing up on a regular basis. The Butt line I find especially interesting as a Butt researcher (research below attributed to this researcher for the most part) has traced our mutual lines back to Robert Butt who married Susan Cantrell (baptized 18 Aug 1585 at Winterborne Stickland) 13 Apr 1607 at Winterbourne Stickland, Dorset. All of the lines of these siblings have been traced down by me mostly well into the 1900s thus leading me to deduce that the Butt family which we (my siblings and I) match in Newfoundland must be descended from the earlier branches of this family.
The Winterborne villages in Dorset all lie within a few kilometres of each other. It is a very quiet beautiful piece of Dorset and when we visited there was a low hanging haze over the valley looking down from the Church of St Nicholas at Winterborne Clenstone. Rolling fields stretched away in all directions from this high point. Has it changed very much? I suspect a good deal in some ways as there were more people in this area when my ancestors were there in the 1700s and 1800s and into the early 1900s. The wars perhaps changed that a lot but along with that the mechanization of agriculture rendered all those workers to be no longer needed in the agricultural industries of this area.
Maybe one of these days I will be able to discover our matches with the many Newfoundland families in our kits. Endogamy probably plays a part making the matches seem closer.
Charles Butt was a Methodist Preacher along with his agricultural duties. My grandfather knew this great grandfather of his but mostly from a distance as Charles lived at Turnworth near the end of his life. He did however spend some time with his then over 80 year old great grandfather and shared with me a little of this man who was born in 1801. Amazing the span of years that represents. My grandfather was born in 1875 and I was born in 1945 so I had the opportunity as a child of 8 years of age (the year my grandfather passed away) to listen to stories of a man who lived at the beginning of the 1800s (144 years before I was born). My grandfather liked to talk about how life had changed from then to when he died in 1953.

Arnold Family of Milton Abbas, Dorset
Recently a number of messages on a facebook website and later personal emails have left me with a few thoughts to ponder. Initially I had met the individual involved on the Dorset rootsweb mailing site (about ten years ago) and I had given to her my family tree as known to me for the Arnold family. In retrospect, I think she was just trying to get me to agree that a child born quite a bit later than the siblings of my Hannah Arnold was the illegitimate child of a younger sister of Hannah. I must admit that it crossed my mind but there really has never been any solid proof of that. Now with DNA it could certainly be proven or not as the case may be. My own line is as follows:

At that time the surname of William Arnold's wife was said to be Malton, Elizabeth Malton. Their marriage registration appears below:
It was this marriage registration that convinced me that the spelling of Elizabeth's surname was Molton. She has signed the marriage registration herself. Her husband William has also signed himself and he has managed to leave the d off of his surname. Nevertheless I believe that Elizabeth has given a hint to her ancestors with her signature.
Noting the "a" in Elizabeth and comparing it with the two vowels in the surname and I believe that these are both o's even though the priest has recorded the spelling of her name as Malton. I believe he is incorrect. I think we need to have our eyes open as we investigate our families. Her signature is clear and well formed like someone who writes often.
Because of her signature it was possible to find an Elizabeth Molton of Winterbourne Whitchurch (as mentioned in the registration). There isn't an Elizabeth Malton born in the correct time frame in this area. This was a brick wall for me before I found the marriage registration a few years ago.
Parents of Elizabeth appear to be William Molton (likely baptized 2nd August 1743 at Winterborne Whitchurch son of John Molton and Elizabeth Durden (married 12 Aug 1740 at Turnworth)) who married Sarah Seafear 5th January 1764 at Winterborne Clenstone. Sarah was buried 13th Jan 1799 at Winterborne Whitchurch. William Molton and Sarah (Seafear) Molton baptized five children all at Winterborne Whitchurch:

The ARNOLD family of Milton Abbas, Dorset
A flurry of emails back and forth discussing the Arnold family at Milton Abbas between myself and Jill Morley who has been collecting Arnold material for over 30 years. She runs an active Facebook group on the Arnold family.
Likely Jill and I are related but she is unable to find earlier material on her direct line.
My Arnold line has fallen neatly into place back into the 1600s at Milton Abbas but I am stuck there with James Arnold married to Sibyl unknown. Sibyl was buried at Milton Abbas 28 Jul 1673. This couple baptized six children at Milton Abbas.

In my last challenge I talked about Jane O'Ford who was baptized at Milton Abbas and the coincidence of a child of hers Charles Butt marrying a daughter of William Arnold this week's challenge. That coupled with the surname O'Ford only really being found on Find My Past. It has occurred to me that I should check FreeReg but again did not found an O'Ford family but did find a Durnford family at Marnhull although no Jane baptized in the 1770s. I also wondered if there were any original records online at FMP for the O'Ford family just to see this visually but I was correct in my memory that they were all transcriptions. Given that the first son of James and Sibyl was named Henry then perhaps the father of James was Henry and there are two available in the correct time frame. However, I have not yet found information to link James to his father. That can be the object of my research today along with finding marriage dates that are missing and missing wife's surnames. From the records below it could also be that this family has come from Helton parish (I suspect this is Hilton which is just 2 miles from Milton Abbas) noting William Arnold is the father of a Henry who married 6 Apr 1655 Sara Vincent at Milton Abbas. Interesting but not conclusive results and one notes that there wasn't a James Arnold listed in the Protestation Returns. To be on the returns usually the individual was 18 years of age or older so born before 1624.

Although I did not add any new information, looking at the Arnold family at Milton Abbas and the O'Ford family also there has led to some rather interesting blogs!

Early 52 ancestor Blog and the Genetic Genealogy Day in Toronto at Toronto Branch of OGS
I posted my 52 Ancestors Blog today instead of tomorrow as I am very curious if I might get any comments on my research on Jean/Jane Durnford whom I now suggested could be Jane O'Ford baptized at Milton Abbas. Especially when one notes that Charles Butt (son of Jane) married Hannah Arnold whose father was born at Milton Abbas. I find the evidence collected to be rather overwhelmingly in favour of my thoughts on the ancestry of Jane O'Ford (called Durnford on her marriage registration).
We spent Saturday in Toronto (arrived on Friday afternoon) at the Genetic Genealogy Day sponsored at the North York Public Library by the Toronto Branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society. It was an excellent set of lectures and in particular I had wanted to listen to the lectures of Maurice Gleeson (known to me from the Guild of One Name Studies as he is researching one of his surnames there) and David Pike (I work with him on the T_FGS haplogroup study, I am behind putting people into their relevant subgroups at the study but will be working on that shortly).
Maurice's ancestors are Irish and I knew he would be talking about Irish records. I am especially keen these days to learn more about Irish research methods. I have been working on the Galway Blake family in order to learn as much about them, collect as many of them on the census that are available and put them into the Galway Family Tree that I have created from Martin Joseph Blake's books on his Galway Blake family. I am doing this in order to be able to separate out the other Blake families in Ireland - a number of them I am aware of and have a limited amount of material on but I want to see if there were any linked Blake families or were they all independent in their various areas in Ireland. Maurice's talk more than fulfilled my desire to learn about Irish records and I found his methodology on working on the DNA of his study of his families to be refreshing and will look again at the Blake yDNA study with some of those thoughts in mind. I also queried him about contacting some of the members of the study who are Irish and he gave me a couple of hints which will be helpful.
David Pike studies the Pike family of Newfoundland in great detail and along with that he discusses phasing of ancestors for whom you do not have DNA samples. I would like to put together my parent's DNA and with six siblings (one deceased but he has a daughter) I wondered at my accuracy in such a venture. David's talk was excellent. It was unfortunately marred by people insisting on asking questions even after they were asked not to do so. When a lecture is marked Advanced then I think people should expect to just behave as in any other lecture and save the queries to the end. It did cause him to not be able to spend the amount of time he would have liked to on particular areas. However, I did achieve my goal in understanding phasing and proceeding with the results that I have at hand. His lecture was excellent and I found a lot of other useful material in it. He also told us that he had given virtually the same lecture at ISOGG and this lecture is online so I may purchase that just to refresh my memory if I feel the need to do so.
I was also present at Maurice's talk on DNA and one name studies and he did request queries in order to better direct his talk which I can understand. This is a more specialized type of research and you can vary around the landscape on subjects you might cover. It wasn't a teaching session but rather a look at single surname research and was most interesting. He had a lot of good ideas on using some of the tools that are provided by FT DNA for studies.
We did not stay for the last lecture as we needed to head home and wanted to be there by 9:00 ish. The traffic coming out of Toronto on Saturday flowed very well and we were home in just over 4.5 hours of driving. The trip down was horrendous as we arrived at Toronto about 5:00 pm having left home at 10:00 a.m. We did do a few stops but we were nearly an hour progressing from Oshawa to our hotel near the North York Public Library (same mall actually).
Thanks again to Toronto Branch for organizing such a fantastic day. These days we tend to do most trips like this spontaneously rather than plan ahead.

She is said to be the daughter of Thomas Durnford and Mary Ball but at this time of looking once again at Jean/Jane I have not found anything further about her nor is it possible to verify her parents having been given them by another researcher back in 2004. The date of baptism was also given as 29 Sep 1771 at Winterborne Stickland which is about three years earlier than the death registration indicated but will not let that determine my final thought as it could be in error.
John and Jane Butt had seven children baptized at either Winterbourne Stickland or Winterbourne Clenstone (mostly at Stickland). These two places are very close together with Clenstone being a very small village where my husband and I spent a short while in 2008. Their eldest son Charles married Hannah Arnold (the Arnold family will be the next 52 Ancestor Challenge) 26 Dec 1820 at Winterbourne Clenstone. Their daughter Louisa married Samuel Knight 7 Sep 1849 at Winterbourne Stickland and their eldest daughter Maria Jane married Edward Blake 29 Oct 1870 at Upper Clatford and they were my great grandparents.
Jane Butt's burial lines of 3 Feb 1848 give her age as 74 years or year of birth circa 1774.

Why didn't John Butt and Jane Durnford name one of their sons Thomas. Mind you the name Thomas does appear in great grandsons of this couple. However this could have more to do with the forenames of some of the inlaws that married into the Butt family.
This is not a day of great gains but more a day of refreshing what I do know about Jane Durnford and it is still not very much. Lots about her descendants nothing particularly about her ancestors. I have made the decision however to change my website to remove the earlier information.
I am left with the thought that her name is simply spelled completely wrong on the marriage registration. I did a search on Find My Past and found in the area of Winterborne Stickland:

The name Oxford appears in Free BMD in Dorset in this area. What happens to the O'Ford surname in Dorset? The OPC Dorset site for Milton Abbas does not have the baptism I found on Find My Past. There is both an Oxford and an O'Ford family at Milton Abbas. There is also an Alford and an Elford family at Milton Abbas. This is a mystery that I would love to solve. I suspect that I may be moving to the correct path. The surname O'Ford is not listed in Reaney or Titford (Dictionaries of English Surnames), nor is it listed in MacLysaght's surnames of Ireland. It is also not listed in Rowlands Surnames of Wales. Did the priest who married John Butt and Jane Durnford mishear the name Durnford? Looking at their marriage registration I note that William Elford has signed as a witness along with William Tizzard. John Butt (husband of this Jane) also signed the parish register. Both of these men William Tizzard and William Elford) did sign the registers on occasion so did not think anything of that. But there is a William O'Ford baptizing a daughter Jane 1769 at Winterborne Stickland. The year of birth seems too early but the coincidence is amazing. I never see anyone writing the name Durnford. Everytime it is written it is the priest writing it. I would be more curious about the daughter of Thomas and Ann from Milton Abbas as being the correct Jane just because of the year of baptism. Elizabeth Molton, another of my 64 3x great grandparents, married William Arnold 30 Aug 1793 at Milton Abbas, Dorset. For a few years I had Elizabeth's surname as Malton from a trancription of their marriage lines but a cousin of mine checked the original documents in the Dorset Record Office and found the surname was Molton. That set us off on an interesting journey. We both had found the baptism of an Elizabeth Molton 20 Apr 1766 at Winterborne Whitchurch daughter of William and Sarah Molton (and it was known that her husband William Arnold had been baptized at Milton Abbas). We could now claim Elizabeth as our own which was a rather comfortable addition as Elizabeth had been quite brickwalled for ages for my cousin and for me from the beginning of my research time in 2004.
However, we could not find a marriage for William Molton and Sarah although did find the baptism of William 2 Aug 1743 at Winterborne Whitchurch and the burial of Sarah 13 Jan 1799 at Winterborne Whitchurch. They baptized six children at Winterborne Whitchurch namely:
Thomas baptized 11 Jun 1764 and buried 10 Feb 1765 at Winterborne Whitchurch
Elizabeth baptized 20 Apr 1766
Jane baptized 24 Jun 1769 and buried 20 Apr 1771 at Winterborne Whitchurch

Searching through Find My Past for William Molton I came across an interesting marriage at Winterborne Clenston: William Malton married Sarah Seafear 5 Jan 1764 with witnesses James Masterman and Thomas Clerk. The witnesses were often to be found on marriages at this parish (I am the online parish clerk for Winterborne Clenston but had not noticed this marriage before).
There is also a baptism at Winterborne Whitechurch 2 Aug 1743 of William Molton son of John and Elizabeth Molton. This I had found earlier.

Again a new marriage on Find My Past and it is at Turnworth with John Molton marrying Elizabeth Durden 12 Aug 1740. John is of Winterborn Kingston (at the time of his marriage) and Elizabeth of Winterborne Whitechurch. Turnworth is close to Winterborne Clenstone and Winterborne Whitechurch. We visited all of these sites in 2008.I had found earlier the baptism of a John Molton 20 Jul 1714 at Winterborne Whitechurch son of John and Elizabeth Molton. There was a John Molton buried at Winterborne Whitechurch 24 Jul 1784 and an Elizabeth Molton buried 18 Jun 1781 at Winterborne Whitechurch wife of John aged 67 years.
There was also a John Molton (senior) buried 29 Apr 1747 at Winterborne Whitechurch aged 64 years and an Elizabeth Molton (widow of John) buried 14 Dec 1768 at Winterborne Whitechurch. The following children are baptized at Winterborne Whitechurch children of John and Elizabeth Molton (John Molton said to be of Milton, generally thought to refer to Milton Abbas but a website on abandoned communities is giving me second thought as there was a town of Milton midway between Dorchester and Blandford).

I do not know anything about Elizabeth other than her parents at baptism, her marriage to William Arnold and the children that they had and her death date. She lived in Winterborne Whitchurch all of her life it would appear although they married at Milton Abbas (the home of William Arnold). I know that her great grandparents John and Elizabeth Molton were buried at Winterborne Whitechurch and baptized all of their children there but do not have a marriage for them nor do I know their parents or where they were baptized. These furtherest back in her line on the Molton side were my 7x great grandparents. I have learned her mother's maiden name of Seafear but nothing more about her mother.
William Arnold and Elizabeth Molton would have ten children although some list the youngest Mark born 19 years after the youngest as the son of Sarah (daughter of this couple). However, we could not find a marriage for William Molton and Sarah although did find the baptism of William 2 Aug 1743 at Winterborne Whitchurch and the burial of Sarah 13 Jan 1799 at Winterborne Whitchurch. They baptized six children at Winterborne Whitchurch namely:

Searching through Find My Past for William Molton I came across an interesting marriage at Winterborne Clenston: William Malton married Sarah Seafear 5 Jan 1764 with witnesses James Masterman and Thomas Clerk. The witnesses were often to be found on marriages at this parish (I am the online parish clerk for Winterborne Clenston but had not noticed this marriage before).
There is also a baptism at Winterborne Whitechurch 2 Aug 1743 of William Molton son of John and Elizabeth Molton. This I had found earlier.

Again a new marriage on Find My Past and it is at Turnworth with John Molton marrying Elizabeth Durden 12 Aug 1740. John is of Winterborn Kingston (at the time of his marriage) and Elizabeth of Winterborne Whitechurch. Turnworth is close to Winterborne Clenstone and Winterborne Whitechurch. We visited all of these sites in 2008.I had found earlier the baptism of a John Molton 20 Jul 1714 at Winterborne Whitechurch son of John and Elizabeth Molton. There was a John Molton buried at Winterborne Whitechurch 24 Jul 1784 and an Elizabeth Molton buried 18 Jun 1781 at Winterborne Whitechurch wife of John aged 67 years.
There was also a John Molton (senior) buried 29 Apr 1747 at Winterborne Whitechurch aged 64 years and an Elizabeth Molton (widow of John) buried 14 Dec 1768 at Winterborne Whitechurch. The following children are baptized at Winterborne Whitechurch children of John and Elizabeth Molton (John Molton said to be of Milton, generally thought to refer to Milton Abbas but a website on abandoned communities is giving me second thought as there was a town of Milton midway between Dorchester and Blandford).

I do not know anything about Elizabeth other than her parents at baptism, her marriage to William Arnold and the children that they had and her death date. She lived in Winterborne Whitchurch all of her life it would appear although they married at Milton Abbas (the home of William Arnold). I know that her great grandparents John and Elizabeth Molton were buried at Winterborne Whitechurch and baptized all of their children there but do not have a marriage for them nor do I know their parents or where they were baptized. These furtherest back in her line on the Molton side were my 7x great grandparents. I have learned her mother's maiden name of Seafear but nothing more about her mother.
William Arnold and Elizabeth Molton would have ten children although some list the youngest Mark born 19 years after the youngest as the son of Sarah (daughter of this couple). Her daughter Hannah was my 3x great grandmother and she married Charles Butt and my last challenge was John Butt the father of Charles.

Molton Family of Winterborne Whitchurch
The original transcription of the marriage of Elizabeth Molton and William Arnold had the spelling of her name as the priest had written it namely Malton. However, as I observed the signature and having received an email from another descendant of this family it became obvious that the surname of Elizabeth was Molton.
There is a baptism for Elizabeth Molton 20 Apr 1766 at Winterborne Whitchurch and the daughter of William and Sarah Molton. A marriage has not yet been found for William and Sarah and that would be my research theme to attempt to find a marriage for this couple. Arnold family Research Day
My Arnold family I mentioned earlier as Hannah Arnold married Charles Butt 26 Dec 1820 at Winterborne Clenstone. This is the beautiful Church of St Nicholas located in this very small rural village of Winterborne Clenstone, Dorset along the Winterborne. We visited St Nicholas Church and Graveyard the 20 April 2008 and the Winterborne was a small stream following under an old wooden bridge along by the graveyard which sat at the foot of the Knoll upon which the Church sat. The Church is still in use and part of the British Heritage Trust.
The Church was apparently rebuilt in 1840 by Mrs Michel and it is an edifice of flint and Portland stone in the Perpendicular style. The earlier Church was a large ancient structure.
Hannah Arnold was the daughter of William Arnold and Elizabeth Molton and they married 30 Aug 1793 at Milton Abbas. They had ten children although there is some thought that the 10th son was actually the son of Sarah Arnold daughter of William Arnold and Elizabeth Molton. This is the Sarah Arnold who married Joseph Butt (brother to Charles Butt the husband of Hannah Arnold).
Milton Abbas again is one of the Dorset parishes which is on Ancestry. The marriage is found on page 29 No. 111 William Arnold of this parish and Elizabeth Molton of the Parish of Winterbourne Whitchurch married in this Church by Banns this Thirtieth day of August in the Year One Thousand Seven Hundred and Ninety by me John Richardson Curate. This marriage was solemnized between us William Arnold, Elizabeth Molton. In the Presence of The Mark of Jane Lovell and the Mark of William Arnol, Jethro Vacher. The priest has written what looks like Malton for Elizabeth's surname and it was a mystery to me for quite a while until I saw her original signature where she writes Molton. William was baptized 21 Feb 1770 at Milton Abbas and the son of John Arnold and Hannah/Ann Norris who were themselves married 5 Jul 1751 at Milton Abbas. John and Hannah had eight children of whom William was the seventh and the youngest son.
John Arnold was baptized 4 Aug 1725 at Milton Abbas and the son of John and Susannah Arnold. Their marriage has not yet been located. John Arnold (father of John) was baptized 21 Apr 1702 at Milton Abbas the son of James Arnold and Mary Hardy (Hardy according to some researchers not yet verified by me). This James was baptized 4 Oct 1663 at Milton Abbas and the son of James and Sibyl Arnold. Another researcher has their marriage as 20 Jul 1673 at Milton Abbas (the dates are somewhat peculiar). I would like to verify these dates and extract the Arnold entries from the Milton Abbas parish Registers. I am curious if it is possible to move further back as there are several Arnold males listed on the 1641-42 Protestation Returns for Milton Abbas: Henry Arnold (gent), Wm Arnold, David Arnold, Henry Arnold, John Arnold with Richard Arnold as Constable.
To facilitate this search I will extract the Arnold entries from the Milton Abbas parish registers beginning in 1812 and moving backwards to the beginning of the registers in 1560. It would be exciting to be able to take this family all the way back to the beginning of the Parish Registers. Milton Abbas is this amazing village in Dorset where it appears when you enter the town that all the houses have thatched roofs. Beautiful designs in the thatching and in fact Milton Abbas was the first planned village in England. Lord Milton, Earl of Dorchester, in 1780 rebuilt the village of Milton Abbey moving them to a new spot that didn't block the view from his home. It is a delightful village very spacious and the thatched roofs absolutely splendid as you drive in along the main road.

Molton family of Winterborne Whitchurch, Dorset, UK
The Molton family is a relatively new family for me in that the spelling looked to be Malton originally until one of the Knight descendants was into the Dorset Registry Office at Dorchester and found that the correct spelling was Molton. That turned out to be most helpful as he then quickly found the baptism of Elizabeth Molton 20 April 1776 at Winterborne Whitchurch. Elizabeth Molton married William Arnold at Milton Abbas 30 Aug 1793 and the priest obligingly recorded that William was of Milton Abbas and Elizabeth of Winterborne Whitchurch. Milton Abbas and Winterborne Whitchurch are only two miles apart but the countryside in the Winterborne Valley is absolutely gorgeous. Long graceful valleys with beautiful thatched cottages dotting the landscape. The Churches majestic and many of them quite ancient. Our trip through this area was so memorable that I can still close my eyes and see the countryside much as my grandfather had described it on one of his few trips to this area. He called it the Winterborne Valley where his mother's family had lived for centuries. The story that unites the Blake family of Upper Clatford with the Knight family of Turnworth is probably a very interesting one but I never asked my grandfather and to the best of my memory I do not think he told me although he might have and it simply didn't impinge on my eight year old brain at least the memory has not emerged to date.
Elizabeth Molton baptized 20 April 1766 and the daughter of William and Sarah Molton. I have not found any further information on their marriage or other children and that is my intent with these special research times (of about 1 to 2 hours) that I have allotted on a bimonthly basis. My correspondent felt strongly that William was baptized 2 August 1743 at Winterborne Whitchurch and that Sarah was buried 13 Jan 1799 at Winterborne Whitchurch. Possibly he felt that John was the son of John and Elizabeth Molton with John being baptized 20 Jul 1714 at Winterborne Whitchurch and buried 24 Jul 1784 at Winterborne Whitchurch. Elizabeth his wife was buried 18 Jun 1781 at Winterborne Whitchurch. Possibly this John's parents were also a John and Elizabeth Molton who married in 1740 at Winterborne Whitchurch and this John was buried 29 Apr 1747 at Winterborne Whitchurch and Elizabeth was buried 14 Dec 1768 at Winterborne Whitchurch. Now to discover if I can find any records to follow through on this information and perhaps add to it. The baptisms in 1710 and 1712 state that John Molton was of Milton (Abbas?).
I do not find any entries for the Molton/Molten family in the Milton Abbas register.
Having extracted all these entries for the Molton family I tried to find out more about them and did discover a Moulton Facebook family page which claimed that the Molton family name was a derivative of this family. It does open the area for looking and I shall keep that in mind.
FindMyPast does have some of the later Molton records for Winterborne Whitchurch but not the earlier marriages. World Connect does not appear to have this particular family included in their Molton families. Ancestry has one family chart but they are located in the United States in the 1700s which doesn't work with my lines!
I need to try and find the Protestation Returns for Winterborne Whitchurch which would tell me the family was there in 1641-42 although the earliest baptisms do say that John Molton/Molten was of Milton. There is a Thomas Mollet at Milton Abbas so I would need to look at the originals and I will check and see if I captured them when we visited Salt Lake City. Otherwise, it could be on my list for next time.
I shall search some of my Dorset records to see if I can find any further information on the family and that can be for the next Molton Research Day.

Elizabeth Molton baptized 20 April 1766 and the daughter of William and Sarah Molton. I have not found any further information on their marriage or other children and that is my intent with these special research times (of about 1 to 2 hours) that I have allotted on a bimonthly basis. My correspondent felt strongly that William was baptized 2 August 1743 at Winterborne Whitchurch and that Sarah
David Foster is the OPC for Winterborne Whitchurch and has put quite a bit of his information on line.

Arnold family of Winterborne Whitchurch and Milton Abbas, Dorset
Yesterday I spent some of my research time working on the Hampshire Blake family marriages. I am now in the process of matching up the marriage partners from Free BMD. I worked on 1910 and 1911 and will now go to the 1911 British Census to see if I am able to determine which of the possible partners is the correct one. It will be a slow process but aided greatly on occasion by Marriage Challenges that are undertaken by the Guild of One Name Studies. I will also begin work on the Andover Registration District Cardinal Points in case, at some point in the future, a member of the Guild takes on the Andover Registration District Marriage Challenge. I wish I could do it but from faraway Canada that is quite impractical except for the individual Churches in the Registration District for which I have the marriage fiche. Indeed I have quite a number and intend to eventually purchase all of them. The Blake family is found extensively in this Registration District (as well as many others).
Today, is the research day for the Arnold family. Hannah Arnold (baptized 18 Jan 1795 at Winterborne Whitchurch) was the daughter of William Arnold (baptized 21 Feb 1770 at Milton Abbas) and Elizabeth Molton (baptized 20 April 1766 at Winterborne Whitchurch) and married 30 Aug 1793 at Milton Abbas all of Dorset UK. Interestingly three children of the Charles Butt and Hannah Arnold family married three children of the same Knight family. Charles Butt was known to my grandfather and is my only link back in time for the Butt/Arnold family. My grandfather could remember visiting his great grandfather Charles Butt for his 80th birthday celebrations at least that is what my memory has left me with from the eight year old who listened eagerly to her grandpa talking about his ancestors in England. He did not know anything about the wife of Charles other than her name which I did not remember from long ago but did discover when I undertook my family genealogy beginning eight years ago. It was at Gene-O-Rama in 2003 that I first noticed the National Institute for Genealogical Studies. I thought about doing a course there in Methodology because my cousin George DeKay wanted me to do a Profile for the Pincombe family (my maternal line) for the Westminster Delaware History book (now published). Not really having any ideas on how to do English Research from Canada I felt that a course in Methodology would assist me. In two months of taking the course I had signed up for all the English Record Courses and just six months later I added all the Canadian Record Courses to my portfolio (I graduated in May 2007).
When we visited Milton Abbas (briefly as a drive through) in 2008, the village lived up to its name as one of the most beautiful in Dorset with all of its thatched roofs. We drove through on a somewhat misty day although quite visible and the village had a somewhat ethereal quality (probably mostly in my mind) that lingers still if I close my eyes and remember again coming round on the road and entering the village. The Arnold family were known to be at Milton Abbas back into the 1500s with there being six members of the Arnold family on the 1641-42 Protestation Returns:

Other researchers have looked extensively at the Arnold family but I have not yet found, what I consider, a clear path back to one of these earlier Arnold members. The parents of William Arnold (father of Hannah Arnold) were John Arnold (baptized 4 Aug 1725 at Milton Abbas) and Hannah (or Ann) Norris (baptized 5 Jan 1731 at Milton Abbas) and they were married 5 Jul 1751 at Milton Abbas. They had eight children with William being the seventh child and third son. Mary (bc 1752) married Stephen Elford 27 Apr 1780 at Milton Abbas, John (bc 1754), Jane (bc 1756), Joseph (bc 1759 at Milton Abbas) married Susanna Best 18 Jul 1781 at Milton Abbas), Hannah (bc 1762 at Milton Abbas) married John Hooper 21 Mar 1791 at Milton Abbas, Susannah (bc 1765 at Milton Abbas), William (as above) and Ann (bc 1773) married James Vacher 26 Jul 1796 at Milton Abbas. I decided to check and see if I could find any baptism details for the siblings of William as it is a while since I have looked at this family.
The OPC Dorset page is an excellent resource (I have put up the Winterborne Clenstone material) and I have found that the baptismal records are now available from the Bishops Transcripts for the above mentioned children:

I wonder if the earlier researcher has connected Ann to the correct family since she is not listed in the baptisms.
Looking at the Norris family there was an Ann Norris baptized 5 Jan 1731 child of John and Mary Norris at Milton Abbas. One other child was baptized to this family namely Joseph baptized 30 Apr 1735 at Milton Abbas. There were members of the Norris family at Milton Abbas on the 1641-42 Protestation Returns namely Christopher Norris, William Norris, George Norris, and Leonard Norris. I shall explore the Norris family next time I work on the Arnold family.

The parents of James Arnold (married circa early 1690s) are unknown as is the surname of his wife Mary. I checked the IGI including the new Beta search.
There is a James Arnold baptized 4 Oct 1663 and son of James and Sibbell Arnold (twin of John baptized same date). Interestingly they also have a son Henry and one of their grandsons is named Henry. Henry Arnold at Milton Abbas was on the Protestation Returns.
The will of Henry Arnold, gent, exists as an abstract and he has sons Robert, Henry, Richard (possibly eldest son), William.
"The will of Henry ARNOLD (Gentleman) of Bagbere in Milton Abbas, Mentions: to be buried in Milton Abbas where his mother and father were buried left £5 to the Church of Milton. Mentions, Daughter Anne Goldsbough £20 and to her five children £20 to be paid to them when they are one and twenty years old, children of Robert Goldsbough, gave to the two daughters of his son Robert ARNOLD £200 equally divided. The parents of James Arnold (married circa early 1690s) are unknown as is the surname of his wife Mary. I checked the IGI including the new Beta search.
There is a James Arnold baptized 4 Oct 1663 and son of James and Sibbell Arnold (twin of John baptized same date). Interestingly they also have a son Henry and one of their grandsons is named Henry. Henry Arnold at Milton Abbas was on the Protestation Returns.
The will of Henry Arnold, gent, exists as an abstract and he has sons Robert, Henry, Richard (possibly eldest son), William.
"The will of Henry ARNOLD (Gentleman) of Bagbere in Milton Abbas, Mentions: to be buried in Milton Abbas where his mother and father were buried left £5 to the Church of Milton. Mentions, Daughter Anne Goldsbough £20 and to her five children £20 to be paid to them when they are one and twenty years old, children of Robert Goldsbough, gave to the two daughters of his son Robert ARNOLD £200 equally divided. Mentions: Brother in law Mr Thomas Rose or Rofe, John Trogenwell for rent. Son: Henry ARNOLD Son: Richard ARNOLD Mentions George Baker. Elizabeth and Thomas Domfret? (I think these were servants) My son-in-law John Coobes and Elizabeth his daughter, two daughters of my son Henry ARNOLD and William ARNOLD my son. Sampson Biles, my son Robert ARNOLD and his brother in law Thomas Rose/Rofe. Mentions his brother John Arnold of Alton (Gentlemen) son- in-law Richard Savidge (I am not sure if this is John of Alton’s son-in -law or his) Son Robert ARNOLD rector of Melcombe who I make and appoint (I think this means son of my brother John of Alton) This will was granted to Richard ARNOLD ( I think the oldest son)"
I do not get a sense from this will that he has any grandsons from his sons. The Arnolds at Milton Abbas in 1641-42 are:

William Arnold
David Arnold
Henry Arnold
John Arnold
Henry`s will was dated 1646 mentioning his sons Robert, Henry, Richard and William. That leaves John and David Arnold as different lines at Milton Abbas and perhaps my James descends from one of these other lines. There do not appear to be any wills of these lines (at least not mentioned on the Arnold wills site). Henry does mention a brother John at Alton.
At this point I will leave any more thoughts on the Arnold family until my next research day on this family which will include a look at the Norris family.

Results of Research at Salt Lake City - 7 April 2008
I continued working on the Milton Abbas Poor Law Records and they will take me several more days to complete (about 25 more images). No new discoveries of my family names there.
I also discovered the Centenary Club at the Ontario Genealogical Society (of which I am a member) and downloaded their form (actually I decided to retype it into word and then I could type it instead of handwriting). I have filled in most of the form and I have five emigrant ancestors (plus two children who were born in England) who have been in Ontario for more than 100 years. My maternal grandmother came in 1908 but I decided not to trace her back since she is just over the 100 years and I already had five adult emigrant ancestors.
I also am back on track doing my exercises which is great. I used the elliptical machine for 7 minutes which is good for me and then did aerobics for another 20 minutes then weightlifting for 10 minutes. I followed that up with my special shoulder exercises which I have been doing since I had therapy on my shoulder following the torn rotator cup. This injury has healed I think as I usually am not bothered by it.

I continued with the Milton Abbas Poor Law Records and learned a little about the Norris family (John Arnold married Hannah Norris 5 July 1751 at Milton Abbas). Hannah's father was John and definitely not mentioned on this Poor Law Record but the Poor Law Record of 1667 thus far in transcription lists Christopher Norris and the Protestation Returns of 1641-2 list Christopher Norris, George Norris, Leonard Norris and William Norris. A Francis Arnold is listed on the 1696 Poor Law Rate and the 1641-42 Protestation Return lists David Arnold, Henry Arnold Gent, Henry Arnold, John Arnold, Richard Arnold and William Arnold. The father of my John Arnold was also John Arnold and his father was likely James Arnold. But I have no idea who the father of this James (bc 1668) was. Nor do I know the father of John Norris (bc 1700). I was hoping to learn more about this family at Salt Lake City as the Parish Registers have never been filmed (only the Bishops Transcripts are available and they are limited). Thus far neither of these families appears on the disbursements which is unfortunate :) They were both farmers.
I continued working on DNA studies as well. My Hampshire study has now expanded to four members. This has the potential to be very popular and will eventually occupy a lot of time I suspect. The potential for interesting observations remains very high if enough people join that can trace their ancestry back into the 1500s or earlier on paper. I do not think that I will turn people away but will put them into an Unassigned category for the moment. If their family lore says Hampshire, they may one day prove the line. If the study becomes very large I will concentrate only on the individuals with a valid paper trail in my reporting. That would also encourage people to do the paper trail and not just wait for matches.

Results of Research at Salt Lake City - 5 April 2009
Returning to working on the Salt Lake City images and I transcribed Milton Abbas Poor Law Records for 1696 and 1656 today. Very interesting reading and I need to analyze them now to see if I have added to the information on my Arnold family who lived at Milton Abbas in the 1600s and 1700s by parish records. Hannah Arnold married Charles Butt at Winterborne Stickland and they were my 3x great grandparents. I will continue transcribing the Milton Abbas records to see if any interesting Arnold information emerges. The next set of Poor Law records are for Turnworth and those I am going to find extremely interesting as my Knight family quite dominate the parish registers at Turnworth in the 1800s.
I also added a list of surnames to the Hampshire England DNA project with assistance from the coordinator for the Devon Project. I had drawn out a list from the UK Surnames site but I added to that the Kingsclere site which she had mentioned to me. Up to three members now and I am hopeful that this particular study will form the nucleus of my Hampshire research. Managing the Hampshire Genuki pages gives me the opportunity to really add detail to the parishes of Hampshire.

Results of Research at Salt Lake City - 4 April 2009
Back to working on my Salt Lake City images and I decided to move to Dorset and work on the Protestation Returns for my villages there in the Winterbourne Valley - Winterborne Clenstone, Winterborne Stickland, Milton Abbas, Turnworth, Winterborne Houghton, etc. I have the Poor Rate for these villages and I have a mixture of people from here - agricultural labourers, stone masons, carpenters, and land owners. I shall transcribe the records and see what I can learn about all of them. My great grandmother Blake was Maria Jane Knight and she was born at Turnworth early in January 1850 but I am still trying to find her death date. I have her picture and she has a quiet smile in 1898. Usually people were shy or very stiff in their pictures but she stares forthrightly at the camera with just the hint of a smile in her face. She is wearing her blond braided hair like a coronet around her head, her black dress looking neat and tidy and her shoes are highly polished. My father adored his father's mother and he stayed with them at Upper Clatford a number of times as a child. My father remembered that she had come from close to Blandford Forum (Turnworth is just to the northwest of Blandford) and the name quite intrigued him I rather think.
Maria Jane Knight's parents were Samuel Knight and Louisa Butt and two of her aunts and uncles Knight married two of her aunts and uncles Butt. They were a closely knit family and my father knew his great grandfather Samuel Knight fairly well. They used to visit him every summer by traveling through the New Forest which quite stuck in his memory. Samuel died in 1912 when my father was eight. He was a tall thin white haired man who lived with his eldest granddaughter (my grandfather's oldest sister). The Knight family were stone masons and carpenters, the Butt family were agricultural labourers (Charles (Samuel's father) was a Wesleyan Methodist Lay Preacher) mostly as far back as I can tell, the Arnolds were land owners and other surnames were: Ball, Dashwood, Durnford, Ellis, Foster, Gantrell, Lemon, Long, Malton, Norris, Rolles, Sandle, Vincent and Wellspring. Unfortunately, I am unable to purchase these parish registers and the Bishops Transcripts are quite incomplete. One day I hope to spend a few days at Dorchester reading through the register copies although, to be honest, I would rather be out visiting where they lived.
