An online tree at World Connect has been produced by laura foenander where she has the parents of George Archer Blake as Benjamin Blake and Mary Ann Powney. Benjamin said to be born 1754 in England. The death of Benjamin is said to be in 1820 in Poorneah, Bengal. He is said to be the son of John Blake (born circa 1713). Benjamin’s second wife has the name Mary Ann Powney in this tree on World Connect. His first wife appears to be Elizabeth (unknown).

Will of Richard Blake, gentleman, Bristol, Gloucestershire - The National Archives PROB 11/963/393, probated 18 Feb 1771

Richard Blake the Testator lives at Bristol. He asked to be buried at the parish Church of Saint Werburgh and so the earlier blog on the memorials for the Blake family in Gloucestershire locates him very nicely:

http://kippeeb.blogspot.ca/2014/04/1248-blake-family-gloucestershire-notes.html

Hence he is the son of Richard Blake of Chipping Sodbury and Mary (unknown) who were buried at Chipping Sodbury. He had uncles Joseph and Samuel both died in 1715. He was married to Mary Greenway and five of their children died as infants. The surviving children – two daughters – mentioned in the will below Susannah and Hannah.

Names mentioned in the will below:

Richard Blake, gentleman, Bristol, testator

Mr. William Blake is somewhat of a mystery. The testator is godfather to his son Richard. There is also a Christopher Blake, kinsman, mentioned in the will. Eleanor Anthony also his kinswoman. His cousins the Greenway family are also mentioned. Mrs. Jane Rudge is also a cousin.

The assumption that this Richard is a grandson of Ambrose Blake of Pinhills does seem to be reasonable given some of the information related in the blog of Christopher Blake’s will:

http://kippeeb.blogspot.ca/2014/04/will-of-christopher-blake-yeoman.html

Christopher in that will mentions his cousins John Blake, William Blake (deceased) and Joseph Blake all of Tetbury and Edward Blake and Henry Blake of London. Usually one does have relatives as godparents to one’s children (but not always) and this was perhaps more the case in days gone by. This line though has daughtered out; no Blake descendants of this Richard are named.

The will of William Blake of Bristol (1792) is to come and I wonder if the first memorial mentioned in the blog on the Memorials to the Blake family of Gloucestershire pertains to this family:

http://kippeeb.blogspot.ca/2014/04/1248-blake-family-gloucestershire-notes.html

Richard Blake son of William and Rebecca Blake died in 1829 aged 69 (born circa 1760). This Richard would have been 11 years of age when this will was written and the son of a William Blake of St Stephen’s Church, Bristol. This Blake family uses the Calne Blake family crest as well. I wondered in this earlier blog if they were from Cornwall but finding this new information I need to investigate William and Rebecca Blake and see what I can learn about their ancestry. William’s will is to come and was probated in 1792.

Still to do the wills of Robert Blake 1849, Robert Blake 1854 and then William Blake 1792 and William Blake 1853 and Gloucester PCC wills will be completed. I do however have 37 wills that were from Bristol Diocese and a few of them are older wills. I think that I should move to these wills next.

Will of Mary Blake, widow, Bristol - The National Archives PROB 11/1133/269, probated 3 Sep 1785

Mary Blake, widow of Bristol, is the testatrix. She names two daughters in her will Susanna Woodward and Hannah Deverell. According to Wikipedia Susanna married Richard Woodward 3 October 1763 and her father was identified as Richard Blake of Bristol. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Woodward_%28bishop%29

Perhaps this note from Gloucestershire Notes and Queries Volume 3, Page 298 may refer to Richard Blake father of Susanna Woodward. In St Werburgh’s Church, Bristol there was this inscription ‘To the memory of Mr Richard Blake, many years an inhabitant of this parish, who died the 3rd day of January, 1771, age 70. In the same vault where his remains are deposited, also are interred Mary Blake, his mother, Samuel and Mary Greenway, whose only daughter he married, and five of his children, who died in their infancy. Likewise the remains of Mary, his wife, who died 21st October, 1781, aged 82.’ “

This is Note 1248 which I will blog separately for my future use as I work through these wills in Gloucestershire. http://kippeeb.blogspot.ca/2014/04/1248-blake-family-gloucestershire-notes.html

The Will of Richard Blake husband of Mary Blake, present testatrix is to be transcribed in a few days and I will discuss this family in more depth at that time.

Will of John Blake, Clerk, Feyreford, Gloucestershire - The National Archives PROB 11/37/293, probated 4 Apr 1555

This, the will of John Blake, Cleric gives as his location Fairford, Gloucestershire but in the Diocese of Worcester. It isn’t particularly close to any known Blake area. From the Blake Pedigree Chart held at the Swindon and Wiltshire Record Office there is a John Blake Lord Abbot of Cirencester in County Gloucestershire. The time frame would be similar to this John. He does not, however, mention any family although his brother William would be living in Lacock in this time period. Feyreford is nine miles east of Cirencester. This is after the dissolution of the monasteries during the Reign of Henry VIII which continued through the Reign of Edward VI. The fate of the Lord Abbot of Cirencester is unknown and could he have moved on to Feyreford where there was a house that still remained? There was a large church there dedicated to Saint Mary.

I still have about 70 wills from the Gloucestershire Record Office and included in that group are more wills from this early time period.
