Sarah Moggridge (1731 - 1807)

52 Ancestor Challenge - Challenge 6

Blake, King, Coleman, Pearce, Farmer, unknown, Lambden, Sarah (unknown), Knight, Ellis, Knight, Vincent, Butt, Durnford, Arnold, Molton, Cotterel, Bartlett, Alderman, Ann (unknown), Sherwood, unknown, Habberfield, Collings, Rawlings, Tanner, Dove, Morgan, Lywood, Canham, unknown, Peck, Pincombe, Charley, Rowcliffe, Pearse, Rew, Moggridge, Siderfin, Kent, Gray, Hilton, Cobb, Sproxton, Routledge, Tweddle, Routledge, Routledge, (unknown) Buller, unknown, Beard, Hemsley, Welch, Brockhouse, Cheatle, Woodcock, unknown Taylor, unknown, Harborne, Lewis, Roberts, Croxall, Lawley, unknown

Purely accidental that I have chosen another 4x great grandmother but Sarah Moggridge rather intrigued me.The surname was a new one for me although I had seen it in Devon near Bishops Nympton. The discovery of my Somerset ancestors was a real surprise. Etched in stone on the memorial stone of John Pincombe and Elizabeth Rew (my emigrant ancestors from Devon) were the words "Native of Devon." A good deal of lost time was spent initially looking for an Elizabeth Rew/Rue (the spelling of her name appeared to be in doubt on this side of the Atlantic). But eventually I learned about PCC wills and quickly found a will for a John Rew probated in 1848 where he mentioned his daughter Elizabeth Pincombe. In his will he asked to be taken back from Sheepwash where he was living with his son Thomas and family to Selworthy to be buried as close as possible to his wife. That was my first clue that Elizabeth Rew was from Somerset. Serendipitously I surmised that perhaps the reason that I found John Pincombe and his sons John and William on the 1841 census at Molland Devon by themselves (wife and Elizabeth, an infant, missing) was because Thomas and his sister Elizabeth Pincombe had gone to Selworthy to bring John to live with Thomas. I indeed did find them on the census at Upper Hopcott Farm, Wootton Courtney with the aunt of Elizabeth Ann (Siderfin) Nurcombe, an uncle Robert Siderfin, Elizabeth's brother Thomas and a number of children belonging to all of these families.

Further research brought me back to Selworthy as the place of birth for Elizabeth Rew as the daughter of John Rew and Elizabeth Siderfin (married 30 Jan 1792 at Selworthy). John Rew was the son of John Rew and Sarah Moggridge (married 25 Jun 1761 at Selworthy). I have the fiche for this parish register and it reads:

The Banns of Marriage between John Rue and Sarah Moggridge were duly published in this Church Sunday the 31st of May for the 7th of June and for the 14th of June in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and sixty one by me Nath: Brice Curate

John Rue and Sarah Moggridge were married with Banns the 25th of June in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and Sixty one Nath: Brice Curate.

This marriage was solemnized between us John Rew Sarah Rew in the presence of Betty Brice and William Hide.

Searching through the Selworthy Parish Registers I did find a Sarah Moggridge baptized 28 Dec 1731 daughter of Symon and Mary Mogridge. I found a burial for Sarah at Selworthy 31 May 1807 which read Sarah Rew widow 74 years which gives her a birth year of 1732. Moggridge is not a common name in the Selworthy Parish Records and I found just the two baptisms in this register  one for older sister Mary and Sarah. Simon Mogridge married Mary Phelp 9 Feb 1724 at Selworthy (and this is the only Moggridge marriage in this time period) and both are buried at Selworthy Simon 9 Nov 1766 and Mary Mogridge 11 Jul 1762.

Sarah and John baptized six children at Selworthy:

Mary 26 Jul 1762
Sarah 7 Feb 1764 (married William Bricknole 19 Sep 1778 at Selworthy)
John Rew 27 Feb 1766 (married Elizabeth Siderfin 30 Jan 1792 at Selworthy)
William Rew  13 Dec 1767
Betty 26 Dec 1769 (married John Kent 8 Jun 1805 at Selworthy)
Thomas 5 Apr 1772 (married Ann Horn 25 Oct 1803 at Selworthy)

Although Simon Mogridge married at Selworthy he does not appear in the baptisms at Selworthy. I found just one Symon Mogridge baptized in the latter part of the 1600s and that was at Culbone and I do not have the parish registers for Culbone so have not yet been able to verify that entry. It is from Marth Southwood's excellent transcriptions for west Somerset parishes:

http://www.wsom.org.uk/Registers/CulBap16861741.htm

Symon Mogridge son of David and Emot Mogridge baptized 28 Mar 1686. Two other sons Henry and John were baptized 2 Oct 1684 and 27 Dec 1692 and that is the extent of the baptisms for this couple at Culbone.

I do have the Porlock parish registers and did find Moggridge/Mogridge family members there. A number of entries are there for this family and another researcher looking at Mogridge/Moggridge has a blog discussing the Moggridge family.

http://mogbloglife.blogspot.ca/search/label/Mogridge

He corrected me on one of my Moggridge lines and I have changed that item and thank you to him for the information.

I have not yet found the marriage of David and Emot.

I am left thinking that Grace Moggeridge is perhaps a descendant of Philip and Joan Moggeridge (perhaps a grand daughter since she married in 1695 and they had children between 1630 and 1640. She was perhaps born circa 1665 to 1675. She would need to be a daughter of John as he was the only son who survived.

Simon, the father of Sarah Moggridge, was possibly the Simon baptized in 1686 at Culbone. Culbone is seven miles from Wootton Courtenay and 3 miles from Porlock. I do have the parish registers for Porlock and the transcription for the early records but I really need to read them for myself to see all the Moggridge/Moggeridge entries.

It is rather interesting that the Rew family is found at Sheepwash and my Pincombe family at Molland in the 1800s and the Moggridge family lived at Molland in the 1700s. One wonders at the coincidence of that actually.

Blog statistics - week of May 18 - 25, 2014

Periodically I glance at the statistics for my blog and was rather surprised to see that in a one week interval just past 1117 of my pages had been looked at in China.

One week statistics

Page lookups by country (top ten only listed)

China  1117

United States   305

Russia   181

United Kingdom   125

Germany   123

Canada   65

Poland   40

Australia   35

Ukraine   28

Hong Kong   21

I became aware following one of the lectures that my husband attended that my pages were handy for anyone transcribing old wills as you can now bring the original will up on Ancestry and than compare it with my transcription. An interesting feature of my blog that I certainly did not anticipate!

I wanted to look at the countries which are listed (and only the top ten are listed) and think about why people would look at my blog with respect to the pages that they are reviewing and again only the top ten are listed.

The most looked at blog post in this group of ten during the past week is for Edward Blake who has property at Andover but asks to be buried at Ludgershall. This will probated in 1626 is quite interesting and especially I should be able to place this Edward at some point in the future. He had property at Andover where my Blake line was. One of his grandchildren is named Nicholas and I have hypothesized is he a grandson of Robert Blake son of Nicholas Blake who left his will in 1547 at Knights Enham.

The Blog post for the Visitation of Devon was the next most visited and it captures the Pincombe family for anyone interested in that particular family name.

H11 haplogroup post is linked to the H11 mtDNA study at FT DNA and anyone looking at the results for that grouping will see the link to my blog post on H11. I continue to work away periodically on that particular subclade of H haplogroup.

The Blake family pictures was the next most visited post and that did suprise me that so many people would find my pictures that interesting in this random one week time period. No ideas on why actually. But I did place them online in order to clearly establish my line back pictorially in the Blake family.

The next most visited post was the Blake family and in particular the Theophilus Blake family in the United States. A mistake crept into this family line and they had been incorrectly linked back to the Jasper Blake family of New Hampshire and Wimbotsham Norfolk. It is actually good to see that this post is being looked at in this random weekly sample.

The Dumoulin family post receives attention from both here in North America and in France. This French Canadian family traces back to Jacques Desmoulins dit Lagiroflée and Marguerite Feray (Ferré) who were married in France (I still have to find their marriage in France) and their son Michel Desmoulins who married Judith Bigras 15 Feb 1729 at Pointe-Claire, Montréal. The parents of Judith Bigrass were Francois Bigras and Marie Brunet who had married 31 Aug 1693 at Notre Dame in Montréal. Both being fairly ancient Quebec families.

The Larente dit Vinet family post also receives attention both in North America and France. Barthelémi Vinet dit Larente married Etiennette Alton 13 Jun 1672 at Montréal and this family too is quite interesting and another early Quebec family with both sets of parents of this couple being born and married in France.

The tenth post is on the Moggridge-Moggeridge family of West Somerset and Philip Moggridge, a researcher, living still in England has assisted me a great deal with this family and referred to one of my blogs with a post on his which likely resulted in this particular post being popular.

I had written this up before we went off to France and forgot to post it. It will help to jog my memory to occasionally look at the statistics and to check my comments as I sometimes forget to do that.

Will of Joan Moggeridge, Widow, Nettlecombe, Somerset - The National Archives PROB 11/177/35, probated 4 May 1638

Johan Moggeridge is the testatrix and she lived at Nettlecombe, Somerset. This parish is 3 miles south west of Williton and 15 miles west of Taunton. To place it in the area where my Moggeridge family was known to live, Nettlecombe is 5 miles south east of Dunster, 8 miles ESE of Wootton Courtenay, 10 miles ESE of Selworthy and 12 miles ESE of Porlock.

She is perhaps quite elderly as her will is nuncupative. Cleanger Devon is likely Clayhanger. Holcombe Rogus is also in Devon. The brother of the testatrix is named as Thomas Stone and her nephew Alexander Stone and they live at Holcombe Rogus. The Mannyng family of Nettlecombe is also mentioned – Grace daughter of John. Chipstable Somerset is 7 miles from Nettlecombe where the Merch family lives also mentioned in the will. The Knowell family at Milverton is also mentioned. Her sister Grace lives at Holcombe (perhaps Rogus) and is the wife of John Helling. John Mannyng is her executor.

The National Archives (UK) has a document 1936 M/L/138 dated 1671 which has the following information 1. John Bluett, 2. Mary Clarke and William Franckpitt, Holcombe Rogus. Premises: Alexander Stone’s messuage Term: 1 life, Rent: 1 s 4 d, Fine £10

Searched through the PCC wills looking for the Stone, Helling, Knowell, Merch and Manning families mentioned above but did not see anything worth pursuing at this time. It does lend credence to the idea that the Moggeridge family was back and forth between North Devon and West Somerset.

I have since then acquired a number of new wills including:

Blake at Record Offices not PCC which all the above Blake are

namely from Dorset, Hampshire, London, Westminster, Gloucestershire Record Offices

482 wills

Family Search I still have 21 wills to transcribe

Total number of wills is an amazing number:  1109 wills

A busy job ahead for me still but I remain dedicated to complete all the Blake wills that I am able to transcribe but with summer coming on I can see my time will be shortened somewhat as I have a couple of other projects that I want to complete so finishing by the end of December for the PCC wills might work but definitely not for all the new wills that I have acquired.

Siderfin - 2

Today I continued with my pursuit of the Siderfin Family. Using Martin Southwood's excellent transcriptions (credit is as given on the webpages), I continued looking at the small villages around Selworthy and discovered, much to my surprise, Symon Mogridge (s/o David and Emmet) baptized at Culbone 28 Mar 1686. There are a number of Mogridge family members there and a number of burials which includes a Simon Mogridge in 1715. I know there was a Simon Mogridge baptized at Porlock in 1645 and it is this Mogridge which I now find at Culbone. Since I know that Symon went on to marry Mary Phelp 9 Feb 1724 at Selworthy and that he was buried at Selworthy 9 Nov 1766 I have no doubt of his existence! Finding him has been more of a challenge so that was a very rewarding search. He had a younger brother who died at a very young age. I could not find a marriage for David and Emmet but this is a usual name for the Mogridge family at Porlock (David). I have two Moggridge lines. Symon Mogridge and Mary Phelp's daughter Sarah married John Rew and his paternal grandmother was Grace Moggeridge (so many different spellings). Grace was baptized at Porlock 2 Dec 1668 and the daughter of Robert Moggeridge and Elizabeth Snow. Robert and Elizabeth were married 26 Nov 1659 at Porlock Somerset. There was a large Moggeridge/Mogridge/Moggridge family at Porlock and I need to draw them out. I bought the Porlock registers a few years back but haven't worked on them very much yet.

I appear to be moving away from the Siderfin family with all of this chit-chat but it was Elizabeth Siderfin who married John Rew (son of John Rew and Sarah Moggridge). Hence the very strong interest plus the Rew family was found at Wootton Courtney where Elizabeth was baptized and the debate is on whether she is baptized at Wootton Courtney because of the Rew family or because of the Siderfin family.

Another researcher believes that James Hooper Sanders (author of the book on the Siderfin Family published in 1912) is descended from Elizabeth's eldest brother John. At the moment I have John married to Joan Adams but there is merit to what he is saying. If John Siderfin married Sarah Clark then the idea that my family is found at Knowle makes sense as this is the John Siderfin at Knowle. However, it then makes the grandfather of the book author Robert Siderfin a second cousin to my 2x great grandmother. For a family that tended to pass down family information this is a surprise. Plus we do not own a copy of the book in our family. However, my family did emigrate to Canada but two of the author's aunts emigrated as well - one to the USA and one to Australia and I know that the Australian family has a copy of the book. I am rather mystified and will continue drawing out the old information on the Siderfin family.

I was concentrating on the 1800s and willing to go with the family tree but definitely I think this does need to be sorted out. Obviously in his family his grandfather had a strong interest in family history and would have known who his grandfather was and that brings us all the way back to 1824 and the father of the groom is on the marriage registration. So we are back to the 1788 Thomas Siderfin and there is a will that helps out there to bring us back one more generation to the John in question. Really the question is who is the father of the John who married Joan Adams and who is the father of the John who married Sarah Clark. That will be something that I will be looking at this next week to try and solve that mystery.

In actual fact it doesn't affect my line at all as I go straight back from Elizabeth (Betsy) Siderfin baptized 19 Jun 1759 at Wootton Courtney whose parents were Robert Siderfin (baptized 23 Jun 1726 at Cutcombe) and Grace Kent (baptized 21 Apr 1731 at Selworthy). Why was Robert baptized at Cutcombe - his mother was from Cutcombe (at least Augustine Siderfin and Mary Davies were married there 29 Apr 1720). Why did Robert and Grace go to Wotton Courtney - Augustine Siderfin was still alive in 1759 at Wootton Courtney although the older children were all baptized at Selworthy. But Augustine's mother was Elizabeth and perhaps my 3x great grandmother was named after her and they decided to take her to Wootton Courtney to baptize her there to please him. Who knows!

Tomorrow I will continue to look at the Siderfin family.
