This week's ancestor challenge is one of my great finds. I could remember my Grandfather talking about his ancestral line and knew my way backwards from his father Edward to his father John to his father Thomas and then I thought I remembered that his father was Joseph. But I wasn't sure. I bought the parish register fiche for Upper Clatford (and Andover, Abbots Ann, and Kimpton) in 2008 but prior to that I had found on the BVRII from the LDS that there was a Joseph Blake married to a Joanna King  8 Jun 1757 at Upper Clatford. This was the only Blake marriage at Upper Clatford in this time frame and my grandfather thought his families had been at Upper Clatford for a very very long time. In essence he was correct some of his lines have been in the Upper Clatford area for centuries and centuries back to the beginning of the parish registers there.

However the LDS didn't at that time carry all the Andover information for the children of the children of Joseph and Joanna. Buying the parish records for Upper Clatford was such a good idea. I found my Grandfather's baptism (including his date of birth although I already owned the birth registration anyway) readily but did not find my father's which was a surprise although in retrospect I could remember that my father had said he was baptized at Kimpton (and it was there in the records in 1904). I also found the baptism for Edward my great grandfather in 1845, then his father John's baptism in 1798. Then back to 1767 for the baptism of Thomas - John's father. Thomas was baptized posthumously as his father died five months earlier and just two weeks apart from his son Thomas who was then six years old. Now that was a surprise as Grandpa had not mentioned that I am fairly sure. He had mentioned a number of baby deaths in Thomas' children and that had stuck in my mind. So probably he did not know that there had been two babies named Thomas.

Back to Joseph and the reward for buying the parish register fiche was discovering that Joseph Blake was of Andover as noted by the priest and not of the parish of Upper Clatford (Joanna was the daughter of Thomas King and baptized at Upper Clatford but more on Joanna later). One has to be quite careful with this Joseph Blake. There was a Joseph Blake in this time frame who was educated at Oxford and I knew that this was not my Joseph although they shared a similar time frame and location and eventually I discovered they had common ancestry several generations back.

I learn a little about Joseph from Thomas King's will in 1762:

In the Name of God Amen. I Tho[ma]s King of

Upp[er] Clatford in the county of Southampton, Farmer being sick and weak in

Body but of sound and perfect mind and memory do this twenty ninth day of September

in the year of our Lord one thousand seven Hundred and sixty two make and

ordain this my Last Will and Testament in manner following. ....And as for my temporal 

Estate I give and Bequeath in manner following

Item I give and Bequath to Mary Blake – daughter of John Blake of Abbotts

Ann malster one guinea Item to Tho[ma]s Blake son of Joseph Blake of

Upp[er] Clatford Six and thirty shillings Item to Ann Blake Daughter of the

said Joseph Blake Six and Thirty Shillings to be paid by my Executor

herein after named within one month after my decease All the rest of my

Joseph Blake the Sole Executor named in the above written Will ....

Thomas only mentions one of his two grandchildren in the will. Thomas is an infant at the time of writing (the first Thomas who died in 1767). A number of people connect to this first Thomas even though they have his death date in 1767. Some have written to me and I have given them the correct linkage. I wonder if it is because he wants to remember both of his grand daughters and more on that towards the end of this story.

Thomas also only mentions his son in law although his daughter Joanna is living and will have three more children.  His daughter Mary was married to John Blake and she was buried at Abbots Ann. The memorial stone is very difficult to read and her burial was in February but the year is not distinct. However he didn't mention his daughter Joanna who was alive so not particularly illuminating. 

Thomas King was married to Mary Carter and the parents of Joseph were Thomas Blake and Ann Carter. Research on the Carter family has led me to Richard Carter and Elizabeth Musprett who married 4 Aug 1701 at Andover and baptized two daughters at Andover Mary 27 Feb 1711 and Ann 18 Nov 1713. Although the distance between Upper Clatford and Andover is short the Blake family lived at the north end of Andover closest to Penton Mewsey and one wonders how they all met in retrospect. John Blake was in Abbots Ann before he married Mary King although they married at Upper Clatford as well 15 Dec 1753. What prompted these two Blake males to marry the daughters of Thomas and Mary Carter at Upper Clatford?  John was older than Joseph; probably born around 1714 and likely the son of Robert Carter and Elizabeth Russell of Abbots Ann (formerly of Penton Mewsey and before that Andover!). 

Joseph was baptized 21 Oct 1730 at Andover the son of Thomas Blake and Ann Carter who were themselves married 8 Dec 1728 at Penton Mewsey. I have struggled with this set of marriage lines but now feel confident for reasons outlined earlier in my blog that indeed Joseph's father Thomas is the Thomas who married Ann Carter. In 1734 the infant Thomas Blake (son of Thomas and Ann Blake) and his mother Ann are buried at Penton Mewsey the 22 Dec 1734 and the 20 Dec 1734 respectively. The baptism of Thomas Blake (father of Joseph) was 4 May 1709 at Andover the son of Thomas Blake and Mary Spring and they were married 6 Nov 1708 at Andover and Thomas is the only child baptized to them. Thomas (father of Thomas) was buried 29 Jan 1714 at Andover and Mary (Spring) Blake was buried 2 Apr 1734 also at Andover. It is curious that Ann and Thomas were buried at Penton Mewsey but perhaps There is a Blake plot there although the parish registers do not go back this far unfortunately. Thomas (buried 1714) was baptized 21 Feb 1685 at Andover. His parents were John and Elizabeth Blake (Elizabeth's birth surname is unknown even after eight years of searching for it) and their marriage is not in the parish registers for Andover (likely they married around 1683/4 as their first child was baptized 6 Feb 1684 and buried 15 Feb 1684 at Andover (old calendar). John\s baptism was recorded by his father William 10 May 1649 in the Andover Parish Registers but this Blake family lived at Penton Mewsey. John was the second son of William Blake and Ann Hellier who were married 5 Sep 1644 at Andover. The older brother William remains unknown at this time but could he be the father of Robert Blake who married Elizabeth Russell at Andover 15 Jul 1694?

I had not thought of that before so is a new avenue to explore for the Blake family at Abbots Ann. 

Joseph died young at 37 years of age just  two weeks before his son Thomas who had been baptized 29 Mar 1761 at Upper Clatford. No mention of the cause of death for either of them but there were measles epidemics at this time in Upper Clatford as mentioned in the story on John Coleman.

King Family at Upper Clatford and Abbotts Ann

Joanna King married Joseph Blake 8 Jun 1757 at Upper Clatford and the marriage lines read:

Joseph Blake of Andover and Joanna King of this parish were married [8 Jun 1757].

No extra information other than the parish but I do find it interesting that the priest has recorded that Joseph was from Andover. Initially I wondered if Joseph had been sent off to Upper Clatford to help Thomas King with his farm since Thomas did not have any sons. But now as I look at the record I wonder if this was simply an arranged marriage and I need to look harder at the mother of Joseph (Thomas Blake married Ann Carter at Penton Mewsey 8 Dec 1728 and these were the parents of Joseph Blake). Thomas and Ann named their first son Joseph and although this is a name used in the Blake family since the marriage of Elener Blake and Joseph Hinxman 10 Dec 1610 with the first Joseph Blake baptized 14 Nov 1644 and the son of Mr. Richard Blake and Joanne Dashford. This Richard was the eldest son of Mr. William Blake and Dorothy Madgwick who were themselves married 6 Feb 1606 at Andover. It was the aunt of William Blake who married Joseph Hinxman. Richard did not name a son Joseph but it is not surprising that a grandson would do so in that Joseph Hinxman was by far one of the most important people in Andover (Lord of the Manor of Foxcott) in the 1600s. The next Joseph Blake I found baptized at Andover 24 Feb 1702 married Mary Holdway 11 Feb 1730 at Penton Mewsey and was the son of John Blake and Elizabeth (son of a brother of Richard married to Joanne Dashford). I have inserted the Mr. because it tells me something about this family which from the mid 1500s to the mid 1600s were a substantial family in Andover but appear to have dropped down from Mr. to yeoman status and then eventually down to labourer. Part of the cause I suspect in my line is the early death of Thomas Blake in 1714 (father of Thomas Blake married to Ann Carter) with his widow raising their only child.

Family lore helps a little at this point as the story was that Ann (Carter) Blake and her son Thomas lived in a cottage at Foxcott. What Thomas did for a living I have absolutely no idea and there are no records thus far to add to that lack of knowledge.

But how to look at this King family? The King family at Upper Clatford is quite large. They were farmers and millers at this small village 1 mile south of Andover. My direct line was a farmer and Joseph continued on the land with his widow Joanna eventually marrying Thomas Collins who farmed beside the Blake family (about two years after his wife Joanna died in 1779 with their marriage in 1781). Always the question, is my Thomas King related to the other King families at Upper Clatford.

In 1665 at Upper Clatford there were three King families and one King widow - Stephen King, William King and Thomas King. A son born to Thomas and Abigaill King that I had initially thought might be my Thomas but he was buried as a young child. However, the records as mentioned earlier are somewhat scanty in the early 1700s in Upper Clatford.  Find my Past does have new records up however, so I will give a check there once again. Probate Records on Find my Past for King but I have already found the will of this Thomas King and I have a copy.  Checking to see if anyone else is researching this family on World Connect and Ancestry with no new information.

I had decided I would look at the Carter wills to see if I can work anything out and I have several Carter wills in electronic and in paper form. I am curious if the marriage of Richard Carter and Elizabeth Musprett 4 Aug 1701 with daughters Mary baptized 27 Feb 1711 at Andover and Ann baptized 18 Nov 1713 at Andover are the wives of Thomas King and Thomas Blake respectively. If I can prove this (and it is likely that Richard was a son of Gyles Carter) then I think it might be possible that John Blake who married the eldest daughter of Thomas and Mary King (Mary) may have been related to Thomas Blake although this doesn't necessarily follow it might help to answer a few questions on all of these families. Perhaps the biggest one is why did Joseph Blake who lived at Andover go to Upper Clatford and marry Joanna King - were their mothers sisters?

I think I will start with the will of Martha Carter  and she was the widow of Robert Carter grocer in as much as I can ascertain at this point in time. I have not yet read the will. I believe this is in one of Martha's children's own handwriting and I am working from a xeroxed copy - perhaps Mary Carter although it is duly witnessed and signed. I do not think this is my direct line but it helps to establish what the sons of Gyles Carter were doing as he is the best known of the Carter family in this time interval. I suspect that Richard may be his son but need to eliminate other possibilities.

In the Andover parish Register

There are three daughters baptized to Robert Carter and Martha between 1692 and 1701 - Mary (d 1692), Katherine and Mary. I have not yet found the marriage of Robert Carter and Martha but it does not appear to have taken place at Andover. Robert was a Grocer and left a will in 1725. Neither Robert nor Martha were buried at Andover.

Interesting will and also interesting that Robert King is one of his witnesses.
However, I now know that the Robert and Martha Carter family are not the parents of Ann Carter but I am still left to wonder if they are the parents of Mary Carter who married Thomas King.

My next research day I shall continue transcribing the Carter wills.

Proofreading Upper Clatford Parish Registers continues

I have now completed Parish Register 2 and I am  now working on Parish Register 4 (marriages and banns) from 1754 to 1812. I should complete them in the next couple of hours and then I will do Parish Register 3 which begins with a copying of Parish Register 2 and then completes the Baptisms and Burials from 1777 to 1812. I hope to complete this task today and I will send it off to the OPC Hampshire webpages for inclusion there. I know that Linda and Tony have mentioned they are busy but hopefully Penton Mewsey will soon be up (available on my webpages: http://www.kipp-blake-families.ca/elizabethmain.htm#BLAKE     along with the Parish Registers of Knights Enham).

One of my other Blake researchers with whom I correspond asked for my Andover Parish Register so I decided to send it off to her (it is from the beginning of the register late 1580s to 1757). It is a very large file and I have discussed with Linda and Tony Knight the idea of putting it up although not yet proofread. They are keen to do so and I will send it off to them as well on the weekend.

Then I can begin the Abbotts Ann Parish Registers. I am most interested in this parish. John Blake lived there at least from the mid 1750s to 1796 when he is buried there. Will I be able to discover anything about the Blake family in the early registers? I am hoping I might get a few ideas but will have to wait and see on that.

With two King sisters (Mary married John Blake and Joanna married Joseph Blake) marrying Blake men I must admit to wondering if the two Blake men were related other than their children being first cousins to each other. John Blake's only child Mary died in childbirth about a year after her marriage in 1780. Joseph's children are mentioned in the will of John Blake with Ann receiving special interest in that she was living in Abbotts Ann possibly taking care of her uncle. Impossible to tell from the will although one could suspect that. Thomas, her brother and my 3x great grandfather) is living at Upper Clatford (and he is married to Sarah Coleman) and he has three children although the will was dated 1792 and Thomas only just married that year. Interestingly Sarah Coleman is descended from the Coleman family who were Inn keepers at Goodworth Clatford and the Pearce family who were Inn keepers at Abbotts Ann. Considering John Blake was a malster this certainly leads to interesting thinking. Hence my strong desire to transcribe the parish registers of Abbotts Ann next. William the only other child of the Joseph Blake/Joanna King marriage lives at Andover.

Then there is the Carter family where Mary Carter married Thomas King (parents of Mary and Joanna (married to John Blake and Joseph Blake respectively)) and Ann Carter married Thomas Blake. I do not know if they were sisters. There are two sisters Mary and Ann in the family of Richard Carter and Elizabeth Musprett at Andover. One wonders if this has been the reason that Joseph Blake ends up in Upper Clatford since he lived at Andover. If Thomas and Mary King were his aunt and uncle one can see that that might happen. How does John Blake fit in? Why does he go to Upper Clatford for his wife (Mary King)? It is an intriguing query and I am not sure that the Manor Books will necessarily help me with this one except that Thomas King was a farmer at Upper Clatford.

Elizabeth Blake daughter of Robert Blake and Elizabeth Russell

Noted yesterday the death of an Elizabeth Blake in 1713 at Andover. If this was the daughter of Robert Blake and Elizabeth Russell born in 1695 then she would have been 18 in 1713. Robert and Elizabeth were still baptizing children and they could have had another Elizabeth. Need to look for that possibility and still no baptism for Charles Blake who married Mary Prince at Abbots Ann in 1737. However, John Blake malster at Abbots Ann fits nicely into this family with his birth in 1714 (he was 82 when he died in 1796). A sister Mary married William Marshman (Marshmont) in 1727 and that fits into this family. The other researcher mentioned yesterday found a marriage with Edward Gilbert of a Mary Marshmont in 1752 at Abbots Ann. There is a Mary Gilbert mentioned in the will.

I still feel that the language of the will shows a closer relationship between Charles Blake and the testator than between my Blake family at Upper Clatford. Sorting through the data, this John is my 3x great grandfather Thomas Blake's uncle by marriage. His mother Joanna King and John's wife Mary King are sisters and daughters of Thomas King. This is a good find and collaborates my earlier thinking that the language of the will was that of an uncle towards his niece and nephews. Helpful but not a direct "blood" tie.

Unraveling the mysteries presented in John Blake's will may help to solve the mystery of the parentage of Charles Blake and it comes closer to fruition I rather think. Ever since I found the will at the Hampshire Record Office and transcribed it I felt it was a key to my family lines at Upper Clatford. Although I am still just back to 5x great grandfather Thomas King and his wife Mary Carter who married 10 Jan 1728 at Upper Clatford, I now have the link between this family and the Blake family at Abbots Ann. I now know that Joanna wife of Joseph Blake and Mary wife of John Blake were sisters. What other information will the will provide me personally? The mention of the Beaver family is interesting as well. It is a descendant of the Beaver family that marries Thomas Blake son of Joseph and Joanna Blake - Sarah Coleman whose grandmother was Dinah Bever. Is the notation in front of Beavers "The"? Very difficult to tell and her married name was Coleman - why would he have referred to the children of Dinah as "The Beavers"?  At this time there were three of them still living and he leaves three guineas! The father of Sarah had died in 1780. Why would John remember this family. The father of Dinah Beaver was Anthony Beaver and mother was Susanna Johnson. Likely the father of Susanna was Roger Johnson and this was an old family at Upper Clatford.

I continue working on the transcription of the Upper Clatford Parish Register 1 with the burials and I have completed to the beginning of 1708 with 600 burials from the beginning of the Registers (1570).  The same families continue at Upper Clatford that have been there from the beginning of the Register. The King family is very large but I have not yet located a Thomas that could be my ancestor. I have not yet located a Carter that could be my ancestor either. The only Carter on the Hearth Tax is Thomas. But there are more Carter families there baptizing children:  Henry and Elizabeth, John and Jane, William and Jone, and Thomas and Elizabeth. Perhaps they live closeby in a smaller village but baptize their children at Upper Clatford.

I am still trying to decide if I have accumulated enough evidence to say that the Thomas Blake who married Ann Carter at Penton Mewsey 8 Sep 1728 are my 5x great grandparents and the parents of Joseph Blake baptized at Andover 21 Oct 1730. The death of Anne Blake and her burial 20 Sep 1734 along with the burial of her son Thomas 22 Sep 1734 at Penton Mewsey is rather revealing. The baptism of Thomas 19 Sep 1734 at Andover (son of Thomas (Ann is not listed)) whereas Joseph is baptized as the son of Thomas and Ann also at Andover also leads one to think this is the same family. Also given that grandfather John was baptized at Penton Mewsey although the baptism is entered into the Andover Parish Register. I feel now that I can accept this marriage as correct between Thomas Blake and Ann Carter. The next mystery to solve for me is the Carter family. Are Mary Carter mother of Joanna King and Ann Carter mother of Joseph Blake related? Are Joanna and Joseph first cousins?

Are Richard Carter and Elizabeth Musprett the parents of Ann Carter?; they are baptizing an Ann 13 Nov 1713 at Andover. They baptize four daughters at Andover: Elizabeth (b 22 Apr 1702), Sarah (b 21 May 1703), Mary (b 27 Feb 1711), and Anne (b 13 Nov 1713) as well as Richard (b 13 Dec 1704), Thomas (b 15 Jun 1707), Josiah (b 21 Dec 1708),  John (b 26 Apr 1717). The names are interesting with respect to Mary Carter who married Thomas King and their children were named Mary, Elizabeth and Joanna. Ann Carter married to Thomas Blake did not have any daughters. Given that Ann died in 1734 you might have expected to see Mary (Carter) King call a child Ann but the next two girls are named Elizabeth and Joanna. Interesting though to look at names. Richard Carter and Elizabeth Musprett named their first son Richard and their first daughter Elizabeth. I will investigate to see if Richard might be the son of Thomas Carter though given that the second son is named Thomas. The second daughter was called Sarah so could investigate Elizabeth Musprett having Sarah as her mother. Interestingly there is an Elizabeth Musprat baptized 20 Feb 1682 at Andover the daughter of Thomas Musprat.
