Mathew Blake, the testator, is married to Mary and their usual place of residence is Deptford, Kent. I find a Mathew Blake baptized 16 Dec 1688 at Saint Mary the Virgin Dover, Kent son of William and Elizabeth Blake.

Mathew Blake married Mary Brown 26 Feb 1719 and located in the Clandestine Marriage Register. Both bride and groom were of Deptford.  Given that this is old style dating, Mathew then prepared his will just six weeks after he was married. I did not find any children baptized to this couple.

Two marriages for William and Elizabeth:

William Blake married Elizabeth Horndell 29 Dec 1686 at St James, Duke’s Place, London, England

Hawkinge Kent to Dover Kent is eight miles.

There was a baptism for a William Blake 21 Jul 1659 at St Nicholas Deptford son of John Blake Another baptism 18 May 1665 at Graveney Kent for William Kent son of William and Elizabeth Blake and a third 24 Feb 1661 at Chilham, Kent son of William Blake.

Charles Blake, the testator, was married to Henrietta Maria Lloyd. He died 18 Mar 1732 at Queenstown, Queen Ann, Maryland Province (currently Maryland, USA). They had four children

Charles Blake, the testator, was the son of Charles Blake and Dorothy Sayer. Charles (the father) left his will dated 7 Oct 1832 and had knowledge of his son’s death prior to that time. In Charles’, the testator) will he mentions property which his father has given him leave to sell and expressed a desire that his father do sell this property and the money to come to his children as proposed in the will. I will transcribe Charles’ father’s will next.

Charles Blake, the testator, is born in England likely as his father is still living there.

Online trees suggest that Charles Blake married Henrietta Maria Lloyd in London, England but I could not find a verification of this marriage in the records in London but they could have married at a “Peculiar” Parish.

This is one of the “founding” Blake lines in the United States. There is information on the Lloyd family in “Adventurers of Purse and Person, Virginia, 1607-1624/5: Families G - P; edited by John Frederick Dorman and published by the Genealogical Publishing Company.

From this particular book:  Henrietta Maria Lloyd was the daughter of  Philemon Lloyd and Henrietta Maria (Neale) Bennett (widow of Richard Bennett).  She married Charles Blake who came to Maryland about 1685 and settled at Wye River. Their children named in this book: John Sayer Blake, Philemon Charles Blake, Henrietta Maria Blake (married (unknown) Stringfellow); and Dorothy (married to Charles Carroll).

The Lloyd family arrived in Maryland as early as 1623/24 and on 30 Mar 1636 he received a patent for 400 acres in the westernmost branch of Elizabeth River.

None of the lines are traced down in any tree that I have found thus far but there were sons of John Sayer Blake living at the time of the writing of his will.

At this time I will not attempt to follow these lines down but looking at the 1790 US census in Maryland there are eleven Blake families listed.  Charles Blake, John S Blake and Philomon C Blake all at Queen Annes as three separate families, George Blake and Thomas Blake at Worcester, Isaac Blake at North Susquehannah, John Blake, William Blake and William Blake at Talbot, William Blake at Dorchester and William Blake at Baltimore Town.

The next will to transcribe will be that of the possible father of the present testator.

Will of Jane Blake widow of All Harrows Barking, London - National Archives PROB 11/343/27, probated 23 Oct 1673

The testator Jane Blake has been married three times with George Blake being her last husband. Her first marriage was to Steven Tickner 25 Jan 1624 at Saint Benet Pauls Wharf, London, England (M00136-1 Family Search). Possibly the baptism of their second son Stephen Tickner was 23 Sep 1627 at Saint Matthew Friday Street, London, England (P00150-1 Family Search). Thomas was the oldest possibly but did not find a baptism for Thomas Tickner

A page from Boyd's Inhabitants of London for Simon Maton of St Matthew Friday St and he was married 21 May 1637 at Stepney Midd to Jane Tickner widow of Stephen of St Matthew Friday St (Simon was a girdler). Simon's will was dated 1651. Simon and Jane had one daughter Jane baptized 18 Jul 1638. In the will it appears that Jane married Thomas Bell although the record on George's page in Boyd's Inhabitants of London indicated that Elizabeth married Thomas Bell. The IGI does indicate that Thomas Bell married Elizabeth Blake 9 May 1665 at Saint Martin Orgar and Saint Clement Eastcheap, London (M00139-1 Family Search). I must admit that I wonder if the marriage for Thomas Bell is correct. They have five children by 1673 although certainly not impossible but George doesn't mention these children. I wonder if Jane/Elizabeth is Jane Maton daughter of Simon Maton and Jane (Noell) (Ticknor) Maton and finally Blake.

It is interesting to have two wills that fit together although we do not learn very much about the Blake family in London from this will. Edward Noell is likely a brother to Jane as her maiden name was Noell.

On 13 February 1681/2 the Old Artillery Ground was granted in perpetuity to George Bradbury and Edward Noell for £5,700, with licence to build new houses on the same. It was described as the Old Artillery Ground or Old Artillery Garden in or near the parish of St. Botolph's, Bishopsgate, and on the west side of fields or places commonly called Spitalfields, containing five acres and one rood, now encompassed with a brick wall; the buildings are described much as in l681. A rent of 6s. 8d. was reserved. (ref. 62) In subsequent deeds George Bradbury is described as of the Middle Temple, esquire, and Edward Noell as of the Inner Temple, gentleman. They were probably associated with Barbon in this grant, as the subsequent building leases were usually made by Bradbury and Noell together with Barbon and John Parsons. (fn. i)

Will of George Blake, Citizen and Draper of London - National Archives PROB 11/341/7, probated 25 Jan 1672/73

George Blake Citizen and Draper of the City of London is testator of this will. He is married to Jane and she is his second wife and he is her third husband. George mentions his daughters Martha and Mary and his sons Thomas and John. There is perhaps another child as he mentions his grand daughter Mary Bishop.

The will of his wife Jane Blake will follow this one.

Information was obtained from Boyds Inhabitants of London and Family Search. The marriage of Edward Holden and Mary Blake was celebrated 27 Jun 1662 at All Hallows Barking. Mary was born in 1621 according to Boyds Inhabitants of London and George. The amazing item perhaps is that Mary has had seven children in ten years (and she was 41 when she married). Edward Holden is a woollen draper.

Boyd's Inhabitants of London shows the family of George Blake (All Hallows Barking) and his second wife was Jane (daughter of Noel) Matin/Maton widow of Simon (George and Jane married 14 Mar 1653 at St Augustin and St Faith). George is a citizen and draper free 1653 March 20 by redemption merchant. His children are Thomas, John, Elizabeth married 1665 to Thomas Bell, unknown daughter married to Thomas Thynne, Martha married to unknown Turner and Mary married 1662 to Edward Holding.  Will is mentioned on the facing page for George:  Will All Hallows Barking, wife Jane exix, sons Thomas and John, son in law Thomas Bell of London merchant, Thomas Thynne of London Merchant (not sure if the will is actually saying that he is a son in law), daughter Martha Turner, daughter Mary Holding, witness Susan Barnes, Perry Lloyd, John Hill SCR, 9 May 1665, Thomas Bell of Whitechapel and Elizabeth Blake of S Andrew Holborn at St Martin Orgar (perhaps this is their marriage). A note about his will 1673 PCC  and his wife's will Jane 1673 (dead 1674).

Will of Stephen Blake, of Bentworth, PROB 11/1829/430, probated 19 Sep 1821

Stephen Blake (the testator) married Mary Vicary at Lasham, Hampshire 6 Jan 1766. Stephen was buried at Bentworth Hampshire 30 Apr 1821 and he was 81 years of age (born circa 1740). The Bank of England Wills Extracts (1717-1845) list Stephen Blake as a Taylor of Bentworth Hants. According to the Will Extract No 74783 fo 1095 Sworn under £2000, Stephen Blake of Bentworth Hants, Taylor, died possessed of £1400, 5 per cent Navy 109 1/4 £1529 - 10 -  and by his will dated 2nd September 1819 attested by three Witnesses with a Codicil without Date attested by Two Witnesses appointed his Nephew William Blake and James Vickery Executors to whom Probate was granted at Doctors Commons 19th Sep 1821. In the Will are the Following Words: I give and devise the Sum of One Thousand Four hundred Pounds in the Navy five per Cents together with all and every other Interests or Securities for Money I may die possessed of to my Nephews William Blake and James Vickery their Executors and Administrators In trust.

Then 1470 New 3 1/2 25 May 31 N Benton £1400 Navy to be transferred to William Blake (the Testator's nephew) and James Vickery the devisees in trust and executors and left at their disposal S. Hyatt.

From Stephen's will we can see that he has a brother William and a nephew William Blake. The nieces will need to be sorted out but some are on his wife's side. James Vickery is his wife's nephew although Stephen calls him his nephew. Stephen Vickery is his godson and son of James Vickery and the other children are not named but I shall check family search to see if I can find them. He calls Mary Green and Sarah Brown his nieces so will check for a Mary  Blake and definitely Sarah is Sarah Blake as she is William's daughter. Charles appears to be the son of Jenny Blake. Ann Lloyd is a niece of his wife so she was Ann Cowdry  and her mother Elizabeth Vicary. Ann has a daughter Jane Croswell so she was Jane Lloyd and will try to locate these people on Family Search. Then James Vickery, Stephen Green and William Blake are all nephews with Stephen's mother being Mary Green. There is also a Jane Harris who is the daughter of his wife Mary's brother George. All of these details may help to assemble this family.

Bentworth itself is in what I would call southern Hampshire and not far from Preston Candover where I know that some Blake family members lived. Was this Blake family always at Bentworth? Stephen is 81 years old when he is buried so born circa 1740. Again I am not sure if he is in my direct line as there wasn't a Stephen Blake in the 1730 to 1750 time period with grandparent/great grandparent John Blake married to Elizabeth (unknown) in the lines that I know but if he is descended from William the only son about whom I do not have any information then that is a possibility but he does live quite far from Andover relatively speaking. On the other hand the Charles Blake family at Abbots Ann were found at Preston Candover but again he was born in 1740 and I only have one son for Charles Blake and Mary Prince - Charles married to Jane Gilbert.  But the register is hard to read and I haven't reached that point yet.

There is a Sarah Blake baptized daughter of William and Mary Blake 10 Aug 1760 at North Waltham (Lasham and Brentworth are eight miles east south east of North Waltham).

52    at the death of my wife provided she survives me I give the like sum
53    of five pounds for the same purpose but if she should die before me I
54    then direct that instead of five pounds the sum of ten pounds be
55    distributed in Bread at two several times to the poor of the said parish
56    I give to my wife all the ready money that may be in the house at
57    the time of my decease for her own use and benefit after the payment of
58    my funeral expences as aforesaid I hereby appoint my nephew William
59    Blake and my niece Sarah Brown and Mary Green my residuary
60    legatees and I hereby also appoint my nephews William Blake and James
61    Vickery joint executors to this my will In witness whereof I have hereunto
