Will of James Blake otherwise Blacke, Seaman belonging to the Marlborough India Ship - The National Archives PROB 11/844, probated 15 Mar 1759

There are a few records on Family Search of interest but not possible to separate out the correct family readily. The spelling of Blake is somewhat different in this Scot records.

Will of Hannah Blake, widow, late of Blandford Forum, Dorset and now at Bath, Somerset - The National Archives PROB 11/1235/252, probated 28 Aug 1793

This rather lengthy ten page will (in the copy books!) was written by Hannah Blake, widow of William Blake whose will was blogged earlier:

http://kippeeb.blogspot.ca/2013/09/will-of-william-blake-esquire-of.html

Again, all the nieces and nephews of William and Hannah are remembered in Hannah’s will as well. Although Hannah does not mention relationships at the beginning of the will bringing that in later.

William Blake and Hannah Clench were married by licence 25 Nov 1746 at Blandford. They do not appear to have baptized any children. They were married for 47 years. Although Hannah does not mention any relationship between herself and the Clench family to whom she gives legacies, they are perhaps relatives. Some of the other names not mentioned in the will of William are also perhaps her relatives including the Soper family, the Giles family, the Edmunds family and the Vowell family. Hannah has followed her husband’s will and the legacies which he intended for his various nieces and nephews have been expressed in her will.

This family is a known collateral line of Admiral Robert Blake. William Blake was the son of the Reverend Malachi Blake who was in turn the son of the Reverend Malachi Blake, then John Blake of Pitminster, John Blake of Pitminster, William Blake of Over Stowey and Pitminster, John Blake the elder of Over Stowey and then Humphrey Blake of Bishops Lydeard and Over Stowey. John Blake the elder and Robert Blake being siblings and Robert Blake was the grandfather of Admiral Robert Blake.

Admiral Robert Blake [101] is the 2nd cousin 4 times removed of William Blake (husband of the testatrix) [525]

356    and
    [Page 8]
357    and Walter Smith of the same City recorder and by
358    virtue of their several Corporal Oaths deposed as follows
359    and first the said Charles Gunning deposed that he was
360    employed by Hannah Blake Testator of Bath widow lately now
361    deceased in ordering and preparing for the said deceased her
362    last Will and Testament hereunto annexed bearing date the
363    tenth day of May one thousand seven hundred and ninety
364    three that the deponent Charles Gunning attended the said
365    deceased on the said tenth day of May one thousand seven
366    Hundred and ninety three with the said will fairly expressed
367    which amongst other things then contained a Legacy or
368    bequest of five hundred pounds to Ann White of Walthamstow
369    in the County of Essex Spinster Sister of William Wood White of
370    the same place and also a Legacy or bequest of two hundred
371    pounds to John Clench of Bridport in the County of Dorset
372    Sadler which two Legacies or bequests were inserted in this
373    said Will agreeably to Instructions previously given by the
374    said deceased to Charles Gunning That the deponent Charles
375    Gunning on the same day read over the said Will to the said
376    deceased audibly and distinctly and she expressed herself
377    perfectly satisfied therewith in every respect there as to the said
378    Legacy to Ann White which she directed the deponent Charles
379    Gunning to alter from five hundred pounds to one thousand
380    pounds in consideration of the great attention which the said
381    Ann White had long paid to her and particularly in her
382    illness of which the said deceased then expressed a sense of
383    high obligation that in consequence of such direction from
384    the said deceased that this deponent Charles Gunning set about
385    making the desired alteration in the said Ann Whites
386    Legacy and made an erasure in the seventeenth line from the
387    top of the first sheet of the said Will upon which erasure he
388    then wrote the words one thousand meaning and apprehending
389    that he had thereby increased the said Legacy to the said Ann
390    White after which the deponent Charles Gunning wrote the
391    following words in the Clause of Attestation for the Witnesses
392    on the last Sheet of the said Will to wit the words one thousand
393    in the Legacy to Miss White being first wrote on an Erazure
394    and then the said deceased duly executed the said will in the
395    presence of the deponent Charles Gunning and the other
396    subscribing Witnesses whose names appear thereto namely
397    Robert Norkett and the said deponent Walter Smith and at
398    the time of executing the same the deponent Charles Gunning
399    is certain from the circumstances hereinbefore deposed that
400    the said deceased believed as he himself did that the said
401    Legacy of Five hundred pounds originally inserted therein
402    to the aforesaid Ann White had been erased and altered
403    into a Legacy of one thousand pounds and the said depon[en]t
404    Walter Smith deposed that he believed the same for that the
405    said deponent Charles Gunning showed to him the said
406    Deponent Walter Smith the said Erazure and alteration prior
407    to the deceased executing the said Will and bid him the said
    [Page 9]
408    eeponent Walter Smith and the said Robert Norkett the other
409    subscribing witness take notice thereof and the said deponent
410    Charles Gunning deposed that the said deceased then believed
411    that the Legacy of two hundred pounds to the aforesaid John
412    Clench originally inserted in the said Will remained unaltered
413    She having expressed no wish or intention to increase or alter
414    the Legacy to him and that it was with a firm belief and
415    persuasion of the Will being altered by an increase of the
416    said Ann Whites Legacy and not otherwise that she was
417    satisfied therewith And the deponent Charles Gunning further
418    saith that immediately after the will was executed it was
419    Sealed up by the deponent Charles Gunning and remained
420    Sealed up until after the said deceaseds death at which time
421    and not before it was discovered by the deponent Charles Gunning
422    that he had inadvertently made the Erazure and alteration
423    in the Clause respecting the said John Clench’s Legacy instead
424    of that to the said Ann White which the deceased designed and
425    ordered to be altered for it doth now appear that the words
426    two hundred have been erased in the seventeenth line instead
427    of the words Five hundred in the next preceding line and
428    that the words one thousand have been inserted on such
429    Erazure instead of being inserted in the sixteenth line in the
430    stead of the said words of five hundred which should have
431    been there erased and in confirmation and illustration of
432    what he so deposed relative to the state of the Legacies to the
433    said Ann White and John Clench as originally inserted in the
434    said Will before any erasure or alteration took place the
435    deponent Charles Gunning doth annex hereunto a form or
436    cancelled will of the said deceased in which prior to the
437    making her last Will the deponent Charles Gunning made
438    such alterations and additions as she wished to be made
439    converting the said cancelled Will in a draught for her
440    Will and the said deponents Charles Gunning and Walter
441    Smith further depose solemnly that the said last Will of the
442    said deceased dated the tenth day of May one thousand
443    seven hundred and ninety three was transcribed and fairly
444    copied from the said cancelled Will not hereunto annexed
445    and that the Legacy inserted in the aforesaid seventeenth line
446    of the first sheet of the said Will as a bequest to the said John
447    Clench was originally a Bequest of Two hundred pounds the
448    same as that in the twenty fourth line from the top of the
449    first Sheet of the annexed cancelled Will and the same deponent
450    Charles Gunning further deposes that the Codicil to the Will
451    of the said deceased executed by her on the sixth day of
452    June last was drawn and prepared by him this deponent
453    and in the Instructions for the same received by him from
454    the said deceased she directed him amongst other things to
455    make a bequest of one hundred pounds to the said John
456    Clench in addition to the Legacy of Two hundred pounds
457    which she had bequeathed to him by the Will and the said
458    Deponent Charles Gunning further deposes that the said
459    Codicil was read over to the said deceased prior to the
460    execution
    [Page 10]
461    execution thereof audibly whereby she well knew and
462    understood what was therein expressed of and concerning
463    the Legacy bequeathed to the said John Clench in and by
464    her Will and all other the contents of the said Codicil and
465    she declared her satisfaction with and approbation thereof
466    and the said deponent Charles Gunning lastly saith that
467    in drawing the said Codicil he made reference to the
468    aforesaid cancelled will for the Recitals mentioned in the
469    Codicil and not to the original Will itself which remained
470    Sealed up in the said deceaseds possession Char[le]s Gunning
471    Wa: Smith The said Charles Gunning and Walter
472    Smith were duly sworn to the truth of this Affidavit in
473    virtue of the Commission thereunto annexed Before me Thomas
474    Head Dowson
475    This Will with a Codicil was proved at London
476    the twenty eighth day of August in the year of our Lord

Will of John Blake, yeoman, of Lanreth, Cornwall - The National Archives PROB 11/231/346, probated 22 Jun 1653

John Blake the testator is the husband of Johane Blake whose will was blogged yesterday. Good fortune with this set of wills as John identifies similar people although again does not clearly say how he is related to some of them. Fortunately putting the wills together gives a slightly clearer picture of this Blake family at Lanreath.

He does mention Henry Blake who also lived at Lanreath in this time period and was married to Lowdye Helman 15 Jun 1619. He also mentions a Jonathan Blake although does not identify either of these men as his brothers. Jonathan Blake has a son John. Henry Blake has children: Charity, Joane, John, and Jonathan. He also mentions a White family, a Caren family and the children of his sister Watson. Also the Heare family, the Cowling, Collin[g] family and the Wilcock family.

John Cowling is known to be his nephew from his wife's will. Does he mention sister Watson because she is deceased and he is remembering her children?

From the LDS there was a John Blake baptized 20 Nov 1568 son of Thomas Blake. Also, relating to the will there was a John Blake son of Jonathan Blake baptized 17 Sep 1619 also at |Lanreath.

There are a number of children baptized by John Blake at Lanreath on the IGI:

William baptized 9 Nov 1567
Henry baptized 18 Mar 1569
Elizabeth baptized 29 Oct 1572

A little information on this Blake family but can not yet link them altogether; perhaps later wills will assist.

Will of William Blake, Gentleman of Saint Thomas, Winchester, Hampshire - National Archives PROB 11/635/263, probated 7 Feb 1730

William Blake has basically left his entire estate to charity. According to the Burials at St Matthew's Church, Weeke Mr. William Blake was buried 11 Dec 1729 and he was said to be of St Thomas in Winchester. This same online register does not list the burial of his wife although he mentions that she was buried at Weeke in his will. Genuki only lists the one Church of England with a graveyard (St Matthew on Stockbridge Road). Weeke is only ten miles from Goodworth Clatford which is just south of Upper Clatford and Andover is just across the main road from Upper Clatford. I need to do that to put these places into perspective with my own Blake line.

Charity of William Blake for Charity School.

In 1738, William Blake by his will proved in the P.C.C. founded and endowed a charity school in this parish. (fn. 21) The endowments consist of school, schoolhouse and premises in hand; a farm at Sheet in the parish of Petersfield, of 53 acres of arable land, and 6 acres of meadow; 11 acres or thereabouts of common allotted under Sheet Inclosure Award in respect of the above lands; a farm at Noah Hill in the parish of Newton Valence, consisting of 81 a. 2 r. 29 p. of arable land, 4½ acres of coppice, and 5¼ acres of pasture. The farms produce an annual income of about £145. The official trustees also hold £288 17s. 10d. consols arising in part from sale of land and in part from investment of accumulations.

The trust is administered under a scheme approved 1 May, 1890.
Charity of William Blake for Poor.

The same testator by his will directed that £200 should be laid out in the purchase of land, the yearly income to be applied for the benefit of the poor of the parish. This was laid out in the purchase of 10½ acres at Rogate, Sussex, let at £15 a year. The official trustees also hold a sum of £120 6s. 10d. consols in trust for this charity. The income is applied in the distribution of coal, 5s. being paid to the sexton for tolling the church bell as per will of donor.

CHARITIES
The Parliamentary Returns of Charities for the poor dated 1786 mention that — Godwin gave £40 for the poor. In 1729 William Blake by his will left £100, the income to be disposed of among the poor on 22 July yearly, in memory of his wife's death, the clerk to have 5s. for his pains.

This William Blake has a nephew Henry Blake and a niece Ruth Blake and a god daughter Alice Fielder plus a cousin John Goldfinch. Searching find my past there is a marriage of a John Goldfinch to Sarah Cornish at Compton Hampshire in 1697. Compton is 2 miles south west of Winchester so definitely in the area of Weeke which is just 1.25 miles north west of Winchester. There is a John Goldfinch buried at Compton 3 Apr 1744. There are two burials for Sarah Goldfinch 18 May 1742 and 3 Dec 1746 both at Compton. No births for John Goldfinch that would fit into this area. Likely looking for a mother whose surname was Blake but not necessarily.

No luck looking for baptisms/births for Ruth and Henry Blake. The Fielder is interesting but again nothing conclusive. Perhaps there will be another will that might help link William Blake with one of the families in this area.

Pincombe and Blake

The last few days have produced a flurry of activity in my two main one name studies - Blake and Pincombe. I received emails from two descendants of each of these families that have provoked more thought on their lines.

In the case of the Pincombe family, the email request is from Australia and I am still learning about the Pincombe family now located in Australia. My 2x great grandfather's brother George went to Australia and died there. He did not have any children whilst living there though so I would be going back one more generation to find anyone in Australia related to me (5th cousin or greater likely). The person in question was a William Pincombe who married Emma White at the parish church of St Pancras in 1852. Fortunately I do have that marriage and know that his father was George Pincombe (deceased in 1852) and Giles White was the father of Emma also deceased in 1852. There was a substantial Pincombe/Pinkham family in Middlesex in this time period that was descendant of Arthur Pincombe who had migrated to Middlesex in the 1700s. It will be this family that I will investigate initially as the family lore says that William was born in Middlesex but there is also some controversy which may have him born in Devon. Since the records in Australia (thus far) indicate Middlesex my effort will be directed towards the family that is known to me in Middlesex and descendant of Arthur Pincombe who was christened 26 Dec 1761 at Robourough by Torrington and buried 19 Apr 1823 at St Mary Whitechapel, Stepney, London. Arthur married twice, first Elizabeth Milton 13 Oct 1784 at St James Westminster, London  and second Ann Smale. From his second marriage, there was a son George Pincombe baptized 29 Aug 1802 at St Mary Whitechapel. I will first either eliminate or prove that this is the George for whom we are looking.

In the case of the Blake family, I have been corresponding with a descendant of the Charles Blake family living in the United States. Probably I have received more requests about this particular Blake line than any other from individuals who live all over the world including never having left England. Charles Blake appears in the Abbots Ann, Hampshire, England records that are available on the FamilySearch site first with his marriage to Mary Prince 4 Sep 1736. Mary was the daughter of James Prince and Ruth Burger. Charles was buried 28 Oct 1783 at Abbots Ann. They had only one child recorded in FamilySearch and I am still in the process of transcribing Abbots Ann so have not found any more either. Their son Charles was baptized 24 Jun 1737 at Abbots Ann and buried there 31 Oct 1800. Charles married twice.

His first wife was Jane Gilbert (baptized 3 Oct 1740 at Abbots Ann) and Jane was also descended from the Blake family through her father John Gilbert. John Gilbert was the son of John Gilbert and Sarah Kidgell with Sarah being baptized 28 Mar 1690 at Abbots Ann (married to John 3 Feb 1707 at Abbots Ann). Sarah's father was Richard Kidgell baptized 24 Sep 1661 and Richard's father was John Kidgell. John's father's name was Kidgell and his mother was Elizabeth Blake. This Elizabeth Blake was the daughter of unknown Blake married to Elizabeth Hinxman (baptized 17 Jul 1593 at Andover). My suspicion is that the unknown Blake was the son of Thomas Blake (brother to my Richard Blake). The brother of Elizabeth Blake was a merchant at Oxford according to his mother's will of 1688.

The second wife of Charles was Hannah Powell and they were married 17 Aug 1779 at Abbots Ann. From the two marriages there were nine sons in total who lived to adulthood. I have corresponded with descendants of a number of these sons but not all of them.

A will left by John Blake malster at Abbots Ann is full of genealogical information and can be found on my website. Both my ancestor Thomas Blake at Upper Clatford and Charles Blake are mentioned in the will with considerably more attention (and bequests) being paid to the descendants of Charles Blake making me think that there is more of a blood connection to John. I do know the connection to John for my Thomas as he was his uncle. The mother of Thomas was Joanna King and it was her sister Mary King that married John Blake malster at Abbots Ann. Whether or not I am also related to John Blake on the Blake side is unknown to me at this time.

I then extracted the Poor Law Records for Abbots Ann to find the Blake family there and indeed there was a Robert Blake there as early as 1727 when he was Churchwarden and paying the poor rate. The lands on which he paid this tax ended up being later assessed to Charles and John Blake leading me to suspect that Charles and John were sons of Robert Blake. Perhaps aiding with matching up families is the entry of 1812 where Ann Blake (sister to my Thomas) is paying the poor rate as per the terms of John's will where Ann was to remain on the property with various codicils pertaining to that.

There was a Robert Blake married to Elizabeth Russell 15 Jul 1694 at Andover where they baptized:

Blake Sarah       daughter       Blake Robert Elizabeth 1696 March 10
Blake Joannah   daughter       Blake Robert Elizabeth 1700 February 12
Blake Mary        daughter       Blake Robert Elizabeth 1702 December 21
Blake Edward     son               Blake Robert Elizabeth 1711 August 12
Blake Thomas     son               Blake Robert Elizabeth 1714 July 2
Blake Jane          daughter        Blake Robert Elizabeth 1717 July 22

There is the rather large gap between 1702 and 1711 where the birth of Charles could have occurred but where is the question. Edward does appear on this list and he is also in the tax list at Abbots Ann living on Coles which was formerly held by Robert Blake. I did find a John Blake baptized to Robert 22 Feb 1714 at Penton Mewsey (he was born 14 Feb 1714) but the priest has not given the mother's name unfortunately. This does appear to be rather close to the baptism of Thomas on July 2 but February would follow July as this is old calendar  but it is still only seven months later. However, it is a possibility. But still no Charles baptism found yet. The Abbots Ann parish registers are still in the process and the period that I am most interested in is very faint and poorly organized unfortunately. Plus I am only up to 1613 in the register thus far.

The ongoing debate for me is which to put first. I would like to complete my proofreading of Bishops Nympton and have those records online to reduce the number of requests for this information but I am also quite dedicated to the idea of transcribing Abbots Ann which is just one set of registers for the Andover Registration District that I am working on.

I must admit that I tend to always mention yDNA testing to people these days because I do believe that is the only way to sort these families in both of my one name studies.
