An interesting will for Margaret Blake. Her mother was Charlotte Cartwright and that would fill in why her eldest son John has the middle name Cartwright. The online tree that has Sarah Cartwright as the mother of John would then appear to be incorrect as his mother would have been Margaret Cartwright and John identified his wife as Margaret in his will blogged earlier:

Margaret identifies her children as Margaret Kitson and Henrietta Shuckburgh as her two remaining daughters. Ann, her other daughter left her will which was blogged:

Margaret doesn’t mention her sons John Cartwright Blake or Robert Blake. However, her will does show the Cartwright line clearly.

Will of Margaret Blake, widow, New Sarum, Wiltshire - The National Archives PROB 11/1281/243, probated 29 Nov 1796
Margaret Blake, the Testatrix, is the wife of John Blake whose will was probated in 1775 and was blogged a couple of days ago:

No new information on this family, she mentions her son John Blake and her daughters Mary Rothwell, [Susanna] Sterne and Peggy Blake.
Thomas Blake, the deponent, who gave witness to the handwriting and subscription of Margaret Blake is of Wishford (presumably Great Wishford) and just trying to place him in context of this family. In the blog:

there is mention of a Thomas Blake baptized 10 Mar 1592 at Great Wishford with father John Blake and the hint in that post that he might be descendant of the Blake family at South Newton. By the time of this will though it would have to be a descendant of this Thomas Blake. Is this Thomas a relative?

Joseph Blake is the testator and it is a rather interesting will. He names his brother as Nicholas and two sisters Bridget and Marie. His mother has either been married before she married Blake or remarried as he has siblings with the surname Chauncery. His grandmother is Joane Pitman and he has an Uncle possibly John Pitman who signed as witness. He mentions Enham and does he mean Knights Enham. I can not find him in Charlou Dolan’s writeup on the Robert Blake family of Enham. I have transcribed the parish registers for Knights Enham but they do not begin until after 1675.

He does not appear in the Andover Parish Registers (transcribed up to 1757 but not yet published).

Will of John Blake, Gentleman, New Sarum, Wiltshire - The National Archives PROB 11/1004/155, probated 17 Jan 1775
It just seemed rather untidy not to do the will of John Blake, 1775, at Salisbury so acquired that one yesteday morning from the website instead of going back through my downloads. That was going to be a long process and it would be nice to finish Wiltshire by the end of December. The last will was not too bad for reading and this one looks pretty good thus far although it is five pages.
Again the Testator John Blake is known in that he was the father of John Blake whose will was blogged:

Is this the son of James Blake who left his will in 1733/34 which was blogged:

James does mention property on Castle Street in New Sarum. If James is the father of the present testator then the testator would be 74 years of age. Given that he already has a number of grand children that is entirely possible. Plus one of the marriage records for John’s children show him to be a grocer at Salisbury. In that case then this family is likely from Great Wishford (James baptism), which is only 5 miles northwest of Salisbury. How far back does this family go in this area of Great Wishford?
John, the Testator, has greatly increased his holdings during his lifetime compared to the will of his possible father James.
The marriage of John Blake, bachelor, grocer, 25 years of age, of Salisbury St Thomas and Margaret Westley, spinster, 20 years of age of Salisbury St Thomas was celebrated 15 Jun 1726 at Choulderton. Bondsman John Westley, clothier, St Thomas Salisbury. Cholderton is close to the Hampshire border about ten miles from Salisbury. Why Cholderton? A mystery but one that registers in the back of my mind since it is close to the areas in which my Blake line lived
The Blake family of Andover area was moving away from the Andover area in the mid 1600s. But equally this could also be a Blake family moving away from the Calne area which they certainly did as well in the 1600s.
The marriage of Mary Blake, spinster, 26 years of age, of Salisbury St Thomas married to James Rothwell, bachelor, grocer, 22 years of age of Salisbury St Thomas celebrated 13 Jul 1756 with John Blake, grocer, Salisbury St Thomas as bondsman. This gives Mary a year of birth circa 1730 which is a reasonable date to have a father born in 1701. Plus John was a grocer as James was.
The marriage of Susanna Blake, spinster, 23 years of age of Salisbury St Thomas to William Sterne, bachelor, gentleman, 34 years of age of Salisbury St Edmund celebrated 28 Sep 1761. Susannah would have been born circa 1738. Bondsman James Lewis, clerk, Salisbury St Martin.
Both of these marriages from the Bonds issued by the Bishop of Salisbury (record created by the Wiltshire Family History Society through Find My Past).

James does mention property on Castle Street in New Sarum. If James is the father of the present testator then the testator would be 74 years of age. Given that he already has a number of grand children that is entirely possible. Plus one of the marriage records for John’s children show him to be a grocer at Salisbury. In that case then this family is likely from Great Wishford (James baptism), which is only 5 miles northwest of Salisbury. How far back does this family go in this area of Great Wishford?
John, the Testator, has greatly increased his holdings during his lifetime compared to the will of his possible father James.
The marriage of John Blake, bachelor, grocer, 25 years of age, of Salisbury St Thomas and Margaret Westley, spinster, 20 years of age of Salisbury St Thomas was celebrated 15 Jun 1726 at Choulderton. Bondsman John Westley, clothier, St Thomas Salisbury. Cholderton is close to the Hampshire border about ten miles from Salisbury. Why Cholderton? A mystery but one that registers in the back of my mind since it is close to the areas in which my Blake line lived
The Blake family of Andover area was moving away from the Andover area in the mid 1600s. But equally this could also be a Blake family moving away from the Calne area which they certainly did as well in the 1600s.
The marriage of Mary Blake, spinster, 26 years of age, of Salisbury St Thomas married to James Rothwell, bachelor, grocer, 22 years of age of Salisbury St Thomas celebrated 13 Jul 1756 with John Blake, grocer, Salisbury St Thomas as bondsman. This gives Mary a year of birth circa 1730 which is a reasonable date to have a father born in 1701. Plus John was a grocer as James was.
The marriage of Susanna Blake, spinster, 23 years of age of Salisbury St Thomas to William Sterne, bachelor, gentleman, 34 years of age of Salisbury St Edmund celebrated 28 Sep 1761. Susannah would have been born circa 1738. Bondsman James Lewis, clerk, Salisbury St Martin.
Both of these marriages from the Bonds issued by the Bishop of Salisbury (record created by the Wiltshire Family History Society through Find My Past).

John Blake is the testator and already know as the father of Ann Blake who left her will dated 11 Mar 1812 and blogged earlier:

John, the testator, names his wife as Margaret whereas online trees suggest that the wife of John Blake was Sarah Cartwright (second name of the eldest son John was Cartwright) but John could have married a second time (could not locate any information in that regard). John identifies his children as John Cartwright Blake, Robert Blake, Ann Blake, Margaret (married to Edward Addicott Kitson) and Henrietta (married to Charles William Shuckburg stated in Ann’s will). This does prove that the book A Genealogical and Heraldic History of the Commoners of Great Britain, Volume 2, by John Burke was correct in naming Henrietta’s father as John.

John, the testator, names his wife as Margaret whereas online trees suggest that the wife of John Blake was Sarah Cartwright (second name of the eldest son John was Cartwright) but John could have married a second time (could not locate any information in that regard). John identifies his children as John Cartwright Blake, Robert Blake, Ann Blake, Margaret (married to Edward Addicott Kitson) and Henrietta (married to Charles William Shuckburg stated in Ann’s will). This does prove that the book A Genealogical and Heraldic History of the Commoners of Great Britain, Volume 2, by John Burke was correct in naming Henrietta’s father as John.

James Blake is the Testator. He names his wife Jane and his sons John and Charles and his daughters Elizabeth, Jane and Susannah.
He is likely the James Blake married to Jane Edwards in 1695 at Urchfont, Wiltshire (Family Search Patron Entry). Free BMD has the licence Bond (Sarum Marriage) giving the following details for the marriage in 1695 between James Blake, Salisbury, bachelor, grocer, 24 years of age and Jane Edwards, Salisbury, spinster, 23 years of age and that they married at Urchfont/Patney. Bondsman was Timothy Edwards, tailor, Salisbury.

This family grouping does resemble the wife and children of James the Testator mentioned in the will (James, eldest son and Edward, youngest son are not mentioned so possibly deceased). One wonders if Elizabeth has formed a friendship which is not deemed suitable by her father judging by the funding he will provide if she marries.
One possibility for the testator is James Blake baptized 2 Feb 1670 at Great Wishford, Wiltshire son of John Blake. There is also a James Blake baptized 4 Dec 1667 at Burbage, Wiltshire son of John and Jane Blake. A third possibility is James Blake baptized 15 Nov 1665 at Saint Thomas Salisbury son of Thomas and Ann Blake (less likely as no sons are named Thomas). A fourth possibility is James Blake baptized June 1767 at St Edmunds Salisbury son of Nicholas Blake (also less likely given no sons named Nicholas). All of these records from Family Search.
Urchfont where James Blake married Jane Edwards in 1695 is 19 miles north of Salisbury and 14 miles north of Great Wishford. Burbage is 12 miles east.
James age is stated to be 24 years in 1695 so he was born circa 1671 and the most likely candidate from the baptisms is James Blake baptized at Great Wishford and son of John Blake.

A third possibility is James Blake baptized 15 Nov 1665 at Saint Thomas Salisbury son of Thomas and Ann Blake (less likely as no sons are named Thomas). A fourth possibility is James Blake baptized June 1767 at St Edmunds Salisbury son of Nicholas Blake (also less likely given no sons named Nicholas). All of these records from Family Search.
Urchfont where James Blake married Jane Edwards in 1695 is 19 miles north of Salisbury and 14 miles north of Great Wishford. Burbage is 12 miles east.
James age is stated to be 24 years in 1695 so he was born circa 1671 and the most likely candidate from the baptisms is James Blake baptized at Great Wishford and son of John Blake.

Will of Charles Blake, Upholsterer, Salisbury, Wiltshire - The National Archives PROB 11/375/449, probated 8 Apr 1684
The testator, Charles Blake, would appear to be the grandson of Charles Blake whose will was blogged yesterday. Charles identifies his father as Charles Blake of Chilhampton.
Charles, the testator, identifies his brothers as Richard Blake and Christopher Blake and his sisters as Mary Chalke, Ann Chase and Martha Blake. He has a cousin Charles Gilbert that is rather interesting to me.
Discovering the origins of the Blake family at South Newton could be rather revealing for the Blake families found in the Wiltshire/Hampshire area especially given that the Gilbert family and the Blake family also intermarried at Andover.
His father Charles Blake is still living in l684 and he was known to have been baptized at South Newton 2 Oct 1631. His marriage lines I have not yet found but if he married by 1652 then this son could be as old as 31. He does not have a wife so is probably a fairly young adult perhaps only in his mid 20s although he is in business as an upholsterer.

Charles, the testator, identifies his brothers as Richard Blake and Christopher Blake and his sisters as Mary Chalke, Ann Chase and Martha Blake. He has a cousin Charles Gilbert that is rather interesting to me.
Discovering the origins of the Blake family at South Newton could be rather revealing for the Blake families found in the Wiltshire/Hampshire area especially given that the Gilbert family and the Blake family also intermarried at Andover.
His father Charles Blake is still living in l684 and he was known to have been baptized at South Newton 2 Oct 1631. His marriage lines I have not yet found but if he married by 1652 then this son could be as old as 31. He does not have a wife so is probably a fairly young adult perhaps only in his mid 20s although he is in business as an upholsterer.
