Will of Elizabeth Blake, wife of Long Parish, Hampshire - The National Archives PROB 11/307/513, probated 3 Apr 1662

Elizabeth Blake is married to Nicholas Blake of Long Parish and it is possible that her maiden name was Sadler.

This will was in litigation C 6/21/94 (document at The National Archives) and is Kent versus Thomas with the plaintiff Richard Kent and the defendants Nicholas Thomas and other. This is the answer only to that litigation and it is dated 1662.

A second litigation C 6/48/53 (document at The National Archives) and is Goddard versus Kent with plaintiffs Katherine Goddard, Jane Goddard and Elizabeth Goddard and defendants (unknown) Smithe, Richard Kent, Nicholas Thomas, Mary Thomas wife of Nicholas and again the will of the deceased Elizabeth Blake. The document type is the bill and two answers and is dated 1664.

A third litigation C 6/48/99 (document at The National Archives) and is Pembridge versus Thomas with plaintiffs Jane Pembridge, Elizabeth Pembridge and Mary Pembridge with defendants Nicholas Thomas, Mary Thomas his wife and Richard Kent. The document type is answer and schedule. The date is 1651-1681 but would be at least 1662 – 1681 so is probably part of a larger package with these dates.

In an earlier will Richard Blake of Tower Ward London mentioned his godson Richard Blake of Long Parish (1643) and was blogged:

http://kippeeb.blogspot.ca/2011/02/richard-blake-will-of-23-mar-1643.html

Is this Nicholas Blake a son of Richard and Jone Blake of Andover. Richard died in 1622 and left his will in which he mentions property at Forton which he is giving to his son Nicholas. Forton is one of the townships in Longparish. This would mean that he is the Nicholas Blake baptized 27 Mar 1604 at Andover and buried at Andover 16 Mar 1677. I have not to date found a marriage for him but do not have the parish registers for Long Parish yet.

http://kippeeb.blogspot.ca/2013/08/will-of-richard-blake-linen-draper-of.html

The sister of Nicholas Blake, Elinor Hinxman, mentioned her brother in her will of 1657 and he was living at Gavelacre which is in the vill of Forton thus placing him again in this area close to the time of the will of 1662. I have not published the Hinxman wills so must do that one of these days “…..And I nominate, and appoint my brother Mr Nicholas Blake of Galliger and my cozen Mr Peter Blake of Andover Overseers of this my last Will and Testament desiring them to be ayding and assisting to my Executor in the performance hereof ….”

British History Online has a write up for Richard Blake’s holding of property at Gavelacre in Forton:

http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.aspx?compid=56843

Richard Blake, who died in 1623[sic 1622], held a messuage called 'Chamberlaynes hold,' and others there, of Cecily Lady De La Warr as of her manor of Wherwell (fn. 42) ; and premises in Forton are repeatedly mentioned in the later conveyances of Longparish Manor. There is a lot of information on Nicholas Blake of Gavelacre which will be mentioned as I have a few indentures that refer to him. To date though, I have not yet found a will for him. There are a number of documents in which he is involved as trustee and grantee but no will thus far. The will could be attached to property that preceded directly to his right heir so no probate but there should be an entry showing the passage of the property from him to his heir or if he sold it. I do not have any children for Nicholas. Learning more about Nicholas could be helpful for my personal research as it is his nephew William to whom he first mortgaged property at Andover and later for a particular sum of 5 shillings cleared the mortgage of 50+ pounds in 1649. This was at East Field and West Field. William himself died in 1696 also not leaving a will.

This is an excellent will to learn about the family of Elizabeth Blake as she names her siblings and the children of her siblings.

Names mentioned in the will:

Mr Nicholas Blake, husband of the testatrix, Long Parish
Anthony Pembridge, great nephew
Jane Pembridge, great niece
Mary Pembridge, great niece
Elizabeth Pembridge, great niece
Mary Pembridge, niece
Edward Kent, great nephew
Richard Kent, great nephew
John Kent, great nephew
Joane Kent, great niece
Elizabeth Kent, great niece
Richard Kent, nephew, executor
Michaell Goddard, great nephew
Katherine Goddard, great niece
Jane Goddard, great niece
Elizabeth Goddard, great niece
Katherine Goddard, niece
Charitie Thomas, goddaughter
Mr Nicholas Thomas, kinsman
Samuel Collins
William Sadler, brother
Robert Sadler, brother
Anthony Pembridge, cousin (is this the husband of her niece Mary?)
Robert Goddard, cousin (is this the husband of her niece Katherine?)
Richard Kent, cousin (same as executor, husband of unnamed niece?)
Richard Miller, cousin
Anne Sadler, cousin (child of her brother?)
Joane Sadler, cousin (child of her brother?)
William Sadler, cousin (child of her brother?)
Martha Hopkins
John Hayes, clerk, witness
Elizabeth Gale, witness

Interesting that she has chosen the Church at Nether Wallop in which to be buried. An interesting set of wills for the Gore family of Nether Wallop which mentions “my brother in law Mr Robert Sadler” and was written 22 Jan 1655 and proved 29 Mar 1656.

http://genforum.genealogy.com/gore/messages/1757.html

There is apparently a pedigree for the Sadler family on page 163 in the Visitation of Wiltshire 1623. The children of Robert Sadler of Salthorp (sic Salthrop), Wiltshire married to Grace the daughter of Henry Sadler son of Radulphi Sadler, knight, are listed as Robert Sadler son and heir aged 15 years in 1623, Henry aged 13 years in 1623, William aged 12 years in 1623, Elizabeth aged 11 years in 1623 and Anna aged 10 years in 1623. If indeed this is Elizabeth’s family, then Elizabeth would have been born circa 1612 and 50 years of age when her will was written. She does not mention her sister Anna or brother Henry but does mention her brothers Robert and William. Salthorp is near Everleigh/Everley Wiltshire which is 5 miles north west of Ludgershall and the road from Andover passes through Everleigh. Queen Elizabeth gave the manor to Sir Ralph Sadler. Ralph is the grandfather of Grace who was the likely mother of Elizabeth wife of Nicholas Blake. Nether Wallop is thirteen miles from Everleigh and ten miles from Longparish.

My daughter has speeded up the publication of this blog as she helped me to find Salthrop.

Will of John Lywood, Esquire, Barton Stacey - The National Archives PROB 11/1776/81, probated 3 Sep 1830

John Lywood (testator) was married to Elizabeth Bennett 6 Dec 1798 at Froyle, Hampshire.

Their children (and all are mentioned in the will below):

John baptized 7 Nov 1799 (born 4 Oct 1799) Andover
Elizabeth baptized 29 Sep 1803 (born 30 Aug 1803) Andover
Leonard baptized 23 Feb 1802 (born 18 Aug 1801) Andover
Mary baptized 25 Jul 1806 (born 4 Apr 1806) Andover

John Lywood married Elizabeth Dowling 1 Jan 1823 at Goodworth Clatford
Elizabeth Lywood married John Lewis 10 Jan 1822 at Barton Stacey
Leonard Lywood married Anne Courtney 9 Nov 1830 at Barton Stacey
Mary Lywood married Anthony Mist Lewis 7 Jul 1825 at Barton Stacey

There are four possibilities for the parents of John Lywood (Testator) on Find My Past (and the first one is eliminated by the last leaving two possibilities one at Knights Enham and one at Chawton):

John Lywood baptized 16 Aug 1752 and the son of Jesse and Mary Lywood at Nether Wallop (married 22 Dec 1760 Jesse Lywood and Mary Cook (widow) at Nether Wallop)
John Lywood baptized 15 Sep 1757 and the son of John and Mary Lywood at Knights Enham (married 21 Oct 1756 John Lywood and Mary Pearce at Knights Enham)
John Lywood baptized 9 May 1760 and the son of John and Ann Lywood at Chawton (married 10 Jul 1759 John Lywood and Ann Cousins at Chawton)
John Lywood baptized 2 Mar 1777 and the son of John and Ruth Lywood at Houghton (married 13 May 1776 John Lywood and Ruth Warwick at Nether Wallop)

Knights Enham is interesting being so close to Andover. However, Froyle where they married is only 4.3 miles NE of Chawton and Andover is 25 miles East of Froyle. So no guesses here on that one!

The will might give us some information on his origins if he mentions siblings. Barton Stacey is 5.5 miles south east of Andover just to place this location. He does not however mention any family other than his children and wife in his will below.

I have no ideas on the ancestry of this Lywood family but I vaguely recall Warwick mentioning that this Hampshire Lywood family may not share ancestry until back before the 1600s. I haven't spoken to him in at least seven years (via email) so he may have more information now and can be found on the Guild of one name studies website.

Will of John Blake - National Archives PROB 11/14/155, probated 24 Apr 1504

This will written by John Blake in 1504 is often quoted and this John is the son of Robert Blake and Avis Wallop. We know that John is 40 years or more old when his mother's estate was examined under Inquisition Post Mortem circa 1474 so he was born circa 1434 or earlier. In 1504 he would have been at least 70 years old. John was married twice and he did not leave any male heirs carrying the Blake surname. Part of the fascination for me in all of this aside from information for my one name study of the Blake family is that he lived at the time that the father of Nicholas Blake at Enham lived. Living at Nether Wallop he was only seven miles south west of Andover and we passed through the area of the Wallops on our way to Upper Clatford (1 mile south of Andover or in truth just on the opposite side of the highway these days). There is Nether Wallop and one mile to the north west is Middle Wallop and two miles to the north west is Over Wallop. Then six miles to the north east is Goodworth Clatford and also Upper Clatford which are two continuous villages - you leave the one as you enter the other. As we drove these lanes I could imagine my great grandfather walking from his home to work each day as he did all of his life. Looking at the picture of him from 1898 I can see from whom I inherited my strabismus (lazy eye syndrome) for there it is forever captured in picture the one eye wandering about on its own whilst the other is fixed on you the viewer. Inherited by me from my father. My grandfather did not have strabismus but did pass it on to his son.

His brother Robert acquires Penhills by this will (although not mentioned except in the line where it was said that Richard Dauntsey would inherit the properties in Southampton and Wiltshire with some exceptions and this was one of the exceptions) and it stays with this family up into the reign of Charles I when it was destroyed by the Royalists. A smaller manor was built from the original stones at Pinhills and the Blake family continued to live there into the 1700s.

This family can trace back on paper to the Blake family that is on the 1286 subsidy for Wiltshire and on the Pedigree Chart which is held by the Swindon Wiltshire Record Office. This rather large document (12 feet long by 4 feet wide) was commissioned by the Blake family in London, England to record their family line and was produced using primarily the Visitations but also other documents which I have not yet been able to determine. The College of Arms holds the original material for this chart and one day I will investigate the cost of receiving copies of the documents used. The College of Arms is located near St Paul's Cathedral in London just up from the London Millennium Footbridge. Something that should not be missed when visiting London is crossing on foot all of these bridges and wandering down both sides of the Thames River. The most we ever did was 18,000 steps per day and that took us from our hotel just south of Waterloo Station up into London and along the Thames to St Pauls Cathedral and back across the Thames and down into Bermondsey and then back to our hotel. A wonderful walk and we took about ten hours in total with lots of interesting stops along the way. You can take the Underground and it is a must to go to Kew, the Museums, Greenwich but to be in the City of London or Westminster the best way is to go on foot.

The Blake Pedigree Chart does have a male descendant for John Blake (son of Robert Blake and Avis Wallop). He is named David on the chart and was the son of his first wife Margaret Dyncham/Dinham/Denham. David married Joane Mallet and they had two children John Blake Abbot of Cirencester, Gloucester and William who married Margaret Browne of Wablyn. William and Margaret had two sons Martin who married Catherine Vaughan of Herefordshire and John who is said to be the ancestor of the Somerset Blake family and that Lord High Admiral Robert Blake was one of his descendants.

Robert Blake and Avis Wallop had seven children according to the Visitation. Their son Robert married Margaret Inglefield and their two children Roger and Anne married into the Baynard family. Roger married Mary Baynard.  Roger and Mary are said to have a son William Blake of Eastontown who married Avice Ripley it is this William that I have been most interested in from the viewpoint of my own family at Andover/Upper Clatford. I am not entirely convinced that he is a son of Roger Blake and Mary Baynard. Roger only mentions his eldest son and his youngest daughter in his will however.  These two items David a son of John Blake and William son of Roger and Mary Baynard must have other supporting documentation which I shall one day attempt to see. Their children of Robert Blake and Avis Wallop on the Visitation (Wiltshire Visitation Pedigrees 1623):

Gilbertus
Alexander
Robt
Elizabeth
Alice
Joane
John

Gilbert and Alexander both died without heirs. This visitation principally looks at Robert Blake descendants. Henry Blake is the individual living in 1623 at Pennells and just to place this manor it is to the WSW of Calne about 1 mile. That means it is about 29 miles from Nether Wallop (where John was to be buried) to Calne. John doesn't say in his will where he is located when he is writing his will.

John does mention his nephew Roger (son of his brother Robert although not as nephew but he is). He does mention his servants Robert Blake yeoman and John Blake (currently his servant). Servant could mean a number of things I suspect in those days. They could have been in training with him. It is just so close to Andover and Eastontown (where William Blake lived) from NetherWallop - only seven miles. Reading through the Inquisitions Post Mortem may assist with understanding the Blake family in this area even better.

Wallop is the area in which John's mother Avis Wallop lived. In the Post Mortem following her death in 1474 National Archives C 140/48/6 which I shall either purchase or have a look at when we are next there, the land that was feoffed to her and her daughter by her first husband was mentioned as well as John Blake her son being 40 years of age or more. Reading through this document could be quite interesting but the Inquisition Post Mortem for John might add more details for the Blake family.

There are a number of Inquisition Post Mortems for the Blake Family held at The National Archives:

These documents were inquiries as the title indicates and were issued by the local "escheator" (official responsible for taking possession of the estate). These include date, names of manors held and details of service and also name, age and relationship of the heir or coheir. The letter code WARD refers to records where the heir was a minor. I plan to look at these document when next at Kew.

Another interesting document for this family F3/Box 1/283 1506 and the contents: Grant from Henry VII to Philip Baynard of the wardship of Richard Dauntesey son and heir of John Dauntesey, deceased and kinsman and heir of John Blake, deceased. 28 Nov 22 Henry VII (1506).

Another item: F3/Box 1/299 1542 and the contents: Letters Patent from King Henry VIII of messuages etc in London to Richard Dauntesey Esq and Marie his wife for their lives. 20 July 34 Henry VIII (1542)
