As I work my way through all of these Buller wills I had a rather frightening thought of how good it would be to have a Buller one name study. Fortunately I was able to decide that I couldn't possibly take on such a big study. By the time I am done with these seventy wills though I will have quite a picture of the Buller family. My fingers are itching to reach Warwickshire wills as my Buller family was in St Olave Southwark and St Mary Magdalen Bermondsey when my 3x great grandfather Christopher Buller and his wife Mary Beard were having their family. Then my 2x great grandfather Henry Christopher Buller married first Sophia Scrooby and had a family of two children all of whom had died by 1836 (leaving him a widower at 31 years of age) but his butcher shop was on Lamb Conduit Way in London although he moved his family to Lambeth likely to protect them from illness but they succumbed anyway. Then I find him traveling between London and Birmingham where he married Anne Welch (she was 18 and he was 33) (my 2x great grandmother) and the two of them ran a butcher shop and restaurant in Birmingham and the butcher shop in London. Henry appears on the 1841 census in London with Anne at her parent's home in Birmingham (along with their first born child Henry Buller). Anne's father was a restaurant owner as well. I found Christopher very very early on in my research back in 2004 but have never been able to move further back on the Buller side. The Welch side proved to be quite straightforward.
The Buller family in Warwickshire is generally in the Coventry area and they were farmers. That seems a long reach for my Christopher Buller with his Slop Shop (sailor uniforms) and perhaps not quite so long for my Henry Christopher Buller and his butcher shop.
The Buller family is fairly large and the general criteria for largeness is how many on the 1881 census and there were 975 individuals with the surname Buller. Comparing that with Pincombe (one of my one name studies) at 146 individuals and Blake (my other one name study) 14,428 individuals is actually a surprise. I thought there would be more than 975. However, it is virtually impossible for me to take on Buller at the moment but perhaps I can persuade someone else to do it. They really are a very fascinating family with so many connections into old and aristocratic families in the British Isles. That isn't one of my strong interests but truly I would love to find the parent/parents of Christopher.
This Blog will talk about researching my English ancestors from Canada but also the ancestors of our son in law whose families stretch back far into Colonial French Canada. My one name study of Blake and of Pincombe also dominate my blog these days.

Henry Christopher Buller
A timely release by Find my past of the Church Records in Westminster (London, UK) has finally provided details on the first marriage of Henry Christopher Buller (my 2x great grandfather). He married Sophia Scrooby 18 Dec 1831 at St Mary Church, St Marylebone, London (Sophia was the daughter of George Scrooby and Mary Bullock and they were married 24 Jun 1798 at Saint Luke, Chelsea, London and I have found three daughters thus far Mary Ann baptized 15 Mar 1807 at St Mary Church, St Marylebone and married to Thomas Parker Steedman 5 Apr 1829 at St Marylebone (five children: Elizabeth, Sophia, James, Thomas Cornelius and Mary Ann) , Sophia baptized 24 Feb 1811 also at St Mary Church and she was buried 30 Jun 1836 at St James Westminster having died on Lambeth Walk, and Eliza baptized 16 Aug 1812 at St Mary Church (no further details but will now check the newest records).
Henry and Sophia had two children: Mary Ann baptized 15 Oct 1832 at Saint George Bloomsbury and I now know that she was buried 30 Jun 1836 at Saint James Westminster (presumably mother and daughter succumbed to the same illness) and George Scrooby baptized 1 Jun 1834 at Saint George Bloomsbury and he was buried at Whitefield Memorial Church 9 Nov 1834. I have discovered this church was near to where Henry had his butcher shop on Lamb Conduit Way. Perhaps he moved the family to Lambeth Walk away from the main city of London after George's death in 1834 only to lose them anyway from another illness. Sad really.
Henry Christopher Buller married Anne Welch (my 2x great grandparents) and on the marriage license it was noted that he was a widower. A long time in solving but I have now put together his first marriage and all the deaths prior to his second marriage 23 Aug 1838 at Edgbaston, Warwickshire. Sophia was only 26 when she was buried. Anne was only 17 years 6 months when she married Henry and they went on to have 11 children before his death in 1862 at the age of 57 years. I am slowly discovering details on this family as they seem so like modern families - they lived in London and Birmingham having butcher shops in both. I suspect there is quite a story to tell although it is difficult to piece it together from so far away. One day I would like to visit the Birmingham Library and see what kind of interesting details I can find for this couple.
It was nice to have Find My Past help me to put together Henry's families.

Buller at Bermondsey, St Olave, Greater London Area, UK
Christy Buller is identified as the husband of Mary daughter of Henry Beard in his will of 16 Sep 1795. I am still looking for this marriage although his second marriage is on Ancestry. Presumably they married at St Mary Magdalen in Bermondsey where all their children are baptized or at St Olave where they are buried. The registers for St Olave are not yet available on line so the answer to that question may lie there.
Christy was often named as executor on various family wills. His occupation was slop seller/cutter which is an individual who makes sailor uniforms. His occupation never varied from that on any of the baptismal entries for his children where the priest always recorded that information. He always lived close to Tooley Street where he has his shop (St Thomas, Bermondsey, Long Lane). His two children that died young and his wife were al buried at St Olave rather than St Mary Magdalen where they baptized their children.
But the mystery remains; who is Christy Buller? I am no further ahead with Christy Buller than I was when I first started to look at genealogy back in 2003 in terms of knowing his parent's names. I know a lot about him now including his possible year of birth. At his burial the priest noted that he was 69 years of age on 13 May 1832 giving him a possible date of birth of 1763. Mary Beard, his wife, was born 15 Dec 1767. From the will of Henry Beard I know they were married by 16 Sep 1795 and their first baptized child at St Mary Magdalen was Elizabeth Jane born 13 Feb 1796 on St Thomas St, baptized 10 Apr 1796 and she was buried 3 Dec 1797 when they were living on Charles Street (all Bermondsey).
Second child Martha Sarah Buller was born 16 Aug 1797 while they were again living on St Thomas St, baptized 10 Sep 1797 at St Mary Magdalen and she married George Caswell 29 Oct 1831 at Saint Benet Pauls Wharf. They had three sons. 1. Clement James Caswell baptized 3 Apr 1831 at Chipping Barnet Herts; he married Sarah Kirby Mar quarter 1863 at Spilsbury Lincolnshire and they did not have any children that I have found thus far. He died Sep quarter 1896 at Horncastle Lincolnshire. 2. Charles Caswell born circa 1833 London; married Maria Mar quarter 1863 at Cambridge, Cambridgeshire and again no children. He was buried Jun quarter 1`893 at St George Hanover Square, London. 3. Henry John Caswell was born circa 1836 at Islington London and died mar quarter 1865 at Spalding Lincolnshire. Martha Sarah (Buller) Caswell died Sep quarter 1872 at Spalding Lincolnshire. When I discovered this family I then understood the naming of one of the children of my ancestor Henry Christopher Buller (son of Christy Buller and Mary (Beard) Buller - they had a son named Clement Charles.
Third child Elizabeth Jane Buller was born 26 Apr 1799 living on St Thomas St, baptized 9 Jun 1799 at St Mary Magdalen. She married Edward Churchyard 31 Oct 1827 at St Dionis Backchurch, London and they had two children Edward born 1834 Blomfield Street Finsbury Circus, London and Elizabeth Jane born 1837 Blomfield Street Finsbury Circus, London. Elizabeth Jane (Buller) Churchyard died in 1837. I have not, to date, discovered anything further on these two children.
Fourth child Emma Hemsley Buller was born 21 Jul 1800 and baptized 14 Sep 1800 at St Mary Magdalen. She married Isaac Debnam first at a noncomformist Church in 1827 and second 2 Jan 1840 at St Dunstan in Stepney. They had two children Elizabeth Sarah Debnam born 4 Sep 1828 and baptized 30 Mar 1837 at Holywell Mount Independent in Shoreditch and Isaac Debnam born 18 Feb 1837 at Haggerstown, London, baptized 30 Mar 1837 at Holywell Mount Independent in Shoreditch. He married Ellen Cox 25 Jul 1858 at Shoreditch. They had six children and I am in contact with two separate lines of this family. I have given them the information on the Buller family; they did not have any.
Fifth child Henry Christy Buller was born 16 Oct 1803 while they were living on Tooley Street, London and baptized 6 Nov 1803 at St Mary Magdalen. He was buried 20 Nov 1803 at St Olave.
Sixth child was Henry Christopher Buller (my 2x great grandfather) born 30 Jan 1805 on Bermondsey St, baptized 24 Feb 1805 at St Mary Magdalen. He married twice.
Seventh child was Robert Huxley Buller born 8 Nov 1806 and baptized 28 Dec 1806 at St Mary Magdalen; buried 18 Oct 1807 at St Olave Bermondsey.
My next Buller research day I will post some of the interesting items on Christy Buller just to refresh my mind and then do a search of available repositories to see if I can glean any new information.

Thanksgiving
My weekend since coming home from Cape Cod disappeared rapidly. We had Thanksgiving here and there were the four of us plus the two dogs. We had a grand time and the bird looked very Thanksgiving like. I made a bean salad of which I am very fond, plus jellies (orange and cranberry), carrots and onions, salad tray and dip, cheese puff pastries, jam tarts, baked potatoes and yam, and then a pumpkin pie. The bird was stuffed with a bread stuffing and a sausage stuffing. The dogs enjoyed their share of thanksgiving meat as well.
I worked away on Henry Beard's will (four full pages) and completed the 191 lines of transcription. I have meant to do it for awhile and it was interesting. I had skimmed through it finding that he was the father of Mary Beard married to Christopher Buller when I first purchased it. However, it answers a number of questions about Henry Christopher Buller the only living son of Christopher and Mary Buller. When I find him in the early 1830s married to Sophia Scroope they are living on Lamb Conduit Way and he has a pork butcher shop there (purchased now I am sure by the trust in his grandfather Henry Beard's will). I wasn't sure before whether he had married into the Welch family and acquired his Butcher Shop in that way but this has clarified that completely. I am hoping that I might learn more about the Buller family through the Scrooby family that he married into. Neither child appears to have survived from the Henry and Sophia marriage and Sophia had died by 1838 when Henry remarried as a widower at Edgbaston (Anne Welch daughter of William Welch). That has certainly answered all the questions about Henry that I had hanging about with regard to his being a widower. I notice this surname (Scrooby) is quite rare when I check it out on the surname profiler.
Today I have completed the will of Henry Beard and then worked on the will of Jane Buller (Henry's widow) which continues with interesting information on Christopher Buller. I also now have the married names (including husband's name) of the two sisters of Mary Beard - Sarah and Elizabeth. Sarah married Michael Jacob Denner (also a slopcutter) listed as a Gentleman of the Isle of Dogs. Elizabeth (now widow) had married William Millin. Again the setting up of a Trust for the children of Mary Beard is paramount in her will which is not probated until 5 Jan 1822 although written in 1817. The burial that I found in the non parochial registers in 1821 is quite likely her burial. I must purchase the record in the near future. In her will she asked to be buried at Burnhill Fields in London.
I have a third will for the Beard family - Richard Beard who died in 1823. I had purchased it hoping to discover if he would mention any brothers as the individual who originally sent me the excerpt from Henry Beard's will that mentioned Christy Buller has Henry with two brothers (Richard and Edward) and one sister Sarah. I have not yet been able to verify this information as Henry does not mention any brothers. Richard's will mentions his children (and wife but not by name) Joseph George, John William, Ann Elizabeth and James Charles. Interesting to find them all with second names. Richard would appear to be a baker by trade.
Tomorrow I have to have my permanent cap put on but I will probably work on some transcriptions as I get used to the new tooth!

Buller and Beard families
The days have passed quickly since I last posted and we have spent quite a bit of it fall house cleaning and downsizing as we eliminate items that we do not use particularly - at the moment our daughter is the recipient of the small items that we purchased with her in mind over the years. We will keep items for our older daughter for her next visit to us to decide what she wants to do with them.
I continued hunting out the Buller and Beard families in the new upload at Ancestry (LMA BMBs). I found the marriage of Henry Christopher Buller and Sophia Scrooby (daughter of George Scrooby and Mary Bullock married 24 June 1798 at Saint Luke, Chelsea, London). They had three daughters Mary Ann (b 1807), Sophia (b 1811) and Eliza (b 1812). Mary Ann married Thomas Park Steedman and the witnesses were Christopher Parker and Hannah Steadman Scrooby. I haven't found a burial yet for Sophia (likely prior to 1838) but will continue looking. Henry and Sophia had two children (Henry is listed as a widower on his marriage registration with Ann Welch in 1838) Mary Ann (b 1832) and George Scrooby (b 1834). I think I have George's burial in 1847 but nothing thus far for Mary Ann. I never found any children from this first marriage in any of the records but will continue hunting out Mary Ann.
Off to the dentist to have one of my molars capped and back home again 1.5 hours later (included travel time). I will soon have all of my molars capped (this is number 5). It is good to have them capped actually as it means no more work on them in my lifetime! My teeth have actually been quite inexpensive although my husband has a dental plan anyway. I haven't had a new decay since my late teens (so nearly 45 years!) (most of my old fillings have been replaced with newer ones).
I find it hard to concentrate so decided to spend my time looking at the marriage registers in London. I am looking for the marriage of Christopher Buller and Mary Beard. I am checking the St Marylebone in Westminster as many Buller families lived in that area and it is also the area that Henry Christopher Buller used to visit on his trips back and forth to London. Also he had a butcher shop in Convent Garden on Lamb Conduit Way which is fairly closeby. I looked at all of 1794 and up to September 1795 in this parish and did find a couple of Lawrence marriages (see census 1861 for Henry) and one for Thomas Duller it looked like.
Interesting reading through the marriages in 1794 and 1795 at St Marylebone in Westminster. I did not find one for Christopher and Mary but seeing the names is also interesting. I will try some of the other parishes nearby Bermondsey to see if I can find their marriage.
We watched a couple of hours of television which was very relaxing and I shall get back to the Hinxman v Blake document tomorrow. I have completed a first run through but want to give it a proofread before I send it off to my correspondent.
