My last Coleman research day was 5 Apr 2011 and the research plan developed to move forward was to transcribe the Goodworth Clatford parish registers but only if Abbots Ann was complete. My Coleman family lived at Abbots Ann and before that Upper Clatford and prior to that at Goodworth Clatford.

Just to remind myself of my Coleman family, Sarah Coleman married Thomas Blake 10 Jun 1792 at Upper Clatford. Sarah was baptized 15 June 1773 at Abbots Ann the daughter of John Coleman and Elizabeth Pearce who were themselves married 7 Oct 1771 at Abbots Ann. Sarah and Thomas had ten children of whom the last two died (Henry and Joanna) and the fourth (Joanna) died as infants and the seventh child Sarah died at the age of three. All the rest survived to adulthood but two died rather young the sixth child George (35 years of age) and the eighth child Charlotte (31 years of age). The longest living child was Mary who lived to be 87 years of age and then John (my ancestor) who was 74 years of age when he died. Thomas the fifth child may have also been into his 70s but I haven't found his death registration yet. The remaining child, William, the eldest, was 70 years of age when he died.
Sarah died 3 Jul 1816 (her last child had been born 31 May 1816 dying 3 Jun 1816). Sarah's father John Coleman was baptized 13 Feb 1736 at Upper Clatford and he was buried 2 Jul 1780 at Upper Clatford (44 years of age). There were just the two children for John Coleman and Elizabeth Pearce - Sarah and her brother William who was baptized 12 Mar 1775 at Upper Clatford. William married Mary Wright (marriage not yet found) and they had at least one son William.
Moving further back John was the eldest son of Clement Coleman and Dinah Bever. Clement and Dinah had eight children of whom four died of measles as recorded in the Parish Registers of Upper Clatford. I have not yet traced down the remaining children other than John although I do have the Parish Registers of Upper Clatford transcribed up to 1812. A quick check of the excel file for Upper Clatford shows that the eight children were baptized at Upper Clatford but none after that time up to 1812. Burials at Upper Clatford show widow Coleman buried 20 Aug 1642, Clement Coleman buried 8 Feb 1753 and then the four children Clement buried 9 Mar 1756, Mary Elizabeth buried 13 Mar 1756, Henry buried 13 May 1763 and James the fourth child who died young is not listed and Dinah herself buried 7 May 1783. There are only two Coleman marriages at Upper Clatford - Sarah married to Thomas Blake and her mother Elizabeth Coleman (widow) married John Head 10 Oct 1781.
I can move back one more generation from Clement Coleman and he was baptized 25 Oct 1704 at Goodworth Clatford the son of Clement Coleman and Katherine Holeridge who were themselves married 6 Oct 1695 at Goodworth Clatford. They had four daughters and the one son. Their eldest daughter Katherine Coleman (baptized 3 Aug 1696 at Goodworth Clatford) married Charles Dear 10 May 1723 at Goodworth Clatford. Katherine ran an Inn at Upper Clatford and this was possibly a joint effort with Clement but the licenses for this only go back to the time after Clement died (likely before 1721). Their other daughters were Elizabeth baptized 27 Apr 1698 at Goodworth Clatford, Mary (baptism not yet located) and Ann baptized 28 Apr 1710 at Goodworth Clatford. Prior to this time I have no ideas on where the Coleman or the Holeridge family were located.
The Hampshire Record Office online catalogue has 50 wills for members of the Coleman family between 1515 and 1785 but none of them appear to be for any of the members of the Coleman family thus far known to me. Searching on Clement Coleman does not give my any records that are relevant. Any Google searches bring up my webpages for the most part.
I think perhaps my time might be best spent on the Abbots Ann Parish Registers at this stage so I will proceed using up my one hour on the Coleman family for this pursuit. When I last transcribed Abbots Ann I was at 1612 for baptisms, 1598 for marriages and 1597 for burials. The Subsidy 1571-1598 at Abbots Ann does not list any Coleman family members.
I shall keep my blog open in case I come across any interesting entries and will publish the blog after I have put in my one hour on the parish registers of Abbots Ann.
There is one missing entry in Family Search for Thomas Whicher son of Thomas Whicher baptized 2 May 1613. Occasionally there are misses in the Parish Register Transcriptions for Family Search. Although the spelling looks like Whicher I note that Whityere is a commoner name in the parish register.
Future Coleman days will be devoted to the Abbots Ann Parish Registers which is also good for my Blake one name study.

King family of Upper Clatford and area and the Will of John Blake, malster at Upper Clatford
We collected a number of King family wills whilst we were at Kew. One set of my 4x great grandparents was Joseph Blake and Joanna King. Joanna's father was Thomas King. Although I do have his will it hasn't let me separate his King line from the other King lines at Upper Clatford and area.
In my study day on the King family I will work on these particular wills. I know that Joanna and Joseph were first cousins with their mothers being Ann Carter and Mary Carter daughters of Richard Carter and Elizabeth Musprett who were married 4 Aug 1701 at Andover, Hampshire, England. Mary was baptized 27 Feb 1710 at Andover and buried 13 Apr 1744 at Upper Clatford (she was married to Thomas King 10 Jan 1727 at Upper Clatford). Ann was baptized 18 Nov 1713 at Andover and buried 20 Dec 1734 at Penton Mewsey (she was married to Thomas Blake 8 Dec 1728 at Penton Mewsey).
Another Blake family becomes involved with this grouping in that Thomas and Mary King had three daughters Mary King who married John Blake 15 Dec 1753 at Upper Clatford, Elizabeth King who died as an infant and Joanna King who married Joseph Blake 8 Jun 1757 at Upper Clatford (my 4x great grandparents). John Blake left a will at Abbots Ann where he was a maltster and it is published on my webpage and inserted below to bring my mind back again to these family lines that I want to work on with regard to my King family line and the Blake line that John is descended from as that was unknown to me but I have written in the past on my blog that I believe he is the son of Robert Blake and Elizabeth Russell:

My week has flown by too quickly as I had planned on transcribing one of the King wills yesterday on my blog but instead I will summarize my research plan for my next King research day. The will of John Blake, malster at Abbots Ann is below. The will refers to my ancestor Thomas Blake at Upper Clatford. John does not mention that he is his nephew. The Ann Blake who is mentioned is Thomas' sister and has been looking after her uncle. Ann returned to Upper Clatford after the death of Thomas' wife in childbirth in 1815. Thomas Blake's mother had remarried in 1781 (her husband died in 1767) and the farm of her father/husband and that of Thomas Collins her second husband were combined. The older brother of Thomas was in Andover at the time of writing the will and I am still working on this section of my family. I believe that the father of Joseph Blake married a second time but still looking for records to substantiate that. William has perhaps returned to Andover to take over the shop that his grandfather Thomas had not sure about that. Thomas was born posthumously five months after the death of his father Joseph. To the best of my knowledge Thomas and his second wife Hester Stephens (married 9 Feb 1751 at Andover) did not have any children. Thomas (grandfather) was buried 13 Jan 1767.

A Codicil or Schedule to a Will, made after a Will is Sealed
Be it known unto all Men by these presents. That I John
Blake of Abbotts Ann, in the County of Southampton formerly
Malster have made and declared that my last Will and Testament
in writing bearing date, the Twenty Seventh day of April, in the
Year of our Lord One Thousand Seven Hundred and Ninety-two,
I the said John Blake, do by these presents, contained in this
Codicil, confirm and ratify my said last Will and I do give and
bequeath unto Ann Blake, the Chamber over the Parlor to sleep
in, and part of the House wherein I now dwell to live in, during the
time shee keeps herself unmarried, and during the Life of
Jno Matons Wife, of Abbotts Ann, her Life being in the Living
and in the said Dwelling House, and my Will and Meaning is that this
Codicil, or Schedule be colcomed and adjudged to be part and parcel
of my Will and Testament and that all things herein contained
and mentioned, be faithfully performed in as full and ample
Manner, in every Respect, as if the same were declared and
set down in my said Will, In Witness whereof I the said

Will of Cicelie Beaver, Widow, of Kingsclere - The National Archives, probated 15 Jun 1619
The spelling of the surname in this will is Beaver and Cicelie Beaver widow lived at Ecchinswell near Kingsclere which is just 10 miles WNW of Basingstoke and 12 miles NE of Andover so again rather interesting as this is 1618 and my Anthony Beaver/Bever was probably born around 1680 (earlier or later) and I have no information on him prior to his marriage with Susanna Johnson 20 Jul 1710 at Upper Clatford. There are 25 Bever wills and 71 Beaver wills (5 of these overlap). At the time that I picked them I was choosing on the basis of location but glancing once again there are probably several interesting ones but they will wait for another time.
This is the sort of will that you wish all of your relatives would leave naming so many of her kinsmen and kinswomen. What a treasure for her family. I have no idea if she is related to my Bever/Beaver family at Upper Clatford and Goodworth Clatford. This is too early as Anthony Bever married Susanna Johnson 20 Jul 1710 at Upper Clatford nearly one hundred years later. Interesting though the reference to Fareley as one of my great grandfather's sisters married David Farley in 1853. Perhaps I should attempt to trace David back - I know his parents were John Farley and Mary Yeates who married 25 Jul 1822 at Andover.
Cicely only names her side of the family it would appear and does not mention any children. There is a Bever/Beaver family at Kingsclere on the IGI. I discovered the birth of an older brother to my Dinah Bever on the IGI Anthony baptized 5 Nov 1710 at Upper Clatford.

Coleman family at Goodworth Clatford, Upper Clatford and Abbotts Ann
I can trace my Coleman family back to Clement Coleman marrying Katherine Holeridge at Goodworth Clatford 6 Oct 1695. Prior to that date I have not yet found either of these families at Goodworth Clatford but I have the fiche for the Parish Registers and will eventually transcribe them. I will follow my quick regime to look at the Coleman family in Hampshire by checking FMP, Ancestry.ca, and World Connect. I may glance at Mocavo but I am finding it tends towards American Records although does pull up some of the English when they have been scanned at American libraries.
Checking Find My Past did not reveal any new information, I had hoped to find a burial for Clement in the Hampshire Burial Records. I do find the later burials for this family in the burial records but Clement eludes me. By 1717 his widow Katherine Coleman is running the alehouse at Goodworth Clatford and she continues to do so until at least 1723. Their only son Clement was born in 1704.

Clement Coleman (baptized 25 Oct 1704) married Dinah Beaver in 1737 at Upper Clatford. This marriage occurred slightly after the birth of their first son John who was baptized 13 Feb 1737 with their remaining children (William, Mary Elizabeth, Thomas, Clement, James, Anthony and Henry) all being listed as the children of this couple after their marriage. I did not find their marriage at Upper Clatford. This family had a somewhat tragic happening with the father Clement and two of his children Mary Elizabeth and Clement dying of measles in 1753 and 1756. James died at 14 and Henry at 12 of unknown causes. John, my ancestor died at 43 years of age just nine years after marring Elizabeth Pearce 7 Oct 1771 at Abbotts Ann. His daughter Sarah Coleman married Thomas Blake 10 Jun 1792 at Upper Clatford. I want to learn more about the Coleman family at all three of the villages - Goodworth Clatford, Upper Clatford and Abbotts Ann.

Jonson family at Abbotts Ann
There is also a Jonson family at Abbotts Ann. I have not yet found the baptism for Susannah Johnson (possible daughter of Roger Johnson and Mary and the wife of Anthony Beaver at Upper Clatford. Notably in 1586 there is a Roger Jonsone baptized at Abbotts Ann and the son of William Jonsone. There is a Roger Johnson married to Margaret and they baptized Roger Johnson 30 May 1641 at Upper Clatford. I shall have to make note of the Jo[h]nson family at Abbotts Ann. There is only one line of the Johnson family at Upper Clatford.
The Hurst family dominates the parish registers at Abbotts Ann in this time period. Harry Hurst is Churchwarden in this time period. There are a number of Hurst families with heads of household being Henry Hurst, John Hurst, Richard Hurst, Roger Hurst, Thomas Hurst, and William Hurst in the period from 1561 to 1587 where I currently am transcribing. The marriages may help to separate these men into fathers and sons although they could be different families just sharing the same surname.
Most years there are less than ten baptisms in this early time period. No new Blake baptisms and checking the IGI there does not appear to be a lot of Blake baptisms before the 1700s.
I am thinking about the Research Interests webpage for BIFHSGO. I manage the Research Interests and I like the idea of a new method of recording. Devon FHS has a very nice setup where you enter all the material yourself. You have a password and can update or remove at will. I think this is a good system and must think of how to write that up. The system would still require a coordinator to assist with problems entering, monitor the webentries and lost passwords. It would be nice to be able to have a search function that would let you pull up particular names and perhaps even be able to choose the county you wish to search.

Elizabeth Blake daughter of Robert Blake and Elizabeth Russell
Noted yesterday the death of an Elizabeth Blake in 1713 at Andover. If this was the daughter of Robert Blake and Elizabeth Russell born in 1695 then she would have been 18 in 1713. Robert and Elizabeth were still baptizing children and they could have had another Elizabeth. Need to look for that possibility and still no baptism for Charles Blake who married Mary Prince at Abbots Ann in 1737. However, John Blake malster at Abbots Ann fits nicely into this family with his birth in 1714 (he was 82 when he died in 1796). A sister Mary married William Marshman (Marshmont) in 1727 and that fits into this family. The other researcher mentioned yesterday found a marriage with Edward Gilbert of a Mary Marshmont in 1752 at Abbots Ann. There is a Mary Gilbert mentioned in the will.
I still feel that the language of the will shows a closer relationship between Charles Blake and the testator than between my Blake family at Upper Clatford. Sorting through the data, this John is my 3x great grandfather Thomas Blake's uncle by marriage. His mother Joanna King and John's wife Mary King are sisters and daughters of Thomas King. This is a good find and collaborates my earlier thinking that the language of the will was that of an uncle towards his niece and nephews. Helpful but not a direct "blood" tie.
Unraveling the mysteries presented in John Blake's will may help to solve the mystery of the parentage of Charles Blake and it comes closer to fruition I rather think. Ever since I found the will at the Hampshire Record Office and transcribed it I felt it was a key to my family lines at Upper Clatford. Although I am still just back to 5x great grandfather Thomas King and his wife Mary Carter who married 10 Jan 1728 at Upper Clatford, I now have the link between this family and the Blake family at Abbots Ann. I now know that Joanna wife of Joseph Blake and Mary wife of John Blake were sisters. What other information will the will provide me personally? The mention of the Beaver family is interesting as well. It is a descendant of the Beaver family that marries Thomas Blake son of Joseph and Joanna Blake - Sarah Coleman whose grandmother was Dinah Bever. Is the notation in front of Beavers "The"? Very difficult to tell and her married name was Coleman - why would he have referred to the children of Dinah as "The Beavers"? At this time there were three of them still living and he leaves three guineas! The father of Sarah had died in 1780. Why would John remember this family. The father of Dinah Beaver was Anthony Beaver and mother was Susanna Johnson. Likely the father of Susanna was Roger Johnson and this was an old family at Upper Clatford.
I continue working on the transcription of the Upper Clatford Parish Register 1 with the burials and I have completed to the beginning of 1708 with 600 burials from the beginning of the Registers (1570). The same families continue at Upper Clatford that have been there from the beginning of the Register. The King family is very large but I have not yet located a Thomas that could be my ancestor. I have not yet located a Carter that could be my ancestor either. The only Carter on the Hearth Tax is Thomas. But there are more Carter families there baptizing children: Henry and Elizabeth, John and Jane, William and Jone, and Thomas and Elizabeth. Perhaps they live closeby in a smaller village but baptize their children at Upper Clatford.
I am still trying to decide if I have accumulated enough evidence to say that the Thomas Blake who married Ann Carter at Penton Mewsey 8 Sep 1728 are my 5x great grandparents and the parents of Joseph Blake baptized at Andover 21 Oct 1730. The death of Anne Blake and her burial 20 Sep 1734 along with the burial of her son Thomas 22 Sep 1734 at Penton Mewsey is rather revealing. The baptism of Thomas 19 Sep 1734 at Andover (son of Thomas (Ann is not listed)) whereas Joseph is baptized as the son of Thomas and Ann also at Andover also leads one to think this is the same family. Also given that grandfather John was baptized at Penton Mewsey although the baptism is entered into the Andover Parish Register. I feel now that I can accept this marriage as correct between Thomas Blake and Ann Carter. The next mystery to solve for me is the Carter family. Are Mary Carter mother of Joanna King and Ann Carter mother of Joseph Blake related? Are Joanna and Joseph first cousins?

They baptize four daughters at Andover: Elizabeth (b 22 Apr 1702), Sarah (b 21 May 1703), Mary (b 27 Feb 1711), and Anne (b 13 Nov 1713) as well as Richard (b 13 Dec 1704), Thomas (b 15 Jun 1707), Josiah (b 21 Dec 1708), John (b 26 Apr 1717). Upper Clatford Priests
When we visited Upper Clatford in 2008 we took a picture of the list of priests and I have inserted the copy below.
Anthony Gatenbie (Rector from 1564 on) must have started the registers in 1571 and they were incredibly well kept up until the early 1600s by which time one would think he was quite elderly. He has however decided that the new year begins January 1 irreguardless of what the remainder of the country is doing. However James Samborne becomes Rector in 1610 and keeps the records not quite so well but details are there and readable until 1620 regularly and then sporadically to 1625. He goes with the old style of dating with Lady Day in March beginning the New Year (around March 25). The next Rector William Hooke in 1627 does not make a single entry and the entries do not begin again until 1632 when Thomas Samborne becomes Rector. Five years seems like a long time between events so one is left to surmise that he simply didn't keep any records or they are lost. Now in the 1630s the records are again quite legible and thus far appear to be well kept. Thomas has decided to go with January 1 as the beginning of the year. Neither Anthony Gatenbie nor Thomas Samborne mark the date as oldstyle/newstyle ie. 1616/1617 for January 1 to Lady Day (March 25 approximately). This is the first time that I have had the parish records thus kept being most familiar with the Old Style prior to 1752.
I have now reached 355 baptisms as of the end of 1634. There are no Blake entries thus far but I will encounter the first Blake entry in 1635 which is Annis Blake daughter John Blake baptized 28 Dec 1635. I know there is a will by Mary Blake in 1672 stating that she lived at Upper Clatford and had a daughter Dorothy married to Edward Walderne and a son William Blake. That is the sum of the knowledge about the Blake family at Upper Clatford prior to 1757 when my line is found there. However, I do recall that Peter Blake was left a farm at Upper Clatford although I must check that as it is coming from memory!
There are 78 images in total for these parish records commencing in 1570 and ending in 1724. I almost didn't purchase them as I knew my Blake line was at Andover until 1757 but there were only two fiche and it seemed silly not to have the complete set. I am very pleased now that I did do so because when I ordered them I didn't know that my King family existed and they are at Upper Clatford from the beginning of the Registers. Now are they my direct line? That is a good question and working through the fiche might help me with that. I also have the Beaver, Coleman and the Johnson family at Upper Clatford also discovered much later. I will always purchase all early fiche now when I do so as I neglected to do so at Kimpton and must order those earlier registers.
I have now decided to purchase Quarley, Longparish, Monxton and a couple of other parishes in the next couple of months. Likely I will also purchase Weyhill, Wherwell, Chilbolton, Fyfield, Tangley at some point in the future. Eventually I will probably have all of the parishes around Andover and will have captured all the Blake records in the area prior to 1700 (at least all the ones in the registers :) ).
