78 years old and Church on You-Tube today

 A great day yesterday and 78 officially now. I can remember each of my grandparents at 78 years of age. They were both still quite hale and hearty; both loved a good walk. In retrospect both loved a rich red meat diet and salt was definitely on the menu. Although both were relatively slender and muscular diet is a very important part of life for sure. Winters in Canada can be difficult for the elderly because getting out for a walk is risky with the ice on the walks. Exercising was not really something that people did back in the early 50s or even into the 60s as these two grandparents were 11 years separated in age and one from each of my family lines - my Blake Grandfather and my (Buller) Pincombe Grandmother. Reflecting on their lives is something I do more often than on my own parents because I lived with them on a more daily basis whereas I only saw my parents a few times a year because we did not live in their area and I returned to work outside the home in 1994 and that rather restricted travel time. Plus we used to go with Edward when he had to travel for work; it was great to do that in the spring and fall when he might have conferences to attend. We saw so much the three of us - my daughters and myself. It was a great education and gave one a freedom to travel the entire continent it almost seemed although most of the traveling was along the Atlantic Seaboard. That time is remembered fondly by all of us as time with Edward when he was not busy off doing his job and his volunteer activities. He was not home a lot for sure. 

Today Church on You-Tube and it is nice to be back. I do love the organ music and singing the hymns especially to music. I have to rely on memory when the organ isn't there playing the tune. Although as usual Ian White's Psalms is playing in the background at 6:17  a.m. this morning. 

An interesting article on the many species of Homo that have walked the face of the earth and DNA is doing all that tracking. In my own lines we have 3% Neanderthal and 5% Denisovan. Why so much Denisovan, I have no idea actually but do suspect it is my maternal grandmother's line going back in time. I know very little about her mother other than what my grandmother told me from the point of view of where she lived and the kind of person that she was. From the mtDNA though I have a great deal of information. H11 wintered at Ukraina during the Last Glacial Maximum better known as the Last Ice Age 15,000 to 20,000 years ago. Then this particular group of H11 from which we descend crossed from Ukraina perhaps through Doggerland or the Scandinavian Peninsula further north to end up in the Ayrshire/Argyllshire area of Scotland and thence to the northeastern part of Ireland. The first sign of Ellen (Taylor) Pincombe is Birmingham, England in the mid 1800s and it is the only timing firmly known to me about her because she was 37 years of age when she died of pneumonia one February morning in 1997 which my grandmother never forgot. She was eleven years of age.. But timing for these events prior to that time is totally unknown. As more and more research literature comes to the surface Haplogroup H11 continues to share some of that scientific perusal because it does have such a wide range for such a small grouping. I have ancient Russian/Ukrainian/Polish/Swedish/Finnish/Scot/Irish cousins from this line. But they are very ancient to me but none the less the fact that we do share common ancestry is amazing. One of the most fundamental items though is that we share ancient Ukrainian heritage, all of us, and that alone is amazing that we know that. 

On to the day, learning Latin, footnoting the Ninth Generation and moving towards the Tenth Generation. The last week of September may well see me into the Eleventh Generation and early October finished once again. Then back to the final work through and the setting up of the Creative Commons License to protect all of that work and keep it free for all family members to peruse and add to on their own computers and together we will keep the Siderfin family alive through the ages and perhaps one of us will uncover the link back to the 1200s in Early England and find out where they lived before that. One never knows what knowledge can be acquired with dogged determination and a desire to know. 

But first of all getting ready for Church. Even though I do not leave the house to go to Church there is still a lot of preparation to be ready for the service. Jumping Jacks and teatime is first and then my solitaire games; I have already read the Bible Reading for the day - poignant perhaps although not for myself; a rich man can not enter the kingdom of heaven and so must divest himself/herself of all that they own before they die. There is a richness in that Christian Heritage that nothing else can replace that shows up in the wills of our ancestors as they dutifully gave away all that they had as death approached them. That way they can control how what they have acquired is spent after they die. It is important to do that for your own good conscience I think. It is the gift of Jesus that just keeps on giving through the ages. God in His omnipotence loves what He has created but He did make the rules and in following them we have a more fulfilling life.

Ongoing Projects

It seems like an ideal time to list the projects that I have set aside or am currently working on as summer approaches. This year I plan to try and work in some of my studies whilst also gardening. 

1. Siderfin Book

2. Newsletters - Blake, Pincombe and H11 (will do the back issues to eventually publish) plus Kipp with my daughter's help

3 County books for the Blake Wills. Some counties are complete for PCC wills and I could publish them on my website. 

4. County books for the Buller Wills. Some counties are complete for PCC wills and I could publish them on my website. 

5. Revision of George DeKay's book although I would find it difficult to do this one alone. I could strip out the parts that are my line perhaps. Will contemplate that. George is the reason that I do genealogy as I resisted doing it for many years except when Edward asked for my assistance. George wanted a Pincombe Profile for the Westminster and Delaware History Book of which he was editor. That along with the introduction of personal DNA motivated me and 42 courses at the National Institute for Genealogical Studies showed me the path. Here I am nearly 20 years later and I do little else.

6. Phasing of my great grandparents and adding in the new matches to the phasing of my grandparents (already 25 new matches since I did this work in November)

7. Gathering up the Allen material and finding a home for that with Edward's cousins. His maternal grandmother was an Allen. He never knew her as she died when his mother was only eight years of age

8. Gathering up the pictures of Edward's brother Allen's family to give to his nieces

9. Working on the Kipp material to see if the Archives would like to have this material (many original pictures of the Kipp family)

10. Returning to the transcription of the Blake wills (I still have at least 1500 to transcribe)

11. Potential Pincombe and Blake books. The Pincombe book would do the deep past and come up to the present. The Blake book would look only at the Andover Blake family as I believe that given my brother's yDNA as ancient to the British Isles (8,000 to 12,000 years ago) the Blake surname was acquired probably in the late 1200s early 1300s by this family (likely marriage to a female with the Blake surname, handy that just across the border in Oxford there was such a family likely from Normandy!) with a known daughter Ann la Blake (daughter of Richard le Blak likely of Rouen, Normandy). I first see the name John Blak[e] in the Manor Books of Andover in the early 1300s. 

12. If in some dream world I am still as active a person when all of this is done (I see maybe ten years of work above) I would like to work on the Rawlings and Buller families (my paternal and maternal grandmothers). I do do a little work on Buller as I have quite a large number of cousins who have tested their DNA and my 2x great grandmother Ann (Welch) Buller had a twin sister. Both of these families were huge (around a dozen children each) and the number of descendants matching me like 3rd cousins is quite large and they are all over the British Commonwealth and the United States of America. The Rawlings is also a fascinating family with so many interesting lines marrying into that already have one name studies like Lywood (my 3x great grandfather George Lywood was at Waterloo in 1815).

I shall have to contemplate what I may have left out. Dawn is breaking in the east and another cloudy day for us at minus 6 degrees celsius. Not too much melting today perhaps. Again the refrains of "This is the day the Lord hath made" swirl in my brain as I greet another day in God's Kingdom. As I have puzzled all my life, what is the duty that I must fulfill in this world. Life is always a mystery; one never knows what is around the corner. I am happy to see the First Nations taking a much more prominent role in our country. They know the land and can help to lead us forward to a better life for all the peoples of Canada. It is the land which created us and the land which sustains us and so we must protect that land with every ounce of our ability. 

Prayers for Ukraine as always. Glory to Ukraine.I listened to the address of European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen last evening. She too is a powerful speaker and a credit to Europe and a fierce supporter of Ukraine. Next stop for her is meeting with President Biden in America. China continues to carry responsibility for how this situation will flow. History is waiting and we can only sit on the sidelines and wait. Power isn't about owning it is about doing the best for the world and her people. We do not know what awaits us beyond our earth but we must be unified in our protection of the earth and all her peoples. No one can be an aggressor in this modern world post-COVID. We must all be caretakers of our world. That is the task that God assigned to us.

And the downsizing continues

I always wanted to be more involved with the Society of one place studies and do have Bishops Nympton and Upper Clatford listed as my one place studies. However, it is a distraction from my transcription and so I decided that I would also terminate that membership and that will be next April. When the opportunity and time presents itself I can take up the mantle once again if my two favourite villages are available. I have visited both of them when we were in England and I have stories about Upper Clatford that my grandfather told me which makes that one even closer to me.

I am surprised at how freeing separating myself from these responsibilities has become. Another task that I have had for a long time online parish clerks for several parishes including Bishops Nympton and Winterbourne Clenstone. I have a few others but mostly I have stepped away from those others over the past 9 years that my husband has been ill. I shall consider letting these other two go although I have so many records for Bishops Nympton that it does seem a pity to step away from it. I shall consider that one very carefully. Everything that I have for Winterbourne Clenstone is online.

I have nearly 1000 emails in my inbox once again although everyone has been answered. I shall work away at getting back to less than 50 once again. A lot of them can just be reviewed/filed/discarded but I need to work through that process. I do not like to discard/file immediately and that gets me into trouble in terms of a full mailbox.

I already downsized my commitment at FT DNA with regard to administration of DNA studies. I am down to the bare bones there - Blake, Pincombe, H11, Hampshire, T_FGS, and T2. I do almost nothing with the T haplogroup studies these days. There are plenty of hands-on people there. That leaves me with just the four studies and probably a dozen emails a day with them although some days heavier than that. 

I have also after 16 years terminated my continuous membership with Genes Reunited as of May 2020. I really never look at that site these days. It is an excellent site as I have met descendants of all of the siblings of my 2x great grandmother Elizabeth (Rew) Pincombe on that site. All live in England with just Elizabeth coming to Canada as an emigrant in 1850/51. 

I seldom have time to look at the Society of Genealogists' Website and that is something that I want to start doing. I would like to give them my Blake and Pincombe files eventually if they desire them that is.

And the cold and snow continues

Lane way all dug out and we have a snowblower as well but some digging is needed, walks cleared and a run for the dog. We can now relax for the day and do our jigsaw puzzle. My it is cold out there but we are used to having this cold for a few weeks every winter. I just hibernate!

Just finished the H11 Newsletter. I am somewhat surprised that I am now into Volume 3 of this Newsletter. It was started on a whim and I have found, for the most part, something to put into it the last two years. I find it a good venue for any thoughts I have or any journal articles passed to me or that I have found.

It is an interesting subclade of H in that it is so small compared to the real giants in this subclade H1 and H2. However H is still 30% of the world's mitochondrial subclades which is a very large number perhaps as many as 2 billion people are H haplogroup or more. H11 is about 1% of that so 20 million people have that haplogroup. There are two major subclades for H11 - H11a and H11b and I have seen 70% H11a and 30% H11b so we are looking at 14 million H11a and 6 million H11b. I have not seen any actual further divisions percentage wise but I estimate there are at least 500,000 to 1,000,000 people who carry my particular subclade of H11a2a1.

After FT DNA published their new mitochondrial tree, I realized that as large as my study is I am looking at only about 20 to 25% of the results actually tested at FT DNA. Although I enjoy publishing what I find it does not really reflect a true picture of the subclades of H11 I rather suspect.

H11 haplogroup

A couple of months later than I thought I would be reporting on H11 haplogroup.

There are now 119 members of this study with 71 giving their ancestral location.

To date none of these could be declared to be location specific although H11a2a1 does appear to be most commonly found in the British Isles (only 5 out of 9 reporting but two of the members report likely British Isles surnames/colonial emigrants to America) and H11a2a2 appears to be an Eastern European grouping (out of 6 members 4 report Eastern Europe, 1 reports Western Europe and 1 reports Scandinavian Peninsula).

Back mutations of 16092C do appear in the H11a2 and H11a2a clade as well as in the subclades H11a2a1 and H11a2a2. FT DNA has started reporting a back mutation in 16140C as H11a2-T16092C.

H11a1  reports 10 from the Scandinavian Peninsula, 2 from the British Isles, 10 from Eastern Europe, 2 from Central/Western Europe and 2 from Southern Europe.

Contacts at 23 and Me

My results are just a couple of days old at 23 and Me and already I have had two contacts (one I initiated and one to me). For the one it is my Blake line in Hampshire and the relationship is very ancient going back to my 11x great grandfather (I have one Blake marriage which brings two lines together at my 9x great grandparents giving a little extra boost to the genes I guess!) and the other is a mystery at the moment although we share surnames in both Hampshire and Warwickshire. So a little sleuthing to come on those lines (3rd cousin is the indication). I have 919 matches at 23 and Me but mostly in the distant category. No close relationships but 1 2nd to 4th unknown, 5 3rd to 5th cousins, 101 3rd to 6th cousins, with the remainder being more distant. About 1/3 to 1/2 are public matches. There are many many with American ancestry. My contacts were both from Australia with ( like me) 100% British Ancestry.

There are also quite a few matches with people having 100% Irish ancestry. Perhaps I will solve that elusive great grandmother after all with a match. I have one particularly good match on the X chromosome which bears further research and it is a public match. I have written and will see what happens there. This person has ancestry in Northern Ireland which is the likely place for my great grandmother to have been located or at least her family as she was born in Birmingham. The nice part is my mitochondrial DNA can be used as well. This particular grouping that I have is found principally in Northern Ireland and in Argyllshire/Ayshire Scotland. We are ancient to the British Isles (H11a2a1) although I note that the greatest frequency for our haplogroup H11a2 is The Netherlands which I think is one of the migration points out of Ukraina following the Last Ice Age. Because my matches are also in Sweden I was suspicious that they had taken the northern route to get to Scotland but a southern route across Europe into the British Isles (via Doggerland) is also very conceivable with people spreading out from a common migration route. All of this is so exciting and the area is under water (the North Sea flooded Doggerland thousands of years ago as the ice sheets retreated).

So all in all, another interesting result for me and I have taken all three autosomal results into Gedmatch and I am a perfect match for myself. Always rewarding given my science background to see the duplication of results from the same person. Since I have been involved with DNA from almost the beginning of my genealogy research days, I adhere very strongly to the principal that you really cannot do genealogy without both paper trails and DNA trails. It is amazing to be able to prove your research in such a scientific way.

The British: A Genetic Journey by Alistair Moffat

Over the past month I have managed to read a rather fascinating book by Alistair Moffat titled The British A Genetic Journey. With all my English ancestry I have meant to read this book for awhile. Although he does not use footnotes choosing to write in a less academic style, his text is quite interesting and one can readily look into the literature and discover the science that has been published to which he refers. He paints an interesting story of the peopling of the British Isles. Some of the latest results of Big Y testing are perhaps updating his thoughts but this is an evolving study.

In my family lines, both the yDNA and the mtDNA are ancient to the British Isles according to testing done with BritainsDNA, FT DNA, and Genographic Project 2.0. The I2a2b haplogroup assignment for our yDNA results (FT DNA and I2a1b2 (ISOGG)) has been further broken down in the I2a study at FT DNA and designated as B4 along with two other results. These three results do not match but are said to belong to the same distinct group B4. This is the work of Ken Nordvedt with the three members -  Abijah Sussex being traced back to Devon in the 1600s and Roger Hoyte to circa 1650s at Creed Cornwall and my paternal line traces back to Robert Blayke circa mid 1400s in the Andover Hampshire area (namely Knights Enham). Alistair Moffat refers to this group as the deer hunters as does BritainsDNA. BritainsDNA lists this group as being S-185 but further delineated as S-2640 subtype but no further information on this subgroup. S-185 is just 0.9% of I haplogroup in their study and I haplogroup is just 18.1% of their entire set of results for y haplogroup. If you have 100,000 people tested at BritainsDNA then 18,100 would be I haplogroup and 1,629 of them would belong to I2a2b. Extrapolating that to the total population of the British Isles about 68 million one would have if the percentages actually do match actuality 12 million I haplogroup and 110,000 I2a2b. This subgroup is 3x more frequent in The Irish Republic yielding approximately 84,000 for this area and 26,000 in the rest of the British Isles although the concentration would likely be in the southern to south western part of England according to charts published by BritainsDNA in my brother's results and this does appear to hold true to the results in the FT DNA group where the three members are from Cornwall, Devon and Hampshire for B4 and there are several other groups.

I found a rather interesting article about I2a2b online discussing why this group is so small in the published results (I also think that part of this is because it is a very ancient group to the British Isles and the numbers are still not really large for people testing their deep ancestry in the British Isles). For instance, not one of my 3rd and greater Blake cousins in England has tested. I do not have any 2nd cousins in the Blake line in England (my father was an only child and the only Blake grandson of Edward Blake of Upper Clatford but Edward did have brothers with sons (their father was John Blake of Upper Clatford) and he had uncles with sons (their father was Thomas Blake of Upper Clatford and he was the son of Joseph Blake of Andover)).

Lately, with all these discoveries of ancient burials I wonder if one day my own line will be found - an exciting prospect. But having said all of this I still do not have a match at FT DNA, the matches at BritainsDNA are for SNPs only. No Blake, other than my brother, has tested in my known line as far as I am aware. There are several matches using the limited markers of the Blood of the Isles database. Should I actively pursue my 3rd and 4th cousins living still in England in the Andover area? What would they think if I wrote to them? telephoned them? I am still considering that idea. We are going to be in that area next April following Who Do You Think You Are in Birmingham - at least that is the plan. To spend a couple of days in the Andover area including Upper Clatford. Would any of my grandfather's cousins' children be interested in seeing what I have collected? I am basically a rather shy person and the idea of cold-calling people is foreign to me. I keep thinking about my grandfather and what he would have thought if he received a call out of the blue. A few more months to think about that.

The mtDNA of my most ancient ancestress and mine as well (verified with my brother's testing) is H11a2a1. We tested back in 2007 and have watched as H11 has unfolded with the published literature giving a deeper look into H11. This is a small part of the much greater H haplogroup. H11 is about 1% of all H and my own group a much smaller part of that greater group of H11. My best matches are in Ireland and Scotland but also there are some individual matches in Russia of the coding region but they lack the extra mutations that my line has in the British Isles. Tracking the members of my H11 study at FT DNA the further you are away from Ukraina where this group likely wintered during the last Ice Age then the more mutations you have acquired. My own line has three of the four distinct ones found in the British Isles (perhaps my line has reverted on one of these mutations making it somewhat easier to spot matches!).The added mutations perhaps helped them to survive as they are named Pioneers by BritainsDNA. BritainsDNA does not look at H11 individually in their writeup. It is a very very small group in the British Isles. The Blood of the Isles database has 18 with the full four mutations and two matching myself with just three mutations in HVRI (HVRII matches in both groups). There are 16 exact matches with the larger group at FT DNA. I have one match with my brother. This is my one line that I have only family lore to go on back from my great grandmother Ellen Taylor. There is some hint that she may have been Irish so perhaps from the Planters in County Antrim where there are a couple of matches on Oxford Ancestors database or from Scotland where Sorenson has a single match.

H11 haplogroup - half yearly discussion

The H11 project continues to grow from the 82 members in this earlier post. There are now 88 members who have done the Full Genetic Scan of the mitochondrial DNA and a total membership of 101 individuals. I have, on occasion, inserted people into their likely subclade but without a full genetic scan it is impossible to say that such placement is correct.

When I did the Gen 2.0 test (Genographic Project) on our mitochondrial DNA, the "heat map" or "resting spot" for H11a2a1 was located in Middle to Eastern Europe extending from Slovakia through Poland and into the Ukraine/Russia/Georgia/Ossettia. I have mentioned earlier that my line has good matches in Ossettia although these matches lack 16092 and 16140 (ours have these mutations). I am left to wonder if 16092 and 16140 provided our ancestors with some sort of protection in their new environment which tends to be in the northern areas of the British Isles but also located along a migration path which extends from Ossettia into Europe and thence into the British Isles and also across the Scandinavian archipelago and possibly into the northern areas of the British Isles since the frequency of my matches are in this area.

It would be interesting if others who belong to H11 would comment on this post giving their earliest known resting spot for their furtherest back ancestress. H11 is a small grouping and I think there is a potential that as a group we could add to the knowledge of our haplogroup simply by recording our known history in a systematic fashion. It is a thought that I will mention to any readers.

I have now verified my own line by doing my brother's full genetic scan. The Gen 2.0 test and the BritainsDNA had verified it but did not provide all the mutations so I did take that one step further to complete that testing. Although doing the Full Genetic Scan was thought to be a path to greater discovery for people with regard to their female ancestress the mutation rate is very very slow thus rendering a lot of our close matches but not exact matches to a thousand years in the past and making linkages difficult. So doing the full genetic scan and having perfect matches may bring us closer to paper records time frame in that it is estimated (by FT DNA) that a perfect match can show a relationship in the past six hundred years or 16 generations in 90% of people. Few people can trace their female line that far back but matches could be closer and it is necessary to take the match and trace backwards as far as one can and then bring that ancestress' children down. A long and meticulous effort but could bear fruit paticularly for anyone who is stuck in the 1700s or 1800s or 1900s!

The best matches for my brother and I but always 1 mutation less are in Ireland and Scotland and particularly in those areas where population exchange occurred across the Irish Sea between Ulster in Ireland and Ayrshire/Argyllshire in Scotland. When the ice sheets still existed north of the British Isles these two would have been joined and hence the population characteristics would be quite similar for anyone with ancient lines in these areas. Unknown to us is how our furtherest back ancestress arrived in the Midlands of England by the middle of the 1700s - a direct route down through Cumberland or a crossing from Ireland? It is anyones guess actually and I await that day when someone tests, not in our family line, that is an exact match!
