My last Coleman research day was 5 Apr 2011 and the research plan developed to move forward was to transcribe the Goodworth Clatford parish registers but only if Abbots Ann was complete. My Coleman family lived at Abbots Ann and before that Upper Clatford and prior to that at Goodworth Clatford.

Just to remind myself of my Coleman family, Sarah Coleman married Thomas Blake 10 Jun 1792 at Upper Clatford. Sarah was baptized 15 June 1773 at Abbots Ann the daughter of John Coleman and Elizabeth Pearce who were themselves married 7 Oct 1771 at Abbots Ann. Sarah and Thomas had ten children of whom the last two died (Henry and Joanna) and the fourth (Joanna) died as infants and the seventh child Sarah died at the age of three. All the rest survived to adulthood but two died rather young the sixth child George (35 years of age) and the eighth child Charlotte (31 years of age). The longest living child was Mary who lived to be 87 years of age and then John (my ancestor) who was 74 years of age when he died. Thomas the fifth child may have also been into his 70s but I haven't found his death registration yet. The remaining child, William, the eldest, was 70 years of age when he died.
Sarah died 3 Jul 1816 (her last child had been born 31 May 1816 dying 3 Jun 1816). Sarah's father John Coleman was baptized 13 Feb 1736 at Upper Clatford and he was buried 2 Jul 1780 at Upper Clatford (44 years of age). There were just the two children for John Coleman and Elizabeth Pearce - Sarah and her brother William who was baptized 12 Mar 1775 at Upper Clatford. William married Mary Wright (marriage not yet found) and they had at least one son William.
Moving further back John was the eldest son of Clement Coleman and Dinah Bever. Clement and Dinah had eight children of whom four died of measles as recorded in the Parish Registers of Upper Clatford. I have not yet traced down the remaining children other than John although I do have the Parish Registers of Upper Clatford transcribed up to 1812. A quick check of the excel file for Upper Clatford shows that the eight children were baptized at Upper Clatford but none after that time up to 1812. Burials at Upper Clatford show widow Coleman buried 20 Aug 1642, Clement Coleman buried 8 Feb 1753 and then the four children Clement buried 9 Mar 1756, Mary Elizabeth buried 13 Mar 1756, Henry buried 13 May 1763 and James the fourth child who died young is not listed and Dinah herself buried 7 May 1783. There are only two Coleman marriages at Upper Clatford - Sarah married to Thomas Blake and her mother Elizabeth Coleman (widow) married John Head 10 Oct 1781.
I can move back one more generation from Clement Coleman and he was baptized 25 Oct 1704 at Goodworth Clatford the son of Clement Coleman and Katherine Holeridge who were themselves married 6 Oct 1695 at Goodworth Clatford. They had four daughters and the one son. Their eldest daughter Katherine Coleman (baptized 3 Aug 1696 at Goodworth Clatford) married Charles Dear 10 May 1723 at Goodworth Clatford. Katherine ran an Inn at Upper Clatford and this was possibly a joint effort with Clement but the licenses for this only go back to the time after Clement died (likely before 1721). Their other daughters were Elizabeth baptized 27 Apr 1698 at Goodworth Clatford, Mary (baptism not yet located) and Ann baptized 28 Apr 1710 at Goodworth Clatford. Prior to this time I have no ideas on where the Coleman or the Holeridge family were located.
The Hampshire Record Office online catalogue has 50 wills for members of the Coleman family between 1515 and 1785 but none of them appear to be for any of the members of the Coleman family thus far known to me. Searching on Clement Coleman does not give my any records that are relevant. Any Google searches bring up my webpages for the most part.
I think perhaps my time might be best spent on the Abbots Ann Parish Registers at this stage so I will proceed using up my one hour on the Coleman family for this pursuit. When I last transcribed Abbots Ann I was at 1612 for baptisms, 1598 for marriages and 1597 for burials. The Subsidy 1571-1598 at Abbots Ann does not list any Coleman family members.
I shall keep my blog open in case I come across any interesting entries and will publish the blog after I have put in my one hour on the parish registers of Abbots Ann.
There is one missing entry in Family Search for Thomas Whicher son of Thomas Whicher baptized 2 May 1613. Occasionally there are misses in the Parish Register Transcriptions for Family Search. Although the spelling looks like Whicher I note that Whityere is a commoner name in the parish register.
Future Coleman days will be devoted to the Abbots Ann Parish Registers which is also good for my Blake one name study.

Will of Nathaniel Bever of Basingstoke, Esquire - The National Archives PROB 11/1110/41, probated 13 Nov 1783
Again another one of my lines is the Bever family of Goodworth Clatford and Upper Clatford Hampshire. I imaged this will just out of curiosity. This particular Bever family of Basingstoke consists of Nathaniel Bever married to Jenny Anne with children Jenny Anne baptized 1 Mar 1739, Henrietta Maria baptized 28 Apr 1741, Nathaniel baptized 22 Dec 1746 at Basingstoke and Molly baptized 12 Aug 1751 at Saint Martin in the Fields, Westminster, London. Nathaniel the son must have died as he is not mentioned in the will. His daughter Henrietta is 42 years of age when he writes this will which if you are reading the will is surprising due to his comments therein.
There is an entry in the IGI for a marriage of Nathaniel Beaver to Jenny Ann Dalton 9 May 1737 in Westminster, Middlesex. The spelling of Beaver is interesting because my family used Bever /Beaver interchangeably in the records (at least the priest recording events did).
For my own line I have Anthony Beaver/Bever married Susanna Johnson 20 Jul 1710 at Upper Clatford and they were both buried at Upper Clatford Anthony 11 Oct 1724 and Susanna 3 Apr 1736. They were not baptized at Upper Clatford. Their children: Dinah baptized Jun 1712 at Upper Clatford and buried there 7 May 1783 married to Clement Coleman who owned/managed an Inn at Goodworth Clatford although he too was buried 8 Feb 1753 at Upper Clatford. I have not yet found their marriage lines but I haven't transcribed Goodworth Clatford records yet (fiche ready and waiting :) ). Their other children were Susannah (buried 7 Mar 1764 at Upper Clatford) and Thomas baptized 12 May 1717 at Upper Clatford and buried there 1 Dec 1732. Susannah did not marry so the only descendants of this couple are my Coleman ancestors.
Nathaniel has left a seven page will so I wondered if he might mention any of his cousins/siblings. Hence my interest in transcribing this will. There is one other Bever will (from 1618) to transcribe as I move through the wills that my husband and I imaged at Kew in October 2010.
William Withers Pink Garret was baptized 12 Oct 1769 at Saint Maurice, Winchester and the son of William Garret. William Withers Pink Garrett married Maria (unknown) and they had two children baptized at Milton Lilbourne Wiltshire - William Bever 17 Jan 1807 and Eliza Ann baptized 23 Dec 1805 also at Milton Lilbourne Wiltshire with mother Maria.
Interesting will and the last probate gives admon to the three daughters because the two executors have died with the last one dying intestate so the court picks residuary legatees. Eventually the estate must have passed to William Bever Garret if he survived to the age of 21 years. However, nothing learned about my Bever family.

39 or gotten for the same and also collect receive and get in all such
40 Debts and Sumes of Money due and owing to me at my Death or

43 in such Stocks Funds or Government Securities as aforesaid and
44 Do and shall lay out and invest the Monies which shall arise by
45 such Sale or Sales and Disposition and also the Monies which
46 shall be so collected received and gotten in as aforesaid and likewise
47 my ready Money at my death in one or more of the Public
48 Stocks Funds or Government Securities at Interest and do and shall
49 from and immediately after my decease stand and be possessed of and
50 interested in all such Stocks Funds and Government Securities
52 wherein or upon which any part or parts of my personal Estate
53 shall be invested or placed at the time of my decease And also of
54 all such stocks Funds Government Securities wherein or upon
55 which all of any part of parts of the Monies aforesaid shall be
56 after my death laid out or invested and the Dividends Interest or
57 produce of all and every such stocks Funds and Government
58 Securities as aforesaid Upon the Trusts and for the Intents and

178 contingency happening be possessed of and intitled to the Estate

180 of my said Nephew Samuel Bever which has for many
181 Generations been the property and in the possession of the Bever
182 Family to and for the sole and only proper use Benefit and Disposal
183 of such person or persons of the Surname of Bever as possessed
184 of the said Estate at the time aforesaid provided always
185 nevertheless and I do hereby declare it to be my express will
186 desire order and direction that if my said Daughter Henrietta
187 Maria Bever shall at any time during my life or after my
188 decease intermarry with Edward Rempson now or late a
189 Lieutenant or of some other Rank in the Staffordshire Regiment
190 of Militia Then and from thenceforth she my said Daughter
191 shall forfeit all Interest and Benefit under this my Will and shall
192 not be intitled to receive any share whatsoever of the Dividends
193 Interest or produce of the said Stocks Funds or Government
194 Securities so to be paid to her during life as above mentioned
195 neither shall her heir Male if he is the Issue of such Marriage
196 (notwithstanding my said Trustees should signify their consent
197 and approbation of the same in manner herein before
198 mentioned) be intitled to receive any Benefit or Interest
199 whatsoever under this my Will but such share or shares of the
200 said Dividends Interest or Produce and also the Share or Shares
201 of the said Stocks Funds and Government Securities so respectively

203 such her intermarriage with the said Edward Rempson be paid
204 and applied transferred and assigned by my said Trustees in the

206 as if my said Daughter Henrietta Maria had been then dead

208 said Trustees or either of them do not call in or in any wise compel
209 the payment of the Sum of five hundred and fifty pounds or any
210 Interest for the same due and owing to me by my Son in Law the
211 said John Thompson in and by his certain Bond or Obligation
212 bearing date on or about the eighteenth day of May one thousand
213 seven hundred and seventy three at any time during the life of the
214 said John Thompson but only stand possess thereof Upon Trust
215 immediately after his Decease to claim due for recover and receive
216 the Principal and Interest Monies which shall then be due and
217 owing on the said Bond or Obligation of his heirs Executors or
218 Administrators and pay the same to my said Daughter Jenny Ann
219 if she shall him survive But in case the said John Thompson

222 to the said John Thompson to be cancelled and destroyed without

225 express will desire order and direction that Mr John Davies of
226 Basingstoke aforesaid Draper be employed to sell and dispose of
227 my Freehold Messuage or Tenement and premises in Basingstoke
228 aforesaid and such of my Goods Chattels and Effects as are hereinbefore
229 directed to be sold which at the time of my decease shall happen
230 to be in that Town And I do hereby nominate constitute and
231 appoint them my said Nephews Thomas Bever and Samuel
232 Bever Executors of this my Will and I do hereby declare and
233 direct that it shall and may be lawful to and for my said Trustees
234 and Executors above named or either of any of them from time
235 to time to deduct retain and reimburse themselves respectively
236 by and out of all or any the Trust Monies aforesaid all such Costs
237 Damages and Expences which they or either of them shall bear
238 pay sustain exposed or be put into in or about or relating to the
239 Execution of this my Will or the Trusts herein contained and that
240 they or either of them shall not be charged or chargeable but
241 only each of them for his own respective Receipts payments

Their children: Dinah baptized Jun 1712 at Upper Clatford and buried there 7 May 1783 married to Clement Coleman who owned/managed an Inn at Goodworth Clatford although he too was buried 8 Feb 1753 at Upper Clatford. I have not yet found their marriage lines but I haven't transcribed Goodworth Clatford records yet (fiche ready and waiting :) ). Their other children were Susannah (buried 7 Mar 1764 at Upper Clatford) and Thomas baptized 12 May 1717 at Upper Clatford and buried there 1 Dec 1732. Susannah did not marry so the only descendants of this couple are my Coleman ancestors.
Nathaniel has left a seven page will so I wondered if he might mention any of his cousins/siblings. Hence my interest in transcribing this will. There is one other Bever will (from 1618) to transcribe as I move through the wills that my husband and I imaged at Kew in October 2010.
William Withers Pink Garret was baptized 12 Oct 1769 at Saint Maurice, Winchester and the son of William Garret. William Withers Pink Garrett married Maria (unknown) and they had two children baptized at Milton Lilbourne Wiltshire - William Bever 17 Jan 1807 and Eliza Ann baptized 23 Dec 1805 also at Milton Lilbourne Wiltshire with mother Maria.
Interesting will and the last probate gives admon to the three daughters because the two executors have died with the last one dying intestate so the court picks residuary legatees. Eventually the estate must have passed to William Bever Garret if he survived to the age of 21 years. However, nothing learned about my Bever family.

183 of such person or persons of the Surname of Bever as possessed
184 of the said Estate at the time aforesaid provided always
185 nevertheless and I do hereby declare it to be my express will
186 desire order and direction that if my said Daughter Henrietta
187 Maria Bever shall at any time during my life or after my
188 decease intermarry with Edward Rempson now or late a
189 Lieutenant or of some other Rank in the Staffordshire Regiment
190 of Militia Then and from thenceforth she my said Daughter
191 shall forfeit all Interest and Benefit under this my Will and shall
192 not be intitled to receive any share whatsoever of the Dividends
193 Interest or produce of the said Stocks Funds or Government
194 Securities so to be paid to her during life as above mentioned
195 neither shall her heir Male if he is the Issue of such Marriage
196 (notwithstanding my said Trustees should signify their consent
197 and approbation of the same in manner herein before
198 mentioned) be intitled to receive any Benefit or Interest

203 such her intermarriage with the said Edward Rempson be paid
204 and applied transferred and assigned by my said Trustees in the

206 as if my said Daughter Henrietta Maria had been then dead

208 said Trustees or either of them do not call in or in any wise compel
209 the payment of the Sum of five hundred and fifty pounds or any
210 Interest for the same due and owing to me by my Son in Law the
211 said John Thompson in and by his certain Bond or Obligation
212 bearing date on or about the eighteenth day of May one thousand
213 seven hundred and seventy three at any time during the life of the
214 said John Thompson but only stand possess thereof Upon Trust
215 immediately after his Decease to claim due for recover and receive
216 the Principal and Interest Monies which shall then be due and
217 owing on the said Bond or Obligation of his heirs Executors or
218 Administrators and pay the same to my said Daughter Jenny Ann
219 if she shall him survive But in case the said John Thompson

226 Basingstoke aforesaid Draper be employed to sell and dispose of
227 my Freehold Messuage or Tenement and premises in Basingstoke

229 directed to be sold which at the time of my decease shall happen
230 to be in that Town And I do hereby nominate constitute and
231 appoint them my said Nephews Thomas Bever and Samuel

Elizabeth Blake daughter of Robert Blake and Elizabeth Russell
Noted yesterday the death of an Elizabeth Blake in 1713 at Andover. If this was the daughter of Robert Blake and Elizabeth Russell born in 1695 then she would have been 18 in 1713. Robert and Elizabeth were still baptizing children and they could have had another Elizabeth. Need to look for that possibility and still no baptism for Charles Blake who married Mary Prince at Abbots Ann in 1737. However, John Blake malster at Abbots Ann fits nicely into this family with his birth in 1714 (he was 82 when he died in 1796). A sister Mary married William Marshman (Marshmont) in 1727 and that fits into this family. The other researcher mentioned yesterday found a marriage with Edward Gilbert of a Mary Marshmont in 1752 at Abbots Ann. There is a Mary Gilbert mentioned in the will.
I still feel that the language of the will shows a closer relationship between Charles Blake and the testator than between my Blake family at Upper Clatford. Sorting through the data, this John is my 3x great grandfather Thomas Blake's uncle by marriage. His mother Joanna King and John's wife Mary King are sisters and daughters of Thomas King. This is a good find and collaborates my earlier thinking that the language of the will was that of an uncle towards his niece and nephews. Helpful but not a direct "blood" tie.
Unraveling the mysteries presented in John Blake's will may help to solve the mystery of the parentage of Charles Blake and it comes closer to fruition I rather think. Ever since I found the will at the Hampshire Record Office and transcribed it I felt it was a key to my family lines at Upper Clatford. Although I am still just back to 5x great grandfather Thomas King and his wife Mary Carter who married 10 Jan 1728 at Upper Clatford, I now have the link between this family and the Blake family at Abbots Ann. I now know that Joanna wife of Joseph Blake and Mary wife of John Blake were sisters. What other information will the will provide me personally? The mention of the Beaver family is interesting as well. It is a descendant of the Beaver family that marries Thomas Blake son of Joseph and Joanna Blake - Sarah Coleman whose grandmother was Dinah Bever. Is the notation in front of Beavers "The"? Very difficult to tell and her married name was Coleman - why would he have referred to the children of Dinah as "The Beavers"? At this time there were three of them still living and he leaves three guineas! The father of Sarah had died in 1780. Why would John remember this family. The father of Dinah Beaver was Anthony Beaver and mother was Susanna Johnson. Likely the father of Susanna was Roger Johnson and this was an old family at Upper Clatford.
I continue working on the transcription of the Upper Clatford Parish Register 1 with the burials and I have completed to the beginning of 1708 with 600 burials from the beginning of the Registers (1570). The same families continue at Upper Clatford that have been there from the beginning of the Register. The King family is very large but I have not yet located a Thomas that could be my ancestor. I have not yet located a Carter that could be my ancestor either. The only Carter on the Hearth Tax is Thomas. But there are more Carter families there baptizing children: Henry and Elizabeth, John and Jane, William and Jone, and Thomas and Elizabeth. Perhaps they live closeby in a smaller village but baptize their children at Upper Clatford.
I am still trying to decide if I have accumulated enough evidence to say that the Thomas Blake who married Ann Carter at Penton Mewsey 8 Sep 1728 are my 5x great grandparents and the parents of Joseph Blake baptized at Andover 21 Oct 1730. The death of Anne Blake and her burial 20 Sep 1734 along with the burial of her son Thomas 22 Sep 1734 at Penton Mewsey is rather revealing. The baptism of Thomas 19 Sep 1734 at Andover (son of Thomas (Ann is not listed)) whereas Joseph is baptized as the son of Thomas and Ann also at Andover also leads one to think this is the same family. Also given that grandfather John was baptized at Penton Mewsey although the baptism is entered into the Andover Parish Register. I feel now that I can accept this marriage as correct between Thomas Blake and Ann Carter. The next mystery to solve for me is the Carter family. Are Mary Carter mother of Joanna King and Ann Carter mother of Joseph Blake related? Are Joanna and Joseph first cousins?
Are Richard Carter and Elizabeth Musprett the parents of Ann Carter?; they are baptizing an Ann 13 Nov 1713 at Andover. They baptize four daughters at Andover: Elizabeth (b 22 Apr 1702), Sarah (b 21 May 1703), Mary (b 27 Feb 1711), and Anne (b 13 Nov 1713) as well as Richard (b 13 Dec 1704), Thomas (b 15 Jun 1707), Josiah (b 21 Dec 1708), John (b 26 Apr 1717). The names are interesting with respect to Mary Carter who married Thomas King and their children were named Mary, Elizabeth and Joanna. Ann Carter married to Thomas Blake did not have any daughters. Given that Ann died in 1734 you might have expected to see Mary (Carter) King call a child Ann but the next two girls are named Elizabeth and Joanna. Interesting though to look at names. Richard Carter and Elizabeth Musprett named their first son Richard and their first daughter Elizabeth. I will investigate to see if Richard might be the son of Thomas Carter though given that the second son is named Thomas. The second daughter was called Sarah so could investigate Elizabeth Musprett having Sarah as her mother. Interestingly there is an Elizabeth Musprat baptized 20 Feb 1682 at Andover the daughter of Thomas Musprat.

At this time there were three of them still living and he leaves three guineas! The father of Sarah had died in 1780. Why would John remember this family. The father of Dinah Beaver was Anthony Beaver and mother was Susanna Johnson. Likely the father of Susanna was Roger Johnson and this was an old family at Upper Clatford.
I continue working on the transcription of the Upper Clatford Parish Register 1 with the burials and I have completed to the beginning of 1708 with 600 burials from the beginning of the Registers (1570). The same families continue at Upper Clatford that have been there from the beginning of the Register. The King family is very large but I have not yet located a Thomas that could be my ancestor. I have not yet located a Carter that could be my ancestor either. The only Carter on the Hearth Tax is Thomas. But there are more Carter families there baptizing children: Henry and Elizabeth, John and Jane, William and Jone, and Thomas and Elizabeth. Perhaps they live closeby in a smaller village but baptize their children at Upper Clatford.
I am still trying to decide if I have accumulated enough evidence to say that the Thomas Blake who married Ann Carter at Penton Mewsey 8 Sep 1728 are my 5x great grandparents and the parents of Joseph Blake baptized at Andover 21 Oct 1730. The death of Anne Blake and her burial 20 Sep 1734 along with the burial of her son Thomas 22 Sep 1734 at Penton Mewsey is rather revealing. The baptism of Thomas 19 Sep 1734 at Andover (son of Thomas (Ann is not listed)) whereas Joseph is baptized as the son of Thomas and Ann also at Andover also leads one to think this is the same family. Also given that grandfather John was baptized at Penton Mewsey although the baptism is entered into the Andover Parish Register. I feel now that I can accept this marriage as correct between Thomas Blake and Ann Carter. The next mystery to solve for me is the Carter family. Are Mary Carter mother of Joanna King and Ann Carter mother of Joseph Blake related? Are Joanna and Joseph first cousins?
Are Richard Carter and Elizabeth Musprett the parents of Ann Carter?; they are baptizing an Ann 13 Nov 1713 at Andover. They baptize four daughters at Andover: Elizabeth (b 22 Apr 1702), Sarah (b 21 May 1703), Mary (b 27 Feb 1711), and Anne (b 13 Nov 1713) as well as Richard (b 13 Dec 1704), Thomas (b 15 Jun 1707), Josiah (b 21 Dec 1708), John (b 26 Apr 1717). The names are interesting with respect to Mary Carter who married Thomas King and their children were named Mary, Elizabeth and Joanna. Ann Carter married to Thomas Blake did not have any daughters. Given that Ann died in 1734 you might have expected to see Mary (Carter) King call a child Ann but the next two girls are named Elizabeth and Joanna. Interesting though to look at names. Richard Carter and Elizabeth Musprett named their first son Richard and their first daughter Elizabeth. I will investigate to see if Richard might be the son of Thomas Carter though given that the second son is named Thomas. The second daughter was called Sarah so could investigate Elizabeth Musprett having Sarah as her mother. Interestingly there is an Elizabeth Musprat baptized 20 Feb 1682 at Andover the daughter of Thomas Musprat.

Results of Research at Salt Lake City - 6 Dec 2008
No new work on the images from Salt Lake City today. I decided instead to look at Abbots Ann where my Pearce family lived. Elizabeth Pearce married John Coleman 7 Oct 1771 at Abbots Ann. John was baptized 13 Feb 1737 at Upper Clatford which seems to tell a tale of declining fortune in this family. The Coleman family had been Inn Keepers at Goodworth Clatford. His grandparents Clement and Katherine (Holeridge) Coleman had continuously held a licence there from 1716 to 1726 (Clement died in 1721). His father Clement was baptized at Goodworth Clatford 25 Oct 1704 and married to Dinah Bever (marriage date unknown which is a reminder that I need to check the fiche for Goodworth Clatford and Upper Clatford for this marriage as I work my way back). Elizabeth Pearce I hadn't been able to locate so decided to spend some time looking at the fiche for Abbots Ann and discovered Elizabeth Pearce's baptism 26 Jul 1739 although very very difficult to read. Her parents were William Pearce and Elizabeth. Possibly this is the marriage between William Pearce and Elizabeth Hopgood 25 Apr 1736 at Collingbourne Kingston as I can not find a marriage in this time frame in the Abbots Ann Register. There are two earlier Pearce marriages at Abbots Ann with one for a William and the other for a Peter (1707 and 1704). It was this Peter that attracted my attention as I found his Inn license from the 1720s time period at Abbots Ann. I have started to transcribe the register for Abbots Ann but it is a very slow process as the earliest register is one of the worst that I have seen. I did feel that this was a successful find though for Elizabeth Pearce.
I added Roberts to my webpage just to increase the possibility of locating descendants of this family line. Ellen Roberts married Thomas Taylor 29 Jun 1857 at Birmingham. She was less than 16 years old (b 18 Oct 1841; bap 6 Dec 1841 St Martin Birmingham), her mother had died two years earlier and the name of one of the witnesses at the marriage was the next door neighbour of this family on the 1841 census (Sarah Hadley) whom Thomas married 27 Dec 1859. Thomas himself died in 1860 or 1861 as he isn't alive on the 1861 census (Sarah is a widow with his three sons). This is my mtDNA line with my thought that this Ellen is the mother of my Ellen Taylor (b 9 Oct 1859 at Birmingham). Ellen Roberts had three brothers: Thomas (b 2 Sep 1843; bap 6 Nov 1843 St Martin Birmingham), James (b 5 Oct 1845; bap 8 Jan 1846 St Martin Birmingham), and Joseph (b 27 Sep 1847, bap 18 Oct 1847 St Martin Birmingham). Joseph was married to Mary Maria Odams Dec quarter 1869 at Aston Warwick. They had four children: Elizabeth b 1875, William b 1878, Alfred b 1885, Nellie b 1888 all born at Birmingham. The parents of Ellen Roberts were: Thomas Roberts and Ellen Lawley married 29 Nov 1840 at St Martins Birmingham. Ellen's father was Joseph Lawley and according to the census of 1851 Ellen was born at Wellington Shropshire. The possible trek back on my mtDNA continues to be brickwalled in the Midlands.
We attended the Opera Doctor Atomic at the theatre live streamed from the Met in New York City. It was my first event out since I took ill. I debated going as I am still having some pain in my ribs where I fell down but it ended up being quite practical. We sat near the level and by the edge as I didn't want anyone to accidentally knock me down! Opera was very well done.
Christmas Tree up this evening and will finish decorating when everyone is here tomorrow.
Finished proofreading Ed's UEL newsletter that he produced for the Branch. I want to continue to decrease my external commitments and I am looking at what else I can handoff or eliminate from my responsibilities. Although I enjoy the DNA work I have decided I do not really have time to become heavily involved in course writing which is one item that I have been mulling around. I have spent a fair amount of time reading and preparing but I do not think that I want to spend the time on it.

Results of Research at Salt Lake City - 19 Nov 2008
The plans for today were to work on the Manorial Documents for Upper Clatford and area. I did transcribe a document listing all the properties that paid taxes in Upper Clatford and actually found one of my ancestor's sisters living in a cottage. This information wasn't dated but her living in a cottage places it in the 1740s to 1760s range. Since I would like to learn more about my King and Blake family in this time frame I will continue transcribing all the images (about 50) of the Manorial Documents. The writing is very ornate so will be a challenge as I get used to the handwriting. My ancestor's sister was Susannah Bever and she never married. She appeared to be living alone at the cottage as her name was the only one mentioned. I rather wondered if Dinah (her older sister) eventually lived with her as her husband died in 1753 and Dinah didn't die until 1783.
I had transcribed part of a document for an individual who was unable to read this interesting two page letter and sent that off to him. The writing is from the mid 1800s and has a strong slant with poor framing of letters so quite difficult to read. I will consider doing more but it will be a "make work" task when I am not working on my own. Although I like to do paleography, my interest is actually in older documents.
We attended the Canadian documentary film - Passchendale. It was certainly all that it was said to be and more. If World War One defined us as a nation then this film defines our film industry. It was the best war film that I ever saw actually. I can remember my great uncle telling us about the trenches as he served with the CEF in France. He was only just there when he was shot in the head with shrapnel. They were never able to get it all out and every once in a while a piece would work its way to the surface of his skin. We used to be amazed that he could live with all that metal in him.
I will continue working on the Manorial Documents. I rather think the 2500 images that I brought back are going to keep me busy for a very long time.
