The Siderfin family of West Somerset was one of my original one-name studies with the Guild of one name studies. I have since surrendered the study to Mark Siderfin. He has a strong interest in the family and lives ideally where it is easiest to pursue the deeper research of this family. I have sent him all of my material with the exception of emails that I received from people. All of the details that I received from the individuals is included in my work with the exception of material after 1913 for births, 1927 for marriages and 1936 for deaths. I am abiding with the restrictions of my own country in this regard. Whenever someone writes from the Siderfin family to ask me any details I shall highly recommend Mark and provide his email address to them but I would feel it was somewhat remiss of me to provide details given to me without their permission.
My own descent from the Siderfin family of West Somerset is quite far back actually as it was my 3x great grandmother. Finding her maiden name was one of my big breakthroughs along with the birthplace of her daughter Elizabeth Rew (my 2x great grandmother). Elizabeth Rew (daughter of Elizabeth Siderfin) was born at Bratton and baptized at Minehead. Elizabeth Siderfin was baptized at Wootton Courtney 19 Jun 1759 and that was one of my clues for establishing just which Robert Siderfin was her father. James Sanders in his book decided that the father of Elizabeth was a very elderly Robert that does not appear to have ever married. Rather her father was Robert Siderfin son of Augustine Siderfin (teacher at Cutcombe). Robert was baptized at Cutcombe 23 Jun 1726 and buried 9 Feb 1788 at Selworthy. I have no idea at this time what he did at Selworthy but suspect he was a farmer. Still working on that information. He married Grace Kent 5 Feb 1752 at Selworthy. Likely Augustine Siderfin moved from Cutcombe to Wootton Courtney between the birth of John (elder brother to Elizabeth) and Elizabeth as John was baptized at Cutcombe and Elizabeth at Wootton Courtney. Most of the younger children were baptized at Selworthy with the exception of Ann (married to John Nurcombe) who was also baptized at Wootton Courtney. Augustine Siderfin was buried 1 Mar 1762 at Wootton Courtney.
Having solved the query as to whether or not a Robert Siderfin who was in his late 60s would have married and then had eight children I moved on to other mysteries in the book. The father of Augustine Siderfin was Robert Siderfin and his mother's first name was known to be Elizabeth. James Sanders named her as Elizabeth Blackford. However, not long after I wrote a blog about the Siderfin family I had a comment from an individual who had a will for Augustine Question who had died in October 1708 at Carhampton. In his will he mentions his daughter Elizabeth Siderfin. Just to make the connection quite solid he also kindly mentions all of his seven children who were alive at that time. Another error in the book and it clearly establishes the link between generations. I had already heard of a will by Thomasine Siderfin (widow) who also mentions her son Robert and grandsons Robert, John and Augustine. Her husband is thought to be John and that is the point where I am busy proving that John was the son of Robert Siderfin and Ursula Webber. Augustine Question's will is inset below:

Moggeridge-Mogridge family of Porlock and Wootton Courtney, Somerset
The Moggeridge/Mogridge/Moggridge/Mogeridge family has quite a variety of spellings and the one name study for this family lists a few more: Muggeridge, Mockridge, Muggridge, Mugridge. My line is found thus far in the West Somerset area in the old hundred of Carhampton namely Porlock, Wootton Courtney, Timberscombe and Selworthy. Selworthy is two miles from Porlock, Wootton Courtney is four miles from Porlock, and Timberscombe is six miles from Porlock.
The line back into Somerset begins with Elizabeth Rew who married John Pincombe 9 Jan 1834 at Bishops Nympton. Elizabeth was born a twin and she and Charlotte were baptized 20 Dec 1801 at Minehead (their parents John Rew and Elizabeth Siderfin were farming at Bratton). I have pictures of three of my 2x great grandparents and one of these pictures is of Elizabeth. It was taken by a photographer in London ON Canada probably in the mid 1870s. Elizabeth died 7 Apr 1876 at her home in Westminster Township. She was buried in Lambeth ON in the cemetery at Trinity Anglican Church along with her husband, her second eldest son, his wife, and two grandchildren (children of her second eldest son).
It was Elizabeth's father's line that leads back to the Moggridge family. John Rew was baptized 27 Feb 1766 at Selworthy and he died 16 Jan 1848 at Sheepwash Farm, near Bishops Nympton, Devon and he was buried 25 Jan 1848 at Selworthy, Somerset. I can scarcely imagine the trek back from Bishops Nympton through the Exmoor to Selworthy. Even now the roads are difficult and windy. Perhaps his coffin traveled up to the coast and by boat but in mid-winter that hardly seems likely. Always possible a sleigh was used if there was sufficient snow. John Rew's parents were John Rew and Sarah Moggridge who married 25 Jun 1761 at Selworthy. John and Sarah had six children and I have information beyond baptisms on only four of them thus far.

First John Rew who was baptized 1 Dec 1722 at Wootton Courtney and was buried 11 Sep 1771 at Minehead. His parents were John Rew and Mary Vicary who were married 30 Apr 1720 at Wootton Courtney. They had eight children

John Rew was himself baptized 12 Jul 1696 at Wootton Courtney and the son of Timothy Rew and Grace Moggeridge who were married 2 Nov 1695 at Wootton Courtney. Timothy was buried 20 Feb 1737 at Wootton Courtney. Grace Moggeridge was baptized 2 Dec 1668 at Porlock and she was buried 3 Dec 1732 at Wootton Courtney. I have not yet pulled out any other children for this couple.
The parents of Grace Moggeridge were Robert Moggeridge and Elizabeth Snow who were married 26 Nov 1659 at Porlock. Robert was buried 7 Aug 1720 at Porlock. Elizabeth was baptized 5 Mar 1635 at Porlock the daughter of John Snow and Margaret Marton who were married 30 Apr 1633 at Porlock. Robert was the son of David Moggeridge.
Robert Moggeridge and Elizabeth Snow had three children
David baptized 16 Dec 1661 at Porlock and married to Emot. Emot and David had two children Symon baptized 28 Mar 1686 at Culbone and married to Mary Phelp 9 Feb 1724 at Selworthy. They in turn had two daughters Mary baptized 31 Jan 1728 at Selworthy and Sarah baptized 28 Dec 1731 at Selworthy. This Sarah married John Rew 5 Jun 1761 at Selworthy and this brings these two families together. John's paternal grandmother Grace was the daughter of Robert and Sarah's paternal grandfather David was a son of Robert (i.e. their grandparents were siblings) and so John Rew and Sarah Moggridge were 2nd cousins.
I pulled this information out of the parish registers a few years back and now I wish to revisit them and pull out all the Moggridge, Rew, Kent information because Robert Siderfin married Grace Kent 5 Feb 1752 at Selworthy and their daughter Elizabeth married John Rew. I am curious to see if the Kent family is also cousin to the Rew family in that Betty Rew (daughter of John Rew and Sarah Moggridge) married John Kent at Selworthy in 1793. Is this Grace Kent's family (i.e. was John Kent her nephew/cousin?).
The Rew family is eventually found at Sheepwash Farm near Bishops Nympton and there was a Moggridge family living there earlier. Were the Moggridge family in North Devon related to the Moggridge family at Porlock? It would explain why Thomas moved from Selworthy to Bishops Nympton and perhaps also explain why Elizabeth Rew who lived in Somerset ended up marrying John Pincombe at Bishops Nympton.

Siderfin one name study
I am really pleased to announce that Mark Siderfin will be taking over my Siderfin one name study at the Guild of one Name Studies. I have very much enjoyed working on the Siderfin family but not having local access to records I was most pleased to meet Mark a couple of years ago (online) and to share some material with him as he did with me. I hope to see the Siderfin study really grow now. My 3x great grandmother was Elizabeth Siderfin who was baptized (Betty) 19 June 1759 at Wootton Courtney. Her family lived at Selworthy and Wootton Courtney provided me one of the clues as to her grandparents. Augustine Siderfin (her grandfather) was buried at Wootton Courtney 1 March 1762. Prior to that he had taught school at Cutcombe. The parents of Elizabeth were Robert Siderfin and Grace Kent who had married 5 Feb 1752 at Selworthy. Elizabeth had seven siblings and there are a number of records to establish the children (and likely the birth order which is also verified by baptisms). Elizabeth married John Rew 30 Jan 1792 at Selworthy and they had seven children (the last two being twins). Elizabeth (one of the twins) was my 2x great grandmother and she was baptized 20 Dec 1801 at Minehead (probably because they lived at Bratton). Elizabeth was buried 20 Dec 1828 at Selworthy as Elizabeth Rew.
I am continuing on with the Upper Clatford burial register (Parish Register 1) and I hope to complete it later today which will bring me up to 1724 for baptisms, marriages and burials. There was a large gap in the burial register between 1613 and 1631 with no entries on these years and all of the years between. In total there are 267 burials up to the end of 1643. At the end of 1643 there was 458 baptisms so the situation at Penton Mewsey does appear to be one of healthy growth in this time period. There were also 100 marriages in this time period. Interestingly the marriages do not really affect the growth so much because people move about a great deal marrying even to the little village of Penton Mewsey. Were there so many run away marriages in those days or was it that people were working on the local farms and decided to get married and the priest put down their place of settlement rather than their place of living at that time. Was there a big difference in that at time time? Was settlement an issue? Will gradually work through these queries. It doesn't appear to affect my families at all as they tend to stay for a long time in one particular place but there are a couple that move about like the Coleman family from Goodworth Clatford to Upper Clatford to Abbotts Ann. There always seem to be an Inn involved though with this family - perhaps they are selling off their lease at one place and moving on to the next to see if it is a better venture. Slowly the pieces come together for my family lines as more and more of their past is revealed to me in small ways. However, for some family lines there is so little known especially my Buller line in Bermondsey. I need to read the registers there for St Olave, St Mary Magdalen, St Mary (Newington) and a couple of others. Perhaps then I will be able to sort out my Buller family. Gradually the families that married into the Buller line are coming into focus - Beard and Hemsley.
I wrote to three of the Blake researchers that I am corresponding with yesterday but haven't heard anything back yet. I told them my rethink on the Robert Blake at Penton Mewsey and that I rather think he is the Robert Blake at Andover. One reason for this thought is the Admon for John Blake at Penton Mewsey written 27 August 1757.

There are four at Andover but none of them are likely the John father and son pair in the admon.

A little more work on John/John Blake and I may be able to fit him into a particular Blake line. The Blake family does continue at Penton Mewsey and to this day there are a few Blake families at Penton Mewsey.
I am continuing on with the Upper Clatford burial register (Parish Register 1) and I hope to complete it later today which will bring me up to 1724 for baptisms, marriages and burials. There was a large gap in the burial register between 1613 and 1631 with no entries on these years and all of the years between. In total there are 267 burials up to the end of 1643. At the end of 1643 there was 458 baptisms so the situation at Penton Mewsey does appear to be one of healthy growth in this time period. There were also 100 marriages in this time period. Interestingly the marriages do not really affect the growth so much because people move about a great deal marrying even to the little village of Penton Mewsey. Were there so many run away marriages in those days or was it that people were working on the local farms and decided to get married and the priest put down their place of settlement rather than their place of living at that time. Was there a big difference in that at time time? Was settlement an issue? Will gradually work through these queries. It doesn't appear to affect my families at all as they tend to stay for a long time in one particular place but there are a couple that move about like the Coleman family from Goodworth Clatford to Upper Clatford to Abbotts Ann. There always seem to be an Inn involved though with this family - perhaps they are selling off their lease at one place and moving on to the next to see if it is a better venture. Slowly the pieces come together for my family lines as more and more of their past is revealed to me in small ways. However, for some family lines there is so little known especially my Buller line in Bermondsey. I need to read the registers there for St Olave, St Mary Magdalen, St Mary (Newington) and a couple of others. Perhaps then I will be able to sort out my Buller family. Gradually the families that married into the Buller line are coming into focus - Beard and Hemsley.
I wrote to three of the Blake researchers that I am corresponding with yesterday but haven't heard anything back yet. I told them my rethink on the Robert Blake at Penton Mewsey and that I rather think he is the Robert Blake at Andover. One reason for this thought is the Admon for John Blake at Penton Mewsey written 27 August 1757.
"On which day Administration of all and singular the goods and Chattles Rights and Credits of John Blake late of the Parish of Penton Mewsey in the County of Southampton and Diocese of Winchester Deceased Intestate, was granted and Committed unto John Blake of the Parish of Andover in the County and Diocese aforesaid the Eldest and Lawful Son of the said Deceased and the said John Blake was duly sworn.
