Canham family of West Harnham, Wiltshire

Elizabeth Canham married George Lywood 18 Jul 1780 at West Harnham, Wiltshire. I know only a couple of items about Elizabeth.

1. Elizabeth and George had three known children:

Jane was born circa 1781 at West Harnham and married James Tyneham 9 Aug 1797 at West Harnham

John was baptized 22 Jan 1784 at West Harnham and married Ann Meaden 28 Sep 1808 at Odstock (they had six children: Mary Ann, William, Thomas, John (died as an infant), Andrew and Emma)

 George baptized 7 May 1786 at West Harnham and married to Martha Peck 26 Oct 1817 at Milston (they had four children David, John Elizabeth (my great great grandmother) and George)
 
2. Elizabeth was buried 9 Feb 1829 at Odstock, Wiltshire and she was 77 years of age so born circa 1752.

All of the Information on Elizabeth was acquired from Warwick Lywood who runs the Lywood one name study at the Guild of one name studies. He did not at that time know her parent's names.

In my first research post on this family I mention Fugglestone St Peter but that is because George (whom she married) was baptized 11 Nov 1750 at Fugglestone St Peter).

In the past two years I have not looked at this family as life has just been too busy. I think that I will spend my hour research time looking to see if anything new has appeared. Then I will change this research day to another surname if I am not finding anything.These records following all from Find My Past.

There was an Elizabeth Canham baptized 18 Feb 1750 at St Martin in the Fields, Middlesex daughter of Henry and Elizabeth Canham (born 7 Feb 1750). There was a Canham family still in London (Boyd's Inhabitants) early in the 1800s with John Canham and Elizabeth his wife (John was born 1777). They lived at St Benet's Pauls Wharf. An Elizabeth Canham of Middlesex left a will December 1780 (SOG). There were 31 marriages for Elizabeth Canham between 1762 and 1814. 17 of the marriages were in Suffolk, 4 in Cambridgeshire, 4 in London or Middlesex, 3 in Lincolnshire, 2 in Essex and 1 in Kent.

The Public Profiler for Great Britain shows that the highest frequency for the Canham surname continues to be Suffolk with very few in Wiltshire in 1998 and in 1881 there were none in Wiltshire with again Suffolk being the location for the highest frequency. I believe that I shall leave this surname and move on to another.

For my next research day I shall look at the Carter surname with two of my 4x great grandmothers being Ann Carter married to Thomas Blake and Mary Carter married to Thomas King. These families being at Andover and Upper Clatford respectively.

To speed up looking at the Lywood family I will transcribe the next Lywood will today.

Lywood Family Research of Milston, West Harnham, Fugglestone St Peter, South Newton, Fovant, and Compton Chamberlayne, Wiltshire

For the most part, I have learned about my Lywood family from the Lywood one name study which was created by Warwick Lywood. I had managed to work my way back a couple of generations from my 2x great grandmother Elizabeth Lywood (married to William Rawlin[g]s) but his work took me back another six generations to John Lywood who was buried 18 Apr 1618 at Compton Chamberlayne, Wiltshire and his wife Edith Thayer who was buried 24 Nov 1612 also at Compton Chamberlayne.This couple had two sons John and Robert. They appear to be the two distinct lines of Lywood family with my line descending from Robert Lywood who married Alice Baylie 10 Jan 1623 (Old Style) at Fovant, Wiltshire. Robert was buried 14 Dec 1660 at Fovant and Alice was buried 12 Apr 1675 also at Fovant.

The Lywood family left very few wills. On the Wiltshire and Swindon Archive Catalogue there are four wills/administrations. They are for William Lywood in 1725 at Burcombe, Andrew Lywood in 1727 at Fugglestone St Peter, Charles Lywood in 1718 at Salisbury and Mary Lywood in 1727 at Stratford Sub Castle. The last two can be purchased online. The alternative names Leywood, Lyewood do not produce any results.

There are six wills on the National Archives website namely Will of Lady Maria Lywood, widow of Amsterdam in 1786, John Lywood gentleman of Romsey 1766, Hugh Lywood cooper of St Mary Whitechapel in 1741, John Lywood mariner in 1700, Leonard Lywood gentleman of Barton Stacey in 1854 and John Lywood of Barton Stacey in 1830. None of these wills fit into my family lines but I did acquire the wills of John Lywood 1766, John Lywood 1700 and John Lywood 1830 which I will transcribe before moving on to my new thoughts on what research I could do instead on the Lywood Research day.

The one item that Warwick didn't know was that my George Lywood (grandfather of Elizabeth Lywood my great grandmother) was at Waterloo as well as serving at Martinique during the Peninsular Wars. George was in the 23rd Regiment of Foot now known as the Royal Welsh Fusiliers. I discovered a published history of the regiment at their Museum in Caernarfon (Carnarvon) Castle in Wales when we were on our bus tour in 2008 and of course I purchased it for just 20 pounds. I have read it cover to cover and it was fascinating reading. George came to Halifax in 1807 and was thus my first ancestor to set foot in Canada! However, he didn't stay moving on to Martinique with the troops.

It is unlikely that I can do any better than Warwick with my Lywood family. I shall contemplate between now and the next Lywood research day which family to work on. I am leaning towards the Holmes family. George married Martha Peck 26 Oct 1817 at Milston, Wiltshire and Martha was the daughter of Elizabeth Peck. I wonder if there is a story there completely untold and likely never to be told. Elizabeth was the daughter of Joseph Peck and Ann Holmes who married 26 Jul 1740 at Milston. Joseph and Ann Peck had eight children all at Milston namely:

Joseph was buried 7 Oct 1791 at Milston and Ann his wife was buried there 5 Jul 1778. Both the Holmes and the Peck families have a long history in this region with Ann having been baptized 17 Jul 1712 at Figheldean and Joseph baptized 4 Apr 1718 at Milston. I am interested in the Holmes family and perhaps that would be a good study to do on the Lywood research day. The father of Joseph was Thomas Peck and he married Joanna Holmes 13 Sep 1705 at Milston. Discovering the Holmes family would be an interesting project. I purchased the Milston parish registers some time ago and have now also purchased a few others on our trip to the WDYTYA Conference in London in February.

Canham at Fugglestone St Peter Wiltshire

The surname Canham has always been a brickwall ever since Warwick Lywood passed me the name of the wife of George Lywood (baptized 11 Nov 1750 at Fugglestone St Peter). George Lywood and Elizabeth Canham married 18 Jul 1780 at West Harnham. Elizabeth was buried 9 Feb 1829 at Odstock at the age of 77 giving an approximate year of birth as 1752. Looking at the Surname Profiler (World) shows the highest density for this surname to be in the British Isles, second highest in Australia/New Zealand  with a much lower frequency in North America. The village of Fugglestone St Peter is one mile east of Wilton and basically on the way into Salisbury these days. We passed by the roadsign on our tour of England.

The surname Canham is a locational name and the greatest frequency of this surname is in East Anglia with a slightly lower level in Wiltshire. In 1881 there were 49 occurrences per million names and in 1998 there were 51 occurrences per million names. It is thought to be a British name. Looking at the Protestation Returns for this area and Fugglestone St Peter includes Quidhampton and Bemerton and is listed in the Protestation Returns as:

I have begun my Protestation Returns from the Wiltshire Notes and Queries into a flat file it would appear. No sign of the Canham family in West Harneham.

I need to purchase the West Harnham Parish Register fiche to see if there is anything in the register that might give me details on the Canham family. I wonder if they have filmed the original parish registers? Hampshire Record Office did an absolutely superb job of filming their parish registers.

It would appear that in eight weeks when I look at this family again I shall be checking on family trees on World Connect and Ancestry to see if anything further has been posted which might give me some clues on this family.

George Lywood and Elizabeth Canham are my 4x great grandparents and the parents of George Lywood (baptized 7 May 1786 at West Harnham) and married to Martha Peck 26 October 1817 at Milston.
