The Tremblay family has been separated into generations and I will review the transcriptions done the last research day which was 4 May 2011 and make any necessary corrections or changes that I can do at this time and then carry on with further transcriptions for this post.
The marriage of Lucien Tremblay and Marie Bernard transcription review led to an interesting revelation with the bride's cousin Louis Blondin dit _uce appearing to be an important part of the marriage lines. I am somewhat stumped with the Blondin family line and this may prove to be helpful when I work on that line.
The parents of Lucien Tremblay were thus identified as Michel Tremblay and Ursule Gagnon who were themselves married 4 Jun 1793 at Baie St Paul.

Doutre Family
The parents of Josephte Doutre married to Olivier Gagnon 26 Jun 1844 at Curran were listed as Etienne Doutre and Victoire Lalonde in both the transcribed parish registers and the tabulated generations of the Gagnon family that I found at Library and Archives Canada. I have not seen an original copy of the parish register. However the baptism of Josephte Doutre is most helpful

The baptism of Josephte Doutre verifies all the information that we have for her; born in Plantagenet and the daughter of Etienne D'outre and Victoire Lalonde. This is not that common a name which is also helpful and Plantagenet was a relatively young area. However, it would still be nice to see the original entry. The Death Registration for Josette Gagnon read female, death date 2 Jan 1901 at age 73 on Lot 6 Concession 8 of North Plantagenent, annuitant, widow, Roman Catholic and born at Plantagenet and the informant was Felix Gagnon.
Etienne Doutre and Victoire Lalonde were married 4 Feb 1822 at St Michel in Vaudreuil and it was a second marriage for Etienne Doutre.

Gagnon family
My last research day on the Gagnon family I determined that this research day would be spent collecting references that I have not already acquired in terms of original documents which I will also transcribe.
The eighth generation of this family is Marie Louise Gagnon who was born 25 May 1845 at St Polycarpe and buried 10 May 1936 at Notre Dame Cemetery in Ottawa Ontario. She was married to Léon Matté 15 Oct 1865 at North Plantagenet, Prescott County. Her parents were Olivier Gagnon and Josephte Doutre who were themselves married 26 Jun 1844 at Saint Luc Parish in Curran, Prescott County.
The marriage registration for Marie Louise Gagnon states that she was born at St Polycarpe and I checked the parish registers from her date of birth onwards (to one month) but did not find her baptism at St Polycarpe. Her parents were married in Curran and younger children of this family were baptized at Plantagenet. Josephte Doutre was born at Plantagenet so it isn't a matter of her going home to have her first baby since Plantagenet was her home. I will check to see if the parish registers for Curran/Plantagenet are online on Ancestry. I have checked this earlier and the records prior to 1877 for these two parishes are not on ancestry. I shall put on my to do list for Library and Archives Canada a look at the Parish Registers (published) for this area when next I visit.
I checked out Cornwall - St Colomban Parish Register. I found one interesting set of data for the Confirmation 15 July 1845

A mixture of French Canadian and Scot at Cornwall it looks like. However, no Gagnon in that list anyway. This register is in English.
Reading through a few more pages of this register just to see the names. That is a rough transcription; I just read it through and typed but it might be of interest to someone. I found the baptism of Priscilla Gagnon:

A quick check with World Connect shows that this is the second wife of Francois Gagnon and that he was the son of Isaac Gagnon and Antoinette Pilote with the parents of Isaac being Joseph Gagnon and Luce Simard. The parents of Joseph Gagnon being Etienne Gagnon and his third wife Marie Madeleine Lavoie. Continuing back I do discover that these two lines are descended from the same couple in France, there are probably too distant in relationship. It was interesting though finding the relationship between these two families.
The Cornwall Parish Register for St Columban did not yield a baptism for Marie Louise Gagnon. Hopefully, I will be into Library and Archives Canada before I work on the Gagnon family again just to see if I can find any documentation for Marie Louise Gagnon. The next research day I will move back to Olivier Gagnon (father of Marie Louise Gagnon) and ensure that I have pulled all of his records. I also need to collect the census records for Marie Louise after marriage but will work on that with the Matté family.

Racine family
Anne (Anna) Racine married Joseph Jean Baptiste Chénier 15 May 1882 and her parents were identified as Didace Racine and Elisabeth Dorris/Dorace/Dorvas and thus far no one has been able to determine the spelling of this surname. I discovered a James and Mary Dorris coming from County Leitrim, Garvagh Townlands in 1834 and Elisabeth is their eldest daughter. She isn't mentioned on the list however and would have been about 4 years of age. But I will look at the Racine family only and discussion on Elisabeth will wait for a future research day.
Anne was born and baptized 19 Oct 1858 at Ste Scholastique with her parents having married 1 May 1848 at St Hermas.

Finding this marriage was a challenge as the surname of Marie Josephte is Jubinville dit St Michel but the marriage of the parents (as identified in the marriage transcription below) of Marie Josephte identifies her father as Jean Baptiste St Michel married to Angélique Quenneville (the marriage of her parents has Jean Baptiste Jubinville and Angélique Quenneville and Tanguay is most helpful using Jubinville all the time with St Michel as the dit name. The marriage of Jean Baptiste Jubinville and Angélique Quenneville is found in Tanguay and is celebrated 3 Feb 1733 at St Laurent (to be reviewed when the Jubinville dit St Michel family is blogged).

The parents of Michel Racine are thus identified as Joseph Racine and Marie Plante who were themselves married 6 Nov 1725 at St Jean, I.O. This was Joseph Racine's third marriage. He was the son of François Racine and Marie Bauché who were married 29 Oct 1676 at Ste Famille, I.O. François Racine was the son of Etienne Racine and Marguerite Martin and they were married 22 May 1638 at Québec. Since they were the emigrant ancestors they are Generation 1 and amongst the earliest settlers after the return to Québec.
François Racine married to Marie Bauché is Generation 2. The present generation is descended from two daughters of Etienne Racine and Marguerite Martin - 1. Marie Madeleine married to Noel Simard 22 Nov 1661 at Chateau Richer and she is Generation 2 and 2. Marguerite Racine married to Jean Gagnon circa late 1667 (contract signed 6 Nov 1667 with notary Claude Aubert) and she is Generation 2.
Joseph Racine married to Marie Plante 6 Nov 1725 at St Jean Baptiste, I.O. is Generation 3.

Jean Baptiste Racine married to Marie Françoise Brière is Generation 5.
Didace Edouard Racine married to Elisabeth Dorris is Generation 6.

Michel Racine married to Marie Josephte Jubinville dit St Michel is Generation 4.
Jean Baptiste Racine married to Marie Françoise Brière is Generation 5.
Didace Edouard Racine married to Elisabeth Dorris is Generation 6.
Anne (Anna) Racine married to Joseph Jean Baptiste Chénier is Generation 7.
The next research day I will continue to collect the documents for this family line including the contract for the first Racine marriage if it is available.

Tremblay and Labelle Families
The Tremblay Family is very well published at Library and Archives Canada. When I was first searching for the marriage of Rosalie Tremblay and Homère Grégoire I was finding it quite difficult to put this family together. I found them on the census and eventually I found their marriage 6 Apr 1902 at Embrun ON. But I still have not found their baptisms. Finding their marriage did give me their parents' names which was very helpful. The Marriage Registration reads: Groom Homère Grégoire, Age 25, Residence Embrun, Place of Birth Embrun, Bachelor, Labourer, Parents Antoine Grégoire and Delima Ladéroute, Bride Rosalie Tremblay, Age17, Residence Embrun, Place of Birth Grenville, Sinster, Parents Delphis Tremblay and Lucie Labelle, Witnesses: Israel Grégoire and Delphis Tremblay both of Embrun.
Part of my confusion with the wife of Antoine Grégoire was this entry Delima Ladéroute for his wife. Since she was also referred to as Rosa Séguin I wondered if I had two different wives but eventually I was able to prove they were one and the same person but more on that with the Séguin dit Ladéroute family.
The marriage of Adolphus Tremblay and Lucie Labelle was 4 Aug 1879 at Notre Dame de Sept Doleurs, Grenville Québec. Going from Delphis to Adolfus was simplified with the census.

Reaching back this one generation however did not take me back far enough to look at any of these families in Tanguay. I continued to work backwards with the marriages. Lucien Tremblay married to Marie Bernard 12 Feb 1833 at Montebello appeared to be the closest to Marie Blondin but did involve a fair amount of searching. The father of Marie Bernard was François Bernard dit LaFrançois and her mother Charlotte Robin. The parents of Lucien Tremblay were Michel Tremblay and Ursule Gagnon.

This only brought me back to 1833 on the Tremblay side. I decided to work my way back on the Tremblay side to see if I could find a marriage which Tanguay reported for this family. The mariage of Michel Tremblay and Ursule Gagnon 4 Jun 1793 at Baie St-Paul was a very faint scan but eventually I was able to read it sufficiently to determine that the parents of Michel Tremblay were Louis-Marie Tremblay and likely Marie Girard which is also the choice of many posting this couple to World Connect and published Tremblay family studies. Continuing to track the Tremblay family the marriage of Louis-Marie Tremblay and Marie-Anne Victoire Girard was celebrated 12 Jan 1757 at Baie St Paul. This marriage is in Tanguay and working backwards through Tanguay the parents of Louis-Marie Tremblay were Nicolas Tremblay and Louise Simard who married 18 Jan 1724 at Baie St Paul. The parents of Nicolas Tremblay were Pierre Tremblay and Marie Roussin (his second wife) who married 15 Nov 1685 at L'Ange-Gardien. Pierre's first marriage was to Madeleine Simard 3 Nov 1683 at Ste Anne. The parents of Pierre Tremblay were Pierre Tremblay and Ozanne Achon 2 Oct 1657 at Québec City. This first Pierre was the emigrant from France and will be Generation 1. Generation 2 is Pierre Tremblay his son. Generation 3 is Nicolas Tremblay. Generation 4 is Louis-Marie Tremblay. Generation 5 is Michel Tremblay. Generation 6 is Lucien Tremblay. Generation 7 is Joseph Delphis Tremblay. Generation 8 is Rosalie Tremblay who married Homère Grégoire.
The present generation is descended from two children of Pierre Tremblay and Ozanne Achon - Pierre as mentioned and Jeanne Tremblay who married Antoine Perron 15 Jan 1691 at L'Ange-Gardien. More on the Perron family later. Jeanne is in Generation 2.
The present generation is descended from three children of Pierre Tremblay and Marie Roussin - Nicolas as mentioned. Second Marie-Madeleine Tremblay their daughter married Joseph Gagnon 10 Apr 1709 at Baie St Paul. Marie-Madeleine is in Generation 3. Third Etienne Tremblay married to Marie Fortin 12 Nov 1715 at Baie St Paul. Etienne is in Generation 3. Their daughter Cecile Tremblay married Joseph Simard 16 Jan 1742 at Les Eboulements. Cecile is in Generation 4. I prepared the folders for the Tremblay family and the next research day for the Tremblay family will be spent collecting any missing registrations for them.
Returning now to the marriage of Joseph Delphis Tremblay and Lucie Labelle and looking at the parents of Lucie Labelle I found a marriage for François Labelle and Marcélline Lacroix 19 Feb 1855 at Notre Dame de Sept Doleurs, Grenville, Québec. Collecting this marriage I found the parents of François Labelle to be Antoine Labelle and Clémence Potvin who married 3 Jun 1834 at St Martin (Laval). From their marriage registration the parents of Antoine Labelle were Jean Baptiste Labelle and Louise Legault who in turn married 11 Jan 1808 at Ste Rose de Lima (Laval). This marriage is not listed in Tanguay and finding their marriage the parents of Jean Baptiste Labelle were Jean Baptiste Labelle and Marie Josephte Valiquette who married 30 Sep 1771 at St Vincent de Paul. Nor is this marriage in Tanguay and searching through the parents of Jean Baptiste Labelle were Jean François Labelle and Marie Madeleine Vandendaigue who married 24 Nov 1738 at St François de Sales. This marriage is listed in Tanguay and Madeleine was the first wife of Jean François Labelle. The parents of Jean François were Jean François Labelle and Denise Major who married 9 Sep 1711 and Pointe aux Trembles. The parents of Jean François Labelle were Guillaume Labelle and Anne Charbonneau who married 23 Nov 1671 at Notre Dame in Montréal. Guillaume Labelle is the emigrant as far as I can tell thus far so he is Generation 1. Checking to see if this is correct in the marriage registration but I can only find the Guillaume Label to Marie Garnier marriage in the Index (lists only the name of Groom and Bride) 23 Sep 1761. I note that the mother of Anne Charbonneau according to others is Marie Marguerite Garnier - perhaps the indexer made an error. This discrepancy must be worked out somehow. Checking the registers for Notre Dame in Montréal does not answer that question as they do not include marriages for 1671.
What we do know for sure is that Guillaume Labelle is likely the emigrant and so he is Generation 1. Jean François is Generation 2 and he married twice with two lines of descent (one from each marriage) but also the present generation is descended from four children of Guillaume Labelle and Anne Charbonneau. Secondly, Magdeleine Labelle married Louis Filiatreau 9 Jan 1700 at Repentigny and is in Generation 2. Thirdly, Catherine Labelle married Pierre Nadon 26 Apr 1711 (date of contract) at Ile de Jesus and is in Generation 2. Fourthly, Angélique Labelle married Joseph Ethier 28 Nov 1713 at St François de Sales and is in Generation 2.
Jean François married first Denise Major 9 Sep 1711 at Point aux Trembles and is in Generation 2. He married second Catherine Berloin dite Nantel 24 Apr 1718 at St François de Sales (Laval) and this marriage is also in Generation 2. Their daughter Marie Marguerite Labelle married Ignace Paquet and is in Generation 3. Jean François Labelle and Denise Major's son Jean François Labelle married Marie Madeleine Vandendaigue and he is in Generation 3 as well.
Generation 4 is Jean Baptiste Labelle married to Marie Josephte Valiquette.
Generation 5 is Jean Baptiste Labelle married to Louise Legault.
Generation 6 is Antoine Labelle married to Clémence Potvin.
Generation 7 is François Labelle married to Marcélline Lacroix.
Generation 8 is Lucie Labelle and she married Joseph Delphis Tremblay.
The next session on Tremblay and Labelle I will continue to pull out the scans for the baptisms, marriages and burials.

Matté and Gagnon families
Léon Matté married Marie Louise Gagnon 15 October 1865 at or near Plantagenet, Ontario in Prescott County. Léon stated that he was born at Vaudreuil Quebec, he was 22 years of age (est 1843) and he was the son of Louis Matte and Josette Bénoit. Louise stated that she was born at St Polycarpe Quebec, she was 19 years of age (est 1846) and that she was the daughter of Olivier Gagnon and Josephte Doutre.
For quite a while this couple was a brick wall for me. Léon Matte died 22 Mar 1917 and was buried 25 Mar 1917 at Notre Dame Cemetery, Ottawa. His burial lines stated that he was 73 years old (est 1844) and that Joseph Blais and Edward Gauthier were present (at some point in the future I shall determine if these were (as I suspect) sons in law). His death registration was somewhat more helpful. It stated that he was born at St. André Quebec. That he was a carriage maker by profession and that his father was Joseph Matte. The Informant was his wife Mrs. Léon Matte according to the document and they resided at 281 Guigues Avenue, Ottawa.
I placed all of my downloaded images for the Matté family once again into the generational files with Generation 8 being the daughter Florence baptized 13 Sep 1883 at St Jean Baptiste Parish, Ottawa, ON who married Joseph Valmore Bédard 30 Jan 1905 at Notre Dame Basilica, Ottawa. Using Tanquay I was able to work down to the fifth generation and then with the marriages I was able to prove the line down to Florence. The line back to the emigrant Nicolas Matté still needs to have the baptismal and burial records pulled. There are two lines of descent from Nicolas - his son Nicolas and his daughter Marie Louise.
I placed all of my downloaded images for the Gagnon family once again into the generational files with Generation 8 being Marie Louise Gagnon daughter of Olivier Gagnon and Josephte Doutre and they married 26 Jun 1844 at Curran, Saint Luc, Prescott ON. This information I obtained from the published descent of the Gagnon family. I am using it as a tool to work backwards and pull out all the documents for this family line. I have actually pulled all the records at this point for the marriages and now need to pull out the baptisms and burials. The parents of Olivier Gagnon were listed to be Louis Gagnon and Marie Elisabeth Caron who married 22 Sep 1800 at St Cuthbert Québec. The published transcription does verify this record. Mariages, sépultures et annotations marginales, paroisse St-Luc de Curran (Ontario), 1839-1994 compilé par Lucille Lalonde-Groulx, 1997 and located at Library and Archives Canada. Tanquay does not have this marriage but I was able to locate the marriage of Louis Gagnon and Marie Elisabeth Caron and the parents of Louis Gagnon were Louis Gagnon and Angélique Pelletier. Once again this marriage is not in Tanguay but once again I did find their marriage of 29 Aug 1768 at Ste Geneviève, Pierrefonds, Isle de Montréal. In turn this marriage states that the parents of Louis Gagnon were Jean Baptiste Gagnon and Marie Madeleine Bouthilllet. This marriage can be found in Tanguay. I continued pulling marriage right back to the emigrant ancestor Captain Pierre Gagnon.
I now need to pull all the baptisms and burials for the Gagnon line and indeed there are three Gagnon lines in this family tree. Jean (some write that he was a brother of Captain Pierre) and married to Marguerite Drouin and the two sons (Jean and Pierre) of Captain Pierre Gagnon.
For my next study session I wish to continue pulling documents for the Matté and Gagnon families.

Blake Family One Name Study and Bédard
With my membership in the Guild of One Name Studies comes the perk of Marriage Challenges. These are very handy especially with the price of a marriage registration certificate being now nine pounds sterling. The marriages help to establish the family lines in the 1800s and are an absolute must in any family study. I am slowly working away on the 30,000 Blake marriages in England matching up couples where possible but individual marriage challenges do this for me automatically as the data is pulled from the original parish registers and civil registers. I searched out my marriages for two today and I had already prepared my excel file for both of them so it was an easy transfer. I hadn't matched up all the marriages using the census so I proceeded to do that and it is a lengthy task to do 35 marriages working through FreeBMD and the census.
I am also working on the The Blake Newsletter and it was written by Barrie Blake this time. I am just adding or revising a couple of items - we do each others and that works very well as it is really difficult to proofread your own work.
It is certainly nice to be settling back into regular research. I need to now plan my research time for the French Canadian lines of our son in law. I have allotted one hour per day (it can easily run to two hours because of the placement) to work on each of his 32 3x great grandparents. This may seem like a lot but indeed I could just as easily of gone back to the 6x great grandparents and worked on all of them as well. It is a consideration on my part as I have assigned 28 to their own individual day and then I have placed two on the weekends where it works otherwise I have three in one day on a weekday because the calendar doesn't have an exact number of days per month. My own lines I have rotating on an eight week basis - five to a week but I do not have nearly as many of my 4x great grandparents covered in my research!
I will be working on Bédard, Whélan, Matte, Gagnon, Mourier, Bertrand, Nepveu, Audet dit Lapointe, Grégoire, Séguin dit Ladéroute, Tremblay, Labelle, Lauzon, Brunet, Lanoie, Rhéaume, Dumoulin, Renaud, Larente dit Vinet, Cadieux, Clément, Charlebois, Pomainville, Pilon, Prévost, Desjardins, Deschatelets, Quesnel, St-Jean, Lavigne, Chénier and Racine. I am considering doing a second month which would include Patry, Fournier dit Larose, Bénoit dit Vaillacourt, Doutre, Monestier, Piché, Richer, Hémard dit Poitvin, Groux, Bernard dit Blondin, Lacroix, Thibaut, Constantineau, Boileau, Payette dit St-Amour, Sarrazin, Demers, Blais, Racicot, Lamarque dit Matthieu, Chantal, Desloges dit Poirier, Monette dit Boiseux, Creujeur (Kruger), St-Denis, Legault, D'Amour, Campeau, and Douras (Douvas). This would then take me back to the 4x great grandparents and mostly in the early 1800s/late 1700s. I have already taken his lines back to early New France and to the parents in France but I have not yet collected all the registrations. I would also like to now seek out the notary records and other records that might be at Library and Archives Canada which would give a fuller picture of these families.
I shall follow approximately the same process each day. First I will check to make sure I have all the registrations from Ancestry or the LDS website as an image in the family folder. Then within each folder I shall arrange them by generation from the emigrant. If I eventually find the registrations for these families in France then I shall simply alter the arabic to a roman numeral with the roman numerals marking the generations back from the emigrant and the parents being the I generation. I shall then check Tanguay to see if what I have also blends in with what he has (I started to use Tanguay about a year after I started). In the cases where I am still in the late 1700s, Tanguay is great to help you look at the lines going back to the emigrant. I shall also have a look at Ancestry family trees and World Connect. I will also search the Library and Archives Canada website to note items that I wish to check on my next visit.
Process:
Process:
- Label generations within the family folder
- Pull missing registrations from Ancestry and LDS website
- Check Tanguay
- Check Ancestry family trees
- Check World Connect family trees
- Search LAC for incidences of family name

Louis Matte and Josette Benoit families
Another one of my brick walls may have actually fallen with a review of the Prescott Russell County Marriage Book. I would still like to see the original records but the marriage of Léon Matte and Marie Louise Gagnon 15 Oct 1865 in Prescott County lists parents of Léon as Louis Matte and Josette Benoit and Louise as Olivier Gagnon and Lorette Doutre.
Marriage of Olivier Gagnon and Josephte Doutre I did find in the published transcription of Saint Luc at Curran (Prescott County) as 26 Jun 1844 and that has let me trace these lines back.
The marriage of Louis Matte and Josette de la Tour as she is named in the census of 1861 I had not yet located. I also found two other marriages in Prescott County in the same time interval. Louis Matte (parents Louis and Josette Benoit) married to Angélique Monette 26 Nov 1865 and François Benoit(son of André and Marie Reine Decaire) married to P Clement 25 Sep 1866 also at Prescott County.
A quick search of Tanguay did not reveal any connection (not far enough back). I searched Drouin online and found a marriage for Louis Matte and Marie Josephte Benoit dit Vaillancourt 5 Feb 1839. Parents were listed for Louis Matte and Marie Josephte. The marriage was at St Jerome. The birth of Louis Matte (son of this couple) is listed as Ste Scholastique and the birth of Léon Matte is listed as Vaudreuil. An interesting path through these villages does lead one towards Prescott County. The census of 1861 at St André lists Louis Matt and his wife Josepte De Latour with children Louis (b 1840), Nazare (b 1841), Léon (b 1844), Joseph (b 1845), Célina (b 1848), Sarrah Ann (b 1850), Noa (b 1852), Arsinne (b 1855), Julia (b 1857), and Marceline (b 1860). Noé's marriage in 1877 lists his place of birth as Carillon, Québec and his age of 26 years fits with the census (parents Louis and Josephte Matte). Marceline Matte married in 1879 and her age of 19 years fits with parents Louis Matte and Josephine Benoit (parents listed on marriage registration).
The parents of Louis Matte and Marie Josephte Benoit dit Vaillancourt married 5 Feb 1839 at St Jerome were listed as mentioned above. This couple fit well into the description of the family on the 1861 census at St André and the resulting marriages that then occur in Prescott County for their children.
Parents of Louis Matte were Augustin Matte and Angélique Daragon. They married 11 Jan 1808 at St Eustache (Augustin Mathes and Marie Judith Daragon). Their parents were listed in the marriage lines.
Parents of Josephte Benoit dit Vaillancourt were Joseph Benoit dit Vaillancourt and Josephte Charette. Still looking for their marriage.
Parents of Augustin Matte were Pierre Mathes and Marie Anne Maisonneuve. They were married 5 Jan 1773 at St Francois de Sales.
Parents of Marie Judith Daragon were Louis Darragon and Marie Jeanne Lauzon. They were married 8 Feb 1779 at Ste Genevieve (Pierrefonds).
I will post these two lines back later but they are readily found in Tanguay when the last marriage registrations are transcribed.
I appear to now be brickwalled at Joseph Benoit dit Vailancourt and Josephte Charette.

Backing up material
I decided to back up my files yesterday and was somewhat surprised to discover that I have, in the last couple of weeks of researching our son-in-law's family downloaded 4 GB of images. Certainly my file system has greatly enlarged with 84 sub-folders as compared to just eight sub-folders a couple of weeks ago. Every folder has a number of images amounting in total to 4.44 GB. I haven't reached a point where I have any text documents in any of these folders - still gathering information from ancestry.
I have a couple of lines that elude me and I expect it will be a lot of parish register reading to find the items. I will go to Library and Archives Canada one of these days to have a look at the Family Histories that have been submitted to them. For the most part I have been working on virgin territory for many of his lines back into the late 1700s. At that point I am picking up work submitted to ancestry or world connect or family webpages that have assisted me. I continue to check out each reference but there is some really good work out there on French Canadian lines.
I also want to go to the Library at Ottawa University to check out their French Canadian historical material. I am still very new to French Canadian Research and do not know all the records available to me to work on his lines. He has many many marriages in Quebec City and Montreal in the mid 1600s. He has many many soldiers in his lines. The latest I discovered the other day was Féréole Doutre who arrived in the later part of the 1750s probably in the troop increase allotment due to the Seven Years War with England in which Québec was ultimately signed over to the English in exchange for colonies in the West Indes.
Féréole married Marie Cecile Forgette dite Despatie 28 Feb 1775 at Terrebonne. Finding Marie Cecile Forgette dite Despatie proved to be a challenge but fortunately the priest recorded the parents of both in the marriage lines.
Parents of Féréole Doutre were Joseph D'Outre and Francisca Sobraques married in France.
Parents of Marie Cecile Forgette dite Despatie were Jean Baptiste Despatie dit Forgette and Marie-Anne Ménard (and this is the first record of the Ménard family in this family grouping). Jean Baptiste and Marie-Anne married 29 Oct 1738 at Ste Famille, Boucherville.
On the marriage registration of Jean Baptiste Despatie dit Forgette and Marie-Anne Ménard the priest recorded the parents of this couple and it is here that the names switched (i.e. Despatie dit Forgette).
Parents of Jean Baptiste Despatie dit Forgette were Jean Baptiste Forgette and Jeanne Beaudouin. Jean Baptiste and Jeanne married 22 Nov 1700 at Repentigny.
Again I was able to extract the names of their parents from the Parish Register.
Parents of Jean Baptiste Forgette were Nicolas Forgette dite Despatie and Marie Madeleine Martin. Nicolas and Marie Madeleine married 6 Feb 1653 at Québec City and their parents were recorded in the Parish Register.
Parents of Nicolas Forgette dite Despatie were Paul Forgette and Nicole Chevalier of Alençon France.
Parents of Marie Madeleine Martin were Abraham Martin and Marguerite Langlois who were also married in France.
This repeats some of my post of the other day but I wanted to go through it all again and I find that easier to do on my blog so that I do not lose any of the details that I have collected. I work on so many lines it is easy to misplace details if I am away from one particular line for a few days or weeks. That was my reason to start blogging although the last couple of months I have blogged less frequently, I will likely go back to my daily blog once again.
Looking at the parents of Jeanne Beaudouin who had married Jean Baptiste Despatie dit Forgette 22 Nov 1700 at Repentigny, the priest listed them as Jean Baudouyn and Charlotte Chauvin (born 5 Apr 1651 Montréal) and they married 27 Nov 1663 at Notre-Dame Montréal.
Parents of Jean Baudouyn were Jean Baudouyn and Jeanne Berthet.
Parents of Charlotte Chauvin were Michel Chauvain and Anne Archambault who had married 27 Jul 1647 at Notre-Dame, Québec. The priest had listed the names of their parents in France.
Michel Chauvain's parents were Gabriel Chauvain and Marie Arouard.
Anne Archambault's parents were Jacques Archambault and Françoise Toros.
Going back now to Marie-Anne Ménard who had married Jean Baptiste Despatie dit Forgette 29 Oct 1738 at Ste Famille Boucherville, the priest listed her parents on the marriage lines.
Parents of Marie-Anne Ménard were Louis Ménard dit Lafontaine and Marie Anne Février who married 12 Dec 1691 at Boucherville. The parents of this couple were listed on the marriage lines.
Parents of Louis Ménard dit Lafontaine were Jacques Ménard dit Lafontaine and Catherine Fovether (sp).
Parents of Marie Anne Février were Kristoffe Février and Marie Martin. I found the second marriage of Kristoffe a couple of years after the birth of Marie Anne Février 22 Jun 1676 at Boucherville. I have not yet found his first marriage with Marie Martin. This is the second Martin in this time frame Marie Madeleine Martin married Nicolas Forgette dite Despatie 6 Feb 1653 at Québec.
The Forgette family had eluded me for some time until I noticed the Despatie dit name and then I was able to quickly move back. I may attempt a look at the French records to see if I am able to learn anything about Joseph Doutre and his wife Francisca Sobraques parents of Féréole Doutre who arrived in New France towards the end of the 1750s as a soldier. He died 29 Mar 1824 at the Hopital général des Soeurs Grises in Montréal.
Again I am looking at the Olivier Gagnon line. He married Josephte Doutre (grand daughter of Féréole Doutre) 26 Jun 1844 at Saint-Luc, Curran, Prescott, Ontario. His death registration states that he was born at Berthier in 1811. I decided to have a look at the registers and found an Olivier Genton baptized there 17 May 1810 with parents Joseph Genton and Elizabeth Moreau. However Gagnon is quite aways from Genton I rather think. I shall have to continue checking. I also noted that in his burial lines the priest has mentioned that he was almost 90 years old when he was buried 13 Mar 1900. This would make the 17 May 1810 date quite interesting. But why would he change his name from Genton to Gagnon. Was it an enumerator error? Would Olivier had spoken with an accent that made Genton sound like Gagnon? Considering they would have been English speaking enumerators in the Plantagenent area this could be a possibility. However, I will keep it on the backburner whilst I hunt out other possibilities. Finding their marriage lines is a high priority since the priest would likely have been French speaking and would have spelled his surname correctly.

Doutre family
Still working on the Matte-Gagnon family, I decided to continue working on Josephte Doutre as I was having no luck at all with Olivier Gagnon.
Josephte Doutre is named Josette Doutre on the census. She was born at Plantagenet ON 5 Jan 1825 and baptized 9 Feb 1825 at Montébello (the priest duly recorded that she had been born at Plantagenet which was most helpful). Her parents were Etienne Denis Doutre and Victoire Lalonde from her baptism and the marriage which I obtained online (can not find on ancestry yet) 26 Jun 1844 at Saint Luc, Curran, Prescott County, Ontario. Although I prefer to find the marriage, finding Josephte's baptism which agrees with the online record of Etienne Doutre as her father and Victoire Lalonde as her mother I decided to find their marriage. Etienne Doutre and Victoire Lalonde were married at St Michel, Vaudreuil 4 Feb 1822. She was his second marriage.
Parents of Etienne Doutre: Féréole Doutre and Marie Cecile Forgette dite Despatie who married 28 Feb 1775 at Terrebonne. He was a soldier sent from France in the late 1750s.
Féréole Doutre parents were: Joseph Doutre and Francisca Sobraques.
Marie Cecile Forgette dite Despatie's parents were Jean Baptiste Despatie dit Forgette and Marie-Anne Ménard. They were married 29 Oct 1738 at Ste Famille, Boucherville. I continued tracing back through the Despatie dit Forgette and Ménard families.
Looking at Jean Baptiste Despatie dit Forgette and his parents were: Jean Baptiste Forgette and Jeanne Beaudouin and they married 22 Nov 1700 at Repentigny. Continuing with the Forgette dite Despatie line, the parents of Jean Baptiste were Nicolas Forgette dite Despatie and Marie Madeleine Martin who married at Québec City 6 Feb 1653. Nicolas' parents were Paul Forgette and Nicole Chevalier who married in France. Marie Madeleine Martin's parents were Abraham Martin and Marguerite Langlois and they married in France. I need to find baptisms for all of these individuals.
Then looking at Jeanne Beaudouin's parents who were: Jean Baudouyn and Charlotte Chauvin. They married the 27 Nov 1663 at Notre-Dame, Montréal. Surprisingly the baptism of Charlotte Chauvin was 5 Apr 1651 at Montréal (which would make her only 12 years old so perhaps the baptism was delayed). Her parents were Michel Chauvain and Anne Archambault who married 27 July 1647 at Québec City. Their marriage records their parents as Gabriel Chauvain and Marie Arouard and Jacques Archambault and Francoise Toros (both recorded as parishes in France). Jean Baudouyn's parents were Jean Baudouyn and Jeanne Berthet (recorded as parishes in France).
Now to try and find Olivier Gagnon's line tomorrow.

Siderfin Family and continuing French Canadian Ancestry
My new correspondent and I have been sharing information. She found a new will (new to me!) at The National Archives (London UK) which has illuminated another error in James Sanders book. Definitely John Siderfin married to Joan Adams was John the son of John Siderfin and Joan Greenslade and not the son of Robert Siderfin and Grace Kent. This makes James Sanders chart completely incorrect as he shows his great grandfather as John Siderfin married to Sarah Clark being the son of John Siderfin and Joan Greenslade. This means that my Elizabeth (Betty) Siderfin (sister to John Siderfin married to Sarah Clark) was aunt to his grandfather Robert Siderfin. That means that Elizabeth Rew (Elizabeth Siderfin's daughter) was first cousin to Robert the father of Elizabeth Siderfin (mother to James Sanders). Mind you Robert was born in 1788 and Elizabeth in 1801. Then Elizabeth (daughter of Robert was born in 1817) and William Robert (my great grandfather) wasn't born until 1837. It could be the generational differences that resulted in this loss of knowledge. Plus my family emigrated to Canada in 1850. But it is still surprising that he incorrectly selected his great great grandparents. Mind you he wrote the book in the early 1900s and his mother died in 1882 and his grandfather Robert Siderfin died in 1859. James grew up at South Molton which is quite aways from the Watchett/Selworthy homes of his Siderfin ancestor. Surprisingly my Elizabeth Rew married John Pincombe at Bishops Nympton just five miles from South Molton but the discrepancy in ages may well have resulted in the mistake. In my family, the name Siderfin was never recorded on this side of the Atlantic so that family line was completely lost.
I continued working on my son-in-law's family. I am proving the 3x great grandparents now on his grandfather's side. I have managed to pull out quite a bit of information - census, CMBs and BMDs but a few still elude me. I spent part of the morning reading the 1851 census at St-Polycarpe, Vaudreuil County but did not find the Matte (Mathieu/Matts), Gagnon (Gagné), D'Outre or De La Tour families that I had hoped to find there. There were LaTour families but not the one I needed. I still need to check the marriage registration for Léon Matte and Marie Louise Gagnon at Prescott in 1865. The Geneaogical Society has transcribed the register and listed parents as Olivier Gagnon/Josephte Beruit (census shows de LaTour) and Joseph Matte/Josephte D'Outre (census shows Louis Matte/Josette Doutre). Reading the original at the Archives of Ontario will be helpful for this marriage I suspect. Because all four families were from the Vaudreuil area originally I had hoped to discover some information on the 1851 census but they may have already been moving to the Prescott area of Ontario by then. I do not find them at Prescott so possibly somewhere in between.
Today I will enter the proofs for the 3x great grandparents of the one line and then begin to work on the maternal line back to the 3x great grandparents. Putting the trees on ancestry was very very helpful with all the searching ability of this site. I had some really good hints that were most helpful.
