Although I knew by family lore information on Elizabeth Lambden (mother of my grandfather's grandmother) mostly because she lived to be 96 years old and worked as a shepherdess until her death; I have not been able to do much more than that with the Lambden family. Her father was Nathanael Lambden and he signed the marriage register as a witness for his daughter marrying Isaac Farmer. Family Lore has it that he was a wheelwright and I have not yet pursued that line of thought to find Nathanael.

No new information for this Nathanael Lambden but I did find the burial of his son Nathaniel at Hurstbourne Tarrant 30 Jul 1817 and a baptism for a son of this Nathaniel named Nathaniel born 15 Jan and baptized 18 Jan 1795 Hurstbourne Tarrant and the son of Nathaniel and Catherine Lambden. They lived at Upper Clatford for a period of time.

Proving 4x great grandparents
I am now back to the project that I want to complete before we have our trip to Salt Lake City. I discovered I have proven Joseph Blake, Joanna King, John Coleman and I was working on Elizabeth Pearce. I discovered that Elizabeth (Pearce) Coleman had remarried in 1781 (her husband was buried in 1780 at Upper Clatford. I suspect that they lived with Dinah (Bever) Coleman and that they were involved in running an Inn although I still have to ferret out those details. The Coleman family had an Inn at Goodworth Clatford in the late 1600s and on into the 1700s but I am not sure how long they were there yet. Still working on those details! Elizabeth married John Head in 1781 at Upper Clatford. The marriage registration lists her as a widow and I finally have now found her burial registration in 1823 at Upper Clatford and she was 85 years old. This works well back to the Elizabeth Pearce baptized at Collingbourne Ducis in 1737. This is one record that I need to look at when we are in Salt Lake City. I did do some photography of this register but I was looking for Farmer entries. Elizabeth Pearce's grandmother was likely Anne Farmer and so the story may start to come together for the Farmer family which married into the Lambden family and then into the Blake family. I was trying to place Isaac Farmer in Andover but the only really good match is at Collingbourne Ducis. I completed my proof for Elizabeth Pearce but with the stipulation that I need to verify the details on her baptism and her parentage which would appear to be William Pearce and Elizabeth Hapgood. Elizabeth is from Collingbourne Ducis and the daughter of Thomas Hapgood and Anne Farmer. If I can indeed prove this line then the linkage with the Farmer family is very intriguing. Isaac Farmer was orphaned by the time he was 7 years old but he signs his marriage registration with a firm hand and well rounded letters leading one to suspect that he was educated. I related earlier my suspicions on the Farmer family so will not expand on that thought at this moment in time.
I then moved on to my Knight 4x great grandparents. This has been something I have wanted to work on for awhile. I did not do any Knight research at Salt Lake City and will do that the next time. I have a lot of information from other researchers who link this family back to the Knight family at Shaftesbury and then Cann before that. I am still sitting at William Knight (burial at Winterborne Stickland is a W Knight in 1827 and the individual is 67 years old which would work well with the records that I have for him. There are not a large number of Knight families at Stickland and I more or less know each one there. The baptism that I am looking for is at Spetisbury. At Spetisbury in 1787 we have three Knight members listed on the Militia list - William Knight bricklayer, John Knight bricklayer, John Knight, servant bricklayer (apprentice perhaps). Possibly this is John Knight son of William Knight. Eleanor though the wife of Ellis (son of William above) is the daughter of John Knight who is a bricklayer. Are they first cousins? Family lore says that they are first cousins. William Knight and Mary Dashwood at Shaftesbury (and the Knight family is not there after the 1860s when they are found at Spetisbury) had sons William, Samuel, George, John, and Thomas. Ideally I would be looking for this William to have sons William and John and indeed they do. But is this John the father of Eleanor who married Ellis the son of William. That I am still not sure about. The difference in their station continues to plague me - John was a bricklayer and William was an agricultural labourer. I need some interesting entry that relates them so that I can actually say that they are both the sons of William Knight the bricklayer. I have started entering my proofs for them. This is my grandfather Samuel Blake's line back (his 2x great grandparents). I have thus far proven four of the sixteen. I have evidence to complete John Butt, Jane Durnford, William Arnold and Elizabeth Malton. That brings me half way. I need to add to my Knight data which is four more (two Knight and one each Ellis and Vincent). The Farmer line I do have information on the likely father of Isaac and his name was John. I have no idea of his mother's name at the moment. The Lambden line I have information on Nathanael but I am not sure that the Nathanael baptized at Bradfield Berkshire is him and need to look at the other Nathaniel baptized in this time period in Berkshire. He was not baptized at St Mary Bourne. The wife of Nathanael Lambden is thus far unknown beyond the forename of Sarah and her burial in 1797 at Andover Hampshire.
Today I am having my eyes tested and more on that later. I have been meaning to upgrade my glasses for awhile but at $200 a lens I need to contemplate it for awhile! I think they need to be a little stronger perhaps in the reading portion. Although I am reading this quite well at 18 inches from the computer. We will see!
I shall dedicate another day to my grandfather's 2x great grandparents as that should permit me to add all the proofs and images to my Legacy file. Then I shall move on to my grandmother Blake's families. I will prove her "natural" parent line Cotterill (I am missing one of her 2x great grandmothers) but I want to find the grandparents of her adopted father William Taylor and perhaps beyond if I am lucky. The researcher who is doing this line has not gone beyond what I have done thus far. Perhaps she will later and she lives in England so has easier access to the registers. For her mother's line I will be able to prove those eight lines as I have collected all the evidence.
For my maternal grandfather I have the proofs for all sixteen of his 2x great grandparents. I collected all of that information (which I didn't have already) when we were at Salt Lake City last time. For my maternal grandmother I still have the problem of using family lore to connect my Ellen Taylor (her mother) back to her parents. If that connection is true then I have the proofs for five out of eight. On my grandmother's father's side I have the proofs for four out of eight. I need to work on the Cheatle lineat the 4x great grandparents but I have the fiche for that. For my Christopher Buller's parents I do not have even an inkling at this point in time. Another line to research at Salt Lake City.
That means I will work on the Pearce family at Abbotts Ann/Collingbourne Kingston, Collingbourne Ducis to find William Pearce my 5x great grandfather and his line. I will work on the Knight family to sort them out. I will work on the Farmer family at Collingbourne Ducis - I have some information on them already that I need to sort. I will work on the Lambden family in Berkshire. I will look at my paternal Grandmother's natural parentage at the 5x great grandparent level. I will seek out the family of William Taylor (her adopted father). I want to do more work on the Charley family at Kentisbear Devon. I have a few 5x great grandparents in my mother's that are known and I need to check the registers for their parents information.
I shall soon start to build my excel file for Salt Lake City. I have one created that includes the itens that I set aside last time and I will add more items to it. I know that I can look at about 40 to 50 films if I control my day very well. I am more experienced with the camera which will help and I will repeat the few pictures that are blurry and I really want to have a good copy. Quite often the ones that were blurry were not a problem for me.
I spent most of the afternoon working on the West Hampshire Tax Subsidy as I had copied about 30 pages when we were at Salt Lake city. I am producing an excel file that I can sort by surname, forename, year or place. I have a number of Hampshire ancestors who are listed in this set of records. Since I did not have eye drops I could spend the rest of the day working - a real surprise.
My new glasses will be ready in a couple of weeks and will be a change. They are not big round lenses this time but rather more of an oblong shape. I tried them out for a bit and quite liked them.
Tomorrow I will continue with the Tax Subsidy for West Hampshire.

Online and the Siderfin-Question Family
My daughter is online and it only took the technician about 20 minutes - great service.
I asked a question about the Siderfin family because of a post on the Devon list which was referring to the Blackford family of Selworthy. James Hooper Sanders in his book "The Siderfin Family of West Somerset" mentions that Robert Siderfin's wife was Elizabeth Blackford. I haven't been able to verify this at all but a post mentioned the Blackford family and I thought I would ask the question about the Blackford family and the Siderfin family.
Simultaneously I received an email from a descendant of the Short family of Minehead. Initially I thought that this was in response to my post on Devon but it was an entirely a coincidence. The Short family is mentioned in James Sanders book in relation to the Quircke family which had married into the Siderfin family of Minehead. Alice (Quircke) Siderfin in her will mentions her Short cousins. However, I had not been able to link these families to my Robert Siderfin. I have now been provided with the evidence that Elizabeth Question (daughter of Augustine Question) was the wife of Robert Siderfin and the mother of Augustine Siderfin (amongst others). I am still limited by the name of the husband of Thomasine (grandmother of Augustine Siderfin). But gradually the family is coming together and the mistakes of James' book are getting corrected. Again the will of Thomasine is mentioned in James' book but I haven't found a copy of the full text yet. She mentions son Robert and cousin Robert Siderfin of Linch. Her husband's name is Robert according to James Sander's book and born 3 August 1658 at Selworthy and baptized 23 August 1658 at Selworthy. He then has a second wife for the same Robert born/baptized 1658 at Selworthy as Elizabeth Blackford which we now know to be erroneous because of Thomasine's will which he quotes! What could make sense is that Thomasine is married to the father of Robert born/baptized 1658 at Selworthy but is this man John Siderfin born/baptized 11 Apr 1619 at Wootton Courtney and the son of Robert Siderfin and Ursula Webber who married 23 July 1612 at Luxborough Somerset? Thomasine's will is dated 2nd July 1709. All of her grandchildren are born by this date and her son Robert was born 1658 and if she was 20 - 30 when he was born would give her a birth/baptism date of 1628 - 1638. She only mentions one son so has either outlived the rest (who left no heirs) or he was her only son so perhaps she was older which would make John Siderfin born/baptized 1619 a likely husband. In 1709 her eldest grandson is 24 years old. John Siderfin's descendants are known to be John born/baptized 15 Jul 1656 at Wootton Courtney and born/baptized 1660 at Minehead. Given that the two sons are not both born/baptized at Wootton Courtney is it possible that this Robert was the middle son? The confusing item though is referring to Robert Siderfin at Linch as a cousin since this is a descendant of John Siderfin (referred to above) and would be her grandson by this argument. Still more documents to find to sort this one out!
I spent a little time putting the Question family together from the will of Augustine Question which I learned about from the email correspondent and then downloaded from The National Archives website. There are a couple more wills that will be this same family according to the Poor Law Records that I photographed at Salt Lake City. I had copied the Poor Law records for Dunster when we were at Salt Lake City and I found my Augustine Question there in 1680. I do not know when Augustine moved to Carhampton but may be able to determine this from the Poor Law. I only transcribed one set of them thus far and I have a number of years worth which I will put up on my blog when I get them transcribed.
Consequently I did not spend any more time on Dorothy Hinxman's will today but will do so tomorrow. I have commenced the transcription of the first copy in 1667.
We worked on the Schultz family this afternoon for a while. They have been an interesting study and I have learned a lot about German records along the way. My husband has now looked at the Staven and Brohm films quite closely extracting all of his Schultz and Niemann families there. The next hint takes us to Warlin and he has ordered that film and I am hoping that it comes in early next week but may take another week.
We have two films on order at the Family History Centre here and my St Mary Bourne has now come in so I will go in next week to view it. I need to film the Great Driffield for the burials from 1653 to the mid 1700s and the baptisms and marriages from 1700 to the mid 1750s. I may continue filming Great Driffield to bring me up to the 1800s and perhaps further in as well since the Sproxton family continues to live in Great Driffield into the late 1800s (and I need to look at the 1900s).
The St Mary Bourne is my Lambden family that I am still trying to sort out. I ordered the Bradfield film (Berkshire) and could not conclude anything about the Nathanael Lambden baptized there at an appropriate time so I will now look at the Lambden family of St Mary Bourne who are found later at Andover. The IGI does not list a Nathanael there. This will be an interesting study as well. My 4x great grandmother Elizabeth Lambden Farmer was baptized in 1768 and died in 1862, My grandfather used to talk about his great grandmother who was nearly 100 when she died. He was born in 1875 so just 13 years after she died. His grandmother Farmer (her daughter) lived to be 89 and was well known to my grandfather and he learned a lot about his Farmer family from her but not enough to help me find Isaac Farmer (father of Ann Farmer Blake). Ann was only four years old when her father died so may not have known her Farmer relatives very well.
Tomorrow I shall continue transcribing Dorothy Hinxman's will and take a peak at the Dunster Poor Law Records.
I asked a question about the Siderfin family because of a post on the Devon list which was referring to the Blackford family of Selworthy. James Hooper Sanders in his book "The Siderfin Family of West Somerset" mentions that Robert Siderfin's wife was Elizabeth Blackford. I haven't been able to verify this at all but a post mentioned the Blackford family and I thought I would ask the question about the Blackford family and the Siderfin family.
Simultaneously I received an email from a descendant of the Short family of Minehead. Initially I thought that this was in response to my post on Devon but it was an entirely a coincidence. The Short family is mentioned in James Sanders book in relation to the Quircke family which had married into the Siderfin family of Minehead. Alice (Quircke) Siderfin in her will mentions her Short cousins. However, I had not been able to link these families to my Robert Siderfin. I have now been provided with the evidence that Elizabeth Question (daughter of Augustine Question) was the wife of Robert Siderfin and the mother of Augustine Siderfin (amongst others). I am still limited by the name of the husband of Thomasine (grandmother of Augustine Siderfin). But gradually the family is coming together and the mistakes of James' book are getting corrected. Again the will of Thomasine is mentioned in James' book but I haven't found a copy of the full text yet. She mentions son Robert and cousin Robert Siderfin of Linch. Her husband's name is Robert according to James Sander's book and born 3 August 1658 at Selworthy and baptized 23 August 1658 at Selworthy. He then has a second wife for the same Robert born/baptized 1658 at Selworthy as Elizabeth Blackford which we now know to be erroneous because of Thomasine's will which he quotes! What could make sense is that Thomasine is married to the father of Robert born/baptized 1658 at Selworthy but is this man John Siderfin born/baptized 11 Apr 1619 at Wootton Courtney and the son of Robert Siderfin and Ursula Webber who married 23 July 1612 at Luxborough Somerset? Thomasine's will is dated 2nd July 1709. All of her grandchildren are born by this date and her son Robert was born 1658 and if she was 20 - 30 when he was born would give her a birth/baptism date of 1628 - 1638. She only mentions one son so has either outlived the rest (who left no heirs) or he was her only son so perhaps she was older which would make John Siderfin born/baptized 1619 a likely husband. In 1709 her eldest grandson is 24 years old. John Siderfin's descendants are known to be John born/baptized 15 Jul 1656 at Wootton Courtney and born/baptized 1660 at Minehead. Given that the two sons are not both born/baptized at Wootton Courtney is it possible that this Robert was the middle son? The confusing item though is referring to Robert Siderfin at Linch as a cousin since this is a descendant of John Siderfin (referred to above) and would be her grandson by this argument. Still more documents to find to sort this one out!
I spent a little time putting the Question family together from the will of Augustine Question which I learned about from the email correspondent and then downloaded from The National Archives website. There are a couple more wills that will be this same family according to the Poor Law Records that I photographed at Salt Lake City. I had copied the Poor Law records for Dunster when we were at Salt Lake City and I found my Augustine Question there in 1680. I do not know when Augustine moved to Carhampton but may be able to determine this from the Poor Law. I only transcribed one set of them thus far and I have a number of years worth which I will put up on my blog when I get them transcribed.
Consequently I did not spend any more time on Dorothy Hinxman's will today but will do so tomorrow. I have commenced the transcription of the first copy in 1667.
We worked on the Schultz family this afternoon for a while. They have been an interesting study and I have learned a lot about German records along the way. My husband has now looked at the Staven and Brohm films quite closely extracting all of his Schultz and Niemann families there. The next hint takes us to Warlin and he has ordered that film and I am hoping that it comes in early next week but may take another week.
We have two films on order at the Family History Centre here and my St Mary Bourne has now come in so I will go in next week to view it. I need to film the Great Driffield for the burials from 1653 to the mid 1700s and the baptisms and marriages from 1700 to the mid 1750s. I may continue filming Great Driffield to bring me up to the 1800s and perhaps further in as well since the Sproxton family continues to live in Great Driffield into the late 1800s (and I need to look at the 1900s).
The St Mary Bourne is my Lambden family that I am still trying to sort out. I ordered the Bradfield film (Berkshire) and could not conclude anything about the Nathanael Lambden baptized there at an appropriate time so I will now look at the Lambden family of St Mary Bourne who are found later at Andover. The IGI does not list a Nathanael there. This will be an interesting study as well. Hinxman Wills - 15 August 2009
I tackled the most difficult of the Hinxman wills that I received to transcribe first. It is certainly a challenge although it is helpful that he is quite repetitive in his bequests to his children. I believe I have all the children now and this was a large family: William (eldest son it would appear), Joseph, Christopher and John are the sons and Elizabeth, Jane, Joane, and Joyes are the daughters. Kinsman/kinswoman are Andrew Henxman and Joane Hinxman and possibly Edward Henxman. A number of friends are listed as well. William appears to be fairly comfortable as he has a lot of household possessions. None of his children appear to be married. Very little money is mentioned nor property. It is more than 59 lines in length. I have done a first run through of page 1 and have text in the first 32 lines. It will likely be slow going but I shall send it off to a fellow researcher towards the end of the week as a rough draft.
I will leave the will for a while now and continue entering in my Sproxton data in case the next films come in more quickly than anticipated. I await Great Driffield and St Mary Bourne. The St Mary Bourne will be an easy read (I think!) because it is a typewritten transcription of the register. I shall extract all of the Lambden entries back as far as they go in the document. That way I will have it at hand in case Nathanael is actually a descendant of this Lambden family that quite early arrives in the St Mary Bourne area possibly from Berkshire where the Lambden family is most commonly found in the 1500s and early 1600s. The Great Driffield will be quite exciting when it arrives as it will have information on the Harland family. Ann Harland (my 5x great grandmother) married Richard Sproxton 24 Jun 1753 at Great Driffield. She was the youngest child of Timothy Harland and his wife Anne Wilkinson - marriage extraction on IGI). I have not yet been able to determine baptismal information for either of these two people although there was a Harland family at Great Driffield. Timothy Harland married Ann Wilkinson 24 Jun 1723 at Great Driffield.
I returned to working on the Hinxman will and made a couple of good breakthroughs with the text. It is moving along and I hope to finish it by the end of next week.

Sproxton - Interesting puzzle
Examining the images further for Richard Sproxton and the marriages has given me further details. Grace Sarum married Marmaduke Wiles in 1703 and Marmaduke was buried in 1719 leaving her a widow. Richard Sproxton married Grace Wiles in 1720. The priest does not note that she is a widow unfortunately but the earlier priest had added Richard Sproxton junior to the marriage of Richard Sproxton and Dorothy English adding further proof to the marriage being the correct one and Richard Sproxton's parents being Richard Sproxton and Dorothy English. I haven't been able to discover anything about Dorothy English but will cotinue checking into that family line.
I continued working with the John Sproxton line (although not mine I decided I might as well figure it out for the 1600s and early 1700s). The use of senior, junior and younger is helpful and I was able to separate all the families and put them into legacy under the appropriate parent. The John line is a much larger one in the early 1700s and is the line that remains at Hutton Cranswick into the early 1800s. The Richard line moves to Great Driffield where my Richard marries Ann Harland and when the Great Driffield film arrives I will be able to sort them out I am hoping.
We went for a two hour canoe ride in the bayou of the Ottawa River which is around Petrie Island. It is a most pleasant canoe ride and with three of us paddling we were able to traverse quite a distance in the two hours. We had marvelous views of yellow and white water lillies. We will try to get out again for a few more rides before the summer is past. No time for a bike ride these past few days with all the film viewing. I will just do one more day on Hutton Cranswick and also looking at Watton, Skerne and Beswick. I want to have a fresh eye to look at Watton and Beswick as I think that there may be a few entries there that might interest me. The Skern registers are badly damaged and I did not really see anything that would be helpful.
We are into the first really warm spell of the summer but you can tell that the cooler days are soon to come as the evenings cool off quite quickly. This is the coolest summer that I can remember for awhile. In some ways it is nice but the ripening is slower in the garden. So although our tomatoes are quite lovely they are still very green.
No time spent on the will today but I shall get back to it once I have finished with the Hutton Cranswick film. The Great Driffield film will be awhile as it had to be created from the master copy and it is possible that St Mary Bourne film will come first. It is a transcription and if it doesn't help me then I will buy the fiche for the parish registers from the Hampshire Record Office.

Hinxman Wills
My husband had a meeting in Morrisburg today so I drove along with him and took a Hinxman will with me that I am transcribing. It will be a challenge as it is from 1579. I set up my template and captured the phrases that I recognized quickly. I like to transcribe on the computer and this I was doing from a paper copy. It was a good start and I am starting to become familiar with the writing.
I continued looking at Sproxton and heard back from one of the people who has Sproxton at both GeneTree and Ancestry. She mentioned that the furtherest back John Sproxton was married to Ann Simpson so I checked out my images and discovered that John Sproxton junior married Ann Simpson 6 Jan 1659 and the marriage that I found between John Sproxton and Anne Huser was perhaps his father marrying a second time although I need to go back to the register and have another look. This is very near the beginning of the register so may not be able to solve that. But in the meantime I can not quite make out the parish for Ann Simpson so will check that out on Tuesday to see if I can read it on the original.
Tomorrow I will continue listing all the images that I have made thus far and the records that I should be able to find on the Hutton Cranswick film. Then I shall be ready on Tuesday to continue working on the film. I haven't heard yet if Great Driffield is in but perhaps later this week or early next week. I am also going to order St Mary Bourne Hampshire film in as my husband has another one to order in for his German ancestors. He has done very well with his film and found his great grandmother quite readily and has traced her back to her grandparents. A very good research time for his microfilm. I have also found quite a bit so am very pleased. Too bad that the film only goes back to 1653 as it would be interesting to see if I could trace John Sproxton back to Wakefield Yorkshire.
