Will of Margaret Munday, Monxton, Hampshire - Family Search Film 186697, Catalogue C-1268, number 52, probated 13 Feb 1558/59
The will of Margaret Mundaye, widow of Richard Munday whose will was blogged yesterday and also the widow of Nicholas Blake whose will was probated a while ago. Links to both wills follow:
http://kippeeb.blogspot.ca/2014/03/will-of-richard-munday-monxton.html
http://kippeeb.blogspot.ca/2012/09/will-of-nicholas-blake-national.html
Normally I would not have blogged a will that I know to be missing one page but this will is in itself very interesting. The spelling is very novel in this will and I will attempt to acquire the other page at some point. It could be that it is missing on the film at the Family History Library and I need to order from the Hampshire Record Office. I have a few that I want to acquire and was thinking that Mother’s Day is coming and I could perhaps do another batch as my children are always asking me what I would like.
Margaret remembers her son William’s children with 18 sheep and Edmund’s child Steven with just 2 sheep. I am left to wonder did William have 9 children and indeed in his will he mentions ten children which may give me an idea that his last child Richard (my likely ancestor) was born after February of 1558 which does rather match my thinking. He is married likely by 1583 to 84 which would make him about 23 to 25 years of age at the time. So that was an exciting find in this will if I have correctly interpreted Margaret (my likely 12 x great grandmother). Still no ideas on her maiden name and it would be interesting to find that actually.
What has always troubled me is that William never named one of his children Nicholas at least none is known to have been named Nicholas. But William’s son William named one of his son’s Nicholas. But of course it is impossible to know if there were children named Nicholas who died.
This will also clarifies why William ends up with all the properties of his father Nicholas mentioned in the will of Nicholas. Evidently Edmund did not clear his debts with William Mondy and his brother William so he forfeited all the properties and cattle left to him by his father. I guess 200 pounds was more interesting. I never see anything of Edmund again except the mention of him in his brother William’s will so he is still living in 1582. Nothing about Edmund’s son Steven mentioned in this will of his mother. This is 11 years after the will of Nicholas and Edmund is obviously an adult and has married. The page that is missing must talk about Elizabeth and perhaps I will learn which Mondy she married if she was married by the time of her mother’s death. Her brother William mentions Elizabeth Monday in his will of 1582.

Will of Richard Munday, Monxton, Hampshire - Family Search Film 186879, catalogue H-892, number 6, probated 29 Aug 1551
It seemed logical at this point to transcribe the will of Richard Munday who married the widow Margaret Blake after the death of her husband Nicholas Blake in 1547. Nicholas being the brother of Robert Blake and both thought to be the sons of Richard and Jone Blake (Richard leaving his will in 1522 and Jone leaving her will in 1527).
I have been concentrating on the Robert Blake line (brother of Nicholas) but in order to keep current timewise I need to bring in the few items on the Nicholas Blake line (my line by all appearances).
In his will Richard mentions Margaret’s deceased husband Nicholas Blake, Edmund youngest son of Nicholas and Margaret and Elizabeth unmarried daughter of Nicholas and Margaret. The only other children of Nicholas and Margaret were William and Ann (married to Godfrey) but not mentioned in Richard Munday's will. What is not known is whether or not Nicholas was married twice with William and Ann being older siblings of Edmund and Elizabeth although their older brother William does remember all of them in his will of 1582 without differentiating (blogged):
http://kippeeb.blogspot.ca/2012/09/will-of-william-blakeyeoman-of-andover.html
I also have part of the will of Margaret Munday but the second page of the will proper is missing. I shall order that one from the Hampshire Record Office with my next batch that I want to order but will publish what is available and add the remainder later if it is available.
For completeness in the analysis, Richard identifies his sons as William (executor), John, and Richard, and daughters Jone, Anys, and Elysabeth.

Will of Elizabeth Blake, wife of Long Parish, Hampshire - The National Archives PROB 11/307/513, probated 3 Apr 1662
Elizabeth Blake is married to Nicholas Blake of Long Parish and it is possible that her maiden name was Sadler.
This will was in litigation C 6/21/94 (document at The National Archives) and is Kent versus Thomas with the plaintiff Richard Kent and the defendants Nicholas Thomas and other. This is the answer only to that litigation and it is dated 1662.
A second litigation C 6/48/53 (document at The National Archives) and is Goddard versus Kent with plaintiffs Katherine Goddard, Jane Goddard and Elizabeth Goddard and defendants (unknown) Smithe, Richard Kent, Nicholas Thomas, Mary Thomas wife of Nicholas and again the will of the deceased Elizabeth Blake. The document type is the bill and two answers and is dated 1664.
A third litigation C 6/48/99 (document at The National Archives) and is Pembridge versus Thomas with plaintiffs Jane Pembridge, Elizabeth Pembridge and Mary Pembridge with defendants Nicholas Thomas, Mary Thomas his wife and Richard Kent. The document type is answer and schedule. The date is 1651-1681 but would be at least 1662 – 1681 so is probably part of a larger package with these dates.
In an earlier will Richard Blake of Tower Ward London mentioned his godson Richard Blake of Long Parish (1643) and was blogged:
http://kippeeb.blogspot.ca/2011/02/richard-blake-will-of-23-mar-1643.html
Is this Nicholas Blake a son of Richard and Jone Blake of Andover. Richard died in 1622 and left his will in which he mentions property at Forton which he is giving to his son Nicholas. Forton is one of the townships in Longparish. This would mean that he is the Nicholas Blake baptized 27 Mar 1604 at Andover and buried at Andover 16 Mar 1677. I have not to date found a marriage for him but do not have the parish registers for Long Parish yet.
http://kippeeb.blogspot.ca/2013/08/will-of-richard-blake-linen-draper-of.html
The sister of Nicholas Blake, Elinor Hinxman, mentioned her brother in her will of 1657 and he was living at Gavelacre which is in the vill of Forton thus placing him again in this area close to the time of the will of 1662. I have not published the Hinxman wills so must do that one of these days “…..And I nominate, and appoint my brother Mr Nicholas Blake of Galliger and my cozen Mr Peter Blake of Andover Overseers of this my last Will and Testament desiring them to be ayding and assisting to my Executor in the performance hereof ….”
British History Online has a write up for Richard Blake’s holding of property at Gavelacre in Forton:
http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.aspx?compid=56843
Richard Blake, who died in 1623[sic 1622], held a messuage called 'Chamberlaynes hold,' and others there, of Cecily Lady De La Warr as of her manor of Wherwell (fn. 42) ; and premises in Forton are repeatedly mentioned in the later conveyances of Longparish Manor. There is a lot of information on Nicholas Blake of Gavelacre which will be mentioned as I have a few indentures that refer to him. To date though, I have not yet found a will for him. There are a number of documents in which he is involved as trustee and grantee but no will thus far. The will could be attached to property that preceded directly to his right heir so no probate but there should be an entry showing the passage of the property from him to his heir or if he sold it. I do not have any children for Nicholas. Learning more about Nicholas could be helpful for my personal research as it is his nephew William to whom he first mortgaged property at Andover and later for a particular sum of 5 shillings cleared the mortgage of 50+ pounds in 1649. This was at East Field and West Field. William himself died in 1696 also not leaving a will.
This is an excellent will to learn about the family of Elizabeth Blake as she names her siblings and the children of her siblings.
Names mentioned in the will:
Mr Nicholas Blake, husband of the testatrix, Long Parish
Anthony Pembridge, great nephew
Jane Pembridge, great niece
Mary Pembridge, great niece
Elizabeth Pembridge, great niece
Mary Pembridge, niece
Edward Kent, great nephew
Richard Kent, great nephew
John Kent, great nephew
Joane Kent, great niece
Elizabeth Kent, great niece
Richard Kent, nephew, executor
Michaell Goddard, great nephew
Katherine Goddard, great niece
Jane Goddard, great niece
Elizabeth Goddard, great niece
Katherine Goddard, niece
Charitie Thomas, goddaughter
Mr Nicholas Thomas, kinsman
Samuel Collins
William Sadler, brother
Robert Sadler, brother
Anthony Pembridge, cousin (is this the husband of her niece Mary?)
Robert Goddard, cousin (is this the husband of her niece Katherine?)
Richard Kent, cousin (same as executor, husband of unnamed niece?)
Richard Miller, cousin
Anne Sadler, cousin (child of her brother?)
Joane Sadler, cousin (child of her brother?)
William Sadler, cousin (child of her brother?)
Martha Hopkins
John Hayes, clerk, witness
Elizabeth Gale, witness
Interesting that she has chosen the Church at Nether Wallop in which to be buried. An interesting set of wills for the Gore family of Nether Wallop which mentions “my brother in law Mr Robert Sadler” and was written 22 Jan 1655 and proved 29 Mar 1656.
http://genforum.genealogy.com/gore/messages/1757.html
There is apparently a pedigree for the Sadler family on page 163 in the Visitation of Wiltshire 1623. The children of Robert Sadler of Salthorp (sic Salthrop), Wiltshire married to Grace the daughter of Henry Sadler son of Radulphi Sadler, knight, are listed as Robert Sadler son and heir aged 15 years in 1623, Henry aged 13 years in 1623, William aged 12 years in 1623, Elizabeth aged 11 years in 1623 and Anna aged 10 years in 1623. If indeed this is Elizabeth’s family, then Elizabeth would have been born circa 1612 and 50 years of age when her will was written. She does not mention her sister Anna or brother Henry but does mention her brothers Robert and William. Salthorp is near Everleigh/Everley Wiltshire which is 5 miles north west of Ludgershall and the road from Andover passes through Everleigh. Queen Elizabeth gave the manor to Sir Ralph Sadler. Ralph is the grandfather of Grace who was the likely mother of Elizabeth wife of Nicholas Blake. Nether Wallop is thirteen miles from Everleigh and ten miles from Longparish.
My daughter has speeded up the publication of this blog as she helped me to find Salthrop.

Joane Kent, great niece
Elizabeth Kent, great niece

Anne Sadler, cousin (child of her brother?)
Joane Sadler, cousin (child of her brother?)

Will of Thomas Blake, Fellmonger, Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire - The National Archives PROB 11/901/452, probated 10 Sep 1764
There is only this one PCC will in Bedfordshire for Blake in the PCC. I do
now notice that there are six wills at the Archives for the
Bleak/Bleek/Bleake family and must look into acquiring those but none
are for Bedfordshire. The next set of wills will be from Berkshire and
there are seven in total. I am missing one will there for Mary Blake widow, 1802 so will add that to my list for our next trip to Kew sometime in the future.
Thomas Blake, fellmonger of Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire, is the testator. He is married to Constance and has/had sons John and George.
The baptism of George (only living child named in the will) was 21 Jul 1751 at Leighton Buzzard with parents Thomas and Constance Blake. George would have been only 13 years of age when his father died. Other children born to this couple and baptized at Leighton Buzzard include (from family search)
Mary Bleake baptized 14 Mar 1736
John Bleake baptized 23 Jun 1737
Elizabeth Blakes baptized 27 Aug 1741
Mary Blake baptized 29 Jan 1743
Thomas Blake baptized 17 Dec 1744
William Blake baptized 9 Sep 1747
with George being the youngest. John has recently died according to the will but he does not mention the other five children.
LDS also has an Alice Blike baptized 25 Oct 1569 at Leighton Buzzard with parent Thomas Blike.
There is a marriage of Tho. Bleak to Constance George 26 Nov 1735 at Leighton Buzzard (Family Search M00360-1)).
At the Bedfordshire Record Office there is a Pedigree of the Bleake family (rough pencil) Reference: HW99/3 and further there are Notes on Blake (or Bleake) family Reference HW99/4.
There are 785 results for Blake in the archival catalogue at the Bedfordshire and Luton Archives Service. Their search engine is malfunctioning so could not bring that down to a time period but will check back later. But a quick look at results shows an Alexander Blake at Peterborough in the 1650s. There are a number of Blake entries through to the present day in this particular archive.
