1.    Pincombe Charts, original One-Name Study at the Guild of One-Name Studies

These Pincombe Charts were created by the two researchers in the original One-name-study at the Guild of one-name-studies. I reprint them with the thought in mind that others could add to the knowledge of these charts. I have reworked some of them and will publish that information when complete. I am republishing the North and South Molton chart as it is referred to in the Will of John Pincombe of South Molton.

http://www.kipp-blake-families.ca/Chart1-2.jpg

These tables represent many years of work at the record offices and Richard Pinkham was a physician and able to make contact with some of the Pincombe families living in Devon. The names seen on these charts usually in the top corners are individuals who provided information for that particular chart. I do remind other researchers that there are discrepancies in these charts and I would appreciate knowing of any that you may find so that eventually a corrected chart will be published.

John Pincombe in this will names his wife as Amie Pincombe, his son as John Pincombe and that his father is still living. He says that he is a merchant at South Molton, Devon.

The North Molton and South Molton chart produced by the original researchers at the Guild of one name study has been published in Pincombe-Pinkham newsletter Volume 1 Issue 4: http://kippeeb.blogspot.ca/2016/09/pincombe-pinkham-newsletter-volume-1.html
And republished in this issue. The link for this particular chart since it is impossible to actually read the chart from the newsletter: http://www.kipp-blake-families.ca/Chart1-2.jpg

This chart names this particular John Pyncombe as the husband of Amy Dodridge. It gives a year of birth for John Pyncombe of 1575 and that they have a son John Pincombe born circa 1596 and that he was buried circa 1665 and had married Mary Carew. It also names his sister as Helen baptized 29 Mar 1577 at Chittle Hampton and that the father of these children was Richard Pincombe who married circa 1574. He in turned being named as a son of John Pincombe born circa 1526 at South Molton and again being the son of a John Pincombe born circa 1501 at South Molton with a brother Christopher also born at South Molton. Both of these children are named as the sons of John Pyncombe. This John Pyncombe is said to have a brother Thomas Pyncombe born circa 1481 who lived at North Molton and Filleigh and was the father of William Pyncombe born circa 1506 and married to (unknown) Snowe (lived at East Buckland and North Molton). Both of these children named as son of an (unknown) Pyncombe who lived at North Molton. I would only mention that the Thomas Pyncombe who lived at North Molton and Filleigh is presumed to be my ancestor and has been discussed earlier so will leave any discussion on this individual to another time.

Returning to the testator, John Pincombe and I would mention that I have not been able to find his will online at the Record Office. I downloaded it in 2006 and probably have not looked for it online anytime since then.

Do I agree with the line that is given to the testator? If I look at the tax records for Pincombe/Pencombe/Pyncombe in the 1500s I discover the following:

The Tax Rolls for Devon 1544-1545 have 9 Pencombe/Pincombe/Pinkcombe/Pynkeham listings including

Alice (widow of Thomas) Pencombe North Molton Parish £5
Christopher Pyncombe South Molton Parish £10
John Pencombe North Molton Parish £4
John Pyncombe South Molton Parish £13
Philip Pynkeham Tawstock Parish £8
Richard Pencombe Bedeford Parish £5
Richard Pencombe Kings Nympton Parish £1
Thomas Pencomb Estbuclond Parish (East Buckland) £9
William Pencombe North Molton Parish £6

This does not  yield the expected Richard Pincombe as found by the earlier researchers at South Molton with son John Pincombe (grandson John Pincombe) and daughter Helen Pincombe. The only two Richard Pincombes are at Bideford and Kings Nympton. At South Molton there is a John Pyncombe and a Christopher Pyncombe. As I reconstructed the family tree I suggest that John and Christopher are brothers (and more discussion on the other Pincombe families found in the taxes another time.

The Tax Subsidy for 1581 lists 12 Pincombe heads including

Annis Pincombe (widow) Alwington Parish £4
Christopher Pincombe South Molton Parish £4
Edward Pencombe Tawstocke Parish £5
Emma Pyncombe (widow) North Molton Parish £3
John Pincombe South Molton Parish £4
John Pincombe (senior) South Molton Parish £12
John Pincomb (Esquire) Broadwood Kelleigh Parish £9
Richard Pincombe Bideford Parish £6
Richard Pincombe Yearnescombe Parish £3
Richard Pincombe Abbotsham Parish £8
William Pencombe East Buckland Parish £10
___therin Pincombe (widow) Bideford Parish £2

By 1581 (almost fourty years later) one finds at South Molton a Christopher Pincombe, a John Pincombe and a John Pincombe (senior). John Pincombe senior holds three times as much wealth as the other two Pincombes named. At this point I have made the assumption that John Pincombe (senior) was perhaps the John Pincombe found on the 1543-44 subsidy. Are John and Christopher both his sons or are they Christopher’s sons or each of these earlier men has left a son each. The wealth does tend to make one wonder if both are the sons of Christopher perhaps now deceased. But it is interesting that there is not a Richard Pincombe holding land at South Molton in 1543-44 or 1581.

Who is the testator? He is likely part of the Pincombe family that descends from the earlier Pincombe at North Molton. One can conclude that given the proximity. He has property at George Nympton and that particular parish in 1581 has few entries paying subsidy: Philip Dobbe, Richard Greade, Richard Colman, Philip Beare, Agnes Harrys (widow), Mary Pearce (widow) and Philip Bennet. But this is another 12 years hence so one can  not be positive about such a statement being true in 1593.

From the Devon Visitations of 1620, the following can be gleaned:

An Unknown Pyncombe (living at Northmolton) had come with the Lord Zouch about the beginning of the reign of Henry VII (1485) and that he married and had three sons Thomas (lived at Filleigh and later East Buckland), John and an (unknown) Pyncombe. Looking only at John Pyncombe the chart shows that he had sons John Pyncombe and Christopher Pyncombe both of Southmolton and each of them had a son John. That John Pyncombe (great nephew to Christopher Pyncombe) married Amy daughter of Richard Doddridge. John and Amy had a son John Pyncombe who lived at Southmolton and was a student in the Middle Temple, London and was living in 1620.

The Visitation is generally thought to be accurate and this particular one was signed by William Pyncombe of Southmolton and East Buckland who had married Temperance Pollard. William was a Coroner in the County of Devon.

Given the information from the taxes and the Visitation the present testator would appear to be John Pyncombe son of John Pyncombe. Since the time frame on this chart is completed in 1620 and John the last mentioned Pyncombe in this line was a student in the Middle Temple and by his father’s will alive in 1593 then he was born by 1593 although could be earlier but 27 is a reasonable age to be a student of the Middle Temple. That would give a birth year approximately to his father of 1560 to early 1570s although could be earlier. Then his father John would be born circa 1540s to 1550s and that could also be earlier. That John is known to be the son of John Pyncombe whose father came to Northmolton in 1485. His possible year of birth then 1510 to 1520 but could have been earlier. That giving a year of birth to the son of the unknown Pyncombe arriving 1485 or later of 1490 to 1500 or earlier. This fits into a nice pattern and does match the Visitation and reasonable years of birth. In the 1540s tax subsidy there was a Christopher Pyncombe and a John Pyncombe in South Molton. These men would need to be at least 21 years of age at that time which would have one looking at the grandsons of the unknown Pyncombe arriving in 1485 or later and the sons of the same Pyncombe. I have opted to think that the men on the tax subsidy are the grandsons. Plus Alice (widow of Thomas Pencombe) is living in 1544 and perhaps she points to the name of the founder of the Pencombe family of North Molton as being Thomas. It is known he had a son Thomas who better fits into being the husband of Johane Pencombe whose will was blogged in Volume 1, Issue 1.

The Dodderidge family members mentioned in the will Pentecost, John, Joane and Dorothy were all siblings of his wife Amy Dodderidge Pincombe.

More later on this line of the family but the ancestral line I believe of this John Pincombe, the testator has now been established.

3.    Autosomal DNA Study

The entire Pincombe DNA study at FT DNA includes 19 members of whom 12 have taken the Family Finder Test.

I continue to have matches that have proven to be most interesting in my Pincombe family line but primarily these new matches are in the line of the wife of my 2x great grandfather John Pincombe (emigrated to Canada in 1850/51).

I am still not yet ready to discuss the yDNA Pincombe-Pinkham family study.

Pincombe images from John Rylands University Library at the University of Lancashire

My two images have come quickly from the John Rylands University in Lancashire UK and I am very pleased with the result. I looked up John Rylands on wikipedia with the following resultant information gleaned:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Rylands

"John Rylands (7 February 1801 – 11 December 1888) was an English entrepreneur, and philanthropist. He was the owner of the largest textile manufacturing concern in the United Kingdom, and Manchester's first multi-millionaire.

"After having learned to weave Rylands became a small-scale manufacturer of hand-looms, while also working in the draper's shop his father had opened in St Helens. He displayed a "precocious shrewdness" for retailing,[1] and in partnership with his two older brothers expanded into the wholesale trade. So successful were they that in 1819 Rylands' father merged his retail business with theirs, creating the firm of Rylands & Sons.[1] At its peak, the company employed a workforce of 15,000 in 17 mills and factories, producing 35 tons of cloth a day."

There is a much longer writeup on John Rylands in the article, I have quoted the lead paragraphs only.

The two images were of the Pincombe family at South Molton:

Contents:
Co. DEVON.
An extent of all the manors, etc. of the late John Pincombe, gentleman,
inherited by his son and heir, John Pincombe the younger; taken at South
Molton, co. Devon, Parchment roll. Seal missing.

I have been trying to place the lines of this family in a correct historical timeline. There are four John Pincombe's in this line with the first being the son of the first Pincombe member at North Molton who arrived with Lord Zouch in 1485 according to the Visitation of Devon 1620 (original). This John Pincombe was likely born in the early 1500s and had died by 1571 at South Molton. According to the original Visitation of Devon 1620 he had two sons John and Christopher who both lived at South Molton. It is possible that the wife of this first John Pincombe was of the Dodderidge family. Her brother John was the father of Richard Dodderidge and his daughter Amy married the grandson of the first John Pincombe. However, I am still proving that line.

The document has a preamble which states that John Pincombe senior (this is the son of the first John Pincombe) died 18 Dec 1604 at South Molton at which time his son John was still alive. However in the time between death and probate John Pincombe junior also living at South Molton and married to Amy Dodderidge 17 Nov 1578 at Barnstaple has died with probate 13 Apr 1605. Hence the heir at law became the son of John Pincombe and Amy Dodderidge and this was again John Pincombe (a minor by the terms of the will) who was born 11 Feb 1584 at Barnstaple and he married Mary Carew. These two are the parents of Gertrude Pincombe who left the Pincombe Trust which included the properties listed on this "Extent of Manors" which was prepared to be attached to the Probate.

This now clarifies the descent of the Pincombe family in this line and with the son of John Pincombe and Mary Carew dying without heirs, the line became extinct in the Pincombe family. This was the armigerous line of the Pincombe family. Since the Coat of Arms was awarded in 1616 it must have been to John Pincombe married to Mary Carew but there does appear to be a discrepancy in that regard as the Coat of Arms appears to have been awarded in 1598 as well. Perhaps the original awarding was to John Pincombe as High Sheriff of South Molton (John Pincombe senior) and then in 1616 his grandson John applied to renew the Coat of Arms to himself and as the eldest and heir apparent of his grandfather he would inherit the right to bear the Coat of Arms bourne by his grandfather.

I shall transcribe the information at a later date but I am now satisfied that this line is correct although there is no mention of Christopher's line which was shown to be extinct on the charts of the earlier Pincombe study. Christopher himself had died by 1585 at South Molton but he appears to have left two sons John and William. William does appear to have an extended family which appears to be later found at Bideford. Only yDNA can really answer the lines of the Pincombe family found around the North Devon area and later much further afield.

Visitation of Devon 1564, 1620 and 1620 with additions

The Visitations of Devon in 1564 and 1620 can be found online. The page for Pincombe from Visitation of Devon for 1620 with additions I have also now found it online at Family History Archive. I have never found the Pincombe/Pyncombe/Pencombe family in the 1564 Visitation which lends credence to the idea that they became "known" because of the marriages that they made in the late 1500s and early 1600s namely, William Pincombe at East Buckland marrying Temperance Pollard (grandaughter of Sir Lewis Pollard (Judge)) and John Pincombe of Southmolton marrying Amy Doddridge (nephew was Judge Doddridge).

I have mostly been paying attention to the 1620 with additions Visitation and and failed to note that the original 1620 Visitation has the sons of the first Pincombe at North Molton in 1485 as Thomas, John and forename unknown. I wonder if there is an error in the revised 1620 Visitation with additions. The children if any of the unknown Pincombe are not listed and most interesting John and Christopher Pincombe of Southmolton are both listed as sons of John rather than having two John Pincombes with each having one son namely John with John and John with Christopher which is how the Revised Visitation reads.

There is a plus and minus to this relook at the original 1620 Visitation. I still have this gap of years and a more positive note that John and Thomas were indeed brothers and not half-siblings. It would be interesting if the wife of the first John Pincombe could be found. Was the third son William? Since these Visitations are in the public domain I shall place a copy in this blog as images.

1620 Visitation (original)

The 1620 Visitation with additions has the change in the first generation sons:

1620 Visitation (Family History Archive)

The original 1620 Visitation certainly puts a different focus on the Pincombe family with respect to the first Pincombe at North Molton. Could one conclude that there was only one John Pincombe brother to Thomas in the second generation? Finding the names of the wives of John and Thomas and the unknown sibling would be a great next step in looking at this family in the early 1500s. (The will of Johane Pencombe does appear to make her the wife of Thomas.) There is always the possibility that the first Pincombe at North Molton came as a young page with Lord Zouch. That is a thought that has recently crossed my mind. He could be a young lad of ten or twelve years of age which would make the time frame more reasonable with respect to the time at which his children were born and likely married. Although I have looked at the original 1620 Visitation several times in the past it shows how you can miss items the first time through. I got into the habit of using the 1620 with additions because I had it as an *.pdf. I have now downloaded the two pages of the original 1620 as images.

While I have the family history archive site open looking at the original 1620 Visitation I shall check out some of my other Devon lines.Although this revised 1620 Visitation with additions is interesting, it is the old story of being wary of copied material. My decision to go back and look at the earlier original Visitations may have saved me a few hours of thought in the direction of the first Pincombe at North Molton having married twice :)

Pincombe Family at North Molton, Bishops Nympton, Molland

One of the last wills from my earliest purchases of wills from Documents on Line at the National Archives is written by William Pincombe of Molland and he mentions the Pincombe Family at North Molton, Filleigh, Bishops Nympton and his own line at Molland. He doesn't mention cousin in this relationship but already he would be 3rd cousin to the mentioned individuals and perhaps considered them to be somewhat distant. I do not have any first cousins and few second cousins so that third cousins seem close to me but looking at their mutual ancestors all descendant of William Pincombe and Emotte Snow and the numbers were quite large in that this couple had nine children still alive in 1602 when William leaves his will and the youngest was over 21. The potential for a large number of descendants could have made 3rd cousins quite distant in the family groupings although the relationship would still presumably have been known in the 1630s. Since I do not know all of my 2nd cousins other than by name it is quite possible that I would not think of them as cousins in the sense of 1st cousins - I can see that now although as a child I thought a 2nd cousin was very close.

I am continuing to work on the Parish Registers for North Molton and have completed 1547 with 178 baptisms, 41 marriages, and 78 burials. The registers are somewhat difficult in spots in this earliest register but it is so lucky to have a register going back to 1539. At the time that I purchased North Molton I bought Parish Registers 1, 2, 3 and 13. At some point I may purchase more of them depending on the frequency of my surnames in that parish as I move towards the present. I also have the Parish Registers for Molland, Merton, Rose Ash and they too are are projects that I am keen on starting. Although I have read through them and extracted my family notes I find that just reading the register I miss entries on occasion and so transcribing them gives me a better overall picture of my family lines in these particular villages.

The Pincombe family was at North Molton as there is a baptism for Marye daughter of William Pincombe 8 Dec 1547. Since William Pincombe (married to Emotte Snowe) does not mention a daughter Mary I am left to ponder if this is their daughter and were they married by 1547 although their second eldest son (according to the Visitation) wasn't born until 1566. I suspect this is not William Pincombe married to Emotte Snowe and in that case who is he?

We know from the Visitation that the Pincombe family is first at North Molton where Lord Zouch held the manor. This has led to my premise that either the first Pincombe married twice or there is a missing generation. I am tending more towards the first Pincombe marrying twice but no evidence of either actually other than the names of the children:  John, John, and Thomas. We know that one of the two John Pincombes married into the Dodderidge family and that eventually the family daughtered out and Gertrude set up a large Pincombe Trust which is still in existence today. Entailed land would have gone to a descendant further back but if the land that was acquired was from the wife of the first Pincombe then that would not be the case and Gertrude would have been free to sell or otherwise discharge all holdings since she and her sisters were the surviving heirs and any land that was entailed would have gone to the Tuckfield family which it did. In particular this furtherest back John would have needed to be an only child or the necessity of assigned proper descent to property would have arisen and it does not appear to have done so. The wills certainly lend credence to this thought.

I am then left with the knowledge from the Visitations that this John Pincombe who eventually lived at South Molton had two sons John and Christopher both of whom had large land holdings. Gertrude being descendant of John. I have not yet traced Christopher's line but it also appears to daughter out much earlier. Is it possible that William is a third son? Why he wasn't mentioned in the Visitation though is a mystery although he does continue at North Molton. Reviewing the tax rolls once again:

Surname    Forename    Parish    Year    Property
Pyncombe     Christopher  South Molton    1544 Subsidy    10
Pyncome       John            South Molton     1544 Subsidy    13
Pynkeham     Philip          Tawstocke          1544 Subsidy    8
Pencombe    Richard       Bideford              1544 Subsidy    5
Pencombe    Thomas       East Buckland     1544 Subsidy    9
Pencombe    Alice (wid)  North Molton      1545 Subsidy    5
Pencombe    John           North Molton       1545 Subsidy    4
Pencombe    Richard      Kings Nympton     1545 Subsidy    1

Pencombe    William      North Molton        1545 Subsidy    6

We can see Christopher and John at South Molton (Is the John at North Molton their father?). There is a William at North Molton and Thomas is still at East Buckland (father of William Pincombe married to Emotte Snowe). Alice at North Molton is a widow. There is also a John at North Molton. Definitely there are too many Pincombe entries when one compares this list with the Visitation of Devon genealogy tree for the Pincombe family of North Molton. It is a slowly unraveling mystery. Who is William Pincombe at North Molton in 1545; whose son is he? As I work my way through the North Molton Parish Register I hope to find some answers.

Will of John Pincombe, South Molton, 20 Nov 1593 - PROB 11/105 - Image reference 131/622

I have two wills for John Pincombe, Merchant, South Molton dated 1605 (i.e. they were both probated in 1605 under PROB 11/105). I will transcribe both of them but the one in this blog belongs to the son of John Pincombe, Merchant, South Molton according to the Visitation of Devon 1620, this line descends from the same line as Thomas Pincombe discussed yesterday in my blog. One of the two Johns mentioned as brothers of Thomas in the Visitation is the grandfather of the testator in the will below. The testator John Pincombe is married to Amye Dodderidge 17 Nov 1578 at South Molton according to the earlier study chart and Barnstaple according to the IGI and Amye was the daughter of Richard Dodderidge (a Merchant at South Molton) and sister to Sir John Dodderidge. Sir John Doddridge (Doderidge or Dodderidge) (1555 – 1628) was a lawyer, judge and Member of Parliament, known also as an antiquarian and writer. From a habit of shutting his eyes while listening intently to a case, he acquired the nickname of 'the sleeping judge.'  Wikipedia has more information on Sir John http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Doddridge

The marriage date of 1578 gives somewhat of a timeline for this Pincombe line. A date of birth for John Pincombe married to Amye Dodderidge would be the 1540s to 1550s. His father John's wife is unknown thus far but I may have some information after I transcribe his will. According to the chart prepared by the earlier researchers John had a sister Helen who did not marry. That would give us a likely marriage in the 1540s to 1550s and a date of birth for the father John in  the 1510s to 1520s. I did not approximate a date for Thomas Pincombe yesterday but did come up with the 1500s to 1510s for Johanne Pencombe his possible wife who left her will in 1563. That would mean that their father (unknown) Pincombe would have been born possibly in the 1470s to 1480s. The Pincombe who accompanied Lord Zouch to North Molton was already an adult in 1485. It is this dateline that has given me the thought that there is a generation missing in the Visitation and in the resultant charts by the earlier researchers. Possibly the unknown Pincombe brought children with him and determining that will be difficult I suspect.

The earlier study shows only one child born to John and Amye Pincombe and only one child is mentioned in the will; John Pincombe son of the couple and he was not yet 21 in 1593 or 1597. The chart from the earlier study shows his birth as 1586 at South Molton. The parish records for South Molton commence in 1601 so are not helpful in this case. However the parish records for Barnstaple do go back to 1538 and at some point I must collect the Pincombe family members in these records.

Probate of the will for John Pincombe was sworn to by Amye Pincombe as his widow in 1605.

I find his gifts to the poor people of the various villages  including North Molton, South Molton, Barnestable (Barnstaple), Chumley (perhaps Chulmleigh), Georgenymet (George Nympton), Bysshopnymet (Bishops Nympton), Chittinton (perhaps Chittlehampton)  and Tiverton to be rather interesting. The family lore for the South Molton Pincombe family is that the Pincombe family at Barnstaple is descended from their line. The chart from the earlier researchers does have a son Richard (brother to John (father of the John who wrote the will in 1593)) about whom nothing is known although there is a Richard Pincombe at Barnstaple on the chart from the earlier researchers in this time period (linking them would certainly prove the family lore).
