Continuing on the matches

Worked yesterday on the matches and also did yard work. It was an efficient working day. I shall write my cousin as well today in the west. I keep meaning to do so but the Knight book is a very long way off although there will be mention of the Knight family in the Blake book because Maria Jane Knight was her great grand aunt as well as my great grandmother.

The matches (I completed five) were fairly straightforward but only two could be restricted to the great grandparent line. I will continue to work on that today although Church will be in just over an hour so not as much as yesterday.

I have managed to clear away all the weeds and wild spring flowers from the emerging plants so we will see how that goes. But it is good to have the front done. I still need to rake the lawn although I generally wait until the dandelions are finished so that the bees can work them.

Not paying much attention to the news for the most part. Occasionally read the editorials in the National Post when they catch my eye. The Prime Minister and his Cabinet are very very busy from the news that I do watch. I like the concept of Fortress North America (borrowing that familiar phrase from the Second World War). I still remember references to Fortress North America in my young years. Here in Canada before the United States came into the war, we helped to protect American neutrality by pushing planes over the border in the west that had been purchased by the war front in the British Isles and then flying them to England (many women pilots flew those planes to England during the war from Canada (as well as male but they were needed at the front for the most part)). When the Americans came into the war the term Fortress North America was coined. That it would also suit trade discussions is an interesting concept which was mentioned by the Prime Minister at the Conference in Toronto.

Toronto is an important city in Ontario (the capital of the province) which we all know in Ontario but also it has the ability to hold large conferences with individuals from all over the world with a huge airport for those arriving and leaving including in this case Past-President Obama from the United States.  This was a meeting of CAP Action (Center for American Progress Action Fund) named the Global Progress Action Summit. Also attending was the former US Secretary of Transportation Peter Buttigieg as well as many people from around the world.

Church in a bit and then some more outside work unless it rains. What to do next? I expect I need to start working down the sides and we want to move some of the rich earth from the central garden as it is now full of roots from the Black Walnut tree and mostly useless in terms of growing anything. We need to especially build up the areas where the new fence was put in as that pretty much destroyed the gardens for that length on both sides.  We also need to free the plants as they are coming through. The hosta still not showing at the top but probably not enough sun and warmth in the morning as they are up further down in the gardens at the back.

One of the matches was quite interesting as it is in an area that was without matches. This area now covered is all Buller and all from Living DNA and people living in the United Kingdom. Since just one line predominates in England (all of my line coming down from Edwin Denner Buller is in Canada or the United States) so I know that these strong matches are from the Edwin Withers and Sarah (Welch) Withers family which was very large and found all around the world including the United Kingdom. I know there are a number of them as there are at least 25 in common in that match. So that has cleared up that mystery as we all descend from great great great grandparents -  William Welch and Sarah (Welch) Cheatle, Christopher Buller and Mary (Beard) Buller with Sarah (Welch) Withers and Ann (Welch) Buller being twin sisters.

Time for breakfast. I am late today. Solitaire Puzzles still to do.

Forging ahead with Living DNA results extraction

Getting used to a site is part of the entire process; minimizing the number of times that you look at each item perhaps the most important but it does take a bit of time to get used to each individual site. I have extracted fifteen matches from Living DNA looking at myself and the process will continue today. For the most part I can assign them to one of my four grandparent's lines based on the matches in common and my own phasing of my grandparents done five years ago. In the eleven years since I first phased my grandparents the changes have been fairly minimal primarily cosmetic. A couple of new matches that are interesting particularly in the Buller line. Matches in this line tend to be from the Commonwealth countries although there are also a number of them in the United States as well. In this line I suspect there is a pretty clear division between Buller and Taylor but I do not always have that figured out for every chromosome. For the Pincombe-Rew I have a number of clear distinctions and also for the Blake-Knight looking at my great grandparents. I haven't made an effort yet in the Cotterill?-Rawlings lines although will likely work on that through this process. I have been through 46 matches now in my account and will likely do the first 100 to 125 by advance checking but one never knows for sure until one gets there! Then I will move on to the brother that least matches me as this tends to catch most matches to the five sibling group that constitutes this research study. I will use my account at Find My Past to look at some of these matches as they do have trees now and it is primarily a United Kingdom site but has a worldwide searching ability through their records.

Prayers continuing for those affected by the fires here in Canada (looking at a map entire areas are in a danger zone). We have had a lot of rain but it has been accompanied by lightning which is a problem in the hot dry season in the west. But as always our Military is helping a great deal with transportation of those forced to evacuate. The firefighters try to preserve the settlements and save as many homes as possible; their hours are long and prayers for them as well and our military personnel aiding all of them.

Today the Prime Minister and the Premiers of the Provinces/Territories meet to discuss priorities in our move towards abolishing our inter provincial/territorial restrictions between them within Canada and to look at and review projects that will help to increase our usage of Canadian paths to better economic use of our own products and get that process started as soon as possible - shovels in the ground so to speak. The pace is fast but our youth is up to it for sure. This will be their opportunity to shine and gradually assume the responsibilities and benefits of being the wage earners in our country utilizing our own products within our own borders and also producing for trade around the world.

Sunday and Church at Loughborough and this is home county for my Cheatle family of Leicestershire along with Ashby de la Zouch.  I have a number of very good matches with my 4th and 5th cousins in the Cheatle line. Sarah Cheatle married William Welch 24 Aug 1818 at Longdon by Lichfield Staffordshire although she was baptized at Ashby de la Zouch. They eventually moved to Birmingham and had a restaurant at the corner of Lower Temple Street and Dale End. My Buller family lived close by to the restaurant. I actually corresponded recently with a descendant of the Withers-Welch family and their Welch ancestor  Sarah who was a twin to my 2x great grandmother Anne Welch. As a result of the twinning we are excellent matches much larger than the usual 4th cousins.

Church livestreamed at my own Church and at Loughborough and will attend both. I do love going to Church and the idea of Church online for old people is a great idea I think (or any age if they want to watch rather than be present or it just works out better for their schedules). As a child I often attended twice on Sunday; once at early communion with my father and later at the morning service where I did teach Sunday School in my teen years.

Tea finished, solitaire games played and breakfast soon.

Brick Wall Number 1: Parents of Ellen Taylor

Brick Wall Number 1: Parents of Ellen Taylor

My greatest brick wall from the beginning of my genealogical research days in 2003 has been and remains my great grandmother Ellen Taylor mother of my maternal grandmother Ellen Rosina Buller. I know so very much about Ellen in some ways but I lack positive proof for the names of her parents or for her date of birth. Nor do I have her marriage date to Edwin Denner Buller (if I had that I would have her father's name presumably). I do have her death certificate. She died when my grandmother was just eleven  years old. Grandma had just been accepted to move on in school as she was 11 years old and really wanted to go on in school but she was needed at home to look after her younger sister just two years old. Her father had attended school so was able to help her continue learning at home which was lucky for her. Ellen died of pneumonia collapse (my grandmother said she had influenza followed by pneumonia) and she was just 37 years of age when she died 27 Feb 1897 at the Workhouse Infirmary Western Road UD All Saints Birmingham.

All of the children of this couple

Ellen Rosina Buller
Edwin Denner Buller
Ada Gertrude Buller
May  Edith Buller
Henry Buller (twin)
John Buller (twin)
Sarah Ann Buller

were registered (boys by their father and girls by their mother) as the children of Edwin Denner Buller and Ellen Buller formerly Taylor. However, no marriage has surfaced to date for this couple. I want to check the Roman Catholic Parish Registers as I suspect that Ellen may have been Irish descent and Roman Catholic (no proof but just a bit of family lore that points me in that direction).

If Ellen really was 37 years of age (and my grandmother also said that her mother was 37 when she died) then she would have been born between 28 Feb 1849 and the 27 Feb 1850. I have collected all the Ellen Taylor birth registrations in Birmingham between 1857 and 1862 and there are not actually all that many surprisingly. I have traced these families on the census and determined where Ellen Taylor was in 1891 when I do have the census record for the Edwin Denner Buller family including Ellen Buller. There is only one Ellen Taylor that fits if indeed she was born in Birmingham as it states on the 1891 census. This is the daughter of Thomas Taylor (shoemaker) and Ellen Roberts born 9 October 1859. Ellen is on the census in 1861 with her parents and in 1871 with her mother and siblings. I know that the Ellen Taylor on the census in 1881 at Aston Workhouse with Florence Taylor is likely the eventual wife of Edwin Denner Buller because Florence Elizabeth Taylor was her illegitimate daughter born in 1879 (this is known to be true) although that the Ellen and Florence at the Workhouse are indeed one in the same may only be because I can not find them anywhere else in 1881! Edwin Denner Buller is missing from the 1881 census but is possibly in South Africa working as a jeweller for his uncle Edwin Withers.

So do I have enough proof to attach Ellen to these parents? As always I am looking for that one conclusive piece that might link them. Lately on Find My Past I have discovered where Edwin Denner Buller and Ellen Buller were buried in 1899 and 1897 respectively. I will be ordering the burial certificates to see if I can learn anything new.

Another interesting family lore is that Ellen's father was a shoemaker and Thomas Taylor was a shoemaker. Also my grandmother lived with an "Aunt Kate" before she came to Canada in 1808. Ellen had a sister Kate. So again conclusive enough? I have tested my mtDNA and perhaps when someone exactly matches me that will give me the piece of proof that is icing on the cake and lets me think yes I have found my Ellen Taylor's correct line!

Will of Nathaniel Bever of Basingstoke, Esquire - The National Archives PROB 11/1110/41, probated 13 Nov 1783

Again another one of my lines is the Bever family of Goodworth Clatford and Upper Clatford Hampshire. I imaged this will just out of curiosity. This particular Bever family of Basingstoke consists of Nathaniel Bever married to Jenny Anne with children Jenny Anne baptized 1 Mar 1739, Henrietta Maria baptized 28 Apr 1741, Nathaniel baptized 22 Dec 1746 at Basingstoke and Molly baptized 12 Aug 1751 at Saint Martin in the Fields, Westminster, London. Nathaniel the son must have died as he is not mentioned in the will. His daughter Henrietta is 42 years of age when he writes this will which if you are reading the will is surprising due to his comments therein.

There is an entry in the IGI for a marriage of Nathaniel Beaver to Jenny Ann Dalton 9 May 1737 in Westminster, Middlesex. The spelling of Beaver is interesting because my family used Bever /Beaver interchangeably in the records (at least the priest recording events did).

For my own line I have Anthony Beaver/Bever married Susanna Johnson 20 Jul 1710 at Upper Clatford and they were both buried at Upper Clatford Anthony 11 Oct 1724 and Susanna 3 Apr 1736. They were not baptized at Upper Clatford. Their children: Dinah baptized Jun 1712 at Upper Clatford and buried there 7 May 1783 married to Clement Coleman who owned/managed an Inn at Goodworth Clatford although he too was buried 8 Feb 1753 at Upper Clatford. I have not yet found their marriage lines but I haven't transcribed Goodworth Clatford records yet (fiche ready and waiting :) ). Their other children were Susannah (buried 7 Mar 1764 at Upper Clatford) and Thomas baptized 12 May 1717 at Upper Clatford and buried there 1 Dec 1732. Susannah did not marry so the only descendants of this couple are my Coleman ancestors.

Nathaniel has left a seven page will so I wondered if he might mention any of his cousins/siblings. Hence my interest in transcribing this will. There is one other Bever will (from 1618) to transcribe as I move through the wills that my husband and I imaged at Kew in October 2010.

William Withers Pink Garret was baptized 12 Oct 1769 at Saint Maurice, Winchester and the son of William Garret. William Withers Pink Garrett married Maria (unknown) and they had two children baptized at Milton Lilbourne Wiltshire - William Bever 17 Jan 1807 and Eliza Ann baptized 23 Dec 1805 also at Milton Lilbourne Wiltshire with mother Maria.

Interesting will and the last probate gives admon to the three daughters because the two executors have died with the last one dying intestate so the court picks residuary legatees. Eventually the estate must have passed to William Bever Garret if he survived to the age of 21 years. However, nothing learned about my Bever family.

Welch at Rugeley, Staffordshire and Birmingham

Anne Welch married Henry Christopher Buller 23 Aug 1838 at Edgbaston, Warwickshire, UK with this being a first marriage for Anne and a second marriage for Henry Christopher Buller. Anne was only 18 years of age but claimed to be "full age" or 21 years of age. The witnesses for the marriage are unknown to me and do not appear to provide any further details on this family. I suspect that she eloped although the next time we see Anne she is on the census with her family and first child also Henry a 2 year old (1841) whilst Henry is in London running his butcher shop in the Covent Garden area. At some point Anne joins Henry in London (or perhaps she was just on holiday back to her parents in 1841) but the next four children are born in London and baptized at St Martin in the Field. We visited this church which overlooks Trafalgar Square and ate at their cafeteria in the crypt when we visited last October.

Anne was a twin and baptized 4 Jan 1820 at Ashby de la Zouch, Leicestershire. According to the census she was born at Lichfield, Staffordshire. Her parents were William Welch and Sarah Cheatle who were themselves married 24 Aug 1818 at Longdon by Lichfield also Staffordshire. Both William and Sarah signed the marriage registration and one of the witnesses was William Cheatle.

In the 1851 census of the Welch family at Birmingham  visiting them is Hannah Tomlinson who is soon to become the wife of one of Anne's brothers and by lucky coincidence is also a niece to William Welch. His sister Mary Welch married John Tomlinson 26 Jun 1814 at Rugeley, Staffordshire and both William and Hannah had listed Rugeley as their place of birth on this census. William on this census and on the 1841 census is listed as proprietor of Welch Eating House located on the corner of Lower Temple Street and King Street in Birmingham. His occupation is listed as Provision Dealer. The priest, on his daughter's marriage registration (and actually all of the children), has listed William Welch as a gentleman.

Locating William at Rugeley proved to be a fairly straightforward pursuit and he was the son of John Welch and Margaret Brockhouse and they were married 16 Feb 1783 at Rugeley. They had 11 children

Thomas baptized 3 Nov 1783 at Rugeley and married to Rebecca Reeves 8 Aug 1814 at Rugeley (and they had seven children - Mary b 1815, Elizabeth b 1816, John b 1819, Joseph b 1823, Thomas b 1826, Martha b 1833 and Samuel b 1838).

Minnie married Walter James Haynes sep quarter 1884 at Birmingham and Anne Buller is found on the 1891 census with her niece and her family. Second marriage for Henry was to Mary Copeland Yates mar quarter 1863 at Aston and they had two children William bc 1864 and Albert C bc 1866 both at Birmingham. Third marriage for Henry was to Mary Newey march quarter 1870 at King's Norton and they had four children Frances E bc 1870, Sidney J bc 1872, Ernest E bc 1875 and Lilley bc 1880 all at Birmingham.

Hannah baptized 6 Apr 1794 at Rugeley and married to John Wilks 26 Dec 1814 at Rugeley (they had one daughter).

Susanna baptized 8 Nov 1795 at Rugeley.

Frances baptized 2 Jul 1797 at Rugeley.

Henry baptized 5 May 1799 at Rugeley and married to Elizabeth Radford 19 Apr 1824 at Colton Staffordshire (they had three children - Henry baptized 5 Feb 1826 at Rugeley and married to Elizabeth and they had six children, Elizabeth baptized 22 Aug 1827 at Rugeley and married to John Stretton mar quarter 1848 at Rugeley and they had a number of children, and Anne baptized 20 Jun 1830 at Rugeley.

James baptized 12 Jul 1801 at Rugeley married Lucy and they had six children .

In general, as far as I could tell from the parish registers, all of the Welch entries after the mid 1700s at Rugeley belong to the descendants of John Welch and Margaret Brockhouse.

Reading the Rugeley parish registers at Salt Lake City it was quite straightforward to trace John Welch back to his parents Thomas and Mary Welch at his baptism 25 Apr 1756 at Rugeley and their marriage as there was only the one Welch family at Rugeley. Thomas Welch married Mary Linn by Banns 2 Sep 1745. Thomas himself was baptized 22 Apr 1711 at Rugeley the son of William and Sarah Welch. Thomas and Mary Welch had five children

Sarah baptized 28 Jun 1747 at Rugeley

Mary baptized 8 Apr 1753 at Rugeley

John (as above)

Ann baptized 26 Dec 1758 at Rugeley

Susannah baptized 3 May 1761 at Rugeley

Since they had four daughters John was the only Welch to baptize children in the next generation at Rugeley.

The marriage of William and Sarah Welch does not appear to be at Rugeley; William was buried there 20 Apr 1713.

A few Welch entries from the Parish Register up to 1718:

Service    Day-month    Year    Surname,forename    Information
Marriage    30 Dec    1675    Welch, Richard    Margery Litton
Baptism    22 Apr    1711    Thomas    S William & Sarah Welch
Baptism    24 Jan    1713    Welch, Winifred    D William & Sarah Welch, posthumous
Burial    26 Dec    1712    Welch, Mary    D William Welch
Burial    20 Apr    1713    Welch, William
Baptism    10 Oct    1714    Welch, Anne    D Mr. Henry & Anne Welch
Marriage    4 Nov    1717    Welch, Edith    Thomas Harvey, banns
Baptism    16 Jan    1717    Welch, John    Bastard son of Sarah Welch

The Welch family is found there as noted in 1675 and again the entries after 1713 which appear to be a different family from the William and Sarah Welch grouping from 1711 to 1713.

I had expected to find a lot of Welch families on the IGI in the area but the only one I found was a William Welch baptized  21 Jul 1666 at Farewell Staffordshire and the son of John Welch and that was between 1650 and 1690 in Staffordshire. Expanding that to Warwick I found two more entries - one at Wormleighton in 1664  and one at Claverdon in 1680. Leicester had no baptismal entries. Shropshire had one in 1690 at Bishops Castle.

I transcribed the land tax assessments for Rugeley and did not find any indication of my Welch family in those entries in 1783 and 1813.
