Will of Charles Blake of Maryland Province - The National Archives PROB 11/663, probated 17 Jan 1733

Charles Blake, the testator, was married to Henrietta Maria Lloyd. He died 18 Mar 1732 at Queenstown, Queen Ann, Maryland Province (currently Maryland, USA). They had four children

John Blake
Henrietta (Henny) Maria Blake 1700
Philemon Charles Blake
Dorothy Blake born 26 Nov 1702, died 8 Jul 1734

Charles Blake, the testator, was the son of Charles Blake and Dorothy Sayer. Charles (the father) left his will dated 7 Oct 1832 and had knowledge of his son’s death prior to that time. In Charles’, the testator) will he mentions property which his father has given him leave to sell and expressed a desire that his father do sell this property and the money to come to his children as proposed in the will. I will transcribe Charles’ father’s will next.

Charles Blake, the testator, is born in England likely as his father is still living there.

Online trees suggest that Charles Blake married Henrietta Maria Lloyd in London, England but I could not find a verification of this marriage in the records in London but they could have married at a “Peculiar” Parish.

This is one of the “founding” Blake lines in the United States. There is information on the Lloyd family in “Adventurers of Purse and Person, Virginia, 1607-1624/5: Families G - P; edited by John Frederick Dorman and published by the Genealogical Publishing Company.

https://books.google.ca/books?id=tcM40zgdAZgC&pg=PA437&lpg=PA437&dq=Charles+Blake+wye+river+maryland&source=bl&ots=xMAwnPEk9a&sig=afSJUlY4EVIThXp2E2gI1uL_RZ0&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwi6nbfxouLRAhVK7YMKHVmNBxcQ6AEIGjAA#v=onepage&q=Charles%20Blake%20wye%20river%20maryland&f=false

From this particular book:  Henrietta Maria Lloyd was the daughter of  Philemon Lloyd and Henrietta Maria (Neale) Bennett (widow of Richard Bennett).  She married Charles Blake who came to Maryland about 1685 and settled at Wye River. Their children named in this book: John Sayer Blake, Philemon Charles Blake, Henrietta Maria Blake (married (unknown) Stringfellow); and Dorothy (married to Charles Carroll).

The Lloyd family arrived in Maryland as early as 1623/24 and on 30 Mar 1636 he received a patent for 400 acres in the westernmost branch of Elizabeth River.

A tree on World Connect has transcribed a will purported to be that of John Sayer Blake:

To wife Frances, 1/3 of estate, real and personal, except the plate and linen.
To nephew Charles Blake and godson John Blake, 1/3 of estate, real and personal, equally.
To the English Benedictine Nuns and English Benedictine Monks at Paris, and to English Fri****rs, 1/3 of estate.
Testator directs exs., viz, wife Frances and Charles Blake afsd. to sell “Propt'rs Island” or some other piece of property, and out of the proceeds to pay certain personalty to Thomas Lifeholly, each of testator's grandchild. (unnamed) and to all priests in the Province. Sd. exs. also to have charge of Aunt Varney.
Test: Peter Jolly, Chris. Goodhard, Jacob Petett, Lewis de Rochburn. 7. 334.

None of the lines are traced down in any tree that I have found thus far but there were sons of John Sayer Blake living at the time of the writing of his will.

A second tree on world connect provides details on Philemon Charles Blake:

http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=my-update&id=I39929

Appraisers: John Willson, Philemon Gran.
Creditors: Anthony McCulioch, Thomas Clayland.
Next of kin: Charles Blake, Henritta Maria Blake.
Mentions: father Philemon Charles Blake.
Executrix: Ann Blake.

Philemon Charles Blake also has living sons named in his will above.

At this time I will not attempt to follow these lines down but looking at the 1790 US census in Maryland there are eleven Blake families listed.  Charles Blake, John S Blake and Philomon C Blake all at Queen Annes as three separate families, George Blake and Thomas Blake at Worcester, Isaac Blake at North Susquehannah, John Blake, William Blake and William Blake at Talbot, William Blake at Dorchester and William Blake at Baltimore Town.

The next will to transcribe will be that of the possible father of the present testator.

Will of Thomas Blake, Goldsmith, Alphington, Devon - The National Archives PROB 11/961.365, probated 19 Nov 1770

Thomas, the testator, and his wife do not appear to have any children. I believe this is the husband of Elizabeth Blake, widow, who asked to be buried beside her husband who was buried in St Martin Church in Exeter (line 149 of this will includes his request to be buried at St Martin Church in Exeter). The marriage of Thomas Blake and Elizabeth Hatherly was celebrated 26 Oct 1752 at Kenton Devon (Kenton is 7 miles SSE of Exeter).

Looking again at the website online mentioned in the blog for Elizabeth Blake wife of the testator:

Blog for Elizabeth: http://kippeeb.blogspot.ca/2013/06/will-of-elizabeth-blake-widow-saint.html

Website looking at this Blake family: http://www.portbury-hundred.co.uk/admiralreport.htm

Thomas mentions sisters and the website above has siblings Martha and Joan for the possible father of Thomas, the testator (and this website above gives the testator Thomas siblings Nicholas and George). This Thomas (possible father of the testator) is said to be the son of John Blake married to (unknown) Tychbourne. This John is said to be the son of Nicholas Blake and Mary Matthews (they had two sons Thomas and John). Nicholas is said to be the son of Nicholas Blake and Anne Meadows (they had two sons Martyn and Nicholas). This Nicholas is said to be the son of William Blake and Anne Lentlow. This William Blake is said to be the son of Martin Blake and Catherine Vaughan (they had two sons William and Richard). This Martin is said to be the son of William Blake married to Jone (unknown) (they had three sons Martin, Walter and Roger). This William is said to be the son of John Blake and unknown (John died 18 Aug 1558 in Overstowey Somerset) (they had two sons and a daughter Humphrey, William and Alice (married to unknown Cabull)). This John is said to be a son of Robert Blake and Avice Wallop which is incorrect as their son John died at Nether Wallop in 1504 leaving a will which does not name a son William.

The Blake Pedigree Chart held by the Swindon and Wiltshire Record Office does have part of this line. They have a son for John Blake (d Nether Wallop 1504 and son of Robert Blake and Avice Wallop) named David and he married Joane Mallet. His son John Blake later became the Abbot of Cirencester in Gloucester) and second son William Blake of Lacock Wiltshire married Margaret Brown (daughter of William Browne of Wablyn). William and Margaret are shown to have two sons Martin who married Catherine Vaughan and John who is said to be the ancestor of Lord High Admiral Robert Blake. This family then disappears from the chart. The time frame for the information on the website mentioned above does not fit the actual and I believe I finally do dismiss it in some parts. The individual who created the online website lives in Somerset and is quite knowledgeable but some of the information is taken from sources that are incorrect namely Horatio Gates Somersby. I will let her know of this latest will so that she can revise her webpage if she so wishes to do. There is still the problem is Thomas the testator a son of the Reverend Thomas Blake who was buried at Alwington

Interesting that Thomas, the testator, mentions having Clergyman’s robes and Cassocks in his home and is this proof that he is indeed descended from the Reverend Thomas Blake who was buried 23 Nov 1713 at Alwington at the age of 61 years.

Stuckly Stevins was baptized 17 Dec 1721 at Barnstaple son of John Stevins and Mary. There were two marriages on Family Search that could be his parents: John Steephins married Mary Rice 14 Jun 1713 at Saint Mary Arches, Exeter, Devon and John Stephans married Mary Shamler 26 Dec 1713 at Kenn, Devon. I suspect that neither of these marriages are his parents however as both are in the Exeter area! The National Archives (UK) carries a document dated 2 Apr 1798 48/25/11/22 which names Stuckly Stevens as a leasee of Castle House in Barnstaple prior to that time.

Mrs. Juliana Pasley/Pasly is mentioned in both the will of Martha Blake blogged (http://kippeeb.blogspot.ca/2013/07/will-of-martha-blake-widow-exon-devon.html ) and the present will. She was a niece to Martha Blake.

The Charles Cutcliffe family of Weach (in the parish of Westleigh) found in the following webpage of the parish of Westleigh:

http://www.westleigh-devon.gov.uk/family/cutcliffe2.htm

As always very interesting to put these wills together. The Commissioner for this will’s deponents was John Stabback who was mentioned in the wills of Elizabeth, wife of Thomas the present testator and Martha Blake. I wonder why Thomas doesn’t mention that Martha is his sister in law though if she actually is.

Will of George Blake of Bodwin Cornwall - The National Archives PROB 11/498/56, probated 3 Nov 1707

The testator George Blake is recorded as being at Bodwin Cornwall. I suspect this is an error and that it should read Bodmin Cornwall and will investigate that further. No children are mentioned in the will only his mother Mary Walbridge of White Chappell Middlesex and his wife Sarah Blake of Bodwin Cornwall. Did Sarah continue living there and did they have children? His mother Mary Walbridge probated the will in 1707.

An interesting will but no further details could be found on George Blake or Sarah Blake in Bodmin Cornwall.

Will of Thomas Burges, husbandman, North Molton, Devon - The National Archives PROB 11/66/383, probated 18 Mar 1584

The testator Thomas Burges was a husbandman at North Molton and I refer to him in my blog post:

http://kippeeb.blogspot.ca/2011/08/north-molton-parish-registers-burges.html

I am curious if Thomas was a brother to my Paul Burges at North Molton. Paul left a will in 1579 which was lost in the bombing of Exeter during WWII. My trace down from Paul is as follows:

Paul Burges
Matthew Burges
John Burges
Margarett Burges
John Tapp
Elizabeth Tapp
Grace Manning
John Pincombe
Robert Pincombe
John Pincombe
William Robert Pincombe
John Routledge Pincombe (my maternal grandfather)

A total of 13 generations back from me which is an amazing spread of years. I have not yet investigated the Manor Books for North Molton to learn more about the Burges family there but that will be a future project for looking at the Burges family. Since they are so far back I do not have them listed as one of my family lines for researching so will replace the Morgan family with the Burges family.

The second will that I collected for the Burges Family is Robert Burges of Twitchen, Devon and his will was probated 20 May 1590 (PROB 11/75/335). I will transcribe his will the next Burges Research Day. I chose his will because Twitchen is very close to North Molton in Devon.

No mention of Paul Burges in this will but interestingly he names Christopher Pincombe as one of his overseers. Eventually the Burges family does marry into the Pincombe family.

Looking at the extracted Burges family records in the previous blog on the North Molton registers mentioned above I can find the children that Thomas mentions (missing are Anthony, George and Thomas who were likely baptized prior to be beginning of the parish registers):

William son of Thomas Burges baptized 12 Jan 1541
English son of Thomas Burges baptized 11 Jan 1547
Philip son of Thomas Burges baptized 6 Mar 1554
John son of Thomas Burges baptized 4 Mar 1556; buried 4 Mar 1556
William son of Thomas Burges baptized 4 Mar 1556; buried 4 Mar 1556
John son of Thomas Burges baptized 12 May 1557

The last John is probably his grandson (son of his son Thomas). Elizabeth baptized 19 Aug 1540  is likely his daughter but not mentioned (nor is there a burial for her). No answer to a relationship between Paule Burges also baptizing children at the same time in North Molton and this Thomas Burges.

The order in which Thomas mentions his sons: Phillipp, John, Anthonye, William, George, and English. This does appear to be random and not by age looking at he baptisms.

Will of William Buller, Soap Boiler, Nether Stowey, Somerset - The National Archives PROB 11/1137/59, probated 31 Jan 1786

William Buller is the testator in this last will for Somerset. He is at Nether Stowey and looking at the Parish Records for Nether Stowey: Probably this is the William and Jane who were witnesses to the will of Sarah.

Baptisms
Jane Buller daughter of William and Jane baptized 14 Dec 1739
Richard Buller son of William and Jane baptized 27 Jul 1741
Elizabeth Buller daughter of William and Jane baptized 12 May 1743
William Buller son of William and Jane baptized 27 Jun 1745
Sarah Buller daughter of William and Jane baptized 27 Feb 1747
Christian Buller daughter of William and Jane baptized 12 Jan 1749
Mary Buller daughter of William and Jane baptized 9 Oct 1753

Marriages
Abraham Stevens and Elizabeth Buller married 28 Nov 1765

Burials
Mary Buller daughter of William and Jane buried 18 Oct 1753
Jane Buller, daughter of William, buried 17 Sep 1773
William Buller buried 9 Jan 1786

William does not mention his sons Richard or William only his daughter Elizabeth but in the capacity of his son in law Abraham Stevens (Elizabeth herself not mentioned). Since his first child is baptized in 1739 William was likely born before 1720. He is likely the William Buller son of Gregory and Jane baptized at Nether Stowey 9 Dec 1709 and hence kin to the Edward and Sarah Buller family whose wills have been transcribed over the past few days. The testator lived to a good age being as much as 79 years of age if he was indeed baptized in 1709. If his sons actually survived there is a potential for one of them to be the father of Christopher Buller although there are also daughters Sarah and Christian. The mention of the Silke family is also interesting as the sister of Gregory and Edward married William Silke.

It has been an interesting foray through the Somerset Buller wills and I have a lot of lines that are simply not traced down. Did they all die as children? I will leave such thoughts for a Buller research day sometime in the future if the Warwickshire wills do not assist me in searching out Christopher Buller.

The next set of four wills are for three members of the Buller family in Surrey (and one is labeled in error as Buller as it is another Butler will but transcribed anyway :) ):

Anthony Buller, Weybridge Surrey, PROB 11/361/7, probated 31 Oct 1679
Charles Buller, Richmond Surrey, PROB 11/2079/35, probated 16 Aug 1848
John Roberts Butler, apothecary, Battersea Surrey, PROB 11/750/44, probated 31 Oct 1746
Francis Buller, Kingston upon Thames, Surrey, PROB 11/355/436, probated 22 Nov 1677

I may need to order the Will of William Buller of Lambeth, Surrey probated 5 Apr 1819 PROB 11/1615/21. I think I have this will and will check again but it might prove to be interesting.

Will of George Buller, Gentleman, Nether Stowey - The National Archives PROB 11/1331/22, probated 1 Oct 1799

George Buller the Testator is again likely a descendant of the Buller family at Lillesdon but no actual proof of that. He was buried 12 Jul 1799 at Nether Stowey. There is a marriage of George Buller of Stringston and Martha Govett of Stringston 15 Aug 1745 at Kilve. From the Genuki webpages for Stringston (http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/SOM/Stringston/index.html) the vicarage is annexed to Kilve thus explaining why the marriage was at Kilve. Kilve is 2 miles WNW of Stringston and Nether Stowey is 3 miles SSE of Stringston. However, the baptisms that fit with the children in the will are to a George and Mary so suspect that this George Buller was married to Mary Morrish 16 Oct 1759 at Nether Stowey. Just interesting to see the name Govett in the will and then the earlier marriage. The marriage between George Buller and Mary Morrish was by license. However they are not the parents of Christopher at least no Christopher Buller is baptized as a son of George and Mary. Mind you he could have been married to both Martha and Mary as the marriages are 14 years apart. But the children named in the will were all baptized to George and Mary Buller (Sarah's baptism is missing). The marriage by license is interesting and not unusual when a widower or widow is remarrying.

By the mid 1600s Lillesdon is held by Edward Courte so the Buller family has moved away from Lillesdon. I will pull up the Buller names on the Protestation Returns for Somerset shortly to have a look at the places in which they were found in 1641/42.

This is an excellent will especially as the probate actually names the husbands of these daughters.

Lillesdon is in the Parish of North Curry. Lillesdon is 12 miles NW of Nether Stowey, 15 miles NW of Kilton and 19 miles WNW of Nettlecombe.

On the Martin Southwood transcriptions for West Somerset parish records (more below) (http://www.wsom.org.uk/Registers/NStyMar17501836.htm) I found:

Marriage of Thomas Newton (Crowcombe) and Martha Ann Buller 16 May 1798 at Nether Stowey.
Baptism of Jane daughter of Sarah Buller 9 Mar 1792.

The marriages for  William Alford and Mary Buller and  Robert Parker and Elizabeth Buller were at Kilton (as were those of their brothers George and John).

There are a number of Buller entries in the Parish Registers of Nether Stowey but an interesting item in British History on line in the Stringston area follows (http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.aspx?compid=18499)

An estate described in the 16th century as HOLWELL manor and perhaps before 1539 owned by Buckland priory came into the possession of Thomas Hill (d. 1565), and he sold part of it to Edward Jenkins (d. c. 1572). (fn. 47) Andrew Jenkins (d. 1593) held other land of George Hill, Thomas's son. (fn. 48) By the 17th century three separate holdings at Holwell may have derived from Hill's estate. One, later known as Nether, Lower, or Middle Holwell, was assigned in 1602 by John Malet and his wife Mary to John Colford, in succession to John Jenkins. (fn. 49) The Colfords, who are said to have held the land in chief by knight service, remained in possession until the later 17th century, but by 1710 had sold to George Buller. (fn. 50) George's great-nephew, also George Buller, sold it in 1789 to John Barrell, and John's son, also John, in 1857 conveyed it to the Revd. Henry Codrington. Henry conveyed it to trustees. (fn. 51).

I have decided to extract all the Buller entries from the online site for the West Somerset Parish Registers just to have a look at them and have them in one place for future reference as I am prone to thinking that Christopher Buller is descendant of this line especially having eliminated the Cornwall/Devon Buller families for the most part.
