Sunday in God's World

 We are back to Sunday once again in God's World. The week passed quickly and was very busy. The weather non-typical for December in many ways but not that unusual to have a spell of rain in the winter. The snow base is still intact and more snow fell yesterday and more this week. Soon back skiing again and enjoying all of that wonderful winter that Canada has. But Sunday is special; Church today on YouTube if that works out. It is the fourth Sunday in Advent and Christmas comes on Thursday. But most especially once again in a tradition that stretches back over two thousand years we will celebrate, those of the Christian faith, the coming of the Christ Child - Jesus Christ - into our world so briefly but his birth was a history changing event that was to change the European/Asian Continent in enormous ways. Those simple words - love they neighbour as thyself - would become the body of a faith that grew out of the Celtic Faith of Europe into the Christian faith which is still with us today. My Anglicanism dates back into that ancient Celtic Faith that flowered in the British Isles and has its roots perhaps in one of the Lost Tribes of Israel. That is unknown and simply a tale handed down generation after generation it would appear since my grandfather passed it to me (as did my father). Now in this quiet time when we are covered by winter snow we await the coming once again of the Christ Child into our lives. 

Made large strides with Chromosome 17 but many of the matches are for the very beginning of the chromosome and shared by my elder brother and a younger brother only and date back centuries with many of the matches being from Georgia and Alabama and the Carolinas. I do know that this is Routledge/Rutledge and that any connection with probably 80% of them dates back centuries. My Routledge lines came to Canada in 1818 - Thomas Routledge and his wife Elizabeth (Routledge) Routledge (2nd cousins once removed) came to Canada with their large family from Bewcastle, Cumberland, England and took up land in London Township which was deeded to them by Colonel Thomas Talbot. The eldest daughter Margaret Routledge married  Thomas Carling and their son was Sir John Carling. My 2x great grandmother was their youngest daughter Elizabeth Mary Ann (sister to Margaret) who married Robert Gray and their daughter Grace married William Robert Pincombe with their only surviving to adulthood child was John Routledge Pincombe, my maternal grandfather. But already on this continent there was a large group of Routledge/Rutledge living in the southern states and it is descendants of that group who match my two brothers on Chromosome 17 with matches in the 30 centimorgan length and that connection is a long way back. Edward Rutledge (I suspect this is his line) was born 23 Nov 1749 at Charleston, South Carolina and is an American Founding Father who signed the Continental Association and Declaration of Independence. His family had come from Ireland to the American Colonies. They were in Ireland because some of the Rutledge/Routledge families fled there way back in the 1400s and later from the Highlands of Scotland and that is a long story for another time but my lines came to Bewcastle from the Highlands of Scotland which is a story better known to me. My line were known as the Oakshaw/Yakeshaw Routledge Family of Bewcastle with both Thomas and Elizabeth being members of the Oakshaw/Yakeshaw Routledge Family lines. This was the border lands and heavily contested at various times in British History going back into the 1400s. My mother always said that the Routledge family came to Canada because of turmoil in the Border Lands - no ideas on that I suspect that they just wanted a better life for their six sons as the eldest would have inherited the property on which they lived there and the other five would have to make their way in other ways and in Canada they all had land which was an enticement at that time. So they sold their property rights to a cousin Routledge and they came to Canada. My grandfather talked a lot about his mother's first cousin Sir John Carling and indeed learned a great deal about Parliament and debating from him as a child which he passed on to his son my uncle William Edwin Pincombe. I also was able to separate out Buller and Rawlings but this Chromosome is heavily Pincombe/Gray as my two great grandparent lines (it is at the 3x great grandparent line that my Thomas and Elizabeth (Routledge) Routledge appear) and heavily inherited by all of us siblings. The other lengths do not appear to lead back in time to the Rutledge family in the United States in the same way as that first length (56 matches in total have been collected that are shared by these two brothers in this first length and I have not listed all of them in my chart sticking primarily to those between 20 to 30 centimorgans in length). It does not show up as a pile-up or common area so is just simply a common area for this family. I do find it interesting that the Rutledge family of the southern states was so involved in politics as was my great grandmother's first cousin Sir John Carling. These matches went very quickly and I have completed them in the one day surprisingly. Mind you there is still a lot of work to do looking at the trees for the lines I can not readily separate into each great grandparent line. But that will be later once I draw out all of the matches back to the First Chromosome. So today, if there is time, I will work on the 16th Chromosome which has 62 matches and six are known to me as various levels of cousinship.

Thomas Routledge and Elizabeth Storye

So I am back to Thomas Routledge and Elizabeth Storye as the parents of Grace Routledge. The will abstract turned out to be too good to be true! I should have clued in when I saw George of Oakshaw and two children listed without his wife Grace. She had been buried in March 1767 although having two burials for Archibald Forrester at Stapleton did not help either as one was in 1766 when Grace was still alive. However, the correct one according to the correspondent was in May 1767. There was also the problem of Kirkbeckstown where Mary Routledge married to Thomas Routledge had been baptized and this family appeared to live there.

Thomas and Elizabeth baptized four children at Bewcastle whilst living at Oakshaw, William, Jane, Grace and Leonard. This fits the will abstract as there is a Leonard Routledge of Oakshaw mentioned along with George and the two children (my ancestor Elizabeth and her younger sister Peggy (Margaret)).

Once again this blog has more than proved its worth to me in acquiring new information from other researchers around the world.

This also fits in better with my mother's memory of her Routledge family. Three first cousin marriages although in reality it is more of a first cousin marriage and then a second cousin marriage thus far. Thomas Routledge married to Elizabeth Storye is a brother to Henry Routledge married to Margaret Tweddle. Now to fit George Routledge who married Grace Routledge into the Oakshaw picture!

I had forgotten about this record that shows Grace Routledge was of Oakshaw.  Talking to the correspondent re the Will abstract of Archibald Forrester I realized that Grace was buried before Archibald. The will is undated as far as I know but it would appear that he likely knew of the death of Grace. The abstract which was provided by the correspondent:

Reading through this abstract gives you a slightly different impression of the will. Was Archibald Forrester's wife a Routledge or was it that his sister had married a Routledge or both? He mentions that Sibilla Routledge is a relation to him.

Perhaps even more information will be forthcoming. I shall go back and search through some more of my documents as well to see what I can find.

Also the statement that there was only one Archibald Forrester buried at Stapleton in this time period and that was in 1767. So I have perhaps misread the abstract in the long run.

There are two baptisms for Grace Routledge in the 1740s and I will have to look at both of them once again.

Grace Routledge, my third and last 4x great grandparent with the surname Routledge, was the daughter of Thomas Routledge and Mary Routledge. Immediately I have to admit I become curious as to whether or not this is also the Oakshaw Routledge family which often married 1st, 2nd, 3rd cousins. George, husband of Grace, and already blogged as Challenge 10 of this 52 Ancestor Challenge:

was of the Oakshaw Routledge Family. Knowing that helps to place him into a family grouping of all the Routledge family groups in the Bewcastle, Cumberland area.

With this tendency to marry cousins I can look around for the marriage of Thomas Routledge and Mary Routledge  and a most fortunate discovery that Thomas Routledge lived at Hill and Mary Routledge was from Kirkbeckstown at the time of their marriage. Thomas was the son of a Thomas Routledge and Mary the daughter of a William Routledge. They married 18 Nov 1733 at Bewcastle.

The bolded items make this will abstract especially interesting as George and Grace, and Henry (of Broderrigg) are three of my 4x great grandparents. Finding that Mary Routledge (widow whose husband was Thomas Routledge of Hill) of Kirkbeckstown was Grace's mother was a real surprise as I tentatively had her as the daughter of Thomas Routledge and Elizabeth Storye (this Thomas being of Oakshaw and brother to Henry of Broderrigg). The Kennedy family included may also prove to be interesting as Grace Routledge (daughter of my 3x great grandparents Thomas Routledge (son of Henry above) and Elizabeth Routledge (daughter of George and Grace above)) married George Arthur Kennedy in 1810 at Bewcastle.

My mother remembered there were a number of close cousin marriages in her Routledge ancestry. Thomas Routledge of Hill and/or Mary Routledge of Kirkbeckstown could be related to the Oakshaw family; I still need to work on that. Henry Routledge at Broderrigg was born at Oakshaw.

The forename Leonard occurs in three different families at Bewcastle in this time period just to work through that name mentioned on the abstract of the will:

Leonard baptized 10 Sep 1743 at Bewcastle and the son of Thomas) is one of seven children so why single him out? The other families mentioned Catherine wife of Thomas Douglas and Helenor wife of Robert Henderson and Sibella wife of Alexander Kennedie could all be Routledge with their maiden names but they do not fit into this particular family.

 Leonard baptized 3 Jul 1743 at Bewcastle and the son of Thomas Routledge and Elizabeth Storye is of the Oakshaw family. This Thomas is a likely brother to my Henry Routledge. He had a brother William but this William died as an infant and he had two sisters Jane and Grace.

Leonard Routledge baptized 21 Apr 1746 at Bewcastle is the son of Robert Routledge and Mary Mawers (married at Lanercost) and he is one of nine children but does have a sister Helenor.

Grace Routledge (my 4x great grandmother) married  George Routledge 16 Jun 1763 at Bewcastle and they had two daughters by 1767 as mentioned in the will abstract above. Elizabeth baptized 27 Aug 1763 at Bewcastle (my 3x great grandmother) and Margaret (Peggy) baptized 24 Apr 1765 at Bewcastle and buried 7 Jun 1767 at Stapleton. Grace was buried 10 Mar 1767 at Stapleton. She would have been about 31 years of age at the time of her death.

Her father Thomas Routledge was the son of a Thomas Routledge and had married in 1733. Looking for a baptism of a Thomas Routledge son of Thomas Routledge in the early 1700s yielded:

Her mother Mary Routledge was the daughter of William Routledge this yielded:

This Mary is a sister to my 4x great grandfather Henry Routledge and their mother was Grissell Routledge (I have not yet fitted her into a family line).  This is not the William Routledge mentioned in the will as his son William died as an infant (two children named William).

Interesting that the will also refers to a William Routledge  of Oakshaw. There is a William Routledge son of William Routledge of Oakshaw baptized 28 Jan 1702. But why does it give Mary's location as Kirkbeckstown. Interesting dilemma and will continue to sort through the records for Bewcastle but it would give a logical progression for this family if Mary  (mother of Grace) was of Oakshaw and sister of Henry.

This looks very interesting on paper and certainly the marriage records lead me to this thinking that Mary mother of Grace Routledge and Henry father of Thomas Routledge are siblings and of Oakshaw. They are mentioned in the same will as other Oakshaw Routledge families so not unexpected.

I have a lot of Routledge lines with 3 of 4x great grandparents born Routledge. Going back another generation and looking at the six lines at least four are Routledge. I know that George Routledge (b 1729) was the son of George and Blanche Routledge and I suspect that Blanch's surname was also Routledge. I do not know the surname of the wife of Thomas Routledge (b 1701).

George Routledge my 4x great grandfather is the second 4x great grandfather with the surname Routledge. He is also the second one to be of the Oakshaw Routledge family as it is generally referred to in the Dodgson Manuscript. He is also listed in the Dodgson Manuscript unlike my earlier ancestor challenge written about Henry Routledge. A good deal is known about the descendants of this George Routledge.

George was baptized 17 Apr 1729 whilst living at Todhills, Bewcastle, Cumberland the son of George Routledge (mother's name missing but I am hoping that a document that I am going to review today will help with that particular item). He died 12 Jun 1816 living at Row also in Bewcastle. He was married twice and I am descendant of his first family with Grace Routledge (and the third of my three Routledge 4x great grandparents thus far known to me) and they were married 16 Jun 1763 at Bewcastle. His second marriage which is recounted in The Dodgson Manuscript was to Elizabeth Armstrong 1 Jun 1768 at Lanercost. Elizabeth Armstrong was also descendant of the Oakshaw Routledge family as her mother Mary Routledge was the daughter of John Routledge and Elizabeth Dodgson. Mary was their eldest daughter. John and Elizabeth were married 11 May 1710 at Stepleton, Cumberland and they baptized ten children (eight of them at Bewcastle but the baptism of Mary has not yet been located).  Mary's brother William (baptized at Lanercost) and married to Jane Routledge 14 Nov 1753 at Brampton is also interesting because of their two sons John and Richard Routledge with Richard having purchased the property of my ancestor Thomas at Parkhead before he emigrated to Canada. They are referred to in a letter that George, son of my Thomas, wrote back to Archibald Armstrong in 1839 from London Township, Ontario, Canada. Mary Routledge married Joseph Armstrong 15 Nov 1735 at Bewcastle just to round out the story and their daughter Elizabeth was baptized at Lanercost 3 Jan 1738. George Routledge and Elizabeth baptized six children at Bewcastle. I will discuss the children of George and Grace (George's first wife) when I write about Grace Routledge.

Who was George Routledge baptized 1729.

"Elizabeth Armstrong one of the Female line of the Routledges of the Flatt and second Wife of George Routledge the former owner of Raw and Murrayholm in Bewcastle. (1768. June 1. Geo. Routledge of the parish of Bewcastle, and Eliz: Armstrong of this parish married by Lic. Wit. Thos Armstrong. Marge Routledge [Lanercost par. register]). Elizabeth Armstrong above named whose ancestors farmed Parknook, Bewcastle, and were from the Birkbush Armstrongs parish of Abbey Lanercost Cumberland. She was Cousin to the late Christopher Armstrong owner of Birkbush. (1735. Nov. 15. Marr. Bond at Carlisle. Joseph Armstrong, Flowry Hurst, p Lanercost, bach, age 30, and Mary Routledge, Flatt, p Bewcastle, spinster.) (1739. Jan. 3. Elizabeth dau of Joseph Armstrong of Flowry hurst, bap [Lanercost par. reg.]) She Died at Murrayholm in or about aged years (missing but her age would have been 91 as she died 14 Oct 1829 at Murrayholm).  The said Elizabeth Armstrong informed her Grandson George Routledge who in 1843 is the Owner of Raw, Murrayholm and Bankhead Estates, That her Grandfather John Routledge above named as being the Owner of Flatt in 1700. And a younger Brother named Thomas was Owner of Highonset and an Estate at Flatt were descended from the Routledges of Oakshaw (formerly Akeshaw) and came from the Oakshaw in or about 1700 as before stated and that John Routledge her Grandfather was generally called Old Akeshaw of the Flatt and the Ancestors of the present Owner of the Flatt. (1700. Nov. 18. Will: Routledge Alias Akeshaw buried. [Bewcastle B. T.]) And that Thomas Routledge his younger Brother was Father to John Routledge Owner of Scotchtown formerly of Highonset Bewcastle and Grandfather to Thomas Routledge the only son of John who still holds a life Interest in Scotchtown Estate and now in 1843 residing with his Wife Margaret Little at Garthside parish of Abbey Lanercost Cumberland, and the said above named Thomas Routledge Brother of John Routledge commonly called Akeshaw of the Flatt was also Greatgrandfather on the Maternal side to the above named George Routledge residing on his Estate at Bankhead before named in 1843.

Thomas Routledge who came from Oakshaw to Flatt was Uncle to Grace Routledge the Wife of John Dodgson of Stoneknowe and the said Grace Routledge was Aunt to Elizabeth Armstrong above named Elizabeth Armstrong’s Mother being a Sister to Grace and the Daughters of John Old Akeshaw of the Flatt before named."

From this document Elizabeth has given the relationship of George to the Oakshaw Routledge family as being a great grandson of Thomas Routledge who was brother to John Routledge commonly known as Akeshaw of the Flatt whose father was William Routledge the son of James Routledge who died in 1700 at The Flatt, Bewcastle.

One day I must get hold of the original will as it could give me a little more wording around these references to my 2 4x great grandfathers. But the will captures a moment in time just before George's wife Grace died in 1768 and just after Henry Routledge died in 1765. George at that time was living at Oakshaw. His wife Grace Routledge's parentage is not of Oakshaw directly so he is living there on hios own account as the maternal greatgrandson of Thomas Routledge mentioned above.

The document which I do have  is from the National Archives of the UK and reference C 11/2598/24 and was created in 1721. It is a Bill and answer with plaintiffs George Routledge, yeoman of Raw and the defendant Allan Routledge. There was, according to The Dodgson Manuscript an Allan Routledge in Row in 1630 and checking this particular set of documents the reference is likely to an Indenture dated 1630. can be gleaned on Allen Routledge:

In the Protestation Returns of 1641-42 there is no mention of an Allan Routledge. But there is a George Routledge son of James and Elener of the Ash (Francis is a second son), another George Routledge.

Is this the same James father of Adam, James, Thomas and William but also son of George along with Jerrat and Quintain? On The Protestation Returns just 37 years later there is James and Elener of the Ash with sons Francis and George and could this be James son of James as the father of Francis and George. Putting these Routledge families together is a major task.

Looking at the 1604 Land Survey the following are listed as fathers and sons:

The possibility exists that there are some grandfather/son/grandson relationships in this listing.

There is a very large difference in the numbers of Routledge males in 1604 as compared to the 1630 Indenture. There are 51 names in the 1604 list and only 21 in the 1630 Indenture and only 23 in the Protestation Returns of 1641.

What is known about George Routledge of Row/Raw mentioned in this document is that he appears to have baptized five children at Bewcastle - Isobel, Jane, George (1726-1729), George and Jane. At the time of the writing of the document only Isobel and Jane have been baptized and they are living at Todhills and not at Row. I am looking for a female Oakshaw Routledge connection according to the Dodgson Manuscript and it is that Thomas Routledge baptized 22 Jul 1695 at Bewcastle baptized 7 children at Bewcastle (wife unknown) including a daughter Jane baptized 14 Oct 1737 at Bewcastle. She married a Routledge and their daughter married George Routledge son of George Routledge and Elizabeth Armstrong. Their son George is the individual mentioned as living at Raw in 1843 in The Dodgson Manuscript.

Not a lot of George Routledge that could be referred to in the 1721 document. The 1668 George son of James Routledge of Raw has always been an interesting individual and then 10 Mar 1692 George son of George Routledge junior of Stub and that George potentially could be the father of the George Routledge of Todhills baptized in 1729. There are no George Routledge marriages this early in the Bewcastle Parish Register.

Kirklinton is 8 miles from Lanercost and ten miles from Bewcastle.

Looking for George Routledge marriages has been in the past difficult and continues in that state.  More records coming on line might assist with discovering the line of George and the names of their wives. Either the mother or one of the Grandmothers of George is surnamed Routledge and a daughter/grand daughter of Thomas Routledge of Oakshaw. But George himself is referred to as of Oakshaw in the will so is he the son of George  junior of Stub and is this George in turn a son of Adam of Roanstrees or of James of Raw (otherwise known as Row)?

The 1721 document I mentioned earlier and which I must transcribe one of these days names the wife of George Routledge of Raw as Blanch. The document also names a Robert Routledge and an Andrew Graham. The time periods in the particular item date from 1713 to 1722 at a quick read.

A Blanch Routledge died 23 Feb 1788 at the age of 94 years. No other reference to her in the Bewcastle Parish Register that I have found thus far. There was a Blanch Routledge baptized 3 Jun 1668 daughter of Mr Richard Routledge of Bewcastle.

The document that I need to transcribe though is rather interesting as it lists both the property at Raw and the property at Borderigg where Henry Routledge farmed. Was there any relationship between these two men whose children eventually married. My mother always commented that the Routledge ancestors were cousins. Still to look at is Grace.

Henry is known to be of Oakshaw but not listed as such in the abstract to the will of Archibald Forrester mentioned above but George is listed as of Oakshaw and he is known to be a great grandson of Thomas Routledge brother of John Routledge Laird of The Flatt.

From early childhood I can remember hearing about the Routledge family. My mother's paternal grandmother (deceased before she was born) was Grace Gray daughter of Robert Gray and Elizabeth Mary Ann Routledge or Mary Routledge as she was mostly known although on baptisms also referred to as Mary Ann Routledge. Mary had come to Canada as a child of fourteen with her parents (Thomas Routledge and Elizabeth Routledge), her six brothers (one was her twin Allan and the others Henry, George, William, Thomas and Joseph), her two sisters (Margaret and Grace) and her sister Grace's husband  George Arthur Kennedy and their two sons George and Robert. They are believed to have traveled together (a group of fourteen) but to date I have not yet found any trace of their voyage from Parkhead Farm near Bewcastle, Cumberland to London Township. I do know that they received land from Colonel Thomas Talbot in London Township. But Henry Routledge takes me back another generation. He was the father of Thomas Routledge.

I have a number of Routledge lines and will blog about three of them in this 52 ancestor Challenge. Both Thomas Routledge, son of Henry, and Elizabeth Routledge descended from the same Routledge "clan" in Bewcastle that being the Oakshaw Routledge Family. Thomas and Elizabeth were likely 2nd cousins once removed.

Henry Routledge married Margaret Tweddle (and given the family lore that this family always married cousins I have not yet been able to determine if there were Routledge Tweddle marriages prior to this time) and more on Margaret when it is her turn to be written up in this 52 ancestor Challenge. They were married 3 Oct 1759 at Lanercost (13.5 kilometres from Bewcastle). Henry and Margaret baptized three children (one posthumously after Henry's death):

Henry died suddenly in December 1764 and his widow applied for administration of his estate. The administration papers only mention his wife Margaret and her likely brother Thomas Tweddle or Ringing Hills and a cousin William Armstrong of Askerton. At that time the family was living at Borderigg. Margaret signs as "Margaret Routledg." He has left a large herd of cattle and sheep, horses, farming implements as well as stored grains. No land is mentioned and the furniture mentioned includes parlour, kitchen, upstairs room.

It is still unknown whether Margaret remarried but in 1772 William her eldest son is buried at Bewcastle and possibly Margaret her daughter is buried in 1773 at Lanercost. Thomas married Elizabeth Routledge 23 Jun 1785 at Bewcastle.

Information on Henry Routledge:

He is mentioned in the will of  Archibald Forrester (Cleughside, Bewcastle) probated in 1767 whose wife Grace may have been married earlier to a Routledge as she has a son John Routledge. Also mentioned is Henry Routledge of Borderrigg, deceased, father of three children. Another Henry Routledge is mentioned as the son of Mary Routledge, widow, and she has other children mentioned namely, Adam, Grace, John, Mary and this Mary lives at Crossgreens or Strandsheads.

From the Bewcastle Parish Registers, Henry son of William of Yakeshaw (Oakshaw) was baptized 30 Jul 1720. Also baptized to William of Yakeshaw/Akshaw:

William Routledge married Grissell Routledge in 1704 (day and month missing) and it is unknown if Grissell was a widow.


William is possibly the William Routledge buried at Bewcastle and died 19 Aug 1744 aged 61 years (birth year would be 1683).

Much of the Routledge work has been done by others - Bobbie Jean Hooser has led a Routledge research group with others, Thomas Routledge in England has recreated the Routledge Clan.

I note that the lineage I have back from William is definitely incorrect so will make those changes.

The Dodgson Manuscript does not mention this William Routledge at Oakshaw/Yakeshaw/Akshaw in the same time period as John and Thomas who are mentioned. John and Thomas are sons of William Routledge who resided at Akeshaw or Oakshaw conveyed the Flatt Estate to his son John Routledge in 1700. http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~rutledge/DodgsonManuscript.htm

Since John and Thomas were both likely older than this William and William, at that time, would have been just 17 years old he is just perhaps not mentioned. But one can not assume that he was a son of this William. Later when I look at George Routledge (another of my lines) then I do find this George also of Oakshaw mentioned in the Dodgson Manuscript but that is with respect to his second marriage (not the mother of my Elizabeth Routledge).

The Manor Papers would likely assist with placing this William and that must likely wait for those items to become available online. Although I do do transcription for my cousin Thomas I have not yet had anything that connects this family with the lines mentioned in his work or the Dodgson Manuscript.

In Canada only one of the six brothers married and had children, George Routledge (baptized 30 May 1792 at Bewcastle) married Jane Summers in 1821 in London Township, Middlesex County, Upper Canada. They had nine children and descendants of this family can be found in Canada today. There was another Routledge family living in Westminster Township, Middlesex County but their ascendancy beyond coming up from the USA is unknown to me at this time. But they did not claim kinship with each other to my knowledge.

Why did the Routledge family come to Canada in 1818? I used to ask my mother that and she used to say it was because of the Border Wars but I wonder was it because neither Thomas nor Elizabeth had any siblings left in 1818 (Elizabeth had half siblings) and they had this huge family. Did they know of Thomas Talbot before they came, he gave them a lot of land? Was Thomas in the military, he was a civil engineer? All questions that I have not yet been able to answer. He did not work as an engineer in Canada; he farmed all of the rest of his life. Certainly they came to stay in Canada and be part of the British Empire. That was a strong theme in my family; this concept of Canada just being another part of England. In this generation I notice I do not think of that anymore. I wonder how to keep the heritage of my English ancestry alive for my children and grandchildren. I must create a heritage folder for the future for them so that my history (now just 1/4 of my grandchildren's heritage) is not lost to them as time passes.

That is what I most think about these days is my legacy to my grandchildren in terms of their history. My husband has an extensive tree to pass on (over 80,000) but mine is still just around six thousand although added to that the sixteen thousand French Canadian ancestors/cousins on their father's side!

Working on Henry has made me realize that my connection beyond William can not be substantiated so the lineage for Henry is rather short:

Did a little searching and found in the Catalogue of Howard Family Papers (HNP C239/14) 6 March 1783 a Margaret Routledge of Brampton, widow, and Margaret Routledge, spinster, her daughter being given a mortgage of Wallholme for 80 pounds from William Routledge of Brackenhall, Arthuret, gent. Then same day HNP C239/15 Copy of admittance on the surrender of William Routledge of Margaret Routledge the elder and Margaret Routledge the younger to Wallholme. The documents continue to mention these three Routledges. In 1792 William is deceased and his widow Isabella and daughter Deborah Routledge of Reading are mentioned.

This is the Farm where I last find my ancestor Thomas before coming to Canada and it would appear that he was clear of this property in October 1817. Their actual arrival date is unknown but they appear to still be in Bewcastle in the winter of 1817/1818 coming in the spring or summer as they are known to be in London Township in late Fall of 1818.

Richard and John Routledge are mentioned in a letter that George Routledge wrote to Archibald Armstrong. A blog refers to this letter:

Walholme/Wallholme from a rather ancient map is said to be located in the settlement of Watertown

 which is one of the four townships of Lanercost. The Oakshaw Routledge family appears to be involved with Walholme/Wallholme and who is Margaret Routledge of Brampton, widow and daughter Margaret Routledge. in 1789 Margaret, the daughter, would have been 24 years of age if the sister of Thomas.

A Thomas Routledge of Oakshaw had sons John, Adam and William. This is perhaps Thomas Routledge married to Isobell Nixon 19 Nov 1667 at Bewcastle with daughters Jennett and Mary as well. This is the suspected father of my William but no proof to connect them at this stage. A rather interesting set of documents.
