The parents of Josephte Doutre married to Olivier Gagnon 26 Jun 1844 at Curran were listed as Etienne Doutre and Victoire Lalonde in both the transcribed parish registers and the tabulated generations of the Gagnon family that I found at Library and Archives Canada. I have not seen an original copy of the parish register. However the baptism of Josephte Doutre is most helpful

The baptism of Josephte Doutre verifies all the information that we have for her; born in Plantagenet and the daughter of Etienne D'outre and Victoire Lalonde. This is not that common a name which is also helpful and Plantagenet was a relatively young area. However, it would still be nice to see the original entry. The Death Registration for Josette Gagnon read female, death date 2 Jan 1901 at age 73 on Lot 6 Concession 8 of North Plantagenent, annuitant, widow, Roman Catholic and born at Plantagenet and the informant was Felix Gagnon.
Etienne Doutre and Victoire Lalonde were married 4 Feb 1822 at St Michel in Vaudreuil and it was a second marriage for Etienne Doutre.

This marriage is listed in Tanguay and is the second marriage for Féréol. No father is listed in Tanguay but the marriage lines read

I then located the marriage of Féréole Doutre and Marie Louise Pilon and according to one entry on World Connect this marriage took place 12 Oct 1761 at Point Claire. I located the marriage lines and Farriol Doutre dit LaRose is the name listed and his parents are named as Joseph Doutre and Françoise Soubriqué and Farriol Doutre has signed the register. Joseph and Françoise were named as being of the Diocèse de Perpignan [France]. Hence Féréole Doutre is the emigrant ancestor and Generation 1.
Etienne Doutre married to Victoire Lalonde is Generation 2.
Josephte Doutre married to Olivier Gagnon is Generation 3.
References found online to Féréole Doutre:

Gagnon family
My last research day on the Gagnon family I determined that this research day would be spent collecting references that I have not already acquired in terms of original documents which I will also transcribe.
The eighth generation of this family is Marie Louise Gagnon who was born 25 May 1845 at St Polycarpe and buried 10 May 1936 at Notre Dame Cemetery in Ottawa Ontario. She was married to Léon Matté 15 Oct 1865 at North Plantagenet, Prescott County. Her parents were Olivier Gagnon and Josephte Doutre who were themselves married 26 Jun 1844 at Saint Luc Parish in Curran, Prescott County.
The marriage registration for Marie Louise Gagnon states that she was born at St Polycarpe and I checked the parish registers from her date of birth onwards (to one month) but did not find her baptism at St Polycarpe. Her parents were married in Curran and younger children of this family were baptized at Plantagenet. Josephte Doutre was born at Plantagenet so it isn't a matter of her going home to have her first baby since Plantagenet was her home. I will check to see if the parish registers for Curran/Plantagenet are online on Ancestry. I have checked this earlier and the records prior to 1877 for these two parishes are not on ancestry. I shall put on my to do list for Library and Archives Canada a look at the Parish Registers (published) for this area when next I visit.
I checked out Cornwall - St Colomban Parish Register. I found one interesting set of data for the Confirmation 15 July 1845

Reading through a few more pages of this register just to see the names. That is a rough transcription; I just read it through and typed but it might be of interest to someone. I found the baptism of Priscilla Gagnon:

A quick check with World Connect shows that this is the second wife of Francois Gagnon and that he was the son of Isaac Gagnon and Antoinette Pilote with the parents of Isaac being Joseph Gagnon and Luce Simard. The parents of Joseph Gagnon being Etienne Gagnon and his third wife Marie Madeleine Lavoie. Continuing back I do discover that these two lines are descended from the same couple in France, there are probably too distant in relationship. It was interesting though finding the relationship between these two families.
The Cornwall Parish Register for St Columban did not yield a baptism for Marie Louise Gagnon. Hopefully, I will be into Library and Archives Canada before I work on the Gagnon family again just to see if I can find any documentation for Marie Louise Gagnon. The next research day I will move back to Olivier Gagnon (father of Marie Louise Gagnon) and ensure that I have pulled all of his records. I also need to collect the census records for Marie Louise after marriage but will work on that with the Matté family.

Louis Matte and Josette Benoit families
Another one of my brick walls may have actually fallen with a review of the Prescott Russell County Marriage Book. I would still like to see the original records but the marriage of Léon Matte and Marie Louise Gagnon 15 Oct 1865 in Prescott County lists parents of Léon as Louis Matte and Josette Benoit and Louise as Olivier Gagnon and Lorette Doutre.
Marriage of Olivier Gagnon and Josephte Doutre I did find in the published transcription of Saint Luc at Curran (Prescott County) as 26 Jun 1844 and that has let me trace these lines back.
The marriage of Louis Matte and Josette de la Tour as she is named in the census of 1861 I had not yet located. I also found two other marriages in Prescott County in the same time interval. Louis Matte (parents Louis and Josette Benoit) married to Angélique Monette 26 Nov 1865 and François Benoit(son of André and Marie Reine Decaire) married to P Clement 25 Sep 1866 also at Prescott County.
A quick search of Tanguay did not reveal any connection (not far enough back). I searched Drouin online and found a marriage for Louis Matte and Marie Josephte Benoit dit Vaillancourt 5 Feb 1839. Parents were listed for Louis Matte and Marie Josephte. The marriage was at St Jerome. The birth of Louis Matte (son of this couple) is listed as Ste Scholastique and the birth of Léon Matte is listed as Vaudreuil. An interesting path through these villages does lead one towards Prescott County. The census of 1861 at St André lists Louis Matt and his wife Josepte De Latour with children Louis (b 1840), Nazare (b 1841), Léon (b 1844), Joseph (b 1845), Célina (b 1848), Sarrah Ann (b 1850), Noa (b 1852), Arsinne (b 1855), Julia (b 1857), and Marceline (b 1860). Noé's marriage in 1877 lists his place of birth as Carillon, Québec and his age of 26 years fits with the census (parents Louis and Josephte Matte). Marceline Matte married in 1879 and her age of 19 years fits with parents Louis Matte and Josephine Benoit (parents listed on marriage registration).

This couple fit well into the description of the family on the 1861 census at St André and the resulting marriages that then occur in Prescott County for their children.
Parents of Louis Matte were Augustin Matte and Angélique Daragon. They married 11 Jan 1808 at St Eustache (Augustin Mathes and Marie Judith Daragon). Their parents were listed in the marriage lines.
Parents of Josephte Benoit dit Vaillancourt were Joseph Benoit dit Vaillancourt and Josephte Charette. Still looking for their marriage.
Parents of Augustin Matte were Pierre Mathes and Marie Anne Maisonneuve. They were married 5 Jan 1773 at St Francois de Sales.
Parents of Marie Judith Daragon were Louis Darragon and Marie Jeanne Lauzon. They were married 8 Feb 1779 at Ste Genevieve (Pierrefonds).

Proving the 3x great grandparents
After the last week or so of diversion away from the logical proving in my Legacy file of the ancestors I have returned to working on the 3x great grandparents on the paternal side. I need to find a marriage (verbally verified by email) at the Ontario Archives next time we are there for Léon Matte and Marie Louise Gagnon. I would also like to locate the marriages of their parents. Olivier Gagnon and Josephte Doutre are said to have married at St Luc, Curran, Prescott County, Ontario 26 Jun 1844 but I do not have not yet located the marriage of Joseph Louis Matte and Josephte delaTour. I also do not have the parents of this couple. This is a large brickwall in this line. I do not know for sure the parents of Olivier Gagnon but Josephte Doutre's parents appear to be Etienne Denis Doutre and Victoire Lalonde. Finding the marriage at Curran would answer that question for sure but the baptism of Josephte Doutre born at Plantagenent 5 Jan 1825 and baptized 9 Feb 1825 at Montébello do have these parents listed. The date of birth for Josephte matches the census. For Olivier Gagnon he appears to be born about 1811 from his death registration where his age is given as 88 in 1900.
I will continue working on these proofs and I am now on the Mourier family. A very interesting line as he is the only ancestor to have come from France (or anywhere else for that matter) in the 1800s. He arrived before 1877 and was born in 1845 in France. I haven't found him on the 1871 census yet but will continue checking that. I have not yet found his arrival in the immigration records. The information I have for his parents is from the nosorigines.qc.ca website. This is an excellent website to use I have found thus far. I check every record in Ancestry but having the thoughts is helpful.

Backing up material
I decided to back up my files yesterday and was somewhat surprised to discover that I have, in the last couple of weeks of researching our son-in-law's family downloaded 4 GB of images. Certainly my file system has greatly enlarged with 84 sub-folders as compared to just eight sub-folders a couple of weeks ago. Every folder has a number of images amounting in total to 4.44 GB. I haven't reached a point where I have any text documents in any of these folders - still gathering information from ancestry.
I have a couple of lines that elude me and I expect it will be a lot of parish register reading to find the items. I will go to Library and Archives Canada one of these days to have a look at the Family Histories that have been submitted to them. For the most part I have been working on virgin territory for many of his lines back into the late 1700s. At that point I am picking up work submitted to ancestry or world connect or family webpages that have assisted me. I continue to check out each reference but there is some really good work out there on French Canadian lines.
I also want to go to the Library at Ottawa University to check out their French Canadian historical material. I am still very new to French Canadian Research and do not know all the records available to me to work on his lines. He has many many marriages in Quebec City and Montreal in the mid 1600s. He has many many soldiers in his lines. The latest I discovered the other day was Féréole Doutre who arrived in the later part of the 1750s probably in the troop increase allotment due to the Seven Years War with England in which Québec was ultimately signed over to the English in exchange for colonies in the West Indes.
Féréole married Marie Cecile Forgette dite Despatie 28 Feb 1775 at Terrebonne. Finding Marie Cecile Forgette dite Despatie proved to be a challenge but fortunately the priest recorded the parents of both in the marriage lines.
Parents of Féréole Doutre were Joseph D'Outre and Francisca Sobraques married in France.
Parents of Marie Cecile Forgette dite Despatie were Jean Baptiste Despatie dit Forgette and Marie-Anne Ménard (and this is the first record of the Ménard family in this family grouping). Jean Baptiste and Marie-Anne married 29 Oct 1738 at Ste Famille, Boucherville.
On the marriage registration of Jean Baptiste Despatie dit Forgette and Marie-Anne Ménard the priest recorded the parents of this couple and it is here that the names switched (i.e. Despatie dit Forgette).
Parents of Jean Baptiste Despatie dit Forgette were Jean Baptiste Forgette and Jeanne Beaudouin. Jean Baptiste and Jeanne married 22 Nov 1700 at Repentigny.
Again I was able to extract the names of their parents from the Parish Register.
Parents of Jean Baptiste Forgette were Nicolas Forgette dite Despatie and Marie Madeleine Martin. Nicolas and Marie Madeleine married 6 Feb 1653 at Québec City and their parents were recorded in the Parish Register.
Parents of Nicolas Forgette dite Despatie were Paul Forgette and Nicole Chevalier of Alençon France.
Parents of Marie Madeleine Martin were Abraham Martin and Marguerite Langlois who were also married in France.
This repeats some of my post of the other day but I wanted to go through it all again and I find that easier to do on my blog so that I do not lose any of the details that I have collected. I work on so many lines it is easy to misplace details if I am away from one particular line for a few days or weeks. That was my reason to start blogging although the last couple of months I have blogged less frequently, I will likely go back to my daily blog once again.
Looking at the parents of Jeanne Beaudouin who had married Jean Baptiste Despatie dit Forgette 22 Nov 1700 at Repentigny, the priest listed them as Jean Baudouyn and Charlotte Chauvin (born 5 Apr 1651 Montréal) and they married 27 Nov 1663 at Notre-Dame Montréal.
Parents of Jean Baudouyn were Jean Baudouyn and Jeanne Berthet.
Parents of Charlotte Chauvin were Michel Chauvain and Anne Archambault who had married 27 Jul 1647 at Notre-Dame, Québec. The priest had listed the names of their parents in France.
Michel Chauvain's parents were Gabriel Chauvain and Marie Arouard.
Anne Archambault's parents were Jacques Archambault and Françoise Toros.
Going back now to Marie-Anne Ménard who had married Jean Baptiste Despatie dit Forgette 29 Oct 1738 at Ste Famille Boucherville, the priest listed her parents on the marriage lines.
Parents of Marie-Anne Ménard were Louis Ménard dit Lafontaine and Marie Anne Février who married 12 Dec 1691 at Boucherville. The parents of this couple were listed on the marriage lines.
Parents of Louis Ménard dit Lafontaine were Jacques Ménard dit Lafontaine and Catherine Fovether (sp).
Parents of Marie Anne Février were Kristoffe Février and Marie Martin. I found the second marriage of Kristoffe a couple of years after the birth of Marie Anne Février 22 Jun 1676 at Boucherville. I have not yet found his first marriage with Marie Martin. This is the second Martin in this time frame Marie Madeleine Martin married Nicolas Forgette dite Despatie 6 Feb 1653 at Québec.
The Forgette family had eluded me for some time until I noticed the Despatie dit name and then I was able to quickly move back. I may attempt a look at the French records to see if I am able to learn anything about Joseph Doutre and his wife Francisca Sobraques parents of Féréole Doutre who arrived in New France towards the end of the 1750s as a soldier. He died 29 Mar 1824 at the Hopital général des Soeurs Grises in Montréal.
Again I am looking at the Olivier Gagnon line. He married Josephte Doutre (grand daughter of Féréole Doutre) 26 Jun 1844 at Saint-Luc, Curran, Prescott, Ontario. His death registration states that he was born at Berthier in 1811. I decided to have a look at the registers and found an Olivier Genton baptized there 17 May 1810 with parents Joseph Genton and Elizabeth Moreau. However Gagnon is quite aways from Genton I rather think. I shall have to continue checking. I also noted that in his burial lines the priest has mentioned that he was almost 90 years old when he was buried 13 Mar 1900. This would make the 17 May 1810 date quite interesting. But why would he change his name from Genton to Gagnon. Was it an enumerator error? Would Olivier had spoken with an accent that made Genton sound like Gagnon? Considering they would have been English speaking enumerators in the Plantagenent area this could be a possibility. However, I will keep it on the backburner whilst I hunt out other possibilities. Finding their marriage lines is a high priority since the priest would likely have been French speaking and would have spelled his surname correctly.
I have a couple of lines that elude me and I expect it will be a lot of parish register reading to find the items. I will go to Library and Archives Canada one of these days to have a look at the Family Histories that have been submitted to them. For the most part I have been working on virgin territory for many of his lines back into the late 1700s. At that point I am picking up work submitted to ancestry or world connect or family webpages that have assisted me. I continue to check out each reference but there is some really good work out there on French Canadian lines.
I also want to go to the Library at Ottawa University to check out their French Canadian historical material. I am still very new to French Canadian Research and do not know all the records available to me to work on his lines. He has many many marriages in Quebec City and Montreal in the mid 1600s. He has many many soldiers in his lines. The latest I discovered the other day was Féréole Doutre who arrived in the later part of the 1750s probably in the troop increase allotment due to the Seven Years War with England in which Québec was ultimately signed over to the English in exchange for colonies in the West Indes.
Féréole married Marie Cecile Forgette dite Despatie 28 Feb 1775 at Terrebonne. Finding Marie Cecile Forgette dite Despatie proved to be a challenge but fortunately the priest recorded the parents of both in the marriage lines.
Parents of Féréole Doutre were Joseph D'Outre and Francisca Sobraques married in France.
Parents of Marie Cecile Forgette dite Despatie were Jean Baptiste Despatie dit Forgette and Marie-Anne Ménard (and this is the first record of the Ménard family in this family grouping). Jean Baptiste and Marie-Anne married 29 Oct 1738 at Ste Famille, Boucherville.
On the marriage registration of Jean Baptiste Despatie dit Forgette and Marie-Anne Ménard the priest recorded the parents of this couple and it is here that the names switched (i.e. Despatie dit Forgette).
Parents of Jean Baptiste Despatie dit Forgette were Jean Baptiste Forgette and Jeanne Beaudouin. Jean Baptiste and Jeanne married 22 Nov 1700 at Repentigny.
Again I was able to extract the names of their parents from the Parish Register.
Parents of Jean Baptiste Forgette were Nicolas Forgette dite Despatie and Marie Madeleine Martin. Nicolas and Marie Madeleine married 6 Feb 1653 at Québec City and their parents were recorded in the Parish Register.
Parents of Nicolas Forgette dite Despatie were Paul Forgette and Nicole Chevalier of Alençon France.
Parents of Marie Madeleine Martin were Abraham Martin and Marguerite Langlois who were also married in France.

Doutre family
Still working on the Matte-Gagnon family, I decided to continue working on Josephte Doutre as I was having no luck at all with Olivier Gagnon.
Josephte Doutre is named Josette Doutre on the census. She was born at Plantagenet ON 5 Jan 1825 and baptized 9 Feb 1825 at Montébello (the priest duly recorded that she had been born at Plantagenet which was most helpful). Her parents were Etienne Denis Doutre and Victoire Lalonde from her baptism and the marriage which I obtained online (can not find on ancestry yet) 26 Jun 1844 at Saint Luc, Curran, Prescott County, Ontario. Although I prefer to find the marriage, finding Josephte's baptism which agrees with the online record of Etienne Doutre as her father and Victoire Lalonde as her mother I decided to find their marriage. Etienne Doutre and Victoire Lalonde were married at St Michel, Vaudreuil 4 Feb 1822. She was his second marriage.
Parents of Etienne Doutre: Féréole Doutre and Marie Cecile Forgette dite Despatie who married 28 Feb 1775 at Terrebonne. He was a soldier sent from France in the late 1750s.

Siderfin Family and continuing French Canadian Ancestry
My new correspondent and I have been sharing information. She found a new will (new to me!) at The National Archives (London UK) which has illuminated another error in James Sanders book. Definitely John Siderfin married to Joan Adams was John the son of John Siderfin and Joan Greenslade and not the son of Robert Siderfin and Grace Kent. This makes James Sanders chart completely incorrect as he shows his great grandfather as John Siderfin married to Sarah Clark being the son of John Siderfin and Joan Greenslade. This means that my Elizabeth (Betty) Siderfin (sister to John Siderfin married to Sarah Clark) was aunt to his grandfather Robert Siderfin. That means that Elizabeth Rew (Elizabeth Siderfin's daughter) was first cousin to Robert the father of Elizabeth Siderfin (mother to James Sanders). Mind you Robert was born in 1788 and Elizabeth in 1801. Then Elizabeth (daughter of Robert was born in 1817) and William Robert (my great grandfather) wasn't born until 1837. It could be the generational differences that resulted in this loss of knowledge. Plus my family emigrated to Canada in 1850. But it is still surprising that he incorrectly selected his great great grandparents. Mind you he wrote the book in the early 1900s and his mother died in 1882 and his grandfather Robert Siderfin died in 1859. James grew up at South Molton which is quite aways from the Watchett/Selworthy homes of his Siderfin ancestor. Surprisingly my Elizabeth Rew married John Pincombe at Bishops Nympton just five miles from South Molton but the discrepancy in ages may well have resulted in the mistake. In my family, the name Siderfin was never recorded on this side of the Atlantic so that family line was completely lost.
I continued working on my son-in-law's family. I am proving the 3x great grandparents now on his grandfather's side. I have managed to pull out quite a bit of information - census, CMBs and BMDs but a few still elude me. I spent part of the morning reading the 1851 census at St-Polycarpe, Vaudreuil County but did not find the Matte (Mathieu/Matts), Gagnon (Gagné), D'Outre or De La Tour families that I had hoped to find there. There were LaTour families but not the one I needed. I still need to check the marriage registration for Léon Matte and Marie Louise Gagnon at Prescott in 1865. The Geneaogical Society has transcribed the register and listed parents as Olivier Gagnon/Josephte Beruit (census shows de LaTour) and Joseph Matte/Josephte D'Outre (census shows Louis Matte/Josette Doutre). Reading the original at the Archives of Ontario will be helpful for this marriage I suspect. Because all four families were from the Vaudreuil area originally I had hoped to discover some information on the 1851 census but they may have already been moving to the Prescott area of Ontario by then. I do not find them at Prescott so possibly somewhere in between.
