The will of Eliza Blake has been probated eight days after her son Durrel Blake’s will was probated. George Poole, brother in law of Durrel and son in law of Eliza (he is married to her daughter Jane) has taken probate on both wills.
Eliza was married to Captain John Blake and she was a sister to Anne Sophia Blake whose will was blogged:

25th September 2013. Anne Sophie was married to Captain Michael Anthony Blake of Galway. What is not known is whether or not John husband of Eliza and Michael husband of Anne Sophie were related although both are from Galway. But just to make it very interesting both Eliza (the testatrix) and Anne Sophia were grand daughters of Captain Thomas Philip Durrell (Royal Navy).

This is my first set of wills that pertain to the Galway Blake family and at this point it seems apt to look at one of the published works of the Blake family of Ireland:
Blake Family Records 1300 to 1600 by Martin J Blake
was my first book on the Blake family in Galway. He lists the progenitor of this Blake family as Richard Cadel. Martin Blake is a descendant of the Galway Blake family and had at hand a good deal of original material which he published. His records include a deed of grant in fee to Richard Cadel, surnamed Blake dated 1315. The records were passed down in the senior line of this Blake family down to 1788 when John Blake (15th in eldest lineal descent from Richard Cadel) died without issue. In the will of this John Blake, dated 27 Feb 1787 (probated PCC 21 Feb 1788), devised his estates to his first cousin John Blake (younger son of John Blake’s uncle Mark Blake). By a circuitous path they eventually came into the hands of the author.
Both Captain Michael Anthony Blake and Captain John Blake of Galway were born in the late 1700s. Looking towards the back of the book I can see that the family of Sir Edward Blake (son of William Hume Blake and Catharine Hume) is listed and his ancestry back. This Blake family continues in Canada but this is not my line as my Blake line is from Upper Clatford and before that Andover, Hampshire. The interesting part in this is that the father of William Hume Blake was the Reverend Dominick Edward Blake and that takes us back into the 1700s as Dominick was born in 1771 at Castlegrove, Galway.
I do not find either of these Blake lines in this book on the Galway Blake family but it is a very large family. I have meant to have a look at this published book on the Galway family and the opportunity wasn’t missed at this time. Placing these Blake lines into the Galway Blake family would be rather interesting I suspect. Later in the discussion I discover there is a second volume by Martin Blake and there is a reference that is interesting for this family on page 196.
From a requester on one of the Blake researcher sites: Durell Blake lived at Elkington Hall Somerset and Belmont county Galway was born by 1826. She however thinks that Durell Blake and John Durell Blake are the same person and I am not sure. The will of John is still to come. She has the other son as Daniel. Father Captain John Blake (married to Eliza the testatrix of this will) was of Belmont county Galway as well. Possibly a rather confusing family especially as the Harwood descendants in the US did not know the children of Eliza Durell Blake. Nor did they realize that he was also in the military and a Captain (i.e. Captain John Blake).
Another query on the same site and this is a Francis C Harwood looking for information on Captain Michael Anthony Blake who married Sophia Anne Durell 6 December 1815 at St Martin in the Fields, London. This researcher says that Michael was born in Tuan, county Galway and that his father was John Blake an ancestor of the family of Blake at Belmont county Galway. That would seem to indicate that Michael and John were related perhaps. Was their father John. He found this information in the book I was looking at above on Page 196 so will return to that page and see what is listed by Martin Blake in his book on the Blake family at Galway. The researcher continues with the information that Captain Michael Anthony Blake was in the 13th Somerset Light infantry and first appears in the 1806 Army list as Lt. Blake with a seniority date of 11 Jul 1805. He was promoted to Captain on 10 Jun 1813 and went on half pay 7 Mar 1816 and continued in this capacity until the Army list of 1825. The researcher thinks that he died in 1826 at Waterslade court, Fulham South West, London.
Paraphrased: John, ancestor of the family of Blake of Belmont, county Galway was born 26 Feb 1745 and married Miss Cuffe, sister of James Cuffe (afterwards first Baron Tyrawley), by whom he had a number of descendants some of whom now live in the United States.
The question remains are Michael Anthony Blake and John Blake closely related and descendant of this John Blake who was a son of George Blake and Juliane Lynch. George was born in July 1700 and was the second son of Martin Blake of Moyne.
I have decided to put these trees that Martin Blake has put together into Legacy in order to be able to search and utilize the information more readily. It will be a back burner project that I will work away at “in my spare time :)” but will be a start on the Blake family of Ireland which is very extensive and possibly larger than the Blake family of England. Still to look at are Scotland and Wales (although the Blake family descendant of Richard Cadel would have been originally Welsh as he was).
Curious now about the will of John Durell Blake to come.

Will of John Blake, Tanner, Winslow, Buckinghamshire - The National Archives PROB 11/866/367, probated 22 Jun 1761
John Blake the testator has left a memorable will of six pages naming all of his siblings and some other relatives including nephews. He is a well to do Tanner and does not appear to have a wife or children (none are named).

I have located John Blake the testator in this writeup and he was the fourth child of Thomas Blake and Elizabeth Bennell said to be born in 1718 and died 1761 living at Winslow with the occupation Tanner. This fits with the will as written below.

There is still a home known as Blake House and now Tinkers Corner in Winslow and can be seen on the website mentioned above.
Working backwards Thomas (the father of John testator of the will below) was married to Elizabeth Bennell by licence 2 Dec 1714 in Quainton (she was the daughter of John Bennell and Elizabeth Toms and sister to Edward and George Bennell mentioned in the will below). There is a document showing that he conveyed a tanyard to his son John in 1740 (this being the testator in the will below) on the website: http://www.winslow-history.org.uk/winslow_tanneries.shtm
This Thomas was the son of Thomas and Elizabeth and he had three siblings Elizabeth married to Richard Barton and they had three children: John, Mary and Richard; Anne married to George Stone and John who died as an infant at Winslow. Thomas (son of Thomas) died 1762 at Winslow and left a will dated April 1761 naming his children, grandchildren (noted on website). This will is not available at the National Archives either.
Moving back one more generation looking at Thomas who died 1709 at Winslow and Elizabeth who died 1716 at Winslow. I do have the will of this Thomas and will be transcribing it with the Buckinghamshire wills. He was said to be a local landowner and this probably helps to explain all the property which is mentioned by John in the will below. The website names his brother as George who was married to Maria and they had six children Robert, George, John, Maria, William and Joanna. George and John are traced down one generation.
This website is part of the Winslow History Project and will probably be available for some time. What a marvelous website to set up for Winslow, Buckinghamshire. Of interest, the Blake and Burnham family have been written up. They do request you send any information that you have on people. I will add this Blake family to my Legacy one name Blake study as well as I am able to do so.

I have located John Blake the testator in this writeup and he was the fourth child of Thomas Blake and Elizabeth Bennell said to be born in 1718 and died 1761 living at Winslow with the occupation Tanner. This fits with the will as written below.

Thomas (eldest) born 1715, died 1784 all at Winslow, married to Elizabeth Bradbury 11 Jun 1770 in Great Horwood (late marriage for Thomas and no earlier marriage known, children of this couple Mary born 1771 and died 1810 and Elizabeth born 1774 and d after 1851 and they both married) [Thomas left a will in 1780 proven in 1784 naming his brother William Blake and Thomas Bradbury brother in law as executors http://www.winslow-history.org.uk/winslow_will_blake1784.shtm]

There is still a home known as Blake House and now Tinkers Corner in Winslow and can be seen on the website mentioned above.
Working backwards Thomas (the father of John testator of the will below) was married to Elizabeth Bennell by licence 2 Dec 1714 in Quainton (she was the daughter of John Bennell and Elizabeth Toms and sister to Edward and George Bennell mentioned in the will below). There is a document showing that he conveyed a tanyard to his son John in 1740 (this being the testator in the will below) on the website: http://www.winslow-history.org.uk/winslow_tanneries.shtm
This Thomas was the son of Thomas and Elizabeth and he had three siblings Elizabeth married to Richard Barton and they had three children: John, Mary and Richard; Anne married to George Stone and John who died as an infant at Winslow. Thomas (son of Thomas) died 1762 at Winslow and left a will dated April 1761 naming his children, grandchildren (noted on website). This will is not available at the National Archives either.
Moving back one more generation looking at Thomas who died 1709 at Winslow and Elizabeth who died 1716 at Winslow. I do have the will of this Thomas and will be transcribing it with the Buckinghamshire wills. He was said to be a local landowner and this probably helps to explain all the property which is mentioned by John in the will below. The website names his brother as George who was married to Maria and they had six children Robert, George, John, Maria, William and Joanna. George and John are traced down one generation.
This website is part of the Winslow History Project and will probably be available for some time. What a marvelous website to set up for Winslow, Buckinghamshire. Of interest, the Blake and Burnham family have been written up. They do request you send any information that you have on people. Will of Hester Blake, widow, Winton - The National Archives, PROB 11/396/432, probated 5 Oct 1689
Hester Blake of Winton (Winchester) Southampton has left her will naming her only son John as Executor. Since she refers primarily to members of her family with the surname Taylor then perhaps she was Hester Taylor.
There is one interesting baptism 2 Jun 1668 for a John Blake son of Robert Blake and Esther at Devizes St Mary in Wiltshire on Find my Past. Hester is not that common a name so shall make note of that particular baptism here. I did not however locate a marriage with a Robert Blake between 1650 and 1668 in Wiltshire or Hampshire. Nor was there a burial for a Robert Blake that would fit into this area and time frame. No burials for Hester Blake either in 1689 +/- 1 year.
Looking at the Taylor family Mrs. Joane Taylor in Burnham Wiltshire is mentioned as aunt and Mr. William Taylor as uncle in Eaton Wiltshire with three children. Hester Taylor (daughter of William) is less than 21 years in 1689 but did not locate a baptism for her.
Having just done a will for a Hester Blake, spinster, who died at Winchester in 1781 it does raise the question as to whether this Hester who names a sister Mary who married in 1725 might be a descendant of the John Blake (son of Hester Blake widow). Possibly the family mentioned in Hester Blake's will of 1781 of Hester, Mary and Martha and a brother who has died already are the children of John Blake son of Hester Blake widow. He would have been 21 years of age in 1689 and his daughter Mary was probably born in the early 1700s along with Martha who was married in 1727. In the Burials collection on Find my past there is a Martha Soley buried at Southampton All Saints 14 Mar 1798 at the age of 95 years putting her baptism possibly around 1703. Mary Imber was buried 23 Apr 1783 at Winchester St Thomas but no age given.
It would certainly be nice to link these wills together and perhaps I will be able to find more clues to do so. Looking ahead at the wills and I discover that one of the last wills that I have to transcribe is for the father of Martha, Mary and Hester and his wife is named as Martha. A nice linking detail although would still need to prove that this Hester Blake widow is this John's mother.

Will of Thomas Blake of Wedmore, Somerset (images from the National Archive #32
Carrying on with the wills that I photographed at Kew when we were there in October 2010. The will of Thomas Blake at Wedmoore in 1581 is a treasure if you are interested in the names of the people who lived in the area around Wedmoore and in Wedmoore itself. Some of the nearby villages include Mark, Weare, Eastbrente, Southbrente, Glastonbury, Huntspill, Lympsham, Burnham, and Heath House. The greatest portion of the will is a list of the individuals who owe money to Thomas Blake. Is he perhaps a store keeper as well as a farmer? He describes himself as a yeoman in the will. He and his wife Isabell have four children: Thomas, John, Luce and Elizabeth. He has a brother John. At the time of the Protestation Returns in 1641-42 there is a John Blake at Kingston St Mary who could possibly be one of the sons of this Thomas as land was left to the eldest son Thomas at Kingston St Mary. This is the same area of Somerset as Humphrey Blake was living in up to the mid 1500s but Overstowey about 17 miles away and closer to Devon. There was also a Blake family in Devon that I have only just started to look at.
I decided to do the wills that remain in Somerset that I have acquired in order of number although the number is not significant; it just happens that this is listed as the oldest will in Somerset at the National Archives Documents on line site.
