The testator, Humphrey Blake, is of Over Stowey and one of the collateral lines related to Admiral Robert Blake. He was baptized possibly 24 Nov 1611 at Over Stowey (information from the Portbury Admiral Blake website (http://www.portbury-hundred.co.uk/admiralreport.htm) . The parish registers of Overstowey no longer exist in this earlier time period although there are some bishops transcripts and perhaps the dates are from there. Eventually I hope to have a look at them.
Humphrey, the testator, was the son of Humphrey Blake and Elizabeth Giles but again the parish registers do not give their marriage date at Over Stowey if they were married there. He was one of five children namely:
1. John died 1696 (by the above website) and married to Elizabeth
2. Humphrey baptized 24 Nov 1611 (by the above website), married to Elizabeth Upton and buried 14 Jun 1665 at Aisholt, Somerset (Elizabeth was buried 5 Apr 1683 at Aisholt)
3. Arthur baptized June 1619 at Over Stowey, married to Jane Tomms and his will was blogged: http://kippeeb.blogspot.ca/2013/09/will-of-arthur-blake-gentleman-of.html and he died before 16 Jun 1653 date of probate of his will. Arthur and Jane had two children Elizabeth and Mary both under 21 in 1653. Brother of the present testator.
4. Richard baptized 6 Dec 1629 at Over Stowey and died by 1658 (according to the website of portbury-hundred above) as his brother Humphrey mentions that he has died at the time of the writing of his will as further proof.
5. Elizabeth born circa 1621 at Over Stowey and buried 10 May 1621 at Over Stowey
Humphrey, the testator, was married to Elizabeth Upton but the earliest marriages begin in 1654 with Phillimore’s Marriage Registers. Their first child was likely born before 1640 so not available online. Elizabeth Blake does appear on the burial registers as a widow buried 5 Apr 1683 but no age given. Humphrey and Elizabeth had nine children but the baptismal registers do not begin until 1680.
1. Humphrey Blake buried 27 Sep 1664 at Aisholt
2. Catherine Blake baptized 1 Jun 1640 (portbury-admiralblake site), possibly dead by 1664 as not mentioned in will
3. John (mentioned in will below) baptized 17 Nov 1641 and dead by 1696 and married to Elizabeth Farthing (mentioned in will below) 1 Jan 1663 and they had four children: Dorothy (mentioned in will below), Dorothy Humphrey, John and Betty (portbury-admiralblake site)
4. (Reverend) Nathaniel (mentioned in will below) baptized Jun 1645 at Plainfield, Over Stowey (portbury-admiralblake site), married to Sarah Blanchflower 7 Feb 1672 at Fitzhead, Somerset and buried 17 Nov 1705 at Aisholt. They had three children Nathaniel died young, John died young and Katherine baptized 14 Mar 1688 at Aisholt.
5. Arthur (mentioned in will below) baptized 14 Jun 1650 (portbury admiral blake site) children are also listed on this site namely Arthur, Edmund, Nathaniel and Katherine.
6. Roger (mentioned in will below) circa born 1651 and married to Susannah Taylor circa 1672 and buried 24 Jul 1702 at Aisholt and he was the common ancestor of Hester Blake and Robert Blake mentioned in the will of Hester Blake blogged a few days ago. They had 11 children and the first entry in the extant parish registers at Aisholt have Sarah Blake daughter of Roger and Susanna baptized 12 Apr 1680 lending credence to the thought that the older children may have also been baptized at Aisholt.
7. Elizabeth (mentioned in will below) baptized 5 Jun 1653 (portbury admiralblake site); buried 28 Aug 1671 at Aisholt
8. Robert (mentioned in the will of his father)
9. Mary (mentioned in the will of his father)
Always nice to be able to locate family lines for the testators in these wills for the Blake family of Somerset. There are a huge number of collateral lines to Admiral Robert Blake.
As mentioned the testator Humphrey was the son of Humphrey Blake and Elizabeth Giles. This Humphrey was then the son of Humphrey Blake and Agnus/Ann James who married at Over Stowey 23 Oct 1578 and then this Humphrey son of John Blake the elder who was a brother to Robert Blake the grandfather of Admiral Robert Blake.
Admiral Robert Blake [101] is the 2nd cousin once removed of Humphry-77 the elder Blake [131]

Will of Elizabeth Blake - National Archives PROB 11/794/239, probated 12 May 1752
This will is written by the second wife of William Blake Mercer of Christchurch whose will was probated 8 Mar 1745. I have transcribed his will earlier in the year:
http://kippeeb.blogspot.ca/2012/05/will-of-william-blake-mercer-of.html
Primarily this will is about the second family of William Blake married to Elizabeth Hook. Elizabeth Blake identifies her father as William Hook deceased and that he owned a property called Little Kingston, Isle of Wight. Elizabeth has a sister Margaret Williams widow of Christchurch. She has the two daughters mentioned in William's will Hook (baptized 8 Dec 1727 at Christchurch (C14658-1 Family Search) (married to Francis Hackman (24 May 1750 at Christchurch (M14658-1 Family Search)) and Sarah (unmarried).
The executors of this will are Edward Hooper and James Worsley. David Worsley was one of the Executors of William's will but no relationship is known between these two men. However, one of Elizabeth's sisters is married to (unknown) Worsley (and James Worsley is said to be her cousin). Another sister was Grissel Hook mentioned in the will.
Also mentioned is the daughter of William Blake from his first marriage Elizabeth Dorothy Blake (right heir if Sarah and Hook die without heirs) and she is married to her first cousin John Garret Blake. Elizabeth's brother William Hook is also mentioned. Not a lot of new information on this Blake line (but new information on the Hook family for anyone interested) which is known to include siblings for William (husband of Elizabeth Blake testator) of Stephen (children: Stephen, Richard, Mary, Sarah, Dorathe, and perhaps grandchildren: Katherin and Stephen), John (father of John Garrett Blake) and his sister Dorathey married to Nicholas Slade.

Will of John Blake, Gentleman of Christchurch, Hampshire, National Archives PROB 11/541 Image Reference 212/211, probated 21 Aug 1714
This will precedes yesterday's will in that John Blake is the father of William Blake testator which appears in yesterday's blog. This will be the last Blake will for as much as a couple of weeks as I must return to some early Routledge documents that I have on hand. My cousin Thomas Routledge is writing a book and I had promised to transcribe some documents for him. A couple of months ago I became very very busy and it slipped my mind but Thomas has reminded me! Therefore I will be back to the Routledge family of Eskdale Ward Cumberland England working on about a dozen documents which I will post here as well.
The Blake family of Christ Church does appear in the Visitations. William Blake who died in 1606 lived at Hubborn, Hampshire and he had a son John who also lived at Hubborn and in 1660 was 64 years of age (hence born circa 1596 and would have been ten years old when his father died). This John was married to Susanna Emberley (daughter of Nicholas Emberley of Christchurch) and they had at least two children: John b c 1630 and Susanna married to Henry Hopkins (Burgess of the Burough of Christ Church). John was was a Captain of Foot under the command of Colonel Fleming (and in 1686 Mayor of Christ Church) married Sarah Preston (daughter of Henry Preston of Burton, Christ Church). John and Sarah had at least one child also John who lived at Legore, Parish of Milton, Hampshire and he was approximately 33 years of age in 1686 (b c 1653) and married to Dorothy Blake (daughter and sole heir of Stephen Blake of Legore, Hampshire). They had five children Dorothy b c 1673, John b c 1674, Sarah b c 1681, Stephen b c 1683, and William b c 1685 (died 20 Dec 1744). The Visitation has been signed by John Blake in 1686 at the Kings Arms in Lindhurst 25 Jul 1686. This John is the Testator in this will. Probate was given to his wife Dorothy and sons Stephen and William although I have not yet transcribed the Probate.
Dorothy (wife of John) was also a Blake; daughter of Stephen Blake of Legore, Milton, Hampshire (near Christ Church) but I have not yet been able to determine the lineage of Stephen Blake.
I wonder which Blake family; are they descendant of the Wiltshire Blake family? William was a Mercer but it was a time when the most profit lay in cloth so I can not say that just because he was a Mercer he might be related to the Andover Blake family. Other than Richard Blake at Andover and his line, the rest were gentlemen farmers. Hubborn is an area in Christ Church looking at the Post Office Directory for the Borough of Southampton by William Cooper (1834), Southampton: Fletcher, Forbes and Fletcher. Interesting that the furtherest back William Blake died in 1606 the same year as William Blake at Eastontown. However, William at Eastontown did not have a son John.
In the Blog on Henry Blake's will http://kippeeb.blogspot.ca/2011/02/henry-blake-of-christchurch-and-his.html written 18 Feb 2011, there is some information on Hubborn. The Hampshire Record Office does hold a number of wills for Blake members at Hubborn including the will of John Blake husbandman at Hubborn who left his will in 1613, William Blake husbandman leaving a will in 1585. The Blake family at Andover does not really appear at Andover until the early 1500s and the earliest wills may be Richard Blake who left a will in 1522 naming his brother Thomas and his wife Executor (this is a will that I need to order from Hampshire Record Office). Jone Blake left a will in 1527 naming her children Robert, Nicholas and Elizabeth but neglected to name her husband at Andover. I am wondering if Richard is the husband of Jone since he is at Enham.
Back to Christchurch and Robert Blake leaves his will in 1547 naming his sons Richard (eldest and executor), William, Thomas the elder, Thomas the younger and Elizabeth. Is this the family on the Visitation? This keeps reminding me that I need to transcribe the 30 odd Wiltshire Blake wills that I have on hand. Personally my feeling is that the Christchurch family is descendant of the Calne Wiltshire Blake family.
Once again the yDNA study of the Blake family is an interesting way to look at your Blake line. Movement in the British Isles as people migrated from one area to another for various reasons happened early as well as now. For instance, my great grandparents Blake were from two different counties (Blake from Upper Clatford Hampshire and Knight from Turnworth Dorset). yDNA tells you about your deep ancestry. My line at Upper Clatford testing my brother is I2a2b which is said to be a very ancient British Isles haplogroup. My father was born at Eastleigh Hampshire (near Southampton) in 1904 with his father born at Upper Clatford in 1875.

Will of William Blake, Mercer of Christchurch, Hampshire, National Archives PROB 11/738 Image Reference 196/202, probated 8 Mar 1745
I will be posting a will today for my Blake one name study and then a will tomorrow for my one name Blake study. The next items will then be for the Routledge papers that my cousin asked me to transcribe. It will likely be a couple of weeks before I return once again to the Hampshire Blake wills. In the meantime if Blake is an interest of yours please consider doing yDNA testing to help discover all the Blake lines of the Isles. The yDNA project at FT DNA can be seen here:

All of the originals of these wills are available for download on the National Archives website for the extremely reasonable price of £3.50. Once you discover your ancestor on a will it is wonderful to have a copy of that will.
William Blake of Christchurch was married twice with his second wife being Elizabeth Hook and they were married 24 May 1719 at Christchurch. Hook, one of their daughters, was baptized 8 Dec 1727 at Christchurch.
Elizabeth Dorothy Blake (daughter from his first marriage) was baptized 5 Jun 1711 at Christchurch. Elizabeth Dorothy Blake married her cousin John Garrett Blake 1 Oct 1728 at Christchurch. Their first child William was baptized 5 Dec 1729 at Christchurch and their second child was Dorothy for whom I could not locate a baptism yet.
In his Will, William mentions his siblings and their children which is always a very nice linking document to have. He has brothers Stephen Blake and John Blake (deceased) and sister Dorothy Slade (deceased). His father was Johannis Blake, his mother Dorothea and his will is the next one to be transcribed.
Stephen his brother has children baptized at Christchurch: Stephen baptized 23 Apr 1710, Richard baptized 29 Sep 1713, Mary baptized 12 Oct 1715, Sarah baptized 27 Sep 1717, Dorathe baptized 4 Nov 1719. Possibly his son Stephen has children baptized at Christchurch: Katherin baptized 22 Feb 1733 and Stephen baptized 19 Sep 1735.
John his brother is the father of John Garrett Blake who married William's eldest daughter Elizabeth Dorothy Blake. John's daughter Jane married (unknown) Boorne (sp).
His sister Dorathey Blake married Nicholas Slade on 26 Dec 1694 at Christchurch. Their daughter Sarah was baptized 3 Dec 1696 at Christchurch and she married Thomas Janes 13 May 1719 at Christchurch. Their son Nicholas (not mentioned in this will) was baptized 14 Jan 1692 and 31 Jan 1701 (likely the first Nicholas died, Nicholas is mentioned in his grandfather's will).

Will of John Blake, Gentleman of Portsea, National Archives PROB 11/1676, Image Reference 38/39, probated 8 Oct 1823
It isn't often that I find a family tree for Blake that fits into one of the wills that I am looking at. This particular one is on World Connect but not updated since 17 May 2001 and the contact person is Merrilynjminster@hotmail.com. She is likely descended from the marriage of Elisabeth Blake and Joseph Tickner since that is the only line traced down further in this family grouping. Joseph and Elizabeth were married 20 Oct 1813 at St Mary Parish Church in Portsea. They had 12 children and again only one child is traced down being Emma Tickner baptized 23 May 1833 at St Mary Parish Church in Portsea. Emma married William Willmott Hatherly 27 Jun 1852 at St Mary Parish Church in Portsea and this couple had five children all born in New South Wales Australia. Only their daughter Emma Hatherly born 29 Oct 1857 in Newtown, New South Wales is traced down and her daughter was named Emily Maud Hatherly and born 8 Dec 1877 in Sydney New South Wales. Emily married Joseph George Minter 2 May 1895 in Waterloo New South Wales and they had eight children born between 1895 and 1912. None of these children are traced down by the author Merrilyn J Minter. Six of the children were sons.
Elizabeth Blake's parents are identified in this information at World Connect as John Blake (baptized 12 Dec 1761 in Portsmouth Hampshire England) and Rebecca Tilberry who were themselves married 14 Jan 1787 in Portsea (also located this marriage on Find my Past).
Children of the marriage of John Blake and Rebecca Tilberry from World Connect (all are baptized at St Mary Parish Church Portsea unless indicated otherwise):
John Blake baptized 29 Jul 1787; buried 30 Jan 1798
Thomas Blake baptized 28 Jun 1789 (number of burials at Portsea for Thomas Blake)
Mary Blake baptized 1 May 1791
Elisabeth Blake baptized 28 Sep 1794
Ann Blake baptized 12 Jun 1796
John Blake baptized 8 Jul 1798
Rebecca Blake baptized 4 Feb 1800 in Portsmouth
William Blake baptized 27 Aug 1802 in Portsmouth
Rebecca Blake baptized 9 Jan 1803
William Blake baptized 9 Jan 1803
Martha Blake baptized 20 May 1804
I must admit to being somewhat ambivalent about the Portsmouth entries although it does leave a large gap otherwise between John in 1798 and William in 1803. I did find all of these records on Find My Past along with the bolded entries added to the above chart which I found on World Connect. When I research on William baptized 9 Jan 1803 at Portsea he was born 31 Jul 1802 and Rebecca was born 5 Jan 1800 and baptized 9 Jan 1803 at Portsea. Were they perhaps baptized first in Portsmouth for some reason and then rebaptized at Portsea which is rather unusual in the Anglican Church.
On Find My Past there is a John (baptized 12 Dec 1761) and the son of Thomas and Elizabeth Blake published by the Hampshire Genealogical Society. Just to give a little credence to this possibly being the correct John I also found the second page of a will by James Blake PROB 11/1261 and proved 1 Jun 1795 which is only the second page but rather interesting and the text is below:
"same unto my beloved father Thomas Blake living at the sign of the Rainbow, St Georges Square in the town of Portsea in the County of Hampshire and in default thereof to my brother John Blake of the town and County aforesaid. And I do hereby nominate and appoint my father and brother of the town and County aforesaid executors of this my last Will and Testament hereby revoking all former and other Wills Testaments and Deeds of Gifts by me at any time heretofore made and I do ordain and ratify these presents to stand and be for and as my only last Will and Testament. In witness whereof to this my said Will I have set my hand and seal the tenth day of June in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and ninety three and in the thirty third year of the Reign of His Majesty King George the Third over Great Britain &c. Jas Blake.
Signed sealed published and declared in the presence of RM Sutton, Captain; H Quinton, Master
This Will was proved at London the first day of June in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and ninety five before the Right Honorable Sir William Wynne, Knight, Doctor of Laws, Master Keeper or Commissary of the Prerogative Court of Canterbury lawfully constituted by the oaths of Thomas Blake the father and John Blake the brother of the deceased and the executors named in the said Will to whom administration was granted of all and singular the goods chattels and credits of the said deceased having been first sworn by Commission duly to administer

This is not one of the wills that I photographed so will have to wait to see the first page another time. Interesting that John did name his second son Thomas (first was named John). He did not, however, name a son James. There is a James baptized 23 Mar 1756 at Portsea St Mary with father Thomas Blake (mother not identified) on Find My Past. There isn't a John Blake baptized at Portsea son of Thomas on Find My Past in the correct time interval. Since his will was probated in 1823 he is too early for the census and civil registration. However the burial registration 30 Jul 1823 for John Blake gives his age as 63 years so a birth circa 1760 (buried at St Mary Parish Portsea). Given the two baptisms at Portsmouth in John and Rebecca's family the baptism of John himself at Portsmouth is reasonable and he does name his second daughter Elizabeth which is the name of the mother identified on the baptism of John Blake son of Thomas and Elizabeth Blake at Portsmouth 12 Dec 1761. He could have been in his 63rd year rather than 63 years of age. There is a Rebecca Blake buried 8 Apr 1816 at Portsea (51 years of age).
There were nine children born to John and Rebeckah Blake and by the will John, William, Mary, Elizabeth, Ann, Rebeckah and Martha survived to adulthood with Martha being just 19 when the will was written and probated. The first John and Thomas were both dead at the time of writing the will unless John didn't mention Thomas for some reason.
If Thomas is the father of John then he would have been born around 1725 to 1740 and according to the IGI there are two baptisms at St Marys Parish Church Portsea - Thomas baptized 21 Dec 1735 and son of Thomas and Thomas baptized 8 Jul 1739 at Saint Marys Portsea with father Richard. Both entries are from the parish register of Saint Marys according to the IGI. On Find My Past (records of baptism are not yet available for Portsea but marriages are available from 1752 on) Thomas Blake widower married Jane Morlen widow 13 May 1762. There are burials for Elizabeth Blake in 1759 and 1760 at Portsea. A good start on this family at Portsea and will see what other wills yield for information.

There are burials for Elizabeth Blake in 1759 and 1760 at Portsea. A good start on this family at Portsea and will see what other wills yield for information.
