Marie Louise Quesnel married François Deschatelets 26 Apr 1870 at St Casimir, Ripon.
Her parents were identified in the marriage lines as Benjamin Quesnel and Marie St Denis who were themselves married 22 Apr 1833 at Rigaud.

Not finding this exact name for the wife of Antoine Quesnel I decided to pull a couple of extra documents just to ensure that I had the correct marriage of Antoine Quesnel.The burial of Antoine Quesnel names his wife as Marguerite Roquebrun. Between the marriage and the burial certificates it would appear that the correct person has been located.

This marriage is identified in Tanguay and the parents of Antoine named as Michel Antoine Quesnel and Angélique Gavillon who were themselves married 9 Apr 1736 at Bout de l'ile. The parents of Michel Antoine Quesnel were Jean Baptiste Quesnel and Marie Gourdon who were married 20 Jan 1705 at Lachine. The parents of Jean Baptiste Quesnel were Olivier Quesnel and Catherine Prudhomme who were married 15 Jan 1680 at Montréal. Olivier was the emigrant ancestor (born in France) and hence Generation 1.
Jean Baptiste Quesnel married to Marie Gourdon is Generation 2.
Michel Antoine Quesnel married to Angélique Gavillon is Generation 3.
Antoine Quesnelle married to Elizabeth Séguin is Generation 4.
Antoine Quesnelle married to Marguerite Laroch is Generation 5.
Benjamin Daniel Quesnel married to Marie St Denis is Generation 6.
Marie Louise Quesnel married to François Deschatelets is Generation 7.

Grégoire and Séguin dit Ladéroute families
Antoine Grégoire married Rosa de Lima Ségin dit Ladéroute 30 Aug 1869 at the Basilica de Notre Dame in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. I wish it had been that simple to discover the full name of the bride as Rosa was listed as Rosa de Lima Séguin. Parents of Antoine were Nicholas Joseph Grégoire and Marie Potvin and for Rosa her parents were Antoine Séguin and Marie Groux. The witnesses at this marriage were Nicholas Grégoire and Toussaint Groux. Trying to find the parents of this couple proved to be a formidable task which I related earlier in my blog. My reason for coming back to these two family lines is organization and tidying up details and to ensure that indeed I did find the correct line.
Working on the Grégoire family proved to be an interesting tour through early New France families and eventually failing to connect to them discovering the answer to my search lay in the census and reading the early records of a particular village. Although the Grégoire family were not 1600s arrivals they were indeed here before the 1750s but, as I was to discover, at Montréal. Their son Homère would marry Rosalie Tremblay 6 Apr 1902 at Embrun and it was this relationship that helped me in the long run. The Tremblay family being so thoroughly researched I was able to locate the marriage of Homère and Rosalie and from there the parents full names which then assisted me greatly with the Séguin family. French Canadian genealogy is marvelous and fits together so neatly that as soon as you go astray you will often get warning signs that something is wrong because it just doesn't match the available files. It usually happens quite quickly which is excellent.
What I was trying to find was the location of the Grégoire family before they moved to Russell Twp in Ontario. The usual route was often up from Montréal via the south shore, across the St Lawrence and into the Québec townships which ran along with the Ontario townships in Eastern Ontario but on the west side of the Ottawa River. I had found Nicholas Grégoire on the 1852 census quite early on but the name of the wife was Marguerite Emare. Antoine was there, right age and fitted perfectly. Nicholas was born at Chateauguay and Antoine at Ste-Martine (Marguerite was born at [St] Constant.) I was looking for Marie Potvin however as the wife of Nicholas. I then trekked through the Grégoire records but discovered that they just didn't fit this family. Returning to the census I decided to look at the parish registers for the baptism of Antoine (I was working primarily with marriages as I was trying to quickly prepare a chart for the wedding - since I couldn't really prove the Grégoire line it basically ended at Nicholas at the time). However, looking at the baptisms I discovered that Antoine was baptized at Ste Martine and his parents were listed as Nicholas Grégoire and Marguerite Emard. The census had been perfectly accurate. I was still new to searching at the time and dit names were still a mystery to me. I moved now to find the marriage of Nicholas and Marguerite and it was at St Constant 6 Feb 1837.

I shall work on the transcription but amazingly I had discovered that I did have the correct census for Antoine and back to his parents Nicholas Grégoire and Marguerite Emard. I now had several spelling of Marguerite's surnames which I will discuss later.
Continuing looking at the Grégoire family I now needed the marriage of Nicolas Grégoire and Geneviève Patenaude and they had married at St Constant 12 Jan 1807. The priest recorded in the register

I was then able to locate the marriage of Nicolas Grégoire and Thérèse Decoste at St Constant 20 Aug 1796. The parents of Nicolas Grégoire were listed as Nicolas Grégoire and Catherine Guerin. Locating their marriage readily at Notre Dame de la Prairie de la Madeleine and they were married 20 Jul 1772. Finding this marriage then showed me that Nicolas was the emigrant as his parents were still living in France. His parents were Nicolas Grégoire and Marie-Anne Martin. The register lists him as a resident of the parish. This family is not listed in Tanguay.
When I was researching this family earlier I had tried to discover if Nicolas was a soldier coming out from France before 1759 but was unable to ascertain that. I had discovered a new set of webpages which lists 214 articles from "Le journal citoyen du Québec pour la francophonie. " Nicolas (his son) was part of a group of voyageurs who traveled down the Mississippi in pursuit of trading opportunities. He is only mentioned the one time in the story so any further part by him is unknown. But what of Nicolas, the father, why is he listed just as a resident? Was he an ex-soldier? He would have been older when he married if he had been a soldier in the 1750s. He died in 1789 at Chateauguay (17 years of marriage). The burial lines state his age as 50 years giving him a possible date of birth in 1739 so that he would have been old enough to have served as a soldier. Perhaps the answer lies in looking at Emigration which I have not yet done. That will be one of my projects for the next time that I look at the Grégoire family
The Séguin family will also have to wait until the next time as I have managed to use up all my allotted time today for these families.
Separating the file for the Grégoire family then Nicolas (b c 1739) is Generation 1, Nicolas (b 1773) is Generation 2, Nicolas Joseph (b 1809) is Generation 3, Antoine is Generation 4 and Homère is Generation 5 and two more generations completes this line to the present. Folders created and images sorted.

Bertrand Family
The Bertrand family of French Canadian descent is very well published. Initially I was unable to attach Antoinette to her correct Bertrand family line. I still have not found the marriage registration for Antoinette Bertrand and Marius Mourier in 1877 at Hull Québec. Today, I shall again search out the death registration on Ancestry to see if I am able to locate one for Antoinette Bertrand now that 1936 is available.The death registration for Marius Mourier gives the name of his father as Jean Calixte Mourier. Her father is listed as Julien Bertrand and her mother as Antoinette Séguin. Since I am unable to find the marriage registration thus far, finding her parents on the death registration is the next best thing (and she is identified correctly as the widow of Marius Mourier). The informant was her younger daughter Marie Louise Proulx.
This verification is excellent as the published source that I found listed her parents as Julien Vital Bertrand and Antoinette Séguin.
Again I will place the Bertrand family into folders and thus far I only have the last two generations with the pertinent documents. One project for this family will be to pull all the documents available back to the emigrant ancestor. In this case, the emigrant ancestor was Jean Bertrand who married Marie Charlotte Brard 23 Sep 1697 at Notre-Dame, Montréal. Looking at Tanguay, (although I have found a few errors in Tanguay I still consider this to be the best reference tool in terms of looking at an entire family of an emigrant) there are a number of Jean Bertrand marriages and according to the published records bringing us down to Julien Vital Bertrand we would select their son Jacques who married Marie Louise Dumouchel 19 Sep 1729 at Notre Dame, Montréal. Their son Michel Louis married Marie Josephte Boyer dit St-Germain 10 Aug 1778 at Saint Michel, Vaudreuil. Their son Antoine married Marie Josephte Cholet 11 Jan 1802 at Saint Michel, Vaudreuil. Julien Vital was a son of this couple. Tanguay only takes us to Michel Louis being identified as the son of Jacques Bertrand married to Marie Louise Dumouchel. but it is a good starting point. I need to then locate the marriage of Julien Vital Bertrand and Anoinette Séguin which I did by writing to a rootsweb site which promised lookups of the Registers at St Jean Baptiste, L'Orignal, Prescott, Ontario. This is also on the nosorigines website. I also found on WorldConnect

The parents of Julien Vital Bertrand are named as Antoine Bertrand and Marie Josephte Cholet. It would appear that Julien Vital Bertrand has moved on from Vaudreuil where he was born and from Rigaud where his mother was buried in 1836 to L'Original. . This is a distance of approximately 20 kilometres.

L'Orignal is a village and former municipality, now part of Champlain Township in eastern Ontario, Canada. It likely took its name from its location on the Ottawa River once known as Pointe à l'Orignal (French for "Moose Point"), where moose crossed the river.
The marriage of Antoine Bertrand and Marie Josephte Cholet was celebrated 11 Jan 1802 at St Michel, Vaudreuil. I did find the scan of their marriage on ancestry and downloaded a copy to my files. However, Tanguay does not have this marriage so I must work my way back another generation to Michel Louis Bertrand and Marie Josephte Boyer dit St Germain who married 10 Aug 1778 at St Michel, Vaudreuil according to the published information on this family. Both Louis Michel and Marie Josephte appear to be widowed at the time of their marriage. One notes from given baptismal records that Louis Michel would have been 41 years of age and Marie Josephte 37 years of age. In order to find the parents of Luis Michel I need to find his first marriage. His first wife was Marie Charlotte Bertrand and they married 10 June 1763 at LaPrairie. Louis Michel parents were recorded as Jacques Bertrand and Marie Louise Dumouchelle. Tanguay records their marriage as 19 Sep 1729 at Montréal which I shall verify on my next study day for the Bertrand family. So Jean is the first generation, Jacques is the second generation, Louis Michel is the third generation, Antoine is the fourth generation, Julien Vital is the fifth generation and Antoinette is the sixth generation. I can now separate the files into folders with the Bertrand folder.

However, Tanguay does not have this marriage so I must work my way back another generation to Michel Louis Bertrand and Marie Josephte Boyer dit St Germain who married 10 Aug 1778 at St Michel, Vaudreuil according to the published information on this family. Both Louis Michel and Marie Josephte appear to be widowed at the time of their marriage. One notes from given baptismal records that Louis Michel would have been 41 years of age and Marie Josephte 37 years of age. In order to find the parents of Luis Michel I need to find his first marriage. His first wife was Marie Charlotte Bertrand and they married 10 June 1763 at LaPrairie. Louis Michel parents were recorded as Jacques Bertrand and Marie Louise Dumouchelle. Tanguay records their marriage as 19 Sep 1729 at Montréal which I shall verify on my next study day for the Bertrand family. So Jean is the first generation, Jacques is the second generation, Louis Michel is the third generation, Antoine is the fourth generation, Julien Vital is the fifth generation and Antoinette is the sixth generation. I can now separate the files into folders with the Bertrand folder.

Séguin family
I continued working on the Séguin family and the marriage of the parents of Antoinette Séguin celebrated 16 Apr 1812 at Ste Madeleine, Riguad reveals the parents of this couple.
Parents of Hyacinthe Séguin: Hyacinthe Séguin dit Laderoute and Marie Louise Rouleau.
Parents of Monique Villeneuve: Simon Villeneuve and Madeleine Sabourin.
I found the baptism for Hyacinthe Séguin (28 May 1788 at Ste Anne de Bellevue, Montréal) and Monique Villeneuve (3 July 1792 at Oka, Deux Montagnes). Monique appears to have died between 1852 and 1861 as Hyacinthe is a widower on the 1861 census.
I then found the marriage of Hyacinthe's parents: Hyacinthe Séguin dit Laderoute and Marie Louise Rouleau which was celebrated 7 Feb 1785 at St Michel, Vaudreuil. The marriage lines revealed the parents of this couple.

Bertrand and Séguin families
I decided to move on from the Whalen/Welland family as I was not finding any information that was helpful for this line.
I have a marriage for Julien Vital Bertrand and Antoinette Séguin at St Jean Baptiste, L'Orginal, Prescott Co UC 7 Feb 1842. I asked for an online verification and did receive one. It would still be nice to view the register I must admit and I hope to do that when next we are in Toronto.
Parents of Julien Vital Bertrand listed were: Antoine Bertrand and Josette (Marie Josephte ?) Cholet.
Parents of Antoinette Séguin listed were: Hyacinthe Séguin and Monique Villeneuve.
I did find a baptism for Julien Vital Bertrand 28 Apr 1814 at Ste Madeleine, Rigaud, LC. The baptism for Antoinette Séguin is said to be 15 Jun 1815 also at Ste Madeleine, Rigaud but the baptism I find for a daughter of this couple is named Monique Noelette (in this time period who appears to have survived) - 25 Dec 1815 (born 25 Dec 1815). The date online of 15 Jun is from a family website. There was a daughter baptized 22 November 1814 (born 21 November 1814) which would make the June birthdate a seven months baby at most and likely less than that. I suspect the date is in error. I wonder though whether the name Antoinette by which she is known is perhaps a Confirmation name since her recorded name is Monique Noelette.
Looking at the census that I can find for Julien Vital Bertrand and Antoinette Séguin I find her birth dates various (1852 (birthdate 1815), 1861 (birthdate 1813) and 1871 (birthdate 1814). She is always listed as 1 to 2 years older than Julien (his birth dates range from 1817 to 1815 although his baptism is clearly found to be 28 April 1814). Hyacinthe and Monique had a daughter in 1813 (they married in 1812) but I find a burial for Rosalie at four days of age. They also had a daughter mentioned earlier Madeleine Monique in November 1814 who was buried 5 Sep 1815. I find three daughters born after Monique Noelette in 1817, 1818 and 1820 and then Hyacinthe is born in 1821.
Searching for the burials of Julien Vital Bertrand and Antoinette Séguin did not locate a burial for either. The census shows them to be at Petite Nation, Ottawa West, Québec in 1852, André Avellin in 1861 and Hull on the 1871 census. I do not find them on the 1881 census. Their daughter Antoinette marries in 1877 at Hull but they do not appear on the 1881 census with this young couple.
However, I feel that I have established that Antoinette Séguin is the daughter (Monique Noelette) of Hyacinthe Séguin and Monique Villeneuve and that the father of Hyacinthe is also Hyacinthe as he is listed as fils on the baptisms of their children. That is also helpful. I will continue working back on this family line today.

Back to Genealogy
Today I want to work on the French Canadian ancestry of our son-in-law. I have already been working on the parents of his paternal grandmother seeking out their baptisms and I have been successful. I am hoping that if there is an error she will spot it as she looks over any papers she might have for her family. I want to complete as much of the chart as possible and at the moment I only go back to her 2x great grandparents and the chart has room back to her 5x great grandparents. But I shall work back by generation collecting baptism/birth, marriage and burial/death records from Drouin on Ancestry. I also want to go to Library and Archives Canada to check out the directories for the families (and any other information that might be helpful). I will look at all the published histories for any of these families. So far I am looking at Grégoire, Lauzon, Tremblay, Lanoie, Rheaume, Brunet, Labelle, Séguin, Potvin, Giroux, Blondin, Lacroix, Thibaut, Constantineau, Boileau, St Amour and that is just back to the 2x great grandparents.
A mystery for me is their path and it lead to questions in my mind. The families are in the western area of Québec opposite Ottawa ON and then a movement up to Sturgeon Falls and then back again to Ottawa for one line and the other line comes immediately to the Embrun area. Am I right with the Sturgeon Falls families? I continue to look for proof but it is not impossible for one young man to travel from Papineauville to Sturgeon Falls I do not think but I would like more proof than just the baptisms and marriages. The burials are past the date of record in Ancestry so I will need to try and find that information another way.
Today I shall move back another generation looking for information that I didn't find earlier. As I move back though I have already found baptisms/marriages and burials for a number of the ancestors. It will be a little quicker and then I can start working on the 3x, 4x and 5x great grandparents and see how much information I can find. Unfortunately a lot of these families have not been researched which makes it even more important to try and find information and especially pictures if they are obtainable.
I will also spend a little more time on my Siderfin family today and continue to send information to my new correspondent.
