The third year for Blake Newsletter and it continues at two pages. There is so much I could write about but I already am blogging most days on Blake with the ongoing transcription of wills. Another couple of days will see all the PCC wills for the Blake family in Wiltshire completed.

BritainsDNA

I decided to test my brother at BritainsDNA (and he kindly consented) to see how his results would look when he was tested by a UK company since all of our ancestry is known to be English. The results were pretty much as anticipated and very much in line with the results already obtained from FT DNA. However, there is a different look to the layout of the results and if spending money on DNA testing interests you then I would highly recommend testing with this company. Our paternal line continues without an exact match although that is because no one in our line has tested other than my brother and there are a number of known cousins. Perhaps the most important item I learned was that this is an ancient British Isles line most commonly found today in southern Ireland although less frequently in the Hampshire UK area where my line is located. Since, on paper, this line was in the Andover area from the late 1400s on using the surname Blake I am left to theorize that my line chose the name Blake at some point in the past prior to the late 1400s perhaps in a marriage with the Blake family. The Manor Records for this area interest me greatly in that regard and may provide a solution.

Galway Blake Family

Three members of the study can trace their lines back to the Galway Blake Family and possibly in another issue of the newsletter there will be a short story about their lines. Suffice it to say for the moment that these three members have now given a precise yDNA signature for their particular Galway lines which will be helpful to others trying to trace back to Galway, Ireland in their Blake lines.

Blake yDNA study

The Study continues to grow and expand in terms of results. We now have a result for a Suffolk line which does not match anyone else but is a founder line. Another member of the I2b1 grouping has a match with a Blake member (236981) who is not with FT DNA but has a known ancestry going back to Walcot (Bath), Somerset and Burbage/Wootton Basset, Wiltshire prior to that. A little boost for that member searching their ancestry.

Wills Transcription

Once Wiltshire is completed (this week!) I will move on to Hampshire where I have over 60 wills to transcribe which includes the PCC wills and wills from the Winchester Record Office. I have managed to acquire a dozen of the really early wills and will work on that group first.

Blake Newsletter

The Blake Newsletter is complete and will be published tomorrow. The Table of Contents includes: BritainsDNA, Galway Blake Family, Blake yDNA study, and Wills Transcription. The length continues at two pages. Submissions are always welcomed and the length can be longer but I decided that if only I was contributing then it would remain at two pages.

My ambition for 2014 is to complete the wills at hand but with over a thousand that is perhaps somewhat optimistic but will give it a good try! Once completed then I will move on to other transcription projects that I have at hand which includes nearly 1000 images collected at Kew from various ancient documents which involve the Blake family. My strongest interest continues to be in the ancient Blake families of the British Isles but also I hope to do some family reconstructions based on the wills, census and parish records. That will continue to be ongoing.

In the New Year I hope to restore my Blake one name study website which is rather empty at the moment. When we changed internet providers the site did not get properly saved and consequently has to be rebuilt. I need to rethink how I am building it to get the maximum usage out of the available space. I am acquiring a lot of information that I would like to share but some of it could be best shared by uploading it to Internet Archive once it is in an acceptable *.pdf format. That then leaves the space available for more current work particularly on family trees.

I feel that 2013 has been a successful year for the study of the Blake Family. A lot of new information has become available and the yDNA study continues to grow. I think that my theory that there are many founders may prove to be quite accurate given the work already done on the Calendar of Patent Rolls. That Blake is a characteristic surname rather than associated with land is, to me, a step forward. I think that it hinders research on the Blake family to restrict ourselves to thinking of all Blake as descendant of Robert Blake/Robert de Blakeland of Quemberford, Wiltshire. The chart at the Swindon and Wiltshire Record Office basically eliminates Robert as the founder of that particular line given that the founder is a Richard Blake/Blaake/Blague who lived during the time of Edward I/Edward II. Even though there is an error in that chart which has Richard being the donor of land to the Knights Templar, this is a donation that actually exists in the records at Kew and it was a Roger Blake of Madebrook, Hertfordshire who made the donation. Finding Richard le Blak as a merchant from Rouen, Normandy seeking to set up a market in England in 1274 was an amazing find in the Calendar of Patent Rolls. Being able to link that Richard to the Richard in the Blake Pedigree Chart at the Swindon and Wiltshire Record Office would be equally amazing but not yet done.

We can only continue to move forward in our pursuit of the Blake family and I am always really happy to find like minded people searching out the past of this ancient and fascinating family of the British Isles.

Will of Thomas Blake, Gentleman, Wishford, Wiltshire - The National Archives PROB 11/1477/316, probated 30 Apr 1808

Although I am coming close to finishing Wiltshire, this will of Thomas Blake at 615 lines has slowed me down somewhat. There are still three wills to complete so will likely finish very early in January. I need to work on the Blake Newsletter as well today and tomorrow.

Determining the ancestry of this Thomas Blake is somewhat of a puzzle. This Thomas is mentioned with respect to other wills in the New Sarum area. Namely he was the deponent giving witness to the handwriting and subscription of Margaret Blake:

But John does not mention Thomas Blake in his will.

Thomas does not mention any Blake relatives in his will except for his sister Mary married to William Dredge and their children - Mary, John, William, Ann, Thomas and Solomon. I did not yet determine if Francis Gregory was married to Ann. Mary at the time of writing the will is unmarried, John and William both have children, Thomas is mentioned just one time and Solomon is not mentioned although one of the children of William is also named Solomon.

A small estate in Steeple Langford later called KINGSTON'S was possibly that in 1242–3 assessed as 1/10 knight's fee and held by John de Campeny. (fn. 103) John of Kingston held it in 1291. (fn. 104) It passed to Nicholas Kingston (d. c. 1323), who left a wife Anstice and as heir a brother John. John forfeited his lands as a contrariant but on the return to England of Queen Isabella in 1326 he re-entered by force. (fn. 105) The estate passed with Little Corsley manor in Corsley to his son Thomas and to Thomas's son Sir John (fl. 1383), and perhaps with that manor in the Kingston family until the death of Mary Kingston, wife of Thomas Lisle, in 1539. (fn. 106) It belonged to John Brimsden in 1560 (fn. 107) and probably to Thomas Brimsden of Steeple Langford in 1587. Thomas Brimsden of East Stowell in Wilcot held it in 1599 (fn. 108) and 1632, (fn. 109) and in 1652 his son Thomas (d. 1685) settled it on himself and his wife Anne (d. 1711). (fn. 110) Thomas's son Thomas married Eleanor Blagden (fn. 111) and Kingston's passed to a spinster Eleanor Brimsden, presumably the youngest Thomas's daughter and heir. In 1713 and 1717 Eleanor held it jointly with Edward Blagden (fn. 112) (d. 1730) of Keevil, (fn. 113) who was evidently her heir or assign. By 1733 it had passed to Edward's relict Anne Blagden (d. 1769) (fn. 114) and in 1770 was sold by her daughters Anne and Eleanor Blagden to Thomas Blake (fn. 115) (d. 1808). Blake devised Kingston's, 62 a. and pasture rights, to his niece Mary Dredge (d. 1816), wife of George Smith, for life, and to his grandnephew John Dredge (d. 1812), whose son Solomon Dredge held it from 1816 (fn. 116) to his death in 1856. Dredge's heirs were his sister Anne (d. 1858), wife of William Blake, and nephew J. J. Marshall. (fn. 117) Francis, Lord Ashburton, bought the estate, a moiety from Marshall in 1867 and a moiety from Anne Blake's trustees in 1868, (fn. 118) and added it to Steeple Langford manor.

1    This is the Last Will
2    and Testament of me Thomas Blake of Wishford in

4    that all my just debts Legacies Funeral and

Burbach was an earlier name for Burbage. However in the Domesday Book the following information for Burbage:

Buberge/Burbed/Burbetc(e): King's land with Vitalis the priest holding the church; Blackman from Humphrey de L'Isle; William from Richard Sturmy; Ralph of Hauville. Church.

Tenement, barn, stable, backside and garden, with enclosed meadow-ground called Flexfield (1a.) also enclosed arable ground called West Several (2a.) and parcel of arable land called Rudmead (1a.1r.) all in Burbage. These premises demised for 1,000 years.
Also three closes of arable land called the West Several (6½a.) situate in West Court in the manor of Burbage Dorrells; these premises leased for 99 years, 5 April 1770, and lease now assigned. Release in fee and assignment of term of 1000 years in trust to attend fee, and assignment of two terms of 99 years in trust (1) John Blake of Westcott, in Burbage, yeoman, and Mary, his wife, (2) John Moody, late of Milton Lilbourne, shop-keeper but now of Draycot FitzPayne, near Milton, (3) Thomas Bright Gale of Durley, in Burbage, farmer, (4) Thomas, Earl of Ailesbury, (5) John Ward of Marlborough, gent.
Tenement with barn, stable, backside and garden, and meadow called Flexfield (1a.), arable ground called West Several (2a.) and another called Rudmead (1a.1r.); all in Westcott, Burbage. These had been mortgaged, by demise for 1000 years, Blake to Moody, 19 September 1770, and by same mortgage three closes called West Several (6½ a.) in West Court, manor of Burbage Dorrells, had been assigned for residue of term of 99 years. £488.17s.6d. now due on said mortgage. The following pieces of land in the manor of Burbage Esturmy: two half-acres in Rudmead, two acres called the West Several and three closes adjoining each other (3a.), also 1a.2r.28p. of land allowed on a former enclosure in the Marsh. These had been mortgages, 5 February 1780, Blake and Gale, by assignment of lease for 99 years. £210.6s. now owing on this mortgage.
Now first-mentioned premises, in Westcott, are released in fee by (1) to (4) and demise for 1000 years assigned to (5) in trust for (4) and to attend the inheritance. Premises in Burbage Dorrells are assigned by (2) and premises in Burbage Esturmy assigned by (3), to (5) for residue of terms of 99 years, in trust for (4).
Consideration: £700 paid by (4) of which £88.17s.6d. is paid to (2), £210.6s. to (3) and 16s.6d. to (1). Endorsed with similar conveyance, dated 13 October 1802, made by John Blake and Mary Blake, son and widow of within-mentioned John Blake, the Earl of Ailesbury and John Ward, since John Blake, the father had died before within-mentioned conveyance had been put into execution.
There is also (separate) the lease for a year, dated 12 October 1802, for this endorsement; it is endorsed 'Thomas' Blake and '12 May 1801', but has been corrected inside.

Consideration: £85 (which, together with a sum of £465 mentioned in indentures of assignment of even date with this release, together making up the sum of £550, is the full consideration money for absolute purchase of premises).

These premises had been mortgaged by (2) by demise for 500 years, 26 September 1741; and the mortgage had since passed to (1). Now (1) assigns to (3) in trust for (4).
Consideration: £465 paid by (4) to (1) being the amount due on mortgage.
