I think maybe it is about time to say the obvious. Taping the phone call of a public servant who is really trying to explain how government works best to support jobs and the Canadian people is enough really for me. It is unacceptable to do so; no crime was committed; nothing can justify this taping of a phone call where one member was unaware that he was being taped. What is even worse is that we have to hear it as well.
Going back to the elementary politics with which I am most familiar, the Prime Minister, once elected, names his Cabinet. He gets to choose the people that he wants to work with him to make a better life for Canadians. Probably if we knew all the inner workings of government we would be appalled on occasion but the intent, unless a criminal act occurs, is to benefit Canadians without actually breaking any of our laws. The Cabinet is there to assist the Prime Minister not to set up a separate camp within the Cabinet. The leader of the Conservative Party is treading on very shaky ground getting involved in this at all. He should absolutely not comment and that is coming from me a Conservative supporter. Conservative Prime Ministers also have Cabinets and permitting Cabinet Members to become more powerful than the Prime Minister in terms of deciding policy is just basically wrong. They were not elected to that purpose.
If a member of parliament is not happy with the party for whom they ran then the answer is, to me, quite obvious. Mind you if there had been a wholesale insurrection with everyone lining up behind Ms Wilson-Raybould this would be a different story. But the caucus did not do that not even with the defection of Dr Philpott. Prime Minister Trudeau has the support of his caucus.
SNC-Lavalin wanted the contract to complete our light rail here in Ottawa. Personally I think they lied to protect that process by saying that there wasn't any threat to the company remaining in Canada or that jobs would be lost. The truth on that has flowed to the surface and for once that was a good leak. I liked it. Now if they would just finish the light rail; it is taking much too long.
The First Nations and Inuit Peoples of Canada deserve to have a representative as clever and respected as Ms Wilson-Raybould and I, for one, was most disappointed that she refused to do what the Prime Minister requested. In her hands would have been the ability to make true change for her people. The Acts that manage life for them need to be reviewed, revised and updated so that the monies that are accorded to them are used in the best possible way to increase their livelihood and the livelihood of their children.
It is after all the right of the Prime Minister to choose his advisers and to change them at any time; he doesn't need to explain himself in that regard. Although I never voted for his father, I did respect him. He was deeply concerned about Canada and gave the best years of his life to Canada.
I am very concerned that a Cabinet Minister did not listen to the idea of consulting with other jurists but chose to make a decision that has had such a profound result. There are no precedents to fall back on; this was new legislation. Personally I think the Prime Minister should have shuffled his cabinet (moving Ms Wilson-Raybould) last September when Ms Wilson-Raybould says that she had decided on the issue of a deferred prosecution agreement and would not change her mind. I personally do not care if SNC-Lavalin bribed someone in Libya; that is how they do business over there from what I understand.
This Blog will talk about researching my English ancestors from Canada but also the ancestors of our son in law whose families stretch back far into Colonial French Canada. My one name study of Blake and of Pincombe also dominate my blog these days.

Chromosome 23
I still do not have that perfect match that will let me formally accept my phasing of my grandparents chromosome 23 that was passed to myself and my siblings. I know the one length of course which was inherited from my father since my sisters and I all receive his X chromosome which was passed to him from his mother. If ever I get matches on the Rawlings line then it is somewhat easy to place them as they match my two sisters and I and not my two brothers. Thus far I do not know if any of these matches are from my grandmother's father's line. Although she received the second middle name of Cotterill/Cotterell I am only penciling in the thought that her father was George Cotterill who was also born at Kimpton. This was the only Cotterill family there. The priest has baptized the baby with that middle name and the baby was registered also with that name. My great grandmother elected to keep her child and on the 1881 census my grandmother was finally discovered after several years and a number of certificates living with her maternal grandparents William Rawlins and Elizabeth (Lywood) Rawlins. Not long after I discovered a cousin in Australia had put together his family tree and he included Elizabeth with husband William Taylor (married in 1882). One of his first questions to me when we met on line was "who is Ada Rawlins on the 1881 Census with William and Elizabeth Rawlins?" By then I could respond that I believed she was my grandmother.
But back to the phasing of my grandparents Chromosome 23. To really perfect this phasing I need a match with one of my second cousins (I do not have any first cousins) where we share the Buller line or the Gray line of my maternal grandfather John Routledge Pincombe's mother Grace Gray. The Buller line looks easier because one of my grandmother's sisters had daughters. But to date none of them have tested. I have tried to find descendants of my mother's first cousin but no luck thus far. On the Gray side, Grace's two older sisters died in childbirth leaving just one daughter who has had children but thus far the DNA shared is too small to definitively declare that one of my two versions is absolutely correct.
Working with the data from the other chromosomes where I have known matches with cousins who also share DNA has helped to create these two scenarios. I await the chance that one of these days one of my second cousins will test.
And it continues to snow. Since it is nearly 2 degrees celsius the snow is fluffy and wet looking not our usual dry stuff that we get at 10 and 20 degrees celsius below zero! There will likely be snowmen if the children can find excitement in yet another snowfall. We are definitely waiting for spring.
One does wonder if 150 years later people can be content with just accepting that children were born out of wedlock. I am most accepting of that. People did not marry for a number of reasons and babies were created in an unplanned way just as they are these days! I am glad that we are more accepting of how life flows.

Blake Newsletter
I am just in the process of putting together the Blake Newsletter for the 1st of April. This will be the second issue of volume 8. This was my first attempt at a newsletter and I am somewhat satisfied with it. The main purpose was to try to look at several different aspects of the Blake One-Name Study which I started in 2011. My husband was ill at that time and we spent most of our time at home thus giving me long hours to work on my various projects. This newsletter was one of those projects. Fortunately a pacemaker restored his health and we did move on to more traveling but it did take a little while thus permitting me to get myself into the scheme of producing a newsletter four times a year. Initially I stuck to two pages but lately I have allowed it to expand as I decided to publish my Andover, Hampshire transcriptions. They are not proofread but I do not make a lot of changes so decided to get the material out there for people to use and they can always write to me if they have a query about a record.
As I was writing a glance out the window revealed a heavy snowfall, promised but one does hope it might pass by! However, it is snowing and we will probably get 5 to 10 centimetres the weather people are reporting. Fortunately we have had quite a bit of melting and we were just starting to see the ground once again in spots. Our front lawn still has about a metre of standing snow (accumulated from all of our shoveling partially) but it also has come down considerably. For a while in the winter we were looking at a wall of snow as we left our lane way very cautiously.
Back to the Newsletter and hope to have it done by Monday.

Pincombe-Pinkham family on the 1543-1545 Lay Subsidy for Devon
Amazingly I could not find my second tax CD when I was writing up the newsletter and then suddenly after I had sent it off and set about cleaning there it was! I decided to extract the relevant information from this CD for the Bideford area. Since I am doing that I will extract all Pincombe records from the CD too for the next newsletter just to add an addendum to that article on the Bideford Chart (see my blog post of 7th Mar 2019). St Giles in the Wood is missing from this particular CD which is a pity as it might have shed some light on the Pincombe family there.

I added in the Purcombe spelling for the first time. The Coleridge Hundred is in the south part of Devon. On Family Search I find just five instances of this surname and none on FreeBMD.
Looking at the Devon Taxes (Stoate) 1541 to 1660 I found the spelling Purkham and the one instance was in Blackauton Parish - Thomas Purkham L 2. A rather interesting find as there are wills for members of the Pincombe family in the Exeter area, one for Radigunde Purcombe dating back to 1605 at Sherford Parish. But I could never find the connection between this family to the south of Devon and the family in the northwest part of Devon. I think this will make a good article for the next newsletter! I shall make a note so that it doesn't pass from my mind between now and three months from now. I am so busy these days; my email is collecting once again and must respond. I used to respond right away and say that I would get back to people but there are too many emails in my inbox these days. I just get to them as I can.
Find My Past has 278 items but only 14 actually have the surname in the last name column with the remainder being Electoral Registers and it is the name of an area in Dorset. One interesting one from Sherford, Devon for the will of Thomas Purcombe being contested by ? Lake in 1577. Another for an Anne Purcombe and Arthur Browne's licence of 8 Sep 1622 to marry (Exeter Consistory Court). A marriage between Johan Purcombe and John Tuckerman at Halwell, Devon 30 Jan 1574. John Purcombe was buried 12 Apr 1573 at Halwell. A couple of records from the 1700s-1900s. One record is incorrectly transcribed as Kate Purcombe. I am fairly sure this is Kate Pincombe and will check that one out. So is this a Pincombe family that was spelled incorrectly at Tax time back in the 1500s? A mystery for sure and will keep them in the group now.

Pincombe Charts, original One-Name Study
at the Guild of One-Name Studies
These
Pincombe Charts were created by the two researchers in the original
One-name-study at the Guild of one-name-studies. I reprint them with the
thought in mind that others could add to the knowledge of these charts. I have
reworked some of them and will publish that information when complete. I am
publishing the chart for Bideford in this issue of the Pincombe-Pinkham
Newsletter.
The
link for the original chart (image below):
Any
information on any of these lines is most welcome and if you wish to write up
an article on the family at Bideford it would be interesting to understand more
about this line of the family. More work is needed on this chart to verify the
entries and add new information.
William
Pincombe heads up this chart and I have done a little work on this early part
of the chart. There is a will for a William Pynckham dated 1570 at Bideford (this
will amongst others having been lost in the bombing of the Exeter Record Office
during WWII). Other wills for a Richard Pyncombe dated 1592, a Peter Pyncombe
dated 1622, Philip Pyncombe dated 1632, a William Pincombe dated 1641 and a
Thomas Pincombe dated 1663 (there are more wills beyond this date at Bideford
for the Pincombe family). The earliest Pinkham wills found were in the 1800s at
Totnes and Dawlish. The loss of these wills is enormous with regard to tracing
this family back in Devon to the North Molton area where they are found in the
late 1400s. I will have a little to say about the use of yDNA and this family
but still quite restrained as we simply need more testers before we can really
look at this family line.
On
the chart, William’s son Phillippe Pincombe is said to have married Wilmote Beare
10 Feb 1583 and his will is perhaps the one dated 1632 at Bideford. Phillippe
has two brothers (William Pincombe married to Johanne Pyne 31 Jan 1587 and
Richard Pincombe married to Joan Row 27 May 1588). There is also one sister
listed as Johane with the date 5 Oct 1566. This family is said to live at
Bideford. I checked the records. There is a marriage between Phillippe Pyncombe
and Wilmote Beare on Family Search and the batch number M05032-1. This record
also listed on Find My Past with one of the results leading to the image of the
parish register for 1583 for Bideford.
The
records for Bideford at Find My Past do appear to begin in the 1580s. This
Philip Pincombe would perhaps be 20 to 30 years when he married so born between
1553 and 1563. If his father left his will in 1570 then he may still have been
a minor at his death.
The
Tax Lists for Bideforde list Richard Pincombe G 6 living there in 1581 and a
Richard Pyncombe left his will in Bideford in 1592 (burial register at Bideford
lists his burial as the 7 Jun 1592). Richard Pincombe 6 0 is listed on the 1642
Assessment. Was William Pincombe [Pynckham] (heading up this chart) a son to a Richard
Pincombe with William Pynckham dying young circa 1570? In the yDNA study one of
the testers does trace back to the Pincombe family in the Barnstaple area. With
that in mind I did check the Devon Visitations 1620 (with additions) and the
1602 will of William Blake of Filleigh and North Molton. Thus far it isn’t
possible to link these two families with a paper trail. I have images of early
Pincombe documents and will move on to transcribing those once I have completed
published the charts of the original research group and the wills which I have
transcribed.
There
is a marriage on Find My Past (again with an original image) for a Walter
Pincombe and Johane Pyne 31 Jan 1587 at Bideford.
I
plan to return to these charts and continue proving the lines down for these
Pincombe/Pinkham families.
These tables represent many years of work at the
record offices by the two original Pincombe-Pinkham family researchers and
Richard Pinkham was a physician and able to make contact with some of the
Pincombe families living in Devon. The names seen on these charts usually in
the top corners are individuals who provided information for that particular
chart. In the case of charts from the United States, Galen Pinkham has
contributed a great deal of information to the descendants of the
Pincombe/Pinkham family and this information can be found on the charts which
he produced. I do remind other researchers that there are discrepancies in
these charts and I would appreciate knowing of any that you may find so that
eventually a corrected chart will be published.

The Robert Pincombe in this will is my 3x great
grandfather. He lists seven of his eight children in his will and does not
mention his deceased wife or deceased son William both having died in 1825 and
1823 respectively. My ancestor was his second eldest son John Pincombe and he
received just five shillings. In his case he has already received his
inheritance. The will links together Robert’s brothers John and William and his
brother in law Philip Rowcliffe. He does not mention his sister Grace married
to Richard Headdon. This will was just something very nice to find as I already
knew all of these details but having it in my records makes that obvious to
anyone who picks up this research at a later date.
