One week hiatus until 6th May

Life has just become very very busy and I shall not likely be blogging again until the 6th of May unless of course something comes in that I just have to blog about.

Will of Moses Chorley, Yeoman, Sampford Arundell - The National Archives PROB 11/1415/181, probated 10 Oct 1804

There are twelve wills in my folder for the Chorley/Churley/Chorly/Churly family and none for the Charley/Charly/Charlie family from the National Archives at Kew. However, there are 25 wills for the Charlie/Charley family on the Devon Wills Genuki website.  There are six for Chorley and 30 for Churly/Churley also on the Devon Wills Genuki website. The name was spelled interchangeably it would appear but thus far little work has been done on this family in Devon. I am always hopeful that someone will take it on as a one name study. Given the book written up on the Charley family I think it would probably be very interesting but I would do Buller before I did Charley and I haven't got time to do Buller! I barely have time to do what I am doing and this in retirement!

I will add these 15 wills to my blog in hopes that one day someone will find it advantageous to them. I do not think any of them are related to my line at Bishops Nympton/Kentisbury/Coombe Martin.

These two records following for the marriages of Moses Chorley from the transcriptions of Roy Parkhouse (http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/SOM/Wellington/Transcripts/copyrite.htm). This is perhaps Moses Chorley baptized 30 Apr 1731 at Kittisford Somerset and son of Moses and Amey Chorley who were themselves married 14 Nov 1722 at Saint Peter Cathedral, Exeter she being Amiah Mynard.

A Moses Chorley married Mary Saunders 29 Jun 1785 at Wellington Somerset (both sojourners). There is a second marriage for Moses Chorley and Sarah Baker 23 Jan 1795 at by license at Wellington and Moses is from Sampford Arundel.

There is a marriage for Ann Chorley and Edward Trood 12 Apr 1799 at Sampford Arundel according to an online record for the Troode/Trood family (http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/t/r/o/Peter-W-Troode/WEBSITE-0001/UHP-0454.html). But as with all things online you must be cautious as the children are somewhat suspect having been born 30 years after they were married.

Charlie/Charley/Chorley/Churley Family of Bishops Nympton, Kentisbury, Coombe Martin

The last research day for the Charley-Charlie family of Bishops Nympton, Kentisbury, Coombe Martin was 30 Apr 2011 http://kippeeb.blogspot.ca/2011/04/charley-charlie-family-at-bishops.html shortly before I ceased doing my research process on selected surnames (namely my 4x great grandparents who were known to me). At that time I mentioned the wills that we collected at Kew on our visit there in 2010. I will use this time to transcribe those wills.

I also mentioned the book that I was able to purchase "The Romance of the Charley Family"blogged on 12 Apr 2012:

http://kippeeb.blogspot.ca/2012/04/romance-of-charley-family-charley.html

and that has been the sum and total of my work on the Charlie/Charley family. Of note, Mary Charlie married John Pincombe 8 Nov 1767 at Bishops Nympton and they were my 4x great grandparents.

Will of Joseph Blake, Timber Hewer, Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire - The National Archives PROB 11/1508/245, probated 14 Feb 1810

Joseph Blake the testator is at Beaconsfield, Northamptonshire. The first will that I blogged from Buckinghamshire was by Eleanor Lavinia Blake and probated in 1830. The parents of Lavinia were Henry Blake and Sarah Hare. They had ten children at Beaconsfield and may have owned/operated the Swan Inn. This will, I suspect, adds to the story of the family of Henry Blake at Beaconsfield detailing all of his siblings (see more below).

The will of James Blake the elder, Shoemaker at Chenies was blogged on the 23rd of April 2012 and at the time I did not have any information on that family either. Chenies is 7 miles NE  of Beaconsfield and Winslow is 31 miles NW. Is the Blake family at Chenies related to this Blake family at Beaconsfield. James mentions nephews James Blake the younger at Chenies and Ezekiel Blake at Hemel Hempstead (this is only 12 miles distance with Hemel Hempstead being NNE of Chenies).  James' will was probated in 1799. The distance does make one wonder but the forenames do not fit with the families as mentioned below.

The family in this present will consists of Joseph Blake (testator) and his siblings Henry Blake, Samuel Blake, David Blake, Sarah Watts (married to Thomas Watts),  and Ann Yeates (married to James Yeates).

There is a Samuel Blake on the 1841 Census at Beaconsfield and he is listed as 60 years of age with no one living with him (hence he was born in Buckinghamshire circa 1781 and below in a family grouping there is a Samuel Blake baptized in 1777 with the rounding up or down of ages in the 1841 census this is within that year span).

The apprentice indentures (1710 - 1811) list a David Blake of Beaconsfield Wheelwright with an apprentice Joseph Blake and the date 19 June 1759. The will does mention that David Blake is a wheelwright. Another entry  in the apprentice indentures for David Blake of Beaconsfield as Wheelwright with apprentice Henry Blake 5 Feb 1762.

The 1841 census lists a David Blake (age 65 so born circa 1776 at Buckinghamshire and one of the family groupings below has a David baptized in 1775) living in Beaconsfield with his wife Mary (55 years of age) and son William 35 years of age. Also living with this family James Clifford 9 and Susanna Crouch 50. Susanna being listed as a Female Servant. David is a Publican.

From Find my Past there was a David Blake married to Mary Spring 1728 at Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire (Society of Genealogists). I could not find this marriage on Ancestry so no further details.

Moving to Family Search I found the following children for David and Mary Blake at Beaconsfield baptized between 1729 and 1743:

Andrew baptized 29 Jan 1729
David baptized 22 Dec 1731; buried 4 Jul 1743
Susanna baptized 20 Feb 1733
Joseph baptized 30 Mar 1736
Elizabeth baptized 11 Mar 1738
Hannah baptized 25 Feb 1740
Henry baptized 11 Jul 1743

I now have the thought is the David Blake who married Mary Spring in 1728 at Beaconsfield, the grandfather of Joseph the testator in the will below? Looking at the sons of this David Blake namely Henry, Andrew and Joseph the following groups can be extracted from the Beaconsfield Parish Registers on Family Search. I could not locate these marriages.

There is an Andrew Blake married to Elizabeth baptizing children at Beaconsfield:

Mary baptized 29 Aug 1760
Elizabeth baptized 30 Apr 1762; buried 27 Apr 1772
John baptized 11 Dec 1763
Joseph baptized 11 Aug 1765
David baptized 3 Jul 1767
Hannah baptized 23 Apr 1769; buried 3 Sep 1769
William baptized 17 Mar 1771
Henry baptized 16 May 1773; buried 1 Jun 1773
Elizabeth baptized 8 May 1774
Frances baptized 27 May 1776
Hannah baptized 28 Feb 1779

There is a Joseph Blake married to Anne baptizing children at Beaconsfield:

Joseph baptized 20 Sep 1767
Henry baptized 15 May 1769
Sarah baptized 2 Jan 1771
William baptized 10 Jan 1773
David baptized 15 Mar 1775
Samuel baptized 16 Apr 1777
James baptized 15 Oct 1779

This family looks the most promising to match the siblings of Joseph the testator in the will below: Henry Blake, Samuel Blake, David Blake, Sarah Watts (married to Thomas Watts), Ann Yeates (married to James Yeates) with Ann being the only missing child (of note the mother's name was Anne). There was a Joseph Blake apprenticed to David Blake in 1759 so the dates of the baptisms of the children would have followed the completion of an apprenticeship and this also fits quite well (Joseph would have been 23 years of age when he apprenticed as a wheelwright). The Joseph leaving the will below was baptized in 1767 and hence 43 years of age if this is the correct Joseph Blake.

There is a Henry Blake married to Margaret baptizing children at Beaconsfield:

Joseph baptized 10 May 1778
Mary baptized 10 May 1778
David baptized 22 Mar 1780

I did find a query online concerning Sarah Blake (born 2 Jan 1771 at Beaconsfield)  married to Thomas Watts 3 Sep 1794 at Beaconsfield and their children: Joseph baptized 21 Sep 1795 in Beaconsfield, Isabella baptized 29 Jan 1797 in Beaconsfield, Ann baptized 24 Jun 1800 in Beaconsfield, Samuel baptized 27 Dec 1801, James baptized 26 Mar 1804 and Eliza baptized 8 Feb 1807.

There is a tree online at in the World Connect Project which looks at this Beaconsfield family

http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=mjb&id=I013

This tree adds two more children to this family of Joseph and Ann Blake namely Anne baptized 24 Oct 1781 and Benjamin baptized 30 Jan 1785. The submitter has the parents of these children -Andrew, Joseph and Henry in boldface above  as David Blake and Mary Spring with marriage date 6 Jan 1728 (old style) with the notation that David was baptized 7 Mar 1703 in Beaconsfield. The parents of David are listed as John and Elizabeth Blake. The burial for David is listed as 26 Sep 1784 in Beaconsfield. No further information on John and Elizabeth Blake.

The informant has listed descendants for Andrew, Joseph and Henry sons of David Blake and Mary Spring. She has Elizabeth Wade as the wife of Andrew Blake and their marriage 31 Dec 1759 in Beaconsfield. No marriage date or surname for the wife of Joseph Blake married to Ann. Henry is listed as married to Margaret Roman 21 Oct 1776 in Beaconsfield. There are another ten children listed for this couple: Henry baptized 6 Jun 1781, Sarah baptized 26 May 1782, Nancy baptized 18 Sep 1783, Thomas baptized 30 Oct 1785, Margaret baptized 25 Nov 1786, Sarah baptized 25 Nov 1786, Benjamin baptized 27 Mar 1789, Elizabeth baptized 1 Apr 1791, William baptized 27 Feb 1793, and John baptized 10 Oct 1795 all in Beaconsfield. She also lists the marriage of David (baptized 22 Mar 1780) to Sophia Watts and their children: Elizabeth baptized 31 Mar 1809, Mary baptized 14 Oct 1810, Ann Watts 29 Jul 1812, Joseph baptized 7 Jul 1816, Margaret baptized 7 Jun 1818, William baptized 12 Sep 1819, Charlotte baptized 8 Sep 1821, and James baptized 20 Jul 1828 all in Beaconsfield. William (baptized 12 Sep 1819) is listed as marrying Louisa (from Free BMD this is Louisa Bragg and they were married September quarter 1850 in Amersham RD) and their children: George born 1852, Sophia b 1853, Laura b 1855, William b 1856, Eliza b 1858, Henry b 1859, David b 1861, and Mary b 1864 all in Beaconsfield. George (b 1852) is shown as marrying Elizabeth (from Free BMD this is George David Blake and Elizabeth Butcher who married Sep quarter 1875 at Wallingford and with children: Albert b 1880, Annie b 1879, Ethel S b 1877, Harry J b 1886 (twin), Jessie b 1886 (twin), Lizzie b 1884, Margaret b 1882 and Nellie C b 1888).

Although the name James has been used in this Beaconsfield family I do not see anything to connect the Blake family at Chenies/Hemel Hempstead with the Blake family at Beaconsfield.

Will of John Blake, Baker, Winslow, Buckinghamshire - The National Archives PROB 11/1564/128, probated 11 Jan 1815

John Blake the testator is the son of Robert Blake (and Martha Seir) mentioned in the will of John Blake blogged yesterday. John Blake is married to Sarah. John's siblings were Elizabeth, Thomas, Martha (died as an infant), Gabriel, George (died as an infant), and Martha. He has three children Susannah, Martha and John.

This information is from the website called Winslow History mentioned yesterday: http://www.winslow-history.org.uk/winslow_blake.shtm#john5

This website is part of the Winslow History Project and will probably be available for some time. What a marvelous website to set up for Winslow, Buckinghamshire. Of interest, the Blake and Burnham family have been written up. They do request you send any information that you have on people. I will add this Blake family to my Legacy one name Blake study as well as I am able to do so.

George Jones mentioned in the will is the husband of Elizabeth Blake (John's first cousin and daughter of  his father Robert's oldest brother Thomas). She married George Jones by licence 25 Nov 1794 in Wicken, Northamptonshire.

According to this website Sarah had died in 1807 and John in 1815 but he hadn't revised his will so his eldest daughter Susannah took the will to probate as heir at law. John (her younger brother) was not 21 in 1815 nor was Martha her younger sister. Susannah married Charles Neal 24 Apr 1816 at Winslow and they had four children (not named). Martha married Joseph Fletcher and they had 11 children. John does not appear to have married.

Checking through on Google, Family Search, Ancestry and Find My Past and I did not find any new information to add to this family.

Will of William Pecke, Shepherd, Milston - Swindon and Wiltshire Record Office P2/8Reg/109B, probated 14 May 1610 and Peck family at Milston

Martha Peck married George Lywood 26 Oct 1817 at Milston. George had fought at the Battle of Waterloo 18 Jun 1815 and was discharged 6 Oct 1816 (his discharge was for a medical reason - he had asthma). One year later he is back in Milston and marrying Martha.

Martha was baptized 1 Jul 1792 at Milston the daughter of Elizabeth Peck and she was buried 17 Feb 1867 also at Milston. Their daughter Elizabeth Lywood was my 2x great grandmother.

Whilst we were at the WDYTYA Conference in London this past February, I purchased the Milston Baptisms and Burials from the Wiltshire Family History Society.

The earliest baptismal entry is for Anna Pecke in 1578 and the last entry is for Martha Peck in 1792. The earliest burial entry is for Mater Pecke in 1559 and the last entry is for Elizabeth Peck in 1830 (mother of Martha). The cutoff for the entries is 1837.

I do have a will for William Peck from 1610 and an Administration for Bridget Peck his wife in 1611. I did blog the will of William. William and Bridget Peck were my 12 x great grandparents.

I blogged on the Peck family when I first started my rotation through family surnames:

http://kippeeb.blogspot.ca/2011/04/peck-family-of-milston-and-blake-one.html

I still can not really add anything although the will of William Peck I will definitely proofread and update as I see at least one blank. My skill at reading old wills has improved steadily over the past two years. The will itself is probated in the Parochial Court at Fisherton Anger which is a bit of a surprise as Milston is ten miles north of Fisherton Anger. The administration of Bridget Peck will follow on the next research day.

Will of John Blake, Tanner, Winslow, Buckinghamshire - The National Archives PROB 11/866/367, probated 22 Jun 1761

John Blake the testator has left a memorable will of six pages naming all of his siblings and some other relatives including nephews. He is a well to do Tanner and does not appear to have a wife or children (none are named).

His brothers and sisters in order of appearance:

Thomas
Robert (John son of Robert)
Francis
Ann Carpenter (married to John Carpenter, mother of George Carpenter)
George (married to Mary)
Elizabeth Dancer
William
Edward

Uncles/Aunts

Edward Bennell (married to Elizabeth)
George Bennell (deceased lately)

An interesting website which tells me about this family in Winslow:

http://www.winslow-history.org.uk/winslow_blake.shtm

I have located John Blake the testator in this writeup and he was the fourth child of Thomas Blake and Elizabeth Bennell said to be born in 1718 and died 1761 living at Winslow with the occupation Tanner. This fits with the will as written below.

Children of Thomas Blake and Elizabeth Bennell (16 in total):

Thomas (eldest) born 1715, died 1784 all at Winslow, married to Elizabeth Bradbury 11 Jun 1770 in Great Horwood (late marriage for Thomas and no earlier marriage known, children of this couple Mary born 1771 and died 1810 and Elizabeth born 1774 and d after 1851 and they both married) [Thomas left a will in 1780 proven in 1784 naming his brother William Blake and Thomas Bradbury brother in law as executors http://www.winslow-history.org.uk/winslow_will_blake1784.shtm]

Elizabeth born 1716 in Winslow and married to Robert Dancer 1735 in Hoggeston and he was said to be born 1715 in North Marston (one child is mentioned Robert Dancer, b 1738 at North Marston)

George b 1717 but his wife Mary is not mentioned

John born 1718, died 1761 all at Winslow (testator of this will below)

Mary b 1720, died 1720 at Winslow (infant)

William b 1721 Winslow died 1797 Shipton near Winslow married Anne and left his will written in 1793, proven in 1797 mentioning Thomas' daughters Mary and Elizabeth, Gabriel and John (sons of his brother Robert), his brother Edward but no children mentioned for William and his wife Anne (his will and this at the County Record Office http://www.winslow-history.org.uk/winslow_will_blake1793.shtm - one of the witnesses for this will is also James Burnham (same as this will below))

Robert b 1723 Winslow and married to Martha Seir by licence 23 Feb 1746 and they had seven children: Elizabeth, Thomas, John (mentioned in the will below), Martha (died as an infant), Gabriel, George (died as an infant), Martha

Edward b c 1724 Winslow, d July 1725 Winslow

Edmund b c 1725 Winslow, d c 1725 Winslow (possibly twin)

Jonathan bc 1725 Winslow, d c 1725 Winslow (possibly twin)

Ann b 1726 and married to John Carpenter by licence 11 May 1754 in Swanbourne and they had eight children: John, William, George (mentioned in the will below), Elizabeth, Ann, John, Thomas (died as an infant), Rebecca

Mary b c 1728 winslow, d 1729 winslow

Mary b 1729 Winslow and married to George Harris circa 1750 and they had two children Mary and Thomas

Francis b 1731 Winslow and died after 1801 perhaps in London married to Mary White 17 Apr 1759 in Newbottle Northamptonshire and they had ten children: Elizabeth, John, Frances, Thomas, James, Mary, Anne (died as an infant), George, Ann (died as an infant), William (died as an infant)

Edward b 1733 and married to Susannah Mumford 1761 and they had three children Thomas, William and Elizabeth

Edmund b 1734

There is still a home known as Blake House and now Tinkers Corner in Winslow and can be seen on the website mentioned above.

Working backwards Thomas (the father of John testator of the will below) was married to Elizabeth Bennell by licence 2 Dec 1714 in Quainton (she was the daughter of John Bennell and Elizabeth Toms and sister to Edward and George Bennell mentioned in the will below). There is a document showing that he conveyed a tanyard to his son John in 1740 (this being the testator in the will below) on the website: http://www.winslow-history.org.uk/winslow_tanneries.shtm

This Thomas was the son of Thomas and Elizabeth and he had three siblings Elizabeth married to Richard Barton and they had three children: John, Mary and Richard; Anne married to George Stone and John who died as an infant at Winslow. Thomas (son of Thomas) died 1762 at Winslow and left a will dated April 1761 naming his children, grandchildren (noted on website). This will is not available at the National Archives either.

Moving back one more generation looking at Thomas who died 1709 at Winslow and Elizabeth who died 1716 at Winslow. I do have the will of this Thomas and will be transcribing it with the Buckinghamshire wills. He was said to be a local landowner and this probably helps to explain all the property which is mentioned by John in the will below. The website names his brother as George who was married to Maria and they had six children Robert, George, John, Maria, William and Joanna. George and John are traced down one generation.

Will of John Lywood, Mariner on board His Majesty's Ship Queen - The National Archives PROB 11/457/280, probated 7 Oct 1700

There isn't a John Lywood in the family tree that I have that would fit this particular testator. He lived in Southwark which for the time (1700) was distant from the Wiltshire area where the Lywood family was generally found. He names his wife as Sarah and not a great deal more information on this individual.

Canham family of West Harnham, Wiltshire

Elizabeth Canham married George Lywood 18 Jul 1780 at West Harnham, Wiltshire. I know only a couple of items about Elizabeth.

1. Elizabeth and George had three known children:

Jane was born circa 1781 at West Harnham and married James Tyneham 9 Aug 1797 at West Harnham

John was baptized 22 Jan 1784 at West Harnham and married Ann Meaden 28 Sep 1808 at Odstock (they had six children: Mary Ann, William, Thomas, John (died as an infant), Andrew and Emma)

George baptized 7 May 1786 at West Harnham and married to Martha Peck 26 Oct 1817 at Milston (they had four children David, John Elizabeth (my great great grandmother) and George)

2. Elizabeth was buried 9 Feb 1829 at Odstock, Wiltshire and she was 77 years of age so born circa 1752.

All of the Information on Elizabeth was acquired from Warwick Lywood who runs the Lywood one name study at the Guild of one name studies. He did not at that time know her parent's names.

In my first research post on this family I mention Fugglestone St Peter but that is because George (whom she married) was baptized 11 Nov 1750 at Fugglestone St Peter).

http://kippeeb.blogspot.ca/2011/04/canham-at-fugglestone-st-peter.html

In the past two years I have not looked at this family as life has just been too busy. I think that I will spend my hour research time looking to see if anything new has appeared. Then I will change this research day to another surname if I am not finding anything. These records following all from Find My Past.

There was an Elizabeth Canham baptized 18 Feb 1750 at St Martin in the Fields, Middlesex daughter of Henry and Elizabeth Canham (born 7 Feb 1750). There was a Canham family still in London (Boyd's Inhabitants) early in the 1800s with John Canham and Elizabeth his wife (John was born 1777). They lived at St Benet's Pauls Wharf. An Elizabeth Canham of Middlesex left a will December 1780 (SOG). There were 31 marriages for Elizabeth Canham between 1762 and 1814. 17 of the marriages were in Suffolk, 4 in Cambridgeshire, 4 in London or Middlesex, 3 in Lincolnshire, 2 in Essex and 1 in Kent.

The Public Profiler for Great Britain shows that the highest frequency for the Canham surname continues to be Suffolk with very few in Wiltshire in 1998 and in 1881 there were none in Wiltshire with again Suffolk being the location for the highest frequency. I believe that I shall leave this surname and move on to another.

For my next research day I shall look at the Carter surname with two of my 4x great grandmothers being Ann Carter married to Thomas Blake and Mary Carter married to Thomas King. These families being at Andover and Upper Clatford respectively.

To speed up looking at the Lywood family I will transcribe the next Lywood will today.

Will of James Blake the Elder, Shoemaker, Chenies, Buckinghamshire - The National Archives PROB 11/1331/172, probated 19 Oct 1799

No ideas on this family. I did find Ezekiel Blake in Hemel Hempstead with his wife and a son Ezekiel being baptized. Is this family from Devon where the name Ezekiel Blake is also found? As more of the Buckinghamshire wills are transcribed I might have further information on this family.

Will of John Lywood, Esquire, Barton Stacey - The National Archives PROB 11/1776/81, probated 3 Sep 1830

John Lywood (testator) was married to Elizabeth Bennett 6 Dec 1798 at Froyle, Hampshire.

Their children (and all are mentioned in the will below):

John baptized 7 Nov 1799 (born 4 Oct 1799) Andover
Elizabeth baptized 29 Sep 1803 (born 30 Aug 1803) Andover
Leonard baptized 23 Feb 1802 (born 18 Aug 1801) Andover
Mary baptized 25 Jul 1806 (born 4 Apr 1806) Andover

John Lywood married Elizabeth Dowling 1 Jan 1823 at Goodworth Clatford
Elizabeth Lywood married John Lewis 10 Jan 1822 at Barton Stacey
Leonard Lywood married Anne Courtney 9 Nov 1830 at Barton Stacey
Mary Lywood married Anthony Mist Lewis 7 Jul 1825 at Barton Stacey

There are four possibilities for the parents of John Lywood (Testator) on Find My Past (and the first one is eliminated by the last leaving two possibilities one at Knights Enham and one at Chawton):

John Lywood baptized 16 Aug 1752 and the son of Jesse and Mary Lywood at Nether Wallop (married 22 Dec 1760 Jesse Lywood and Mary Cook (widow) at Nether Wallop)
John Lywood baptized 15 Sep 1757 and the son of John and Mary Lywood at Knights Enham (married 21 Oct 1756 John Lywood and Mary Pearce at Knights Enham)
John Lywood baptized 9 May 1760 and the son of John and Ann Lywood at Chawton (married 10 Jul 1759 John Lywood and Ann Cousins at Chawton)
John Lywood baptized 2 Mar 1777 and the son of John and Ruth Lywood at Houghton (married 13 May 1776 John Lywood and Ruth Warwick at Nether Wallop)

Knights Enham is interesting being so close to Andover. However, Froyle where they married is only 4.3 miles NE of Chawton and Andover is 25 miles East of Froyle. So no guesses here on that one!

The will might give us some information on his origins if he mentions siblings. Barton Stacey is 5.5 miles south east of Andover just to place this location. He does not however mention any family other than his children and wife in his will below.

I have no ideas on the ancestry of this Lywood family but I vaguely recall Warwick mentioning that this Hampshire Lywood family may not share ancestry until back before the 1600s. I haven't spoken to him in at least seven years (via email) so he may have more information now and can be found on the Guild of one name studies website.
