My Tanner family is virtually unknown to me and as mentioned yesterday Sarah Tanner (baptized 31 Dec 1758 at Tilshead) married Jeremiah Rawlings 1 Nov 1780 at Tilshead.
She was the daughter of John Tanner and Ann Stratton who were themselves married 27 Jan 1751 at Little Cheverell. A search through the parish registers at Little Cheverell did not add to any information on John Tanner and Ann Stratton. Ann was buried 2 Oct 1779 at tilshead. They had one other child at Tilshead John baptized 10 Mar 1756 also at Tilshead. But were they really married five years before they had children? None were baptized at Little Cheverell.
On the 1841 Census at Great Somerford (District 3, page 12) I find John Tanner 30 years of age and a cordwainer with his wife Kezia also 30, daughter Sarah 3 and son Jacob 1. John was thus born circa 1811.
Also on the 1841 census at Westbury (District 1, page 5) I find George Tanner 46 years of age with wife Fanny 48 years of age and daughter Elizabeth 12 and son Robert 9 and on page 6 John age 6 and Charlotte age 4.
In general the entries are for Great Somerford but also Chippenham, Westbury, St Thomas and Corsham. Is it possible that my Tanner family came down from north western Wiltshire to the Little Cheverell area and got married and then moved on to Tilshead just for this generation? No ideas on that but will pursue on the next Tanner Research Day.
