1. The Pincombes of South Molton
A talk by another researcher (Dr Joe Flood) generated discussion on the Pincombe family found lately in Cornwall (middle 1800s). I then mentioned in the last newsletter an interesting bit of folklore that I read in one of the history books on North Devon talking about the Pincombe family of South Molton being the founders of the Pincombe family later found at Barnstaple. I have not really looked at the records for the Pincombe family in some areas of Devon where they principally lived. The Pincombe family found early at South Molton was discussed in the last issue and by the mid 1600s at least one line of this family was living at Poughill, Devon. I then planned to look at the South Molton Parish Records (I have these on fiche) to see the Pincombe families living there up until the 1700s. Dr Flood enters into this discussion because he has in his COAD one-name study a member who does not match COAD and the reason given was a change of name in the early 1800s (a family breakup occurred where the male line was PINCOMBE and the female line was COAD and the children and mother reverted to her maiden name. However, the yDNA of this line matches the PINCOMBE line found at Bishops Nympton in this century (one of my cousins has tested for this line and he matches descendants of John Pincombe and Mary Charly/Charlie and they were, of course, my cousin’s third great grandparents and my fourth great grandparents). Listening to Joe speak, he did mention the Pincombe line, I decided it really was time to look into this particular instance more thoroughly. One other descendant of John Pincombe and Mary Charly/Charlie did test but declined to join the study and he is descendant of one of John’s and Mary’s sons named William (2nd son of John and Mary Pincombe). He too matches my cousin (descendant of Robert (3rd son of John and Mary Pincombe)) and the COAD member of the study.
Looking once again at the 1544/45 Subsidy and the 1581 Subsidy for Devon (and adding a row to show that this is a known Pincombe already placed in the last issue) :

In the last issue of the newsletter all of the South Molton members of this chart were discussed as well as William Pencombe at East Buckland, his likely father Thomas of East Buckland, Alice widow of North Molton (possibly the wife of the Unknown Pyncombe who arrived at North Molton with Lord de la Zouch in 1485 (if he was a young page)).
That leaves nine individuals with the surname Pincombe/Pencombe/Pyncombe found in the Subsidies of 1544/45 and 1581 to review from the point of view can their descent be determined from the Unknown Pyncombe first found at North Molton in 1485 (the first year of the reign of Henry VII and recorded on the 1620 Visitation of Devon).
The two earlier researchers on the Pincombe-Pinkham one-name study did create a chart for South Molton and a more complete version of this chart was published in the last issue of the Newsletter. I have cropped it to show just the family of John Pincombe and Mary Carew (although initially at South Molton by the mid 1600s the family was living at Poughill in particular at the time of the death of Richard the son of John Pincombe and Mary Carew). This Richard was a student in London in the mid 1650s. At the time of the writing of his will 19 Nov 1656 and the probate 10 Apr 1658 no children are listed although this chart does have him marrying Jane Bond 30 Jul 1652; No marriage is recorded for this Richard Pincombe who lived at Poughill with his family. His will as mentioned was dated 19 Nov 1656 with his mother Mary named as executrix along with his cousin John Doddridge. Both renounced admon and the three sisters were granted admon of his will 10 April 1658. The probate (will is repeated in this issue) gives the names of his sisters and these are the children of John Pincombe and Mary Carew.

Richard, it is noted, does not name a wife or any children and there have been a few trees which have erroneously attached themselves to this Richard. At the time of the death of Richard this family had moved to Poughill and were no longer living in South Molton.
The question at hand is who are the individuals in this chart above produced by the earlier researchers. Richard Blake and his wife Jane Bond are said to be married 30 Jul 1652 with children: Bartholomew (b 1653), Richard (b 1654), William (b 1659), Elizabeth (b 1662), Susanna (b 1668), and Mary (b 1673) all living at Chittlehampton according to the chart. Interestingly Find My Past does have an Aaron Pincombe listed in the marriages and the 1841 census as being at Chittlehampton in the first search pass which also gave me easy access to the Chittlehampton Parish Registers. The marriage of Aaron Pincombe and Mary Hodge was the 14 Apr 1841 (Aaron is the son of Aaron Pincombe and Mary is the daughter of Mathew Hodge). The census lists Aaron Pincombe and his family living at Furze Chittlehampton and Aaron is 25 years of age, an agricultural labourer and born in Devon, Mary is 30 years of age, and born in Devon and living with them perhaps Mary’s mother Ann Hodge who is 63 years of age and a Schoolmistress. Moving backwards in time in the Chittlehampton register I commenced to read it at the beginning which was 1636 (I have not looked at the Chittlehampton register for Pincombe prior to this time).

The chart produced by the researchers prior to my taking on the project does show the family of Richard Pincombe and Jane Bond but it is not likely correct that this Richard was a son of William Pincombe and Mary Carew. At this moment in time I do not know the parents of this Richard Pincombe. On the subsidies there isn’t a Pincombe family listed at Chittlehampton but there is a Richard Pincombe at Yearnescombe in 1581, Bideford in 1581 and Kings Nympton in 1545. Because there are far fewer records in 1500 than in 1600 it would be best to have a look at what is available for these three references for a Richard Pincombe at Yearnescombe, Bideford and Kings Nympton if looking at this Richard Pincombe family at Chittlehampton. I did do a quick survey of Family Search, Find My Past, and My Heritage.
But also I am aware of several Richard Pincombes in the 1500s – Thomas Pencombe of Filleigh named one of his sons Richard and he had at least one son Thomas. Thomas Pencombe of Filleigh’s son William named one of his sons Richard (my ancestor) but he was known to be at Bishops Nympton (buried there in 1648).
On the 1641 Protestation Return for Yarnscombe there is an Edmund Pincam, John Pinkam and a Richard Pincam.
On the 1641 Protestation Return for Bideford there is a Richard Pyncombe
On the 1641 Protestation Return for King’s Nympton no Pincombe names were found.
On the 1641 Protestation Return for North Molton there is a Thomas Pinckcomb senior, Bartholomew Pinckcombe, and Thomas Pinckcombe.
On the 1641 Protestation Return for Filleigh there is a William Pincombe and a Lewis Pincombe (Churchwarden). William Pincombe at Filleigh had a son Lewis but the William Pincombe on this document is likely to be his grandson William (son of his son William). Lewis would be rather elderly so not likely him but the coincidence of the forename is interesting.
Returning briefly to the South Molton branch of the Pincombe family all of this collected information was to serve two purposes in my mind and the first and foremost was to show that the children of John Pincombe (son of the Unknown Pyncombe who arrived at North Molton in 1485) did not remain in South Molton in as far as I have been able to determine. The children of Christopher Pincombe (brother to John) are still present it would appear and a return to the records of South Molton would appear to be the next step in the process.
Unfortunately the records of South Molton do not begin until 1600 with the first Pincombe record having been cited earlier as:
Christopher son of John Pinckombe was baptized 2 Apr 1603
The Wills list does indicate that Pincombe family members probated wills at South Molton in the 1600s but actual baptism/marriage/burial records do not appear to represent all of the members of the Pincombe family living in this area. The two earliest members do not appear to have remained at South Molton.
The next issue will look at the Protestation Returns for Devon as I read through all of them looking for Pincombe/Pinkham. I pulled out a number of possible derivatives and did work on them as well. I will return to looking at individuals within communities with the second issue of the new volume.
