I think in the long run it is good to have a very active mind. Mine just becomes active sometimes in the middle of the night. I used to proofread then for a couple of hours whilst the house was all quiet. Going to bed at 8:30 when my youngest had dropped off to sleep worked very well in those days. Having a child when you are 36 is different than when you are 28; those eight years make a difference! It was a calming effect to sit and proofread or copyedit (depended on the piece of work that I was doing) in the middle of the night. My mind totally engrossed in what I was reading trained my mind away from abstract thoughts.
These days I am concentrating on that early family of Pencombe/Pincombe/Pyncombe in North Molton. I wonder did I accidentally find the forename of that first person long referred to as Unknown Pyncombe in the 1620 Visitation of Devon and repeated through the years by so many descendants. Was he John Pencombe? There are several John Pencombes on the 1524 Subsidy at North Molton. I was thinking it was the grandson (son of John) since Christopher Pyncombe was also on the Subsidy but it doesn't have to be. I can not tell for sure which of the two sons of John (son of Unknown Pyncombe) was the older one. Christopher dies before John but that doesn't mean anything either really. It is an interesting thought though for sure. The records for the Pencombe family in Hertfordshire tend to be dominated by Thomas Pencombe but there could be a John. I shall pursue that thinking just a little longer but the first three generations are for the most part set now.
Noting that in the Subsidy John and Thomas are one after the other with John having Goods value at 5 and Thomas Wages at 1. That certainly is interesting and perhaps implies a father/son relationship. Thomas is the youngest of the three brothers (John, William and Thomas) and perhaps is still under 20 years at this time, perhaps under 15. By 1544 Thomas is at East Buckland and there is a widow in North Molton, Alice Pencombe, whom I believe was the wife of the so-called "Unknown" Pyncombe and I am surmising that he is John Pencombe on the 1524 Subsidy of North Molton.
Having the first Chart just be that Chart 1 with no additional information works well. The next Chart will be Chart 2 and it will be North Molton. If I am able I could have both in the next newsletter. Time will tell. I am slowly getting the fourth generation together. In the third generation they are moving out from North and South Molton and the fourth generation has always been a struggle to figure out which line went where. The addition of the 1524-7 Subsidy has been helpful in letting me put everyone in that Subsidy in a place that works and is realistic.
Another Sunday; I do love Sundays. Off to Church on YouTube later. Last Sunday's sermon was quite interesting; a continuation of the week before in some ways. Salt was and is such an important commodity and working it into Bible stories is not surprising actually. The Chinese gave us salt so many centuries ago; the Europeans traveling on the Silk Road went to China and came back with salt and other items. A progressive society was in hold in China; an adventurous forwarding looking society that invented all sorts of items that are very much part of our modern world still. They, like the United States, were and are an economic powerhouse. The world can progress forward so much better if those two societies are in sync. Economically speaking they balance each other because they are both progressive nations and can do much to create a world where peace is the cornerstone and economic prosperity can be there for all. The world isn't about how powerful militarily a country is although we are forced to be that way partly because we do not know what is out there in the universe. But economics is the important one and the United States is a huge powerhouse and capable of being fast moving and progressive in an instant. As a nation created from all the peoples of the world it just wants to have peace and long ago we hitched our wagon to that peace making ability which they have. But the reality remains that the only road to peace is being prepared always to defend oneself because there are rogue nations run by nazi psychopaths with that same sick smile that Hitler and his enablers had.
Back to sleep and Church in the morning.
