Second Generation (Children)

2. William 2 Sidervin (John 1) lived in Luxborough, Somerset, England and was buried by 16 May 1572[1] in Luxborough, Somerset, England.

William married Wilmot Foster (daughter of John Foster of Luxborough). Wilmot died in or before 1579[2].

Will of William Sidervin[3], William Sidervin, Luxborough, Som[erse]t. gent. Will dated 20th Aug. 1568. Proved 16th May 1572 (Taunton Registry).

To be buried in the chancel ..... Residue to my son Robert and Wilmot my Wife to dispose of my goods as shall seem best to the pleasure of God and the weal of my soul . . . Mr. Alexander Sydenham of Coombe Sydenham family a witness.                            Wilmot Foster.

Will of Wilmote Siderven[4], Wilmote Siderven, will proved 1579, mentions son Robert and daughter Jone Webber (Wester[o]n in parish register), also a granddaughter Jone (not located prior to 1579), but no mention of property.[5]

The son Robert and his wife Christian had eight children, William, born 1585; Robert, 1587; Thomas 1590; Janet 1596; Elizabeth, 1597; Jone, 1602.  [6][7] 

The loss of the wills when the Exeter Record Office was bombed during World War II is enormous in terms of access to these ancient wills. Having the transcripts produced by family members and interested authors prior to the Second World War has been an enormous asset.

Children from this marriage were:

+ 4 M i. Robert 3 Siderfin (William 2, John 1) lived in Luxborough, Somerset, England and died after 19 Aug 1627 [8] and was buried by 31 Jan 1627/28 in Luxborough, Somerset, England.

+ 5 F ii. Jone 3 Siderfin (William 2, John 1).

3. Christian 2 Siderfin (John 1) lived in Luxborough, Somerset, England.

Christian married George Escott on 14 Jun 1542 in Luxborough, Somerset, England[9]. It is unknown whether there was any issue in this marriage. Searching Find My Past and Ancestry did not reveal any entries for baptisms, online trees for this family did name a Hugh Escott.

This recitation of the 1^st and 2^nd Generation of the Siderfin family since 1500 was a gift of James Sanders. He was one hundred years closer to the past. Whether or not the original wills that he transcribed were also transcribed by him are a mystery to me. Living in Canada and not having visited the Devon Record Office during my eight trips to England I was unaware until lately what his set of documents retained by the Devon Record Office contained.

The repository for these records is actually at the North Devon Record Office[10] which I did not visit.  The fonds does tell me that he did not place a copy of the earlier wills in his records but only his transcriptions. I learned a lot from his book regarding original documents and the necessity to ensure that they remain available into the future.

[11] The will of Thomas Trill would be an interesting acquisition. His daughter Grace (Trill) Escott also left a will which is reprinted partially by James Sanders. It would be interesting to see what relationship there was between the Trill and the Siderfin families – this will of Thomas Trill was witnessed by John Siderfin and Robert Siderfin (John was a son of Robert according to the abstract (from the original book by James Sanders’ “History of the Siderfin Family of West Somerset, page 44”). The Escott surname may be the link back a number of generations at this time. Generation 2: Christian married George Escott on 14 Jun 1542 in Luxborough, Somerset, England.
