Third Generation (Grandchildren)
4. Robert 3 Siderfin (William 2, John 1) was born circa 1540[1] in Luxborough, Somerset, England and was buried by 31 Jan 1627/28[2] (will probated 31 Jan 1627/28) in Luxborough, Somerset, England aged circa 87 years.
Robert married Christian (unknown) likely by 1585.
His children were[3]:
+ 6 M i. William 4 Siderfin (Robert 3, William 2, John 1) was born circa 1585[4] in Luxborough, Somerset, England, and died likely before 1641 as he does not appear on the Protestation Returns and on the 1642 Subsidy his widow appears as the owner/occupier.
+ 7 M ii. Robert 4 Siderfin (Robert 3, William 2, John 1) was born circa 1587[5] in Luxborough, Somerset, England and although James Sanders lists him as buried in 1636 he and his wife Ursula appear in a 1653 Answer Document to be mentioned later.
+ 8 M iii. Thomas 4 Siderfin (Robert 3, William 2, John 1) was born circa 1589[6] in Luxborough, Somerset, England, died in 1675, aged 86, and was buried 16 Dec 1675[7] in the parish church at Luxborough, Somerset, England.
+ 9 F iv. Christian 4 Siderfin (Robert 3, William 2, John 1) was baptized 14 Oct 1591[8] in Luxborough, Somerset, England.
+ 10 M v. John 4 Siderfin (Robert 3, William 2, John 1) was baptized 11 Sep 1594[9] in Luxborough, Somerset, England. Likely deceased by 19 Aug 1627 (not mentioned in his father’s will)
+ 11 M vi. James 4 [Janet][10] Siderfin (Robert 3, William 2, John 1) was baptized 25 Feb 1596[11] in Luxborough, Somerset, England. Likely deceased by 19 Aug 1627 (not mentioned in his father’s will)
+ 12 F vii. Elizabeth 4 Siderfin (Robert 3, William 2, John 1) was baptized 13 Aug 1599[12] in Luxborough [and died in 1668 aged 71][13].
+ 13 F viii. Jane 4 [Joan] Siderfin (Robert 3, William 2, John 1) was baptized on 3 Oct 1602[14] in Luxborough, Somerset, England.
5. Jone 3 Siderfin (William 2, John 1). Jone/Joan Siderfin married William Wester[o]n on 13 Feb 1602[15] in Luxborough, Somerset, England.
+ 14 M i Robert Westeron (Jone 3, William 2, John 1) (named in his uncle’s[16] will)
There are some discrepancies with the list of the children of Robert and Christian Siderfin as compared to the Pedigree Chart which James Sanders created. Christian is missing (baptized 1591), John is missing (baptized 1594), the register at Luxborough reads James not Janet for the child baptized 1596), and Elizabeth was baptized 1599. The list of children above is corrected to show these differences.[17]
This man [William Sidervin father of the third generation] had one son Robert and a daughter called Jone, who married William Webber, ?1602.[18] In actuality Jone/Joan married William Westeron on 13 Feb 1602 in Luxborough, Somerset, England[19].
After the death of William, a number of court cases were transcribed by James Sanders referring to a piece of property that had been part of the dower of his wife Wilmot (Foster) Siderfin. This material forms Appendix 3.
I did locate a will at the National Archives of the UK for Robert Siderfyn probated 31 Jan 1627 (old style) by his wife Christian and son Thomas Siderfyn. It would appear that he did succeed in obtaining the property that would have been his mother Wilmothe’s by marriage portion from her father.

Summary of will information:
Thoughts of the author: Robert Siderfin whose will was dated 19 Aug 1627 and probated 31 Jan 1627 (Old Style) is likely the Robert Siderfin mentioned in the Chancery papers during the latter part of Queen Elizabeth's reign. I do believe it to be him as I have collected up the information that is available. James Sanders was in error in his book the Siderfin Family of West Somerset regarding the death date for Robert Siderfin. After 110 years it is appropriate to readdress this book about the Siderfin Family and ensure that any new information is worked into it. Likely a few years from now even more will be available and some of my thoughts will be questioned as they should be or perhaps I will revise it once again. I spent enough years in Science studying and working that I would not be happy to think that people would accept all that I write as perfect. We are meant to question what is written so that we understand it better and make corrections where errors have been made in the past.[21]
Summary[22]: The testator, Robert Siderfyn, is living in the parish of Luxborowe (in the diocese of Bath and Wells, Somerset) and he asked to be buried in the Chancel of the Church at Luxborowe. He mentions a couple of people in the beginning of his will a Robert Siderfin[23], son of William Siderfin, Robert Westeron, son of William Westeron and Robert Siderfin[24] son of Robert Siderfin of Minehead. He then mentions that his other sons and daughters have children. He then mentions his son William Siderfin, daughter (unmarried) Marie/Mary Siderfin[25], and his son Thomas Siderfin. Thomas and Mary are to have the remainder of his lease in South Wheddon tenement, Cutcombe. They also inherit his lease to keep 100 sheep at Brundon plus his property there. As well seven acres of wood in Luxborrowe (Priory Wood) for Thomas and Mary. He has a daughter Jane (likely married as he mentions her portion is not fully paid). Elner Westeron (the testator's sister's grandson) and Johanne Croutch (his granddaughter) are also mentioned. His wife's name is Christian. He signs his will with his own hand (full signature Robert Siderfin) providing the transcription of the court recorder has been faithful.
I then searched the Somerset Archives for early records concerning Robert Siderfin and found the following:
DD/BW/2/133: Counterpart lease common of pasture for one hundred sheep on Brendon Common in Cutcombe. 3 Apr 1611; Repository: Somerset Heritage Centre, Reference number: DD/BVW2/133, Description: 1. John Pym Esqr of Brymore to 2. Robert Siderfin yeoman of Luxborough Apr 9 Jas 1 [1611]. Seal missing. Autograph: Siderfin. Indented.[26]
A proof that Robert Siderfin was still living 9 Apr 1611 as this particular indenture appears in his will. Robert mentions his grandson Robert son of his son William and he was baptized 27 Nov 1611. He also mentions his son Robert’s son Robert and he was baptized 27 May 1616 a further proof that Robert was still living in 1616. As well Christian Siderfin (daughter of the testator Robert) was married to William Couch 3 Jun 1616 at Luxborough, Somerset and mentioning their daughter moves this proof on into 1617.
The Visitation of Somerset made in the year 1623 by Henry St. George and Sampson Lennard under Camden[27] offers further proof: In this text on page 131 under the heading: The names of those who usurped the title of Gentleman within the county of Somerset and were disclaimed at Dunster the 15th of August Anno 1623, subtitle: Ignobiles[28] - Robert Gitterfen of Loxborough
[29]
Figure 7: Visitation of the County of Somerset 1623 - Ignobiles
The visitation of the county of Somerset in the year 1623, lists under Carhampton Hundred: Luxborow Robert Sitterfyn gent. ignobilis. Pages 133-4.
[30]

I do feel that sufficient proof has been provided to prove that Robert Siderfin did not die in 1612 as per the Pedigree Chart in James Sanders book but rather lived on to 1627 when he left his will which has been a great asset in looking at this Robert Siderfin of Luxborough.
[1] The suggested birth year for Robert Siderfin developed from the records which concern him. The mother of Robert (Wilmot (Foster) Siderfin received her marriage portion about 26 Henry VIII (1534-5) which means he was born after this time. Robert is listed in the Somerset Muster Roll, 1569, as an archer so was likely in his late teens or early twenties so an approximate year of birth of 1540 is reasonable (reflection of Elizabeth Kipp)
[2] Prerogative Court of Canterbury Will PROB 11/153/93, dated 19 Aug 1627 and probated 31 Jan 1627/28
[3] At this point, I need to mention that James Sanders has made an error (corrected in the text below) in listing the children of Robert Siderfin (son of William Sidervin and Wilmot Foster). James Sanders has also given Robert Siderfin a death date of 1612 but I believe he died in 1627. Robert, in his will written and probated in 1627, mentions his sister Jone/Joan’s children and her grandchildren with the surname Westeron.
[4] James Sanders records in the original book that the first three children of Robert and Christian Siderfin were baptized but only giving a year. The Parish Registers for Luxborough are online at Family Search: commencing 1590 for baptisms, 1590 for marriages, 1590 for burials. That being said I did find a baptism on one of the early pages of the Luxborough Parish Register dated 1583 for a child’s baptism of Robert Sidderfin (it was not possible to determine anything beyond that. I did make a copy of that page.

[17] I switched the style of this book to a generational numbering system as it seemed easier to relate from one generation to the next. The text is thus moved about from its original position in James Sanders’ book to suit this particular style of writing about the Siderfin Family in West Somerset (Elizabeth (Blake) Kipp)

[20] Mary Siderfin is missing from the Generation Three chart because I do not know where to place her. Is she Elizabeth he does not mention Elizabeth but on the chart she is said to have died in 1668. I leave it up to the reader to decide if she is Mary Elizabeth
[21] My thankyou in advance to others who may follow me in this quest for knowledge of our ancestors.

[25] There isn’t a daughter Mary/Marie in the list of his children but Elizabeth has been omitted from his will and he says that he is sick and could simply have been in error or perhaps she was Mary Elizabeth although not baptized as such (thoughts of the author, Elizabeth (Blake) Kipp)
